Thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine which is filled with news, information, features and much more. There will be no mention of the weather this month, as I really can’t find any suitable words to describe it... I’m simply throwing open the curtains each day and just dealing with whatever season it is! The next couple of months are set to be really exciting as July kicks off carnival season and who doesn’t like a good carnival! There are 18 carnival events happening across the island in July and August with a mixture of children’s, main and illuminated. I think we can safely say there will be something for everyone. On page 18 you will find a handy list of locations, dates and times to cut out and keep so you don’t miss out. On a more serious note we have got together with Andy Hollebon of the Organ Donation Committee, Isle of Wight NHS Trust to bring awareness about the changes happening to organ donation next year and the importance of discussing your wishes with your family. You will find this feature on page 14. I hope you all have a great July and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

OCEAN HOTEL/KINGS BAR – SANDOWN SEAFRONT -

Last month I reported that Pier Street Toilets would not be opened this season because, upon inspection, they were considered not to be safe. Alternatives have been considered and it has been decided that as only half of the building was affected the council would convert the other half into a unisex toilet. While it is becoming common in other places to have unisex toilets I believe this is a first for the IW Council. The longer-term plan to redevelop the toilet remains on track and planning permission for the new development is underway.

Unfortunately work to redevelop the Ocean Hotel and its associated Kings Bar has been temporarily suspended as structural problems have been uncovered. The owners, Carlauren, have assured me that this is a temporary suspension and not a cancellation of the redevelopment.

SANDOWN WINS SECOND NATIONAL 2019 BEACH AWARD Sandown has received a second national Seaside Award for its superb beach. The Award comes from the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ organisation and it is awarded for the cleanliness of the beach, the quality of the water, safety and the various beach facilities. This is yet another indication that Sandown is moving forward and that it is being recognised nationally.

SANDOWN ANNUAL TOWN MEETING The Sandown Annual Town meeting took place on 29th May at which I presented my annual report. I endeavoured to inform residents what the IW Council had been doing since we came into office two years ago. Regeneration is a very high priority for us, so we have introduced policies that will tackle derelict and empty buildings. In addition, we will demand that developers explain why they have not started the building work after the 3-year period allowed to start the work. If the explanation is poor their planning permission may not be extended. We are tackling several properties in Sandown, but it is a long and legal process.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown This month will see the island showcase many of the attributes that lift our hearts and keep us fighting for all that is good about our island life. We have a wealth of opportunity here in our beautiful beaches, our variety of towns and our stunning landscapes, as well as in our arts and gastronomic fare. It’s important that we all work together to protect all that is good about our island and we have much to build on. I’m well aware of the sites in Sandown that are a disgrace to our town. Although our powers as an authority over private developments are limited, as your elected representative, I consider that I have a crucial role in advocating between all parties to remedy this ongoing situation as swiftly as possible. No one wants to see these sites continue to hinder the regeneration of Sandown and prevent us from being rightly and justly proud of our town.

We are very fortunate in Sandown to have two active sports teams in Sandown Football Club and the Shanklin and Sandown Rugby Club (the Hurricanes). I was delighted to be once again invited to present the annual awards to members of Sandown Football Club and also to be invited to the annual dinner of the Hurricanes where the players were honoured for their contribution to the game this year. Both clubs are a real asset to the area and have my full support. This month is Carnival Season around the island and, as Chair of Sandown Carnival Association, I am hoping to be able to attend most of the carnivals around the island. Please support your local Sandown Carnival Association. We are all volunteers and welcome new members to join us in a variety of roles. Please call into our shop in Sandown High Street for further details.

Recently, here in Sandown, we have been awarded with the BBC Countryfile “Best Beach in the UK” award and I was delighted to see the actual award being shown round at Hullabaloo which was a resounding success enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike. I was volunteering both with Sandown Carnival Association on the Hoopla stall and with the IW Pride team who were running a Hate Reporting Crime Centre. A huge thank you to all of those who made this event possible, especially Shademakers. 8

Report from Councillor Debbie Andre. continued It’s fair to say that I have experienced some issues in carrying out my role as your Town Councillor. Notwithstanding these difficulties, I remain strong and resolute in representing you to the best of my ability, and will continue to do so, both at Town and County level. I am now the elected leader of the Island Independent Group which is the largest opposition group in County Hall. I’m fighting for you and our island at all levels. When I can, I will be joining Councillor Heather Humby at her councillor surgery at Sandown Library every Saturday from 11am – 12pm. I’m aware that not everyone is online and I want to be available to you to hear your concerns. In any event, please feel free to contact me as above, or Cllr Humby on 402024 or heatherhumby@ sandowntowncouncil.gov.uk Have a great summer everyone!

I have been to many seminars, courses, retreats, conferences, workshops where it is plainly obvious the people running them are using them to upsell their more expensive products. These can cost thousands of pounds and whilst they give you a glimpse of what they offer, you never actually get to benefit from it unless you pay out that money. There is also a lot of claptrap being sold out there that is solely to make money, and is not focused on YOU. I offer coaching and mentoring - for YOU to make changes in YOUR life, to help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it... There is no catch.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. continued The Town Council continue to make progress with the Community Library Plans, with planning permission granted and now construction drawings being commissioned, and plans being developed for public displays of the proposals. And on a personal note we would like to thank our respective wives (Tracy Gilbey and Jane Priest) for their support over the past 30 years, celebrating Pearl Anniversaries at the same time (getting married in the same week 30 years ago) has been a time to remember – and we would also like to thank all in the Town that have sent best wishes, it is sincerely appreciated, and without them we wouldn’t be able to do the things we do for the community we serve.

PAUL WALSH

Finally, as highlighted by the events and projects above, Shanklin is very fortunate to have individuals and groups that really make a difference, locally and nationally, it is a credit to the Town and all those fortunate to live here – thanks, as ever, for your contribution. Best wishes

Do your family know whether you want to be an organ donor? Have you ever talked about organ donation with them? If the answer is no, then you’re not alone; sadly, many donation opportunities are lost every year because families don’t know if their loved one wanted to be a donor. From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. Even with a change in the law next year we need more people to talk about organ donation to increase the number of transplants that happen. It will be just as important in 2020 to join the Organ Donation Register and discuss your wishes with family and friends as it is now. You can record your decision to opt in or out on the Organ Donor Register. Those excluded will be people under 18, people who have lived in England for less than 12 months or who are not living here voluntarily, and people who lack the capacity to understand the change. Adults covered by the change will still have a choice whether they want to be an organ donor and which organs they would like to donate, and their families will still be involved before organ donation goes ahead. In the UK…… • Around 6,000 people There’s no time like the present to talk about it. Nationally across the UK are waiting for millions of people are on the NHS Organ Donor Register an organ transplant already but only one in every hundred will die in • Three people a day die in circumstances where they could donate, so every donor is need of a transplant due to precious. Here on the Island there are about 60,000 people a shortage of people being on the Organ Donation Register which means there are willing to donate organs around 80,000 people who are not on the register. Last year • Only one in three adults there were 8 organ donors on the Island resulting in 20 has told their partner / family patients receiving a transplant. You could help someone their organ donation decision. waiting for that vital call, by joining the NHS Organ Donor More info www. Register and by telling your family. Register now at organdonation.nhs.uk www.organdonation.nhs.uk. Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital work closely with Specialist Organ Donation Nurses from the national NHS Blood and Transplant organisation to ensure that organ donation proceeds smoothly in a way that meets the wishes of the donor and family. The Island’s Organ Donation Committee want to start a support group for everyone with an interest in organ donation – friends and family of donors, donor recipients and anyone else with a particular interest. This informal group would provide an opportunity to talk about experiences and to participate in awareness raising activities. If you would be interested in being part of the Island’s Organ Donation Support Group then please contact me by e-mailing andyhollebon@nhs.net or on 07544-555839.
