Daisy, Daisy…. A blanket of daisies reaching as far as the eye can see… and what a beautiful sight it is. Although the photographer of this meadow, James Whillier sees this view many times a day he never gets bored of it and certainly doesn’t take it for granted. He was kind enough to capture it and allow us to share in on this month’s front cover. Daisy Valley as James likes to call it is a very special place, and this wild flower meadow was created by Chris Spence the owner of the farm who over the last 50 years has planted thousands of trees and flowers to ensure the continued survival of our birds and bees.

Hello and welcome to the July issue. I’m extremely excited that this issue is back to being in print as the last two months have been online only due to Covid-19 regulations and although this worked well at the time I know many of you missed going out to pick up your copy from local distributors. I haven’t yet reinstated the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section as most events have been cancelled and everything is still very much ‘up in the air’ but to ensure you don’t get bored I have included a double page puzzle section which will keep your brain active!! Following the great response I had last month on how great the new ‘recipe’ section was I thought it was only right that I give you another mouth watering treat, and you will find this on page 9. I have got together with our hedgehog carers this month and on page 4 you will find a useful and informative article along with some gorgeous pictures. Inside you will find reports from local Councillors ensuring residents are kept up to date with news for the area. It is great to see local shops and businesses opening again and shopping will certainly be different to what we are used to, but I think with all that we have gone through the last three month we can adapt to anything. Keep safe everyone and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Looking out for Hedgehogs... Some people are lucky enough to have a regular nightly visit from these adorable mammals. The island as a whole has a love for all wildlife and it is good to know that there is a specialist team of hedgehog carers for the island and their work involves offering advice, support and information to the public. They also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. We have got together with Zoe from Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight and Zoe has kindly given some advice below to ensure the ongoing protection of any hoggies we come across. What to do if you have a hedgehog visiting your garden? Always have fresh water available and you can also put out dry cat or dog food. Make sure any netting is secured as they could get tangled up. If you have ponds either cover over or add in a ramp for access in case they fall in. Have a messy patch as they love rummaging in undergrowth. Enjoy them from a far. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble If a hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be walking like they are drunk or unsteady – this is a sign of dehydration. A hedgehog walking with purpose might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest, she would be carrying nesting and then would transfer the babies. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see strimming injury’s, always feel around before gardening. If there is an obvious injury place the hedgehog in a light colour towel, in a high sided box and call myself or Jacquie on 01983 613145 and we will offer the advice you need. Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight often attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and their Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where they provide updates of the hedgehogs they have looked after. www.facebook.com/saveourhedgehogs

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We’d like to thank all neighbours and residents for getting in touch regarding the arrangements that have been put in place during the pandemic lockdown; the Town Council re-opened the Public Toilets in advance of the opening of non-essential shops, putting in place additional cleaning, appropriate signage and other safety measures. Along with the rest of the nation, the community has recognised the commitment and contribution made by those in the health and care sector, alongside other key workers that have ensured services are maintained throughout the lockdown. Thanks to all of the volunteers that have supported vulnerable neighbours, and the wider community at this most challenging of times: completing shopping requests, as well as collection and delivery of medications – the community response in the Bay has been heartening, benefitting countless individuals, and is continuing for the foreseeable future. The Central helpline is 01983 823600, and is based at County Hall, and if residents wish to volunteer, please contact Community Action at the Riverside Centre on 01983 524058. Increasingly services, such as the volunteer provided 22 and 24 local bus routes, are returning to their normal programmes, and local shops have worked extensively to ensure safety measures are in place to

enable shoppers to use the range of shops the Town offers. NB The Town Council has continued to support safe shopping, and continues to fund the local school crossing patrol in Shanklin; funds the beach waste bins, grounds maintenance and grass cutting, as well as a range of community services, and a £30,000 investment in Hope Road Public Toilets. Thanks also to the local schools for their contribution to the VE Day 75 Anniversary in May was very thoughtful and appropriate, including a special commemorative film recognising the events of 75 years ago, as well as participating safely and in line with the national guidance – we hope there may be an opportunity to come together, remotely or in some other way, to acknowledge the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day in August. Shanklin has also received the news that it has achieved the Seaside Award for 2020, this prestigious national award recognises the investment the Town Council has made, in the seafront and, once the situation changes, will continue to make: the Town Council has made representation about the erosion to the Cliff Path (near the Hideaway and Osborne Steps), the subsidence at Little Hope Beach, the loss of the pier apron Flag Pole (something the Town Council secured in recent years), the steps at Rylstone and the ongoing cliff falls at Luccombe. continued over the page

Monthly News Report for Shanklin Shanklin Football Club has received news that funding is going to be provided for new goalposts for Women’s and Men’s Teams, as well as funding for pitch improvements, in addition to the development of a new youth team, promising well for the future. Our application for South East England in Bloom is going forward, but recognising the current limitations, and thanks to the Green Town Volunteers for all there are doing – the recently ‘listed’ War Memorial was a credit to Terry and his colleagues, and there are countless other examples of neighbourhoods undertaking ‘spring cleans’ at this time: thanks to all that go the extra mile. Shanklin Community Library will open as soon as it safe to do so, and our thanks to Maria and the team for making preparations for when it is safe to open – alongside the proposed new Town Office in Landguard Road. These have also been incredibly difficult times for local shops and businesses, and we know the community will support them as much as possible when re-opening, and recent times have highlighted the tremendous community spirit that exists in Shanklin and across the Island. Take care and stay safe

LIONS CLUBS OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT - WE SERVE In January 1970 the first Lions club was inaugurated in Ryde. There are now 3 more Clubs and a branch club on the Island. Although these clubs are all working to the same goal, to serve the communities of the Island and beyond, they are all autonomous of each other as they can conduct their business and efforts in different ways, yet can also work together on larger projects. This year Ryde Lions Club are celebrating their 50th anniversary. The club, which was first chartered as the Isle of Wight Lions Club on the 13th January 1970 had 17 Members but when Newport Lions Club was set up The Isle of Wight Lions Club was renamed The Lions Club of Ryde and became the Mother club to Newport. Shortly after, two more clubs started up, first at Ventnor then Sandown & Shanklin Club. Finally, another started in Cowes as a branch of Newport some 16 years ago. Many thousands of pounds have been collected on the island to help local communities but also a much smaller amount has gone to help people who have suffered catastrophic disasters all over the world such as Nepal, and the awful tsunami at Christmas 2004, and closer to home in Boscastle and the floods in Yorkshire. 100% of all monies collected from the public is sent to nominated good causes. Volunteers receive no remuneration for their work in the community but give their time willingly while making sure they have fun doing it! The island clubs are part of a much larger organisation called Lions Clubs International (LCI) and they are one of the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries. Collecting money is just one part of what they do, as members of this huge organisation they carry out many other tasks as well, such as painting a room or providing carpets for a deserving family or doing beach cleans, building garden fences for people who are unable to afford a replacement of their own and help run free prostate screening tests for men on the island. They also help charitable organisations such as Mountbatten Isle of Wight to run fundraising events, or work hard with others to help keep the Daisy bus running, so that islanders can attend hospital on the mainland for cancer treatment. They care for the environment by collecting plastic and rubbish around our island and collecting used spectacles for use in emerging countries of the world. There are always opportunities to be part of a Lions club on the Island and they are keen to hear from anyone who has a desire to know more about what they do, how they help people and the enjoyment that can be gained from helping others. You can contact them on the island by calling 0345 833 5789 and you will be contacted by the club in your area.

ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING AMAZING THINGS

Home-Made Ice Cream Summer is here at last... and nothing beats a bowl of ice cream on these sweltering days. Gone are the days of needing specialist equipment and with just two ingredients plus your chosen topping it’s so easy to make yourself. This recipe is a favourite of Sophie Toogood who enjoys making this silky smooth ice cream with daughter Layla. They have been experimenting with flavours and below is the main recipe and some of their favourite suggestions for flavours. Ingredients 1 can of condensed milk 2 cups or 450ml of double cream Method 1) Whip the double cream until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over whip. 2) Add in the can of condensed milk and continue to whip just until the condensed milk is combined with the cream. 3) Add in any flavorings you wish and stir through the mixture. (see ideas below). You can make any combination you wish! 4) Scoop ice cream into resealable tub. Cover the ice cream mixture in clingfilm to stop ice crystals forming, put on the lid and put into the freezer for 6-8 hours until set. If you wanted to make mint chocolate chip ice cream, add in 2tsp of mint extract, a few drops of green food colouring and a handful of chocolate chips. For chocolate ice cream, add in 2tbsp of cocoa powder (it will look light at first, but it soon darkens up while the ice cream is in the freezer)

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 HELLO ALL – IT’S GREAT TO BE BACK IN PRINT I do hope you are all keeping well and staying safe. Now that Lockdown measures have been loosened a little and the shops opened again, there are more people about and certainly more cars on the road. At the time of writing, separation safety measures have been placed in Newport, Cowes and Ryde. Other towns are being assessed to see what suitable measures can be made to keep people safe. Unfortunately, parking charges that were suspended to encourage drivers to take their cars off the roads, had to be reintroduced to free up car parking spaces for the return of shoppers to our High Streets. ISLAND LINE – NEW TRAINS DUE IN THE AUTUMN OF 2020 The new replacement trains for Island Line, designated as Class 484, are currently being re-manufactured by Aviva Rail. We expect to have at least two carriages on the Isle of Wight sometime between Sept/Oct this year. More trains will be delivered after that and the all new trains are expected to go into service in the Spring of 2021. PIER STREET TOILETS GIVEN PLANNING PERMISSION TO GO AHEAD It became clear back in 2012 that Pier Street Toilets needed serious remedial work as the building was deteriorating. Unfortunately, Initial planning work was abandoned until 2017, when I got the project included in Sandown’s regeneration programme. A part of the building was declared unsafe about 2 years ago, so the Men’s Toilet had to be closed and the Unisex facility was configured for last summer. After nearly 8 years of disappointment, delays and finally designed, the proposal went to the IW Council Planning Committee’s first online meeting. I am pleased to say that it was agreed by all members of the Committee except one who wanted it delayed! 10

Servicing, Replacements, Repairs and Maintenance Hot water and ensuring your house is heated over the winter months is a necessity, but it is also important to remember that some older boilers and those that aren’t serviced regularly can end up costing households much more money than necessary and will most likely not be working to their full potential. Local business, Primo Technical Services Ltd have been in the industry for over 25 years and offer a range of services including all aspects of domestic gas services, safety checks and installations, power flushing, heating and ventilation, plumbing, unvented systems and electrical. They provide regular maintenance as well as emergency breakdowns and they always turn up when they say they will! They also believe it makes sense to ensure your boiler is working efficiently and all their new boiler installations come with a ten year warranty so that alone is something worth looking into to ensure you aren’t throwing money down the drain.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown We are all affected by the pandemic, but some are affected more than others and some effects will be longer lasting. We can all play our part in rebuilding our local economy by shopping locally now that some shops have reopened. By the time you read this, we may have entered the next phase of the lifting of the lockdown with pubs and restaurants opening their doors. I’m looking forward to seeing our local high streets alive and thriving and we can all play a part in enabling that to happen, even while social distancing measures remain. However, emerging from lockdown will, I’m sure, bring opportunities that perhaps we hadn’t previously considered? I will be pushing hard both at a national and local level for a change in policy to issues such as the Green Economy, Local Enterprise and a change in the way that we view public health. Many people, including myself, are now growing their own vegetables and we are thinking about ways to stay healthy rather than waiting until we become ill. We have all had to adapt our lifestyles in one way or another. We have been dealing with many unknowns throughout this time and not knowing how long we would need to prepare for has been a major consideration. Less reliance on motorised forms of transport due to home-working has seen benefits in terms of both the environment and increased time due to less travelling. There are also physical and mental health benefits to taking regular 14

daily exercise. Now is the time to consider how we rebuild our communities and it’s essential that, as a council, we have public engagement. What issues are affecting you most? How confident are you in the messages that are coming from the IOW Council. What information is missing? What changes are needed to strengthen our communities and grow our local economies in the months to come? Please get in touch with your priorities for our community. Whatever situation you now find yourself in, I’m here to listen and support you where needed. Please get in touch using the contact details provided. The IOW Council helpline on 823600 is still actively offering help to those who need it, especially those who are still shielding and self-isolating. Sadly, I’m not able to meet with you personally at my monthly Councillor surgery, but will reinstate this as soon as it’s safe to do so. Also, Cllr Heather Humby is available on 01983 402024 or at heatherhumby@sandowntowncouncil. gov.uk and will also resume her weekly Councillor Surgery at Sandown Library when the restrictions are lifted. Thank you all for the many expressions of support that I have received. Stay safe and take care everyone.
