Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. Now that the local elections are over we need to focus our attention on the general election which takes place on the 8th June. Don’t forget to vote and have your say. I would like to welcome new contributors; Debbie Andre for Sandown and Michael Beston for Shanklin who are going to be keeping us up to date with the latest news and information for their areas. We have been very lucky for the past 4 years, thanks to Heather Humby, Richard Priest and Jon Gilby who stepped up to the mark and kept us in the know with their informative reports each month and I would like to thank them for all their hard work. Summer should be kicking in now and we have been very lucky so far as there have been some really nice days and what better way to spend them then on Sandown or Shanklin seafront. They are both a hive of activity with plenty of places to visit whether its for a coffee, lunch or an activity. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you all soon.

Shanklin Chine: celebrating 200 years in 2017
The Island’s oldest tourist attraction truly is a spectacle of nature. Carved by Mother Nature’s own hands over thousands of years, the stunning tree lined gorge that is Shanklin Chine cuts its way from Shanklin Old Village to the sandy beach and esplanade far below. In 2017, the famous local attraction marks its 200th anniversary as a tourist attraction with a special celebratory exhibition, which local Island people will find fascinating. It tells the charming story of the Chine and features sections about the wildlife, nature and art that have made the attraction so endearing for millions of visitors over the last two Centuries. And where better than Shanklin Chine to spend an afternoon enjoying a relaxing cream tea? There are few places on the Isle of Wight, let alone England that can boast such a tranquil and picturesque location for a tea stop with friends and family. The Chine’s “original” Isle of Wight cream tea has been enjoyed by visitors for nearly 200 years. You can stop, relax and take in the beauty of the nature all around you...the perfect place to escape the crowds on the beach below. Visitors are encouraged to return at night in Summer and October for the Chine Lumière, when hundreds of lights illuminate the narrow paths, streams and waterfalls held within. A special return ticket is now available allowing for two visits over seven days to make the most of the attraction both day and night.

Fisherman’s Cottage: A magnificent place to relax and eat Nestled just beneath Shanklin Chine at the far end of Shanklin Esplanade you will find Fishermans Cottage, Shanklin’s original dining pub on the beach. Frequented by discerning Island visitors and savvy locals, this is one of the best kept Shanklin secrets. Boasting the most enviable beachfront location that never fails to disappoint, Fisherman’s Cottage is famed for its home cooked lunches and dinners, specialising in locally caught seafood when it’s available, which can be found on the daily specials board. This quaint thatched pub is under new management in 2017 and always offers the warmest of welcomes from 11am in the morning until 10pm each night. It’s open daily until the end of October, with extended weekend opening until Christmas. The pub is child and dog friendly and perfect for escaping to after a long day on the beach or following a long coastal stroll around the bay from Sandown. The pub’s menus can be found on their new website www.fishermanscottageshanklin. co.uk, where booking information is also available.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. E- debbie.andre@iow.gov.uk debbieandre4sandown I’m delighted to be able to introduce myself to you as your newly elected town and county councillor for Sandown North, Debbie Andre. I would like to thank everyone who turned out and voted for me on Thursday 4th May. I am very touched by the faith that you have placed in me and I will be a strong voice for you all in the weeks, months and years to come. Although I am relatively new to the world of local politics, I have a background of over 40 years in customer service and working with members of the public and I very much enjoy the kind of interaction that effective local government requires. About 18 months ago I started going to town and county council meetings as I wanted to know why Sandown had been allowed to deteriorate over the last 10 years that I have lived here. I found that the town council, although generally well meaning, were ineffectual and indecisive and did not engage with the local community. I realised that in order to be effective there needs to be greater collaboration between town and county councils and residents.
public involvement in council matters. I will continue to speak out for Sandown where I feel it is necessary to have a strong voice and to have our voice heard. We are very fortunate in Sandown to have many wonderful voluntary organisations who contribute their time and energy for the benefit of others. I am actively involved in the Carnival Committee, the Regatta Committee and Sandown Forum. I am a musician and a regular player with the Island Savoyards. I attend Christ Church, Sandown and am on the church PCC. My daughter has been educated on the island at Christ the King College and is currently taking her A levels. She has been offered a place at Bangor University to read Geography. I am very grateful for the education that she has received here. I have made Sandown my home over the last 10 years and intend to stay here and do everything I can to make Sandown the best it can possibly be as a place to live, work and visit.
As I settle into my new role as your councillor, I realise that positive change for the future, Since becoming more involved in local issues, I whilst possible, isn’t going to happen overnight. have actively campaigned to protect Sandham I will work tirelessly for the benefit of Sandown and take action where possible to address the Gardens from inappropriate development. many issues in our town. I have challenged the council executive to refuse or alter the variation of a lease I consider the role of a councillor to be a full that was necessary for an agreement to be time one and intend to make myself readily made between Sandown Town Council and Heritage GB regarding the handing over of the available to handle any queries and resolve any management of Sandham Gardens. Summer Solstice If like me you are just getting into the swing of summer but haven’t yet had the chance to fully enjoy the longer, lighter evenings, then I suggest you get your skates on because on Wednesday June 21st its Summer Solstice. Even though this midsummer date is when we get the most daylight of the year, it also marks the time where the days start shortening ahead of winter.

The midsummer date is set based on the sun’s tilt towards the sun, which hits its maximum at 23° 26′ and falls between June 20th and June 22nd in the northern hemisphere. The ‘longest’ day of the year marks the middle of summer because the tilt of the Earth’s axis is most aligned with the sun, providing us with the most daylight of the year. After June 21st, the nights will began to close in as our planet rotates away from the sun. Apologies if I am the bearer of bad news but please don’t shoot the messenger!!!! Take my advice and start making full use of these longer evenings before the nights start drawing in again.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin from Councillor Michael Beston Email michael.beston@iow.gov.uk I’m honoured and delighted to have been recently elected as your Shanklin Town & Isle of Wight Councillor. For those of you who don’t know me, I live locally in the heart of Shanklin (on Queens Road) and have been actively involved in the Shanklin community for many years. My wife Sally & I own and manage a busy local tourism business, we have two grownup daughters who were educated locally and are now pursuing their own careers. We are both actively involved with the Shanklin Hotel & Accommodation Association (SHAA). Alongside this, I volunteer at Shanklin Theatre, where I am also vice-chairman of the Friends Committee. It has been a tremendous privilege to be part of the huge success story which is our local theatre. With this background, I had been encouraged by a number of fellow local residents to put myself forward for election to the Isle of Wight Council last May. I have no formal background in politics (which is hopefully a refreshing change!), and I am committed to working with anyone and everyone for the betterment of our town and Island. As you probably would have read in my recent communications to local residents, I’m an active supporter of the Island’s unique railway line, and I believe that keeping the Island Line in franchise and actively working with KILF is the way forward to ensure we protect & upgrade our train route from Shanklin to Ryde. In June this year, I will be in London to meet the new franchisee, First MTR to discuss their proposals for more modern rolling stock and half-hourly train services. I will report back to you on this meeting in the very near future. 14
As I have mentioned, working together with the local Hotel Association and my colleagues at Shanklin Town Council is key to success, I will push and lobby on your behalf to have our Cliff Lift repainted to make this Iconic structure more attractive and welcoming to our residents, and of course to all our Island visitors. Local News You may have read recently that Shanklin Town Brass Band were awarded 3rd place in the recent Regional Finals of the Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. As a result, the Band had been invited to compete in the National Finals which are to be held at Cheltenham in September, and in doing so, Shanklin Town Brass band will become the first ever Island band to achieve this distinction. They will be competing against bands from all over Great Britain. The visit to Cheltenham will incur both the cost of coach & ferry travel, plus the expense of a two night stay near to Cheltenham itself. This is necessary so that the band can have a pre-competition rehearsal on the Friday before competing at some point during the Saturday. In addition, the band has already been sponsored for its travel expenses; however this still leaves the band with the cost of its accommodation which amounts to around £2,000, some of which will be met by the members themselves. After receiving a message from the Shanklin Town Brass Band requesting help with their accommodation funding, it was decided after consulting with my colleague and SHAA President, Mr Chris Quirk, that the Hotel Association would donate to the tune of (no pun intended) £500 towards the travel
Monthly News Report from Councillor Michael Beston Continued expenses to enable the Brass Band to take part in this prestigious competition. Mrs Sally Beston, SHAA Chairman went on to say; ‘Every year SHAA donates small amounts to a number of local causes and a larger amount to our “Charity of the year”. We are really pleased to have Shanklin Town Brass Band as this years’ charity. They show commitment, talent and hard work, which has now paid off with obtaining 3rd place in the regional finals and we
are more than happy to help with their costs in attending the National Finals in Cheltenham. We wish them good luck for the competition and for the future.’

Prep Work by Lucie Ferguson My body and mind is in a serious state of shock.... I have woken up and realised that the half-year mark is right in front of my eyes. June... yes that’s right I said June is here.... I don’t know where the other 5 months have gone and I don’t have time to look for them right now, as it seems only a few weeks ago that I was making my New Year’s Resolutions.

Rebecca’s Mobile Hairdressing
By this time of the year I should have already dropped two dress sizes, I should be eating more healthily and getting myself beach body Dry Cut £15.00 ready... and I don’t mean being mistaken for a beached whale lying harpooned on the Children’s cuts £10.00 sandy shores!!!!
Cut and Blow-dry £25.00
My feet have been encased for far too long in ankle boots and are so white that they look like I’ve been dipped in a tin of Dulux paint. There is no way they are ready for bejewelled summer sandals just yet. Another important job I need to get working on is my tan as no way can these white bits be put so glaringly on display. I’m a fake tanner as it’s quick, easy and it’s much healthier than sun beds or sunbathing.

facebook.com/rebeccaabsolomhair I hope as you read this, there will be many of you who are nodding your head in agreement 10% discount for new customers. and feeling my pain. It’s not that I want to inflict this on others but more that I need to know I am not alone out there in this cruel world, that I won’t be the only one on our sandy beaches that didn’t stick to the New Year’s resolutions I so proudly declared a mere few months ago. I have thought about setting myself some mid-year resolutions and perhaps between now and the end of summer I may have toned my rather round shape slightly. But then I think of all the ice creams that need to be enjoyed, the ‘all you can eat’ barbecues I will be attending and all the summer cocktails I plan on sipping and the answer I keep coming up with is.... maybe next year!!!! 18
What is MND?....
JT’s REFURBISHMENTS
June is The Motor Neurone Disease Electrical • Plumbing Association’s Awareness month and still there is a lot to learn about this debilitating disease. Carpentry • Tiling Many people aren’t aware of the disease Painting & Decorating and mention the words MND and a common response is “What’s that?” 24hr Emergency Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a Call Out progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal Call Jason on 07512 315 772 cord. As the motor neurones gradually die, the jltnos@talktalk.net muscles stop working. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. It can affect how a person diagnosed with MND walks, talks, eats, drinks and breathes. It is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease that can affect any adult at any time. Although there is currently no cure, symptoms can be managed to help achieve the best possible quality of life. The Isle of Wight has an established branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association and their sole aim is to serve and support all those on the Island who are affected by it. This includes people with MND, their carers, family and friends, in fact anyone who has been touched in some way by the disease. Jennie Lewis, Chair of the IOW branch, commented ‘We regularly have between 12-20 people living with MND on the Isle of Wight. Each person has a different set of requirements. The disease can take hold very quickly so we need to react immediately to the changing needs of our local people. Our brilliant team in the Island branch are able to work closely with other professionals on the Island (including very close links with the Earl Mountbatten Hospice) to provide the best possible care and support to help people with MND and their families. The Isle of Wight branch is run entirely by volunteers, many of who have personal experience of the disease and they hold monthly support meetings for people living with MND and their carers. These meetings provide an opportunity to meet with other people living with the disease, and to share experiences and ideas. The branch wants everyone to know about MND and what it means for people and their families so that others will join in the fight for the best standards of care and for more research. If you would like further information about their meetings, or wish to get involved, please email the Chair of the IOW Branch, Jennie Lewis at eandjlewis@aol.com or visit the branch website www.mndiow.org.uk
