Sharing a home offers a common sense answer to twin challenges facing all communities – finding or keeping a home. BIG Lottery funding has created the opportunity for Islanders to benefit from this simple approach, which has been up and running in other areas for many years. Here, Age UK Isle of Wight is the torchbearer. The charity’s HomeShare project provides a matchmaking service which brings together householders who have spare space and home seekers who are looking for fresh and flexible alternatives to costly rental or purchase. A simple exchange sits at the heart of HomeShare – housing for help. Householders with a spare room and shared facilities open these up for sharers who, in return, provide an agreed amount of assistance every week with routine household tasks (not personal care) and also contribute to living costs. Every home share is different – shaped to the specific needs and expectations of householder and sharer. HomeShare Co-ordinators help them both to negotiate the details of how they will live together, help one another and get along with one another. The Co-ordinators are also responsible for recruiting, thoroughly screening and carefully matching both householders and sharers, for everyone’s peace of mind.

Established schemes, elsewhere in the UK, Europe, and North America where Vermont’s homeshare has been running for 30 years – have proved that home sharing is a good fit for many circumstances. Householders, for instance, may be finding their homes are becoming oversized for their needs – families fly the nest, relationships may have broken down, or support from relatives isn’t an option. Chores may be difficult or simply leaving too little time for enjoyable activities. While downsizing could relieve the pressure, it may also mean departing loved homes and known communities. For home seekers, sharing can provide flexible, short or long-term time-out from rental or purchase. It creates an opportunity to consider options, save for more permanent solutions, wait for social housing to become available (sharing won’t affect ranking on the homefinder register), or even serve out a probationary period for employment before putting down roots. Beyond the obvious practical benefits, home sharing yields many unexpected gains - peace of mind, new friendships, enjoyable company, reduced concerns and the increased happiness that comes from sharing and helping one another out.

To see how it’s already working visit www.homeshareiow.org or catch up with the HomeShare Co-ordinators at various drop-in events over the summer (details on website), or call Age UK IW on 525282.

Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. Since the last issue we have had some wonderful weather and like many I have been enjoying the great outdoors. The Island looks beautiful bathed in sun and let’s hope these warm days continue. Picnic and barbecue season is officially here and I’ve been contacted about the amount of litter that has been left after such events. Please either take your rubbish home or find a bin of which there are many about. Nothing looks worse than a beauty spot or beach littered with left over food packets, drink cans, bottles and general waste.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown This month has been another busy one as your Town and County Councillor and the Fire Brigade has featured highly throughout the month. I met with Station Watch Officers Darren Wood from Shanklin and Keith Cook from Sandown to discuss the Fire Service Review paper that was coming before the Scrutiny Committee on which I had been selected as a member. It was clear that there were differing views between the managers and the Fire Brigade Union and I was able to express these concerns, on your behalf, at the scrutiny committee meeting. I’m pleased to say that 7 of the 9 Cabinet members agreed that the paper should be rejected and some good recommendations were taken up as a result.

in a flare, is then used to produce renewable energy – providing power and heat to the works, with any surplus exported to the National Grid. It’s all happening, right here in Sandown!

I also had the privilege to stand alongside the fire officers from Ryde Fire Station on Firefighters Memorial Day. A minutes silence was observed to remember fallen colleagues and it was a great opportunity to meet with frontline officers and find out at first hand about all of the many services that they offer, including cycling proficiency training courses for schools. Details of all of the services offered can be found on the council website iwight.com, where you can book a free home fire safety check.

I think it’s fair to say that recent Sandown Council meetings have not been conducted in the best manner. At the time of this issue going to print we will have elected a new Mayor and whoever that may be, I look forward to a positive working relationship within the council. I realise that a lot of work needs to be done to restore public confidence and that we need to all move forward with vision, purpose and determination to make Sandown the fantastic place to live and work that it should be. I’m extremely grateful for your continued support.

I had a briefing from Southern Water in which I found out about their Target 100 programme to reduce domestic water consumption to under 100 litres per person per day by 2040. At Sandown £700,000 has been invested in installing a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at the wastewater treatment works to capture biogas created during the treatment process. This gas, which would otherwise have been burnt off 4

Water Efficiency home visits are now being offered by Southern Water in selected water catchment areas. Lasting for up to 2 hours, these visits are completely FREE and involve an assessment of water usage in your home and the installation of products worth over £100 by a qualified engineer where needed to save water, energy and money. Go to www.southernwater.co.uk/home-visit to find out more.

I do appreciate that not everyone has access to the internet. If you have any concerns or wish to discuss any matter with me in person, please call me and I will arrange to meet you or have a chat over the phone. I look forward to hearing from you, however you wish to contact me.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Hopefully, residents will see scaffolding alongside the Town Clock in Landguard Road/ High Street and work on the clock, and the church, well underway – plans are in hand for a celebration in the Summer and details will be in future magazines. SHANKLIN COMMUNITY LIBRARY - Initial meetings have been held regarding the proposed relocation of the Town’s Community Library, with a grant application being submitted to the Coastal Community Fund – the Town Council has allocated funding to relocate the Library (alongside Falcon Cross Hall and the renovated Public Toilets), provide a community hub and office, as well as extend the services provided. Volunteers at the library have been involved in the development of the project, and the next stage is to involve an engineer to draw up designs for the new amenity, as well as link to office, extra meeting room and hub. OTHER PROJECTS - Congratulations to Nicola, Clive and all involved in King Harry’s Bar for their success retaining the IW CAMRA Pub of the Year. CAMRA have also worked to develop a historic pub walk, and are in discussions to extend the route of the 2018 Beer and Buses weekend – it is hoped that pubs along the Esplanade will be able to be a part of the route. The Town has also hosted a regional South East England in Bloom seminar, linked to being shortlisted for a regional award, and helping promote the ‘Garden Isle’ heritage of the Island – the Town has also been shortlisted for other awards. War Memorial Curator Terry Carpenter has

also been shortlisted for a conservation award, with the Town Council, and it is hoped that 2 new commemorative benches will be in place by the Autumn – with thanks to the Royal British Legion and Shanklin Fire Station Officers. Congratulations to all involved with Shanklin football club in their 130th year – several teams have reached finals and plans are in hand for special tournaments in the Summer, promoting participation and how to get involved in sport in Shanklin. Award winning Shanklin Town Brass Band have performances on Sunday 10th and 24th June from 3pm at Rylstone Gardens; and the Best of the West End is at Shanklin Theatre on Thursdays throughout June and the Summer. Congratulations and welcome to Sarah, a new Shanklin Town Councillor and, the result of the election for Shanklin Central ward should also be known soon: with increased pressures on the Town’s Budget and extra demands on the precept, the role of the Town Council will remain important for the years ahead. Good luck to all involved with Shanklin’s Rowing Regatta planned for Sunday 3rd June, from 11am – it promises to be another successful day for the Club and all it’s members; and there is also a full fixture list at Shanklin Cricket Club, at Westhill, across Junior and Senior teams at the Club – new and old members are welcome. AND FINALLY - We’d like to thank all involved with Shanklin Carnival for the work already in hand for this year’s events and processions, and the newly crown queen and princesses are already getting ready for a full programme of carnivals.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin Thanks also to all residents that have written to Jon on his 4 years as Mayor of Shanklin – currently Shanklin’s longest serving Mayor (Jon will remain as involved as ever, but at the time of publication Shanklin will have a new Mayor and we wish them well in this role).
