Hello and welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. We are still in lockdown, but restrictions are lifting gradually, and we are free to spend more time outdoors exercising while enjoying the beach, countryside and parks etc. but we must stick to the 2 metre social distancing rule. Times are hard for many at the moment, especially charities, and on page 13 you will find how you can help the Isle of Wight Cats Protection and their fluffy little guests. There are so many ways in which you can help. To keep your mind active take time out and enjoy our puzzle section on pages 10, 11 and 12 and find the answers to last month’s puzzles. Since being on lockdown I have been baking more than normal and one of my favourite guilty pleasures is ginger biscuits. Forget shop brought as these are so easy to make and they taste amazing - see the recipe on page 14 and please feel free to email me how you got on and some pictures. This month’s front cover picture really caught my attention and you can find more details on page 7. Inside you will find the usual news reports from local Councillors, features and articles and of course some great advertisers who are offering a wide range of services. I hope you all have a great month and although this issue is online only, the July issue will be back in print and available to collect from distributors across the island. Take care and stay safe.

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 GREETINGS - I hope you are all keeping well and staying safe. I hope this report from Paul, and I will go some way in keeping you in touch with what going on locally. Since last month’s report a huge number of things seemed to have happened and life seems as busy as ever despite being in Lockdown. The IW Council has converted totally to online meetings for day to day business and we will shortly restart formal meetings online as well. LOCKDOWN ISSUES - The lockdown has raised various questions from residents which I have been able to answer. I have helped 3 businesses who wanted to claim support from one of the various schemes offered by the Government. Another question was how do people who have been designated as ‘Shielded’, claim their entitlement to a food package if they do not have a computer, well they can ring 0800 0288327. Paul Brading was able to help me answer a question about how parents can claim free school meals as their financial position declined because of their limited income. The answer is for the parent to contact their child’s school who have the responsibility to process their claim. SANDOWN FREE FOOD BANK SUPPORTING THE VULNERABLE - The Sandown Free Food Bank situated at Sandown Station is run by Dot Perrett (pictured) and her Partner, Frank. With the help of several

volunteers, Dot and Frank use their own car to visit supermarkets and other stores to ask them for any surplus food, luckily the supermarkets and stores are very generous and keep them well supplied with basic items. In addition to having food laid out on display for those in need to help themselves Dot, Frank and other volunteers also deliver food to those who are housebound. If you can help by donating food, money or time please contact Dot by email: megcampo@ yahoo.com Dorothy also fund raises to be able to buy items that are harder to come-by. I recently put forward two bids, one to the IW Council for £2000 from a government grant, and another bid to Wight Aid for £500; both of which I’m pleased to say were successful and will help to support the foodbank at this crucial time to support our vulnerable residents. SANDOWN REGENERATION PROJECTS – THE FUTURE IS A BIT UNCERTAIN - Many of our senior IW Council officers have moved into other roles to help the Island cope with the Coronavirus epidemic and other associated matters. Unfortunately, their change of focus means that regeneration work is on a back burner until things get back to some degree of normality. Fortunately, the planning applications for the Town Hall continued over the page

However, the council has used so much money supporting people they may not be able to proceed with projects until its finances recover. Worryingly, perhaps similar cash flow issues may apply to private investors who may have to delay investments

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown Last month as I sat at my desk at home, I was writing about the speed and impact of the implementation measures that we found ourselves being instructed to adhere to. Whilst we are still very much in the progressive stages of this pandemic, our thoughts are now turning to the recovery and what form that might take. A recent survey revealed that 87% of the UK population think that we will emerge from this crisis being kinder to one another. There have certainly been numerous kind acts happening within our towns and villages across the island. In fact, without our communities stepping up and organising small armies of volunteers, many of our more vulnerable residents would have been left without a vital lifeline to give them the support that they needed to keep them safe. But what happens next when our trusted volunteers are no longer available because they will, inevitably, return to their day jobs as businesses start to reopen in the weeks to come? However, it’s not just our known volunteers who have been supporting those who need to self-isolate to keep themselves safe, there are many friends, family members and neighbours who have been looking out for our communities. These are the ones who will “bridge the gap” until we are all safe to leave our homes and live a normal life, whatever that “new normal” might be. There are also many charities and organisations who were reaching out to the vulnerable long before this pandemic hit, who have been 8

working tirelessly throughout and will continue to serve our communities long after the pandemic has run its course. I’m very grateful to everyone who has continued to contact me with various concerns over the past few weeks. With a rapidly changing situation, it’s been quite challenging to be able to advise accurately, but I continue to keep up to date by a variety of means and try to respond promptly. I want to do everything I can to support our wonderful Sandown Community. As we are now getting used to the “new normal”, there has been a focus on mental health issues, and quite rightly so. I would urge anyone who is struggling, to seek help as soon as possible. Specially trained mental health advisers are now available through the central hub number 823600, along with the existing support services. There has been a lot of publicity surrounding the launch of the covid-19 App on the island and I fully support this trial. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, please go to www.covid19.nhs.uk on your smartphone. We can all help to protect each other by downloading the App and taking our phones with us when we leave our homes, but staying within the recommended guidelines of social distancing at all times. There is much talk about certain year groups returning to schools at the beginning of June. By the time that you read this, some classes may have started continued over the page

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. back. I have been extremely impressed by both the speed at which our local schools have adapted to the crisis and also by the superb structured timetables that have been provided to parents to enable home schooling to be so successful in keeping the progress of learning moving forward. Our teachers have worked incredibly hard both in school, with those pupils who needed to attend physically, and in providing such a comprehensive programme digitally to those studying at home. I look forward to the time when our local businesses will be reopening and hope that as many as possible are able to access the Government funding that has been made available. Please call the council helpline number, 01983 823600, if you need support with shopping, collecting a prescription, or if you are struggling to cope. Alternatively, please call me or email me using the above contact details if you need help or support in any way. Sadly, I’m not able to meet with you personally at my monthly Councillor surgery, but will reinstate this as soon as it’s safe to do so. Also, Cllr Heather Humby is available on 01983 402024 or at heatherhumby@ sandowntowncouncil.gov.uk and will also resume her weekly Councillor Surgery at Sandown Library when the restrictions are lifted. Thank you all for the many expressions of support that I have received. Stay safe and take care everyone.

Please Help... Kitten Food and Litter Appeal Five weeks ago in the middle of lockdown staff at the Isle of Wight Cat’s Protection arrived at the centre to find seven kittens without a mother in a cardboard box in the carpark. They were all very underweight and were only around four weeks old. The smallest weighed only 306g. The centre staff took them home and have been hand rearing them. It was an up and down journey as the littlest suffered from dehydration and she very nearly didn’t make it. She needed hourly feeds but she pulled through. Today, they are now all fluffy, bouncy and lively eight week old kittens!! Tearing about the house playing. They are all eating kitten food and are all using their litter trays which is amazing. Of course, this means that the centre are getting through a lot of kitten food and litter. Combined with all the other kittens in foster they are currently dishing out a staggering 68 meals a day to ensure these little fluffballs have full bellies and never feel hungry Please, please help them by donating kitten food and litter or money donations. They have a drop off point outside their main gate which is monitored and for those that can’t get out to the centre they also have an updated amazon wish list if you would like to donate that way: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/4Q6UKAO2H7GN or donate via justgiving.com/campaign/IsleofWightAdoptionCentre These and other kittens and cats will be up for adoption shortly so don’t forget to check out their website www.isleofwight.cats.org.uk during June. They will be operating a hands free homing process within strict Covid-19 guidelines.

Rustic Ginger Biscuits I call these rustic as there is no piping or cutters used and will therefore all be slightly different and you can make them as big or as small as you like. You can easily increase or decrease the quantity of ground ginger used depending on personal taste. The recipe uses 2 teaspoons, but I normally use 3 and a bit as I do like a strong ginger flavour. Ingredients 113g soft brown/golden sugar 100g butter or margarine 2 tablespoons of golden syrup 2 teaspoons of ground ginger 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 227g self raising flour Heat oven to 190°C. In a saucepan gently stir and warm the butter, syrup and sugar until butter is melted and well mixed. Remove from the heat. Sieve together flour, bicarbonate of soda and ginger and stir into the melted butter, syrup and sugar mix. Form into a soft dough. Place small balls (about 1 teaspoon of mix) onto a greased baking tray. About 12 per tray and flatten slightly. They flatten and spread during baking. Bake for 12 minutes or until the colour is right for ginger biscuits and the top looks slightly rough. Remove from oven and cool slightly on the tray then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy with a nice cup of tea‌.

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) As from 25th May, Islanders will be able to take more items to the HWRC’s for recycling, but trips must still be essential (if your waste or recycling cannot be stored at home safely or disposed of safely by other means, such as your kerbside or bulky waste collection or garden waste subscription). Vans, trailers and pickup trucks can access the sites, with the appropriate permits. The one-way system on Briddlesford Road has now been lifted — but the temporary 30mph speed limit will remain in force. In order to maintain social distancing measures, protecting residents and staff, entry to the recycling centres is by pre-booked appointment only. Visit www.iwight.com/ hwrcbooking to book a slot. The recycling sites will accept all the usual items except general ‘black bag’ waste (i.e. nappies, sanitary waste and cigarette butts etc), which people should continue to put out as part of their kerbside collection. 15

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We’d like to thank all neighbours and residents for getting in touch regarding the arrangements that have been put in place during the pandemic lockdown, and subsequent easing of guidance – details are on the Town Council’s website, as well as the other support available to residents and businesses.

Anniversary in May was very thoughtful and appropriate, recognising the events of 75 years ago, as well as participating safely and in line with the national guidance – we hope there may be an opportunity to come together, remotely or in some other way, to acknowledge the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day in August.

Thanks to all of the volunteers that have supported vulnerable neighbours, and the wider community at this most challenging of times: completing shopping requests, as well as collection and delivery of medications – the community response in the Bay has been heartening and has benefitted countless individuals.

The Town Council continues to fund the community services and activities that can be maintained safely, and within the guidance, and will continue to review other services, ensuring safety and public health guidance is followed.

The Central helpline is 01983 823600, and is based at County Hall, and if residents wish to volunteer, please contact Community Action at the Riverside Centre on 01983 524058. NB: As, hopefully, the lockdown guidance becomes more relaxed, as the actions being taken are increasingly effective, more community activity can take place safely – we know that the Carnival Association have already taken the difficult decision not to proceed with this year’s event, and are very mindful of the impact on the Theatre and Town Band, and know the community will do all that it can to help these, and other groups, resume activities when it is safe to do so. Thanks also to the local schools, who are operating under very difficult conditions, and their contribution to the VE Day 75

Shanklin has also received the news that it has achieved the Seaside Award for 2020, this prestigious national award recognises the investment the Town Council has made, in the seafront and, once the situation changes, will continue to make: the Town Council has made representation about the erosion to the Cliff Path (near the Hideaway and Osborne Steps), the subsidence at Little Hope Beach, the loss of the pier apron Flag Pole (something the Town Council secured in recent years) and the ongoing cliff falls at Luccombe. Our application for South East England in Bloom is going forward, but recognising the current limitations, and thanks to the Green Town Volunteers for all there are doing – the War Memorial was a credit to Terry and his colleagues, and there are countless other examples of neighbourhoods undertaking ‘spring cleans’ at this time: thanks to all that go the extra mile. continued over the page

Life Before Lockdown!! I am at the stage where I refer to my life ‘before lockdown’ and life ‘during lockdown’… and I am shocked by the changes I have automatically made Let’s go back to ‘life before lockdown’ for a minute - I went about life at quite a fast pace, everything I tackled was at 100mph. My life back then was very structured, planned and did not really have much room for change. I thrived on being busy, running around, completing multiple tasks kept me going, made me feel alive. I didn’t have time to sit down quietly for a cup of coffee, I even found it hard to sit and watch thirty minutes of TV. Basically, I couldn’t sit still, and I couldn’t entertain myself and I found my own company rather boring!!! Added to this I was a terrible worrier, I worried about everything, I worried about things that didn’t need worrying about. Now let’s go back to the 23rd March and Boris’ announcement which immediately sent me (and nearly everyone else) into a state of panic. The first thought I had was what am I going to do for 12 weeks, then I thought about not having an income and then my biggest fear was worrying I was going to catch the virus. I lived in a panic fuelled shell for a little while and I was no longer in control of my own life, or rather that is what I thought!! The first couple of weeks of staying home and worrying about everything were hard and I knew I couldn’t go on like this so something had to change. I remembered something that my friend kept telling me which I had never fully been able to take onboard before. She said “worrying doesn’t actually solve anything, it won’t change the outcome and some things in life just can’t be controlled or changed so why waste your time” (thank you Maggie for these wise words). I thought about this and yes Maggie was right, I needed to ease up and at least try and enjoy the journey as I couldn’t change anything the Government had decided and worrying about the virus wasn’t going to stop it in its tracks. Fast forward 8 weeks and I am still at home. I now potter, I have started growing my own vegetables, planting flowers, baking, and I even sit in the garden and just watch the world go by. I plan meals, and I make time for a coffee and don’t mind sitting quietly, I’ve even found that my own company isn’t as bad as I thought, in fact when I talk to myself I sometimes say some funny things!!! My life has slowed down, and I am a lot less stressed. The only structure to my day is I always get dressed and put on all my make-up. I can while away many hours without actually doing anything… It’s a surreal life we are living in at the moment but myself like thousands of others are getting through it hour by hour, day by day. I’m looking forward to life after ‘lockdown’ and I plan to take my new skills with me and choose to live life at a slower pace and I might even stop and smell the roses. There are different paths to take in life and I was on the rough, pot holed road but now I’m ready to travel down the newly resurfaced road where I can admire the scenery at the same time. At least I feel I can take something positive from this pandemic.
