elcome to the June issue and near enough the halfway point of the year... and what a year it’s been!
Do you feel life is slowly returning to normal with the easing of lockdown? Or are you finding it hard to remember exactly what ‘normal’ life was? There is no doubt that many things have changed in our lives over the last 15 months, some good and some bad. Many people have embraced the time by learning new skills and have seen life through different lenses but how many of these changes are we going to continue with when we completely move out of lockdown. Many of us our re-evaluating what is really important and what isn’t. Local elections are finally over and congratulations to all those that were elected and re-elected. We have some great local businesses advertising with us who will appreciate you using their services and please let them know you saw their advert here. The weather hasn’t been brilliant so far but let’s hope that is destined to change. Whether you are sitting indoors while it rains or sitting on the beach soaking up the sun you can enjoy our puzzle section on pages 12 and 13. I hope you have a great June and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Dear Resident Hopefully, things are returning to the new normal, with shops and businesses opening up following the new guidance, providing safe environments for residents and visitors, with attractions in Shanklin and the Bay getting ready for the Summer. Congratulations, and thanks, to all that helped us with Seaside Award application, and to achieve national recognition again reflects the efforts of all involved – and Sandown has also achieved the Blue Flag, which is really good news for the Bay and for everyone that contributed to achieving the standard. Good Luck to Shanklin Football Club in the Hampshire FA Trophy Final at 4pm on Saturday 5th June, at East Cowes Vics – this is the first time that 2 Island teams (Shanklin and Brading) have been in the final the same year, and it is the first time that Shanklin have been in the final (thanks to a Peter Wilson last minute penalty in the semi-final). Shanklin Bowling Club continue to have regular Saturday and midweek fixtures, including entertaining mainland visitors Potters Bar on Thursday 24th from 2pm; and the renovated Shanklin & Godshill Cricket Club also have a full programme of weekend and weekday matches for senior and junior sides, as well as the Evergreens on Thursdays at Westhill. Good Luck to all involved in the judging of the Community Green Flag Award, a prestigious award for environmental
projects and initiatives, with judges visiting during the spring and results expected later this month – Shanklin VYCC, with Green Town Volunteers and Plastic Free Shanklin, have again contributed to the application. The Youth Centre is also supporting September’s 10k Revetment and Esplanade Run, including a special Trophy in memory of Ray Scovell, who coached Olympians Jess Martin and Richard Jefferies in a distinguished career, which also saw Ray initiate Parkruns across the Island. SVYCC is also involved in a special Made by Sport – IW Olympians project, which is due to be launched in July before the Japan Olympics; and a film about HMS Seal, which will be on YouTube in the summer. The Number 22 (Newchurch – Shanklin) and Number 24 (Shanklin, Lake, Sandown & Yaverland) buses are gradually increasing the number of days serving local communities and have been recognised for a national award in June – following considerable support from residents that use the service; and plans are in hand to thank the volunteers that supported vulnerable and isolated residents during the pandemic. Our thoughts are with the families of John Rushby, Chairman of the Shanklin branch of the Royal British Legion and stalwart of Remembrance Day services; and Val Bain, Youth Centre and Library volunteer, continued over the page

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown I feel honoured to have been re-elected as your Sandown North County Councillor for another four years. Thank you to everyone who voted for me, I’m grateful for your trust and support. I’m here to represent all residents in my ward and to continue working for you all. As we emerge from the pandemic, it bodes well for Sandown and the island that there is likely to be an influx of visitors this summer. At the top of the list of concerns are the toilets around the town and beach. As previously reported, we have had a series of vandalism attacks on the toilets which have caused unnecessary closures and cost to Sandown taxpayers. We are pressing ahead with the total refurbishment at St John’s Road, followed by Eastern Gardens and then finally Yaverland. The style of the new toilets will deter vandals as they will be direct entry and individual units. More updates to follow.
I have met with a representative of the Environment Agency and they are aware of the issues. There is also much work going on currently with the Coastal Management Team to look at the effectiveness of the groynes on the beach in terms of sand levels and coastal erosion. The beach is our main asset and it’s good to know that this work will help to protect it. I know that speeding is a particular concern in Yaverland, especially along the 30 mile an hour stretch of Yaverland Road. I have asked Island Roads to conduct a speed review and will be pushing for a 20 mile an hour speed limit along this section, pending on the results.
I will be following up on the plan for traffic easing measures in Meadow Way and will update residents with timescales as soon as I can. Please continue to let me know of the ongoing issues and especially any problems with access for the number 24 bus I know that there are concerns over recent incidents of drunken behaviour at the beach. or emergency services in Culver Way as this will add to the evidence base. I have already spoken to the Community Safety Partnership and the Housing Delivery Please take care when walking on Yaverland Manager about the issues. It would appear beach. As you will know, there have been that certain individuals are being placed in some serious landfalls recently and I would Sandown until the correct provision can be put in place with the right level of support so advise residents not to walk too close to the cliffs, especially after heavy rainfall. this is a transitional phase. Please continue to let me know of any issues as I intend to Please contact me as above if you have monitor this. I have been in touch with our any issues that you would like to discuss. I local police sergeant and am due to meet will be resuming my councillor surgery at with him very soon. Yaverland Sailing Club on the first Saturday of every month from 11 AM to midday, I’m delighted to welcome Kate and Geoff starting on 5th June so do please come along who have taken on the awesome task of and say hello. Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 Facebook: Cllr Ian Ward BEM – Sandown South IW COUNCIL & SANDOWN TOWN COUNCIL ELECTIONS THANK YOU ALL! I would like to give my sincere thanks to all those Sandown residents who took the trouble to vote on the 6th May, especially those who have kindly continued to support me. I regard it to be a huge honour to represent Sandown South. I wrote in my campaign literature that I am focused upon the regeneration of Sandown, so I am pleased that I can continue to do that work. Thank you again! THE OCEAN HOTEL HAS BEEN SOLD First the good news. In my last report I said that the sale of the Ocean Hotel was imminent; and so it proved, the Ocean Hotel now has new owners. The not so good news is that on the 8th May it caught fire! At the time of writing no direct cause has been identified although people had been seen inside the building. I have been in contact with the new owners who are working on plans for the future and said they would let me know in about a months’ time. They are also looking at tidying and screening the site which will be a step forward. THE WHITE CORNER BUILDING DID NOT SELL AT AUCTION This building on the corner of Station Ave and Fitzroy St is the subject of a compulsory purchase order that was agreed by the IW Council Cabinet. That CPO process is now underway and in addition a Sec 215 enforcement order to make the building safe has been issued to the owner. The owner is trying to sell the building and it went to auction on the 5th May. Unfortunately, it did not sell but the owner is to resubmit it to auction in June. WHY DO RESIDENTS DUMP DOMESTIC WASTE AROUND LITTER BINS? Two or three times per week I find Station Avenue car park has household rubbish scattered around. It comes from residents who for some unaccountable reason think that it quite acceptable to dump their household rubbish alongside litter bins. The animals then rip open their bags and the waste just gets scattered about. Why don’t they use the normal waste collection service like most residents?? In previous reports I have told residents how they can get the proper waste bins if they don’t have them – They are free! I will order new bins for residents if need be, just contact me and tell me what you need. 10
The Friends of St Mary’s Need Your Help By Lesley Myland Here we are approaching a second summer of challenging circumstances but the Friends of St Mary’s continue to provide a retail service which the staff at the Trust clearly appreciate. They give us a great deal of support and encouragement which helps to keep us going. In spite of being in a rather reduced situation, we are carrying on and planning for opening up a little more widely as soon as we can. We have hopes of re-opening in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre and although it will not be for a while yet, we hope to resume our trolley service to the wards. We know how much this is missed and are working on an ordering service which we hope will bridge the gap in the meantime. The Charity will soon be preparing to ask hospital staff to consider how we can help them again in 2021 from the ‘Friends Fund`. We are pleased to say that we have many donations from patients who have been cared for at St Mary’s during the pandemic crisis and we have been greatly moved by that, but we do need to get fundraising again, particularly as we do not have the range of retail services that we did have supporting our funds. Recently we were overwhelmed by a gesture from a member of St Mary’s pathology staff, Jussna Mateen. She arranged for her colleagues to be able to take home curry dishes made by her family’s restaurant, Spice Central in Cowes. Proceeds from the event which amounted to well over £1,000 were donated to the Friends. The occasion marked the end of Ramadan which is regarded as a charitable month and we were honoured to be included in this way. A huge thank you to Jussna and her family who worked hard to make everything go so well and I can personally say that the food was fantastic!
If there is anyone out there who might be able to think of ways to help us like this, please let us know. Our Business Manager, Debs Downer will be pleased to hear from you. You can contact us via email info@ fosmiow.co.uk, or telephone 01983 534405 or our website www.fosmiow.co.uk.

IW Trading Standards have a few scams for you to be wary of. • Reports of scam texts and emails purporting to be various mail providers, claiming that you need to pay extra for a package or asking you click on a link which could install malware onto your device – the companies all involved state that they would never contact you in this way (how would they know your phone number?) and wouldput a card through the door. • Reports that the National Insurance scam has been using an 01983 number – please don’t believe that just because it appears to be a local number that it is genuine, numbers can be purchased and are frequently cloned. • A message purporting to be from Google to say that your phone has viruses and you have to click the link to repair the problem – Don’t – this is a scam.

She says: “A stroke is the leading cause of disability but there are ways to reduce your risk of developing the life-threatening condition. Aiming for, or maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do to reduce the risk of having a stroke. Before I joined Slimming World I wasn’t aware that being overweight is one of the top ten risk factors for stroke and is associated with almost 1 in 5 strokes”

“Combined with eating healthily, being joolsmarj@btinternet.com active can also help keep the heart healthy, which in turn can help protect against a stroke. In our Slimming World group, we share recipe ideas and talk about the different ways we stay active including making the most of the great outdoors or going for a walk each day. By sharing experiences, celebrating success and talking through challenges members learn about themselves as slimmers, so they can make changes that they really can keep up for life. There’s no better place for support to help put you in control than a Slimming World group, where there will be absolutely no judgement – just understanding, trust, friendship, community spirit and lots of fun and laughter”.
