Welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines. March signifies the start of Spring and lets hope we start seeing some better weather, perhaps even some sunshine! It looks set to be a busy month with plenty happening across the island and you can find details of events listed in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 14 and 15. On Sunday 11th March is Mothering Sunday and towards the end of the month on the 30th is the start of Easter. Unfortunately we lose an hour of well earned sleep in March as the clocks go forward the last Sunday of the month, this being the 25th but on the other hand we will start to see the lighter evenings which is always something to be cheerful about.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown As your Town and County Councillor, I regularly have to deal with issues such as overflowing dog bins, parking problems and missed bin collections. Whilst I see this as an essential part of my councillor role, there are also the occasions when I’m privileged to witness events that make me incredibly proud to be representing Sandown. I doubt that there is a single resident of Sandown who isn’t aware of the plight of Sandown Bay Academy and its staff, parents and students who have come together in an awe-inspiring show of force.

A few weeks ago, I attended the Holocaust Day Memorial Service. It was very moving, especially to hear from direct descendants of those affected and how the horrors of war had impacted on their lives and the lives of those who were innocent, yet made to suffer. The service brought together people of all races and religions to remember, reflect and resolve to work towards a better future.

Another occasion that happened that made me feel a part of a very special community was when local café owner Ali Smith’s business was vandalised, with a window Last month, the Island Rotary Clubs organised being broken and the flower planters that had the annual “Youth Speaks” event as part of been lovingly tended by our Community Kids, a National Rotary Club competition. Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Thanks to all residents involved in the Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the bombing of St Paul’s Church, and the dedication of the Commemorative Mural – we know that many residents that remember the events of the time appreciated the opportunity to pay tribute to the victims, and ensure that future generations have an understanding of the events.

Community Library, and, with Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre and Carers IW, we have secured a Tablet and IT Training, as well as some accessible furniture for younger users of the Library – we continue to be surprised by the number of groups and services provided at and from the Library and this vital service is something the Town Council will continue to support.

We would also like to thank all those that have contacted us regarding other potential commemorative initiatives, including projects at the War Memorial and in Tower Cottage Gardens, and we hope to take several forward – the Town Council has allocated funding for the Town Clock, bombed in World War 2, and for commemorative benches at the Memorial (and thanks again to Curator Terry for his ongoing work to maintain the high standard of this and other locations).

Shanklin VYCC have secured funding to run soft tennis activities for its increasing number of users, and have also secured national funding to help develop activities such as Table Tennis alongside its weekly programme of events – which includes the Thursday older persons social club. NB The Centre is planning to organise a special Sports Relief evening in March to fundraise, as well as highlight the range of activities provided to young people in Shanklin and from across the Island.

Shanklin’s Royal British Legion, in addition to hosting the Commemorative Mural, are also planning commemorative events to mark the Centenary of the end of World War 1, and we hope to involve both local schools and the community Library in the events planned. UPCOMING PROJECTS - The Town Council have recognised the financial challenges facing the Town, and are preparing a budget to protect local services, such as grass cutting, grounds maintenance, school crossing patrols, beach safety, the ongoing improvements of the Toilets and Public Space, possible developments with the Community Library and Town Office, and continued support of Carnival, Regatta, Band Concerts, and other activities valued by local residents. We greatly appreciate the value of the work of Maria and all the volunteers at the

Funding has been allocated to environmental work at Rylstone Gardens on the cliff, as well as along Keats Green – this is in partnership with the local authority and we hope to complete the work before Easter. Shanklin FC’s County Ground are also hosting the Amey/IW Council Recycling Amenity between 10am and 2pm on 7th and 22nd March, as well as 5th and 24th April – we know this is a much used amenity that has helped increase recycling rates on the Island and provide a convenient facility for local residents in Shanklin and Lake. Age UK Isle of Wight; Helping you stay safe and comfortable in your own home. The Age UK Isle of Wight Handyperson Service has been helping island residents to live independently in their own homes for more than 5 years. As of 31st March 2018 the Handyperson service is changing, and will no longer be commissioned by IW Council to provide free labour for small jobs. This loss of funding means that from 1st April, all handyperson services supplied by Age UK IW will be charged for, under their Home Safe Service. However, recognising the continued need for this vital service in our communities, the charity is committed to providing an outstanding service at a reasonable price. Our staff are employed by Age UK IW, they have a wealth of experience and knowledge, are reliable and trustworthy, and have full DBS checks and insurance. As well as the peace of mind you will get from using trusted tradespeople you’ll also be supporting a vital local charity. Any profits from the Home Safe Service go directly to helping provide Age UK Isle of Wight’s free charitable services.

Our Home Safe team can help you with:

• Advice on home safety adaptations • Fitting doorbells & external key safes • Installing grab rails & other adaptations, both internal & external • Installing smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors • Fitting locks & security chains • Fitting plug sockets & light fixtures (and other minor electrical jobs) • Power washing paths, patios & driveways • Moving & assembling furniture, flat-pack, etc • Building steps & ramps • Hanging shelving, picture frames, mirrors, blinds & curtain rails • Fence & gate repairs • Minor carpentry & plumbing work • Low-level guttering maintenance & clearing • General household repairs This list is by no means exhaustive and no job is too small, if it’s important to you, it’s important to us. We don’t charge for call-outs and offer a very competitive hourly rate, plus you can have any mix of jobs in one visit. The Home Safe Service is available to all adults over 18, living on the Isle of Wight.
