A very warm welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. It looks set to be a busy month, starting with Shrove Tuesday on the 5th and then Mother’s Day, and don’t forget the clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday of the month. Although we lose a valuable hour in bed we will start seeing lighter evenings. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 14 and 15 are packed full with events happening across the island during March. I always like to give a small mention about the weather but I’m really at a loss of what to say this time except did you enjoy the small scattering of snow we had a few weeks back and do you think we can expect to see more of it like we did in March last year or shall we keep our fingers crossed that the cold weather has been and gone.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Dear Residents The Town Council will have set the budget for 2019/20, and this includes provision for improvements to the Public Conveniences on the revetment (residents will recall the desperate state of toilet provision when the Town Council took over responsibility, and the commitment the Town has made to continually improve the quality of provision, cleaning and extending opening hours within our limited resource, and alongside competing needs) – and this will also, regrettably, include £11,000 of rates to the Local Authority in addition to anticipated running costs. We have also progressed plans to relocate the Community Library, to Falcon Cross, and we hope to have an exhibition of the plans on the afternoon of Friday 29th March 2019, with the Island’s new Lord Lieutenant (Mrs Susie Sheldon) unveiling the plans with the Town Mayor Steve Knight – we hope to involve local school children and make the occasion special for all involved. The plans will include creating a young readers section, links to Falcon Cross Hall for exhibitions and special events, creating an outdoor area for teas/coffee, and provision of information services (for tourists, bus users, and other community services). Shanklin’s commitment to invest in this much loved amenity, is part of an ongoing programme of investment in the resources of the Town – from Playground Equipment, War Memorial, Town Clock and similar 4
initiatives – we also hope to be able to support the renovation of the Chalet in Rylstone, following the incredible achievements of the Town Brass Band (and we wish them well as they prepare for the National Championships in Torquay). TOWN ACTIVITIES We are supporting commemorative events to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings and preparations (in which Shanklin and the Chine played an integral role), and other activities linked to both major conflicts. The Town has expressed its concerns about the introduction of overnight car park charges, and the development plans for car parks along the Esplanade – residents and local businesses should be fully consulted over any plans and implications for the future, and the need to ensure developments include recognition of impact on the local infrastructure. Shanklin Theatre’s March programme includes Sherlock Holmes’ Sign of Four, Gaelforce Dance (Friday 8th), Collabro (Monday 25th), Comedian Mark Steel (Thursday 28th) and Elkie Brooks (Saturday 30th) – and future programmes continue to offer a breadth and quality of shows that appeal to all. Partnership work, with Lake Parish and Sandown Town Councils, continue with plans for a bay-wide leaflet on locations of defibrillators, and thanks to Mark Watson continued over the page
Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued for his work developing the project – requests have also been submitted to install recycling bins along the revetment, as well as other initiatives to enhance provision to tourists and residents. Shanklin Cricket Club continue with Monday evening net practice, and more details are available on the Clubs website; with the junior sides still competing well in the Rew Valley Indoor League. Shanklin Football Club, following significant renovation and repair work, hope to introducing a new youth side for 2019/20 and community volunteers are welcome (see website for contact details).

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown As most of you will be aware, we held a public consultation in Sandown and I would like to personally thank everyone who attended. It was good to be able to discuss the issues that affect our town and consider ways forward. Change for the good is happening in Sandown, and I am keen to build on this great community spirit that we are now seeing. I am making sure that your views are being put forward in council meetings and will continue to participate in full to represent you. If you weren’t able to attend the public consultation, or you haven’t had a chance to look yet, we now have an Eastern Bay Regeneration Vision document which sets out some exciting and innovative options for Sandown and The Bay. You can access this online at: iwightinvest.com/regeneration-prospectus/ eastern-bay-regeneration-vision/. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this further or have any comments to make. I feel quite strongly that we need to do more to support our young people in Sandown. Please contact me if you are available on Tuesday evenings during term time from 3pm until 6pm to help with a new youth group that I’m in the process of setting up in Sandown. In my role as your County Councillor, I spoke at Full Council on various issues on your behalf. The agendas for the council meetings are published 5 working days in advance at iwight.com. Please contact me if there are any issues that concern you particularly as I want to represent my residents as fairly and effectively as I can. I need your input to do this to the full. I also represent you on the 10
main Scrutiny Committee and the Policy and Scrutiny Committee for Children’s Services. I am currently involved with the careers department of The Bay CE School, but am looking to become more involved with schools across the island to work towards improving educational standards islandwide. I have now completed my councillor improvement training with the Local Government Association. They are a strong voice to lobby government on issues that affect the day to day lives of residents. In the coming months, I will be looking to engage in further training with the LGA that will equip me to serve you better at a local level and I will be attending the annual LGA Conference in July. I have had a busy month with residents’ issues including parking, planning, housing issues, road safety and health and safety at work. I always try to respond to questions and issues raised promptly, and deal with them sensitively. I am happy to meet on a one to one basis to discuss individual issues with residents. Please contact me by any of the methods above. Don’t forget, Councillor Heather Humby holds a councillor surgery at Sandown Library every Saturday from 11am – 12pm (please note the change of time and day). She can also be contacted on 402024 and at heatherhumby@sandowntowncouncil. gov.uk Thank you for your continued trust in me.

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 IW COUNCIL BUDGET FOR 2019/20. Councillors have carefully considered the budget for 2019/20 and while we must close a budget gap of £5.5m we have done our best not to remove services from the vulnerable or damage regeneration efforts. Raising revenue, not cuts has been our priority without raising charges if possible. We have resisted proposals to introduce parking charges in local High Streets, but there will be a small increase for permits which have not risen in 5 years, and there will also be small rises in charges for some other services SANDOWN REGENERATION UPDATE – PART 3 We are now introducing measures to discourage homes being left empty for years, developments not being built despite having planning permission and compulsory purchase of property where the owner is neglecting it. Below are some of the measures to be taken: Council Tax on Empty Properties. Previously the maximum level of council tax on an empty property was 50%, but now the following will apply: a. properties empty for 2 years; the owner will pay full 100% council tax. b. properties empty for between 2 & 5 years, the owner will pay 200% c. properties empty for more than 5 years the owner will pay 300%

For more information contact Nickie Short on 07799 032824 My name is Nickie Short and I teach yoga on www.yogaisleofwight.co.uk the Isle of Wight. I have lived on the Island for 16 years with my family and I love dog walking, swimming in the sea and sharing this wonderful part of the world with my husband and friends. Since leaving school I have spent 30 plus years working with people with a wide range of physical and mental health problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities and those who are generally finding life challenging. I have been practising yoga for 30 years and teaching for almost 20. When working with groups or individuals I take time to determine where they are now, where they want to be and how helping them work through the challenges from A to B. Although everyone is different there are many common themes: people lack awareness of their physical needs, lack self confidence, want to find some ‘peace’ or contentment, want to feel less stressed, get anxious, experience pain (physical and emotional) and lack of sleep to varying degrees. I currently run teacher training courses for yoga teachers, hold regular retreats, run weekly general classes on the Island, carry out regular one2one appointments and teach yoga for recovery for individuals and organisations.
