Mad as a March Hare When looking for inspiration for this month’s front cover, I immediately thought of the saying ‘Mad as a March Hare’ and it was only natural that my first thoughts turned to local ‘Hare Whisperer’ Nick Edwards to use one of his many amazing hare photos. Amongst the hundreds he has taken this one caught my eye and shows the beauty of these wonderful animals.

Many of you will already be aware of how Nick spends his time waiting patiently at various locations across the Island ready to capture the hares in their natural surroundings and we have been very lucky to feature his photos over the last couple of years and I look forward to seeing more of them.

Spring is just around the corner... although the island has taken a battering recently with storm Ciara and storm Dennis the temperatures have been very mild up to this point. For weeks now there have been signs of Spring with daffodils and crocus already in bloom in gardens and hedges. Mothering Sunday is on the 22nd March and don’t forget the clocks always change on the last weekend of March, so this year, that falls on Sunday 29th. With the warmer weather coming soon seasonal businesses will soon be opening their doors to locals and visitors. The island will start coming alive with local events. Our ‘Dates for you Diary’ section on pages 8 and 9 will keep you busy and there is something for everyone including regular community events or one-off social engagements.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Hopefully, residents have seen the work of Tim and Ben renovating the Falcon Cross building, and installing new equipment for the opening of Shanklin’s Community Library on 20th Friday March 2020, in the morning. The Town Council have funded the Community Library, since closed by IW Council, and the design for the new amenity has been developed by volunteers, alongside the Town Council’s steering group, led by the Town Mayor Steve Knight. New insulation, upgraded CCTV for security of both the library and the award winning public conveniences (as well as Town Office in the future), links to IW Library service, facilities for volunteers, and maximum shelving are all features of the new amenity – and plans for a special opening are well in hand, including a preview evening for representatives of local community groups. The Town Council’s draft budget also includes funding for possible summer reading groups, as well as other initiatives based at the Community Library/Falcon Cross, and once the Library Team are in situ, there will be further opportunities on site. Budgetary provision has also been made to support planting in Rylstone and along the esplanade (if IW Council remove funding), other areas where the IW Council have cut services, and continue funding of Road Crossing Patrol, Hanging Baskets and Flower Troughs, Commemorative events, Community
Library, Carnival/Regatta and other events; grounds maintenance, Public Toilet provision and many other services and projects: the Town has 3 part time staff and is supported by Town Councillors that undertake many responsibilities voluntarily, in order to keep the Town precept as low as possible. Concerns have also been raised about anti-social behaviour in nearby bus shelters, and other locations across the Town, and Town Councillors have been pro-active raising these concerns with the appropriate authorities, as well as encouraging residents to report issues directly. NB We are also aware of rough sleepers in the Town, and have asked the appropriate support agencies to help those that need it. Shanklin Town Council is continuing the process of agreeing a budget for 2020 onwards, recognising the likelihood of further reductions in service provision by the Isle of Wight Council – we are planning a consultation event this month to help set priorities and shape the budget for 2020/21 and beyond. We have previously supported improvements to the accessibility of Age Concern 50+ Shanklin in Regent Street, and their volunteers continue to provide a comprehensive programme of activities (and subsidised lunches and transport) for their members, including Crafting Days to learn new skills on 8th and 22nd.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin Good Luck to Shanklin’s Town Brass Band when they travel to Torquay on Saturday 14th, to take part in the SW National Brass Band Championships – as ever they have practiced throughout the winter and, in addition to the near completion of the Rylstone Chalet (now scaffold-less), the Band continues to host introductory sessions for the community. Congratulations, for another successful year for Shanklin Rotary’s sale at Lower Hyde, generating around £40,000, benefitting countless local charities and voluntary groups, as well as providing bargains for all that visited the sale: the volunteers that made this event possible gave up weeks preparing for the event, as well as afterwards – that’s in addition to the 2 weeks on site – thank you all.
Looking forward, the Town is working on plans for the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, including a Bay Church Service planned for Sunday 3rd May 2020, at Christ Church, on the Broadway in Sandown. Jon Gilbey & Richard Priest

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown As we head towards Spring and longer days, I’m reminded of how much I enjoy the island through all of the seasons, but Spring is my favourite. We are incredibly blessed in Sandown with our beautiful golden beach and open spaces such as Brown’s Golf Course and Culver Cliff. I have been active this month attending the bus and rail users group where I met the recently appointed project manager for Southern Rail, who reassured me that the promised investment in Island Line is still planned with new trains being trialled later this year and, if the trials are successful, coming into service in 2021. Sandown is a safe place to live, but we can all work together to combat crime on our streets. If you see anything untoward, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Also, if you are aware of anyone sleeping rough, please let me know. It was great to be involved in celebrating our history by playing the violin at the 150th anniversary gathering at Sandown Old Town Hall. There are several people in our community, including myself, keeping up the pressure to bring this building back into use and I’m grateful for their support. I regularly attend the South Wight Health and Wellbeing Forum to be your voice in the redesign of local health services, especially in light of recent closures of GP clinics, ensuring that no one “falls through the net”. I also attended an addiction and substance misuse workshop, to gain a greater understanding of the root cause, 10
followed by a serious violence reduction conference the following day, and also a mental health briefing. It occurred to me the other day that when I first became interested in local government, I knew nothing about the process other than turning up at the ballot box and marking the paper provided with a cross. My interest was sparked by wanting to make a difference in my local community. I remain committed to that purpose, but I’ve also found a new way of life, new friends and new challenges. I’m looking for like-minded people to join me, but be prepared, it may change your life! Be ambitious for Sandown, I am. Following requests from residents, I am now holding a surgery on the first Saturday of every month at the Yaverland Sailing Club from 11 until 12 and my thanks go to the YSC for their support. I hope that this will make it easier for residents to come and see me to discuss issues. However, I continue to be available by phone, email, on Facebook or by appointment if you prefer. Don’t forget Councillor Heather Humby’s councillor surgery at Sandown Library every Saturday from 11am – 12pm, or you can contact her on 402024 or heatherhumby@sandowntowncouncil. gov.uk Please get in touch by the means above if you have any issues that you would like to discuss. I’m happy to meet up for a chat if you prefer.

How often do we find ourselves saying that or something similar? We live in a society which is increasingly always on, competitive and demanding – even on our quiet Island.

This sense of “always on” can become overwhelming and leave us tired and stressed, maybe depressed or anxious. Into this melee comes our breath – pausing for a few moments and noticing how we are breathing, slowing our breath down and bringing it down from our ribs to our belly, gives us that precious time to literally “catch our breath” and regulate our responses to life around us. As a Yoga Therapist much of my work comes down to teaching simple breath practices to support the nervous system. However, both SWR and the DFT have confirmed that the total £52m investment in Island and Ryde Pier would be invested despite the status of the franchise holder. In addition, another £15m is anticipated for the Ryde Interchange area as part of the South East Hampshire Rapid Transport scheme. It is hoped that the first of the new trains will be on the Island in the summer, followed by the rest by the end of the year. It is anticipated that they will be in service in 2021.
