May 2016
Dear Readers Welcome to the May issue and thank you for picking up a copy. This months issue is once again packed with local community news and information. The Island is springing to life again and there are plenty of events happening in May and you’ll find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 8 and 9. In this months issue you will also find a recipe on page 18 which has been tried and tested by myself and these biscuits were a big hit. They are very easy to make and can be enjoyed with a nice cup of tea whilst doing the puzzles on page 14. Whilst writing this the sun is shining, I’m not sure how long for though but lets hope its here to stay so we can start enjoying our beautiful Island and some of the great walks and outdoor activities it has to offer. Please keep using the services of the advertisers and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. Until next month...

Shanklin Chine & Fisherman’s Cottage...two magnificent places to relax and eat The Island’s oldest tourist attraction truly is a spectacle of nature. Carved by Mother Nature’s own hands over thousands of years, the stunning tree lined gorge that is Shanklin Chine cuts its way from Shanklin Old Village to the sandy beach and esplanade far below. Where better to spend an afternoon enjoying a relaxing cream tea? The Chine’s “original” Isle of Wight cream tea has been enjoyed by visitors for nearly 200 years. You can stop, relax and take in the beauty of the nature all around you. Indulge in fresh home-made cakes, scones and light lunches, refreshments are also available all day come rain or shine. New for 2016: “Julia Margaret Cameron’s Island Landscapes exhibition” A rare and special collection of previously unseen landscape photographs from the pioneering Victorian photographer, including a photo of Shanklin Chine’s waterfall. Nestled just beneath Shanklin Chine at the far end of Shanklin Esplanade you will find Fisherman’s Cottage, Shanklin’s original dining pub on the beach and now under NEW management. Frequented by discerning Island visitors and savvy locals, this is one of the best kept Isle of Wight secrets. Boasting the most enviable beachfront location that never fails to disappoint, Fisherman’s Cottage is famed for its home cooked lunches and dinners, specialising in locally caught seafood which can be found on the daily specials board. Don’t miss Chine Lumière. Visitors are encouraged to return at night over the summer months and during October when hundreds of lights illuminate the narrow paths, streams and waterfalls held within, a truly magical experience. Tickets now on sale and include a FREE return trip!

Sandown Report from Heather Humby - Telephone 01983 402024 E.mail heather.humby@sky.com 7, Pier Street, Sandown, PO36 8JR SANDOWN STATION - At the recent meeting of Sandown Town Council, Cllr.Ward, reported on the current situation regarding the Railway Station premises. Although the cafe, situated at Sandown Railway Station, was forced to shut down, fortunately the Community Rail Partnership (CRP) have managed to negotiate with South West Trains, and now intends to reopen the station premises, with an Old Time Tea House, run by the Bunker Sisters. Other rooms will be set aside for use as clinics, advice centre’s etc, and could form a community hub.
at a lower cost. Isle of Wight Council have reaffirmed that Island Line should remain an integral part of the South Western Rail franchise, and also added a clause in their recommendation (proposed by Cllr. Blezzard) to the Department of Transport, requesting that the franchise specification include an obligation for the franchisee to work with ferry operators to ensure connectivity between services.
Death of Bob Ashendon - The death of Bob will be a sad loss to the community of Sandown. LOCAL POLICING PRIORITIES FOR SANDOWN - Bob had been a long time member of the Following consultation with the community, the Sandown - Shanklin Lions Club, and was following priorities have been identified in the instrumental in founding the Swim Marathon at the Heights Leisure Centre, which over many Sandown neighbourhood. years, raised funds for various local charities. Priority is to be given to the following: The use of mopeds and motorcycles in an anti social manner, causing concern to local residents. The areas identified include Avenue Road, Carter Street, Esplanade, Sandham Gardens (including the Skate Park), and Yaverland car park. Full details of the report may be seen on the Hampshire and Isle of Wight website. FUTURE OF ISLAND LINE - The Island Line consultation period ended in March, and the Department of Transports decision is now awaited.
BEACH CLEANING - As you are aware. Beach Cleaning, and the provision of Life Guards on Sandown Beach. Is now the responsibility of Sandown Town Council. Therefore, I believe that the Isle of Wight Council, should now be obligated to pass on the rents, paid by beach concessionaires, to Sandown Council, thus alleviating some of the additional costs that have been incurred by the Sandown tax payer. SANDOWN HIGH STREET RESURFACING - It was stated that the High Street would be resurfaced last April, but once again it was postponed! However, I am assured that the work will now proceed at the end of April. Fingers crossed!
SANDOWN SKATE BOARD PARK - A successful skate board competition was held on Easter The local report produced by Chris Garnett, stated that massive investment was needed to Saturday, and was well attended by skaters from allow Island Line to continue in it’s current form. all over the Island. The event was organised by The report also states that most organisations the Sandown Community Partnership, under the consulted accepted that any investment should chairmanship of Councillor Teasdale. be directed towards a ‘Light Rail’ system, that NEW SUPERMARKET FOR LAKE - It is anticipated would allow the current level of service to be continued, with the possibility of expansion, all that the new Audi supermarket may open at the beginning of September. 6
Sandown Report from Heather Humby FIRST ACT 2011. MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY First Act, a theatre group for people with learning disabilities, staged their annual Easter production at Shanklin Theatre, and entertained a packed audience for their version of ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ (If you have never seen a ‘First Act’ show, may I recommend you make a date for their Christmas production!) SANDOWN TOWN COUNCIL OFFICE - Having now taken on extra responsibilities, Sandown Council are currently discussing the possibilities of establishing an office in the High Street. Personally,I believe the council should be considering taking over Sandown Town Hall, which could provide an office and also space for the additional equipment now required. The future use of the Broadway Centre site is also under discussion, and if the council do decide to sell the site, the Town Hall, situated in the centre of the town, seems an excellent alternative, especially if the Isle of Wight Council, grant a ‘peppercorn’ rent. The Town Hall would also serve as a ‘Community Hub’ for use by many local organisations. I would appreciate the views of Sandown Residents.

Kudo Rock Ltd is a unique company which was set-up in 2014 by Zoe Lortal. Zoe was Island born and bred, but grew up in Hampshire. She moved back to the Island 7 years ago with her family and set up ‘Kudo Rock’ to engage more people in equestrian activities. She wanted to help get the talented horses and riders moving up the competition ladder, by selling shares in the horses. In her first year she won the prestigious Venus Award (Portsmouth) for ‘New Media, Technology and Online Business’. Following this, Kudo Rock now also provides coach trips from the Island to some of the Uk’s major equestrian events, as well as clinics on the island and yard/ training sessions at professional yards on the mainland. Her newest venture is an event called ‘Isle Rodeo’ – to be held in Newchurch on 23rd July. Students from St Blasius Primary Academy have been working hard on various projects to celebrate The Queens 90th Birthday. As well as various designs for a commemorative mug and portraits the students have put together some poems and here are just a selection of some of them. I am NOT ready, NOT today Today is not the day to say ‘HOORAY’! I’m eighty-nine forever, forever I will be. All the kids laugh and shout ha-ha, tee-hee. I’m beautiful, I don’t want to be old. You never know I could go bald? I hope Philip hasn’t organised a surprise. I hope he’s been loving, thoughtful and wise. Maybe I’m over thinking all of this, But being eighty-nine I would miss. I’m not sure, it could be a blast? Okay, I’m ready to become older at last! By Faith Good (Yr 5 - St Blasius)
Some pictures are long, Some wide or some tall But none compare to that Beautiful one in Buckingham Palace! Not dramatic nor grumpy But just enigmatic........ Selfless, serious and calm in one portrait None compare to this picture. The blue dress - so suitable The selfless expression - so divine. Have you set eyes on the only Powerful picture in the world! ‘oooooooh!’ say tourists ‘Aaaaaaaah!’ say commonfolk All shall admire this Brilliant royal painting. This picture is a marvel, No mess, scrapes or smudge For it’s the Queen’s 90th Birthday! By Tristan Northard (yr 5 - St Blasius)

Through the hectic, bustling London City Through the harsh plethora of racket and din Through the solemn and miserable pity, Through the cruel evil and sin. Through the alley, round the corner In your mind and soul We love her, adore her, And her heart of wealth and gold Inside the golden gate, Lives a presence of pride. How did she become Queen? Maybe fate An amazing Queen! Mentally by our side. The Queen, she’s pure Like the newly born, Ruling over us evermore, Through happy days and storm. By Anastakja Milewska (yr 6 St Blasius)
Down that street, through that town Here it is, her majesty’s crown Philip dear, for dinner I want pasta bake And a large four-tier birthday cake. I hope Philip was being helpfully wise And ordered my dress in the right size. I have a very good prize, For who can make me and Philip the best disguise. Homemade Ginger Biscuits I came across this recipe recently on social media. It was shared by a friend of a friend of a friend!!!! I do love a ginger biscuit and normally settle for a shop brought packet as I have never tried making them before. These are very easy to make and taste lovely the only problem with them is I have made them three times now and each time they have come out differently. The first batch had a nice sharp crispness to them with a beautiful snap that even Mary Berry would be proud of. The second batch were softer and more like a cookie but just as nice and the third batch was really gooey and chewy and I felt like it gave my mouth a good workout which again is no bad thing. I hope you enjoy making them and let me know how yours turn out as it will be interesting to see…

In a saucepan gently stir and warm the butter, syrup and sugar until butter is melted and well mixed. Remove from the heat. Sieve together flour, bicarb and ginger and stir into the melted butter, syrup and sugar mix. Form into a soft dough. Place small balls (about 1 teaspoon of mix) onto a greased baking tray. About 12 per tray and flatten slightly. They flatten and spread during baking. Bake for 15 minutes or until the colour is right for ginger biscuits and the top looks slightly rough. Remove from oven and cool slightly in the tray then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy with a nice cup of tea…. 18

Ventnor Botanic Garden’s Festival of Flower Fireworks Mid May to Mid June There is a period in the early part of the summer at Ventnor Botanic Garden when plant fanatics like to visit more than at any other time of the year. From around mid May up to the first half of June the Garden has more flowers in bloom than at any other time of the growing season, a period now fondly referred to as its Festival of Flower Fireworks. One plant in particular is responsible for creating this most impressive of floral spectacles... the Echium. Pronounced “ek’-i-um” or Echium pininana to give it a Latin title, this plant can’t fail to impress with its enormous flower spikes growing to over 3 meters tall that give rise to an explosion of thousands of tiny blue flowers in the early summer. The sheer size, shape and dazzling colour of the Echium are truly something to marvel.
Echium pininana evolved in isolation on the Canary Island of La Palma where it finds a natural niche in the harsh dry conditions of the Islands lauraceous forests. Here the species have evolved into plants that are of monstrous size. Echiums seeds were given to Ventnor Botanic Garden nearly 30 years ago by the La Palma Botanic Garden. Ever since then the population here on the Isle of Wight seems to have flourished by self-seeding in the warm sheltered climate of the Ventnor undercliff. Readers can get £1 off admission to Ventnor Botanic Garden in May to see the spectacular Echium display towards the end of the month using the special voucher on the main advert below.
