Welcome to the May issue and thank you for picking up a copy. May is set to be a busy month, what with the two Bank Holidays and lots happening across the Island. You can find details of these events on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 14 and 15. We must now keep our fingers crossed for some good weather.

This month we have teamed up with Isle of Wight Cats Protection to find some forever homes for their Senior Kitizens. These mature cats are still so loving and wonderful companions and we had the hard task of choosing just five of them to be the stars of our feature, which you can read on page 10.

This months front cover certainly made a splash and you can read about the photographer on page 4. As usual this month is packed with news and information and is supported by some great advertisers. I hope you have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

Swan Lake or Swan Splash!!! I think you will agree with me that this months front cover is stunning and we are very lucky to have so many talented local photographers on the Island. This beautiful swan certainly made a splash and professional photographer Sienna Anderson was lucky enough to be there at the right time and place to capture the moment. Sienna has lived on the Island for 42 years and is still amazed daily at the wonderful flora and fauna that surrounds us. She is always up for a photographic challenge and is at her happiest when she is on the water, capturing sunsets/sunrises and nature.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Hopefully, we will all be enjoying improved weather and being able to take part in Maytime events, such as the Royal Wedding (Age Concern and local schools are planning events – the Town Council, with Lake Parish Council are supporting), and we hope to be taking forward some major initiatives for the Town. SHANKLIN COMMUNITY LIBRARY Following the cut in funding by IW Council, the Town Council have confirmed increased support for Shanklin’s Community Library, recognising the efforts of volunteers to increase the range and quality of activities available at the library, the increasing demand for IT services at the Library, and the projected future demand. At a recent well-attended meeting, members supported the proposal to relocate the Library to Falcon Cross, and seek to develop a ‘HOTEL’ concept (Hub, Office, Toilets, Education & Library), with feasibility work being undertaken in the Summer. The Town Council have allocated funding to progress the provision of an office, to meet the increasing range of services for which the Council is responsible, and will provide a facility capable of use by partner agencies; and have also budgeted for a renovation of the former public toilet site (space released by the investment in the new toilet block). Members discussed creating a resource that included an additional Tourist information Point (Shanklin had the Island’s first in 2013), provision to support the Bus Station,
running adult learning courses, and improving I T provision: the project would complement the activities available at Falcon Cross Hall (itself developed from a former Toilet block). It was also recognised that, if the project was feasible, the current library site should be used for the benefit of local residents, and the investment made by the Town Council, to date, should not be lost and support sought for the new project. Thanks again to all involved for attending the meeting, and for all of the contributions made, and a further meeting is planned once the Town Council are clearer on the feasibility of the proposals, the space freed up on the Falcon Cross site, and the possibility of grant support to increase the range of activities available at the new site. OTHER PROJECTS Hopefully, by the time of publication, scaffolding will be in place at the United Reform Church, and the Town Council’s commitment to restoring the Town Clock, originally damaged in World War 2, be closer to realisation: the whole project is planned to take in the order 3 months, and it is hoped to have a special event during the Summer, to recognise the history of the location and the wider role it has played in the development of the Town. The Town Council have also funded extensive environmental work at Rylstone Gardens and Keats Green, as well as other sites along the cliff edge, and hope this improves the public realm and the experience of visitors,
Monthly News Report for Shanklin
and residents, alike: the Town Council would always like to do more, but are very mindful of the costs, other pressures, and the dangers of over-committing resources as experienced by other councils on the Island. Proudly, the Town continues to support the nationally acclaimed Town Brass Band, and welcome their first Sunday performances of the season on 13th and 27th May from 3pm – as ever they have a full programme arranged for the forthcoming season. We hope that plans are in place to provide commemorative benches at the War Memorial, in Shanklin Old Village, the Town Council (and Memorial Curator) have allocated funds, and are working with the local fire service, Royal British Legion, and Churches, to provide seats commemorating the 45 Fire Fighters and Residents that died, in Shanklin, in World War 2.

AND FINALLY We’d like to thank all residents that continue to contact us regarding concerns and compliments about Shanklin, from the need for a bus shelter (not just a bus stop!) in Victoria Avenue, to thanks for the quality of Public Toilets (nb the franchise for a kiosk at Tower Cottage should be awarded soon – subsidising the provision of toilets in the Town, including the £11,000 business rates charged by the IW Council).

Senior Kitizens
Island Magazines has got together with the Isle of Wight Cats Protection Adoption Centre to let you know about some of the wonderful senior kitizens who are waiting for their forever home. You will definitely fall in love with these older cats and please don’t let their age put you off. Cats regularly live into their late teens or older these days, so most seniors will have many years of love to give. Older cats are usually more homely and have great personalities making them wonderful companions. Will is a very handsome 8 year old short haired black and white cat. He can be both chilled out and playful and likes to chase string and play with toys and other times like to be quiet and by himself. He doesn’t want to live with other animals and definitely likes the outdoors. Dizzy is a sweet natured independent mature lady. She doesn’t ask for much - a warm bed, yummy food and fuss. She is a 13 year old Tabby who doesn’t want to live with other cats and although a little older she is still young at heart. Dizzy cannot be rehomed to some areas of Ryde or Yarmouth. Maisy is a black and white 14 year old who really just wants her own comfy space in a quiet loving home. She can be very affectionate and loves a gentle stroke now and then. She doesn’t demand much attention but she’ll quite happily come to you when you approach and will purr away. Maisy seems very content to just chill out, so she could possibly be an indoor cat.
Suki loves the company of humans but not other animals. She enjoys being made a fuss of and will happily rub around you but she is not a hugger. Suki is Tabby and white and is a young 10 year old. Her dream home is a nice quite place to relax with a garden to nose around and a comfy armchair for naps. Suki cannot be rehomed in Ryde. Dora is a stunning 16 year old tortoiseshell and white cat. Dora’s owner went in to care, and she misses having a soulmate around. Dora likes pottering about in the garden. She isn’t the world’s biggest lap fan, but will happily follow you about. She has lived with a doggy before so may be ok to do so again.
FOSTER CARERS NEEDED
Do you have a spare room and time to make a difference? Cats Protection is in need of fosterers who can devote some time and love to socialise kittens or care for a cat not ready for adoption. You supply the love and CP will supply the rest and pay for all medical costs. If you are unable to commit to having a cat full time this could be for you? All support and training given (online training) Please call CP if you think you can help.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown As the first anniversary of my election is here, I thought that I would take a moment to reflect on what a life-changing year it’s been. My role as your town and county councillor quickly became a full-time one, but it’s time that I consider well spent and I am determined to honour the commitment that I made to serve residents to the best of my ability when I was elected last May. I have focused on two main areas, education and regeneration. After the election, I quickly became involved in the fight to save secondary education in Sandown with the threat of AET’s proposed closure of Sandown Bay Academy. I was determined to use my new position to support staff, parents and students at the highest level and the positive outcome of an all-through school run by an excellent, proven team outside of Academy control is a testament to what can be achieved when everyone works together for a common aim. I have since become involved with both the SBA student council and the Youth Council and will continue to offer my support in the years to come. My first year has seen the regeneration agenda being set and a lot of work being done behind the scenes to determine the needs of the island in terms of the shape that a regeneration strategy should take. I have been working across council departments, including meeting with planning officers to identify ways of tackling issues such as empty/dilapidated/derelict properties, finding ways to deliver more affordable housing and make better use of and enhance our sporting facilities, especially in Sandown. It’s been my privilege so far to represent you on several committees looking at education 12
and regeneration, but also health provision on the island. I have had meetings with our MP, Bob Seely, as part of a Sports Strategy Group and also as part of a think tank looking at higher education provision on the island. It’s not been all about meetings though. As your councillor, I’ve also received many invitations to represent you at various island events, including presenting the end of season medals to Sandown Football team, the annual Sports Awards which saw Sandown and Shanklin Rowing Club picking up several awards, and meeting the lady Mayor of Coburg. I have learnt a massive amount about local governance procedure and implementation during the past year, not to mention how to keep your cool when those around you are losing theirs and I thank you, my residents, for giving me this amazing, life-changing opportunity. I have remained grounded throughout, mindful of my responsibility to represent you all with openness, honesty and integrity. As those of you who have got to know me will agree, I also bring my own brand of enthusiasm, tenacity and dedication to the role. Rest assured that I will continue to devote my time to serving you and am extremely grateful for the support and encouragement that I have received from residents. Please contact me by any of the above methods if you have any specific issues that you would like me to address. There are many ways in which I can try to help you or I can direct you to organisations that may be able to help. I’m always happy to meet with residents to work together for the benefit of Sandown and the island.
