They provide social activities for over 150 members holding adult social evenings on Fridays and Sundays plus a teenage club which runs on Saturdays. On Tuesday evenings they have a self-help group plus many other activities. John’s Club is based at 67a High Street, Shanklin and runs solely on fund raising and grants and they work hard to involve themselves in activities whenever they can. As a result of the hard work their volunteers did they had the opportunity to open their own shop. The shop is mainly run by their members who work extremely hard to keep the project going plus they also have a Facebook page.
Their aim is to provide items as cheap as possible helping people in the community but also helping to provide a small income for the club. To do this they rely on regular donations and the support of the community. All donations are greatly appreciated and collections can be arranged. They take everything from clothes, toys, books, cds, dvds, furniture etc. For more info about John’s Club or to arrange a collection please phone the office on 856865 (open Monday – Friday 10am – 4pm) 9
Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Dear Residents With Shanklin Town Council, we would like to invite residents to the Public Meeting at Shanklin Theatre on Monday November 21st from 6.30pm to 8.30pm (with doors open from 6pm), with the Agenda covering Public Amenities in Shanklin (including plans for the Lift), Town Council Projects for 2017 and beyond, Shanklin’s Public Realm, and Scotscombe Allotments (and other Allotments and Green Space in Shanklin). We have already secured Sibden Hill and Batts Copse as Local Nature Reserves and, therefore, a protected Green Space for the Town – we recognise the need to support developments where appropriate, especially redeveloping brownfield sites, however we have been very clear that the limited amount of green space in Shanklin should be protected for current and future generations: and we recently organised a site visit for MP Andrew Turner, to meet with Allotment Holders and help support a longer solution to the situation. The Town Council, or us as Local IW Councillors, were not consulted about the IW Council’s decision regarding Scotscombe Allotment, which cost the IW Council £200 a year, a cost which the Association and Town Council offered to pay – these issues will be discussed at the November Public Meeting, as well as providing an opportunity for local residents to express their views on the IW Councils position for the future use of the site. GREEN AWARDS The Town’s recent success in South East 10
England in Bloom, receiving the Coastal Town Award and an overall Bronze Award, reflecting the investment made by the Town Council in Big Mead, Rylstone, Tower Cottage and Sea Front; alongside Green Town Volunteers work at the War Memorial, Community Library, Railway Station, and throughout the Town; as well as recognising the Theatre and the work of Shanklin in Bloom. Shanklin in Bloom was a tremendous success again, thanks to Maureen and the team of volunteers, and the efforts made by Shanklin URC (just celebrating their 175th Anniversary), The Havelock, Bowling Club, Columbus House, and countless other locations, were a credit to all involved – and Ray Ridett’s Garden is an inspiration for all! Many were recognised in Isle of Wight in Bloom, especially Rosalind Wyman’s Cottage Garden which Alan Titchmarsh praised for being packed with plants and colour. AWARDS Our congratulations also goes to England under-25 International Bowler Travis Mellor on retaining his Men’s Singles title recently; on Rev Philip Allen’s 37 years of service at St Paul’s; and Shanklin Green Town’s receiving an award from the Campaign to Protect Rural England. As volunteers at Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre, we’d also like to highlight the Club, since renovation in 1996, is now in its 20th year as TC’s, and still maintains the community values established in the 1960’s, and has recently enabled over 30 volunteers in the Town, to secure First Aid Qualifications.

Are YOU a Survivor of Domestic Abuse? In today’s society it is an unfortunate fact that many people are in abusive relationships. When this eventually comes to a head often the abused goes to a refuge or similar safe place. During the time spent at this safe place they receive excellent training to help them deal with their situation and help them move on to an extent. However, the nature of some abusive relationships is such that many abused people have not been allowed to develop even the most fundamental skills even as an adult. Whilst the training received from the refuge or similar is very good and is a fantastic foundation for moving on, once that support ceases, as it has to, the person may be left in a vulnerable state and risks making the same life style choices in terms of partners as they did before. Unfortunately this means that the same cycle of behaviour repeats and the abused person can end up in a similarly bad relationship and the whole cycle starts again. The Break the Cycle ‘Mind the Gap’ course aims to build on the foundation gained during the period spent in the refuge and equip the abused person emotionally and practically to move forward in a positive way and literally break that cycle. Realistically not everybody is either fortunate enough to go through a refuge or feels that they need to as they may have made their own arrangements. The ‘Mind the Gap’ course is flexible enough to incorporate people coming from diverse situations which may or may not include formal help from refuges or the like. Break the Cycle Community Interest Company has been lucky enough to receive Lottery funding to run courses to help people who have escaped domestic abuse. Whether you have recently moved away from an abusive relationship or are managing to survive after some time, their course, made up of six modules, will help you to live a more fulfilled life, build your confidence and help you move forward. Break the Cycle’s ‘Mind the Gap’ course uses a range of training material that complements each participants learning style. The modules, each of 2 hours duration, are interactive and engaging allowing the participants to learn through practice and experience rather than just theory. Each participant will be given their own journal to track their progress. Are you a sur vivor of domestic abuse? We are looking for volunteers to commit to Would you like to participate in an innovative taking the whole course, at no cost, with the new course designed to move you forward in a positive way & literally break that cycle? proviso that they feed back to the company their opinions on the content, the experience This course is FREE OF CHARGE but you and any other findings. must commit to undertaking all six modules &

The Perfect Shot I think this months front cover picture is so captivating and shows what beautiful wildlife we have here on the Island. The photo was taken at Alum Bay by local wildlife and photography enthusiast Zoe Cox. Zoe says that although she has lived here on the Island all her life it’s only been in the last year or so that she has taken an interest in local wildlife, especially red squirrels, foxes and birds of prey. Zoe is really enjoying her new hobby and only recently brought her camera which goes everywhere she does as she never wants to miss an opportunity to catch a moment in time forever…

When Zoe took this picture there was a group of about 7 foxes but this particular vixen took a liking to Zoe and was happy to sit and pose whilst she snapped away and as you can see she got the ‘perfect shot’. A big thank you to Zoe for allowing us to use this photo and we can’t wait to see what she captures next.

Now Autumn is choices you want to make and who you really here it’s time for stews and goulashes. This are? recipe changes each time I make it as I add Begin building new foundations for your more different ingredients and leave some others relaxed future and learn more deeply and out and you can adapt yours to suit what become more grounded in the single paradigm you have available in the fridge or cupboard. (mind, consciousness, thought). It’s a rustic dish and there is no right way and no wrong way, but the end results is a hearty bowl of goodness which can be served on its own as a vegetarian dish or as a side dish to a roast chicken breast. I call it a goulash but you might think its more of a stew. Residential & Commercial
