Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown I have very much enjoyed this month representing you at many meetings and functions including the Sandown Forum, Yaverland Resident’s Association, Southern Vectis, Religious Education in Schools training, IW Council, a visit to the Safeguarding Hub in Fareham, the IW Association of Local Councils, took part in the IOW Day parade, Adoption Panel training, Corporate Parenting Board, workshop on the future of Dinosaur Isle and a business networking seminar. I attended the first Island Forum Debate which was held at the Riverside Centre. This was well attended and a great opportunity for you to have your say on island issues. The next Island Forum will be held on Wednesday 8th November at Aspire, Ryde and will focus on Social Care. I have met with the assistant education director to make sure that we are still on track for the announcement of the decision on the future of Sandown Bay Academy. I will be doing everything I can to ensure that all staff, parents and, most importantly, students, are supported throughout any transition. I had a fantastic response to my request for parking issues last month and will update you as soon as my recommendations have been approved by Island Roads.

There seems to be an issue with abandoned vehicles in our area and I have already had one vehicle removed. This is an ongoing process so please keep those reports coming in! This month I am focussing on improving disabled access, especially to beaches. I have discovered that there is a “sand chair”, which is designed to move freely on the beach, available free of charge, for a small returnable deposit, at Dinosaur Isle. Reservations are made on a first-come first-served basis. Please call Trevor on 404344. Please contact me with any comments that you have on how we can improve our town to make it more accessible for everyone to enjoy. I have met with the general manager of Southern Vectis to discuss a potential rerouting to include the full length of the Broadway which could then also enable the residents of Perowne Way to access bus services more easily. It’s now possible to use a “contactless” card to pay for your bus travel, so don’t worry if you’ve run out of cash or don’t have the right fare. I’ve also had a meeting with the local neighbourhood policing team to identify any areas of concern in our town. We can all work together to make our town a safer place. If there are any specific issues that you would like me to raise with them, that will be my focus for next month.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk TOWER COTTAGE AND FALCON CROSS Thanks to all Shanklin residents and visitors that have contacted us, and other Town Councillors, to commend the quality and improved standard of both Falcon Cross and Tower Cottage Gardens Toilets, as well as the improvements made to the surrounding environments. In particular, disabled people have highlighted the improved accessibility, signage (including Braille), state of the art safety features, and a range of other amenities which has resulted in other parishes and towns on the Island coming to Shanklin for advice and guidance. These developments, supported by residents at the Public Meeting in December 2016, have been achieved in the 18 months since the IW Council closed all Shanklin Toilets, and the Town Council took on the freehold and determined to improve these community facilities for the benefit of residents, visitors and local businesses: we appreciate the tolerance and support we have had over 18 months, and we remain committed to maintain and improve all these facilities in the Town. To this end we have also increased the number of deep-cleans across all facilities, improved security (although there has been a couple of incidents that have necessitated Police involvement – the Town Council will challenge anti-social behaviour whenever and wherever it occurs in the Town), and opening extended hours when financially possible (eg both Rylstone and Chine Bluff Toilets were open during half-term, as we did last year, but something that did not happen in the past).

We will continue to update residents on further improvements and developments in future months. EVENTS AND FUTURE ACTIVITIES Continued congratulations to Anne Springman and the team at the Chine, their programme of activity to celebrate the 200th anniversary, culminating in the visit of the Duchess of Wessex, was a great success and reflected positively on all involved – meeting the Duchess was a great privilege and the feedback from residents highlighted how much demonstrates the pride that residents have in the Town, and the place the Chine has in the Community. (nb thanks for positive feedback on Decorative Lights on Esplanade, and we continue to campaign for the renovation of Spa Site with removal of scaffolding, adjacent to the £1 million renovated Lift – which we asked to remain open until Guy Fawkes night). Thanks to Shanklin Carnival, and Shanklin Rotary with several Town Councillors, for their efforts to ensure that there is a Santa Saturday in Shanklin this year – local schoolboy Adam Farley wrote to them asking for help to run an event for local children, that would also help businesses. Shanklin’s Santa Saturday is still in planning stage, but the day proposed is Saturday 9th December 2017, and the Mayor has already contacted the IW Council to ask for Free Parking on that day, as well as trying to bring forward installation of decorative lighting: the Town Council will also install trees and lighting in the Town, support the Methodist Church’s Christmas Tree event, and the Carol Concert at the Crab with

Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued the Town Brass Band (who recently enjoyed a successful competition on the mainland). Shanklin also secured the Silver Award (and best Seaside Town under 12,000 people) in South East England in Bloom, and this was further celebrated in Shanklin In Bloom – thanks again to the Royal British Legion for hosting the event, and the voluntary organisers that make this annual event possible: congratulations to Shirley Hughes whose Victoria Avenue front garden won the award for the 3rd time in 4 years, the Legion for the standard of its community garden, and all of the 40 entrants that continue to demonstrate the care and pride residents have in the appearance of the Town (and links to our support of the Biosphere initiative for the Island). We’d also like to thank the Green Town volunteers that have taken on responsibility for the walled flower bed in Tower Cottage Gardens – we know this will take some developing, but once the project develops it will complement the investment made in Tower Cottage. Tower Cottage has also been identified as a possible location of a Centenary Field, commemorating local residents that made the ultimate sacrifice in World War One – relatives of the fallen, including Adam Priest (descendant of Charles William Martin), David Yates (G H Kingswell), Andrew Hawkins (F Weeks), have signed a petition with representatives of Age Concern, Shanklin Community Library, Rotary, and other organisations in support of the proposal. This is part of the 100th Commemorative plans for the memorial, which also involves local school children planting bulbs in

honour of the fallen: this year’s Remembrance Day service will take place on Sunday 12th November at 11am, with Shanklin Town Brass Band playing a programme dedicated to those that made the ultimate sacrifice. Congratulations also to Camra and the Brewery History Society for the recent Beer & Buses weekend, and the production of a special History Walk and Guide for Shanklin – supported by the Town Council, helping promote local businesses and accommodation providers, and also highlight the heritage the town is fortunate to have and cherish. Thanks again for all of local residents and volunteers, and we continue to value all feedback. Jon Gilbey Shanklin Mayor

The autumn is an exciting time for us at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital. This is when we sit down and look at all the applications that come in from the Hospital staff who want to purchase equipment and resources to make patients’ treatment and hospital stays just that bit better. This activity is the core of what the Charity is all about. We are often asked why the NHS cannot provide these things. The answer is that the NHS must statutorily provide a level of resources to meet needs. What we are asked for is equipment that goes that bit further to improve treatment and outcomes. Think of it like buying a car. Four wheels will get you from A to B, but a better model will increase comfort and your travelling experience. We cannot provide everything that is asked for and it is sad to have to refuse funds for some very worthwhile items. But we take great care to discuss all the applications with senior hospital staff and they help us maintain a sensible perspective on what priorities we set for our deliberations. Once our decisions are made, the applicants are informed and the purchase process begins. It can take some time to get everything in and we keep a keen eye on when items are delivered so that we can go and see them in use. Examples of what we will be providing this year are special brightly coloured and safe crockery and cutlery for dementia patients and a sub epidermal moisture scanner which will assist in the reduction of the occurrence of pressure sores.

We also endeavour to provide certain items for staff - for example, last year we provided comfortable furniture for the rest rooms for the pathology lab.

This year we have provided grants to two doctor’s surgeries for equipment that will mean less hospital visits. This is convenient for patients and also relieves some pressure on St Mary’s itself. We allocated approximately £79,000 worth of grants for 2017. All this is possible because of two main things. One is the incredible generosity of Islanders who donate from putting spare coins in boxes right up to remembering us in their will. The other is the fantastic team of over 60 volunteers who run our cafes in the hospital foyer, at the Laidlaw Centre and in Ryde Health and Well Being Clinic. We also have a well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. You can help us by using these facilities as much as you can. The coffee is great and less than half the price of high street brands. All the profit after running costs goes to the Friends’ Fund so that extra cup of coffee may well help to fund something you or a loved one will feel the benefit of when receiving hospital treatment.
