November 5th is Guy Fawkes and although watching the fireworks is great fun please remember that animals aren’t keen on them. If you are holding your own event please let your neighbours know in advance so they can take the appropriate action of keeping any family pets indoors. For an amazing time without the hassle have fun at one of the many organised events happening across the island. You will find all the information on our ‘dates for your diary’ section on pages 12 and 13 which is filled with an assortment of events including Christmas fayres and winter carnivals. If you are holding a community event in December please email us the information and we will include it in next months diary section. I hope you all enjoy this months issue and I look forward to catching up with you next month with the Christmas edition. Have a great November...

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Arrangements are in place to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1, with the Remembrance Day service planned for 11am on Sunday 11th November 2018, at the War Memorial in the Old Village: Shanklin Town Brass Band will be playing from 10.15am, and the Service will be led by Rev Tony Richards, with contributions from organisations in the Town and Traci Porter will be singing Abide With Me as part of the special service. Colleagues from Shanklin’s Royal British Legion, as well as local churches, have also organised a Bay Church Service at Christ Church on Sunday 4th November, an exhibition of poems and drawings from local school children at Shanklin and Sandown Libraries, as well as other initiatives to mark the centenary and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by residents in the First World War and other conflicts. Thanks also go to Memorial Curator Terry Carpenter, and his green town colleagues, for his ongoing work to ensure the memorial and surrounding area provides a fitting backdrop for the service and, weather permitting, an area of reflection for families and individuals that have particular links to the memorials – the special seats have been appreciated by residents and tourists alike. COMMUNITY PROJECTS South East England in Bloom recognised Shanklin as the top Coastal Town, in its category, in the recent awards event, as well as receiving a specially commended Silver Award in the overall awards, which improves on the 2017 awards: thanks go to 4

Shanklin Chine, the Royal British Legion, Library, Youth Centre, St Blasius School, St Blasius Church, War Memorial, St Pauls, St Saviours, the Sacred Heart, Tower Cottage, and countless Gardens maintained by residents – the feedback from visiting judges highlighted the involvement of the community, across the generations, and the investment the Town Council has made in community projects, such as Town Square planters, maintenance of green spaces, hanging baskets, associated amenities such as the Town Clock and Public Toilets. Congratulations also go to Jo Hardy Bishop, Den Clare, Mr & Mrs Smallman for their successes in Wight in Bloom; as well as Haven Hall and Vernon Cottage for their recognition at the recent Awards Ceremony – reflecting on the efforts of residents and businesses to present a warm and welcoming environment to visitors and tourists alike. The Town Council have also discussed the next steps in the relocation of the Library, sponsorship of the Town Brass Band in the 25th Anniversary Year, development of a special community celebration in 2019 of Keats stay in Shanklin, and other initiatives, within the limited resources of the Town, at a time when the IW Council are reducing services and cutting funding, as a result of their funding situation. Shanklin Town Brass Band, in addition to 25th Anniversary Celebrations and Remembrance Day Service, are also playing at special events at St Paul’s on Saturday 8th December from 7.30pm, and on 17th continued over the page

Monthly News Report for Shanklin December at the Crab’s Carol Concert – as well as other events across the bay. Shanklin Theatre continue to offer a programme of performances including David Starkey (Sunday 4th), Robin Windsor (Tuesday 6th), The Stylistics (Thursday 8th), Dr John Cooper Clarke (Monday 12th), Pete Waterman (Thursday 15th), Simon Reeve (Wednesday 28th) and a run of ‘A Christmas Carol’ performances by the Savoyards. Thanks to all residents that have been in touch with the Town Council with issues and concerns which, hopefully, we have been able to take forward and, if possible, address – and for the contributions of the community to maintain all of the activities of the Town, given the financial challenges faced by local authorities many services would not be able to be provided without the efforts of volunteers and charitable organisations, we thank you for what you do.

Diary of a Yoga Journey Part two Yoga has slotted very easily into my life and can be fitted in around my daily routine and work life. I don’t see it as a chore and I don’t need specialist equipment or need to go to a gym or anywhere specific to practice it. The benefits I’m seeing at this early stage are all the motivation I need.

Obviously I knew the importance of breathing before, but now I understand it to a much deeper level and how I can control it and use it for a better quality of life. My teacher, Nickie Short is amazing at what she does and listens to me about problem areas in my life and can see the Island Memorials Ltd Providing A Complete Monumental Masonry Service changes I need to to the Island Community make to move forward so I can be in a better position physically and mentally. I have spoken to her about my asthma which at this time of year is not being as controlled as much as I would like, so she incorporated movements to improve lung capacity and to help me synchronise movement with breath. From previous lessons I have also used the breath awareness techniques to assist when I’m wheezy and have to use my inhaler more than normal. Nickie has taught me a variety of techniques which leave me feeling energised and I can feel my body waking up. The stretches are all working to improve mobility, release tension and bring awareness, whether it’s a pelvic tilt, shoulder rolls, the stepped breath (viloma), Kati Chakrasana or Tadasana, the palm tree pose they are all playing a vital role in my well being and self awareness. Nickie has classes happening in different areas across the island and can also offer lessons on a one to one basis. If you are interested in attending a class or discussing further call Nickie Short on 07799 032824 or visit her website www.yogaisleofwight.co.uk 9

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown The nights are drawing in and the wonderful summer that we enjoyed this year has ended, but we have the beginnings of a new era in Sandown with many residents attending town council meetings and actively engaging with the council to draw up a town plan. If you haven’t come to a town council meeting yet, please come along to the Broadway Centre on Monday November 19th at 7pm. Last month saw the official beginning of The Bay C of E School with a blessing and a plaque being unveiled by the Rev Christopher Foster, Bishop of Portsmouth. It marked the end of a long journey for staff, parents and especially the students who, by their determination, have helped to secure secondary education in Sandown to serve the wider community. We are all very excited about the positive start to the new school and it was a wonderful celebration, culminating in several students taking the opportunity to ask some very profound and insightful questions of the bishop in a Q and A session. I am delighted to be involved with the careers department on a regular basis and take a very keen interest in the personal 10

development of students to prepare them for the next stage in their journey of learning. In my role as a member of the Scrutiny Committee, I met with firefighters from Ryde Fire Station, to hear their concerns about proposals to change the shift patterns and crewing levels across the island. At the meeting at County Hall, the scrutiny committee asked that any decision to change existing arrangements be deferred until the recent inspection report from HM Inspectorate of Fire and Rescue Services has account. You can be sure that I will continue to be informed about and challenge any decisions taken that I think are flawed. I have now rolled out my parking questionnaire to all of the properties on the Yaverland Estate, from the first house to the last, and thank everyone who responded. If you haven’t received a questionnaire, you live on the estate and would like to contribute to the survey, please contact me. I will be collating all of the responses and discussing the results and possible further actions with the district steward and Councillor Ward in his role

Report from Debbie Andre continued as Cabinet member for Transport. Rest assured that no action will be taken without further consultation with residents, details of a meeting to be announced in due course. I also attended a Religious Education Conference on the island which was the first to be held on the island and a great success. We are very fortunate to have inspiring and enthusiastic representatives from a wide range of faiths and it was great to meet some of the dedicated teachers who deliver religious education in our island schools with such passion.
