The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Update By Lesley Myland You may have recently heard via various sources about the Friends’ foyer cafe moving to another location within the new outpatients department in the North Hospital. Naturally we are sad about this - we have been serving our customers in the foyer for 32 years. However, our amazing team of volunteers and staff have a very positive approach to this development. We are working hard together to ensure that the Friends’ charity will keep on functioning to support the patients and staff at St Mary’s. We plan to keep our amazing team together as far as we can. We will have a bigger shop and will still be running three cafes. Ward trolley services will still go round daily, sometimes twice daily. So there is still lots to do and we will do our best to maintain our reputation for a caring attitude and good service. In the meantime, here are some of the things we have given grants for, as always with the objective of enhancing care and staff well being. We have provided the maternity unit with 5 relaxing and reclining chairs so that partners can wait in comfort for their new babies to arrive, no matter how long it takes! We are very proud of our contribution of £1500 towards the Memory Room for dementia patients in Colwell Ward. This provides a place to relax and enjoy distraction therapies especially designed to be familiar, calming and absorbing. The room is also used by non dementia patients. Note the twiddlemuffs which were made by Friends volunteers and customers with wool kindly donated by members of the public after an appeal. We gave Children’s Speech and Language Therapy 2 iPads and a range of toys designed to help with speech, attention and listening skills which in turn help with other communication skills. As soon as we are settled in our new home in the North Hospital we hope that all our customers will still come and join us for their cuppa! That way we can continue with this support for the patients and staff at St Mary’s Hospital.

Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I don’t have much to say this month on the weather except that it’s been very wet and it feels like it’s rained for weeks!!! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this the rain will have stopped and we’ll get some nice dry crisp days. Remembrance Sunday is on the 10th of November and the month is packed with Christmas Fayres and firework/bonfire events taking place across the island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8 and 9 will keep you busy. Please remember that if you are having a firework display in your garden please let your neighbours know so they can ensure their family pets are kept safe and secure.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown It’s been another busy month! I was invited to a meeting at Brading Station where the transport minister Chris Heaton-Harris unveiled a 26 million pound investment in Island Line from Central Government. Island Line is a vital service for residents and this cash injection comes with promises to have an improved service with the introduction of an additional passing place at Brading which will mean that the service can be every half an hour. Totally refurbished trains are also promised which will give a better ride experience which I’m sure we’ll all appreciate! I attended the Extraordinary Full Council meeting that was called to challenge the decision to start on the St Mary’s roundabout roadworks. The decision to go ahead was made after securing a government grant of £9.6m for Newport transport infrastructure, on the premise of 1400 potential homes on the former Camp Hill prison site. I would have preferred a solution for Coppins Bridge roundabout to be effected first. It remains to be seen if this will aid or hinder the flow to and from Cowes and Northwood in the future. I visited the West Wight Community Centre, where they have established a very successful Timebank, to look at establishing a similar scheme in the Bay. This involves volunteers giving their time in units of hours, as and when they feel able, to help within the community. They receive “time credits” in return and can 4

use these themselves or donate them to others. Volunteers can be totally flexible as the scheme is co-ordinated and managed by a Timebank manager. A Timebank scheme has been running in the West Wight for several years and there is a more recent Timebank scheme in Newport that has come from this. Please contact me if you would like to know more about joining. I’m delighted that we have been awarded Biosphere status as an island by UNESCO. In order to gain this accreditation, we had to give evidence that our communities are connected with the environment in an environmentally sustainable way. We are blessed with a beautiful island with stunning landscapes and seascapes. We need to develop and grow, but in ways that enhance our island life. I will be promoting this ethos at every opportunity. Sandown Zoo opened their doors to the public in return for donations in a Twilight Safari event. It was wonderful to see many friends and neighbours there and to hear about the amazing rescue work that is being done through a partner agency. We even got to try out the new home for two rescued lions, Vigo and Kumba, before they take up residence! I was invited to the Isle of Wight Day Songs of Praise service at Cowes Enterprise College. There were 3 choirs and an orchestra and the music and continued over the page

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. singing were superb. It was a truly wonderful celebration of our island and the weekend’s events were a great success. Thank you to everyone who takes part in the regular beach cleans. It’s always quite shocking how many bags of rubbish are filled. We have a wonderful asset in our beautiful beach in the Bay. Let’s keep it that way.

Breakfast in the Bay It is not widely known but over 20% of school children in the Bay and Ryde areas are categorised as disadvantaged by the Government. It is also accepted that children who are not hungry perform better.

Following the success of the Ryde Cereal Project that recently launched in conjuction with Ryde Tesco Store, we have now launched Breakfast in the Bay and we hope other local areas will see the benefits and follow suit. Various drop off points are being set up around the Bay area where people can donate boxes of cereals (NOT nut ones to avoid allergy problems). Initially Sandown Central Store and Post Office in Avenue Road, The Tap pub, Gaslight Café at Sandown Station, LuLu’s café on the corner of Pier Street and the Tesco Extra store in Lake. Other locations will follow and any offers from suitable places are welcomed. Similarly, any organisations, such as churches, clubs or businesses who could organise collections of cereals or cash donations would be a great help to get the project off to a flying start. At present 6 schools in the Bay area are participating and it is hoped to commence distributing cereals to some schools from the beginning of November. Plans for the future are not just to cover cereals, as schools have other needs too for these pupils. This will involve fund raising and this is currently in hand, with further announcements in the near future. If you have any enquiries or offers of help please e-mail sandownca@gmail.com

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 PROPOSED DESIGNS FOR PIER STREET TOILETS – SANDOWN - I’m pleased to show the proposed design for the new toilets intended to replace the dilapidated ones in Pier Street. The design is due to be presented to Planning at the end of the year and once approved work can start. One significant change from the previous proposal is to move the toilets out of the main building and position them in a stand-alone block to the left-hand side of the main building. These will be built first to ensure that public toilets are available for the summer season. The main building can accommodate two or three separate commercial units depending upon what the potential occupants may want to establish. Interest has already been expressed by businesses. There will be a fairly large apron in front of the building which can be used as an entertainment area if required.

LITTER PICKING WITH SANDOWN’S GREEN TOWNS VOLUNTEERS - During October I joined Sandown’s Green Town Volunteers on a couple of Saturdays to help keep our town looking clean and tidy. I have the greatest respect for our volunteers, and it is heartening to see that there are residents who are prepared to give up their time for us. On the last session I attended we did the Foxes Path/Bridge/Lane area of the 10

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward continued Perowne Way Estate. We collected over 20 bags of litter from hedgerows, verges and pathways. Items included a packed suitcase, a scooter, part of a bike frame and huge amounts of bottles, cans and general litter. Good to see that the litter bin I got installed outside of the Perowne Way shop was being well used to keep down the litter around that area. SANDOWN COMMUNITY KIDS PRESENTATION AT BAY SCHOOL ASSEMBLY - It was great to be invited to attend a special school assembly at the Bay School on 4 October to present a banner to the Community Kids. Christine Jackson of our Green Town Volunteers also presented them with awards to thank them for their help in preparing Sandown for the Sandown in Bloom event earlier this summer. Well done Community Kids and Green Town Volunteers!
