If you are a dog owner you’ll be pleased to know that from the 1st October our little furry four legged friends can once again play on the beaches that were out of bounds to them during the summer season. I know my own little dog Alfie, will be excited by this news.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown This month has been an eventful one in Sandown, both in the world of local government and in the town itself. This month will see yet another local council election in Sandown South, following the resignation of Eric Lawson. There seems to be a trend developing within our local council that the opinions of some councillors aren’t welcome, especially when they’re expressed during public meetings. The current complaints process under the councillor Code of Conduct rules if ineffectual and sanctions are rarely, if ever, applied. This lack of accountability allows political cliques to form within councils that control decision making and alienate other councillors. However, those councillors who have a passion and determination to represent their residents irrespective of party politics and to serve the common good are much needed and in short supply in Sandown. It takes a strong and determined person to stay the course of 4 years or more. By the time you read this, there will be a new town councillor serving Sandown. Let us hope that they will uphold their position with integrity, honesty and determination to work together for a positive future for Sandown. The fire at the Tarvic 2 Hotel saw an operation of some magnitude, bringing together the fire services of both the IOW and Hampshire and the ambulance and paramedic services, as well as the IOW Council emergency planning team. It also showcased the Sandown business community at its most compassionate, with local businesses supplying a constant stream of refreshments for the firefighters and operational command teams. I spent several
hours with the teams and was able to speak to some of the firefighters to understand their role better and to gain an insight into how they feel a combined fire service would affect the effectiveness of the fire service provision on our island. I was especially keen to speak with them prior to the fire service review paper coming back to the scrutiny committee this month. As promised, I have now rolled out my parking questionnaire to the whole of the Yaverland Estate. I’m very grateful to all of the residents who have come back to me with their responses so far. At the end of this month I will be collating all of the responses and will call a further meeting of residents to discuss the findings and the possible options that can be considered. I will be looking at the estate as a whole so rest assured that we will be looking carefully at the impact that any measures introduced will have on neighbouring roads. I will also be looking at other areas in my ward where residents’ parking is an issue. The questionnaire that I have drawn up in conjunction with Island Roads may be used in other areas around the island. If you would like to meet with me, either as a group, or to discuss a personal matter, please contact me by any of the methods given. Also, please remember that Councillor Heather Humby runs her “Sandown Surgery” every Thursday afternoon between 3pm and 4pm at Sandown Library. Heather has served Sandown residents faithfully for over 40 years, is a font of knowledge and would be happy to discuss any Sandown matter with you. No appointment needed, just turn up.

Call 01983 216121 This month our front cover star has got me or asking the question ‘are you running to, or 07590 277298 from somewhere’!!?? For all your external cleaning needs... This particular hare was caught mid stride by Soft Washing & Pressure Washing of local photographer Nick Edwards. Many of Render, Roofs, Driveways, Gutters, you will already be aware of Nick’s work and the dedication he has towards photographing Cladding, Awnings, Patios and local hares, initially to provide data for virtually any other external surface. surveys being conducted by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. It has now spread beyond our Island’s shores and Nick’s photos of hares are appealing to a wide audience, appearing in several national publications and calendars. You will find him out at dawn and dusk on an almost daily basis patiently awaiting the close approach of his popular photographic subject. Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www. wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport. All of Nick’s photographs are amazing but I am particularly drawn to his hares as there is something captivating and mystical about them. We were lucky enough to feature one of his pictures on the front cover of the October issue last year too... I can’t wait to see what he will pull out the bag for next year. Keep watching this space.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Autumnal weather has arrived and thoughts are turning to the seasonal programme of activities, after a very warm and busy summer – with several local groups celebrating anniversaries, and new groups working on new projects. Shanklin Theatre are celebrating their 10th Anniversary with an evening of dance, humour and song on Tuesday 10th October 2018 at the Theatre; we were fortunate to have been involved from the start, from arranging public meetings to ensure the survival of this much loved amenity, to supporting fundraising events and continuing to see the continually expanding programme of entertainment that is on offer. This month sees Joan Armatrading (4/10), Russian State Opera with Carmen (8/10), Arsenal Legends (9/10), Andy Fairweather Low (13/10), as well as Albert Lee Band and Ronnie Scott’s All Stars: all this is due to the work of Vic, Louise, Chris and Roger, and the team of dedicated volunteers and helpers that give up time and energy to make to venue the success that it is , and attract the range and quality of acts and activities that it does. Congratulations are also sent to Malcolm and Karen, and all involved in Shanklin Town Brass Band (based at Rylstone, in Shanklin Old Village), on the 25th Anniversary of the Band, and they have a special concert on Saturday 13th October at the United Reformed Church – many of us have had the privilege of knowing and supporting the Band from the start, as well as witness the development of young talent and the annual provision of a performance programme 10
which is the envy of many seaside resorts. In addition to the 50+ performances managed or played by the Band in the Summer, the weekly practise nights for established musicians and learners, the Band are central to the Christmas Carol Concerts in Shanklin (and other Island locations), and the 11th November Remembrance Day Service. We were fortunate to support the nomination of both the Theatre and Town Band for the receipt of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, and wish them continued success into the future – they are a credit to all that is positive about Shanklin. COMMUNITY PROJECTS - Plastic Free Shanklin has been set up to reduce the use of Single Use Plastics around the town and achieve the Surfers Against Sewage ‘Plastic Free Community’ status. The group has already welcomed plastic free allies of all kinds of business. There is plenty more room for businesses, community groups and they are also looking for supporters for equipment and sponsors. To find out how you can get your business or community group involved, get ideas on how to reduce your own plastic use or just find out more about the initiative, you can find them on Facebook – Plastic Free Shanklin or email plasticfreeshanklin@ gmail.com Plans are already in place to mark the Centenary of the end of World War 1 with a special church service in the Bay, in addition to the regular programme of services; continued over the page
Monthly News Report for Shanklin special bulb planting events with local primary schools; and other activities supported by the Royal British Legion and other partner organisations: we have also been awarded, with St Paul’s Church, 10 commemorative silhouettes which will also highlight the Centenary and provide an opportunity for the community to reflect on the sacrifices that were made by residents of Shanklin in the past. Also, residents may like to know that over 50,000 residents and visitors have now used the ‘new’ public toilets in Falcon Cross and Tower Cottage – and South East England in Bloom have awarded Shanklin a major award (more in next edition).

Diary of a Yoga Journey I’ve started on a journey... I’ve been wanting to take this journey for years and I am always mumbling my favourite mantra ‘I really want to learn yoga’. I have been suffering from back pain, I’m not alone in this common complaint but something changed this day and I finally pulled my finger out and have done something about it – I did some research, I asked around, and then I made the phone call to a friend of a friend who is a yoga teacher and there ladies and gentleman is how I have taken the first steps on my journey. We have discussed what I want from yoga, how I envisage it fitting in my life, my goals and much more. I have opted for one to one lessons and this is down to my own personal preference as I don’t feel ready to attend a class with others just yet, but never say never!
My instructor Nickie Short is going to be by my side every step of the way and already I have learnt some new tools to help me manage and deal with everyday stresses. I have so far Contact Lui Tel: 520522 experienced how to connect and encourage Mob: 07795 363 534 my body to relax whilst being aware of my breathing and learning how to control it for www.primotechnical.co.uk a better quality of breath. Simple stretches primotechnical@gmail.com for the lower back and learning how to synchronise breath and movement will help me with the back pain. We also covered awareness of posture and how being aware of my feet and waking them up can improve posture and balance. I feel my first lesson has gone really well and Nickie has sent me notes with instructions of everything we covered so I can carry on the good work at home. Already I am counting down the days until our next meeting. If I remind you of yourself then please do as I have done and take the first step. It seems more daunting than it really is.
