Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of Island Magazines. We are now into the autumn months and no doubt like many you have been busy packing away the summer wardrobe and unpacking boots, jumpers and coats in preparation of the crisp mornings that will soon be upon us. Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year and we are very lucky living here with the countryside on our doorstep and amazing scenery that changes with each season. For dog owners its great news as it means our furry little friends are now allowed to play on all the beaches around the island. Halloween is at the end of the month and although the island is slowing down after summer there are still events happening and you can find our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 14 and 15.

Early Detection Gives You a Fighting Chance One man dies every 45 minutes (around 11,800 men every year) from prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men but statistics show that if caught in the early stages, treatment is 80% effective. Mention the words Prostate Cancer and PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) Testing and most men will immediately conjure up an invasive and embarrassing testing procedure but in reality it is a simple blood test that is pain free and takes less than 5 minutes This simple BLOOD TEST measures the amount of antigen produced by the prostate entering the blood. It is not a diagnostic/direct test for cancer, but gives an indicator of the health of the prostate. Regular testing showing an increasing reading can indicate a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Unfortunately despite the increasing number of prostate cancer diagnosis and mortality, there is not a regular screening test, and some GP’s are reluctant to offer a PSA test to men over 50 years. Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed General symptoms with prostate cancer each year. of problems with

It could be an urinate especially infection, enlargement or cancer. 15% will develop at night, bursting to prostate cancer and those with family history of the urinate, slow flow, disease or of African-Caribbean origin are 3 times difficult or painful (45%) more at risk but the main thing to think about flow, stop/start is that early detection gives you an above average fighting chance!!! dribbling, or blood in the urine The Charity Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group in partnership with Ryde Lions are offering FREE PSA blood testing for men aged 45 to 85 years on 19th October at Ryde Academy, Pell Lane, Ryde, PO33 3LN The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm, this will be analysed at a hospital laboratory and after a report has been produced by a Urological Consultant, the result will be sent to the person being tested within 7 – 10 working days. Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 GOVERNMENT HOUSING TARGETS – TOO MANY FOR OUR ISLAND? A number of Sandown residents gathered to hear our MP Bob Seely talk about the IW Council’s emerging planning policy document called the Island Plan. Principally, Bob is concerned that the governments diktat for us to build 9000 homes during the next 15 years is far beyond the needs of our Island community. The audience listened intently to his concerns and Bob’s suggested alternatives. He felt that the IW Council should lead on the rejection of the governments figures and show that the Island needs fewer homes which must be targeted to young Islanders struggling to find and afford a home. There was clear acceptance of Bob’s proposals; I explained the IW Council shared Bob’s concerns but I stressed it was the government that was dictating the numbers, not the IW Council; it’s clear we both need to work together to try and get these numbers reduced. ACTION ON ANOTHER EYESORE - FITZROY STREET/STATION AVENUE Just to let you know the IW Council is in negotiation with the owner of the property at Fitzroy Street/Station Avenue asking why he had not responded to any of the interested parties that had been organised to help him bring his property back into use. The owners have been informed that they need to have something concrete in place by the end of October or the IW Council will continue with the Compulsory Purchase Order process. Afternote: The IW Council has received confirmation that a National development company has met with the owner and they are endeavouring to assist him.

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward continued WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SUMMER? – IT JUST FLASHED PAST! While our tourism industry moved into top gear for the summer season, other bodies like the IW Council and Town & Parish Councils traditionally reduce the tempo of business because councillors and staff take their holidays etc. Well, I counted how many meeting or related events I attended during the July and August slowdown and was surprised to find that they totalled 97 over 46 working days, which is just over two per Do you want to make some changes in your life? Of course, I helped at the Sandown Regatta and both Sandown Carnivals collecting donations, but I did some judging for the Illuminated Carnival and was very impressed by our Green Town Volunteers who came First in their category. Getting Yourself Back on Your Feet Have you ever thought about how hard your feet work for you? Yet many of us neglect them and underestimate how important they are... in many cases they go the extra mile but along the way certain issues can crop up such as ingrowing toenails, corns, hard skin, verrucas and fungal infections, to name a few. It may be that through medical issues such as diabetes and the fact that none of us are getting any younger, even simple tasks such as nail trimming and cracked heels can become difficult to take care of and that is why you should always seek the help of a professional, and Steven Long not only ticks this box but he also offers a mobile service so all treatments can be carried out in the comfort of your own home, whilst relaxing in your own armchair. Steven is always happy to discuss your requirements and welcomes you to call him on 721987 or 07799 334900 to discuss how he can help you and make your life that little bit easier. 9

Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre, is planning a special Halloween Night event – a traditional feature of the Centre and more details available on their website. TOWN ACTIVITIES The Town Council continue to highlight residents concerns following sewerage issues over the Bank Holiday weekend, resulting in amenities being affected at a peak time; ongoing issues resulting in the closure of the Lift during the holiday season (with Osbourne Steps also being closed) also had significant impact on Tourism; and the ongoing issue of Bathing Water quality remains unresolved – it is hoped there will be a local debate on these and other issues in the near future. Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown When you read this, the nights will be drawing in and Autumn will be well on its way. My attention is drawn, especially at this time, to those within our community who are struggling to make ends meet. I recently became aware of a wonderful person within our community who has managed to get an agreement with local supermarkets to collect best before produce that would otherwise go to landfill, as long as it can be distributed on the same day. As you can imagine, the amount of food, etc. that is collected varies each time, but could still make a big difference. This is an opportunity for us to come together as a community and make sure that these collections get to as many of our residents in need as possible. If you know of anyone who would benefit from this, please let me know, in confidence, after checking with that person, so that I can coordinate. For the first time, we will have a longer half term holiday of two weeks for our Local Authority run schools in October. I would be interested to hear your feedback as to whether you feel this is a good thing or not. This will affect not only the pupils themselves, but parents, grandparents, teachers, businesses, etc. All comments welcomed. Premier Inn now seems to be taking shape and the work progressing well. However, our seafront, which has so much potential, still seems to be blighted by dilapidation and building sites. I am in regular contact with council officers to ensure that everything that can be done is being done to let developers know that they have a responsibility to at least ensure that

building sites are safe and that they are required by law to comply with planning and building regulations. I have also met with owners recently, as promised, to discuss timescales for works to commence. This is an ongoing process, but I will keep challenging on your behalf until we see improvement and redevelopment of those sites which are detrimental to our town. We now have an “integrated health hub” at the Sandown Medical Centre where we have joined with Shanklin Medical Centre. Please let me know if the system is working for you? Also, please contact me if there are any issues with local health care that you would like me to take up on your behalf? There are many changes taking place in our island health services and, with your support, we can ensure that our local health services are fit for purpose and that funding is allocated to the right departments. As always, I am grateful to all residents who regularly alert me of issues that need my attention. I am here to serve you, my residents. Please continue to contact me, your support is greatly valued. Don’t forget Councillor Heather Humby’s councillor surgery at Sandown Library every Saturday from 11am – 12pm. I’m aware that not everyone is online and I want to be available to you to hear your concerns. In any event, please feel free to contact me using the details above, or Cllr Humby on 402024 or heatherhumby@ sandowntowncouncil.gov.uk

A Game of Conkers Autumn is coming and if you are of a certain age you will probably remember scrabbling around on your hands and knees underneath a horse chestnut tree looking for the biggest and baddest conkers which would knock your opponents to pieces!! Back in the day a game of conkers was a healthy playground activity in which you pitched yourself against another person and take turns hitting each other’s conker with your own. One player lets theirs dangle on the full length of the string while the other player swings and hits. To prepare your conker for battle a hole had to be drilled or made in the middle and a piece of string or shoelace was threaded through with a large knot at one end to secure in place. Yes I admit it could get a little rough at times especially if you were unlucky enough to receive a whack on the knuckles. It does take you by surprise and gives a sting but it certainly was never life threatening and it is such a shame that this tradition has faded out over time and is no longer found in the playground. Of course everyone wanted to win so those that were really competitive weren’t afraid to cheat by making their conker as hard as a rock. I was never involved in this type of skulduggery but I understand

that some people baked them in the oven or put them in vinegar and apparently if you keep them for a year they naturally harden. I like to think back on my memories and remember that if ever I did win a game it was through skill and determination and nothing else!!! The first recorded game of conkers using horse chestnuts was on the Isle of Wight in 1848. There is uncertainty of the origins of the name. The name may come from the dialect word conker, meaning “knock out” (perhaps related to French conque meaning a conch, as the game was originally played using snail shells and small bits of string) The name may also be influenced by the verb conquer, as earlier games involving shells and hazelnuts have also been called conquerors. In 1965 the World Conker Championships were set up in Ashton (near Oundle) Northamptonshire, England, and still take place on the second Sunday of October every year. In 2004, an audience of 5,000 turned up to watch more than 500 competitors from all over the world. The 2016 Championship was featured on the BBC programme “Countryfile”. Apparently on finding your first conker of the season, you should say “oddly oddly onker my first conker”. This ensures good fortune and few tangles throughout the coming season.

A professional, caring service in your own home.

I believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues represented properly to government by putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I would vote for the needs of our Island People, be transparent, inclusive and community focused.

I believe that our Health & Wellbeing comes first and that Education can be used to bring change, positivity, employment and reward. We need more NHS and Teaching staff to reduce waiting times and raise education standards. I believe that our island is changing for the better and that we continue to work together within communities to change attitudes, support one another and create our own destinies. Regeneration is not just about building houses it’s about creating better employment opportunities, family choices, mental health and environment matters and it requires improved investment.
