One client said: “Maggie intuitively knew that the path I was on wasn’t the way I truly wanted to go. She allowed me to see that my passions were elsewhere and opened my mind to the possibilities ahead of me. I changed my path and have never looked back. Maggie was totally right.” There is no such thing as a FREE seminar. There are many ‘coaches’ out there who will try and sell you their latest programme which is allegedly for your benefit. A lot of these people are actors and accomplished sales people. Rest assured Maggie is none of those things. When you work with her you will learn how to live life like you, with more freedom, more fun and less stress. Get in touch hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk

Another month has passed, and our summer was extended with some beautiful sunny days in September. As I write this the sun is still shining but there is now a definite nip in the air both early in the morning and late in the evening showing us that Autumn is here. Autumn is a great season and I always use the time to have a good clear out when putting away the summer clothes and bringing out jumpers and boots. The island is a great place for autumnal walks, and we get to see the countryside change with the season. This is also the time of year when you need to give yourself a health check to get you through the next few months. As well as Covid hanging around, now is also the time when colds, coughs and flu viruses are looking for their next victims. On page 8 you will find some top tips on how you can help yourself and boost your immune system from local Nutritionist Michele Newton. Inside you will find the regular news reports and some interesting feature articles and advertisers. On pages 12 and 13 you will find the puzzle section, which is great for keeping your brain active especially while the nights are drawing in. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I hope you all keep safe and well and I look forward to catching up with you again next month and in the meantime if you have any news you would like to share please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown As I write this, we are still living in these strange times with the threat of a “second spike” hanging over us. People will be affected in different ways and some cope better than others when presented with challenges. It’s fair to say that the challenges that we currently face, whatever our personal circumstances, will inevitably have prompted us to “take stock” and reevaluate. My desire to enter the world of local government came from my involvement in the community and membership of different community organisations and my frustration with the seeming ineptitude of a system that, to my mind, seemed to be inward looking and entrenched in the past. Ironically, as we have seen in recent months, our treasured heritage is not valued by our political custodians in the same way that, as residents we recognise the intrinsic and social value of our heritage rather than just sticking a price tag on it. There just isn’t the vision and joined up thinking that we need to preserve our heritage whilst adding to its overall worth by investing the necessary capital to restore these assets to be relevant for the demand of today’s residents and visitors. The Isle of Wight Council commissioned a regeneration vision, number 11 or so to date, but this time, done by the excellent team at ERMC, a company based in Newport. This was consulted on locally in effect as a kind of ‘town plan’ through a weekend event with a display at the Broadway Centre and the opportunity for 4

residents to discuss and comment on the ideas put forward. This plan seems to have fallen flat since the public consultation in January 2019. To my knowledge, none of the current discussion around Brown’s is put into its context, which really suggests that we have reverted to the former approach of looking at each project in isolation with a total lack of vision and purpose and without looking to the future to create a cohesive, integrated offer that both respects, celebrates and improves our beloved Sandown and boosts our economy, both locally and on the island as a whole. The lack of corporate vision is simply staggering and there is a worrying perception that the IOW council, who, after all, are meant to be the custodians of our public spaces and community assets, will just roll over for whatever private interest offers the most regardless of the loss of free public realm and community value. There is literally nothing to be gained by selling off free public space and allowing a private interest to take what money might be available to the local economy and send it all offshore instead. The thing that is never spoken about is that Yaverland/Brown’s is already attracting high numbers of visitors. If you add Brown’s, Dinosaur Isle, Hullabaloo and Discovery Bay you get around 200K visitors a year. We should be knitting this resource together properly, creating a coherent visitor destination and plugging into the economy of the High Street and the everyday experiences and continued over the page

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. continued opportunities of us residents, the people who live here and make up our vibrant community. That requires imagination and public investment. Sandown Town Council, via its own precepts and Section106 monies due from some of the recent developments, could be and should be making those investments, in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council, but for this to happen, we need to put our politics to one side and all work towards that common purpose. I will remain Independent for that very reason.

weekly Councillor Surgery every Saturday from 11am until midday when the restrictions are lifted. She is still available on 402024 or at heatherhumby@ sandowntowncouncil.gov.uk I am once again holding my monthly Councillor surgeries on the first Saturday of each month at Yaverland Sailing Club, from 11am until midday, at the outside area, to enable social distancing. I’m happy to hold surgeries more frequently if residents feel that would be of value? I’m grateful for the support of you, my residents. Please continue to contact me with your issues. What matters to you, matters to me.

At a local government level, whatever challenges we are facing due to the current pandemic, it should not be used as an argument for lack of progress on regeneration or for there being currently no discussion, master-planning, or design thinking to achieve and deliver the best possible outcome for the town, with the HYPNOTHERAPY discussions taking place outside of the public domain with “development partners” The Island’s leading Hypnotherapist whose main priority is maximising their celebrating 40 years. It’s Good to Have Them Back… It’s great to see the re-opening of The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Shop. This wonderful community venture touches the lives of many. All the money they raise through the dedicated work of their volunteers is ploughed back into the hospital, buying vital equipment for patients and professionals. It’s been a tough year so far for the Friends, not just with Covid-19 but at the beginning of the year they were relocated from their prime position and had to basically start again. They may have been dealt a blow, but they have bounced back with even more determination. Their new shop is just past reception on the ground floor and not far from the main entrance to the Hospital. Over the years they have raised over £1.5 million and they want to keep building on this and desperately need your help. Please support them by using the shop at the hospital which is stocked full of goodies to tempt you - gifts, cards, news and snacks. They have not been able to re-open their cafes in outpatients, the Ryde Wellbeing Clinic and the Laidlaw Centre as Covid-19 has made this impossible for now. Their ward trolley service which also brought a smile to patients faces has also ceased operating and this has impacted hard on everyone. The staff and volunteers always remain positive and they hope that some time in the future they will be serving you tea and coffee again. They look forward to welcoming you into the shop and please support where you can. You can also donate via the many collection boxes across the island. They have supported St Mary’s staff and patients for 32 years now and with your help they can keep on doing that for another 32!

Local business Four Seasons Cooking Academy is owned by nutritionist and food safety specialist Michele Newton and she has some wise words for us all… “The colder months are approaching and now is the time to get your immune system fired up to help you beat any seasonal viruses that will be lurking around and to give you a fighting chance to keep yourself healthy and ready to fight whatever is thrown at you” Michele has kindly put together a few immune boosting foods and health tips to get us going. You can find more information on the Four Seasons Cookery Academy Facebook page. Tip 1. Jumbo Oats topped with Berries and a small drizzling of local Honey will keep blood sugars stable for hours. Tip 2. Please, please take a supplement from now until March at least. Even more important now. Go for a top strength tablet or spray. Many of us are low in Vitamin D, even with the lovely weather we’ve enjoyed. Tip 3. At the first sign of a cold/sore throat, make our tried & tested ‘potion’. 1/2 tsp Turmeric mixed into a paste with half a squeezed lemon and a drizzle of (preferably local) honey. Add enough hot water to make a ‘shot’ and down the hatch! Take 3 shots per day. Tip 4. Sweet potatoes contain your full daily need of Vitamin A and a third of your vitamin C requirements. Delicious baked, they will also keep your blood sugars stable. Tip 5. Garlic not only strengthens the immune system, but also has antibacterial properties. Tip 6. Vitamin C is essential for a strong immune system. Our body doesn’t store or produce it so include a variety of items daily, such as oranges and orange juice, peppers, kiwi fruit, broccoli, blackcurrants, strawberries and bananas. Tip 7. Green tea - rich in antioxidants - substances that can slow - or prevent - damage to our cells. Try to have 2 cups a day. The mint flavoured one is lovely. Tip 8. Dark Chocolate (+70%) is superb for our immune system. It contains iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium - alongside being a powerful antioxidant. Melt a few squares into hot milk to make a delicious - and nutritious - hot chocolate. Tip 9. Kiwi fruit has a packed list of nutrients. Exciting studies are starting to show that 5 per week can reduce asthma induced wheezing. Wow! Tip 10. WELLBEING...... we have all been sorely ‘tested’ this year and this lowers our immune systems for sure. Talk to family/friends about how you’re feeling; exercise and try to take each day as it comes. 8

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Dear Resident We’d like to thank all residents and visitors for following the Covid-19 guidance, especially in Public Spaces, and for local businesses for taking the necessary measures to adhere to the guidance as it evolves – the Town Council has provided additional signage and cleaning at all of its Public Conveniences, as well as introduce a new system at the recently opened Community Library at Falcon Cross. Thanks to Maria and the team of volunteers for providing a Covid Safe service at the new Library – while the team are still getting used to new surroundings and the additional Covid guidance, those using the new amenity have commented on how much more convenient the new location is. Hopefully, subject to changing guidance, there will be a couple of special events to mark National Libraries Week this month – with numbers limited and new restrictions in place, each event will follow the appropriate guidelines. Also, work continues on the new Town Office – the foundation work has been completed and the roof in place, and it is hoped to finish the project in the next couple of months and a new central location established for the Town. Shanklin is celebrating another success in the National Public Conveniences Awards, with special recognition for the Toilets at Falcon Cross and Tower Cottage,

reflecting the investment made by the Town Council following extensive public consultation – recent investment in Hope Road Toilets has also received positive public feedback, especially during the pandemic, when special cleaning regimes were put in place. South East England in Bloom has also awarded the Town a Silver Gilt award in its category, reflecting the efforts of Green Town Volunteers, other voluntary groups, with the Town and County Council, to make Shanklin the Town it is – positive comments were received about the quality of the hanging baskets and floral displays, the War Memorial and Tower Cottage, Rylstone, the natural landscape of Big Mead, and the number of trees along many roads. Guidance is being sought regarding the nature of this year’s Remembrance Day events, as it is unlikely that crowds will be permitted under the new guidance – it is likely that personal wreath laying will be permitted, in order to ensure the safety of the Public: work is in hand to ensure an appropriate remembrance for November, and further details will be in next edition. As highlighted in the previous edition, many local churches have been able to open their doors again and arrange weekend services, and they are working on arrangements for Christmas, within the rules and ensuring the safety of all wishing to participate – and many continue to provide online access. continued over the page

Monthly News Report for Shanklin Many local voluntary groups, such as Shanklin Town Brass Band, have been able to make their facilities Covid secure and start practicing again, albeit with limited numbers and constantly reviewing arrangements – the IW Council has provided extensive online guidance as to how to implement Covid safe rules, which can be accessed on their website.

Celebrations of Life Funerals, Memorial Services, Interment of Ashes, Celebrations of Life. Wedding Ceremonies, Renewal of Vows, Baby Naming, Milestone Celebrations.

Let me help you create a loving, fitting ceremony for your own personal requirements. Please contact me to discuss, and I very much look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks to all local businesses that have gone the extra mile to re-open in recent months, and trying to provide the best service possible under challenging circumstances to visitors and residents alike – the number of positive comments reflects the efforts that have been made, as well as the care and attention given. We’d finally like to thank all the residents for getting in touch with issues, concerns and comments – they are appreciated and help inform all of the actions being taken.
