Welcome and thank you for picking up the latest issue of Island Magazines. We have had some glorious sunshine and quite a heatwave so far this summer but at the time of writing this it’s raining... and although I’m not keen on rain it was very much needed, but let’s hope the sun will be back shortly. The summer holidays seem to have flown by and the Island has been packed with visitors enjoying all the wonderful delights our rock has to offer. It never ceases to amaze me when I come across visitors who seem in awe of the fact that we live here and have everything the Island has to offer right under our noses. It’s comments like this that make me glad to call this home. As usual this issue is packed with local news, features, advertisers and much more and you can find details of events happening throughout September by going to the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11. I hope you all enjoy this issue and always feel free to get in touch and share your thoughts. Until next month...

Slimming World launches new plan to help slimmers in Shanklin stay slim for life A weight-loss expert from Shanklin is excited to help even more people lose weight and keep it off for life thanks to a new initiative to support slimmers who’ve reached their target weight. As part of a campaign to build in additional support for members who reach their personal target weight, Slimming World conducted a survey that found slimmers are more than twice as likely to describe losing weight as ‘easy’ compared to maintaining weight. Julie, who runs the Shanklin Slimming World group, says people who find maintaining weight loss challenging aren’t alone. Slimming World’s new initiative for target members addresses all of these challenges and aims to help make weight loss maintenance easier. It includes a new Slim for Life plan to help target members to adapt their diet to maintain weight rather than continue to lose. The plan, is designed to be personalised by slimmers, gives members the option of three routes depending on their rate of weight loss and introduces members to the concept of Savvy Syns which are a healthier or safer choice than other high-calorie and high-fat options because they provide beneficial nutrients. Members are encouraged and supported to make their own choices and a more flexible approach once they’ve achieved their personal target weight. Julie, who supports people to lose weight each week, says: “When members start their weight-loss journey, it can be difficult for them to think too far ahead. They’re so focused on losing the weight that they find it difficult to even think about how they’re going to keep it off. This new guidance will really help our members to understand the importance of having the right mindset and behaviours from the very beginning of their journey, so that they can develop sustainable healthy habits and truly make a change for life.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Following a good summer to date, we would like to thank all individuals and groups involved in organising events and activities for residents and visitors alike – the programme that has been put on has engaged and entertained thousands of spectators, and ensured Shanklin continues to promote affordable and accessible activities for all. We also thank all those that have been in touch regarding the re-chiming of the Town Clock, and the restoration work undertaken by the United Reformed Church – whilst not an easy exercise, the final outcome has more than justified the dogged determination of those committed to the project. In addition to supporting the restoration of the Town Clock (damaged during bombing raids in World War 2), the Town Council, with Lake and Sandown Councils, are supporting a range of projects to commemorate the Centenary of the end of World War 1; and will be working with local Primary Schools and students to honour the memories of all that made the ultimate sacrifice in both World Wars and other conflicts. With Rev Williams, at St Paul’s Church, we have secured a grant for 10 commemorative silhouettes to be used in the range of commemorative activities being planned with the local British Legion and other organisations. SHANKLIN NEWS AND EVENTS Rylstone Gardens host the band concerts on Sunday 2nd and 9th (Town Brass Band), and on Wednesday 5th (Sandown & Shanklin 8
Military) – volunteers from the Band continue the restoration of the iconic chalet, and are preparing for the winter programme of performances leading up to the Christmas period. Shanklin Theatre’s September programme includes Beyond The West End (Thursdays – and some Wednesdays), as well as shows featuring Ross Noble, Jimmy Osmond, Lucy Worsley, and well as preparation leading up to the 10th Anniversary Celebrations – those of us involved in the early days of the re-birth of the Theatre cannot understate the contribution made by countless volunteers and partner organisations to secure the future of this historic amenity and attract the quality of events that has been achieved. Shanklin also welcomes Rev. Jonathan Hall to St Blasius Church (and St John’s Sandown), and following the recent licensing events, hope he is settling into the Town. Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre, including Friday night’s TC’s for younger people, are re-opening this month and welcome new and old members, and have invested in upgrades during the summer – including renovated front door, restored to original condition. The recent ‘Growing Up In Shanklin’ DVD, capturing memories of residents and key moments in the life of the Town, will be available to borrow from the Community Library – which will also be displaying plans for its new home (in Falcon Cross Road), continued over the page
Monthly News Report for Shanklin planned for completion in the Spring of 2019 (with office and other amenities). Following the 150th Anniversary and celebration of American Poet Longfellow’s visit to Shanklin in 1868, the Town Council will be discussing the reintroduction of the water fountain, refreshing the poem plaque, and supporting reusing water bottles (especially during future hot spells) – more on this in future magazines. THANKS Thanks also go to all local emergency services – the exceptional hot weather has meant that the summer has been a really busy period for all uniformed services and personnel, and the community are grateful for their efforts for residents and visitors. Also, we hope the results of South East England In Bloom will be received and the Position of best Coastal Town maintained, together with other recognition, reflecting on the efforts of the community to provide a warm and welcoming environment – including for all involved in the forthcoming Beer and Buses weekend.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown As you read this, for many of you, the summer season will be over and it will be back to “business as usual”. I have been able to enjoy the unusually hot summer weather with less meetings scheduled, but have welcomed the opportunity to be able to spend even more time than usual out and about in my ward. I have had various meetings with residents and have been able to help to resolve issues more quickly through highlighting individual cases with the appropriate departments. It’s this aspect of my role as your councillor that I find incredibly rewarding and value the most and the main reason why I stood for election. If you have an issue that you would like me to help with, please contact me to arrange a time to meet. Those of you who know me, know how passionate I am about community involvement. I have had a wonderful carnival season this year and have very much enjoyed being a part of an island tradition that provides a great spectacle for both residents and tourists and helps to provide much needed funds for many local charities. Sandown Carnival Association welcomes new members, especially volunteers for the Carnival shop, even if it’s only for a couple of hours a week.
delighted to have been asked to serve as a careers governor for the newly formed school. I am confident that the leadership team and governing body of the new school, which has already been so successful as The Bay Primary C of E School, will ensure that a first class education is offered to our students. This month will see the build for Premier Inn start in earnest. It’s no secret that there have been some unanticipated hurdles to overcome, but Premier Inn have always remained 100% committed to the project and have worked hard to find solutions that will resolve all of these issues so that the 100 bed roomed hotel can be built. I have now had two site visits with the project management team and am working hard to establish a good working relationship which will benefit the town when the build is complete. In maintaining the confidence of Premier Inn, I hope to show other potential investors that Sandown is well and truly “open for business”.
