Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe we are here already as it only feels like a couple of weeks ago that summer started. We have some beautiful landscapes on the Island and there’s nothing better than a field of hay bales, wheat or sweetcorn. Just travel less than five minutes from any town centre and you will be in the midst of the countryside with fields of all varying colours and crops. No doubt like me you have noticed the tractors, trailers and balers out in force going backwards and forwards at all hours of the day while they frantically work to harvest the crops. I’ve always had a keen liking for tractors so I don’t mind coming across them on the roads. I always add extra time to my journey at this time of the year and rather than stress I can relax and enjoy the views over some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. This month we are giving a BIG shout out on behalf of Feline Welfare and some of their residents who are looking for their forever homes. Read more about them on page 4. I hope you all have a great September and enjoy the last few weeks of summer...

Feline Welfare Isle of Wight
Registered Charity: 1084722
Feline Welfare have lots of adorable guests staying with them and all these gorgeous cats are looking for love and a place to call home. They range from 12 weeks up to 13 years of age and they all deserve safe, genuine homes with people who REALLY care. Some have had a sad start to their lives so will need time, patience and understanding, but even those who are timid initially learn to trust you and will be WONDERFUL pets. Here are just a few of the really special ones that want you to pick up the phone and call so you can come and meet them. Call anytime on 521778 For more in-depth information about each cat you can visit their website www.felinewelfareiow.co.uk. If you are unable to adopt or foster but would still like to help please consider making a donation to them in order that they can keep doing the good work that they do. You will find all the info on the website. Sylvester has had a tough start to his little life, but he is surprisingly confident all things considered. He is used to being with a large group of cats so would like to go to a home with one or two friendly felines. He will be timid initially but with love, patience and time he will become your friend for life. Vinnie is a mainly white boy and is 13 years young. He is a loving boy and needs a caring home in a safe area. He has always been a single pet and would like to keep it this way as he wants his own personal 'human slave’. He is very affectionate and just LOVES human company. He recently had surgery to remove part of his ear flap. He has recovered well and is raring to go !!!! Rupert (tabby/white) is 6 years old and he is very affectionate. He does get on with other cats but he may well take over his humans lock, stock and barrel, so more than one lap is essential!!! Rupert is such a contented boy and wants a home to call his own. Meet Lloyd (black/white) and Harry (white/black). These gorgeous boys are 2 years old and they are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. They are neutered and vaccinated and really are ready to start their new life in a safe and loving home. They are REALLY affectionate boys and will make gorgeous pets for their new ‘parents’ or should we say ‘human slaves’ !!!! 4
Garfield is looking for a loving, safe new home with someone who really cares. He is 9 years young and he needs a home as an only pet. He has recently had a tough time but he is still happy and content with life and has plenty of love to give.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown Following on from my update on the “building works in progress in Sandown last month, I have now made contact with the owner of the St Moritz Hotel and the manager of the Tarvic2 Hotel. Work is underway to determine the future possibilities of the St Moritz and the owner has agreed to keep me informed of progress. The owner of Tarvic2 is awaiting the insurance settlement before he can proceed with any work, but I will be regularly keeping in touch to monitor progress as this situation cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely.
Whilst these new developments are very welcome, I am acutely aware that there are far too many of our residents either homeless or living in unsuitable accommodation. We need a long-term solution to our housing crisis and although work is being done to achieve this, in the interim, we need to find a way to support those who find themselves homeless, by a variety of means. If you are concerned about anyone in our community, please contact me.
The Esplanade Hotel has now been sold at auction and I look forward to some serious investment in this prime site.
I was pleased to represent Sandown at a small commemoration service for a WW1 officer who died 100 years ago, as part of a wider project to research war graves in the Bay.
Work on the new Breakwaters development is now progressing well and the properties are being offered for sale. Whilst the prices will be out of the price range of many, if it encourages further investment in our town that can only be a good thing. Together with all of the improvements that HeritageGB continue to make to Sandham Gardens, that part of our beautiful seafront is spearheading the regeneration of Sandown. 6

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Thanks again to all volunteers who have contributed to the very full programme of activity and entertainment provided in the Town during the Summer. Countless visitors to the Town have been in touch to say how fortunate we are to have so many events and festivals to appeal to a variety of tastes and preferences.
Welcome back to local footballers as well, the new Season has started, and male, female and youth players are welcome at the County Ground – contact details available on website.
Amongst those highlighted are Shanklin Town Brass Band whose programme continues on Sundays 8th and 15th, from 3pm, at Rylstone Gardens Bandstand – Pick & play is also available on Saturdays, from 10am, at the Chalet, from the 7th.
The Town Council continue to highlight residents concerns about the quality of bathing water in the Bay, and it is understood that the planning application to improve quality has been withdrawn – this has serious implications for tourism, as well as other users of the beach and Bay, and we will continue to work to achieve the improvements the multimillion pound grant from 2016-17 should secure, including the potential of regaining the Blue Flag. NB We are also aware of concerns about smells emerging from the drains in the area, and are seeking a resolution.
Shanklin Theatre continues with its Autumn programme with Beyond West End on Wednesdays and Thursdays (4th & 5th, 11th & 12th, 18th & 19th, 25th & 26th); Comedian Rob Beckett on Friday 6th, Chicago Blues Brothers on Saturday 21st, and an Elvis Tribute on 27th and 28th. Congratulations also to Clifton, Carlton and Havelock Hotels, as well as Haven Hall, for their successes in Wight In Bloom – and for all involved in Shanklin in Bloom, as well as South East England in Bloom, with judges highlighting the continued improvement in standards. Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre, following their successes in the IW Community Action Awards, start their Autumn programme with the Thursday Morning Group starting from 12th, and TC’s re-opening on the 13th – again thanks to all volunteers for making this possible. 12
TOWN ACTIVITIES
We have also started preliminary work with partners across the Bay, to put together a fitting and full programme of events to mark VE Day in 2020 – we are very mindful of the events we organised in Shanklin in 1995, the last year when the May Bank Holiday was moved (the 75th anniversary of VE Day falls on Friday 8th May 2020), and hope to develop a comprehensive and inclusive programme. Work continues with the Town Library move, with more detailed plans being submitted, and consideration given to how to maximise eco-features, and increase continued over the page
Monthly News Report for Shanklin. continued
We would also highlight the plans to merge Shanklin and Sandown GP practices, to improve services and maximise the resources available for patients – we hope all goes well. The Town Council are continuing to plan for 2020’s budget, recognising the reduction in grass cutting, verge maintenance, and other IW Council funded services – we will continue to highlight the impact these decisions are having and the potential loss of impact these cuts are having.

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 In a carefully considered move to bring significant improvements to health care in the Bay area, Sandown and Shanklin Health Centres are to join forces to make better use of our medical staff and resources. Everybody knows that Health Services are under pressure nationally and the Island is no exception. Most patients will not be affected as each of our GPs will maintain the patients lists as they do now. The merged Practice will review ‘on the day’ demand and visiting services. It will encourage, access to health services through a wider use of technology, including an updated website, on-line ordering of repeat prescriptions, appointments, e-consultations and general health advice. There are no plans to close either site now or in the future as both centres, and their staff, are needed to maintain services now and to have capacity for the future . The main purpose is to make better use of our doctors, medical staff and facilities of both Centres. BREAST CANCER CARE – WONDERFUL FUND-RAISING EFFORTS Sarah Marie Tyrrell-Jones of Sandown, along with some dedicated supporters are running a tremendous campaign to raise funds to support Breast Cancer Care research. Sarah’s aim is to raise £10K towards Breast cancer research. In the 18 months of her campaign she has already raised £7414.66 to-date via two head shaves, tombola’s, cake stalls, coffee mornings, name the teddy, on-line raffles and some very generous donations. As our Area’s Community Fund raiser, Sarah is also willing to gives talks and run quizzes within our community. Can I urge everybody to attend Sarah’s fundraising events if you get the chance. IMPROVING SANDOWN HIGH STREET - THE OLD KEBAB SHOP In response to a rejected planning application for the old Kebab shop in Sandown High Street, I contacted the owner via his architect and arranged a meeting with Planners to discuss the issues of concern. The meeting was very productive, and both sides compromised and finally reached agreement on what would be included in a revised planning application. There will be considerable reconstruction of the building internally and along the roofline. In addition, the building will be extended at the rear for more living accommodation. The shop front will be the last element of the refurbishment, but the good news is that the owner says he already has two businesses interested moving in. The revised application has been submitted. 18
