120 years of Isle of Wight retailing comes to an end Beardsalls has been a household name on the Isle of Wight since 1901. Their first retail shop started on Shanklin Esplanade by John Beardsall. This family business has waxed and waned over the years, through 2 World Wars, storms, floods and numerous recessions. The retailer has always developed it’s offering to match the times, but now alas, with the advent of internet shopping and the near total collapse of high street business due to the Covid pandemic the time has come to shut its retail doors for ever. Four generations of the Beardsalls family have been custodians of the business. John’s son Bernard inherited the Esplanade shop upon his death and soon expanded into another unit in Regent Street, Shanklin, quickly becoming the Island’s very first ‘lending Library’. Bernard’s premature death meant that his widow and youngest son, Michael took over the reins and were soon joined by Mike’s wife Iris and his elder brother Peter. The shop expanded taking on new premises in Ventnor and developing the range of goods to include books, greeting cards and photocopy services. In 1999 Michael’s son Toby joined the team and further expanded into Ryde, Sandown and Newport. Toby Beardsall says “We have been on an exciting journey with Beardsalls. Some of our long standing loyal customers who dealt with my parents in the 60’s and 70’s have supported us through good times and bad, but now we must move on and develop a new business for the modern age” Beardsalls move into printing has enabled them to build on the heritage of the Beardsalls brand, maintaining the core belief of great customer service. Its Print Studio in Orchard Street, Newport opened in 2018 and will remain open and continue to develop services as Beardsalls has always done in the past. Printing is done on site and ranges from wrapping and signwriting vans to printing the magazine that you are reading now. Beardsalls retail may be gone, but the name should not be forgotten.
Welcome to the September issue which marks a special day for Island Magazines. You can find out more on page 15. I don’t think anyone can say we haven’t had a summer - at the time of writing this we have just come out of a heatwave and I like many others are thankful for the drop in temperature. It was at such an unbearable level but like with many things this year we got through it!!! I always rave about the wonderful scenic views and the countryside on the island. Just a five-minute trip out of any town centre and you will be greeted by fields and countryside of varying shades from the recently sown to the just harvested. I like nothing more than watching the tractors and machinery working the land, there is something calming about watching them cut, dry, turn and bale hay. I know some people do not like being behind tractors and trailers on the road but I think they are a great sight to see and at the end of the day they are only doing their job like we all are. This month’s issue is packed with news and information. I am always happy to receive emails and phone calls from readers and if you have anything to share with others please feel free to get in touch. I hope you all enjoy reading this issue and thank you to all advertisers, contributors and readers for supporting Island Magazines. I look forward to catching up with you next month. Best wishes and stay safe.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk The Town Council have officially opened the new Community Library, located at Falcon Cross, between Falcon Cross Hall and the Public Conveniences: we were grateful of the Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Susie Sheldon, and the High Sheriff, Mrs Caroline Peel, for taking part in the opening ceremony as part of VJ Day @ 75 Commemorations and Celebrations.
On the Day a special flag, designed by a local student, was raised, and the blessing of a memorial dedicated to the animals that died in the conflicts.
Library co-ordinator Maria Darbon and the team, have worked under very difficult circumstances to get the library up and running (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday mornings), and the number of services being provided will increase in the months and years ahead – and the efforts of the volunteers to keep the service going is greatly appreciated.
NB The Town Council has continued to support safe shopping, and continues to fund the local school crossing patrol in Shanklin; funds the beach waste bins, grounds maintenance and grass cutting, as well as a range of community services, and a £30,000 investment in Hope Road Public Toilets.
Mayor and Mayoress, Steve and Esther Knight, welcomed guests to the ribbon cutting, and thanked Ben Vernon and Tim North for providing a state of the art building for the residents of Shanklin and visitors to the Town – as well as starting work on the new town office. The Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff, were escorted on VJ Day @ 75 by Darren and John Holmberg in WW2 vehicles, and met service personnel at the Royal British Legion, laid wreaths with Mayor Steve Knight and curator Terry Carpenter; and they also laid wreaths and Lake and Sandown Memorials, visited the Honour Trail, and participated in a Bay Service to mark VJ Day @ 75, conducted by Rev Mark Williams at Christ Church. 4
Bus services, such as the volunteer provided 22 and 24 local bus routes, are being maintained and there is a review of the service timetables.
The Town Council continue to campaign for the repair of Hope Road on the approach to the Esplanade: the Town Council helped secure a £6 million investment programme for Southern Water in Shanklin, with local Councillors sitting on the steering group, and the Town Council have asked for urgent action, particularly as the lift is also out of action. It is good to see local sport returning under Covid-19 safety measures, with football, cricket, bowls, and other sports operating under strict conditions. We hope all school children are able to return safely to their schools in the Bay this month, as we know how difficult it has been in recent months – and we also hope the recent exam results enable students to follow the pathways they choose. continued over the page

We’d like to thank all neighbours and residents for getting in touch regarding the arrangements that have been put in place during the pandemic lockdown; the Town Council continues to support the Bay helpline and the contact number is 01983 823600, and the team of volunteers have made a real difference to all those residents supported during the last 6 months. Thanks also to those students that contributed to the ‘Growing Up In Sandown Bay’ film which is available on You Tube – thanks to Kevin and all involved in the production of the film, launched to coincide with VJ Day @ 75. Take care and stay safe. Jon Gilbey & Richard Priest

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 I hope you are all still well and coping with the slow return to a type of normality. A significant step forward will be the return of our children to school this month and more people returning to work; certainly, the traffic on our roads is returning to normal during the daytime. Summer has seen a huge influx of visitors to the Island and Sandown’s beaches have been very busy; I just hope that has been translated into a good trade and income that will see our business community through the winter. ISLAND BEACH AMBASSADORS APPOINTED TO HELP RESIDENTS & TOURISTS - Last month I reported that the IW Council had set up a working group to look at issues connected with the Islands beaches. Our by-laws need reviewing and safety in the water is an important subject. The first action from the working group was the appointment of Beach Ambassadors whose task is to patrol beaches in the Bay, Ryde and Ventnor to advise people on safe distancing, hygiene and litter disposal. The IW Council is already looking at re-instating buoys next year along the seafronts to safeguard swimmers.
SANDOWN HONOUR TRAIL TEAM PRESENT GREEN TOWN VOLUNTEERS WITH £500 - Last Month the Sandown Honour Trail team presented Christine Jackson and Ben Holbrook from our Sandown Green Town Volunteers with a cheque for £500 from the scheme’s income, to help them with their fantastic work. Edward Archdale from Grattan Partners, the Engravers and Andy Wray from Dempsey’s of Sandown, who mount the plaques also attended. The Honour Trail is proving extremely popular and is attracting tourists to Sandown, with some tourists even returning every year to see their plaques. GET YOUR GARDEN WASTE COLLECTED FROM YOUR HOME The waiting list is open for next year’s green garden waste collection service. The fortnightly garden waste service is entering its third year and it’s been so popular that we’ve expanded the service. You can put your name on the waiting list now via the IW Council Website. Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown There cannot be many people in the Sandown area who didn’t become aware of the situation developing down at the Canoe Lake next to Dinosaur Isle recently. The heatwave had resulted in the water level of the lake becoming critically low and endangering the lives of the carp. The local community sprang into action to save the fish.
the face of local government, but only if we can encourage good people to come forward to represent their local community at grass roots level, irrespective of National politics. There is a strong independent group that already exists within the IOW Council and we need to build on that strength further to change the way that the island is governed.
There were many factors to be overcome, but one element that became evident right from the start was the need for community leadership. The pandemic has highlighted the fact that leadership within the various sectors of our community is vital to achieve the resilience that is necessary to cope when situations arise that need a rapid response.
One thing that the pandemic has taught us is that we need to work collectively within our communities, not only to survive, but to grow and flourish, to promote sustainability and new initiatives that will create a better society for the future. That has been and will continue to be my focus.
There are many lessons to be learned here. As the face of the local authority it was important that I took a strategic approach and looked at the bigger picture to ensure that, in dealing with the immediate crisis, we didn’t create a bigger, more long term one. Whilst the enthusiasm of the volunteers was commendable, I was well aware that there was little risk management and that people were putting themselves at risk. Any approach in these situations needs to be proportionate, appropriate and within the law. That’s not always easy in the heat of the moment. However, I remained engaged and continued to work behind the scenes. We need effective leaders within our community to work together. People who are willing to face adversity for the greater good. At the time of writing, the elections are still planned for May 2021. We have a good opportunity to change the face of 12
I am continuing to support residents with local issues despite the pandemic restrictions. If anything, there is more of a need to ensure that we don’t let issues go “under the wire”. I’m grateful to residents for continuing to put their faith in me. I am once again holding my monthly Councillor surgeries on the first Saturday of each month at Yaverland Sailing Club, from 11am until midday, at the outside area, to enable social distancing. I’m happy to hold surgeries more frequently if residents feel that would be of value. Just let me know. A reminder that Cllr Heather Humby is available on 402024 or at heatherhumby@ sandowntowncouncil.gov.uk and will resume her weekly Councillor Surgery at Sandown Library when the restrictions are lifted. Stay safe everyone

During lockdown many of us took to our gardens and enjoyed the pleasure of growing a variety of plants, veg and fruit. One plant that was really popular with both adults and children was the humble sunflower. You don’t have to go far to see one of these cheery plants peering over the hedge or fence.
These wonderful flowers can reach heights of up to 12ft with heads bigger than your hands, unless of course you are growing the dwarf variety which has a height of about 2ft. Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone’s (or your) day. Young sunflowers track the sun, also referred to as heliotropism. A young sunflower’s face follows the sun from sunrise (east) to sunset (west) every day and repeats the cycle until maturity. As sunflowers reach maturity, it behaves differently. The overall growth of the plant slows down gradually, the circadian rhythm (their internal biological clock) ensures that the plant reacts more strongly to sunlight early in the morning than the afternoon or evening. A mature sunflower does not move with the sun throughout the day; rather, it just faces east. I feel that during lockdown the island experienced a ‘sunflower boom’… we have another few months to wait to see if a ‘baby boom’ also occurred!!!!! 13

The September issue marks Island Magazines 10th Anniversary and never in my wildest dreams did I think back in 2010 that it would grow from just the one area to seven, covering pretty much the whole of the Island. The very first area was East Cowes & Whippingham and this was because at the time it was my hometown and had a real community feel. It was so well received amongst residents that I launched the Cowes, Gurnard & Northwood area in November 2011. 2012 was a very busy year and this was the year Island Magazines really stood out and a further three areas were added, Sandown & Shanklin launched in February, Ryde & Wootton in July and finally in October 2012 Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth. These five areas kept me very busy for the next couple of years and then I started to receive requests from Newport residents asking if I was going to be producing a magazine for their area? How could I refuse... and Newport & Carisbrooke was launched in April 2014. Fast forward 4 years until September 2018 and the Bembridge & St Helens area was launched. There is real community spirit in these two villages and as this is what the magazine is all about it, it was only natural that this area would become the seventh area to be added to the family. I am lucky that I can say I love my job; I love what the magazine has become and how it has taken shape. When I sit down and think about the people involved each month it’s quite astonishing... Firstly, you have myself, all the wonderful advertisers, news contributors which are made up of Councillors and Parish/Town Councils, some of them I have been working with since the start, then the team of printers who print and pack it every month and then all the wonderful distributors who Residential & Commercial grounds maintenance kindly allow me to fly in and out of their premises contracts, including turfing, every month (now wearing a mask) and deliver a hedge and grass cutting. pile to them which they kindly display ready for the thousands of readers who come and pick up a copy Timber Fencing Specialists to take home and read. Without them all playing Over 30 years experience their part there really wouldn’t be a local community and fully insured magazine and we all work together like well-oiled Covering the whole of cogs. the Isle of Wight
