Finding that potential By Alex Moseley All of us can get lost concerning learning and where to put our energies. And after the recent disruptions, many students may have lost the momentum needed to help them through their education. What is wonderful to see is when pupils discover, or rediscover, a passion that helps them progress. Then their potential begins to show and learning the content makes more sense. Content learning is tough for many though. We’re often told to ‘go and learn’, but how do we learn when each of us has different interests, or when we have no clue where to start? With a sense of direction, learning can become very effective – whether the goal is to get into the university or college of choice, or to achieve passes needed for work. Tuition is not the same as schooling as it is bespoke and is without the distraction of the classroom and other pupils’ needs. Knowing the individual pupil’s requirements and direction are critical for effective learning, and that is best drawn out from experienced tutors. For twenty years I have coached hundreds of pupils. With experiences as a university lecturer, school teacher, running businesses, and writing books, I bring an ‘out of the box’ review of students’ to tune into the student’s passion and direction. I offer a free consultation to see if we can work together and find that potential lurking within! See main advert below for contact details.

elcome to the September issue of Island Magazines and as you know I always like to give a little mention about the weather...
In this last month alone, we have had a heat wave that at times was unbearable and we’ve also had monsoon season with serious flooding across the Island. To say it’s been unpredictable is an understatement. Let’s see what September brings us! It seems that almost everyday somebody is being scammed and we have teamed up with IWASP (Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership) to bring you the latest scams that are doing the ‘rounds’. There are some unscrupulous criminals trying every possible way to get people to part with their money. On page 14 you can find some of the latest scams reported to Trading Standards. In this issue you will find the regular news reports for your area and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11 will keep you informed of local and community events happening across the Island. If you have an event coming up, please feel free to send us the details via any of the means below. We have some great advertisers and as always please support them as it’s been a rough 18 months for many local businesses. I hope you have a great September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month

Tractors…. For the past couple of years, the front cover of the September issue has been reserved for anything tractor themed! Two reasons for this… since a very young age I have always had a love of tractors and secondly when you live on an island, during harvesting season, you are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or dare I mention it stuck behind one in traffic. I have recently moved from my central rural location at Arreton and must admit I miss seeing the tractors, trailers and all manner of agricultural machinery passing my window.

Island Line Upgrade Update The heavy rainfall on the Island in August caused flash flooding in many areas, with the running water having a significant impact on several areas of the Island Line track. This has resulted in 16 sites across the network are now in need of urgent attention, requiring 200 tonnes of ballast being transported from the mainland. The Island Line maintenance team has commenced repair works to the track infrastructure.
September, but the impact of the flooding has now added uncertainty to the programme as they establish both the time it will take to fix the infrastructure and the knock-on impact on testing, training and certification. SWR apologise for the ongoing uncertainty for their customers and the communities they serve, and are working incredibly hard to reopen the Island Line as soon as possible.
Due to the nature of this work and the machinery used, some disturbance will be unavoidable, and SWR apologised for this in advance. Specialist vehicles that work on the rails sound their horn briefly to alert staff on track when they are moving. This is to keep teams working in the area safe. SWR can reassure you that all staff working on site are fully briefed on working responsibly in the local community Island Roads Update on Structures and keeping noise levels to an absolute A programme of work to inspect and minimum level. upgrade (where necessary) retaining walls, bridges and parapets on the highway In terms of the upgrade project itself, good network across the Island will commence progress has been made with the testing of shortly. a course of action will be decided to ensure each is maintained to the standards required by the highways PFI contract The programme which is planned to last until April 2023 has an initial focus on 90 structures which are deemed to be the highest priority. The inspection and investigation element of the work is due to be completed by the end of August. Many of these upgrades will require Island Roads to implement traffic management in order to undertake this work. In such cases, residents and town and parish councils are informed by writing in advance. While Island Roads will do what they can to minimise inconvenience, it is sometimes inevitable that this work will, unfortunately, bring with it some localised, short-term disruption. Examples of some of the more extensive recent works in Shanklin are; Westhill Road, Osborne Steps and Delphi Road. Whilst it is aimed to complete the programme of investigation works by the end of August, there may be a few instances where additional investigations are required. The works remaining to be completed in Shanklin over the next few weeks include Hope Hill and Shanklin Chine. We are both fully committed to ensure that Shanklin receives its share of the £40 million grant secured for dealing
with coastal erosion which is spent on restoring the sea wall, groynes, slipways and historic paths in the Town.
Big Mead Update The falling water level in Big Mead pond and the level of silting up has been a cause of concern for some time. Investigations of the feeder stream suggests that the water flow has inadvertently been redirected as part of the Southern Water scheme of work to improve bathing water quality in the Bay. The feeder stream is being further investigated from its source on the Downs, quotes are being sought for dredging the silt from the pond, and a harmless blue dye is being added that will dramatically reduce algae bloom in the water.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre T:- 400744/07948 757977 E:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown We are now in September and hopefully enjoying sunny days and warm evenings. It has been good to see the island come alive with many visitors once again, enjoying all the beauty that we see on a daily basis. It’s fair to say that we have had some rather extreme weather in the last month or so which has caused some severe problems with both flooding and sewerage, especially around the Avenue Road area. We are having ongoing meetings with the management of Southern Water to address these issues. There are currently 3 places on the island where sandbags can be picked up if needed. Simeon Street Recreation Ground is the nearest one to Sandown. I also thought that it might be useful for you to have the following information: Who to call in the event of a flood? If you need to be evacuated because of severe flooding or damage, contact the police or dial 999. For general issues around flooding, contact the Isle of Wight Council on (01983) 823600 (this also doubles up as the COVID-19 support line). If you believe the flooding is from a main river or the sea, contact the Environment Agency on 0345 988 1188. www.environment-agency.gov.uk The Environment Agency also provides help on flooding issues via its Floodline: 0345 988 1188. To report flooding on the highway or drainage issues, contact Island Roads on (01983) 822440. www.islandroads.com 8
Notify Southern Water if flooding affects your mains sewage/public drains by calling 0330 303 0368. www.southernwater.co.uk Notify the National Grid to report a gas leak as the result of flooding on 0800 111 999. Notify SSE of electrical issues such as power cuts by calling 105. For non-emergency calls pertaining to vulnerable older people, call adult services on (01983) 823340 (office hours) or (01983) 821105 (out of hours). NHS ‘111’ for non-urgent health concerns. Also, please be aware of bogus tradesmen who may be cold calling in such situations to offer repairs to your property. At the time of writing there is still no date for the reinstatement of Island Line, but I am in touch with South Western Railway and will update residents via Facebook as soon as I have any news. The Island Planning Strategy (IPS) is used to guide development on the island over the next 15 years and Sandown is very much a part of this. The plan is developed in consultation with the local community. It will deal with future needs and opportunities in relation to: • Environment • Community • Growth • Housing • Economy • Transport A Draft Island Planning Strategy has been prepared for public consultation and we are continued over the page

Trading Standards have some more scams for you to be aware of. Residents have reported scams from the following – • A call from someone claiming to be from TV insurance, stating that their insurance had expired and it needed to be renewed. They claimed the resident owed £180 but they didn’t have any insurance and had recently changed their television. The caller then insisted that they needed to pay and they couldn’t pay in instalments, they went as far as to demand they use a credit card, go overdrawn or borrow money from a friend. Luckily the resident reported this to a trusted contact who confirmed that this was definitely a SCAM. • We have received reports of callers ringing residents to say that they want to check their meters, implying they are from SSE. On checking the number online there are large numbers of complaints about it. If in doubt check with SSE to confirm if the call is genuine • Action Fraud has received over 700 reports from members of the public about fake emails purporting to be from the NHS. The emails claim to be able to provide people with a “digital passport” that “proves you have been vaccinated against COVID-19”. These emails are fake, and the links within them lead to genuine-looking websites that steal your personal and financial information. Remember, the vaccine is free of charge. At no point will you be asked to pay. • Emails have been received purporting to be from the HMRC stating ‘ if you do not reply to this email with the details required, you will not be eligible for any refunds from HMRC’ – this is a SCAM and legitimate organisations will never contact you in this way. You can check if a phone number is a scam – put the number that called you into google and select the website who-called.co.uk this will tell you if the number is definitely or likely to be a scam and quite often others who have received it will comment on their experience. Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 Facebook: Cllr Ian Ward BEM – Sandown South COMMUNITY BUSES – PLEASE USE THEM OR LOSE THEM No 22 and No 24 Sandown, Lake, Shanklin. Volunteers drive community buses to provide a service for residents who would otherwise not get a bus service. During the pandemic lockdown Community Bus use reduced dramatically as you would expect. However, it is important that residents go back to using them because if demand remains low and passenger donations that pay for essential expenses reduce, the service becomes unviable and may have to stop. Currently the No 22 runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the No 24 runs on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please support your community bus service and volunteers, please don’t forget to leave a small donation of around £1 for a return trip DINOSAUR PARK – A TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY FOR SANDOWN I attended a meeting with the Chairman of the Dinosaur Isle Group and other members of the trust who explained their plans and actions to date. They are working with the Dinosaurier Parks to establish a park here in Sandown. This would be a huge regeneration boost for Sandown. Dinosaurier has established a park in Lourinha, Portugal and the mayor of Lourinha has told the group that it is a huge success and has boosted the towns economy by around 60 million Euros overall and allowed them to build several new hotels to cope with additional 500,000 tourists attracted to the town. There are currently no layout plans so people who are concerned about plastic Dinosaurs and Browns are reacting to rumour and conjecture. REGENERATION UPDATES 1.
