In January we heard the news that Shannon Currie had passed away. We’d worked with Shannon over many years and like many in this tight knit travel industry we were deeply saddened. He was a pleasure to work with and a genuinely nice guy. We asked Shannon’s good friend and FJ workmate, Nick Dew, to pen some words.

New Caledonia Falling in love with a land of contrasts

By Matt Taylor

Š GIE Tourisme Province Nord – Ducandas

4 islandtime March/April 2015

New Caledonia is renowned for its magical mix of French sophistication and Melanesian traditions. What’s less well known is the wonderful diversity that's on offer to Kiwi travellers. When it comes to planning a trip, most people tend to stay in Noumea. Which is understandable, given its vast array of eateries, shopping and wonderful beaches. However, there is so much more to see and do outside the cosmopolitan capital. And anyone limiting their "New Cal" experience to Noumea is missing out on something very special indeed.

In simple terms, New Caledonia can be broken down into four major regions. The mainland (Grand Terre) which has its own northern and southern region - Noumea is in the south. The Isle of Pines which lies to the south of Grand Terre, the Loyalty Islands (of Maré, Lifou and Ouvéa) which are due east, and the tiny Belep Archipelago in the northwest.

Noumea. The first port of call Tontouta International Airport is the first stop for visitors coming into New Caledonia and is conveniently located about 30 minutes drive from Noumea. With a population of 90,000, Noumea is by far the largest urban centre in New Caledonia and remains the hub for most holidaymakers.

City by the sea Noumea sits on a large peninsula with its string of beautiful bays that give it a wonderfully relaxed feel. Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons are two of the best local beaches. Here you’ll find numerous accommodation options, eateries and entertainment, plus you’re only five minutes drive from downtown Noumea. The strip along Baie des Citrons has one restaurant and bar after another. You’ll find everything here, from Australian coffee chains, to tapas joints, American style steakhouses and even a microbrewery. Try Les 3 Brasseurs where you can choose from blonde, amber, brown and sometimes a seasonal variety all brewed on site. Tasting trays are available and highly recommended, plus the food is excellent. Just around the corner from Baie des Citrons, Anse Vata also has a fine choice of eateries. For an overwater dining experience pop into Le Roof restaurant at the southern end of Anse Vata. Again the views are great, especially at sunsets, and they have a large menu to choose from with dishes like mahi-mahi risotto and rossini-style beef fillet with pan-fried foie gras. Keep a look out for the stingrays passing by or the odd turtle. If you’d like to take a stroll through Noumea's old heart, head for the Place des Cocotiers a vast tropical garden where olive and palm trees shade classical French fountains and elaborate Kanak totem poles. With a history that dates back to the late 1880s, this is a social hub, with families holding picnics; men playing pétanque. It’s also home to regular concerts and street markets and if you happen to be here around Christmas, you’ll see it lit up with beautiful lights. Another great place to visit is the Municipal Market next to the water at Port Moselle. At 4.30 each morning, local producers set up their stalls with locally grown fruit, vegetables and herbs. You'll also pick up a croissant and pain au chocolat for about NZ$2.50.

6 islandtime March/April 2015

Prices compare to what you'll find in New Zealand, plus it's fun doing your shopping alongside the locals. Mornings are the quietest part of the day at the markets, but the place gets busier and busier as the day rolls on. Sitting alongside the fruit and veggie stands is La Buvette du Marche - which is basically a bar that sells a variety of food and coffee, but no alcohol. Try a croque monsieur (toasted ham and cheese sandwich), it's a very tasty snack.

Day tripping from Noumea Ile Aux Canard. Otherwise known as Duck Island, this stunning little spot is roughly a kilometre off Anse Vata Beach. Local company Plages Loisirs run taxi boats out to Duck Island and you'll find their base half way along Anse Vata Beach - look out for the hut with the big thatched cone roof (you can't miss it). Their boats go back and forth between the island all day long, so there's no need to book - and if you walk up just after a boat has left, don't worry, you'll only need to wait 10 minutes or so for the next one to whisk you away. The return fare is around NZ$10. If you want to take your own food, drink and snorkelling gear to the island that's fine - plenty of people do. The other option is hiring your snorkelling gear once you arrive and grabbing a bite from the island's funky little restaurant that serves up a full menu, including snacks, mains (the seared tuna is delicious) and desserts. They also have a full bar for liquid refreshments - you'll get a big bottle of water for around NZ$6 and a cold can of beer for the same. The atmosphere is superbly laid back and the snorkelling is top notch with crystal clear water and loads of colourful fish meandering their way through the coral. And even if the wind gets up, this part of this island is sheltered from the breeze. All in all, it's a fun, affordable day trip, an ideal place to spend a few hours kicking back, plus it's suitable for adults and kids alike.

Amedee Lighthouse Island For those wanting to go a bit further afield there's the full day trip (8.30am to 5pm) to the historic and exceptionally beautiful Amedee Lighthouse Island. Local company Mary D are the island tour experts and they’ll get you there in the comfort of one of their high-speed ferries. This protected nature reserve is 24km out of Noumea, which means a 30 minute boat trip across the world's largest lagoon. For the price of around NZ$200 your trip includes a welcome cocktail drink, full buffet lunch, island dance show, glass-bottom boat trip and a barrier reef cruise. They'll even show you how to climb a coconut tree and tie a sarong - tying a sarong probably the handier of those two skills! The lighthouse itself was actually built in Paris in 1861, before being dismantled and shipped to Amedee where it was re-erected - a job that took 10 months of hard labour. Walking to the top takes exactly 247 steps, but the panoramic view is worth the effort. If you feel like relaxing that's fine, there's plenty of time to kick back on the beach or go for a snorkel.

Touring around Grand Terre So you’re ready to explore? The island of Grand Terre (Noumea is in its southern region) is big. In fact the size of Grand Terre is a real surprise to travellers used to islands like Tonga, Samoa and Rarotonga. At roughly 450km long and 50km wide, Grand Terre is the third largest island in the Pacific - so no, you won't be scootering around it in an hour or so. The size provides a wonderful diversity unmatched anywhere in the Pacific.

Discovering the North by road The northern half of Grand Terre is (rather appropriately) called the Northern Province. The area is very diverse, with wide open plains on the West Coast through to superb waterfalls and tropical forests on the East Coast, as well as deserted islands, pretty beaches and exceptional diving sites. Visitors who love nature and unspoilt spots will love it here. Without question one of the best ways to explore this region is by car. The roads are good, you have the freedom to stop here and there and travel with complete freedom, plus it doesn’t take too long to get used to driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. Heading north from Noumea there are numerous highlights. These include the spectacular Poe Beach near Bourail, plus you can take a detour to Roche Percee Beach and check out the impressive rock formations that have been carved by wind and waves. The Northern Province capital of Kone is a good place to spend the night, plus it’s not far from the iconic Heart of Voh, the heart-shaped mangrove made famous by photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. If you’d like to get a view of lagoon from nearby Mount Karepec, guides are available. If you head from west to east, you come to Hienghene, another Northern Province must-see. The area is famous for Lindéralique rocks - towering black limestone rocks that you will first see on the road south of Hienghene. While all are spectacular, don’t miss the Poule Couveuse rock formation (translated means the Brooding Hen) that lie at the entrance to Hiengene Bay. A visit to Belvédère will give you the best lookout point. If the weather is clear you’ll also be able to see Mount Panié, New Caledonia's highest peak at just over 1600m. The very Far North area is known worldwide as one of the top destinations for fly fishing, but you can also find lots of tours to enjoy the wild landscapes: flights over the reef, boat day trips on amazing islets, or go on a cultural discovery to the Tiebaghi’s old mining village, plus there are lots of things to do and see in Poum.

Amedee Lighthouse Island © Oliver Strewe - Province Sud

If you’re looking for places to stay on your driving adventure, Le Tieti Hotel in Poindimie is an amazing property set on one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire East Coast. Up the road, Le Koulnoué Village in Hienghene offers 50 bungalows, all facing the sea and surrounded by a coconut plantation and the legendary Linderalique cliffs that create a breathtaking backdrop. And if you make your way to stunning far north, Le Malabou Beach Hotel in Poum is a boutique property with a reputation for fine customer service – it also has three family suites if you happen to be travelling with the kids. It should also be noted that both Le Koulnoué Village and Le Malabou Beach Hotel will undergo a full refurbishment during 2015, so stay tuned for updates as these happen.

Outstanding outer islands

Ouvea. World Heritage wonder

Want to really get away from it all? Quite simply, New Caledonia has some of the world’s most beautiful islands and they all within fairly easy reach of the mainland. So prepare yourself for pure peace, white powdery sand and a pace of life that couldn’t get much quieter.

Ouvea is a stunning island with 25km of the most perfect white sand. The surrounding reef and its marine life are so impressive they're on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Needless to say this heaven for divers - and those in need of extra adrenalin can go shark watching, one of the most popular attractions on the island.

The Isle of Pines (Ile des Pins)

Mare. Walk on the wild side

Eighty kilometres southeast of Noumea you'll find the Isle of Pines. It's a slice of paradise as far from high rises and traffic jams as you can get. Need a break from the stresses of life - this is the place. It is possible to visit the island for a day trip, but the locals recommend a stay of three days, which would be equal to seven days relaxation in most other places!

Even compared to Lifou and Ouvea, Mare is undeveloped as a tourist destination. For instance, the island is devoid of road signs - which makes having a local guide to show you around fairly important! Unless you just want to see where the road takes you. Rugged cliffs, stunning beaches and sunken pools characterise the landscape of Mare.

You could spend those days on the flawless white sand beaches like Kuto Bay or Kanumera Bay, go scuba diving in the crystal clear waters, sail on a outrigger, explore the forest by horseback or hire a scooter and cruise the island. For a true Robinson Crusoe experience you can even take a tour out to the cute sandy dot known as Nokanhui Atoll, which includes a picnic on Brush Island on the way back. And of course there's always the option of doing absolutely nothing. Which is one reason why people keep coming back. Air Caledonie have a minimum of two flights per day leaving from Magenta Domestic Airport. The Betico quick catamaran sails most Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Remote in The Loyalty Islands Sure you can get away from it all on Grand Terre and Isle de Pins, but true isolation comes in the small but breathtakingly beautiful Loyalty Islands of Lifou, Ouvea and Mare. Don't expect to stay in a big resort and have loads of shops and restaurants at your fingertips they don't exist. And that's the charm of the Loyalty Islands. They haven't been touched by mass tourism. Accommodation is in small resorts or there's the option of local home stays - which gives travellers a chance to experience local life first hand.

Lifou. Pretty as a picture Lifou is the largest and most populated of the Loyalty Islands. A grand total of 10,000 people! Secluded beaches, rugged coastal cliffs and a rich Melanesian culture are the real highlights. The pure white sands of Peng Beach are the definition of picture postcard. Underground limestone caves like the Grotte les Joyaux (the Jewels of Luengoni) have rock pools to explore, and between July and September you may even catch glimpse of a passing humpback whale.

8 islandtime March/April 2015

If you were going to use one word to describe it you'd say "wild". And that's the allure. The southwestern coast of the island is littered with beautiful beaches. (It's a common theme with the Loyalty Islands, but nevertheless it's absolutely true). Swimming and snorkelling is fantastic and if you happen to be here between July and September, make the journey to Eni Beach where you may glimpse a passing humpback whale. Inland you'll find numerous limestone water holes. Le Bone de la Leproserie near the town of Medu and Aquarium Naturelle south of Tadine are tow of the islands' best examples and must sees when you're on the island. There are also some great walks on Mare, including the coastal track to Shabadaran. There are a few steep cliffs to get up, but the stunning views make the effort more than worthwhile.

Getting there You'll find the laid-back Loyalty Islands of Mare, Lifou and Ouvea around 100km east of Grand Terre. If you want to fly there Air Caledonie has daily flights leaving from Noumea, plus The Betico catamaran makes the journey several times a week.

A Pacific beauty New Caledonia is the place you go when you want something different. It's a place of "bonjour" and "Merci", it's horse riding up a mountain, it's sailing through a giant lagoon, it's crepes, cheese and fine French wine. It's hiking through magical forests. It's walking on white powdery sand. It's learning about age old Melanesian cultures. It's so much more than fly in, flop down. And it's all less than three hours away.

New Caledonia - an easy choice for the school holidays School holidays are always a busy travel time – which can make it tricky to secure an airfare at a good price. But for those wanting a family trip with a difference, Aircalin has a protected year-round fare from only $749 return (levies/taxes included) ex Auckland to New Caledonia. Aircalin doesn't surcharge this peak travel time so travellers get the benefit whether they are air only or on an inclusive package. There are five flights a week to choose from, all with an SB flight number – so travellers receive a full service offer on every flight – including one piece of checked luggage (up to 23 kilos), an inflight meal, drinks and entertainment programme. Agents should check availability now, in W class, for the April, July and September school holidays – you’ll be impressed by how easy and cost-effective New Caledonia is at this peak time.

New Caledonia Weekly - now available at www.aircalin.co.nz The New Caledonia Weekly is a free tourist newspaper, available at a range of locations around New Caledonia, which showcases many holidaying options throughout New Caledonia! A real mix of what to see and do, history, wining and dining, a calendar of events, recipes, useful contact numbers and useful French phrases. The New Caledonia Weekly comes out every few weeks and the good news is that you can now access this for your clients and yourselves of course by going to Aircalin’s New Zealand website – www.aircalin.com.

Lava, laughter, sun and smiles. Vanuatu is the place for a fun-filled family holiday. By Matt Taylor

Š Vanuatu Tourism – David Kirkland

10 islandtime March/April 2015

The South Pacific islands offer families a feast of activities and fine accommodation, but very few offer the variety, fun and authentic experience you’ll find in Vanuatu. Going on a family holiday is the time to leave your regular schedules behind. No school dropsoffs, no cleaning their rooms, none of the normal errands to run. It’s a time to laugh, play and explore as a family. And if done well, sharing a travel experience with your children can strengthen family bonds and provide your kids with a wealth of memories. With that mind, Vanuatu is the perfect place to visit. Here there is a culture where children are treasured. They play a big part in family life and become actively involved in all aspects of the local community from an early age. Add this wonderful, child-friendly attitude to the choice of wonderful properties and the vast variety of activities on offer, and it's no wonder Vanuatu makes for a truly marvellous family holiday.

Port Vila is your first stop Vanuatu’s biggest centre is its capital Port Vila. Sitting on the island of Efate, Port Vila is home to the nation’s international airport, which makes the charming town the first stop for visiting families. It’s also the ideal spot to base a family adventure. It's a bustling little town that lies around a beautiful, natural harbour. Steep hillsides offer panoramic views and the dusty streets are always abuzz with locals going about their day and tourists exploring. There are plenty of shops to look through, selling everything from surf wear to local art and crafts, plus there is a fantastic choice of eateries. A must see for families is the local market which is packed full of local vendors selling an abundance of fresh organic produce. It’s sure to be an eye-opener for most Kiwi kids used to New World and Countdown. And from a practical point of view, mum and dad can pick up some supplies to keep the troops from going hungry. If you’d like to stock up in more familiar surroundings, Port Vila also has a supermarket that sells all the usual mainstream foods you get back home – with prices roughly the same too. Picking a place to stay is one of the key considerations for any family holiday, and Port Vila has some excellent options.

Iririki Island ResortA top pick with children There was a time when Iririki Island Resort focused on the couples market, but those days are gone. In fact, now you're just as likely to find families frolicking poolside as a couple of newlyweds. Iririki’s spacious two-level apartments can sleep a family of five with ease, plus they have two new two-bedroom Deluxe Family Fares providing 68 square metres of luxurious family space and breathtaking views of Port Vila Harbour. This room type boasts a master bedroom with a large sitting area as well as a separate bedroom so adults can relax in private without disturbing sleeping children! And if a self-catering option is preferred, Iririki also has Deluxe Pool View and Deluxe Ocean View rooms with kitchen facilities. The children’s activities centre around the cutely named Pikinini Club, which caters for children 13 years and under. It's also free, which is another bonus for their parents. Children can be kept occupied for seven days a week from 10am to 6pm enjoying numerous activities like building sandcastles, face painting, movies, nature walks, collecting shells and hunting for hermit crabs. Children still have lots to do outside of the organised activities. The four-tiered pool complex is set up for hours of watery fun, and with its wide-open spaces, Iririki might just be the ultimate place for a game of hide and seek! Kayaks and catamarans are also complimentary to Iririki guests and children under 13 years stay, play and eat free at Iririki when sharing a room with adults and using existing bedding.

As well as that, Le Lagon offers younger guests the chance to get a real taste of the local culture, making the holiday fun an education at the same time. Excursions include a tour of the local markets, a visit to the botanical gardens and an eye-opening visit to a local school and the chance to play with the local children. Considering that some visiting children will miss the odd day of school while they're in Vanuatu, activities like this are a great experience and definitely something they can share with their class at show-and-tell when they get back home. The icing on the cake? The whole family can make the most of the many free activities around the resort such as native arts and crafts, water sports, golf, tennis and other staff run games.

Boutique family luxury

Kids club fun at the Holiday Inn

Holiday Inn. A fun family playground Around three years ago the Holiday Inn underwent a top-to-bottom multi-million dollar transformation. From the rooms to the lobby to the conference facilities, no stone was unturned in this major refurbishment. For children that meant a superb pool area down by the lagoon, and in particular the “kids only” pool with giant cascading water buckets. Of course, mum and dad don't miss out either, with a great poolside bar and a gym they can enjoy, along with a wonderful day spa. There is a good choice of restaurants and bars, and an expanded kids' club to serve children and their parents. A host of scheduled activities are held at various times during the day, such as fish feeding, basket weaving and beach soccer. The restaurant opens early in the evening to give children a chance to eat and have enough time to go back to the kids' club until it shuts at 8 or 9pm. This gives parents a bit of breathing space to sit down and enjoy a nice, quiet dinner by themselves. On top of that, babysitting services are available for children under three years of age.

Le Lagon. Let the games begin Along with Iririki and the Holiday Inn, Le Lagon is considered one the “big three” resorts when it comes to catering for children and older kids. Day-to-day action is guaranteed at the Funtastik Blong Kids Club which is free for kids aged from three all the way up to 16. Needless to say there are a huge variety of activities on offer. Think cooking classes, bonfire singalongs, beach Olympics, badge making, musical games, soccer, t-shirt painting crazy crab races and much, much more. Add in some great facilities like a cinema, dedicated children’s pool and electronic goodies like PS3 games and you got the recipe for a fun-filled family getaway.

If you have children five years and over and would prefer staying in a boutique style of accommodation, The Terraces is a stylish option. Their two-bedroom apartments are spread over two levels, with living, dining and a full kitchen downstairs, opening out to a private pool and outdoor living zone. The second bedroom (for the kids) connects at the rear of the living room and upstairs mum and dad have the master bedroom with stunning views over the lagoon. Add a floodlit tennis court, gym and main pool and everyone is sure to be happy.

Keep the children active Yes, you can bring the family to Vanuatu and stay within the bounds of your resort. However, you'd be missing out on the true essence of these beautiful islands. Vanuatu has such a wide variety of activities on offer and many of these experiences are suitable for children. One of the classic not-to-be-missed family experiences is a visit to the Mele Cascades. The Mele Cascades Waterfall is a series of rock pools, winding through cool lush tropical rainforest. At the top is the spectacular falls cascading down over 50m to the rocks below. Tour company Evergreen Tours are the local experts and they can pick you up from your hotel for the 20 minute bus ride which takes you past local villages and schools. At the Mele Cascades a guide will take you through the rainforest, plus they will give you an insight into the local culture and way of life. At the waterfall, you can step right under the water or take a cooling dip in the rock pools. If time allows you’ll also be able to take in the panoramic views over Mele Bay and Hideaway Island.

Magic on Mele Bay If you’d like to stay a little off the beaten track, Island Magic Resort is the perfect spot to set up the family. Only 10 minutes from the international airport and 15 minutes from downtown Port Vila, this charming little resort on the edge of Mele Bay is nestled amongst tropical trees and gardens. Needless to say this peaceful location is super relaxed! Along with the ocean – front swimming pool and kayaking and snorkelling off the shoreline reef, Island Magic has twobedroom bungalows that sleep up to five guests ie, mum, dad and three kids. They also come with a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, stove, gas oven and refrigerator/freezer. The icing on the cake is a location that’s just a few minutes from popular attractions - the Mele Cascades, Jungle Zipline, Wet n Wild Zorb and Summit Gardens.

The apartment comes with a kitchen that is fully equipped with everything a family needs to cater for themselves. Cots, baby baths and high chairs are available and there's a babysitting service for when it's time to get away for a bit.

Up, up and away Let’s face it. Kids love superheroes! And in Port Vila they’ll have the chance to make their superhero dreams come true with the Vila Flyboard. This unique invention is powered by a jet ski from an umbilical cord. Once strapped in, most people will get the knack of flying after a 10 minute instructed lesson and from there it’s up to you to fly like superman!

A birds eye view If you feel like giving the children a real treat, why not take them for a helicopter trip over Port Vila, its harbour and the surrounding coast. If you're staying in Port Vila, all you need to do is make your way to the booking office of Vanuatu Helicopters, located harbourside by the Nambawan Cafe next to the craft markets right in the middle of town. The helicopter itself operates off a floating pontoon in the harbour. Vanuatu Helicopters offer four set scenic flights at varying prices. A good place to start is the Best of Efate tour, a spectacular 20 minute flight that takes you over Mele Bay, past the Cascade Falls, across to Havannah Harbour, over the amazing reef formations off Lelepa Island and then back again. Chances are you’ll spot some dugong sunning themselves in the shallow waters below. With a variety of tours on offer, you can simply choose the one that fits your time frame and budget, right up to the half-day adventures like their amazing Ambrym Volcano tour.

Hideaway Island. A different kind of mail For a generation that's grown up on computers, the internet and everything else electronic, Vanuatu offers kids a unique way to communicate - the underwater post off Hideaway Island. Just a 10-minute drive and two-minute boat ride from Port Vila, Hideaway makes for a fun family day trip, and of course it's famous for being the world's only underwater post office. This laidback little resort has long been a popular spot with divers, who have easy access to an amazing underwater wall that drops 100 metres down, but is only 100 metres from the shore. Hideaway also lies in the middle of a marine sanctuary, making for an abundance of sea creatures and colourful coral for mum, dad and the family to explore. Snorkelling and diving gear can be hired on the island and the restaurant is a great place to fill hungry tummies.

Exclusively for adults and located just 30 minutes drive from Port Vila, the Havannah is an oasis of tranquility and your perfect romantic retreat. With only 17 luxurious villas set amidst elegantly landscaped gardens, you can be assured privacy and personalized service, Havannah style.

Vanuatu Jungle Zipline. Family flying The lush rainforests of Vanuatu are amazing landscapes to walk through, but imagine getting an adrenalin-pumping birds-eye view from four stories up. That's what you get with the actionpacked. Jungle Zipline adventure half-day tour. You'll be strapped securely into your safety harness and zip through lush, cool treetops, with stunning views across Mele Bay and Port Vila Harbour. You'll cross an 80 metre-high canyon, wobble across two suspension bridges and return high above a waterfall. Sound breathtaking? It most certainly is, and it’s suitable for people of any age. Vanuatu Jungle Zipline has had clients as young as six and as old as 70. The crew will pick you up from any hotel in Port Vila and all you need to bring is some closed toe shoes or reef shoes, insect repellant, a camera, and clothing suitable to wear a harness.

Tanna. Explosive family fun For families with older children, making the effort to get over to Tanna Island can offer a variety of experiences few will ever forget. Home to just over 30,000 people, Tanna is a place where visitors can swim in underwater caves, snorkel some the best coral in Vanuatu, ride through the jungle on horseback, visit secret waterfalls and experience a culture that continues to live by its age-old traditions. However, its biggest drawcard remains Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible live volcanoes, where four-wheel-drive vehicles can get to within about a 10-minute walk from the edge of the crater. This impressive natural attraction is one of the most popular in Vanuatu, and it's a sight not to be missed. Ash-laden smoke has smothered the surrounding landscape, creating a scene that's like something from another planet. Like any volcano, the level of explosive activity varies, but it's always best to view Mount Yasur at dusk and into the night, when the red-hot magma makes its own fireworks display against the dark sky. If you think children get excited on Guy Fawkes Day, multiply that by 1000 times!

Sandboard down a live volcano If going up and taking a look inside Mount Yasur is fun, how about jumping on a board and riding the sandy slope. The guys at Tanna Tours Volcano Sandboarding will take you on this unique adventure. Controlling your speed is fairly straightforward - lean back to go faster and lean forward to slow down. You may have the odd wipeout, but it's all good, safe family fun.

Feeding the family Sometimes it seems like kids are always hungry – quite possibly because they are! Well, fear not, because the food in Vanuatu is very good. The beef on Santo is considered world-class and the fresh seafood is amazing. Add in the French influence and a fusion of Pacific flavours and you have a holiday destination that can serve up something that's just a bit different from the normal family fare. And if your children are fussy eaters, not to worry! Plenty of places serve up classic dishes for less adventurous children.

A few places to take the family: Mangoes Restaurant Saffron risotto served with fresh calamari, prawns and green peas and fresh herbs. Poulet fish wrapped in banana leaves with ginger, coconut milk and herbs. Mango prawns sauteed in garlic butter and served with sweet banana salsa. A meal here is a must.

The Waterfront Bar and Grill The Waterfront Bar and Grill is one of Port Vila's classic spots and there's no better place for families to kick back. The restaurant/bar opens out onto the marina where yachts, launches and charter boats are moored. On the menu is everything from steak to ribs, salads and Mexican, but seafood is the hero here. We're talking coconut crab, Tahitian fish and a mouthwatering lobster mornay that sits over a bed of rice which is probably more to mum and dad's liking.

Kanpai If the kids are fans of Japanese food, they'll love Kanpai. The atmosphere is super-relaxed and the food is beautiful. The chefs use the fresh local seafood to create melt-in-your mouth sushi and sashimi, plus there’s all your regular Japanese dishes like teriyaki chicken and tempura. The dining deck also offers picturesque views over the harbour and back into town. For sunset dining be there about five-ish.

Love is in the air Wedding bliss in the Cook Islands By Matt Taylor

Planning a wedding comes with numerous decisions. And one of the big ones is where the wedding will actually take place. Needless to say the options are endless. Do you stay close to home? Do you go further afield? Do you choose a sentimental place? Or do you make it extra special and fly away to a tropical paradise where just about every detail is taken care of before you even arrive? If the tropical option comes out on top, the Cook Islands is the perfect place to make your dream wedding come true.

The Cook Islands have long been a popular place to get married and it’s no surprise why. The “Cooks” are exquisitely beautiful, the locals will welcome you with open arms and the laid back island atmosphere is guaranteed to charm anyone. Couples-to-be also have a myriad of choices at their fingertips. The main island of Rarotonga has more than 50 eateries, there are plenty of activities to keep the wedding party entertained before and after the main event, and there is a huge variety of accommodation to suit most tastes and budgets. If you feel like going a bit further afield, Aitutaki provides a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop that is only 45 minutes flight away. While the stunning location looks after itself, there’s more to a great island wedding than just sending out invites and jumping on the plane.

Muri Beach

Every couple wants to know that their special day will turn out just as they’ve planned and that means getting a local professional to organise everything from the food and beverages to the photography. Because the Cook Islands have had so many years catering to the wedding market, it’s easy finding an experienced wedding team – such as the planner, celebrant, florist and hair and makeup artists. On top of that, many Cook Island resorts provide can provide these services with in-house staff or partners who they bring in for the special occasion. In fact many wedding packages will include a personal planner who will liaise with the would-be couple from start to finish. They’ll organise the exact location, the celebrant or minister, transfers to the Registrar of Marriages, a floral bouquet and all the other essentials. Properties like Manuia Beach Resort will tailor make a wedding to suit exactly what the client wants. They also make sure that no two weddings are alike. Each wedding is unique and very carefully planned out. No bride and groom will see another wedding happening during their stay and it will be customised to their special requirements. Manuia’s Beaches Restaurant and Bar has recently received a makeover our sand floor restaurant and opens right up to the beach where guests can enjoy the stunning sunsets! Another resort boasting the perfect location for a special day is the Crown Beach Resort and Spa. Located on the sunset coast of Rarotonga with 100 metres of prime sandy beach and stunning Pacific views, weddings here are very special occasions - whether it’s an intimate affair or a more formal occasion with lots of family and friends. Crown Beach also offer a number of wedding packages. Each one is designed to suit a range of budgets, starting with the Simplicity Package for those who want to tie the knot barefoot on the beach, through to their top-of-the-line Royal Package where nothing is spared. For example, you can have local drummers, dancers and singers entertain your guests or just about anything for that matter. With the wedding celebrations over, there’s only one thing left to do – have a wonderful honeymoon. And of course one of the best things about getting married in paradise is you can stay exactly where you are, which might mean staying in exactly the same place you had the wedding or moving to a couples-only resort.

The Rarotongan Beach Resort and Spa is another popular spot for weddings and has had couples from all over the world choosing their no-fuss wedding ceremony on Aro’a Beach. (Aro’a Beach sits next to Aro’a Lagoon - which appropriately translates to Lagoon of Love). Married couples choosing to renew their vows are also becoming frequent guests of the resort and with a such a spectacular setting who could blame them. At the Pacific Resorts, who have locations on Aitutaki and Raratonga, couples-to-be also enjoy a first-class service from a specialist wedding events team. These wedding professionals can attend to every detail and make sure couples, their families and their friends have a day they will never forget. If a boutique resort is preferred, Rumours Luxury Villas and Spa on Muri Beach is a wonderful choice. Rumours offers elegant surroundings and world class luxury right on Muri Beach. Once again they provide a wedding co-ordinator and because it’s a smaller property there’s an opportunity to book out the entire resort for an exclusive and totally private wedding experience.

scented candles, chocolates and sparkling wine, one hour couples massage and a super romantic private island picnic. World famous for its breathtaking coral lagoon, Aitutaki is also honeymoon heaven for couples. As you’d expect, snorkelling and boat trips exploring the lagoon are a must-do for visitors and there are some interesting sights on land, including local marae and some fascinating coralwalled churches. Having said that, the best thing about Aitutaki is being able to do absolutely nothing. Sleep in, swim, snooze in the afternoon, kick back with a cocktail, on Aitutaki there is no rush. This is a place to relax and enjoy each others company, which is just what this special part of the world was created for. Quite simply, you couldn’t hope to find a more romantic part of the world to celebrate your lifelong commitment, but you certainly don’t need that as an excuse to enjoy these islands. The Cook Islands are about as far from hustle and bustle as you can get. Add that to some of the South Pacific’s most spectacular natural scenery and you have a true recipe for romance.

Honeymoon heaven

Signing is simple

If you get married in the Cook Islands, there’s no need to go anywhere for the honeymoon - you can simply stay where you are! And if you get married in New Zealand then coming to Cook Islands for the honeymoon is a great choice, too!

Getting married in the Cook Islands is also easy from a legal point of view. As a general rule most South Pacific nations require a 30 day wait before the marriage, but in the Cook Islands couples can marry three days after landing in the country. If that isn’t quite quick enough, couples in a particular hurry can pay a small fee to waive this residency requirement!

There are some fantastic deals to be had for honeymooning couples. Muri Beach Club Hotel on Rarotonga has over $1000 worth of extra value for couples who have married in the past six months (a marriage certificate needs to be provided), when they book a minimum of five nights. This includes lovely luxuries such as a flower heart on the bed on arrival, a gift pack of aroma

Otherwise the legal side of a Cook Islands marriage is straightforward. The only paperwork needed are birth certificates (in English), original passports and any "Decree Absolute" (divorce documents), if this applies.

Enjoy pure indulgence at Crown Beach Resort & Spa, Rarotonga’s finest full service luxury boutique resort and true Rarotongan service. Set in 5 acres of lush tropical gardens nesting 36 stand-alone villas, a state-of-the-art Conference/Functions Centre, onsite Spa, onsite Dive Centre, two on-site restaurants & bars, a cocktail lounge & gymnasium, an expansive white sandy beach, surreal turquoise lagoon, beautiful waterfall mineral pool and spectacular sunsets.

Club Raro is born again by Amanda Platt

In late January a group of Kiwi travel agents and wholesalers left for the Cook Islands to see a superbly refurbished Club Raro, k sample a selection of Rarotonga’s finest sights and of course soa up some warm tropical sun. As a three-star resort sitting on the beautiful northern coast of Rarotonga, it would be fair to say the Club Raro Resort hasn’t always matched its stunning surroundings. The property has traditionally been popular with a young budget-conscious travel market. But over the years the resort had become tired and in need of refurbishment. Step forward to 2015 and a stunning year-long makeover has totally transformed Club Raro Resort. 57 existing rooms have been refreshed from top to bottom, including new runners and cushions, new curtains, new linens, new flat screen TV’s, new airconditioners, new beds, new lighting, new outdoor chairs, new art work, refurbished bathrooms and freshly painted walls and ceilings! In other words, just about everything is fresh and new. Along with this comprehensive refurbishment has come the addition of 10 brand new self-contained studio apartments that feature flat screen TV’s, spacious bathrooms, airconditioning, new beds and kitchenette that come complete with a microwave and oven/cook top. “The improvements at Club Raro have lifted the overall standard tremendously. The old Club Raro is gone, the new Club Raro will amaze people who have been here in the past and will target a broader market of travellers who are looking for a good value holiday with quality accommodation, great food and service, and the lovely lad-back Cook Islands atmosphere,” says Club Raro’s New Zealand Representative, Raumati Barbara from Coconuts Travel Marketing. I had the absolute pleasure of staying in a Lagoon Front room, which was a very spacious and came with a large ensuite. Fridge, jug, tea and coffee were all included. The rooms also had a light, bright and vibrant Pacific feel, with frangipani cushions and beautiful canvases on walls. In short the rooms were immaculate. As any traveller will testify, food can make or break a holiday. With this in mind, Club Raro didn’t just refresh the accommodation side of things. Their Palms Restaurant received a new kitchen and the restaurant itself was fitted out with new dining tables and chairs, new cutlery and crockery and freshly painted walls. And the food? The pork belly was one of the best I have ever eaten. And the continental breakfast and full cooked breakfasts were delicious too! All in all Club Raro now represents exceptional value for money. Plus you’re only five mins from town and ten minutes away from Muri Lagoon. There is a motto here. Arrive as a guest, leave as a friend, which is perfectly apt. You do feel like part of a family when you leave as everyone is so friendly and willing to make your stay special.

Fallen tree transformed into kids house Some years ago a very old rain tree was knocked over in a cyclone – but despite the battering, it continued to grow and thrive. The team at JeanMichel Cousteau Resort decided it would be the perfect place to build a new kids treehouse. So, using local sustainable timber and a design that blended into the fallen tree (without harming it), the new kids creation came to life. The design incorporated multiple access points, a timber slide exit and various swings. The treehouse is surrounded by park benches built from fallen coconut trees and a timber seesaw - all made by the resort's craftsman. Needless to say the kids love it and it’s a wonderful addition to the resort’s teenage programme (13yrs +), its 6-12 year activity programme and the kids club facility that caters for 0-12 year olds.

The Warwick – where kids are everything Down on the Coral Coast, The Warwick Resort’s KARE Club, translates as "Kid’s are everything". Needless to say it has everything a kid could want and everything a kid could need! Open daily for children three to 12 years. The KARE Club has all sorts of activities like handicraft making, fish feeding, sandcastle building, crab hunting, seashell collecting, face painting, treasure hunting and kids cooking classes. The Kids' Club is free and it’s open from 9am right up until 9pm. On top of that kids eat free which is a real bonus. This includes breakfast at the Bula Brasserie, lunch off the kids menu at the Lagoon Bar and Grill Restaurant or Bula Brasserie and dinner from the kids menu or buffet from the Bula Brasserie and from the Wicked Walu Kids Menu. Lucky kids indeed!

Mantaray Island Resort – a water wonderland Just a three hour high speed catamaran from Nadi, Mantaray Island Resort in the Yasawa Islands has just won its third successive AON Fiji Excellence in Tourism award as Fiji’s Best Budget accommodation. Now in its 10th year, Mantaray started as a backpacker resort. Over this past decade the resort has slowly edged its way along the beach adding new styles of accommodation to cater to a changing demand. And now many of these original backpackers are returning with their own families. While Mantaray isn’t a family resort in the typical sense - it doesn’t have a kids club, there’s no crèche and there’s no children’s playground – but it does have an amazing variety of activities to cater for families that want some serious fun. Along with a fantastic reef for guests to explore on their own, the dive team also offer guided snorkelling trips pointing out the fun interactive things to play with on the reef, as well as the things you definitely don’t want to mess with! And if you do need some quiet time, or perhaps want to go for a dive with you partner, babysitters can be arranged. There’s a stack of kayaks to play on, as well as guided kayaking trips. And all of the activities team also hold a bronze medallion in surf lifesaving, just to make sure everyone’s safe and sound.

New at Radisson Blu Chantara Thai

Chantara Thai restaurant is the newest addition to Radisson Blu after renovations were completed in February. Meaning “Moon Water” in Thai, this restaurant is set on the lobby level and gives diners a panoramic view of the resort’s waterfall and landscaped gardens. Thai inspired, the restaurant will serve an elegant a la carte breakfast, lunch and a smart casual evening dining experience. Artisan organic locally grown produce and herbs will be used throughout the menu. A new Thai chef from Bangkok will take control of the kitchen - Mr Pitchayapon Thiptham or as he is known, Mickey, has worked around the globe from Bangkok, to the USA and recently Switzerland – and always specialising in Thai cuisine. Advertorial

New renovation takes Vomo to the next level Like most properties that operate at the very highest level of luxury, VOMO Island Resort is not one to sit on its laurels. And so this March, the iconic private island retreat has re-opened after an extensive renovation that will help cement its place among the South Pacific’s elite holiday experiences. Located just a short, scenic 15-minute flight from Nadi, VOMO is home to 30 accommodations including seven Hillside and 19 Beachfront Villas, two Beachfront Retreats, plus the three bedroom Royal Villa and a grand four bedroom Residence that sleeps up to eight. All were at the heart of this major renovation which included brand new bathrooms with luxuriously appointed amenities, plus custom made fittings and furnishings were installed in all villas. VOMO’s two Beach Retreats are brand new. Each one featuring secluded private decks, luxurious outdoor bathtubs and showers, and sleek modern interiors with stylish island accents. The result is a truly sumptuous environment where families or couples can enjoy first-class luxury with absolute privacy. In addition, VOMO also has exciting plans to develop two new luxury private residences to sit alongside the two they already have. These residences will create a whole new level of luxury on the island - these are scheduled to be unveiled at the end of 2015, which agents should keep in mind for top end travel customers. “VOMO is committed to delivering the best of luxury hospitality and to remain at the top of our game in an ever increasingly competitive market,” says General Manager, Mark Leslie. “These current renovations reflect our unending pursuit to exceed our guests expectations and create a relaxing, indulgent and effortless vacation experience ensuring guests will return again and again.” Along with the accommodation upgrade, visitors will also reap the rewards of improvements to VOMO’s already worldrenowned culinary experience. This includes a new state-of-the art kitchen being installed in the main house, a new open-air show-kitchen will debut at The Rocks Bar, along with a new bar and deck to complement the signature cocktails at this stunning venue. This live food theatre will also emphasise healthy grilling with international influences from Japanese Robata to Tandoori ovens, and a Raw Bar offering delicious local specialties from the Pacific Rim. The adults-only Rocks Bar will be open on selected evenings throughout the week for dining and each evening for sunset cocktails and complimentary canapés. All these culinary changes have been made under the watchful eye of Executive Chef Erwin Joven. Erwin has created a la carte menus using the freshest available ingredients, including freshly picked organic produce from the resort’s own organic herb and vegetable garden. On top of that, guests enjoy a fine variety of creations during their stay as these exceptional dining options change each and every day. While all these wonderful changes illustrate VOMO’s commitment to continual improvement, some things will always stay the same. The sheer beauty of the shimmering blue waters and stunning powder soft sand is one of nature’s finest productions. It’s something guests come back for time and time again. Your classic lying on the beach style of holiday is assured. However, VOMO has a huge selection of water-based activities for those who want a bit more action. You can try your hand at paddle boarding, go on a kayak adventure, sail a Hobie cat, tame the breeze on a windsurfer and of course there is some wonderful snorkelling straight off the beach. If that sounds like a bit too much effort, you can always book in at VOMO’s serene spa for some serious pampering. Whether it’s a luxurious massage, body cleanse or facial you’re guaranteed to leave as stress-free as a person can possibly get. Very few Pacific Island resorts can match the exceptional holiday experience on offer at VOMO Island Resort. And these recent changes have just added an extra dimension to the exceptional quality that has been here all along.

Do you have clients travelling with children? TAKE UP VOMO’S SPECIAL RE-OPENING OFFER To celebrate their March re-opening VOMO are offering a Complimentary Baby Butler service for up to 8 hours per day per family for children from 6 months of age upwards. Toberua Island Resort – heaven for hands-on families

Alex to develop Musket Cove sales network Alex Raicebe is the new Sales and Marketing Manager at Musket Cove. His most recent position was in Sydney as National Sales Manager at Captain Cook Cruises, and now he joins Musket to lead the sales team in reservations and events. He will be specialising on the Australian, New Zealand and North America markets, together with local partners.

While many Fijian resorts have the traditional kids’ club set-up, Toberua Island Resort likes to do things a bit differently. The resort is very familyfriendly, however, they do cater to more active hands-on families, who choose to stay at Toberua because they want to spend quality time with their kids. And there is no shortage of activities to choose from, with coconut weaving, sand sculpting competitions, fish feeding, hand line fishing, crab races, snorkelling (with the adults), PADI courses for children 10 years+ and kayak races.

"The addition of Alex to our sales team further strengthens our position in Fiji's tourism sector and his comprehensive understanding of the industry will prove invaluable in communicating our resort's upgrades and enhancements," noted Josephine Smith - Moffat, Managing Director. Before joining Musket Cove, Alex’s career spanned several years in tourism. Including Fiji Visitors Bureau, a Pacific specialist with a Sydney based wholesaler, before embarking on a rewarding career as national sales manager for Captain Cook Cruises.

On top of that, Toberua has an early children’s mealtime and a children’s menu, a nanny service and babysitting and a unique children’s spa package complete with facials, hand and feet spa treatments and hair braids!

At Musket Cove you’ll find the pace of life smooth and unhurried. What sets Musket apart is space, with 400 acres of rolling hills and palm fringed beaches to explore.

Tahiti

Island Insights with Natasha Henry, South Pacific Consultant, Infinity Holidays In this issue we give Natasha Henry from Infinity Holidays a quick quiz about the stunning islands of Tahiti. Which of Tahiti’s 118 islands have you been to? Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Tahaa, Huahine, Maupiti, Tetiaroa, Fakarava

Describe the destination in one word: (This is hard - One word is not enough) I'll go with majestic.

One key piece of advice to agents when they have an inquiry? Try and sway the clients towards travel dates which will allow them to make use of Earlybird and Earlybird/Combo deals. Being able to book accommodation three to six months in advance will more often than not save your client around $500 which will help in lowering the total package price and hopefully secure the booking! And of course, become a Tiare Agent!

Favourite sightseeing activity to do I can't stop myself from getting onto any shark and ray snorkelling tours in Bora Bora. Being only metres away from black tip sharks and feeling friendly rays on your skin is exhilarating and nerve racking at the same time! It's incredible and ending the tour with a beautiful meal with a view of the stunning Mount Otemanu is a memory you’ll never forget.

Work begins at Hilton Bora Bora Renovations are now underway at the five-star, 120-room Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa – an award-winning resort that first opened its doors in 2003. The new design will feature an allnew category for eight rooms called the Sunset Pool Overwater Villas. Each of these new style rooms will feature a retractable wall in the bedroom that unveils a lagoon view from both the bed and the bath – a true Polynesian “flatscreen” experience! The new rooms will also have private plunge pools on the decks, bed and bathrooms facing the lagoon, larger terraces and sundecks, catamaran-style nets over the water (for a unique way to relax and soak in your surroundings), double marble vanity with bowl sinks and modern, rectangular tubs and slate floors in the bathrooms. And on top of all that - windows in the floor to watch the tropical fish swim by.

Tahiti Pearl set for major upgrade Sitting on one of the most beautiful beaches in Tahiti, the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort, formerly the Radisson Plaza Resort, will undergo new upgrades and improvements in their rooms and suites, spa, restaurant and overall guest services as the current ownership takes the property under private management. “The changes we plan to make will create greater value and enhance the overall guest experience at the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort by integrating more local flavours, ingredients and expanded French Polynesian -inspired dishes at our restaurant, as well as upgrading our guest rooms and suites along with the spa and improving the overall quality of service,” says Thierry Barbion, Founder and President of The Barbion Group – the resort's owner.

Photo: Gergoire Le Bacon

“By enhancing our operations, we will be in a strong position to build synergies with our sister properties, the Four Seasons Bora Bora and Le Tahaa with the newly refashioned Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort suites serving as the gateway to the other island's for travellers and honeymooners alike,” he added.

Solomon Islands

Fatboys Resort – a Solomon’s secret The improbably named Fatboys Resort, bar and restaurant is situated at the end of a 100 metre-long jetty atop the crystal clear waters of Mbabanga Island, an eight minute boat ride from bustling Gizo, the provincial capital of the Western Solomons. For those who know the name "Fatboys" is derived from the character, Joe from The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. Joe – the ‘fat boy’ consumes great quantities of food and constantly falls asleep in any situation at any time of day and that is pretty much what Fatboys Resort is all about – that is when its guests aren’t fishing, snorkelling, surfing, kayaking, visiting the local village or heading off to the many night time attractions of Gizo, an eight minute starlit ride away. In a nutshell, the Fatboys lifestyle revolves around drinking, eating, sleeping and making every conceivable effort to avoid work! The resort boasts a number of secluded bungalows, including a family bungalow complete with kitchen and one of the most romantic honeymoon suites to be found in the South Pacific. Add to that a quality restaurant serving some of the finest seafood to be found in this idyllic destination, a lively bar and the best pool table in the Western Solomons. www.solomonislandsfatboys.com.au

New PM to get right behind tourism Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau CEO, Josefa "Jo" Tuamoto has “warmly welcomed” newly elected Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manassah Sogavare’s pledge to prioritise the country’s tourism industry In one of his first addresses since being elected to the role, the Prime Minister said that previous governments had overlooked the potential the tourism sector offers the country. Those governments, he said, had placed more focus on the country’s unsustainable logging and mining sectors, the so called "sunset" industries, and there was a need to address and implement strategies in other sectors where the Solomon Islands was naturally strong.

Pack Ya Bags launches Solomon’s product range Continuing its trend of offering reasons for travel based on a client’s interests, Pack ya Bags Travel Wholesale has produced a dedicated Solomon Islands brochure featuring a wide range of destinations and activities from adventure to just relaxing the time away.

Solomon Islands

The new Pack Ya Bags Solomon Islands brochure highlights accommodation options together with many activities. While many of the islands are isolated, the destination really does offer that unique point of difference over other destinations and travel between the islands is relatively straightforward with forward planning. Pack Ya Bags can organise tours for individuals and small groups for many varied reasons such as fabulous diving on wrecks or reef, surfing, fishing, and educational visits. Marine studies and cultural studies are just two examples. Learn to cook the islander way, or create and work with artists. Much is down to your client’s imagination. You may not have considered a honeymoon in the Solomon Islands but this is a perfect location for clients wanting to be alone and spoiled a little. Be Brave..... Be Adventurous

The brochure outlines many of the features that make these islands unique and aims to help with your planning and information. Email ray@packyabags.com for copies of the brochure or to organise training or a presentation on these remote, unique and "last frontier" islands in the South Pacific.

Solomon Airlines to commence Sydney service from June To make it even easier for Kiwis to visit the Solomon Islands, Solomon Airlines will commence operation of a direct Sydney-Honiara service from June 2, 2015. Scheduled to operate ex-Honiara on Mondays and ex-Sydney on Tuesdays, the airline will herald the new service with special introductory fares inclusive of in-flight meals and entertainment plus a generous 30 kilo baggage allowance. Solomon Airlines will utilise its Airbus A320 on the new route, which has been specifically timed to offer seamless flight linkage between several New Zealand cities. The new flight schedule will operate as follows: Monday - Flight IE 710 Honiara-Sydney Depart Honiara 1515 Arrive Sydney 1830 Tuesday – Flight IE 711 Sydney-Honiara Depart Sydney 0930 Arrive Honiara 1445

“The tourism sector is one of them,” he said. Welcoming the Prime Minister’s comments, Tuamoto said the national tourist office fully supported his commitment and vision in promoting and developing tourism. “The Prime Minister’s recognition of the potential the tourism sector offers to the Solomon Islands is extremely timely,” Tuamoto said. “We are looking forward to working with the new government to push the tourism agenda even harder, regionally and globally, to realise the true potential tourism has for the Solomon Islands.” The SIVB’s charter is to see the tourism sector firmly in place as the country’s prime source of foreign exchange earnings within the next 10 years.

KAUA‘I. Hawai‘i’s Island of Discovery The beauty of a Hawaiian Islands holiday is there’s something for everyone. It’s really just a matter of choosing the island that suits your particular style and pace. If that means really getting away from it all, Kaua’i is the obvious island of choice. Sitting at the top of the Hawaiian chain, Kaua’i is the oldest of the islands and that’s reflected in the sheer beauty of the landscape. Lush rainforests thrive, valleys and mountains have been weathered into the most spectacular forms, rivers snake their way across the countryside, waterfalls burst with life, and there’s even a Pacific version of the Grand Canyon. It’s no wonder Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Carribean were filmed against this backdrop. The mountainous interior and sheer cliffs of the North Coast has made it impossible to build a road circling the island – in fact, only around 10 percent of the island is accessible by car. This may sound like a hindrance, but it’s actually a blessing as it means that much of this beautiful countryside is reserved for hikers, bikers and kayakers. The 18km long Kalalau trail along the Nāpali Coast is Kaua’i’s most famous. It runs from Ke‘e Beach and goes through deep green valleys and along towering sea cliffs, before ending in the Kalalau Valley. Most hikers will break the journey into two sections with an overnight camp at the halfway point. The steep terrain does make this a real challenge, however, the pay-off is a lifetime of memories. The other way to see Kaua’i is by helicopter. In fact, taking a mind-blowing aerial tour of Kaua’i should be compulsory. With fewer than 70,000 residents on Kaua‘i, the pace of life couldn’t be more relaxed. And because tourism development arrived here later, the visitor experience remains authentic. Indeed, this is a place to enjoy the laid back local lifestyle surrounded by the glory of a natural wonderland.

Kaua‘i was named Best Island in the US & Canada in 2014 by readers of Global Traveller

Nāpali Coast is “Top of the World” TripAdvisor recently recognised the majestic Nāpali Coast for its unparalleled beauty by naming it as one of the top 'Awe-inspiring Places Around the World.' The results are based on feedback from fans and followers of TripAdvisor’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, and TripAdvisor’s destination experts.

Princeville Makai Golf Club by sunset A new tour offers a unique and fun way for guests to experience the scenic vistas of the famed Makai Course at sunset - without having to swing a club! Situated on Kaua‘i’s spectacular North Shore, set between ocean and mountains, the Makai Golf Course boasts an extraordinarily beautiful setting, so much so it was named one of the “Top five Great Golf Settings in the US” by National Geographic Traveler in 2011. Guests can follow the cart paths meandering through the 18 holes, stop and linger to take photos wherever they wish and watch the sun set over Hanalei Bay. Reservations can be made at the Princeville Makai Golf Club.

Tours to temp the tastebuds Food tour specialists, Tasting Kaua‘i, have introduced two newly created food tours for the best bites on the North Shore and South Shore. The North Shore Kaua‘i Food Tour is a flavoursome adventure of off the beaten track establishments, while the South Shore Tour is a celebration of street food inspired by Hawai‘i’s diverse cultures. Both tours also let you meet and talk to Kaua‘i farmers, chefs and artisans. Offered for US$120 for a four hour tour, each features up to six tasting stops. A portion of the proceeds from all tours benefits the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch. www.tastingkauai.com.

Take a walk on the wildside Kaua‘i is known as the garden island and there’s no better way to experience its natural wonders than at The National Tropical Botanical Garden. Just after opening their new Biodiversity Trail at its flagship McBryde Garden on Kaua‘i’s South Shore, the garden also revealed its newest addition – a stick sculpture created by internationally renowned environmental artist Patrick Dougherty. Woven completely from plant materials gathered from the garden, the domed structure is 8m high and 8m wide, so visitors can venture inside. The new Birthday Palace celebrates the 50th anniversary of the nonprofit National Tropical Botanical Garden. Along with the McBryde Garden, Kaua‘i visitors can also take in the equally glorious Allerton Garden, also on the south shore. And the Limahuli Garden and Preserve on the north shore. www.ntbg.org.

New location for Kalapaki Joe’s Local Kaua‘i sports bar group Kalapaki Joe's has recently opened its third Kaua‘i location at the Waimea Plantation Cottages. The restaurant offers a selection of Hawai‘i-inspired appetisers, entrees and signature cocktails, in addition to Kaua‘i’s largest draft beer selection.

Time to go golfing Kaua‘I is considered one of America’s best golfing destinations and the Po‘ipū Bay Golf Course, situated on Kaua‘i’s south shore, are now offering a Tee for Two programme designed specifically for couples who want to enjoy an afternoon round on the course - just the two of them - at a reduced price. Tee For Two allows couples to tee off from 1pm to 1.50pm any day of the week and play an 18-hole round together as a twosome, based on course availability. The rate is US$135 (plus tax) per person (standard rate is $240). The rate includes rental clubs, if needed, featuring the course’s Callaway X Hot clubs. www.poipubaygolf.com

Currently undergoing a US$10 million renovation, The Kaua‘i Sands Hotel on the eastern Coast of Kaua‘i has been rebranded as the Kaua‘i Shores, an Aqua Hotel. The reinvigorated 200-room beachfront property will be part of the Aqua Hotels and Resorts brand offering a vibrant, resort-like experience with stylish guest areas and rooms, as well as upgraded services and amenities. www.aquaresorts.com

Tonga

Have a ball on horseback Horse trekking around Tonga’s ‘Eua Island is one of the best ways to explore the Kingdom of Tonga’s oldest island – which is believed to be over 40 million years old! Some of the best trekking in the South Pacific can be also found in ‘Eua’s National Park where trees such as the banyan (strangling fig tree) also known in Tonga as the ‘Ovava are believed to be over 800 years old. ‘Eua’s tropical rainforests also contain trees, birds and plants which can be found nowhere else in the world. It’s no wonder then that the island is becoming more popular as an eco-tourism destination. Horse trekking on ‘Eua has minimal impact on the island and is unlimited as you can trek through the bush, local villages and beaches. Children are more than welcome to try a bit of horse trekking. And don’t forget to visit the Rock Gardens where wild horses roam upon grassy plains and scattered rocks on the Southern Coast of ‘Eua. www.tongaholiday.com

Children’s White Sunday – a major May event The first Sunday of every May in Tonga and for Tongans all around the world, is a special Sunday church service dedicated to the children of Tonga called White Sunday or Fakame. Traditionally a Wesleyan Church event, it is now enjoyed by most children and families in the Tongan community all over the world, and it is now a national celebration throughout Tonga. Every young girl and boy wears their best white Sunday clothes and performs a Bible verse they have learnt with their Sunday school class to the entire congregation. This annual children’s day is then celebrated with a special Sunday feast which includes all the Tongan traditional foods such as roast pig, yam, and raw fish and of course treats for the children such as cake, ice-cream and confectionery. Tourists are more than welcome to attend Tonga’s Children’s Day festivities and it is a great way to get a fascinating insight into the local culture.

Snorkelling Tonga – unbelievable underwater Scattered across the great South Pacific Ocean, the Kingdom of Tonga is home to some of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs and marine life. Uncrowded and untouched, even more so is Tonga’s underwater tropical setting full of unique sea life just waiting to be explored. An incredible 500 species of reef-building coral make their home in this warm tropical ocean, the diversity of coral colours and forms is never-ending and snorkelling is a great way to experience the unspoilt nature of Tonga. For first time snorkellers there are plenty of guides around to assist you. The water temperature is warm all year round and there’s no need to even wear a wetsuit. It’s great that there is no complicated gear on your back, all you need is a snorkel, some flippers and away you go! Tonga is renowed for crystal clear waters, so make sure you pack your underwater camera for great imagery of a huge variety of tropical fish species and beautifully coloured coral. www.hakauadventures.com
