Making Memories.

Kids grow up so fast these days. One minute they’re toddlers, and the next minute they’re leaving high school! Which is why it’s so important to spend quality time with them while you can. One of the best ways to make these lifelong memories is by travelling together somewhere special. That’s what family holidays in the Pacific Islands are all about — going somewhere completely different, unplugging from the day-to-day back home, and cherishing those moments together.

Each of the islands we feature in Family Time has unique characteristics. But they are all home to spectacular natural environments that visiting families can immerse themselves in. We hope you enjoy the read. We also hope our ideas and insights help you make your holiday decision easier. After all, it may lead to an experience the family will never forget.

Family Tips

Stay sun safe.

A bad dose of sunburn can ruin any holiday. So make sure you’ve got a full kit of sun protection products to ward against the Pacific sun. Sunscreen, aftersun, hats etc. Long-sleeved rash shirts are also great for the kids when they’re in and out of the water all the time.

Kids meals.

When flying, remind your travel agent to order a kid’s meal. On most airlines they will get an activity pack and a nice little meal perfect for hungry little mouths.

Water toys.

Purchasing swimming goggles, floaties or inflatable rings from a resort shop can be pricey, so make sure you bring your necessary water toys with you.

Check the daily itinerary.

Almost every resort will have a schedule of free daily activities that the kids will love. So it’s really just a matter of checking what’s on, making a note of the time and remembering to be in the right place at the right time.

Family holidays can be exciting and challenging at the same time. The thought of moving children through airports and on planes can even make some parents quite anxious! So we’ve put together some handy hints to help you along the way.

First Aid.

Kids at play have slips, trips and scratches, so pack your usual antiseptic cream, antihistamine cream, Pamol and plasters.

Enough to make you scream?

When your baby cries on a plane, it’s natural to worry about upsetting other passengers. Just remember, many of your fellow passengers have been in the same situation themselves and are feeling your pain. So do what you can and don’t fret!

8 Pacific Family Time

Stroll on up.

If you have a baby or toddler in a stroller, most airlines will let you take the stroller to the departure gate - it saves carrying a little person all the way!

Water.

We always pack extra water for the kids and refill the bottles when we’ve cleared customs. It’s good to keep the kids hydrated from the start, the only down side - a few toilet visits!

Pack colouring-in and other activities.

With travel comes time spent sitting around. Whether that’s waiting for an airport transfer, waiting to board a plane or even just waiting for a meal to arrive. At these times, even the most patient of kids can start to get restless. So make sure you’re prepared. Pack a few activities to keep them occupied during wait times – colouring-in books and card games work a treat or whatever else their game of the moment is.

Remain calm.

Above all else - keep calm! It’s all worth it when they do their first bomb into the resort pool and come up with a smile from ear to ear.

Don’t cut it fine!

There’s nothing worse than rushing kids through a crowded airport. So give yourself ample time to check-in, clear customs and get to the gate.

Book seats at the front.

Spending ages standing in the line at passport control isn’t how you want to start your Pacific family getaway –Especially if the kids are getting restless. So try and book your airline seats as close to the front of the plane as possible. That way you’ll be out first and be near the front of the queue at immigration.

Pack snacks.

You never quite know when you’re going to hear “I’m hungry”. If you’re in-between meal times and just want to keep the wolf from the door, or there isn’t any food options nearby – having a supply of snacks can be a lifesaver.

Cut bag numbers.

In our family of five we try and pack light and then share suitcases - the less luggage you have to cart, the better.

Loving Local

COOK ISLANDS 10 Pacific Family Time

The Cook Islands are home to 15 islands, with Rarotonga and Aitutaki being the most popular picks for families after that classic island vibe. The scenery is pure South Pacific – deep green mountain backdrops, white sand, and blue lagoon waters. But the Cook Islands also provide families with a refreshing change from a run-of-the-mill resort holiday, where you check-in and don’t often leave.

Pacific Family Time 11 © ALISHA STREET - MY RAROTONGA

Family holidays in the Cook Islands are all about getting out and about, experiencing the local attractions alongside the locals themselves. The town of Avarua is Rarotonga’s commercial centre and a good place to kick off family sightseeing.

There are enough shops, cafés, and restaurants to keep everyone happy. For families with self-contained accommodation, there’s also a chance to stock up on food and drink. You’ll also find fascinating spots like the Para O Tane Palace and the National Museum. They provide a chance for the kids (and adults) to learn about the Cook Islands’ history and culture.

The main market is a great place to get a feel for local life. You can grab some fresh fruit and veggies or pick up some local crafts to take home. If tummies are rumbling, drop by Trader Jacks Bar and Grill by the water. The iconic establishment offers fabulous views, a full kids’ menu, and plenty of drink choices for the grown-ups.

Once families have explored Avarua, getting around the rest of the island is easy. There’s a road that circles the island, and it’s only

32km long, so you can drive around it in no time. But you’ll want to stop along the way because there’s plenty to see and do.

Scooters are always a popular mode of transport, but renting a car is better for families. You can also catch a local bus for a bit of an adventure. You’ll find lots of nice places to eat and drink as you explore, serving up tasty food including lots of fresh seafood.

The fresh fish sandwiches at The Moorings at Muri Beach (directly across the road from Muri Beachcomber) are delicious. Jill Stanton, the Kiwi-born owner, has been serving her legendary fresh fish sandwiches for over 20 years, and they never disappoint. Each Sunday, The Moorings brings in a live ukulele band – a fun way to spend an afternoon.

La Casita is another top spot to grab a bite. As the name suggests, it has a Mexican theme, but they also serve some yummy pizzas. It’s hard to pick out a single dish – order the fish tacos, chicken quesadilla, or pizza, and you are guaranteed to go home happy. It should also be noted that the prices are reasonable too. Very similar to what you’d expect at home, if not a little cheaper in some places.

Daily 11am to 3pm Includes: snorkelling gear, BBQ Lunch, island coconut husking and pareu tying show. Fun for all ages.

LAGOON ADVENTURES WITH CAPTAIN TAMA’S LAGOON CRUIZES

One of the most popular ways to explore Muri Lagoon is on a lagoon cruise with Captain Tama’s. The fun starts before you even hop on the glass-bottom boat, with singing, drumming, and ukulele playing giving guests a taste of the excitement to come. The Captain and crew are natural entertainers, keeping the laughs coming. The cruise includes a stop at a tiny motu, or atoll island in the lagoon, where a delicious barbecue lunch awaits on the beach.

You’ll also find plenty of fun activities. Ever wanted to climb a coconut tree? Now’s your chance! Want to learn how to husk a coconut or discover all the ways you can tie a sarong? It’s all part of the adventure. And of course, there’s heaps of time to snorkel in the lagoon, getting up close with schools of tropical fish and colourful reef systems.

The Muri Night Markets are a must-visit too. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday night, dozens of vendors gather to sell an array of mouth-watering food, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. From fresh seafood to local delicacies like Ika Mata and Poke, there’s something to satisfy every taste bud.

It’s a fun atmosphere, with live music and traditional dance. It’s a great place to experience the warmth and hospitality of the island’s community and rub shoulders with the locals who love the food too!

If families have the energy for a hike, Rarotonga has some superb trails. The Cross Island Track is a favourite, taking you from one side of the island to the other, over a peak called the Needle. It’s a tough bit of a climb but worth it for the views and the experience, especially if you go with a guide who can tell you all about the island.

On Rarotonga’s west, south, and east coasts, you’ll find beautiful beaches with clear, calm water. Muri Beach, Aroa Beach, and Titikaveka Beach are three of the top picks – all perfect (and safe) for snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and kite surfing. Families should also book in a lagoon cruise to get up close and personal with some amazing snorkelling spots, full of colourful fish and coral. If snorkelling’s not your thing, you can just swim or chill on the boat. Most cruises stop at a small island for a BBQ lunch, with lots of time for the kids to explore.

In Muri Beach, Te Vara Nui Village is a cultural hub where families can learn all about Cook Islands culture through tours and shows. Kids can get hands-on with activities like weaving and husking coconuts, and there’s a big lunch and cultural show to finish off.

And secure a spot for Palm Grove’s famous Sunday BBQ - offering a choice of ribeye or broadbill, along with a buffet of fresh salads. Yum!

Nautilus Resort

Sitting on Muri Beach, Nautilus Resort provides a luxurious family escape. There’s a lot to indulge in here. Mum and dad may like to stroll over to Spa Nautilus for some good old-fashioned pampering, topped off with a fruity cocktail by the infinity pool. While Nautilus

‘Kids Concierge’ offers provides a variety of fun educational and cultural activities for little ones over 5.

In the evening, the whole family will love dining at the Nautilus Restaurant - an award-winning eatery where the chefs showcase their flair for crafting Pacific inspired cuisine.

The resort’s beachfront and garden villas are spacious rooms with luxurious bathrooms, Bluetooth entertainment systems, and mini kitchenettes; equipped with all the essential appliances, espresso coffee machines and more. It’s easy to fall in love with Nautilus and just as hard to say goodbye upon departure!

Muri Beach Resort

There’s nothing better than a big family group going on holiday together. Rather than all having separate rooms, Muri Beach Resort has a Plantation House (nestled in the hills behind the resort), that sleeps up to eight people in three bedrooms, with a spacious, open-plan living and dining area and windows that open wide. Back down on the lagoon, Muri Beach Resort has apartments and villas, with all the villas including a spa bath so the family can jump into and relax as the sun goes down. It’s easy to keep everyone smiling here, as there are lots of beach activities, in-house movies for rainy days and evenings, and a Polynesian-style restaurant beside the pool.

AITUTAKI

Think Aitutaki. Think dreamy tropical paradise. Coconut palms swaying in the breeze, the bluest of the blue water and a laid back island atmosphere that gives you no choice but to relax. It’s always been popular with couples, but it’s a magic spot for families too. And although the extra flight from Rarotonga to Aitutaki can prove a barrier for some, the extra effort is well worth it.

With such serene surroundings to soak up, you might picture lazy days of doing nothing more than swim, sleep and sip on cooling beverages. This holiday agenda is certainly one option, but this magical island can also keep the families surprisingly busy if they so desire.

Lagoon Exploration

The Aitutaki experience revolves around the lagoon, and there are half a dozen companies that operate cruises. While their exact itineraries vary, they usually stop by well-known motu (tiny islands) such as Tapuaeta’i (One Foot Island), Honeymoon Island, Maina and Akaiami. Snorkelling gear is provided and lunch typically consists of a delicious fish barbecue. Half-day and full-day options are available and visitors can enjoy the full range of lagoon activities like fishing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, tube riding and of course snorkelling.

Market Day Island Style

Visitors who make an effort to get out of their resort and experience the local people and their culture will have a far more satisfying holiday. On Aitutaki, a good place to start is a visit to the local markets. While they’re open every day, Saturday is the biggest and has the most to see and buy.

Here you’ll find local people selling fresh local produce to locals and tourists alike. Souvenirs can be found among the stalls, selling locally made arts and crafts and woven goods or you can stroll the markets and take it all in. Either way you’ll be richer for the experience.

FAMILY FAVOURITES

Return to Raro

For the first time, the whole Ridler family explores one of Mum and Dad’s favourite destinations.

What made you pick your particular island destination?

Having travelled to Rarotonga a couple of times before having children, we always found it relaxed, laid back, and easy-going. With a school-aged child, we needed to travel during school holidays and found Rarotonga to be cost-effective even at peak times.

Our reasons for choosing Raro included good family resorts with great pools, a manageable time difference that allowed for a stress-free holiday, short flight duration, abundant activities, safe snorkelling right at our doorstep, its relaxing vibe, and a special personal significance as the place where we got engaged.

Was this the first time your family had holidayed there?

We had holidayed in Rarotonga twice before, pre-children. This trip was our first with our two children.

Which property did you stay at?

The Rarotongan Beach Resort.

And what was your main reason for choosing it?

The great pool, snorkelling, kids club and activities were all appealing.

How old are your children?

10 months and 6 years.

What did they love most about the holiday?

Enjoying quality family time.

What were your top 3 family activities?

Snorkelling right outside our doorstep at The Rarotongan Beach Resort, exploring the Punanga Nui Market for souvenirs and coconut drinks for the kids. And dining out at our favourite spotsThe Mooring Cafe for the best fish sandwiches, Beluga, Vili’s Burger Joint, and Trader Jacks for a nice drink in the sun.

What are your top tips for taking a family to this island?

Renting a car proved very useful, especially with a baby, as we didn’t want to rely on buses. It was convenient for island trips and spontaneous stops and useful for exploring even on rainy days. Ensuring your hotel has a good Kids’ Club can be a lifesaver, especially for indoor activities during bad weather.

Do you have plans to go back?

Nothing is locked in yet, but we absolutely plan to return. We love Raro!

CALEDONIA

A Magical Mix

New Caledonia is a truly unique family destination where Pacific beauty meets French flair and an age-old Melanesian culture. It’s a place where families can enjoy flawless white sand beaches, sample French-inspired cuisine, and discover the local lifestyle all in one trip.

NEW
20 Pacific Family Time
Pacific Family Time 21 AMEDEE ISLAND © NCT - TOKO

The first thing visitors need to understand is that New Caledonia is large by Pacific Island standards. The main island of Grand Terre covers an area of over 16,000km² – which is about one and a half times bigger than the Big Island of Hawai’i. We’re talking 450km from one end to the other.

What does this mean? In terms of planning a family trip, New Caledonia offers a wide range of options across a huge diversity of landscapes.

You can stay in and around the vibrant cosmopolitan city of Noumea, head up the West Coast to dive into the world’s largest lagoon, or bike along stunning mountain trails. On the East Coast, you’ll find lush rainforests and black stone cliffs, far from any crowds. Down South, there are red dirt trails perfect for hiking and blue rivers ideal for kayaking.

But there’s more still. If you’re willing to head offshore, you’ll discover some of the world’s most idyllic islands - Isle de Pins, Lifou, Mare, and Ouvea. Each one is different, but all are equally mesmerising.

From a purely practical point of view, New Caledonia also provides families with accommodation options that are tailor-made. Whether it’s apartment-style setups or larger accommodations, there’s something for families of every size, providing a comfortable base to unwind after a day’s adventures.

These options are also ideal for families traveling with multiple generations, offering plenty of space for everyone from grandparents to children, allowing for shared experiences and memory-making amid New Caledonia’s stunning scenery and rich cultural backdrop.

NOUMEA - CITY BY THE SEA

The coastal city of Noumea is the perfect launchpad for any family expedition. The streets are dotted with cafes, eateries, markets, and bakeries, each offering a taste of traditional French cuisine (and sweet treats) to please the whole family, from addictive handcrafted pastries to seafood fresh off the boat.

A lot of food products are imported directly from France, which means parents have the opportunity to indulge in exquisite French wine, cheeses, and other yummy treats that you don’t see back home.

Noumea also boasts some beautiful beaches. Anse Vata and Citron Bay are the two most popular spots. Lining the white sands

are cafes, bars, restaurants, and boutiques, creating a chilled spot to unwind, enjoy a meal, and refresh with a swim in the crystalclear waters.

One of Noumea’s must-dos is taking a ride on “Le Petit Train.” This charming open-air train is a fun and convenient way to tour the city’s highlights. The journey weaves through the bustling city centre, along beaches, and past bays, accompanied by informative commentary.

Meanwhile, the Aquarium des Lagons offers a peek into local marine life, with coral, fish, and nocturnal sea creature displays. The interactive touch tank is especially popular with kids, allowing them to touch starfish and other creatures!

EXPLORING GRAND TERRE

While many families will find themselves drawn to the conveniences and attractions of Noumea, venturing beyond the city reveals the wider attractions of New Caledonia. The northern half of Grand Terre is (appropriately) called the Northern Province. The area is very diverse, with wide open plains on the West Coast through to picturesque waterfalls and tropical forests on the East Coast, as well as deserted islands, pretty beaches, and excellent snorkelling sites.

Families who love nature and unspoilt spots will be in their element. The best ways to explore this region is by car - we’re talking about a good old-fashioned family road trip!

Heading north from Noumea, there are numerous highlights. These include the spectacular Poe Beach near Bourail, plus you can take a detour to Roche Percee Beach and check out the impressive rock formations that have been carved by wind and waves.

The Northern Province capital of Kone is a good place to spend the night, plus it’s not far from the iconic Heart of Voh, the heart-shaped mangrove made famous by photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

Head from west to east, and you come to Hienghene, another Northern Province must-see. The area is famous for its towering black limestone rocks that first appear on the road south of Hienghene. They are all spectacular, but don’t miss the Poule Couveuse rock formation (translated as the Brooding Hen) that lies at the entrance to Hienghene Bay. A visit to Belvédère will give you the best lookout point. If the weather is clear, you’ll also be able to see Mount Panié, New Caledonia’s highest peak at just over 1600 metres.

The Far North area also has plenty of wild landscape adventures. There are flights over the reef, boat day trips to amazing islets, or go on a cultural discovery to Tiebaghi’s old mining village. Plus, there are lots of things to do and see in the town of Poum.

The Great South of New Caledonia is home to the Blue River Provincial Park, the largest park in the region. It’s great for mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, and swimming in the Blue River. Beyond the park, the area is filled with nature reserves like the Madeleine waterfalls with its beautiful botanical trail, the Netcha’s excellent mountain biking routes, and the N’Dua Reserve where families can spot humpback whales from June to September.

The Kanaks are the original Melanesian inhabitants and make up about 40 percent of the population, although most live outside the capital. The New Caledonia Museum, located in the city centre close to the municipal market, offers a fascinating insight into Kanak and Melanesian heritage.

The Kanaks have a long association with the arts, and the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, located along a ridgeline on a peninsula about eight kilometres northeast of Nouméa, is architecturally impressive. It includes ten pavilions based on original indigenous designs and features an art centre, exhibition spaces, a multi-media library, and a landscaped park that the whole family can enjoy.

Hidden Treasures

SAMOA 26 Pacific Family Time

Samoa is home to a rich culture that embraces simplicity, tradition, and family values. Its physical landscape possesses an untamed natural beauty, boasting breathtaking beaches, cascading waterfalls, towering mountains, blowholes, waterholes, and volcanic plains. But despite these attractions, Samoa also feels very nontouristy. It’s the kind of place where families can enjoy their holiday and feel part of Samoa at the same time.

Pacific Family Time 27

From a practical standpoint, Samoa consists of two main islands, each offering unique and equally remarkable family experiences. Upolu, the busier and more visited island, offers a selection of topnotch resorts, a striking southern coastline, and the vibrant capital, Apia. This combination makes for a fun family holiday.

In contrast, Savai’i epitomises ‘Real Samoa’ as the locals often refer to it. Steeped in tradition, Savai’i captivates with its pristine, untouched landscapes, offering an endless number of options for families to create their own adventures. While Upolu is laid-back, Savai’i takes ‘island time’ to another level.

Regardless of where families choose to travel in Samoa, there’s always an opportunity to unwind, relax, and appreciate Pacific Island life as it’s meant to be experienced.

UPOLU

Apia is the commercial centre of Upolu. It’s a city bursting with character, and there’s no better place to soak it up than the city’s vibrant markets. The Fugalei Market (next to the Apia bus station) is a treasure trove of souvenirs including wood carvings, jewellery, lava-lavas, hats, and massage oils. It’s also a great place to sample local flavours with a variety of delicious cooked foods and exotic local produce on offer. The market is a fantastic place to get children excited about fruits and vegetables! A visit to the Apia Fish Market is fun for families too, especially early in the morning. Or pop in later in the day for fresh-off-the-boat fish and chips!

The Samoa Cultural Village in Apia offers an immersive cultural experience and insights into ‘Fa’a Samoa’ – the Samoan Way.

Savaii Lagoon Resort is a boutique 3-star family resort situated right on a beautiful, safe lagoon. Ideal for children to learn to snorkel, swim, and kayak with wonderful coral and marine life. Most bungalows sleep up to five people. Barefoot Bar & Restaurant is also on-site with a tropical breakfast included. Transfers are available from the wharf on request.

Visitors are warmly welcomed and encouraged to respect the local customs. Families can witness the crafting of traditional items and savour authentic Samoan cuisine.

Heading out of town, there’s endless things to see and do. For some water-based fun, kids and adults can slide down the slick rocks at the Papase’ea Sliding Rocks. The sliding rocks are divided into two sections, one for children and the other for adults. Plus, it’s a great spot for a family picnic.

The Palolo Deep Marine Reserve in Apia is another great place for swimming and snorkelling. Jump into the large pool fed by the sea and see the amazing colours of Samoan marine life. It’s advisable to wear reef shoes, although they are optional, and to time your visit for high tide for the best experience. Other swimming highlights include the Piula Cave Pool - a crystal-clear freshwater pool formed from an ancient lava tube.

Lalomanu Beach is one of the best in the South Pacific, and that’s saying something. It’s worthwhile spending a whole day here, just relaxing and swimming. The lagoon life is protected, and the water teems with tropical marine life. Overlooking the beach are a number of budget-accommodation providers, with traditional style beach fales. They also have their own bar and restaurant which are open to anyone.

Just along the coast is another must-see, To Sua Ocean Trench in Lotofaga Village. Access is down a wooden ladder, where an underground tunnel links a water hole to the ocean. The mix of fresh and saltwater creates random warm spots, and the kids can entertain themselves by swimming and exploring the rock pools.

SAVAI’I

The island of Savai’i is like Upolu a generation ago. It is less developed and there are fewer people. It offers an authentic and unspoiled experience of Polynesian culture and natural beauty.

Getting to the island is simple. A ferry from Upolu leaves the wharf at Mulifanua (just south of the airport) and sails to the main town of Salelologa. The crossing takes about 90 minutes and there are several departures every day. Salelologa is a small town but there’s plenty going on. Here, you can buy food and drinks, rent bicycles or a car, or stock up on produce from the market.

Known for its lush landscapes, Savai’i boasts an array of familyfriendly activities - from exploring ancient lava fields and volcanic craters to unwinding on pristine, sandy beaches.

One of the natural highlights is Afu Aau Waterfall - a spectacular sight, found in the south-eastern corner of the island. Fresh water gushes out of the lush rainforest surroundings of the waterfall to create a natural swimming pool, which goes from very shallow at the rim to very deep towards the centre – so everyone can enjoy a refreshing swim.

Another fantastic place to cool off is Mataolealelo Pool, a natural spring and a site of historical significance on Savaii due to the legend of Sina and the Eel, which tells the tale of the coconut tree’s origins. There are two pools available; a smaller one perfect for the children, and a larger one for adults.

If you’re up for a walk in the bush, it can’t get much better than Tafua Peninsula Rainforest Reserve, a pristine rainforest with many trails. One such trail leads you on a pleasant walk to the volcanic crater, which towers above Tafua village.

For explosive action, take your family over to Alofaaga Blowholes in the south-west village of Taga. At high tide, the sea burrows into the blowholes and erupts as high as 30 metres. Sometimes the locals, for a bit of fun, throw coconuts in and turn them into natural cannonballs! Satoalepai is a special village, home to a wetland’s sanctuary for endangered green turtles. The locals take great care

to revive the population, through nurturing young turtles until they are fully grown and ready to be released back into the great blue.

You can swim with the turtles in the part-fresh, part-salt water pool. And the kids will love feeding them with pieces of pawpaw. There is an entry fee, but you’re essentially contributing to the sanctuary.

PLACES TO STAY

Savaii Lagoon Resort

This resort is small and intimate, providing families with both a peaceful and fun spot to chill. The beautiful beach is merely steps away, inviting you to laze on the white sand with a delicious cocktail hand-delivered from the bar (the children can have a non-alcoholic beverage) and take a dip in the translucent lagoon. It’s safe for the kids, too, as the waters are calm, perfect conditions for snorkelling and kayaking over the coral gardens.

The resort’s restaurant serves up delicious cuisine and does their utmost to use fresh local produce where possible. Keep an eye out for lobster on the menu! There is a range of beachfront and garden accommodation, with bungalow and studio options available. They each come with a compact kitchen, and the tap water is safe due to a filtration plant.

TRAVEL WITH RESPECT

Families should be careful to observe local protocols when entering Samoan villages or accessing beaches, waterfalls, and swimming holes. They are all part of Fa’a Samoa. Avoid walking through villages during evening prayers.

Don’t wear skimpy clothing in villages; wearing a lavalava is appropriate. Nudity is not allowed anywhere in public, and women must not go topless on the beach. Sunday is a day of rest; please behave quietly and travel slowly when passing through the villages. If you wish to attend a Sunday church service, dress conservatively in smart, casual attire.

Take off your shoes before you enter a fale. You should not stand when elders are seated in a fale. Avoid pointing your feet at others when sitting in a fale. Instead, tuck them away, cross them, or cover them.

Most coastal land is privately owned; seek permission from the nearest village for access. A local representative will usually arrive shortly to assist. Be prepared to pay a small entry fee. Always ask permission before taking photos in a village.

FAMILY FAVOURITES

The Mancini family took time to explore spectacular Samoa and its different corners.

Town and Country Mancini family

What made you pick your island destination?

My husband and kids hadn’t visited Samoa, so it was a new and exciting island destination for them to check out.

Was this the first time your family had holidayed there?

For my husband and kids, yes! I’ve been there several times in the past.

Which property did you stay at?

Taumeasina Island Resort and Saletoga Sands Resort & Spa.

And what was your main reason for choosing it?

We wanted to experience different parts of the main island - a city stay at Taumeasina and a more relaxed south coast stay at Saletoga. Two quite different experiences! Saletoga has amazing lagoon-front, spacious family bungalows, daily island breakfast (including local delicacies like panipopo and breadfruit chips!), a good-sized resort pool with a swim-up bar, a fantastic island night, and lovely, friendly local staff. Taumeasina is a very luxe resort right in the heart of Apia, definitely has the wow-factor, and the 2-bedroom waterfront apartments are perfect for families.

How old are your children?

7, 12, 15.

What did they love most about the holiday?

The food was amazing - including island nights, BBQ nights, Sunday to’onai. Awesome pools and swimming in the sea and waterholes too!

What were your top 3 family activities?

To Sua Trench is a must – it’s like being in another world. Discovering local food spots. Just chilling by the pool.

What are your top tips for taking a family to this island?

It’s definitely worth hiring a rental car so you can discover more of the island. Travel light - there are washer/dryers in some resorts like Taumeasina, otherwise local laundromats around Apia too. Discover local Apia cafes/restaurants - there are so many on offer.

Do you have plans to go back?

Yes, definitely. Would love to take the family across to Savai’i one day.

Do you have any other comments or suggestions?

Travelling in the shoulder season will get you some great value deals. Live like a local - visiting supermarkets and shops, local cafes and restaurants, markets, etc – it makes for a more authentic experience.

A Family

Paradise

Fiji is a mecca for family travel. Its comprehensive offerings range from kids’ clubs to a world of activities, superb facilities for children, and diverse family-friendly accommodation options. Quite simply, Fiji means family fun!

FIJI

ISLAND, MAMANUCA ISLANDS
Pacific Family Time 37

From epic kids’ clubs to endless activities, to amazing children’s facilities and spacious family-friendly room options, very few destinations have embraced family travel like Fiji.

Fiji also provides a range of family travel choices that cater to everyone. Mums and dads on a tighter budget can find costeffective options that come with self-contained facilities, which save on eating out for every meal. At the other end of the spectrum, luxury seekers will find 5-star family holidays in Fiji’s most exclusive resorts.

But the choices don’t end there. Whether your preference is for the mainland, an island retreat, or a more secluded spot, Fiji’s key tourist regions each offer unique family holiday experiences. With such diversity, families can easily match their preferred holiday style – be it action-packed, relaxed, secluded, or adventurous –with the region and accommodation that fits their desires. There will always be something to suit.

Another key ingredient in Fiji’s recipe for family holiday success is its people. And it doesn’t take long to figure out why. Fijians have strong family traditions, which become immediately apparent in the way they engage with children.

They genuinely love little ones! This means parents with babies or toddlers can leave their precious bundles with their wonderful nannies and have total peace of mind knowing they’re in the safest of hands. Meanwhile, older kids can hang out with the “activities staff,” who excel at making every moment the best time of a kid’s life.

Because many resorts attract a multitude of children, the kids also get a chance to make new friends from New Zealand, Australia, and elsewhere around the world. It’s a real life melting pot – and even if these friendships only last a few days, they have a blast at the time. And when the kids are happy, parents are happy too. That’s what family holidays are all about!

DENARAU ISLAND

It’s big. It’s busy. And boy, does Denarau Island deliver an actionpacked family holiday! Nowhere else in the South Pacific are there so many five-star properties in such close proximity. They all provide comfortable accommodation, exceptional ‘Fijian smile’ service, and top-quality food and beverage outlets. And of course, they are home to kids’ clubs that take children’s entertainment to the next level.

Convenience is a big bonus for families staying on Denarau. With a clear run from the airport and along the Nadi bypass road, a family can be playing poolside 30 minutes after passing through customs. Family holidays in the Pacific don’t come much easier.

Having so many resorts side-by-side also gives families a smorgasbord of dining options. So, when it’s time for a change in cuisine, you can simply walk next door. Mexican, Thai, Japanese, Lebanese, Italian, Seafood, Healthy Food, Fast Food – you name it, you can eat it!

When it’s time to head (a little) further afield, Port Denarau comes into its own. It’s a stone’s throw from all the resorts – to get there, families can jump on the iconic open-air Bula Bus, catch a taxi, or walk if they’re feeling energetic.

Along with more dining options, Port Denarau is a hub for day trips and transfers to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. We’re talking about action-packed jet-ski tours, various cruises, and day trips to the islands. Plus, there is a supermarket if you want to stock up on some bottled water or snacks for the kids. If a spot of shopping is in order, Rip Curl and Jack’s of Fiji have a store. There’s also a pharmacy, a nail salon, and two beauty spas.

BIG BULA WATERPARK

For a day of slip-sliding fun, head to the Big Bula Waterpark next to the Denarau Golf Course. Kids will love the adrenaline-pumping speed slides and corkscrew twisters. Plus, there’s a huge inflatable play section with obstacle courses, surf rides, and an abundance of other games to keep the kids entertained. They also have a dedicated area for the younger ones. The water park operates all year round, and although it’s perfect for kids, adults will enjoy it just as much!

PLACES TO STAY

Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa

Sitting at the northern tip of Denarau, the Fiji Beach Resort & Spa managed by Hilton has consistently been recognised over the years as one of the top family stays in Fiji. The resort boasts a host of quality family facilities, such as the complimentary Kids Club, and accommodation that’s ideal for family groups – with spacious two and three-bedroom options. The ground floor rooms are particularly convenient as the kids can walk straight outside to play on the resort’s wide, grassy lawn out front. On top of that, parents wanting some quiet time can head to the Koro adults-only area.

Radisson Blu Resort Fiji

Radisson Blu Resort is another place where the fun never ends. The entertainment is led by the famous ‘Banana Boys’ activities crew, who are experts at keeping hordes of Kiwi and Aussie kids smiling! Treasure hunts, touch footy, and pool volleyball are just a few of the activities on offer, and the ‘Bananas’ love it just as much as the kids. The resort’s spacious 2-bedroom apartment-style rooms are also ideal for families (they have a full kitchen and laundry too).

Sheraton Denarau Villas

Very few properties have accommodation as family-friendly as Sheraton Denarau Villas. The one, two, and three-bedroom apartment-style options come with a long list of features, including a washing machine and dryer (guaranteed to put a smile on parents’ faces). The rooms also have a fully-equipped kitchen with a fullsized fridge, microwave, and cooktop. Plus, there’s a convenience store and mini food market directly in front of the resort. The cooking facilities are ideal for families that don’t want to eat every meal in the restaurant. The icing on the cake – families have unlimited access to the facilities next door at the sister property, Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort.

Radisson Blu Resort Fiji FUN LIVES HERE

In a destination where resorts have mastered the art of hosting families, Radisson Blu Resort Fiji stands out. They’ve achieved this by understanding that great family holidays cater to parents, as much as do the kids.

The Radisson Blu family experience begins the moment you open the door to your room. Or, in this case, spacious suites that are among the largest in Denarau. The Two Bedroom Suite (combining a One Bedroom Suite with a Guest Room) measures 119m² – more than enough space for 2 adults and 4 kids. The kids can enjoy their own room, while mum and dad have their private space. Although smaller, the One Bedroom Suites still offer ample room for 2 adults and up to 3 kids.

Visiting families can also make use of the full kitchen – making it easy to whip up the regular snacks that growing kids constantly request! The washing machine and dryer are also handy for keeping on top of the kids’ clothes. Altogether, this creates a home-awayfrom-home experience.

And the fun side of things? Well, where do we start!

The main pool is a hub of kids’ activities. One minute they’re zipping down a waterslide, and the next, they’re playing water volleyball with other kids. Plus, the ‘Banana Boys’ Activity Team is always on hand, keeping kids entertained with all sorts of fun – from egg throwing and crab races to touch rugby and treasure hunts. The fun never stops. Plus, there’s a toddler’s pool for the little ones.

A popular spot for girls is the hair braiding booth. The Radisson ladies are expert braiders who can create as many braids as desired – all adorned with beads in a girl’s favourite colour. Every evening, just before sundown, warriors perform the torch-lighting ceremonyclosely followed by kids who love being part of the spectacle. Needless to say, kids are in their ‘happy place’. But parents don’t miss out either! The beachside massage hut is a great place to escape. Simply lie back, listen to the waves gently lapping the shore, and let the resort’s skilled masseuses ease your aches and pains away. Radisson Blu is also home to the Harmony Retreat Day Spa. They offer a full menu of treatments and use luxurious Pure Fiji products that leave you looking, feeling, and smelling amazing!

The resort’s adults-only pool offers another escape for grown-ups. Although this pool is adjacent to the main pool, the decibel level is much lower, making reading and/or snoozing more enjoyable. And when it’s time for a refreshment, staff at the swim-up pool bar are ready to prepare whatever drink you have in mind.

With blend of fun, relaxation, and dining, Radisson Blu Resort Fiji not only promises an unforgettable family holiday but delivers an experience where every family member finds their slice of paradise.

THE MAMANUCAS: CONVENIENT PARADISE

When you picture a dream destination for a tropical family holiday, it probably looks something like this: crystal-clear waters, swaying palm trees, white sand beaches, and lazy days under the warm sun. In the Mamanuca Islands, the dream becomes reality!

Although there are several adults-only resorts in the Mamanuca Group, the majority are family-friendly. There are also resorts to suit most family budgets, and even the most affordable options offer the magical island setting that families love so much.

Each resort offers a myriad of activities, and if you’d like to venture further afield, it’s easy to do so. Snorkelling tours, surf trips out to the waves around Cloudbreak, jet ski tours, and visits to local villages are all memorable adventures families will love.

For families arriving at Nadi International Airport, island transfers are a breeze, too. South Seas ferries provide multiple sailings from Port Denarau each day. If you’d prefer to do your own thing, you can also charter a private water taxi.

If the budget can stretch, families can take the aerial route by helicopter or seaplane. It’s under a 15-minute flight time to most Mamanuca resorts, and the bird’s-eye view is quite incredible.

PLACES TO STAY

Castaway Island Resort

One of Fiji’s original island resorts, Castaway Island Resort is a longtime favourite for families. The stunning main beach comes with soft white sand; the water is crystal clear, and because the beach faces northwest, it’s sheltered from the trade winds that blow during the day. In other words, Castaway offers safe, pictureperfect swimming for kids. Older children can help themselves to the kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkelling gear to explore the rich coral reef system just offshore. Being a smaller resort, Castaway has a friendly vibe, and children find it super easy to make new friends, whether that’s at the kids’ club, the pool, or just exploring around the resort. Accommodation options are also well set up for families, particularly the beachfront family bures which can sleep mum, dad, and three kids with ease.

Malolo Island Resort

Malolo Island Resort is another property that consistently rates as a top family resort. Malolo’s appeal is obvious. There’s a separate kids’ pool, a fantastic kids’ club programme, an entertainment lounge, and a dining area for children 13 years and older. The Kids’ Club in Tia’s Treehouse, set on the hillside under an enormous mango tree, is always a hive of activity. Snorkelling lessons, Fijian cooking lessons, rock painting, coconut bowling, and various beach games are just some of the fun to be had. The Oceanview Bures sleep two adults and two kids in comfort, and the resort also has four ‘plus-size’ Family Bures that can sleep up to seven.

Plantation Island Resort

Plantation Island Resort offers a five-star location at a family-friendly price, a combination that has made it one of the most popular family resorts in Fiji. A true children’s paradise, the resort features a huge range of activities. There are two outdoor playgrounds tailored to different age groups: one for children under five years

old, and another for those aged six to eleven. Teenagers have their own programme filled with a variety of beach games and craft activities. The resort’s inflatable water park is a hub of excitement, with six sections including a spring-free aqua trampoline and various climbing towers — kids never want to leave the water! For a little family exercise, there’s also a fleet of bicycles (Bula Bikes) to explore the wider island on. In a nutshell, Plantation Island is a heaven for kids.

Making Family Travel Fun and Flexible

The hum of the engines, the view from thousands of feet in the air, and the anticipation of arriving at a new destination can be as thrilling for children as it is for adults. But sometimes, flying with kids is less about the wonder of flight and more about the challenge of keeping them comfortable and entertained above the clouds.

From packing the right snacks to ensuring their screen is charged and on board, travelling with the family requires a strategy all its own. Enter Fiji Airways, a carrier that truly understands the challenges of family travel. With activities designed for the youngest of travellers and services that ease a parent’s load, Fiji Airways turns every journey into part of the holiday fun. In fact, they’ve thought through every detail, to make sure the magic of flying isn’t lost on the kids.

Cool Kids Packs

For kids, opening an activity pack is a bit like opening a present. They can’t wait to see what’s inside and play with it! The Fiji Airways ‘Our Ocean, Our Life’ Activity Pack definitely has that effect on

kids. Plus, it comes with an important message. The in-flight activity pack and series of books are dedicated to educating the future generation on the importance of preserving and protecting Fiji’s spectacular yet fragile marine environment.

The series features five colourful ocean characters. Saboo the sea turtle is supported by Fifi the flying fish, who promotes efforts to reduce plastic use; Skipper the seahorse spreads the word on the detrimental effects of climate change; Starry the starfish is an advocate for reforestation - particularly mangroves; and Okie the octopus is the superstar for the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse & Recycle.

Resort Check-In Equals Less Airport Stress

Resort Check-In is another area of potential stress for parents. Which is where Fiji Airways Resort Check-In comes in super handy. Quite simply, parents can check the family into their international flight directly at the resort, providing a seamless and stress-free resort to airport experience. Everyone’s bags are tagged and securely transported to the airport, and boarding passes are issued. Once at the airport, families can head straight for security and immigration.

The ‘Resort Check-In’ feature is currently available at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, the Hilton Fiji

Beach Resort and Spa, and will be rolled out across other locations in the future too.

Fares with Flexibility

Fiji Airways also offers increased flexibility and choice to family flyers with its ‘Fly Your Way’ fares. ‘Fly Your Way’ branded fares provide four categories, including Lite, Value, Comfort, and Plus. These include varying degrees of flexibility and offerings for flying families. For example, all categories, including LITE, include inflight meals, beverages, inflight entertainment, and a carry-on bag at 7kgs, with increasing value add-ons from Lite to Plus, such as checked baggage, ticket change and cancellation flexibility, seat selection, priority check-in, priority baggage, and more. This flexibility is a godsend for families. Parents can customize their luggage to suit the needs of the family, pre-select seating arrangements and avoid long check-in lines - which is a big bonus for parents with young children.

Room to Move

With the addition of two more brand new A350-900XWB aircraft to its fleet, Fiji Airways now has four of these ultra-modern aircraft.

For families, that means more space in economy. And if the budget allows, lie-flat cabins in Business Class. The increased capacity also provides extra flight options when it comes time to book.

Heading Further Afield

CORAL COAST

Drive an hour or so south of Nadi, and you’ll come to Fiji’s Coral Coast. The area is a hotspot for families that love the convenience, facilities, and activities of larger resorts, but also for those that enjoy exploring the many natural attractions in the local area. When families stay in Denarau, it’s quite common for them to spend the whole time at the resort. On the Coral Coast, it’s a different story.

The Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Sigatoka River Safari, Tavuni Hill Fort, and Kula Wild Adventure Park are Coral Coast highlights. Visitors also have the chance to soak up the real Fiji at any number of villages along this 80-kilometre stretch of coast. If a family were to choose one, a visit to Sigatoka Town is a must. The bustling centre is always full of activity, and it’s fun to browse the shops and food stalls alongside the friendly locals.

PLACES TO STAY

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa

For a big resort family getaway, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa is hard to beat. The pristine blue waters of Natadola Beach provide safe swimming, kayaking, and snorkelling for all ages. Within the resort, the family pool impresses as one of Fiji’s largest, stretching 105 metres. For youngsters, the Planet Trekkers Kids Club offers a plethora of activities including weaving, mini Olympics, crab races, kite flying, and muffin baking, among others. Teens are also catered for with daily outdoor activities such as Pitch & Putt and volleyball, ensuring fun for the whole family.

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort

Another one of the large resorts on the Coral Coast, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort offers endless fun for kids with programs designed to suit their young clientele. Little Riggers caters to children aged three to seven, while Beach Riggers is perfect for eight to twelveyear-olds. One of the resort’s most popular attractions is the Splash Zone, featuring a colorful, spiraling waterslide that delights both kids and adults with a splashy entrance into the large pool. Bigger kids will enjoy the Outrigger Adventure Park, which includes paintball, archery, and a 230-metre driving range. Additionally, families have convenient access to Kula Wild Adventure Park, located just down the road.

ECOTRAX RAILWAY ADVENTURES

The Coral Coast has a rich history as one of Fiji’s most productive sugar cane regions. Although its heyday as a hub for sugar production has passed, the old railway tracks that transported sugar cane to the mills have been repurposed for a unique tour experience.

EcoTrax offers an adventure where you can traverse mangroves and cross waterways on these tracks using a modified electric bicycle carriage, known as a Velocipede, mounted onto the railway. You have the option to pedal yourself or let the automated motor propel you forward, allowing you to absorb the beautiful scenery around you. The tour also includes stops at a local village and a secluded beach, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Beachside Bliss

An easy 55-minute drive south of Nadi International Airport, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa consistently delivers an exceptional standard of service for a wide range of visitors – couples, wedding groups, honeymooners, golfers, and anyone else seeking a first-class resort experience. And of course, families who fall in love with everything the resort has to offer.

LIFE’S A BEACH

As you drive into the resort, you’ll be greeted with panoramic views over Natadola Bay. On the water’s edge is a long stretch of pure white sand – the famous Natadola Beach, which is one of the finest in Fiji. Indeed, the beach is a natural drawcard that very few ‘mainland’ resorts can match.

Making the most of this amazing beach is easy. Adults and kids have some great snorkelling spots straight in front of the resort. You can also grab a kayak or paddleboard and explore to your heart’s content. There’s even a small surf break with gentle waves that are perfect for kids who want to get their first taste of surfing.

AQUATIC ACTION

The water-based action doesn’t stop there. Hydro Sports Fiji is based at the resort and provides families with an exhilarating lineup - including jetski safaris, solo or tandem jetski hire, tubing,

wakeboarding, and kneeboarding - with each experience designed to suit all adrenaline levels. Guests can dive into the underwater world with snorkelling and scuba diving at Natadola Bay. Needless to say, safety is a top priority, with certified and experienced teams ensuring adventures of a lifetime!

SUPER-SIZED POOL

While the beach is amazing, the family pool is extra impressive too. Measuring 105 metres in length, it’s one of the biggest pools in Fiji. And because it’s only 80 centimetres deep at its deepest spot, it’s a safe, super-sized watery playground!

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa has also introduced a new poolside ordering system for its family and adults-only pools. When tummies are rumbling, mum or dad can scan a unique QR code at their lounger to access a mobile ordering platform. And then place orders directly from their devices.

KID’S CLUB FUN

DINING DELIGHTS

Planet Trekkers, the resort’s kid’s club, is also great for kids. It offers a dynamic and engaging programme for children aged 4-12 - featuring a variety of daily activities including arts and crafts, sports, and cultural experiences like Fijian weaving, chef hat making, and treasure hunts.

Children under 4 years can also enjoy Planet Trekkers, but they must be in the company of a resort nanny. Teens aren’t left out either. InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa offers pitch & putt, and volleyball sessions that cater specifically to their age group. The Recreation Team will have the latest schedule of daily activities.

PAMPERED PERFECTION

Family holidays shouldn’t just be about the kids! Busy mums and dads will love getting pampered at Spa InterContinental, which has a menu designed to delight. There’s a full selection of treatments – massages, body detox treatments, facials, hand and foot care, brows and waxing.

There’s also a unique Wai Zone that features water in three different states – a steam room, hydrotherapy pool, and an ice-shower, complete with chilled water and a bucket of ice you can pour over your body!

Last but not least, there’s the food. At InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, dining becomes a family affair with diverse options catering to both adults’ and kids’ tastes. From Navo’s high-end specialty dining, which combines local Fijian produce with international culinary techniques, to the laid-back Toba Bar & Grill ideal for family meals with pizzas and burgers, there’s something for everyone.

The buffet breakfast and themed buffet dinners at Sanasana are highlights. While Kama Lounge is a place for parents to enjoy a cocktail with stunning views.

From the second families arrive to the second they leave, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa will deliver an experience that’s fun, friendly, and near faultless. The type of family experience that will have you coming back.

Dream Time

The Osbourne family swaps their busy city life for the laid-back pace of beautiful Castaway Island in the Mamanuca Group.

What made you pick your particular island destination for your family holiday?

A 3-hour flight and same time zone, so the travel side of things is easy. It’s safe for kids – they can pretty much roam free. The sunshine, and of course, a beautiful beach!

Was this the first time your family had holidayed there?

We went last year and rebooked immediately once we were home (it was that good).

Which property did you stay at?

We stayed at Castaway Island Resort - in a garden bungalow last year and a south beach bungalow this year. We loved staying right on the beach with a hammock in front of us. We’d love to try the north beach next time!

And what was your main reason for choosing it?

All the bungalows are the same; we thought the south beach looked nice last year as it’s a bit quieter and more private! However, it is a bit windier on that side.

How old are your children?

Two girls - 3.5 and 6.5.

What did they love most about the holiday?

Swimming, snorkelling, sunshine and the buffet breakfast!

What were your top 3 family activities?

They’re just the same, really - swimming, snorkelling, relaxing together as a family.

What are your top tips for taking a family to this island?

Pack a bag of snacks to keep in your bure (we took lots of dry food for the kids and cheeses etc). Take your own alcohol to keep in your fridge, so you can have a gin or wine whenever you feel like it! Book your boat from Denarau to align with flight times as sometimes they don’t all work!

Do you have plans to go back?

Yes, absolutely! We’d love to go every year.

Do you have any other comments or suggestions?

7 nights is the perfect time! We felt we’d stayed the perfect amount both times!

Aloha Adventures

HAWAI’I 52 Pacific Family Time
WAIKIKI BEACH, OAHU ©BEN ONO.

Hawai‘i is one of those destinations that offers a supreme amount of choice. The four ‘main’ islands for family holidays are O‘ahu (where you’ll first land), the island of Hawai‘i (Big Island), Maui, and Kaua‘i. The sheer variety on offer is amazing, and each island has outstanding attractions with their own unique feel. It’s just a matter of deciding how long you’d like to go for and then narrowing down the places you’d like to see and stay. Regardless of what you choose, your family will have a ball.

O‘AHU

Waikīkī Beach, overlooked by the summit of Diamond Head, is one of the most famous beaches in the world. That sweep of golden sand is a magnet for families. The surf is gentle and perfect for beginners. Or you can jump aboard a classic outrigger canoe with the Hawaiian crew guiding you out beyond the breakers before catching a wave back to the beach.

Just a hop, skip, and a jump away is the Ala Moana Center, a shopping mall that takes entertainment to a whole new level. Families can take their pick of the food vendors and restaurants, listen to musicians playing Hawaiian music, or shop for bright Hawaiian shirts and virtually anything else you can think of. Honolulu Zoo and the Waikīkī Aquarium make for fun family excursions too.

Pearl Harbour is another must-see. Here, the story of the Second World War will come to life. A visit to the USS Arizona Memorial is a moving experience. And don’t forget to also visit the battleship USS Missouri. Boys big and small will be awed by her size and massive firepower!

The rest of O‘ahu provides plenty to keep families busy too. Take a drive to the North Shore and stop by some of the world’s most famous surf breaks – like Pipeline, Waimea Bay, and Sunset Beach. Grab a shave ice or fresh-cooked prawns from the trucks that line this coast.

Take the route via the eastern coast to stop by Kualoa Ranch, a working cattle ranch and farm. If you’ve seen the movies Jurassic Park, Lost, Godzilla, or Kong: Skull Island, you may recognise many of the scenes, as they were all partially filmed here.

The eastern coast has at least three zipline tours and adventure parks, where kids can sweep down a hill or across a valley, or cross narrow suspension bridges. Lots of fun! Just remember to look around as the scenery whizzes by in fast forward. Hanauma Bay is one of the easiest places in all of Hawai‘i to go snorkelling amid vivid corals and marine life.

And if you don’t feel like heading to the beach, parents can hire a Kealohilani Cabana located at the family-friendly Kealohilani Pool Deck – simply lie back and relax while the kids jump in and out of the water.

HAWAI‘I – THE BIG ISLAND

Called “The Big Island” to avoid confusion with the state itself, Hawai‘i appeals to adventurous families as well as those who like nothing more than relaxing within their resort. There are two sides to Hawai‘i, as the Kona side is baking hot and the tropical vegetation on the Hilo side often drips with rain.

The most popular attraction is Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park - a spectacular playground for families seeking adventure amidst the wonders of nature. This vast park offers a unique opportunity for children and adults alike to witness the primal process of creation and destruction at one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kīlauea.

With a bunch of safe hiking trails like those through the Thurston Lava Tube, families can explore ancient forests, walk through old lava tubes, and marvel at the lunar-like landscapes. The park’s educational centres provide interactive exhibits and ranger-led

programs that make learning about geology, volcanology, and local ecosystems both fun and engaging for all ages.

Whether it’s witnessing the glow of a lava lake at night or spotting rare native birds, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is a memorable destination where families can ignite their curiosity, literally!

MAUI

The island of Maui is well-known as a hotspot for honeymooners, but Maui also has plenty to entice visiting families. Children will enjoy the new humpback whale experience at the Maui Ocean Center in Mā‘alaea. Kids can immerse themselves in a 3D film where the whales will come to life. They can also learn about Hawai‘i’s rich marine life, and go behind the scenes at the center to feed the sea turtles.

Whale-watching season in Maui runs from December to May, with the peak months being January to April. Lahaina Harbor is the launching point for numerous whale-watching charters. At the height of the season, more than a thousand whales will cruise off Lahaina’s coast, so a close encounter is close to guaranteed! All visitors should be aware that Lahaina was devastated by wildfires in 2023, so any travel to this part of Maui should be undertaken with respect for the local community.

Another popular activity is driving the famous Road to Hāna. The town is 80 kilometers from Kahului on the twisting, turning, scenic Hāna Highway (if car sickness is an issue it’s probably best to avoid). If not, there are literally adventures around every corner. The road passes rainforest, waterfalls, beaches, lava tubes, and lookouts. And 16 kilometers south of Hāna are the popular Pools of ‘Ohe‘o, where waterfalls spill into tiered pools leading to the sea.

Family Action

The perfect destination for ‘bigger’ kids, Hawai’i was the first choice for the Nelson family’s Pacific adventure.

What made you pick your particular island destination for your family holiday?

We wanted to go somewhere warm to escape the Auckland weather and find a place where our ‘bigger’ kids had plenty to do.

Was this the first time your family had holidayed there?

Yes, this was our first visit.

Which property did you stay at?

Embassy Suites, located right in the heart of Waikiki Beach.

And what was your main reason for choosing it?

It came recommended to us, and they offered apartment-style accommodation, which suited our family’s needs.

How old are your children?

16 and 14 years old.

What did they love most about the holiday?

Given our busy lives in Auckland, being able to get away and enjoy some quality family time away from work and other commitments was fantastic.

What were your top 3 family activities?

We enjoyed dolphin watching, exploring the North Shore, and walking the Stairs of Doom at Koko Crater.

What are your top tips for taking a family to this island?

Expect it to be busy, especially around Waikiki. Swimming with dolphins is a must-do. Be mindful that paying in US Dollars can make Hawaii quite pricey, so it’s good to be aware of the costs beforehand.

Do you have plans to go back?

Not immediately. We had fun, but we like to explore new places, so we’ll try somewhere new next time.

Pacific Family Time 57

KAUA‘I

Tell the children they’re going to the island where the movie Jurassic Park and its sequels were filmed, and they’ll probably insist that you take them on a helicopter ride. Do it if you possibly can, because the Nāpali Coast on Kaua‘i’s North Shore is as rugged and spectacular as you can imagine.

The coastal waters are home to several species of dolphins, as well as humpback whales during the winter. Crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay, with its backdrop of mist-shrouded mountains, is the center of activity on the North Shore. The surf is calm during the northern summer but becomes a focus for surfers keen on riding the giant swells in winter. As well as water sports, including kayaking, hire some fishing rods and bait and fish off the old pier, or visit historic landmarks and galleries.

Hanalei town has colorful shops, galleries, and restaurants. You’ll also find Lumaha‘i Beach. It may look vaguely familiar to some parents, as it was the setting for the movie South Pacific. There are some great places to eat in what used to be the Old Hanalei School House and Ching Young Village. Further around on the East Side, the kayaking is more placid at Wailua River State Park, and the town of Kapa‘a has some excellent Hawaiian arts and crafts.

Ziplining across lush valleys is another great family activity on Kaua‘i, even for those with a fear of heights. One of the most thrilling marine sights for snorkelers and scuba divers is seeing massive manta rays “fly” through the water. They have no teeth, stingers, or barbs and mostly feed during the day, but at Honokōhau Harbor families can put on their snorkels and go out at night, where special blue lights attract the plankton on which the manta feed.

60 Pacific Family Time NIUE
© DAVID KIRKLAND

Niue is a destination that embraces the simple life. It’s super relaxed, the people are warm and welcoming, and nothing is a rush. But even though the island has a wonderfully laid-back vibe, Niue is far removed from your regular flop and drop destination. This unique coral island is tailor made for family-friendly adventures that will create a lifetime of memories.

One of the world’s largest coral islands, Niue is just a three-and-ahalf-hour flight from New Zealand. Because the island was ‘thrust’ out of the ocean, the coast consists of limestone cliffs surrounded by a central plateau. You won’t find classic white sand beaches or towering mountain peaks. Nor will you find large resorts with kids’ clubs, waterslides, and nannies at your beck and call.

But that is the beauty of Niue. It’s paradise families seeking a holiday experience that’s refreshingly different.

Most family adventures in Niue begin along its dramatic coastal fringe. Accessible by sea tracks off Niue’s main road, a myriad of chasms, caves, and rock pools await exploration. Highlights include Limu Pools and Matapa Chasm. With no lakes or streams on the island and rainwater naturally filtered through limestone, the water is virtually sediment-free, offering clarity that is literally out of this world.

The Talava Arches Sea Track is another journey worth undertaking. More suitable for older children, it’s a 30-minute trek through rough, rocky terrain and cave (shoes are essential). The track concludes at a cave opening, offering a stunning view of the iconic Talava Arches. At low tide, visitors can walk across the reef and under the arch, with a channel cut into the reef providing another excellent snorkelling spot.

The clear ocean waters off the coast also offer families numerous opportunities for adventure. Families visiting between July and October will have the chance to witness the whales that migrate to Niue’s warm waters to nurse their calves.

Niue has licensed operators who offer close-quarter encounters with these magnificent sea creatures—an absolute must for families and an experience you’ll never forget. For those unable to travel during these months, swimming with the resident (and acrobatic) spinner dolphins can be enjoyed year-round.

Pacific Family Time 61

Fishing in Niue is also phenomenal, in fact, it’s arguably some of the best in the Pacific. Local charters tailor excursions to suit every family member, whether it’s visiting spots where younger ones can catch smaller fish or heading further out for older kids and adults to reel in ocean heavyweights like tuna, mahimahi, and wahoo.

Niue’s underwater adventures are equally thrilling. The island offers accessible diving for families, with caverns, caves, pristine coral walls, and dramatic drop-offs ready to be explored. Seasoned divers will find themselves in their element, and it’s also an excellent place for children new to scuba diving. Certified courses are available for youngsters keen on earning their first dive ticket!

Back on land the adventures don’t stop either! Niue has a network of biking trails and because the island is relatively flat – kids of all ages can pedal with ease. (There are numerous places to hire bikes on the island). And for something completely different – how about hunting uga or giant coconut crab? This night time adventure will have you trekking inland in search of this local delicacy. Quick tip: the crabs have powerful pincers so be careful where you place your fingers.

Arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend. No crime, no traffic and no queues. Relax or explore. Swim, fish and dive in the clearest waters in the pacific. The world’s only Dark Sky Nation welcomes you to the way life used to be; the way life should be.

QUALITY TIME GUARANTEED

Family holidays are about spending quality time with the special people in our lives. While regular resort holidays can provide a much-needed break, few can offer the genuine family adventures you’ll experience in Niue. Regardless of where you stay in Niue, you’ll spend days exploring and you’ll probably leave with plenty of exploring still to be done. In many ways, spending time in Niue is far more than just a holiday, it is an immersive journey that gently pushes your boundaries. The island pace and its people will slow you down, amplify your senses, and pull your family closer together.

PLACES TO STAY

Scenic Matavai Resort and Apartments

Sitting on Niue’s southwestern coastline, Scenic Matavai Resort and Apartments is the island’s largest and best-known property. 1.5km from the main resort, Scenic Matavai also operates a complex with self-contained apartments that are ideally suited for visiting families. Picking up food supplies from the local supermarket is easy and it also helps to keep holiday costs down too.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE WHALE KIND

The islands of Tahiti promise a blend of relaxation and adventure for all ages. This jewel of the South Pacific is more than just a honeymoon hotspot. From the shores of its amazing lagoons to hiking trails and ancient marae, the islands of Tahiti offer a myriad of activities that cater to the curious minds and spirited hearts of children and adults alike.

Pacific Family Time 65

The starting point for all family holidays is the city of Papeete on the island of Tahiti. With a population of 25,000, it’s a commercial hub that’s vibrant and bustling. Families will love wandering through the aisles of Marché de Papeete market, where fresh tuna, swordfish and other fish are laid out for sale, and the scents of tiare Tahiti and orchids waft through with the sea breeze.

Handicrafts from throughout French Polynesia are also sold here, including woven hats and baskets from the Austral Islands, Marquesan stone and wooden carvings, tifaifai or patchwork quilts. At dusk, families can head for a bite to eat at Place Vai’ete. Here roulottes, or food carts, serve up all kinds of cuisine, plus it’s a good way to meet the locals.

For a whole new level of excitement families can take a visit to Teahupoo, one of the world’s most famous surf breaks. On the southwestern shores of Tahiti, at the roads end, Teahupoo has a reputation for its powerful, steep faced waves. Only experts can

ride this break, but families can take a sightseeing and photography tour to the surfbreak, and learn about local history and legends along the way.

Whether you’re riding solo or sharing a jet ski with the kids tucked safely behind mum or dad, you’ll be swept away by the beauty of the turquoise waters. And you’ll get a glimpse into the island’s ecosystems.

As you glide along, you’ll see dramatic peaks rise above the shoreline, pristine white sand beaches, and vibrant coral gardens. You might even be lucky enough to come across dolphins or, during July to October, the whales that migrate through these waters. Tahiti’s stunning coastline may be the main attraction for most families, but those looking for adventure should look inland too. Within half an hour of leaving Papeete, families will be amongst mountains, waterfalls, and the serene rivers of Papenoo. The valley isn’t just rich in landscapes; it’s steeped in history. It was once densely populated before European missionaries encouraged relocation to urban areas. Now, only a few residents enjoy this secluded paradise.

The journey offers numerous stops for the whole family to enjoy, from waterholes where harmless black eels swim, to a view of the island’s crater, a dramatic reminder of Tahiti’s volcanic origins. And for a memorable end to the adventure? A cooling swimming spot with rocks to jump off.

From the western side of Tahiti, you’ll see the mountainous peaks of Moorea. Although only 20km away, the atmosphere is distinctly different. Home to about 18,000 people, scattered across quaint coastal villages, Moorea is heaven for families seeking a laid-back island vibe.

Circling Moorea on the coastal road is nothing short of picture postcard. Just keep your eyes on the road – the majestic mountains and stunning bays can easily distract you! The speed limit here is 60kph – so take it slow, and simply pull over when the mood takes you.

Moorea’s coastal villages have plenty for families to see. Particularly the bigger ones like Maharepa, which has a good selection of eateries, shops and other services. Pearls, local handicrafts, clothing

stores will satisfy your retail fix. Plus families will find places to hire bikes – the coastal road is (mostly) flat and the traffic is minimal.

Getting amongst nature is a must for families and Mount Tohivea is the ideal place to start. It’s surrounded by vast tracts of tropical jungle, with the silence only broken by waterfalls and birdsong.

Belvedere Lookout is the starting point for the trails that go around the mountain slopes. (It will be warm, so fill up your water bottle and slap on some sunscreen.) Hike The Pass of the Three Coconuts, or hop on board a four-wheel-drive vehicle or an ATV for a safari tour through plantations and local villages.

Moorea is also home to a number of beautiful public beach reserves. Check out the palm-tree lined Taahiamanu Beach, one of the most popular on the island. It’s a great spot for a cooling dip at anytime during the day, or catching the glorious sunset later on.

PLACES TO STAY

Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa

Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa is a real treat for families. The magic starts with the surroundings. The resort sits on a spectacular crystal blue lagoon that’s sheltered and perfect for safe swimming and snorkelling. Families staying in an overwater bungalow can jump in right off the deck. And in the evening, the kids will love watching stingrays and sharks glide by. Back on land there is plenty more to do. Tennis, anyone? The resort has two courts that are free for all to use. Plus the kids can try their hand at other activities such as traditional weaving.

Cook’s Bay Hotel

The Cook’s Bay Hotel in Moorea, reopened in 2023 after a topto-bottom renovation that has transformed this premier property. Located on the shores of Cook’s Bay, it offers families the perfect blend of comfort and magical Moorea views. With 38 suites, including 2 designed for families, complete with kitchenettes and spacious balconies, the hotel caters to those looking for a homely stay. The expansive mirror pool and beach area is a top spot to unwind. And Le Cook’s Restaurant is fast earning a reputation as one of Moorea’s top dining destinations.

LAGOON EXPLORATION

One of the best ways to experience Moorea’s crystal clear lagoon waters is on a lagoon tour. The kids will have the chance to swim with blacktip sharks and stingrays (both are harmless). During the tour, you’ll hear fascinating stories of Moorea’s history, and myths and legends that are an important part of local culture.

You’ll get to stop in at a picture postcard motu (small island). The kids will love the snorkelling time – the visibility is fantastic and there are loads of colourful fish to see. They might even spot a turtle too. Ever husked a coconut? You’ll get a lesson on how to crack them, scrape the inside and use the raw ingredients to make the local fish dish of poisson cru. And for mum and dad there are Pina Coladas made with local pineapple rum and fresh-squeezed coconut milk.

TIKI PARC MOOREA

Tiki Parc Moorea, on the island of Moorea, offers four courses that vary in difficulty, from walking nets and bridges to swings, rope ladders, and zip lines. Everyone, except those undertaking the simplest Tiki Tamarii course, begin with supervised training. The staff will then assist you in selecting the two courses that best match your abilities. Plus, you have the option to repeat them if you wish.

Little ones from the age of three can enjoy their own adventure on the Tiki Tamarii course, which is no more than 1.5 metres above the ground. The most challenging course, Tiki Manu, features a leap into the void and a high platform 20 metres above the terrain. It’s a call to be courageous! No matter the level you select, it’s fun for the whole family, with everyone actively engaging and cheering each other on.

SET SAIL: YACHT CHARTERING

The Leeward Islands are part of the Society Islands and include Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora. These islands are ideal for families wanting a world-class sailing adventure. Only four hours apart by sail boat, there is an abundance of safe anchorages and breathtakingly beautiful lagoons and motus to visit.

There are several charter companies that offer a range of yachts from 36ft to 58ft. These yachts can be hired with a skipper and full crew including hostess and cook, or you can sail yourself providing you can prove you have experience. All yacht charters are quoted as there are dozens of variables depending on the number of passengers, crew requirements and of course the length of charter.

AMERICAN SAMOA

Exploring new horizons

When you think of Pacific Island family holidays, American Samoa might not be the first place that springs to mind. But for families wanting to tread off the beaten path, American Samoa offers a refreshing alternative to your typical island destinations. Indeed, families will discover an incredibly beautiful haven that remains raw and untouched.

70 Pacific Family Time

A quick history lesson first. American Samoa is 100 km from Samoa as the seagulls fly. American citizenship was granted following a Deed of Cession with the United States in 1900. This allowed American Samoans to work in the USA, send money home to their families, and retire, bringing their savings with them.

American Samoa also receives US federal aid, which supports the islands’ infrastructure, helps run their excellent national parks, and provides a standard of living higher than most other Pacific Islands.

Despite this outside influence, American Samoans have maintained their way of life, customs, and easy-going attitude. Much of life is governed by tradition - Fa’a Samoa or the Samoan way. Samoan culture, customs, and traditions are based on the importance of the extended family, and lands are managed for the common good.

RAW PACIFIC BEAUTY

American Samoa is made up of five volcanic islands and two atolls. Tutuila is the main island and boasts the capital, Pago Pago, the airport, the port, and about 95 percent of the 50,000 population. Aunu’u Island is just 2 km off the southwestern coast of Tutuila and is the smallest inhabited island in the group. It is easily accessible by boat on fine days.

The Manu’a Island Group is about 100 km east of Tutuila and includes the islands of Ofu, Olosega, and Tau. These islands are considered the most picturesque in American Samoa and have little development. There are only a few hundred people in each village, and accommodation is limited to bed-and-breakfast style. Further east is the Rose Atoll (a US National Wildlife Refuge), and to the north is Swains Island.

NATIONAL PARK WONDERS

American Samoa’s National Park is a natural treasure trove for family visitors. Run by the US National Parks Service, the 13,500-acre park includes sections of the three main islands and about 4,500 acres of reef systems. The parks are an outdoor lover’s paradise, with towering rugged volcanic mountains, lush rainforests from mountain to sea, secluded pristine beaches, remote villages, and abundant bird life.

Adventuring families will be rewarded with stunning vistas of land and sea, beautiful and rare plants, and over 35 species of resident and migratory bird life. Families should check with the National Parks of America Office in downtown Pago Pago before attempting the more difficult hikes, as local guides may be required.

Snorkelling

Fagalele Bay National Park Marine Sanctuary offers the best snorkelling on Tutuila. Beautiful coral gardens, clams, and an

abundance of fish life within easy reach of the shore make this another family ‘must-do’. Hawksbill and green sea turtles, dolphins, and humpback whales are regular visitors, and the surrounding shoreline is a birdwatcher’s paradise.

Diving

American Samoa is also home to world-class diving. Local charter companies can take you to the most popular diving sites in Fagalele Marine Sanctuary or a multitude of ‘secret’ sites that only see a handful of visitors. Families looking for next-level adventure should consider overnight trips to the more remote islands.

Fishing

With no commercial fishing allowed within 50 miles of the coast, and with a series of marine reserves around the islands, recreational fishing is about as good as it gets. Targeted species include marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, and dogtooth tuna. The fishing is good all year round, but the best time is December, January, February when they boast “10 marlin in a day” and yellowfin tuna (a prized catch anywhere) up to 90 kg.

GETTING AROUND

To really get the most from a stay on the main island, Tutuila, families are best to rent a car. This will provide easy access to many of the most beautiful spots on the island. Everyone speaks English, so it’s easy to get directions, and when you find somewhere special, it’s nice to be on your own timetable. Taxis are also available, with drivers more than happy to act as tour guides. For the adventurous, local buses (unscheduled) offer a cheap and colourful way to get around and meet the locals.

WHERE TO STAY

Accommodation ranges from beachfront traditional Samoan fales to hotel suites, boutique lodges, and apartments. For adventurous travellers, the National Park Service runs the National Park Home Stay Programme, where visitors can stay with host families and experience Samoan culture firsthand. Many lifelong friendships have developed as a result of the bonds that develop.

EXPLORATION AWAITS

American Samoa is a fascinating destination with plenty to offer family travellers who love adventure. It’s a destination for families who like to do, not just look – who want something different from the standard resort holiday and really get amongst nature. American Samoa is often sold as an add-on to Samoa but could also be considered a prime destination in its own right.

The waterfront is lined with restaurants offering everything from traditional dishes like lap lap and coconut crab to international favourites. Many restaurants are family-friendly, offering kids’ menus and play areas, which makes dining out a breeze. The markets in Port Vila are a must-visit. Discover the Wonders of Tanna

Located in the south of Vanuatu’s archipelago lies the volcanic island of Tanna. Home to one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes, Mount Yasur, Tanna is a bucket-list destination for international eco-travellers and families alike.

The lush jungle interior boasts impressive waterfalls and traditional kastom villages. The eastern coastline features vast black sand beaches and surf breaks, while the north-west coral coastline offers a dramatic marine landscape with Blue Holes, a Blue Cave, grottos, caverns, and intricate coral formations.

Nestled along this north-west coast is White Grass Ocean Resort & Spa – an 18-room resort featuring Ocean View Bures and Family Villas. The villas, built in 2019, boast two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lounge, and a broad verandah – providing all the creature comforts of home and space for the whole family.

fishermen catch fish and lobster daily. The island’s bounty is sold and traded at the Lenakel Markets, where the resort’s Chef Charlie and his team source ingredients for the Oceanview Restaurant at White Grass.

Staying active is easy as well. The resort’s Yasur Volcano Safari and Blue Cave Boat Tour are popular with families with older children, while the Tanna Highlights Tours and Kastom Village tours can be enjoyed by all ages. Complimentary use of mountain bikes, snorkels and fins, beach volleyball, 4-hole pitch ‘n’ putt golf, and pétanque will keep the family entertained too.

Simply Stunning

When the Sharma Family wanted a new place to explore, they picked Vanuatu for a stress-free option and a stunning natural environment.

What made you pick your particular island destination?

Convenience was a big factor. We chose Vanuatu because it’s easily accessible from Australia. And we chose to stay in Port Vila, as it’s easy walking distance to the markets, supermarket, ferries, and buses that get you around the island.

Was this your first family holiday there?

Yes, this is our first visit to Vanuatu.

Which property did you stay at?

Ramada Port Vila on Erakor Lagoon in Port Vila.

What was your main reason for choosing that resort?

It’s located close to central Port Vila, plus it had everything we needed. Like a great swimming pool, a restaurant on site, and also offers apartment-style rooms with a self-contained kitchens – which we used a lot.

How old are your children?

10 and 13.

What did they love most about the holiday?

Spending time in the clear, warm, stunning water around the island, be it swimming or snorkelling at the beaches, exploring the clear blue lagoons, or the cool rivers.

What were your top 3 family activities?

The Blue Lagoon was amazing, we loved it so much we went there twice during our stay.

Horse riding on the beach at Club Hippique Adventure Park. The most fun part was riding the horses in the water. And swimming in the pool at our resort, any time of the day!

What are your top tips for taking a family to this island?

Bring lots of sunscreen, snorkelling gear. But if you are not able to, that’s okay as most places provide gear for hire or use if you stay at a resort. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and travel around the island to explore!

Do you have plans to go back?

Yes, we all absolutely loved Vanuatu and we will be back again!

TANNA – NATURALLY ACTIVE

The adventures in Vanuatu extend far beyond Efate Island, with Tanna Island to the south offering a host of natural (and sometimes explosive) marvels. Families can enjoy snorkelling over pristine coral reefs, horseback riding through the jungle, discovering secluded waterfalls, and delving into a culture steeped in age-old traditions.

The highlight of Tanna is Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes. A 4WD journey followed by a brief trek leads visitors to the crater’s edge. The surroundings, covered in volcanic ash, present a surreal landscape. The volcano’s activity varies, but the most breathtaking sights are seen early in the morning or at night when the glowing lava offers a spectacular natural fireworks display.

For a standout water-based adventure, Tanna’s Blue Cave is a must-visit. Sunlight piercing through the cave’s top illuminates the water in a radiant blue hue, perfect for capturing once-in-a-lifetime photos. Remember to bring a waterproof camera!

PLACES TO STAY:

White Grass Ocean Resort

The White Grass Ocean Resort on Tanna Island is a family-friendly haven offering both comfort and adventure. The resort features family villas with ample space, catering to various family sizes. Its restaurant offers a diverse menu suitable for all ages, including children, and comes with breathtaking ocean views. The resort hosts Yasur Volcano tours and cultural village visits, allowing families to immerse themselves in local heritage. Snorkelling, kayaking, and nature walks are readily available, perfect for keeping the kids entertained. The swimming pool is particularly popular with children, and the resort’s gardens provide safe spaces for outdoor play.

SANTO: A SERENE ESCAPE

For families on a tight schedule, an inter-island flight may seem impractical. However, those who can spare the time will find including Santo in their itinerary highly rewarding. Santo boasts an even more relaxed atmosphere than Efate, offering a glimpse into a lifestyle worlds apart from the Western norm.

Travelling along the coast north of Luganville, Santo’s main town, leads to some of Vanuatu’s most stunning beaches, including the impossibly beautiful Champagne Beach. Here, the warm, crystalclear waters, fine white sands, and backdrop of distant islands against dense tropical rainforests create a magical setting that both children and adults will remember long after returning home.

The tranquility of these beaches is preserved by the absence of resorts or lodgings on the beach, ensuring peace and quiet. This serenity is only occasionally interrupted during cruise ship visits, when the beach becomes a bustling hub.

Another highlight of Santo is the blue holes along its eastern coastline. The Matevulu Blue Hole, accessible from the main road and near a former military airstrip, is one such marvel. Like Champagne Beach, it provides a haven for families. The cooler, denser freshwater offers a unique swimming experience. A major attraction for kids is the giant rope swing dangling from a tree, allowing thrilling jumps into the blue waters below.

TREE HOUSE MAGIC

For a truly unique experience, consider the treehouse accommodation in Port Orly. Perched amongst the treetops, these unique lodgings offer an exciting and memorable stay for families. Staying in a treehouse isn’t just about having a place to sleep; it’s about living out a childhood dream in an unforgettable setting.

Free and Easy

Safety, freedom, and soaking up another culture are all good reasons for the Stibbard family to head straight for Vanuatu.

What made you pick your particular island destination?

We have been travelling to and enjoying Port Vila for the last 20 years. We love the safety, freedom, and exposing our children to another culture, all just a short flight from home in Brisbane.

Was this the first time your family had holidayed there?

We’re regulars - sometimes we visit twice a year.

Which property did you stay at? Warwick Le Lagoon.

And what was your main reason for choosing it?

Warwick offers many different room types to suit all budgets, and they are all beautiful with stunning views. Being on a lagoon, it has open spaces and is safe for children to wander and explore on their own within the complex. This gives parents an extra amount of relaxing time as the children roam and chat to locals (staff), learning about the culture and how they live. It’s also close to a local village, allowing us to interact with the locals.

How old are your children? 19, 17, 15 years old.

What did they love most about the holiday?

The freedom, fantastic pools, water activities on the Erakor Lagoon, friendly staff, and approachable management willing to answer any of their questions regarding Vanuatu.

What were your top 3 family activities?

Visiting the city for the local markets to look at the fresh flowers and array of foods on offer, and the local Mummas handcraft markets. The Blue Lagoon is amazing. An around-the-island day tour visiting many beautiful beaches along the way.

What are your top tips for taking a family to this island?

Don’t forget your reef shoes. If visiting other resorts or beaches, take your own snorkel set. Island Time - don’t be in a rush; part of the charm of the island is that it operates on ‘island time’. The NiVan smile will tug at your heartstrings; they are such happy people.

Do you have plans to go back?

Yes, we’re planning on going back in May this year for our middle son’s 18th birthday.

Do you have any other comments or suggestions?

There are several great restaurants in town, only a short bus ride from Warwick. Warwick has a great restaurant on-site as well, called Wild Ginger. Warwick also has a great kids club. We don’t use it anymore due to the age of our children, but we did when the children were younger. They will also source a nanny for you.
