Beat the Heat: Makeup and Hair Tips for Island Weddings

Achieving stunning wedding day makeup in Fiji’s tropical climate is key for brides. Wedding Services Manager Lydia from Totoka Hair & Make Up shares her insights for looking your best under hot and humid conditions.

Makeup Tips: Begin with clean, moisturised, and sunscreenprotected skin. Use primer for lasting makeup. Opt for light, breathable layers to maintain a natural look. Light foundation, powder blush, and a touch of bronzer and highlighter enhance your skin’s natural beauty. Use light eyeliner and waterproof mascara, keeping Fiji’s heat in mind.

Hair Tips: Cut and color hair two weeks before the wedding for optimal styling. Wash and style your hair the night before, considering Fiji’s humid climate. Styles may not hold as usual, so trial runs are vital. Updos are recommended for beach weddings, while down styles suit indoor settings.

Other Tips: Trials are essential to ensure your desired look. Communicate any desired changes with your stylist.

Island I Do's

A Dad’s Guide to Planning the Perfect Pacific Wedding It’s one of the most important moments in a Dad’s life - that walk down the aisle with your Daughter on your arm. You want it to be right: the day perfect, the food good, and a gathering of all the people important in the lives of the bride and groom, as well as your own. When my Daughter’s partner finally proposed, thoughts quickly turned to where, when, who, and how the hell we pull off the perfect wedding. For me, being the Dad, the stag party was out of my hands, so best not worry about something I had no control over and concentrate on the wedding itself. The other thing that is out of your hands is the weather, but you can lower the chance of a weather disaster by planning around seasons and weather patterns, each unique to the location. Photos too are important. For us, this was easy. My wife, who is a wedding photographer, simply didn’t want to hand the reins over to someone else. It also meant she could hide behind the camera when I walked my daughter down the aisle rather than turning into a fountain of uncontrollable tears! Now where? We had a date or two-week period to work with, now it was all about the location. We threw around a bunch of options: firstly, the groom was Argentinian, so Argentina was in the mix; then there was Auckland, where most of the bride and groom’s friends were located; and finally, my suggestion was to have the wedding on a Pacific Island. After much deliberation, we picked the Pacific! Our options were destinations that I knew well – each with its own unique settings and options: Rarotonga, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, or Vanuatu. All these destinations fit the bill; what it now came down to was cost and availability. In the end, we chose to have the wedding at Erakor Island in Vanuatu. The little island’s beaches offered great swimming and snorkelling right in front of their all-waterfront accommodation – a series of chalets and self-contained houses that were beautifully spaced out along its shores. An island oasis with an unbelievably friendly team who knew how to look after guests, feed them, and entertain. Come wedding day, the weather was perfect. The backdrop - a perfect white sand beach with azure blue water lapping its edge. I waited anxiously at the end of the aisle with my youngest daughter and flower girl. Just 15 minutes later, the sounds of conches filled the air as a group of local warriors in full local dress escorted the bridesmaids and my daughter towards the ceremony. Right there, I knew I had made the right choice of locations. It was stunning. They escorted my Daughter to my arm and I walked her down the aisle – one of the proudest moments of my life.

Imagine a love story set on a hidden island with rustling palms, a pristine beach, and crystal-clear waters - that’s the magic of Fiji for couples seeking a dream wedding, honeymoon, or a moment to reconnect. Fiji’s vast array of romantic spots presents the delightful challenge of choosing your ideal retreat. With this in mind, we’ve outlined the most popular visitor regions for you, starting with the glorious Mamanuca Islands and ending with some of Fiji’s more under the radar locations, where couples can kick back in splendid isolation.

THE MAMANUCA ISLANDS In the early 1960s, as Fiji began to develop its tourism sector, the Mamanuca Group of islands soon became one of the most popular destinations. Fast forward nearly six decades, and these islands continue to shine as a jewel in Fiji’s tourism crown. Their charm for hosting weddings, honeymoons, and romantic getaways is still as strong as ever, making them a favourite pick for couples looking for romance in a picture-perfect setting.

THE YASAWA ISLANDS

MYSTICAL SAWA-I-LAU CAVES

Sitting to the north of the Mamanuca Group, the Yasawa Islands offer a remote and equally enchanting escape. Unlike its southern neighbours, tourism in the Yasawa Islands started much later, in 1987. This delayed development is often viewed as a blessing by visitors, as it has allowed the islands to retain an authentic charm and an untouched, pure sense of escape.

Visiting the Sawa-i-lau Caves is one of the Yasawa Islands’ must do day trips, offering a captivating blend of natural beauty and Fijian mythology. Formed over centuries, these limestone caves are a sacred site, deeply rooted in local lore and spirituality. The main cave features a stunning pool of crystal-clear water, ideal for swimming and soaking up the cave’s special ambiance. A secondary, more secluded cave, accessible through an underwater passage, offers a tranquil retreat into darkness and quietude. Many Yasawa resorts offer this guided tour. Whether you’re an adventure-seeker, a nature lover, or a cultural enthusiast, the Sawa-i-lau Caves promise an experience every couple will remember.

For those who dream of romance off the beaten path, the Yasawa Islands are a perfect choice. Here, local people live a simple life in small, remote villages, still deeply rooted in customs and practices that have been passed down through generations. The absence of modern distractions like roads, shops, and banks means life here is refreshingly simple – revolving around the community and the natural environment. And this rubs off on visitors. A unique aspect of the Yasawa Islands is that many resort staff members are locals from nearby villages. This close-knit relationship with the land and community translates into exceptional service, filled with pride and a sense of welcoming guests into their own homes. This intimate connection enhances the visitor experience, making it feel more personal and genuine. Reaching the Yasawas, though slightly more remote than the Mamanuca Islands, is a straightforward and picturesque journey. Departing from Port Denarau, the boat trip aboard the Yasawa Flyer will be part of the romantic adventure, offering stunning views as you cruise into these magnificent islands. The journey by sea gets you from ‘A’ to ‘B’, but it also sets the tone for the beauty and pure peace that the Yasawa Islands are known for. For those who can stretch their budget, the option to fly by seaplane or helicopter is the ideal way to travel - significantly reducing transit time to around 15-20 minutes, depending on the chosen resort. These aerial transfers provide a quick and majestic overview of the islands’ breathtaking landscapes, offering a spectacular start to what promises to be an unforgettable visit to one of Fiji’s most serene and picturesque regions.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK If you are the kind of couple that love experiences beyond the ordinary, exploring outside Fiji’s main tourist hotspots can be incredibly rewarding. Venturing a bit further can add an entirely new layer of excitement and uniqueness to your special occasion. Whether it’s a wedding, honeymoon, or a romantic getaway, choosing less-travelled destinations guarantees a more personalised and memorable experience. Here are a few exceptional picks to inspire your journey:

Taveuni Island Taveuni, known as Fiji’s “Garden Island,” is an ecological wonder and a haven for nature enthusiasts. It’s the third-largest island in Fiji, famous for its lush rainforests, abundant wildlife, and the stunning Tavoro Waterfalls within the Bouma National Heritage Park. Divers and snorkellers are drawn to Taveuni for the Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall, offering some of the most vibrant and diverse underwater ecosystems in the world. The island’s blend of natural beauty, traditional Fijian villages, and rare bird species, like the Orange Dove and the Silktail, make Taveuni an unmissable destination for those seeking a serene and untouched tropical paradise.

Kadavu Island Kadavu Island is a pristine, undeveloped island, offering an authentic and tranquil Fijian experience. It is renowned for the Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the world’s largest and most spectacular barrier reefs, making it a premier destination for diving and snorkelling. Kadavu’s rugged terrain, covered in dense rainforests, is ideal for eco-adventures and bird watching, with several species native to the island. The traditional Fijian way of life prevails here, with villagers living in harmony with nature.

Kadavu’s unspoiled landscapes, rich cultural experiences, and the warm hospitality of its residents make it a hidden gem for those seeking a genuine connection with Fiji’s natural and cultural heritage.

The Lau Islands The Lau Islands are a remote and sparsely populated archipelago in eastern Fiji, offering a unique and untouched experience. Comprising about sixty islands, only a few are inhabited, each with its distinct charm. The Lau Islands are known for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and secluded beaches, making them a paradise for those seeking privacy and natural beauty. The region’s isolation has preserved its traditional Fijian culture, with many islands still practicing age-old customs and crafts. Visiting the Lau Islands is like stepping into a world apart, where the pace of life slows down, and the beauty of Fiji’s natural and cultural heritage is on full display.

Savusavu Savusavu, often referred to as Fiji’s hidden paradise, is a picturesque and serene town located on the southern coast of Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second-largest island. This charming town is renowned for its natural hot springs, beautiful bay views, and lush, verdant surroundings. Savusavu offers a perfect blend of unspoiled natural beauty and a laid-back lifestyle, making it an ideal destination for travellers seeking tranquility away from the bustling tourist spots. The town’s vibrant marine life, including some of the best soft coral diving in Fiji, attracts scuba enthusiasts from around the world. Visitors can also indulge in a variety of activities such as sailing, hiking, and exploring the local markets. Savusavu’s warm and welcoming community, coupled with its stunning natural setting, provides an authentic Fijian experience that leaves visitors with a sense of peace and rejuvenation.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Zac and Becky Radisson Blu Resort

What inspired you to have a South Pacific Wedding? We wanted to get married in Fiji because we wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather and also have the opportunity to enjoy a holiday with friends and family. I also loved the idea that it was a package and it was all organised for you, with only a few options to pick from.

What made you pick that specific island? We picked to get married at the Radisson Blu Resort on Denarau Island.

What made you pick that specific resort? We went with Radisson Blu Resort because of the reviews and how everyone said it was family-friendly as we have a young daughter and lots of young family attending too.

What are some of the advantages of getting married in the islands? We wanted to get married on Denarau because it gave our guests lots of options for accommodation as well as an easy commute to the airport from the resort for guests.

Did you stay on the same island for your honeymoon? No, we actually went down the coast.

What did you love most about getting married in the islands? How friendly and easy it was. I loved the no complications of planning the wedding and the food was amazing.

What were some of the special touches that you could only get in the islands? Probably the scenery, it was so beautiful looking out

over the water for the ceremony, cocktail time, and reception.

What was the most romantic time or place during your honeymoon? I think we enjoyed the beach, we stayed down by

Natadola Beach and it was beautiful.

Looking back, was there anything you would do differently? No, not at all! It was a perfect wedding!

What are your top five tips for planning an island wedding? 1. Look around and see what fits your budget, make sure it also fits your guests’ budget. 2. Pick a resort that’s easy for guests to get to from the airport. 3. Make sure you find a package that provides mostly everything, so you don’t have to do anything yourself. 4. Check out the reviews for the resort and also check out the Facebook page for Fiji brides. So many helpful brides! 5. Just relax and don’t worry about anything, it will all turn out amazing on the day.

Tying the knot

Getting married in Vanuatu is a straightforward process. However, it’s a process that’s best started a few months ahead. First, an Intended Marriage Form needs to be filled out – the resort’s wedding coordinator will be able to pass this on to you – and then this form needs to be lodged with the Vanuatu government at least 28 days prior to the wedding day. From there a couple will need to be in Vanuatu at least three working days prior to the wedding. Plus the following will also need to be provided: • Birth certificates and valid passports • Divorce papers (if applicable) • Death certificate (if a previous spouse has passed away) • One witness for each person to prove your identity

TANNA: SPARKS WILL FLY While the charm of Port Vila and dramatic landscapes of Efate are tempting, adventurous couples wanting to venture further will find an entirely new level of excitement on Tanna. For those with time to spare, Tanna offers a truly memorable experience. Even if time is tight, a day trip—whisking in and out by air—is still immensely rewarding. For thrill-seekers and nature lovers, the island of Tanna is a genuine playground. It’s home to the formidable Mt Yasur, Vanuatu’s most famous and active volcano. Adventurers can ascend the mountain on foot in just 45 minutes, trekking up to witness Earth’s raw power. For a

less strenuous experience, you can drive a four-wheel-drive vehicle close to the crater’s edge, where you can observe the breathtaking spectacle of magma erupting into the sky at regular intervals. For those looking to swap the heat for something more refreshing, Tanna’s Blue Cave offers a spellbinding escape. Bathed in sunlight that streams through an opening in the cave’s ceiling, the waters inside are transformed into a stunning, luminescent blue. This natural wonder isn’t just a sight to behold but also an unmissable photography opportunity—so bringing a GoPro or a waterproof camera is a must. Beyond the cave’s tranquil waters, the fun continues with purpose-built platforms that tempt the bold to dive into the crystalline sea below.

PLACES TO STAY White Grass Ocean Resort and Spa Sitting on a coral bluff along the sheltered northwest coast of Tanna, White Grass Ocean Resort and Spa is an authentic retreat that couples will fall in love with. It provides easy access to coral reefs and natural rock pools, perfect for snorkelling and diving at low tide. Accommodation options are close to the Ocean View Restaurant and Bar—the resort’s social hub. A visit to Nabisa Spa is a must for couples, and the resort is home to the island’s premier dive operation. On top of all that, the resort offers a number of excursions, including game fishing, island tours that visit the coffee hulling plant of Tanna organic coffee, Lenakel Market, and the giant Banyan tree. There’s also a cultural experience that includes the rituals of black magic, and of course, a volcano tour.

Mangoes is a carefully designed adults only, full service resort of just 29 beautifully appointed boutique bungalows, with a choice of panoramic views over the Erakor lagoon or tropical-lush gardens. Many of the romantically louvered bungalows feature their own plunge pool, and thoughtful comforts of separate sitting areas and furnished terraces that make you feel immediately pampered.

SANTO: AN ENCHANTING ESCAPE

PLACES TO STAY

Just a 50-minute flight from Port Vila, the island of Santo awaits couples eager to stray off the well-beaten track. If the laid-back vibe of Port Vila and Efate has captivated you, prepare for an even slower pace on Santo. Moreover, this island boasts some of the most exquisite beaches in Vanuatu—often deserted, offering a private slice of paradise.

Aore Island Resort

Diving and snorkelling enthusiasts will be in heaven. The island’s rich World War II history has left a playground of wrecks to explore. Million Dollar Point offers tons of dumped surplus army equipment—Jeeps, plane parts—ready for an underwater investigation. Every journey to Santo should include time at Port Olry—a beachfront village adorned with brilliant white sand, charming offshore islets, and a selection of quaint local eateries. When the tide retreats, a walkway to Malet Island appears, inviting you to venture over with a champagne picnic to savour on this secluded haven. There, you can relax on the pristine sands or snorkel along the colourful reef. For a dash of adventure, hire a kayak from a local restaurant and set off towards Malmas Island, where you may find yourselves swimming alongside turtles.

Just a short boat ride from Luganville, Aore Island Resort is a charming, family-operated sanctuary. For couples seeking tranquillity and intimacy, the adults-only Studio Bungalows offer the ideal retreat, nestled either along the pristine beachfront or tucked away amidst lush tropical flora. For those wanting some pampering, the Aore Day Spa is a sanctuary within the resort, offering a serene space for relaxation, enriched by the time-honoured Melanesian art of massage. Couples dreaming of a tropical wedding will discover that Aore Island Resort specialises in crafting bespoke nuptials. With the assistance of a dedicated in-house wedding planner, every celebration will reflect the couple’s personality.

The mystical blue holes of Santo are a romantic highlight not to be missed. Carved from limestone and fed by springs, these pools dazzle with their surreal, cool blue waters—a perfect setting for swimming, snorkelling, or a kayak expedition upriver. Nanda Blue Hole features a cosy café, while other holes provide swings and diving platforms, adding a touch of adrenalin to the tranquil waters. Santo also has arguably Vanuatu’s most beautiful beach, aptly named Champagne Beach. Picture warm, translucent waters, powdery white sand, and offshore islands in the distance, all surrounded by dark green tropical rainforest. It’s magic. And if it were anywhere else in the world, it would be crammed with resorts, shops, cafés, restaurants, and thousands of people. But in Santo, the crowd factor is non-existent—except during cruise ship visits—which couples should plan to avoid anyway.

AORE ISLAND RESORT

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Ellesha Bhana & Emanuel Tur Erakor Island Resort Vanuatu

What inspired you to have a South Pacific island wedding?

After spending many holidays in the Pacific, we fell in love with island life. The people, the culture, the water – the South Pacific has become our chosen second home.

What made you pick that specific island?

We looked at wedding locations and packages in Niue, Fiji, and Vanuatu. But we decided on Vanuatu for the wedding package at Erakor, the weather, and flight options.

What made you pick that specific resort?

The location and the packages they offered. Also, their amazing responsiveness to all our queries helped a lot!

What are some of the advantages of getting married in the islands? Number one is the obvious – for the same price as a wedding in New Zealand, you can have a wedding and spend a week in paradise with your family and friends.

Did you stay on the same island for your honeymoon?

We spent a week at Erakor with our wedding party. We’re planning our Honeymoon in South East Asia in January.

What did you love most about getting married in the islands?

It is actual paradise! A perfect, beautiful location, amazing people, and the ability to spend extra time with the people you love, adventuring and relaxing. Lita, our wedding planner at Erakor, made the entire day incredible and seamless. Every detail was so perfect.

What were some of the special touches that you could only get in the islands? Getting to spend extra time on a tropical island with

your favourite people, experiencing a different culture, enjoying a relaxed island vibe. Popping out for a quick snorkel on the reef before you walk down the aisle!

What was the most romantic time or place during your honeymoon? Honeymoon in January – location TBC! Looking back, was there anything you would do differently?

Absolutely nothing. The whole day ended up perfect thanks to the amazing staff at Erakor, the stunning location, our incredible family for all their help planning, and our insanely talented photographer - Olga.

What are your top five tips for planning an island wedding? 1. Find a package that suits your needs/style/location preference. 2. Make sure the resort is highly communicative (the last thing you want is extra stress waiting to hear back about things). 3. Create a checklist for everything you need so you can slowly chip away at the details. 4. Use an online-based invitation (we used Paperless Post) as that way you can continue to easily communicate with your guests in the lead-up with details and travel tips. 5. Don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the process. Not only are you planning your wedding day, but also an incredible holiday for your family and friends that no one will forget.

Connection Tying the knot

The legal requirements of getting married in the Cook Islands are straightforward, but there a few things that Kiwis should note: • If a bride or groom is under the age of 21 they will need written parental consent. • An application for a marriage licence must be made in person to the Registrar of Marriages at least three working days before the wedding, New Zealanders cannot apply for a licence before they arrive. • Applicants for a wedding licence must produce a passport, and if divorced, a copy of the Decree Absolute.

The Cook Islands are a top choice for couples wanting a touch of romance. With warm sun and amazing natural beauty, it’s a setting that’s hard to beat. But it’s not just about the views or the beaches. Here, couples find a real, heartfelt local vibe they can be a part of. While some places in the Pacific provide a resort-focused travel experience, the Cook Islands put you right in the mix with the locals living their laid-back island life. Sure, the Cook Islands have fine resorts, hotels, and unique stays for weddings, honeymoons, or just getting away but what stands out is how easy and fun it is to dive into local life. Imagine strolling to a local café and grabbing a freshly brewed coffee, having a chat with some locals at a beachside bar like Charlie’s, or popping into a local supermarket to pick up some supplies. Consider renting a scooter and just seeing where the road takes you, whether it’s quiet beaches, funky art galleries or roadside eateries. One thing’s for sure, couples will have a blast discovering the islands side by side. And for those planning to say “I do”, your wedding day will, of course, be the standout moment. In the Cook Islands, there’s no need to stress about the details. With top-notch planners, venues, food, drinks, and places to stay, you can trust that you’ll find just the romantic experience you have in mind, and it will all be taken care of.

KIA ORANA RAROTONGA All international flights to the Cook Islands land in Rarotonga. With a circumference of just 32 km, the island is super easy to explore. And you’ll do so against a backdrop of spectacular forest-clad mountains that plunge into a turquoise lagoon. The stunning tropical landscape provides couples with all the usual Pacific Island water activities, alongside trekking, mountain biking, 4x4 safari tours and fascinating cultural experiences. Of course, couples can choose to be as busy as they wish. Relax at your resort accommodation by the pool, enjoy the beaches near your

intimate water bungalow, or admire the views from your luxury villa. Take a glass-bottom day cruise to surrounding motus or head beyond the reefs that surround Rarotonga’s white sandy beaches, where the quick drop into deep water creates the perfect diving and fishing location - there really is something for every couple. Rarotonga is a great place for weddings, there is a wide variety of wedding packages to choose from and lots of accommodation options to suit the needs of family and friends in attendance. And if you want to add something extra special for your honeymoon, just a 40-minute plane ride away is the spectacular Aitutaki, the island that tops many bucket lists.

MURI NIGHT MARKETS Nestled in the heart of Muri Beach, the iconic Muri Night Markets offer couples a fun (and delicious) evening experience. With an array of local stalls, it’s a true feast for the senses. Couples can savour traditional Cook Islands cuisine, listen to the gentle strumming of ukuleles, and pick up a handcrafted treasure or two. The market’s vibrant atmosphere, combined with its rich tapestry of culture and crafts, makes it a perfect spot for couples to wander hand-in-hand. Dive into the local flavours, share a plate or two, and soak up the authentic island vibe. Whether it’s enjoying a quiet meal under the stars or sitting back and watching the world go by, Muri Night Markets promise a memorable evening for all.

TURTLE TIME One of Rarotonga’s highlight experiences is the turtle snorkelling excursion with Charlotte Piho Tours. Charlotte, a Cook Islands local, is not only a skilled underwater photographer but also a devoted marine conservationist. Her turtle tour perfectly blends these dual passions. The expedition is centred at Avaavaroa Passage on Rarotonga’s picturesque south coast. Historically, this gap in the reef was a trusted entry for early Polynesian navigators. Nowadays, the channel’s tidal movements bring a consistent influx of marine nutrients, nourishing the resident turtles, fish, and majestic eagle rays. Couples can dive deep into the marine wonders of the Cook Islands, observing turtles in their natural environment.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Alex Melrose and Marianela Acevedo Cordero Muri Beach, Rarotonga

What inspired you to have a Pacific Island wedding? There were quite a few reasons why we chose a Pacific wedding. To start with, the wedding was in August, which can be cold and gloomy in New Zealand. A warm, sunny tropical island sounded much better! I’m from Costa Rica and the Pacific Islands have a very similar feel to our Caribbean coast - the people are friendly, the seafood is amazing, and the lush landscape is similar too. We also wanted to make the wedding a holiday experience for our guests, including my family who flew over from Costa Rica.

What made you pick that specific island? We had both been to the Cook Islands before and we loved Rarotonga. Of course, it’s beautiful, but it’s also a really easy place to holiday. There are plenty of activities for ourselves and our guests who made the most of the local attractions. That included snorkelling with turtles, a big dinner for family and friends at Charlie’s, and a cultural dinner show.

What made you pick that specific resort? We wanted to be with family, so we rented a villa when we first arrived. The day before the wedding we stayed at Muri Beach.

What are some of the advantages of getting married in the islands? Did you stay on the same island for your honeymoon? No, we plan to honeymoon in Egypt, but we are just waiting for the right time to travel to that part of the world.

What were some of the special touches that you could only get in the islands? Being married on a motu in Muri Lagoon was special. Such a stunning location. Plus, I was paddled to the motu in a traditional vaka, which was amazing.

Looking back, was there anything you would do differently? I’ve been asked this question quite a few times, and honestly, we wouldn’t change a thing. We loved every minute of the wedding and the holiday we enjoyed at the same time. It was fantastic to spend quality time with family and friends from both sides and get to know each other. The weather turned it on and the on-the-ground wedding coordinators had everything organised, which made the experience stress-free.

What are your top five tips for planning an island wedding? We were recommended a wedding planner by the wedding venue. She did a brilliant job, but occasionally it would take her a day or two for her to reply. We only found out just before the wedding that she was actually based in New Zealand! It was just a small thing and the wedding went off without a hitch, but you might want to just doublecheck this detail!

Enchanting Shores

In the heart of the Pacific, Samoa stands as a symbol of romantic adventures. Picture volcanic highlands descending into lush valleys, leading to pristine shores dotted with hidden coves. Imagine vivid burst of tropical flora and the soothing sounds of cascading waterfalls joining winding rivers.

Tying the knot

Marriages in Samoa are legally recognised internationally. To be married in Samoa, couples will need to apply for a marriage licence with the Ministry of Justice in Apia, at least 14 days prior to your wedding day – but no more than three months in advance. What you will need: a copy of both partners’ passports and birth certificates; death certificates (of past spouses) or Decree Absolute (if divorced); and a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (from your country).

Samoa’s natural beauty remains largely untouched by commercial hustle, offering a tranquillity rarely found elsewhere. It’s the perfect backdrop for igniting new passions or rekindling longstanding ones. For those in search of romantic escapes, Samoa certainly delivers. Resorts here excel at crafting unforgettable weddings and perfecting the art of pampering couples in search of a peaceful getaway. Yet, Samoa’s charm goes beyond its luxurious accommodations. Whether celebrating love or simply seeking relaxation, the island’s unique activities and adventures are always at hand, ready to enhance a couples’ romantic experience. Samoa is a true Pacific treasure where love and adventure seamlessly blend.

NATURE’S EMBRACE Lying on a hidden beach or enjoying a cocktail by the pool - both are classic romantic moments. Add a dash of adventure, and the experience becomes even more memorable. For adrenaline junkies, surfing or exploring underwater worlds via scuba diving are top activities. Those looking for a more relaxed pace can find Samoa’s trails calling out to hikers. Tranquil waterways welcome kayakers, and cyclists will love the scenic routes. Plus, immersing oneself in the island’s rich culture brings an added dimension to the journey. To Sua Trench is a genuine Samoan landmark. A spectacular natural wonder, it’s a must-visit on the southern coast of Upolu. This mammoth natural pool connects to the vast ocean through an underground channel, producing a gentle undulation in the water. After you descend the wooden ladder, you’ll be rewarded with a unique mix of fresh and saltwater that occasionally offers lukewarm pockets. However, the real treat is lying in the water and looking up: the combination of rock, lush greenery, and open sky creates a breathtaking panorama. It’s an invitation to simply float and soak in the beauty.

70

Pacific Romance

Venture a bit further along Upolu’s southern coast, and Lalomanu Beach awaits. With its iconic outline of swaying palms set against pristine white sand, it’s no surprise it ranks among Samoa’s best beaches. And truth be told, Lalomanu rivals any beach across the Pacific. For couples watching their budget, local accommodations like Litia Sini Beach Resort, Taufua Beach Fales, and Taufia’s Beach Bungalows provide an authentic experience without a hefty price tag. They might not be 5-star, but they offer excellent value for money. Pedalling through Samoa is another romantic adventure to consider. Cycling is not only cost-effective and eco-friendly, but it also reveals some of Samoa’s hidden gems. As you ride, family-owned markets pop up, offering refreshing coconuts and an array of fresh fruits. And when the tropical heat intensifies, natural freshwater pools are perfect for a refreshing dip. The island’s main roads are mostly smooth, barring the odd pothole. Safety equipment is available for hire, and many resorts even offer bicycles. For a more organised outing, guided cycling tours are available. For those keen on aquatic adventures, Manoa Tours is the answer. Dive into surfing with their expert lessons or explore the island’s top surf spots. But it’s not all about catching waves. Their turtle tours provide a peaceful journey through calm lagoons, showcasing Samoa’s magnificent turtles and diverse marine life in their natural settings. It’s an experience that leaves a lasting impression. As the day cools, the lively city of Apia calls. Sample culinary delights at the Maketi Fou on Fugalei Street. Treat your taste buds to juicy exotic fruits like pawpaw or savour the sweetness of ladyfinger bananas. If you’re shopping for gifts, a brief walk leads to a bustling flea market. From traditional warrior weapons and lava lavas to beautiful jewellery and genuine Samoan musical artefacts, there’s something for everyone. And for early birds, the Apia Fish Market welcomes visitors from 6 am, showcasing a range of oceanic offerings.

Say ‘I Do’ in a South Pacific Paradise

Saletoga Sands also understands the uniqueness of each couple’s love story, which is why they offer a variety of wedding packages tailored to suit intimate unions or grand celebrations. SAMOA’S OFFSHORE TREASURES Navigating the waters around Samoa’s main islands reveals hidden gems: the islands of Nu’utele, Nu’uala, Fanuatapu, Fatuanava, Nu’ulopa, Lepuia’i, and Nuusafee. While off the main trail, these islands are easily accessible. Take a local water taxi or join a guided tour. For kayaking enthusiasts, some islands are even within paddling distance. These islands stand out for their untouched beauty. Dive into clear waters and discover colourful coral gardens, ideal for a private snorkelling session. Or if you’re seeking peace, pick a secluded beach, land your kayak, and enjoy the tranquil setting, with the gentle sound of waves lapping the shore. In Samoa, every turn promises a new find.

PLACES TO STAY

Savaii. A journey back in time.

Amoa Resort

Most international visitors arrive at Faleolo International Airport on Upolu, so it’s understandable why many choose to stay on this island. However, in doing so, they often overlook the untouched beauty of Savai’i.

Amoa Resort offers a unique wedding experience by the lagoon. Couples can tie the knot on the resort’s 30-foot boat, surrounded by the clear waters with a few close friends and family. After the ceremony, guests can head to the open-air restaurant near the pool for a delicious meal. The resort, with its Pacific village vibe, is also a perfect place for honeymooners. They can relax, go snorkelling, fishing, and swimming. Anyone who chooses Amoa Resort doesn’t just enjoy a wedding or a honeymoon; they secure a timeless tale of Samoan enchantment.

Locals often liken Savai’i to Upolu from 30 years ago, highlighting its relaxed and calm ambiance. Many visitors find this version of Samoa to be their favourite. Reaching the island is straightforward. From Mulifanua Wharf, a mere 10 minutes from the airport, a ferry transports you to Salelologa in under an hour. Salelologa is the primary town, making it the ideal spot to procure food and drinks, rent a car, or gather supplies for your journey. The local market is also an excellent place for fresh produce. Savai’i is the largest of the Samoan islands, brimming with breathtaking views. Active couples will appreciate the Tafua Peninsula Rainforest Reserve, where lush forests meet a rugged coastline adorned with sea caves, arches, and blowholes. While there, keep an eye out for fruit bats. The reserve also boasts picturesque walks, including a hike to the Tafua Savai’i crater. History enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the Tia Seu Ancient Mound or Pulemelei Mound. Standing over 12 metres tall, this stone structure is the largest ancient building in Polynesia and is conveniently located near the Olemoe Falls on the southeastern coast.

Le Lagato Resort & Spa Enchanting, idyllic, and refreshingly unique, Le Lagato Resort & Spa might be a bit off-the-beaten-track, but any couple celebrating their union against the backdrop of Le Lagato’s shimmering lagoon will instantly realise it was worth the effort! This boutique sanctuary, comprised of just 10 bungalows and 2 family rooms, is nestled between coconut palms and vast blue waters. Off to the side of the bungalows lies a beautiful beach, complemented by an adjacent lagoon that provides splendid swimming on any tide. It’s a dreamy location for weddings or honeymoons. There’s also no shortage of activities. Whether it’s a relaxing sunset spa treatment, lounging by the captivating infinity pool, or engaging in thrilling ventures like kayaking and paddleboarding, there’s always something to keep couples entertained.

Savai’i is also graced with mesmerising waterfalls like the Afu Aau Falls, nestled within a dense forest. The waterfall cascades into a natural pool, ideal for a refreshing swim. Visitors can reach the falls with a 20-minute walk, or drive directly to the pool with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. When the waves are strong on the southwestern coast, the Alofaaga blowholes are a sight to see. Water shoots up to 30 metres high from the blowholes. Locals often toss coconuts into them, watching them get shot into the air. You can find the entrance to the blowholes in Taga village.

TAHITI BY SEA

HUAHINE: PURE RELAXATION

Tahiti’s most enchanting experiences aren’t just confined to its shores! Indeed, venturing the island by water is an unforgettable adventure. Typically, Tahiti’s cruise ships are more compact, not resembling the colossal vessels that host thousands. Such a size offers a closer, more personal voyage, allowing these ships to venture into locations off-limits to larger vessels.

Huahine is filled with lush forests, untamed landscapes, whitesand beaches and quaint villages and is one of The Islands of Tahiti’s best-kept secrets. Relatively unchanged by the modern world, Huahine offers a slower, more tranquil pace of old Polynesia with only eight small villages scattered across the island, the few residents welcome visitors with genuine kindness. Discover a wide range of water and land activities from a sunset cruise, deep-sea fishing, and surfing to hiking, horseback riding, trekking and kiteboarding.

Windstar Cruises offers a range of boutique cruises, with each of Windstar Cruises yachts accommodating between 148 to 342 guests. The intimacy provides luxuries of time, space and freedom to immerse yourself in both the journey and the destination. It’s a great way to explore multiple islands without needing to fly from island to island and explore all that the islands of Tahiti have to offer. Aranui Cruises have been introducing the enchanting Marquesas Islands to avid adventurous travellers, combining the comforts and modern conveniences of a cruise ship while providing a cargo service to remote areas. The ship accommodates just 230 passengers, offering an intimate and casual setting for guests to explore the beautiful islands whilst also acting as a lifeline for tiny communities on the more remote islands of French Polynesia.

In 2009 a change in policy meant that couples visiting New Caledonia could hold a civil wedding ceremony. Applications are made to the Nouméa City Authorities five to six months in advance, via an email to the Town Hall Records Authority. Proof of civil status and a certificate of residence is required. An officially approved translator (French/English) will be present at the ceremony. After the ceremony, a certified transcription of their marriage certificate then needs to be taken to the consulate of their country.

Niue is more than just a South Pacific paradise; it’s a slice of heaven where the clock slows down to match your heartbeat. Time becomes your friend, not your enemy. It’s the ideal spot to turn to your loved one and say, “Hey, we’ve got all the time in the world.” Indeed, this coral island offers visitors a complete contrast to the busy travel destinations in other parts of the Pacific. It provides couples a rare sanctuary of peace without the crowds. In Niue, you won’t find yourself sharing a resort or tourist hotspots with hundreds of others; instead, expect secluded coves, intimate dining experiences, and private astro-tours with the stars as your only competition for attention! It’s a place for unadulterated relaxation, heartfelt hospitality, and comfort without the glitz. It’s an island that invites you to step off the beaten path and into a world where the focus is on genuine experiences and the luxury of sheer simplicity.

HIO COVE © NIUE TOURISM

GET YOUR BEARINGS Sizewise, Niue is surprisingly large (it’s four times bigger than Rarotonga). But with a permanent population of around 1600, Niue is the kind of place where you arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend. There’s plenty to see and do, so that’s why couples should start their Niue experience with an orientation tour. You’ll soak up local knowledge and discover hidden corners where nature’s artistry will take your breath away. You’ll get the inside word on the best swimming and dining spots on the island, and learn about Niue’s history, culture, and tight-knit community. By the end of the tour, you’ll be ready to set out on your own. There are a couple of tour companies operating on the island, and the friendly folk at the Niue Tourism office in Alofi (the main town) will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

GO FORTH AND EXPLORE Armed with your newfound island knowledge, you can hire a car and explore to your heart’s content. (Quick tip – it’s best to book a car before arriving in Niue). The roads have a few potholes, but who cares? There’s no rush hour here, and you won’t find a single traffic light to halt

your romantic journey. Consider it an adventure for two, complete with the island’s playlist of wind and waves as your backing track. As you explore, you’ll come across corners of paradise that most people only dream of. Places like Limu Pools and Avaiki Cave are not just spots on a map; they’re sanctuaries for your soul. Niue’s unique landscape is devoid of rivers and streams, which means there is no sediment running off into the ocean. This makes Niue’s water clarity quite astounding, with visibility up to 80 metres. The water is a mesmerising blend of deep blues and crystal-clear turquoise that you have to see to believe. A low-tide swim in Avaiki Cave feels like a pilgrimage to the heart of nature itself. And to reiterate, there’s no need to rush. Take your time and witness these amazing coastal landscapes change with the ebb and flow of the tides. Each pool transforms into a living, breathing entity, teeming with fish that dart through the water like bursts of living colour. You’ll find spots so hidden and private that they seem like they’ve been waiting just for you. No visit to Niue is complete without embarking on two signature walks. The first is Togo Chasm, a ‘proper’ trek that requires sturdy walking shoes. But once you descend the steep ladder and enjoy the sandy cove below, you’ll agree it was worth the effort. The panoramic views along the rock tops on your way to the chasm are like nature’s masterpiece painted just for you. On the other hand, Talava Arches are more accessible but equally impressive. Aim to arrive at low tide and take your time exploring

this natural phenomenon. A couple of hours here will feel like a stroll through a different world. The arches are a spectacular blend of form and function, sculpted by Mother Nature herself. If you’re after vistas without the exertion, steer towards Ana’ana Lookout up the coast from the Scenic Matavai Resort. During a big swell at high tide, you can watch the ocean send fountains of water skyward through the blowholes. There’s something almost therapeutic about witnessing the ocean’s raw power from such a vantage point. This spot isn’t just for panoramic views; it also makes for an Instagram-worthy backdrop for wedding photos or getaway selfies. For those visiting between April and September, the island provides the incredible experience of swimming with whales, while the resident spinner dolphins tend to hang out all year round. One of the striking features of whale-watching here is the proximity to these majestic creatures. Niue’s unique underwater topography, where the reef abruptly descends into the deep ocean, allows you to spot whales as close as 20 metres from the shore in certain areas. If you want to get even closer, local whale watch operators can take you out on the water. When conditions are right, you will also have the chance to get in the water with the whales as they rest and play. Niue is that rare gem - a holiday destination that hasn’t been overcommercialised or stripped of its natural charm. It’s an island paradise where couples can escape the tourist throngs and find a secluded slice of heaven to call their own. Indeed, Niue isn’t just a place; it’s a feeling. A feeling that resonates deeply with couples who choose to visit this South Pacific oasis.

© NIUE TOURISM

STARS IN YOUR EYES Niue holds the distinction of being the world’s first ‘Dark Sky Nation,’ having received formal accreditation from the International Dark-Sky Association. Stargazing is deeply interwoven into the fabric of Niuean culture, serving environmental, health, and particularly cultural purposes. And it also makes for a unique experience for visiting couples. The island offers guided astro-tours led by knowledgeable community members. During these tours, couples will be treated to a celestial spectacle that includes the mesmerising Milky Way, along with eyecatching features like the large and small Magellanic Clouds and the Andromeda constellation.

SAMPLE THE LOCAL DROP After years of relying solely on imported brews, Niue now boasts its own locally-owned brewery, Inu Hake. Highlights of their unique brew collection include a vanilla chocolate stout, a honey-enriched beer, and a tropical concoction featuring pineapple and coconut. Niue’s vanilla and honey are some of the best in the world, and these local flavours are showcased through many local sips and bites. For couples eager to explore these unique flavours, the brewery provides tasting trays.

PLACES TO STAY Scenic Matavai Resort From the moment you step in, the warmth from the staff envelops you. The resort does hospitality the way only Niue can: unpretentiously and wholeheartedly. Your welcome drink isn’t just any beverage; it’s fresh coconut water served right from the shell. The room designs amplify the beauty of the ocean beyond. The generous layouts, high ceilings, and balconies offering views through the palm trees to the azure waters below will remind you why you chose Niue. The onsite Dolphin Restaurant and Bar is where the resort’s culinary magic happens, and it’s tough to find a more impressive view.

Lau’s Getaway For those who fancy something smaller yet equally exquisite, Lau’s Getaway offers two cliff-edge villas—their vibrant blue exterior means you can spot them from a distance. The panoramic ocean views are second to none, and the private deck bathtub offers a front-row seat to the sunset. It’s a setting that practically demands a toast with a chilled bottle of Champagne.

BITE TIME For its size, Niue has a surprisingly good selection of eateries. There’s something to suit most tastes, and the food is fresh and flavoursome. Local seafood is an obvious highlight—the fishing charter operators supply line-caught tuna, wahoo, and mahimahi to local cafés and restaurants.

Washaway Café On a lazy Sunday, couples should make their way to the Washaway Café at Avatele Beach for a burger that tastes like freedom. The honesty box bar there speaks volumes about the local culture—laid-back, trusting, and endlessly inviting.

Kaiika When you’re in a place where fresh fish is delivered directly to your door, you have the crucial ingredients for creating a quality Japanese restaurant. In Niue, Kai Ika is that place. But on top of these fine raw ingredients, they also employ a top-class sushi chef directly from Japan. The combination produces a mouthwatering mix of nigiri, sashimi, sushi, chirashi, and tempura. Kai Ika is open for lunch and dinner, so there’s no excuse to miss it.

Namukulu Cottages At the far end of the island, tucked in an oasis of serenity, lie the Namukulu Cottages. It’s like stepping into a pictureperfect postcard, with each cottage boasting its own expansive deck. If the idea of having both a swimming pool and close proximity to natural attractions like Matapa Chasm and Limu Pools appeals to you, then you’ve found your perfect haven..

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Adam and Lauren Novata Scenic Matavai Resort, Niue

What inspired you to have a South Pacific Wedding? Following our first visit to Niue in 2018, we decided that we would visit Niue every two years. However, the pandemic had different plans for us. So, when we planned this holiday, we decided to make our visit even more special and elope.

What made you pick that specific island? Not only do we love Niue, but it also holds greater significance as we are both of Niuean descent on the paternal side of our families.

What made you pick that specific resort? We have previously stayed at Scenic Matavai Resort and always talked about how beautiful it would be to get married there. So, when we booked our most recent holiday, it was a no-brainer, especially since the elopement package was all-inclusive with our stay.

What are some of the advantages of getting married in the islands? The most significant advantage is the memories made and shared. Even though we eloped and did not have our children or family present, the people at the resort and in Niue made us feel we were at home, celebrating with our nearest and dearest. Not to mention, you have beautiful warm weather, stunning views, and activities to make it more memorable.

What did you love most about getting married in the islands? For us, it was the people of Niue. Following our ceremony, there was not one person in Niue who did not congratulate us on our marriage. It made us feel more connected to the island and the people.

What were some of the special touches that you could only get in the islands? Beautiful views and warm weather.

What was the most romantic time or place during your honeymoon? This would have to be sunsets and cocktails. As cheesy as it sounds, this was quality time for both of us to take in our daily adventures, reflect on our special day, and plan what was to come next in our lives.

Looking back, was there anything you would do differently? We would have had our children there.

What are your top five tips for planning an island wedding? 1. Have a wedding planner. 2. Check the weather patterns for that time/date. 3. Plan a day of activities; don’t just focus on the ceremony. Make it a whole day celebration. 4. Ensure that it is what both of you want, not what others may want. 5. Laugh if something does not go to plan, because no doubt the majority of the day will go to plan.

A couple must obtain a marriage licence when they arrive in Hawai’i. This can be done from a marriage licence agent (there are many agents on each island and they can be found online or an appointment can be arranged by your wedding coordinator). Note: you have to appear together to obtain the marriage licence. As a rule, there is no waiting period for your licence, it is granted on application. • Bride and groom need to be over the age of 18 years – otherwise a birth certificate and written consent from both parents, a legal guardian or a family court judge is required. • Proof of age – Passport, drivers licence or birth certificate. • If either partner has been married before, a divorce decree is required. • Once the marriage licence is obtained, you have 30 days to get legally married in Hawai’i.

THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

The island of Maui calls couples with its pristine beaches and dreamy accommodations. While it’s acknowledged as the second most frequented island after Oʻahu, its charm is not solely rooted in its popular sites but also its lesser-known treasures.

The Big Island of Hawaii offers a unique blend of contrasting landscapes. On one side, visitors are welcomed by the refreshing ambiance of dense rainforests, while the other showcases the dramatic spectacle of volcanic terrains. This combination creates a perfect destination for those seeking both adventure and relaxation.

As many of our readers will be aware, the devastating wildfires of 2023 devastated the historic town of Lahaina. However, as the community starts on a long road to recovery, couples are enjoying the allure of other Maui destinations like Kapalua, Kihei, and Wailea. Where to begin? Imagine beginning your day at the Haleakala Visitor Centre, where the first light of dawn paints the dormant volcano in hues of gold and crimson. Such moments, where the sky puts on a captivating show of colours, become etched in memory. For those considering a heartfelt proposal, it’s hard to find a setting more poetic. Adventure-bound couples will find the Road to Hana irresistible. Whether they choose a relaxed self-drive or a narrated van expedition, there will be countless moments worth capturing. The cascading beauty of waterfalls, such as Twin Falls and Lower Puohokamoa Falls, offers stunning backdrops. And vistas, particularly from places like Makahiku Falls, capture the essence of this journey.

Many are captivated by the Crater Rim Drive Tour, which frames the expansive Kilauea crater, a reminder of its 2018 eruption that etched a chapter in the island’s geologic tale. For a bird’s-eye perspective of the island’s volcanic terrains, helicopter journeys stand out as a top recommendation. Moving away from the island’s fiery embrace, serene oases beckon. KAUAI Perched at the northern end of the Hawaiian chain, Kaua’i unfolds as an Eden for couples with a love for the great outdoors. It’s a land where lush rainforests flourish, majestic valleys and peaks have evolved into awe-inspiring shapes, rivers meander gracefully, waterfalls gush into pristine pools, and even a Pacific version of the Grand Canyon stands tall. It comes as little surprise that cinematic masterpieces like Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean chose this as their scenic canvas. Due to the rugged landscapes and imposing cliffs of its Northern Coast, a complete road encircling the island remains a dream. (Only about 10 percent of Kaua’i is reachable by car). While this might seem restrictive, for couples it’s a silver lining, preserving vast areas of this paradise exclusively for hikers, cyclists, and paddlers.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel – The Big Island Built in 1965 on a stunning stretch of pristine white sand, Hawaii’s first resort, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, has stood the test of time. Its blend of sports and beach activities, handcrafted cocktails and amazing ocean views keeps couples coming back time and time again.

In this case, flawless five-star luxury, exceptional oceanside dining, a private beach with a water sports centre, and a 5,000-squarefoot infinity pool. And not to mention, personal butler service.

The Kalalau trail, stretching 18 kilometers alongside the Napali Coast, is considered one of America’s top hiking experiences. Originating from Ke’e Beach, it carves its way through lush valleys and against high sea cliffs, finishing at the serene Kalalau Valley.

PLACES TO STAY Moana Surfrider, Waikiki Beach - Oahu The first hotel on Waikiki, Moana Surfrider opened its doors in 1901. And for visiting couples it has everything you could ask for. The prime beachfront location in the heart of Waikiki means you’re a short walk from everything.

Escape to Love

Pacific Romance

Imagine embarking on a journey where your footprints are among the few to grace pristine sands. Where the concept of sustainability isn’t a marketing ploy but a centuries-old way of life. Welcome to American Samoa, a place that’s more than just a sibling to its neighbouring Samoa; it’s a paradise with its own unique American flair. It’s a Pacific getaway for couples craving an active adventure mixed with authentic cultural immersion. Although American Samoa is just a seagull’s glide away from Samoa (about 40 minutes’ flight time), the American influence makes it feel quite different. A Deed of Cession signed in 1900 with the United States opened the door to job opportunities and federal aid. And while US dollars help maintain those Instagrammable national parks, they also keep the islands operating at a standard that surprises many visitors. Despite the material differences, American Samoans have fiercely clung to their roots, their culture, and their unhurried way of life. Couples visiting the islands will feel like they’re walking into a living museum devoted to the “Samoan way” or fa’a Samoa, where the environment is revered and cared for as a sacred entity. Sustainability isn’t a buzzword; it’s an ethos they’ve lived by for over three millennia. For those couples who consider a romantic getaway to be something more than just candle-lit dinners, who crave a bit of adrenaline, authenticity, and a whole lot of untouched nature, American Samoa calls. Here, you can explore the land and sea by day and immerse yourselves in local customs by night. It’s the ideal place for the romantically adventurous who find peace in places that time forgot, but whose values could teach the world a thing or two. Cheers to love, adventure, and the everlasting allure of American Samoa!

MORE THAN A ONE-ISLAND WONDER. The more you dig into the geography of American Samoa, the more you realise it’s not just a one-island wonder. No, this romantic retreat offers a menu of islands and atolls, each with its own distinct flavour. The ‘main’ island of Tutuila hosts the capital of Pago Pago. It’s where planes touch down, cruise ships dock, and most of the population calls home. Yet, even here, you can find intimate spots where you and your loved one can feel like the only two souls on Earth. Just a whisper away, a mere 2 km off Tutuila’s southwestern coast, you’ll find Aunu’u Island, a bite-sized paradise that’s a quick boat ride away on a calm day. Picture yourselves taking a lazy, hand-in-hand walk around the island, feeling like you’ve just landed on your private oasis. If you’re craving postcard-perfect seclusion, set your compass eastward toward the Manu’a Islands, Ofu, Olosega, and Tau. This is where American Samoa really flexes its scenic muscles. Imagine bed ‘n breakfast coziness, not crowded resorts, in villages so small they practically invite you to become part of the community. These islands are an unspoiled mix of Mother Nature’s finest work, with each village hosting just a few hundred souls.

The Manu’a Island Group, situated 100 kilometres east of Tutuila, comprises the volcanic islands of Ofu, Olosega, and Ta’u. These islands are noted for their sparse population and rich natural beauty, including American Samoa’s tallest peak, Lata Mountain, and portions of the National Park of American Samoa. While tourism facilities are limited, the islands offer well-maintained hiking trails, stunning beaches, and coral reefs, making them an ideal destination for travellers seeking solitude and an unspoiled environment. Ta’u, the largest of these islands, is particularly significant for its cultural history. Saua, on the eastern coast, is considered the birthplace of all Polynesia and holds sacred significance. Local guides can enhance the visitor experience, providing insights into both natural and cultural landmarks. Though commercial accommodation is lacking on Ta’u, houses and lodges are available for nightly rental, offering a more authentic stay. Ofu and Olosega are accessible by boat and a weekly flight from Pago Pago. These islands are connected by a bridge and offer a mix of natural wonders, from hiking trails to coral lagoons. Rangers stationed at Fatuana Point, are often available to guide groups, adding a layer of local knowledge and cultural depth to the adventure. Accommodation is available in the form of small lodges and village homestays, but visitors are advised to bring essential supplies and snorkelling gear, as local resources can be limited.

NATIONAL TREASURES American Samoa’s National Parks are the crown jewels of the islands. Operated by the U.S. National Parks Service, this sprawling 13,500-acre Eden is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. With land sections on the three major islands and over 4,500 acres of reef. Rugged volcanic peaks give way to deep green rainforests, which roll effortlessly into secluded beaches that are as close to paradise as you’ll get. While facilities are minimal, what you do get in return is the authentic, unfiltered beauty of American Samoa. Nature offers her best selfies here, with views that will steal your breath and perhaps even a peck on the cheek from your loved one. With over 35 species of birds serenading you, and an underwater kingdom boasting more than 950 species of fish and 250 types of coral, the only dilemma is deciding where to feast your eyes. However, a word to the wise, or rather, the adventurous: couples planning to tread off the well-marked paths should consult the experts at the National Parks Office in downtown Pago Pago. Local guides can escort you through the more challenging terrains, adding an extra layer of safety and wisdom to your journey.

TAUESE PF SUNIA OCEAN CENTRE Tauese PF Sunia Ocean Centre provides couples with the opportunity to learn about the natural and cultural resources of American Samoa. This state-of-the-art facility features educational exhibits and interactive learning tools to promote and encourage good marine stewardship.

The Rotunda area features a world-leading “Science on a Sphere” exhibit, a room-sized global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a 2-metre diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. Researchers at NOAA developed the SOS as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth System Science to people of all ages.

DIVE INTO LOVE If you’re looking to take your romance to new depths—literally—then Pago Marine Charters in Pago Pago Harbour have you covered. Here’s the thing: commercial diving is still uncommon, which means the waters are virtually untouched. The most celebrated diving spots are in the pristine Fagalele Marine Sanctuary. Fagatele Bay, a flooded volcanic crater surrounded by lush rainforest that forms part of the National Marine Sanctuary. This sanctuary encompasses important fishing grounds and the waters surrounding one of the world’s smallest atolls. The tropical reef within Fagatele Bay is filled with a wide variety of vivid corals, fish, crustaceans, and shellfish for snorkellers to enjoy. Southern humpback whales calve there from July to November, and dolphins and sea turtles are regularly seen. If you’d like to go further afield, Pago Marine Charters are more than happy to take you to some of the archipelago’s lesser-known but equally stunning locations. They even offer dive-and-fish combo packages. Imagine a morning exploring underwater landscapes, followed by an afternoon of fishing—talk about the ultimate romantic outdoor adventure.

GETTING AROUND If Tutuila, the main island, is your base camp, you’ll want to get yourself a rental car. This allows you to explore all the hidden gems this island proudly tucks away. If you get lost, not to worry; English is widely spoken, making it easy to ask for directions to that secluded beach or panoramic viewpoint. And when you do find that secret spot, you can stay as long as your hearts desire, no strings attached. For those who prefer to lean back and enjoy the guided experience, taxis are available. The drivers here often double up as enthusiastic tour guides, sharing local stories that enrich your journey. And if you and your partner fancy a little dash of local colour, hop on one of the unscheduled local buses. It’s a cultural carousel on wheels, offering you a fun, budget-friendly way to mix and mingle with the locals.
