Family Stories Written in the Pacific.

Every family has stories they love to tell — the time we snorkelled with sharks, the epic jungle hike, or the night everyone danced under the stars. These are the moments that stay with us long after the holiday ends. That’s what makes a family getaway to the Pacific Islands so special. It’s not just a break from routine — it’s a chance to reconnect, explore new places, and write the next chapter in your family story.

Last year, our own family did exactly that — a major birthday milestone was the catalyst for an intergenerational celebration that brought extended family together for a week of fun at Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa. It’s a memory we’ll all treasure, from the littlest cousins to the eldest aunts.

In Pacific Family Time, we showcase island destinations that offer unforgettable experiences just like this. Whether you’re swimming in warm lagoons, discovering local traditions, or simply enjoying sunset dinners together, these family trips are what life is all about.

We hope this issue inspires your next holiday — one your family will be talking about for years to come.

Family Tips

Family holidays can be exciting and challenging at the same time. The thought of moving children through airports and on planes can even make some parents quite anxious! So we’ve put together some handy hints to help you along the way.

Stay sun safe.

A bad dose of sunburn can ruin any holiday. So make sure you’ve got a full kit of sun protection products to ward against the Pacific sun. Sunscreen, aftersun, hats etc. Long-sleeved rash shirts are also great for the kids when they’re in and out of the water all the time.

Water toys.

Purchasing swimming goggles, floaties or inflatable rings from a resort shop can be pricey, so make sure you bring your necessary water toys with you.

Take lots of photos.

Kids meals.

When flying, remind your travel agent to order a kid’s meal. On most airlines they will get an activity pack and a nice little meal perfect for hungry little mouths.

Check the daily itinerary.

Almost every resort will have a schedule of free daily activities that the kids will love. So it’s really just a matter of checking what’s on, making a note of the time and remembering to be in the right place at the right time.

First Aid.

Kids at play have slips, trips and scratches, so pack your usual antiseptic cream, antihistamine cream, Pamol and plasters.

Enough to make you scream?

When your baby cries on a plane, it’s natural to worry about upsetting other passengers. Just remember, many of your fellow passengers have been in the same situation themselves and are feeling your pain. So do what you can and don’t fret!

Device Download.

Download movies and games on devices as Wi-Fi may not be strong enough in the islands.

Water.

We always pack extra water for the

Give kids their own little backpack.

A small backpack with a drink bottle, toy and book will give your kids a sense of independence. And it helps keep them occupied during airport waits or check-ins. Just make sure it’s not too heavy – you’ll probably end up carrying it at some point!

Pack colouring-in and other activities.

With travel comes time spent sitting around. Whether that’s waiting for an airport transfer, waiting to board a plane or even just waiting for a meal to arrive. At these times, even the most patient of kids can start to get restless. So make sure you’re prepared. Pack a few activities to keep them occupied during wait times –

through a crowded airport. So give yourself ample time to check-in, clear customs and get to the gate.

Give them a heads-up!

Take a moment to explain what’s coming next –whether it’s airport security, boarding the plane, or a long car ride. Knowing what’s ahead can help make the journey smoother for everyone.

Book seats at the front.

Spending ages standing in the line at passport control isn’t how you want to start your Pacific family getaway –Especially if the kids are getting restless. So try and book your airline seats as close to the front of the plane as possible. That way you’ll be out first and be near the front of the queue at immigration.

Keeping it real

The Cook Islands are one of the South Pacific’s most popular spots for a family getaway, with Rarotonga and Aitutaki serving up that classic island experience. The natural landscape speaks for itself - lush green peaks, soft white sand, and lagoons that sparkle in every shade of blue. But there’s more to this tropical paradise than just good looks. The real magic of the Cook Islands is how easy it is to go beyond the usual resort stay and dive into authentic island life.

In terms of getting your bearings, navigating Rarotonga couldn’t be much easier. A single road circles the island’s coastline - just 32km long - so a full circuit takes around an hour. Having said that, you can easily spend a whole day exploring places along the way. With that in mind, renting a car is something every family should do. The island has plenty of car rental options available, with pickup available right outside the airport.

The main town of Avarua is a good place to start your family exploration. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants to feed the troops. CITC Supermarket – the largest on the island – the perfect place to stock up on food supplies and other essentials, especially if you’re staying in self-contained accommodation.

History buffs (big and small) will love exploring the Para O Tane Palace and the National Museum, where you can dive into the fascinating heritage of the Cook Islands.

For a taste of local life, pop into the bustling Punanga Nui Market. Grab some fresh tropical fruit, browse beautifully crafted handmade goods, or just soak up the vibrant atmosphere. The market is open Monday to Friday on a smaller scale, but Saturday is the main market day when it really comes alive. On Saturdays, the market operates from 7:00am to 12:00pm, with well over 100 stalls. Tip: it’s best to arrive early, as the market starts to wind down around 11:00am.

As you might expect, there are plenty of beaches to stop off for a swim. And Titikaveka Beach on Rarotonga’s southern coast is

a standout. Here, powdery white sand meets serene turquoise waters, creating the perfect backdrop for both peaceful relaxation and gentle adventure. Wade into the crystal-clear lagoon and you’ll find yourself swimming among vibrant coral reefs teeming with colourful fish. The calm, shallow waters make it ideal for snorkellers of all levels – from complete beginners to experienced explorers.

Another place to beat the heat is Papua Waterfall, also known as Wigmore’s Waterfall. Located on Rarotonga’s lush south sidejust a short drive down Papua Road - this oasis features a gentle cascade tumbling into a crystal-clear natural pool. Surrounded by tropical greenery, it’s a stunning spot to unwind, listen to nature’s soundtrack, and take a break from the island’s sun-drenched beaches. Pack a picnic to make the most of your visit - there are picnic tables available.

Feel like stretching the legs? The Hospital Hill Track is a top pick for families. This gentle 2km return walk kicks off from the Rarotonga Hospital car park in Nikao and offers a great introduction to the island’s lush, tropical interior (without being too taxing). The well-worn dirt track winds through lush greenery, gradually leading to a spectacular viewpoint - and don’t worry, even the littlies can handle the incline. In just 30 to 40 minutes, you’ll reach the top, where epic views stretch across Nikao Beach, the sparkling lagoon, the airport, the rugged west coast, and Raro’s inland peaks.

MURI VILLAGE: EVERYTHING WITHIN AN EASY WALK

Muri Village has everything a family could want, all within easy walking distance. The well-stocked mini-supermarket provides all your essential supplies, while a variety of eateries cater to every taste. Start your day with fresh pastries and excellent coffee at LBV Bakery & Café, or enjoy beachfront dining at Rarotonga Sailing Club. For international flavours, The Rickshaw offers delicious Vietnamese cuisine, while La Casita serves up Mexican favourites like fish tacos and quesadillas.

The vibrant Muri Night Markets (running Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 5:00 pm) are just steps away, offering an array of food stalls with island-style BBQ, fresh seafood, tasty curries, wood-fired pizza, and sweet treats. With prices ranging from $4 to $20 NZD, it’s a budgetfriendly evening out for the whole family. Remember it’s cashonly, with a convenient ATM located near the entrance.

Home to a vibrant village, arguably Rarotonga’s best beach and some of the best accommodation options on the island, Muri Beach or ‘Muri’ is a wonderful spot to base yourselves – or spend the day. With its soft white sands and calm waters, it’s an easy win for families looking for both adventure and relaxation. Little ones can safely splash about, while older kids (and parents) can snorkel among colourful fish, kayak, paddleboard, or even give kitesurfing a go.

For a more organised adventure, jump on a lagoon cruise. They’ll take you to the best snorkelling and swimming spots in the lagoon, along with a stop at a motu for a beachside barbecue, giving kids the chance to run wild, hunt for hermit crabs, and soak up the island vibe.

When it’s time to refuel, Muri Village has plenty of family-friendly eats. Start the day with fresh pastries and great coffee at LBV Bakery & Café, or grab a bite at Rarotonga Sailing Club right on the beach. For something different, The Rickshaw serves up tasty Vietnamese dishes, while La Casita is the go-to for Mexican favourites like fish tacos and quesadillas. There’s also a wellstocked mini-supermarket for any supplies you need, and they serve a mean cone ice cream!

WHERE LEGENDS COME TO LIFE!

If you’re after a fun family outing, you can’t go past Te Vara Nui Village. It’s where culture, storytelling and live entertainment come together in the most magical way. The highlight is the Over Water Night Show & Buffet Dinner, where you’ll be swept into the Legend of Tongaiti. Picture a stunning lagoon setting with a dramatic rock waterfall backdrop. Watch on as warriors, dancers and musicians bring to life the story of Tongaiti, a brave voyager seeking refuge in Rarotonga. Met with flying spears and defiant chants, his tribe is turned away, until his daughter’s enchanting dance melts the island Chief’s heart, granting them safe passage! Between the captivating performances, delicious food, and enchanting atmosphere, Te Vara Nui Village delivers the kind of cultural experience your family won’t forget in a hurry.

PACIFIC RESORT

TURTLE TIME

One of the most popular family activities (and yet another Raro highlight) is swimming with turtles. There are a number of different tour operators, including Charlotte Piho Tours. A Cook Islands local, Charlotte is a worldclass underwater photographer with a passion for marine conservation. Her tour is based at Avaavaroa Passage on Rarotonga’s south coast — a gap in the reef where early Polynesian navigators would safely make landfall. These days, the tidal currents flowing through create a natural feeding ground for turtles, fish, and eagle rays. Once you’re in the water, it’s spectacular. The turtles swim right past you like they’re saying hello, and if you look down to the bottom (about 10-15 metres down), you’ll spot eagle rays turning in graceful circles.

CAPTAIN TAMA’S LAGOON CRUIZES

For a day of laughs, adventure, and island vibes, Captain Tama’s Lagoon Cruize is a must. From the moment you arrive, lively singing and drumming set the scene for a fun-filled trip across Muri Lagoon’s turquoise waters. Hop aboard the glass-bottom boat, snorkel among colourful fish, and enjoy a beachside barbecue on a motu (islet). The crew keep the energy high with coconut tree climbing, coconut husking, and sarong-tying tricks - guaranteed to entertain the whole family! If you’re up for some classic island fun, Captain Tama’s delivers an unforgettable family adventure.

AITUTAKI

Just 45 minutes north of Rarotonga by plane, Aitutaki rises from the Pacific like something from a dream. Imagine a dazzling turquoise lagoon scattered with tiny emerald islands, all tucked safely behind a coral reef. Sure, Aitutaki has a reputation as a romantic getaway (and it definitely is), but don’t let that fool you — this slice of paradise is magic for families too, especially if you’ve got older kids or teens who love nature, adventure, and falling into the easy rhythm of island life.

With one main island and 15 smaller motu, Aitutaki is a natural playground of secluded beaches and crystal-clear waters. Hop on a water taxi to your own private motu, where the kids can splash around with tropical fish, you can stretch out in the sun, and everyone can experience that pinch-yourself moment of having a tropical island almost to themselves.

The real star of the show here is the lagoon. Local operators run fantastic half-day and full-day cruises, stopping at iconic spots like One Foot Island, Honeymoon Island and Maina. They’ll set you up with snorkelling gear, get the kids excited with activities like tubing and wakeboarding, and treat you to a proper beachside fish barbecue.

Back on dry land, the Orongo Centre comes alive on Saturday nights. The marketplace buzzes with energy, and the cultural performances are something else — think fire dancers, Cook Islands drummers and local musicians bringing their traditions to life.

When it comes to places to stay, Tamanu Beach Resort is a standout for families wanting accommodation with that extra bit of comfort. The property offers Aitutaki’s only dedicated family-friendly accommodation in its Manea Wing, which has been welcoming families since 2022. It features spacious One-Bedroom Beachfront Bungalows just a few barefoot steps from the sand, along with seven additional One-Bedroom Bungalows nestled in the gardens behind. With complimentary kayaks, paddleboards and bicycles available at your leisure, there’s plenty of fun to be had by all.

Of course, you’ve got your pick of other options too — from cosy beachfront bungalows to luxury resorts, all with that wonderfully warm Cook Islands welcome that makes you feel like family.

Getting here’s easy on Air Rarotonga, with several flights heading over each day from Raro. And that extra hop from Rarotonga? Worth every minute. If you’re after a family adventure that mixes culture, fun and pure island magic, Aitutaki is one of those rare places where you can truly unplug, sink into island time, and build the kind of memories that stick with you forever.

FAMILY FAVOURITES

Stepping away from the Family Schedule

Like most city parents, Simon and Tish Watkins lead a busy life. So when it came to taking a break from their numerous work and family commitments, they chose a destination that offered the chance to truly unwind.

What made you choose the Pacific Islands for your family holiday?

We chose the Pacific Islands for their stunning beaches, familyfriendly atmosphere, and the chance to escape the everyday grind. It felt like paradise was calling our name!

How did you decide on the specific island and resort? Rarotonga kept popping up with its stunning scenery and familyfriendly vibes. After some research, we found The Edgewater Resort and Spa had everything we wanted: pools, activities, and an awesome beach right out front!

Did the local culture play a part in your holiday experience? Absolutely! We soaked in the local culture whenever we could. We watched a traditional dance show, spent time at local markets, and sampled quite a few local eateries too.

Were there any unique experiences that your family especially enjoyed?

We loved snorkelling and kayaking in crystal-clear waters. An absolute highlight was getting up close and swimming with the turtles. The Raro Buggy Tour is a must – mud and all!

What part of the trip made it special for your children?

The chance to explore the beautiful island, watch the sunset on the beach every day, meet friendly locals, and experience fun activities you can’t find in the city.

How did you balance relaxation for the adults with fun for the kids?

Our kids are 11 and 13, so they’re not babies anymore. At the resort, they could safely go off and enjoy their activities while we clocked up some well-deserved relaxation by the pool with a few delicious cocktails.

The Watkins Family

What local attractions would you recommend?

Apart from the Turtle Tour and Buggy Tour, spend a day at Muri and kayak to some of the smaller islands – the views are epic.

Would you do anything differently next time to make the trip even more enjoyable?

I’d plan a few more organised activities, like a progressive dinner tour. Plus, I’d pencil in a day or two with no schedule whatsoever— just lounging on the beach and letting the day unfold naturally!

What advice would you give to other families?

Embrace the pace of island life. Pack light, stay flexible, and don’t be afraid to try new things. You’ll find that the best memories often come from the unexpected.

What are your top tips for a family holiday in the Pacific?

Engage with the locals, try new foods, and take time to relax together on the beach. Always have a camera ready to capture those spontaneous moments! And don’t forget the sunscreen— trust me on that one!

Wild Beauty

A family holiday in Samoa feels less like being a tourist and more like becoming part of the local fabric. Unlike other Pacific islands where visitors might feel like mere spectators, Samoa welcomes families with open arms, offering an authentic, back-to-basics experience. It’s comfortable without being extravagant, where the spirit of Polynesia is alive and thriving.

In Samoa, family fun isn’t a scheduled itinerary - it’s something you create together. And that’s part of the charm. The islands offer a natural playground, where sun-soaked beaches, pristine landscapes, and endless outdoor adventures invite you to explore at your own pace. Whether it’s splashing in crystal-clear lagoons, discovering hidden waterfalls, or simply soaking in the island’s laid-back rhythm, the magic of Samoa is found in the experiences you make, not the ones planned for you.

From a practical point of view, Samoa is made up of two main islands, each offering a unique but equally incredible experience. Choosing between them comes down to preference. Upolu is the livelier of the two, attracting most travellers with its top-tier resorts, dramatic southern coastline, and the vibrant capital of Apia. It’s got everything you need for a fun-filled family getaway, blending adventure with comfort.

Savai’i, on the other hand, is all about raw, unspoiled beauty - the Real Samoa, as the locals proudly call it. Traditions run deep here, and the island’s untouched landscapes invite families to carve out their own adventures, whether it’s exploring lush rainforests, swimming in secluded waterfalls, or simply embracing the slower pace of island life.

No matter where you go in Samoa, one thing remains the same - there’s always time to slow down, soak up the beauty, and experience the islands the way they’re meant to be enjoyed.

UPOLU

Apia is a great place to kick off a family holiday. Samoa’s capital is bursting with personality, and nowhere is this more evident than in its vibrant markets. The Fugalei Market, right in the heart of town next to the bus station, is a treasure trove of souvenirs - wood carvings, jewellery, lava-lavas, hats, and even fragrant massage oils. It’s also a feast for the senses, with delicious cooked food and an eye-popping array of tropical fruits and vegetables. If there’s ever a place to get the kids excited about fresh produce, this is it!

To dive deeper into Fa’a Samoa, stop by the Samoa Cultural Village in the heart of Apia. Here, visitors are warmly welcomed to learn about Samoan traditions through interactive demonstrations - watch artisans craft traditional items, taste freshly prepared Samoan dishes, and soak up the rich Polynesian culture.

For families with adventurous spirits, the hike to Lake Lanoto’o is a must. Set deep within Samoa’s lush, volcanic landscape, this trek isn’t for the little ones - it’s a two-hour round trip - but the reward is well worth the effort. At the ancient crater lake, you can swim in the cool waters, spot wild goldfish, and take in the untouched beauty of this hidden gem. To make the journey smoother (and avoid taking any unexpected detours), consider hiring a guide.

For a picture-perfect beach day, Lalomanu Beach is the place to be. Often ranked among the best in the South Pacific, this stretch of dazzling white sand and crystal-clear lagoon is part of a protected marine reserve, so packing a snorkel set is a must. The kids will love swimming among vibrant tropical fish, and you’ll want to bring a waterproof camera to capture the magic. If one day isn’t enough - and it probably won’t be—you can extend the adventure with a stay in a traditional beach fale. And for another unique marine experience, take a short trip to Namua Island, where you can swim with endangered green turtles in their natural habitat.

Another jaw-dropping natural wonder is the To Sua Ocean Trench on Upolu’s South Coast. Tucked within beautifully landscaped gardens, this 30-metre-deep swimming hole is reached via a wooden ladder, leading to a surreal pool where fresh and saltwater meet through an ancient lava-formed tunnel. As far as swimming spots go – this is one of the South Pacific’s best.

For a refreshing swim with a side of history, head to Togitogiga Waterfall in Saleilua Village. Once a bathing spot for great Samoan warriors, this cascading waterfall is now an idyllic place to cool off, surrounded by lush tropical gardens. It’s the perfect picnic stop in the heart of Upolu’s South Coast.

And if your family loves a little adrenaline, Papaseea Sliding Rocks is just a short drive from Apia and promises hours of fun. These naturally carved rock slides have been smoothed over thousands of years by rushing water. There’s one five-metre slide and three smaller ones - perfect for thrill-seekers of all ages.

PLACES TO STAY

Saletoga Sands Resort & Spa

Tucked away on its own private beach, Saletoga Sands is pure South Pacific paradise—think swaying palms, white sand, and crystal-clear water. If your family loves the water, they’ll be in their element here. The resort has not one, but two swimming pools. The smaller pool, next to the Lagoon View Villas, comes with a children’s playground (parents can put their feet up while the kids have a blast). And there are waterslides straight into the lagoon! Add a paddleboard, kayak, or snorkelling gear, and you’re all set to explore the lagoon and reef at your own pace. Spacious rooms with stunning lagoon views mean you’re waking up in paradise every day. Plus, a fantastic kids’ activity programme keeps the little ones busy, giving parents the perfect excuse to sneak off to the spa or bar for some well-earned R&R.

TAUMEASINA ISLAND RESORT

SAVAII

Keen to experience the ‘Real Samoa’? Then hop on the 90-minute ferry from Upolu’s Mulifanua Wharf to Savai’i, where life moves at a slower pace and traditions run deep. As the third-largest Polynesian island, Savai’i is all about reconnecting with the simple things—stunning landscapes, warm hospitality, and an easygoing way of life. A well-maintained road loops around the island, making it a breeze to explore.

The adventure begins as soon as you step off the ferry in Salelologa, Savai’i’s main town. It’s small but lively, with a bustling market that’s perfect for stocking up on local produce before hitting the road. Whether you hire a car, grab a bicycle, or jump on a bus (no stops—just wave one down when you see it), getting around is all part of the fun.

A must-visit is Afu Aau Waterfall, a spectacular spot tucked away in the southeast. Freshwater cascades from the rainforest into a natural swimming pool that ranges from shallow to deep—ideal for a refreshing dip, no matter your swimming level.

Another brilliant place for a swim is Mataolealelo Pool, a crystalclear natural spring steeped in Samoan legend. This is the fabled site of Sina and the Eel, the story behind the origins of the coconut tree. There are two pools—one shallow and perfect for the kids, and a deeper one for the grown-ups.

THE SAMOAN WAY

Samoa’s rich culture and traditions are deeply rooted in Fa’a Samoa, or the Samoan Way, a way of life that has shaped the islands for over 3,000 years. At its heart is the importance of family, with a strong emphasis on duty, service, and deep respect for elders.

While this may sound formal from the outside, visitors will quickly experience the legendary warmth of Samoan hospitality. The key is to approach local customs with an open mind and a respectful attitude - you’ll be welcomed in like family in no time.

When exploring villages, beaches, and swimming spots, it’s important to observe local etiquette. Many areas have specific protocols to honour traditions and maintain respect for the land and its people. For detailed guidance, families should check Samoa’s official travel site - a quick read that ensures you navigate this rich culture with understanding and appreciation.

If a walk in the wild is more your thing, the Tafua Peninsula Rainforest Reserve won’t disappoint. This untouched rainforest is full of great trails, including one that leads to the volcanic crater towering over Tafua village.

For something truly explosive, head to the Alofaaga Blowholes in Taga on the southwest coast. At high tide, the ocean surges into these natural rock formations, shooting water up to 30 metres into the air. If you’re lucky, you might see the locals having a bit of fun— tossing in coconuts and watching them rocket skyward like natural cannons. Fire in the hole!

Savai’i is all about slowing down and soaking up the best of island life—untouched beauty, fascinating history, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel right at home. Pack your togs, grab a fresh coconut, and get ready to explore Samoa’s best-kept secret.

FAMILY FAVOURITES

An Easy Family Escape

With a career in the travel industry, including Fiji Airways and Scenic Hotels, Michelle Geale knows a thing or two about planning the perfect getaway. Wanting to escape the winter chill and enjoy some well-earned downtime, she and her family chose Samoa for a mid-year holiday.

What made you choose the Pacific Islands for your family holiday?

We wanted to take a mid-year holiday to escape winter, soak up some sunshine, and completely disconnect from work. Samoa was a great option—affordable flights and accommodation, plus just a short flight away (which is essential when travelling with kids—in our case, our four-year-old daughter, and our friends’ two-year-old son).

How did you decide on the specific resort?

I had spoken to a few people in our incredible industry who either know Samoa well or had recently visited on a famil. We wanted a beachfront location with a good pool (including a swim-up bar) and an on-site spa.

Saletoga Sands Resort and Spa ticked all those boxes. We opted for a Deluxe Family Villa. Since we were travelling with friends, we wanted to be close by, and thankfully, our villas were right next door to each other! The rooms were fantastic—lots of space, a separate room for our daughter, an outdoor shower, and great airconditioning. The decks at the front were the best—once the kids were in bed each night, we gathered on our deck for nibbles and a few beverages.

Did the local culture play a part in your holiday experience?

We wanted to show the kids that life isn’t all about being busy, playgrounds, and watching TV. While playgrounds are a frequent part of our routine at home, they weren’t available in Samoa—so instead, the kids played outside with balls, on the sand, and explored new places. They loved waving to people as we drove through the villages, and my daughter enthusiastically shouted “Talofa Lava” to everyone she saw.

What part of the trip made it special for your children? Eliza (our daughter) learned how to snorkel in Samoa. We hired a van from the resort on two of the days, and on one of those days, we drove to the Giant Clam Sanctuary to snorkel and look for turtles. Seeing her face light up when she realised (a) she could do it, and (b) the incredible underwater world she could now explore was priceless.

The Geale Family

How did you balance relaxation for the adults with fun for the kids?

For a start, being completely unplugged from work was amazing! The fact that the resort had a spa on-site was another bonus. Our package included two 30-minute massages. My husband isn’t a fan of massages (weird, I know!), so I happily used both of our vouchers.

Another thing that made relaxation easier was that, aside from the two days we hired a van, we had no real schedule except for our children’s stomachs. Walking along the beach, swimming, reading—it was so good for all of us. The kids also slept well, thanks to all the swimming, fresh air, and vitamin D.

What local attractions would you recommend?

• To Sua Trench – The husbands enjoyed it, but our kids were just a bit too young. The ladder is steep, so it’s great for steadyfooted kids or adults.

• Lalomanu Beach – A great spot for lunch and turtle spotting.

• Giant Clam Sanctuary – Well worth visiting!

• Apia – A nice place for lunch and a bit of exploring.

Were there any challenges in travelling with children?

I’m glad we took snacks for the kids — whether we were driving around the island or relaxing at the resort, having familiar snacks (crackers, raisins, muesli bars, etc.) was a lifesaver. We also had a chiller bag for yoghurts, juices, and water.

What advice would you give to other families?

Take lots of snacks — not just for the kids! We packed cheese and crackers for post-dinner nibbles around 8pm after early dinners with the kids. And let the kids try different foods—mealtimes are a great opportunity for them to experience something new.

What are your top tips for a family holiday in the Pacific?

1. Go with the flow. Have a rough idea of what you want to do, but if an opportunity pops up, take it!

2. Try to switch off from work. As they say, kids grow up fast—this trip reminded us how special it is to slow down and enjoy quality time as a family.

3. Be prepared for all types of weather. Having activities like colouring books, pencils, small toys, and books makes a huge difference.

Family Fun Made for

From epic kids’ clubs to action-packed activities, top-notch children’s facilities, and spacious family-friendly accommodation, Fiji has perfected the art of family travel.

Whatever your budget or travel style, there’s a spot that fits. If you’re after an affordable getaway, budget-friendly stays with self-contained facilities make it easy to keep costs down. Prefer a luxury escape? Fiji’s five-star resorts take family-friendly indulgence to the next level.

And the options don’t stop there. Whether you love the convenience of the mainland, the charm of an island retreat, or a secluded tropical hideaway, Fiji’s diverse regions offer something special for every family. Adventure-packed, laid-back, off-the-grid, or a mix of it all - you can shape your trip to match your family’s vibe.

What truly sets Fiji apart for those travelling with kids? The people. Fijians have deep-rooted family traditions, and it shines through in the way they welcome visitors with warmth and genuine care.

In a nutshell, Fijians love kids! That means parents of babies and toddlers can enjoy some well-earned relaxation while experienced nannies dote on their little treasures. Meanwhile, older kids will be swept up in non-stop fun, thanks to activities staff who have a knack for turning every moment into an adventure.

And with so many families holidaying in Fiji, kids quickly make new mates from New Zealand, Australia, and beyond. These friendships might only last a few days, but the memories? They’ll last a lifetime. And when the kids are having an absolute blast, parents finally get to switch off too. That’s what a brilliant family holiday is all about.

DENARAU ISLAND

Denarau Island is where family holidays go big! It’s vibrant, full of life, and packed with more five-star resorts in one spot than anywhere else in the South Pacific. Each property brings its own flavour of fun, but you can always count on warm Fijian hospitality, family-friendly accommodation, and dining that caters to every craving. And for the kids? The kids clubs here don’t just keep them entertained - they turn every day into an adventure.

One of the best things about Denarau? How easy it all is. After a quick transfer from the airport, families can be poolside, cocktail (or mocktail) in hand, 30 minutes after clearing customs. When it comes to Pacific island family getaways, it doesn’t get much more seamless than that.

And with resorts lined up side by side, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to food. Fancy a change of scene? Just wander to the resort next door. From fresh seafood to Italian, Japanese, Thai, Lebanese, and quick bites, Denarau serves up something for every taste. Families staying in self-contained accommodation, can also pick up snacks and other essentials from various convenience stores dotted around the island.

It’s easy to settle into resort life in Denarau, but venture beyond the gates and you’ll find even more to explore. Just a short ride

BIG BULA WATERPARK © TOURISM FIJI

on the open-air Bula Bus or a quick taxi trip away, Port Denarau is a vibrant waterfront hub, packed with dining, shopping, and adventure opportunities.

The port offers a great mix of cafés, casual bites, and restaurants serving up everything from fresh seafood to international flavours. If a bit of retail therapy is in order, you’ll find boutique stores, a pharmacy, and even a couple of spas for that well-earned dose of relaxation.

Port Denarau is also your family gateway to the spectacular Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. From here, you can hop on a ferry, set off on an island-hopping cruise, or even rev things up with a jet-ski safari across the crystal-clear waters. Whether you’re after a laid-back day on a secluded beach or an action-packed marine adventure, it all begins right here!

PLACES TO STAY

Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa

At the northern end of Denarau, the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa has long been a favourite for families - and for good reason. Spacious two- and three-bedroom accommodations mean there’s plenty of room to spread out, and if you’ve got little ones in tow, the ground-floor rooms are a winner. Just slide open the doors, and they’ll be straight outside, running barefoot on the grass in seconds. The Kids’ Club keeps young adventurers entertained with beachside touch rugby, egg-catching contests, and even ice cream-eating competitions. Just listen for the tribal beat of the drums by the pool - that’s the signal that the fun is about to begin. Meanwhile, parents seeking some downtime can slip away to the Koro adults-only area, where the vibe is blissfully laid-back.

Radisson Blu Resort Fiji

If you’re after non-stop action, Radisson Blu delivers in spades! The resort’s Banana Boys crew is legendary, keeping waves of Kiwi and Aussie kids entertained from sunrise to sunset.

From treasure hunts and touch footy to pool volleyball and beach games, the energy here is contagious. The best part? The Bananas love it just as much as the kids do! It’s the kind of place where young travellers become instant best mates - one moment they’re strangers, the next they’re off on an adventure together, no screens in sight. And for families who return year after year (and plenty do), it feels like coming home. Many of the staff have been here for years, so for regular guests, it’s less like checking into a resort and more like catching up with old friends.

Sheraton Denarau Villas

For families who like a little extra space - and the flexibility of selfcatering - Sheraton Denarau Villas is hard to top. These one, two, and three-bedroom apartment-style villas are packed with parentfriendly features, including that all-important washing machine and dryer (let’s be honest, laundry never goes on holiday). Each villa also comes with a full kitchen, complete with a full-sized fridge, microwave, and cooktop - perfect for whipping up a quick brekkie or a late night bite. And with a convenience store and mini food market right outside, stocking up on snacks and essentials is a breeze. Not only does it add flexibility, but it’s also a great way to save a few dollars by dining in when it suits. Families also get full access to the neighbouring Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort’s facilities, giving families even more options to swim, dine, and explore.

Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa

When Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa launched Niu Beach Club for Kids, it set the bar for family fun in Denarau. Designed for ages 3-12, the beachfront club is more than just a place to play - it’s an adventurepacked paradise with seven interactive zones, including splashworthy water fun, trampolines, creative art sessions, and cosy chill-out spaces. And the excitement isn’t slowing down! The Splash Park at Niu Beach Club is getting a refresh, with three brand-new water features under construction from late March to mid-April 2025. On top of that, two brand-new waterslides are on the way, with work scheduled from late April to late May. While these areas will be temporarily closed during upgrades, the end result promises even bigger thrills for families in the future.

VOU Hub Fiji – Culture meets family fun

For families looking to add a splash of culture to their Fijian adventure, VOU Hub Fiji is a must-visit. Just a short drive from Denarau Island, this lively entertainment hub brings Fijian legends and traditions to life in a fun and interactive way. The highlight for young explorers? “Island Adventurers”, a kids’ show that takes little ones on a musical journey across rivers, through forests, and into mysterious caves. Along the way, they’ll meet colourful characters like Moko the Lizard and Lulu the Owl, who guide them through songs, dances, and stories that celebrate Fiji’s rich culture. It’s high-energy, full of laughs, and perfect for kids who love to get involved.

SABRE FIJI

Daytripping with South Sea Cruises

If you’re keen to soak up a slice of Fijian paradise without committing to an island stay, South Sea Cruises has you covered with fantastic family-friendly day trips from Port Denarau. Just 30 minutes from the mainland, South Sea Island is a tiny tropical gem packed with fun. Kids can make a splash in the swimming pool or join the kids club, while parents kick back on sun-drenched beaches. Snorkelling, kayaking, and cruising the reef in a semi-submersible coral viewer let the whole family experience the magic of the ocean together. With a BBQ buffet lunch and a lively Fijian Meke performance, it’s a full day of tropical island bliss.

For an action-packed adventure on the water, the Ride and Slide Experience is another option. Hop aboard a high-speed catamaran and zip across the Mamanuca Islands to a tropical reef.

Once there, you can snorkel straight from the boat, stepping down from the front or - if you’re feeling adventurous - zooming into the ocean from a giant inflatable slide mounted on the roof! With snorkelling gear provided, it’s a great way to explore Fiji’s vibrant underwater world. The experience also includes a gourmet morning tea, plus complimentary soft drinks, bottled water, local beer, and house wine.

VOMO ISLAND FIJI

Real Village Life

A village excursion is one of the best ways for families to experience the legendary warmth of the Fijian people while discovering Fiji’s rich culture. Most resorts offer guided tours to Mamanuca Island villages, where you can visit local schools, browse colourful craft markets, and watch your children make new friends with local kids. No screens, no language barriers—just the universal joy of shared laughter and games of tag. It’s a wonderful opportunity to venture beyond the resort and experience authentic Fiji, gaining insight into island life while supporting the local community.

With a dedicated children’s pool, buzzing kids’ club, and entertainment lounge, Malolo Island Resort is another resort where the fun never stops. At the heart of it all is Tia’s Treehouse Kids’ Club. Sitting beneath a giant mango tree, this fully fenced playground is more than just a place to play - it’s an immersive dive into Fijian life. Designed for ages 4-12, the kids’ programme is split into two age groups (4-8 years and 9-12 years) and features daily themes like Fijian culture, marine life, and traditional arts and crafts.

For older kids (9-17 years), Khail’s Club offers a cool, airconditioned retreat filled with games, books, arts and crafts, and even a dance floor. With its five-star location and family-friendly price tag, Plantation Island Resort is hands down one of Fiji’s best spots for kids—and a stress-free escape for parents. But the biggest hit?

The inflatable water park, a floating playground with a spring-free aqua trampoline and climbing towers that guarantee hours of highenergy fun. Plus there’s a Jungle Water Park where kids can jump, flip, or dive into the lagoon from two bouncy trampolines, a slide, and Tarzan swing.

For families who love to explore, Bula Bikes are a fantastic way to cruise around the island at your own pace, soaking up the tropical vibes as you go.

CORAL COAST

Just an hour’s drive south of Nadi, Fiji’s Coral Coast is where resort luxury meets real adventure. It’s a top pick for families who love the comforts of a beachfront resort but also want to get out and explore. While some holiday spots are all about staying put, the Coral Coast practically dares you to venture beyond the hotel grounds. Along this stretch of coast, beaches give way to rolling sand dunes, lush rainforest, and winding rivers just waiting to be explored. Thrill-seekers can take on the Sigatoka River Safari, an exhilarating jet boat ride into Fiji’s interior, while history buffs can step back in time at Tavuni Hill Fort, a fascinating remnant of Fiji’s tribal past. Over at Kula Wild Adventure Park, rescued sea turtles, tropical birds, and Fiji’s rare crested iguanas give visitors a chance to get up close with Fiji’s incredible wildlife.

If you stop anywhere, make it Sigatoka Town. This lively riverside hub hums with energy - locals and travellers mingling over market stalls piled high with tropical fruit, the scent of fresh roti in the air, and bright storefronts bursting with character. It’s a place where a quick visit easily turns into the kind of stories a family will remember.

PLACES TO STAY

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa

At InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, family magic happens daily on stunning Natadola Beach. This five-star haven offers spacious rooms (starting at 63 square metres) with private outdoor spaces featuring daybeds and Cleopatra baths. Clever connecting rooms create private family wings, while four dining venues satisfy all appetites - from Sanasana’s breakfast to poolside lunch at Toba Bar & Grill, evening entertainment at Kama Lounge, and even fine dining at Navo where under-12s are welcome early evenings. Boredom doesn’t exist here. Fiji’s largest children’s pool (just 80cm deep) provides safe water play. Families can join coral planting, snorkel safaris, or try the beginner-friendly surf break. The “BeeHappy Experience” turns kids into conservationists, while Planet Trekkers kids’ club runs three daily sessions across age groups.

Kula WILD Adventure Park

Tucked away in the lush coastal forests a few minutes from Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, Kula WILD Adventure Park is where fun, learning, and conservation all come together. Spread across 28 acres, this sanctuary is home to some of Fiji’s most fascinating wildlife, from elusive Pacific Boas to the country’s iconic, bright-green iguanas. But it’s not just about wildlife encounters. Thrill-seekers can zip through the treetops on the Rollercoaster Zip Rail, splash down the Jungle Water Slide, or let the little ones cool off in the kiddies’ pool.

Young explorers (ages 6-12) can even get stuck into the ‘Ranger for a Day’ programme, working alongside real park rangers for a hands-on conservation experience. And make sure you catch the daily sea turtle feedings too. Best of all, every visit helps support vital conservation efforts, so while you’re having a blast, you’re also giving back to Fiji’s incredible natural world.

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort

Another Coral Coast favourite, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is packed with family-friendly fun, offering plenty to keep the kids entertained. The Little Riggers programme (for ages 3–7) and Beach Riggers (for 8–12-year-olds) are tailor-made for young adventurers, with activities to keep them buzzing all day. One of the resort’s biggest drawcards? The Splash Zone—home to a colourful, spiralling waterslide that twists and turns before sending riders splashing into the huge pool below. For older kids (and thrillseeking grown-ups), the Outrigger Adventure Park delivers with paintball, archery, and a 230-metre driving range. And if that’s not enough action, the Kula Wild Adventure Park is just down the road, offering even more wildlife encounters and outdoor fun.

Where Family Dreams Meet Fiji’s Finest

Ever watched your little one’s eyes light up at the sight of hermit crabs scuttling across pristine sand? Or seen your teenager finally look up from their phone, amazed by a spectacular fire show? At InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa these are just some of the magical moments that are an everyday occurrence for visiting families.

Sitting on one of Fiji’s finest stretches of sand, Natadola Beach, this five-star haven isn’t just your typical family-friendly resort. Here, 35 acres of tropical gardens meet powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters, creating a playground where family memories are made.

Speaking of space (because let’s face it, family holidays need plenty of it), the rooms here are among Fiji’s most generous, starting at a 63 square metres, right up to the expansive Club InterContinental Two Bedroom Suite which measures 218 square metres.

Regardless of choice, all rooms come with their own outdoor oasis – think daybeds for afternoon naps and signature Cleopatra baths that turn bedtime routines into something fun. There’s no need to tiptoe around sleeping kids either. Here, parents can enjoy warm tropical evenings on their private terrace while the little ones rest peacefully inside.

The resort also has a clever connecting room solution for Garden, Pool, Lagoon View and Beachfront rooms – where adjoining rooms connect across a corridor with their own exclusive entry point. Think of it as your family’s private wing, where everyone gets their space but stays connected.

When it comes to activities, boredom simply isn’t an option! Free daily entertainment ranges from pool aerobics (yes, even for the little ones) to hermit crab races that bring out the competitive spirit in everyone. The resort’s unique “Bee-Happy Experience” turns curious minds into junior conservationists, combining a fascinating beehive tour with a yummy afternoon tea. It’s education disguised as adventure - the best kind of learning there is.

Water babies will be in their element with complimentary daily access to snorkelling gear and non-motorised water sports. For thrill-seekers, jet ski safaris and parasailing adventures await.

Nature enthusiasts can join coral planting initiatives or guided snorkel safaris, becoming temporary guardians of Natadola Bay’s vibrant marine world. The resort even has its surf break with small rollers that are perfect for first-time riders.

When hunger strikes (as it often does with active families), four distinct dining venues await. Start your day at Sanasana Restaurant, where breakfast is served with a beautiful view. Lunch by the pool at Toba Bar & Grill keeps everyone happy with everything from wood-fired pizzas to fresh poké bowls.

As the sun sets, Kama Lounge & Bar offers front-row seats to traditional Fijian entertainment on selected days, and iconic daily torch-lighting ceremonies. Even fine dining at Navo Signature Dining welcomes under-12s from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, introducing young palates to local delicacies like Yasawa Island rock lobster and fresh catches from the Koro Sea. And for those ‘I’m still hungry’ moments, room service is the answer with 24-hour dining bringing the best of Fijian and international cuisine right to your door.

Multiple swimming pools mean there’s always a perfect spot for water play, whether your tribe prefers lively splash sessions or peaceful paddling. The children’s pool is one of the biggest in Fiji. And because it’s only 80 centimetres at its deepest spot, it’s basically one safe, super-sized watery playground!

While adventure is found around every corner, sometimes parents need their own slice of paradise. Enter Planet Trekkers, the resort’s kids’ club that knows one size doesn’t fit all. Split into two age groups – four to seven years and eight to twelve years – the kids club makes sure activities are perfectly pitched for your little explorers. With three daily sessions running morning, afternoon, and evening (complete with snacks to fuel their adventures), Planet Trekkers gives parents the flexibility to enjoy a spa treatment, peaceful beach walk, or romantic dinner, knowing their children are having the time of their lives. Even the youngest guests under four can join the fun when accompanied by a resort nanny.

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa’s winning family formula hasn’t gone unnoticed – the resort’s recent recognition as Oceania’s Leading Family Resort at the 2024 World Travel Awards speaks volumes. Ready to create family stories in paradise? The Family Getaway package is the perfect place to start.

FAMILY FAVOURITES

Dream Time in Fiji

The Knight family decided to head to Fiji to celebrate a family birthday, and wow, were they blown away!

The moment they arrived at the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa, they felt all the stress melt away.

Why Fiji?

Friends had recommended the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa, and they were spot on. The beachfront room was just a short stroll to the restaurants and pool area, which was so convenient – especially with the kids. Speaking of which, the pools were the highlight for them (there’s more than one!), and I can’t overstate how incredible it was to hire a nanny through the hotel. She kept an eye on the kids, swam with them, and played while we truly unwound – sometimes even sneaking in a nap by the pool. Absolute game changer.

Eating Our Way Through Paradise

We fully embraced the local culture during our stay. We caught a cultural performance that the whole family loved, and I made it my mission to try every breakfast option (including the Fijian dishes, which were packed with fresh veggies and so tasty). We were honestly spoilt for choice at mealtimes.

So Much to Do... Or Not!

Between the kids loving the pools and water park, us adults enjoying drinks in the sun, and cruising around on the resort’s mini golf carts, we never found ourselves bored. The layout of the resort was super relaxed, and the people – the kindest and most welcoming you’ll ever meet – were incredible. There was constant singing and smiling. We packed in so much: from boat trips to diving, every day was full of options. It’s just one of those places where you can do as much or as little as you like.

Memories the Kids Won’t Forget

The kids (12 and 6) ate and swam for seven straight days – and not a single tantrum! One of the cutest highlights was our youngest getting braids and loving them so much he went back again for more. He looked so adorable and was so proud. They also loved playing football on the huge grass area right in front of our room, which overlooked the beach and those breathtaking sunsets. It was the perfect spot for them to run around and burn off energy while we soaked in the view. Evenings were blissful: they’d settle in with a movie on the iPad while we sat on the balcony, wine in hand, watching sunsets like I’ve never seen back home in New Zealand.

The Day Cruise: Like Something from a Movie

If I had to pick one standout moment, it would be the day cruise. We spent the day on this massive catamaran with a fully stocked bar and a gourmet lunch. They took us to a sandbar out in the

The Knight Family

middle of the ocean where we could swim and snorkel – and yes, they even brought drinks out to us on the sandbar. I genuinely had to pinch myself; it felt like something straight out of a movie.

Travelling with Kids? No Worries

I know travelling with kids can sometimes be tricky, but honestly, not in Fiji. It’s like the whole place is designed to make family holidays easy. The pace of life slows right down – you slip into Fiji time, where everything feels simpler, more beautiful, and completely stress-free.

Next Time? More Exploring

If (well, when) we go back, I’d love to explore more of the surrounding islands and check out some of the other resorts for day visits. There’s just so much to see, and you can easily hop around to swim, eat, and relax somewhere new each day.

My Advice? Just Book It!

If you’re sitting on the fence about a Pacific Island holiday, let me be the one to tell you: don’t think, just book it. Fiji truly is paradise. You hear that all the time, but it’s not just a cliché. It honestly felt like stepping into an episode of Fantasy Island.

The Perfect Family Paradise

KOHALA COAST, HAWAII ISLAND © HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY (HTA) / TOR JOHNSON

Hawai’i blends natural wonders with kid-friendly fun in a way few destinations can match. Your family might start the morning learning to surf on gentle waves, spend the afternoon exploring volcanic landscapes that spark young minds, and end the day watching the sunset at a traditional lū’au.

The magic of Hawai’i lies in how seamlessly it combines adventure with education. Let your kids spot migrating whales, discover colourful fish while snorkelling in protected bays, or learn about ancient Hawaiian traditions at cultural sites.

Four islands stand out as family favourites: Maui, with its famous beaches and the scenic Road to Hāna; Kaua’i, wrapped in movie-set rainforests; O’ahu, blending city buzz with tropical fun; and the Big Island, where active volcanoes create an otherworldly playground. Each offers its own unique flavour of paradise while remaining perfectly family-friendly.

O‘AHU: ADVENTURE STARTS HERE

O‘ahu is where family adventures come in all shapes and sizes, and every day brings a new discovery. At the Polynesian Cultural Centre in the town of Lā‘ie, kids will soon become junior cultural experts. They can throw spears (safely!), crack coconuts, and watch master fire dancers light up the night.

At the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, dinosaur-loving kids can geek out over ancient Hawaiian artefacts while you all enjoy an amazing planetarium show. Want to pick up some authentic Hawaiian skills? Head to the Royal Hawaiian Centre, where the whole family can learn to make leis, dance hula, and strum a ukulele – all for free!

When it’s time for some outdoor thrills, hop over to Kualoa Ranch, where movie buffs can explore filming locations from their favourite blockbusters while racing through tropical valleys on ATVs or horseback.

Renting a car is also a great idea. You’ll have the freedom to explore at your own pace and discover hidden gems like the Dole Plantation’s giant pineapple maze (plus, their Dole Whip is legendary!) or head up the North Shore to see some of the world’s most famous surf breaks.

And don’t forget to visit Pearl Harbour. Here, the story of the Second World War will come to life. The attack by waves of

Japanese aircraft on 7 December 1941 destroyed or damaged several warships, including the battleship Arizona, and a visit to her memorial is a moving experience for all.

MAUI: ISLAND MAGIC

Want to know why Maui tops so many family holiday wish lists? Imagine snorkelling alongside rainbow-coloured fish at Molokini Crater, chasing waterfalls on the legendary Road to Hāna, or watching your kids’ faces light up as they spot their first humpback whale breaching in the distance.

This slice of paradise knows how to keep everyone in the family grinning. Little ones will love splashing in the gentle waves at Baby Beach or building sandcastles at Kama‘ole Beach Parks, where the calm waters are bathtub warm.

Adventure-seeking teens can catch their first wave with a surf lesson or soar through the jungle on a zipline course. At the Maui Ocean Centre, kids can come face-to-face with Hawaiian marine life in what feels like an underwater journey through the Pacific.

Haleakala National Park is also well worth a visit. The sunrise tour is the most popular way to see the park, but a 3am hotel transfer may be a touch too early. The other option is to do a day visit, where you can hike and visit the summit. Either way, the kids will love the dramatic ‘Mars-like’ landscape.

WAIKIKI BEACH, OAHU © HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY (HTA) / BEN ONO

THE BIG ISLAND: WHERE FIRE MEETS PARADISE

Think Hawai‘i is just about beaches? The Big Island will change your mind. Here, your kids can walk on ground younger than they are, thanks to Kīlauea volcano’s constant landscaping work. This is the Hawai‘i most visitors never see – a place where black sand beaches meet snow-capped mountains, and eleven different climate zones create a natural wonderland that feels like several holidays in one.

At Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, your family can explore otherworldly lava tubes and watch the glow of molten rock light up the night sky. Along the Hāmākua Coast, chase waterfalls through rainforest trails or zoom between tropical trees on zipline adventures that’ll have everyone screaming with joy.

The Kona Coast serves up some of Hawai‘i’s most kid-friendly spots, like Kikaua Point Park – a natural swimming pool where even tiny tots can safely splash with tropical fish. For families with older kids (12+), nothing beats night snorkelling with gentle giant manta rays – an experience that tops many visitors’ “best thing we’ve ever done” lists.

KAUA‘I: YOUR FAMILY’S GREEN PARADISE

Think of Kaua‘i as nature’s ultimate playground. On this lush Hawaiian island, waterfalls tumble through emerald valleys, mountain streams become natural water slides, and every beach feels like it was designed with families in mind.

Ready for some uniquely Kaua‘i adventures? Hop into a tube and float through century-old sugar plantation canals, turning irrigation history into a giggling good time. At Lydgate Beach Park, kids can splash in protected swimming areas while you keep an eye on them from what might be Hawai‘i’s most impressive playground – we’re talking 16,000 square feet of climbing, sliding, and playing space.

Any daredevils in the family? Let them test their courage on kidfriendly zipline courses (perfect for anyone aged 7 or older), or pile into an ATV for a muddy exploration of 22,000 acres of tropical terrain. For gentler thrills, catch your first wave in Po‘ipū, where the waves seem custom-made for beginner surfers, or take a peaceful river cruise to the famous Fern Grotto.

Kaua‘i knows how to keep things interesting between beach visits. The Smith Family Garden Lū‘au and Lū‘au Kalamakū turn dinner into an unforgettable show, mixing mouthwatering local foods with performances that’ll have everyone dancing in their seats. Whether you’re galloping through Silver Falls Ranch on horseback or sampling fresh brews at the Kaua‘i Coffee Company, this garden island serves up the kind of holiday memories that stick around long after the sand’s been shaken from your shoes!

FAMILY FAVOURITES

Family Action

The Simpson family hadn’t been on a big holiday for a few years, but Hawaii had always been a favorite getaway—though only for quick trips. This time, they were determined to do it right, bringing the whole family along for an unforgettable island adventure.

What made you choose the Pacific Islands for your family holiday?

We hadn’t been on a big family holiday for four years. Air New Zealand had airfares on special, so we decided to take the boys to Hawaii. We had both been before, but only for short trips, and always wanted to go back.

How did you decide on the specific resort?

I did some online research and used my prior knowledge to choose where we stayed this time. We stayed at Outrigger Reef first, then moved to Outrigger Waikiki, and we loved both places. We enjoyed the quieter atmosphere at the Reef (less foot traffic), but also loved the buzz of Waikiki-especially since we were only there for a few nights. Plus, it was close to plenty of shops and restaurants.

What were the most family-friendly features of the resorts you stayed at?

The pools! The beach access! The restaurants! All the things kids love-food, drinks, and water! Plus, having handy ABC stores nearby to grab supplies was a bonus.

What were some of the unique experiences your family enjoyed?

We loved Pearl Harbour, hiking Diamond Head, sailing on the catamaran, surfing, the beach, and of course, the food and drinks! My kids especially loved the shopping (probably because we paid for everything!). Other highlights included swimming with turtles, driving around the island, and visiting different beaches and tourist attractions.

What aspects of the trip made it special for your children?

They actually loved all of it. The big plane ride was exciting for them, and starting the trip by catching a limousine from the airport (which we had organised) was a fun experience. They especially loved the bottomless refills of soda at restaurants!

How did you balance relaxation for the adults with fun for the kids?

Our kids are at a great age, and we all enjoy spending time together. We would let them choose what to do during the day, then go out for lunch and some downtime, followed by dinner and an evening activity-which they loved. They never complained once!

The Simpson Family

What were the best local attractions or day trips you’d recommend?

Diamond Head - Great for all ages, from toddlers to the elderly. Pearl Harbour - A must-see.

Catamaran sailing - A fantastic experience.

Surfing - You have to try it while in Hawaii!

Were there any challenges in travelling with children?

The biggest challenge was the long flight and the kids not sleeping on the plane-but they had a nap once we arrived, and then they were good to go. The main thing was reminding them to drink lots of water!

Would you do anything differently next time?

Next time, we will definitely stay on one of the outer islands, which we wish we had done this time. We’d also spend a few nights in the North Shore of Oahu.

What advice would you give to other families?

Try to fit in as much as you can while you’re there, but definitely schedule some chill days at the beach. The scenery is just beautiful, and you don’t want to rush through it all.

What are your top tips for making the most of a family holiday in the Pacific?

Ask others who have been - first-hand recommendations are invaluable.

Do your research and have a loose plan of what you want to do. Book in advance so you don’t miss out on activities or restaurants.

Create unforgettable family memories just steps from Waikiki Beach. Explore Hawaii’s natural beauty with convenient access to kid-friendly beaches, nearby Honolulu Zoo, and Waikiki Aquarium.

Family Adventures to the Next Level

There comes a time when an ideal family holiday shifts from checking your youngsters into kid’s club and savouring time out alone, to wanting to create lifelong memories experiencing epic adventures together that you will retell for years to come.

This is where Niue takes family holidays to the next level and provides the most unique landscape to explore – both above and below the water.

Swimming with humpback whales, catching 30+ kilo wahoo and tuna, scuba diving or snorkelling in gin-clear water, and nighttime missions catching uga (Niue’s coconut crab) are just a few of the experiences on offer once your kids get older and you’re ready to share family adventures together.

As one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls, Niue is unlike other Pacific Islands, with amazing rock pools the size of tennis courts to snorkel in, as well as caves and chasms to discover and explore.

When kids become a bit more ‘self-sufficient’ and are both competent and confident in the water, Niue provides the perfect playground for families to experience new adventures together. Many families return year after year for more.

EASY TO GET TO, EVEN EASIER TO EXPLORE

Touching down in Niue after a quick three-and-a-half-hour flight from Auckland, you are greeted with not only warm temperatures all year round but also the most warm and hospitable welcome possible. It’s best to pre-arrange a rental car for your arrival, as Niue is large – 64km around its ring road. Driving is easy though, and tracks and sites are very well signposted all over the island, making the whole island your ‘one island, one resort’ to uncover.

Unlike many islands, Niue’s reef runs around the island, which means snorkelling and swimming are best in rock pools dotted around the coastline. As well as providing easy access from the land, this also means you are in a confined pool-like space, which gives many kids (and parents) confidence to snorkel in safety.

Operators can take you outside the reef to snorkel, as well as swim with the resident spinner dolphins and seasonal humpback whales. With visibility up to 80 metres, it’s well worth the trip. However, most days you’ll find yourself packing your snorkelling gear in the car boot and setting off on your own adventure down the 30+ sea tracks Niue has to offer.

OCEAN ADVENTURES FOR ALL AGES

From July through to October, humpback whales migrate up from Antarctica to the warm waters of Niue. If your kids have reached that magic age of 10 and are confident in the ocean, you can experience a family bucket list tick many only dream of –swimming with these gentle giants in Niue’s crystal-clear waters.

Scuba diving together is another dream for many ocean-loving families, and Niue’s safe waters provide an interesting playground to explore. From underwater caves to sandy gullies, the team from Niue Blue ensures your next family calendar is filled with epic photos. If you’re lucky, the resident spinner dolphins will come to play while you’re between dives.

Fishing can be a polarising family activity, with seasickness and the lengthy time it takes often putting families off investing money to spend time bobbing in the ocean together for a day. Niue breaks this mould entirely and, again, it’s thanks to the close reef that runs around the island. As the seabed drops away so dramatically, deep sea fishing happens almost instantly, with lines dropped as quickly as 10 minutes from leaving the wharf.

Again, hugging the coastline means there is little motion, and Niue’s fast-paced sport fishing leaves no time for anyone to feel unwell or get bored. Many of Niue’s skippers are young dads themselves, so they relate extremely well to family dynamics and engage kids in all aspects of the fishing adventure. It is certainly ‘action stations’ when wahoo strike, and everyone in the family will be jumping to take the rod.

Arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend. Safe, no traffic and no queues. Relax or explore. Swim, fish and dive in the clearest waters in the pacific. The world’s only Dark Sky Nation welcomes you to the way life used to be; the way life should be. www.niueisland.com

NIUE’S NIGHTLIFE

Nightlife in Niue is limited, and after a day of exploration, many parents and kids ‘crash’ early. However, do make sure you look up and enjoy the night sky, as Niue is also the world’s only Dark Sky Nation. Or, if you still have energy to burn, head out with a local guide to look for uga crab, the local land-dwelling crab that feeds on coconuts. Tours offer the chance to hunt for huge uga, which are a local delicacy!

WHERE TO STAY

Families have a choice of different accommodation types, from the Scenic Matavai Resort to family-friendly selfcatering homes, and intergenerational travel is also proving popular where several units are booked next to each other, or even an entire accommodation complex, such as Namukulu Cottages, Taloa Heights or Tuaga Lodge.

NATURAL WONDERS, HIDDEN TREASURES

There are massive cave systems and sea tracks found all over the island that can be explored with ease via well-signposted tracks. Many of these sites have well-maintained showers and toilets, and the walks vary in length from five minutes to a few hours. Think of them as family treasure hunts, but you just don’t know what’s down the path... yet.

A favourite for many is Talava Arches, a moderate one-hour walk that takes you through the bush and into a cave system before reaching a spectacular coastal arch. Don’t forget your snorkelling gear for the crystal-clear rock pools at the end. On your way back, take the five-minute detour to the amazing Matapa Chasm – a refreshing swimming spot once reserved for Niue’s kings.

Another family favourite is Avaiki Cave, only accessible at low tide. Swim through cave chambers and vibrant rock pools in a setting straight out of a James Bond movie. Adventurous families should head to Togo Chasm or descend 155 steps into the freshwater wonder of Anapala Chasm – timing your visit for midday light is key. Round off your adventure with a lazy Sunday at Washaway Café.

FOOD, CULTURE, AND FAMILY CONNECTION

Niue’s cafés and restaurants will leave parents and children filled with not only delicious food and drinks but also personable service from locals. Washaway Café is only open on Sundays and is perhaps the last honesty bar in the world. Enjoy homemade burgers, fish focaccias, and the safe beach at Avatele. Other favourites include Hio Café, Fana Café, and Kaiika for authentic Japanese fare.

A visit to the primary school’s assembly, the small but well-curated Fale Tau Tāoga museum, or a cultural performance at one of the many island umu buffet nights will fill your soul with song and dance. Uga crab hunts or plantation tours add a hands-on element to your holiday. The kids will learn from the land, the people, and each other.

ALREADY PLANNING YOUR RETURN

As your week (or two) comes to an end, under a sky full of stars, there is a high chance you start planning your next trip to this diverse paradise. One thing is for sure: once you discover the beauty of Niue, both above and under the water, it is a destination you will be drawn back to... just like the migrating humpback whales.

A World of

Wonders

With its dazzling turquoise lagoons, powdery white sand beaches, and dramatic emerald peaks, The Islands of Tahiti are a dream destination for family adventures. Spanning 118 islands and atolls, this South Pacific paradise is perfect for families wanting a mix of relaxation, adventure, and cultural discovery. Whether you’re keen on snorkelling in vibrant coral gardens, hiking through lush rainforests, or diving into the rich traditions of Polynesian culture, Tahiti has something for everyone—plus a touch of island magic.

THE OCEAN: NATURE’S PLAYGROUND

In The Islands of Tahiti, the ocean isn’t just a pretty backdrop— it’s woven into everyday life.

Tahitians have a deep connection with the sea, and as visitors, families will soon find themselves embracing it too. Whether you’re after high-energy water sports, gentle family-friendly adventures, or close encounters with marine life, Tahiti’s crystal-clear waters are the perfect playground.

For an adrenaline rush, you can’t go past Tahiti’s legendary surf breaks. Whether you’re a crew of experienced surfers or newbies keen to give it a go, there are plenty of spots to suit all skill levels. Prefer something a little more laid-back? Paddleboarding along the tranquil rivers of Raiatea is a great way to soak up the lush tropical scenery at a more relaxed pace! And for those who like their thrills with a breeze, Moorea’s shores are a prime spot for kite surfing, where you can harness the wind and skim across the turquoise lagoon waters.

For families with younger kids, snorkelling in Bora Bora’s famous lagoon is a bucket list activity. The calm, shallow waters make it easy for little ones to explore, and with schools of brightly coloured fish darting through the coral, it’s like stepping into a reallife aquarium.

Want to take things a step further? An underwater helmet dive in Moorea is a fantastic option for all ages - especially for those who aren’t super confident swimmers. Pop on a special helmet, and you can literally walk along the seabed, surrounded by marine life, without needing any diving experience.

And if you’re keen to experience marine life in its natural habitat, hop on a boat tour to swim with graceful stingrays, watch dolphins playing in the waves, or - if you visit during migration season (typically July to November) - witness the unforgettable sight of humpback whales as they pass through Tahiti’s waters.

INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS

Family holidays are all about fun, but they can also be a chance to spark curiosity and learn something new along the way. In Tahiti, kids (and grown-ups!) can swap screens for snorkels, meet marine life up close, and get hands-on with conservation projects that make a real difference.

In Moorea, families can take part in the Coral Gardeners programme, ‘adopting’ a coral and watching as it’s carefully planted onto the reef—an awesome way to learn about marine ecosystems while giving back to the ocean. Many resorts also run eco-classes designed just for kids, making conservation fun, interactive, and easy to understand.

BORA BORA © GRÉGOIRE LE BACON
MOOREA © HÉLÈNE HAVARD
MOOREA © TAHITI FLY SHOOT

At The Brando Resort, young explorers can go behind the scenes at the island’s research stations, where scientists are hard at work protecting Tahiti’s unique wildlife. Over on Tikehau, Ninamu Resort runs a marine tagging programme, where families can watch researchers tracking fish populations and learning more about life beneath the waves.

For a close-up encounter with Tahiti’s incredible sea life, the Te Mana o Te Moana Conservation Association at the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort & Spa offers guided tours where visitors can meet rescued sea turtles and learn about their rehabilitation. And in Bora Bora, the newly opened turtle sanctuary at the Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa gives families the rare chance to see these gentle creatures up close while supporting conservation efforts.

EXPLORE TAHITI’S WILD SIDE

Tahiti’s beauty isn’t just about its dreamy lagoons - the landscapes inland are just as jaw-dropping. Think lush rainforests, hidden waterfalls, and epic viewpoints that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard. For families keen to swap the sand for adventure, there’s a whole lot to explore.

If you’re up for a real off-road experience, jump in a 4WD and rumble through the Valley of Papenoo in Tahiti. This hidden valley is a paradise of winding rivers, towering waterfalls, and dense, jungle-like greenery. Kids and adults will love the thrill of bouncing along dirt roads and swimming in secluded waterholes - it’s a proper adventure for all ages.

On Raiatea, a guided nature walk is the best way to discover the rare and beautifully fragrant Tiare ‘apetahi flower, a bloom so special it only exists on this one island. After something a little more relaxed? On Tahiti, the Vaihapi Water Gardens in Mataiea are perfect for an easy-going wander, with vibrant floral gardens, trickling streams, and gentle waterfalls. It’s the kind of place where kids can run wild while parents enjoy a peaceful stroll.

For families craving a bit of action, Rainbow Park in Tahiti and Tiki Parc in Moorea bring the fun. Ziplining through the treetops, tackling wobbly rope bridges, and swinging through jungle obstacle courses - this is where little (and not-so-little) adventurers can unleash their inner Tarzan and really let loose.

YOUR ISLAND FAMILY RETREAT AWAITS

Nestled on the serene shores of Moorea, Niu Beach Hotel is the ultimate family escape. With spacious bungalows, safe swimming beaches and fully equiped kitchens. Every detail is designed to make family vacations effortless and enjoyable. Discover the joys of reconnecting with loved ones in paradise.

EXPERIENCE THE SPIRIT OF TAHITI

Tahiti isn’t just a feast for the eyes - it’s a place rich with culture, where families are welcomed with open arms to experience the islands’ rich traditions. The Tahitian people deeply honour their Mā’ohi ancestors, whose legends, customs, and way of life still shape the islands today. At the heart of it all is Mana, a sacred force that flows through the mountains, valleys, lagoons, and the people themselves.

For a magical dive into Polynesian traditions, families can set off on a stargazing and navigation tour, where expert guides reveal how ancient voyagers navigated the vast Pacific using nothing but the stars—just like Moana! It’s a chance to step back in time and see the night sky through the eyes of the great explorers who first charted these waters.

For a more hands-on cultural experience, a visit to the Musée de Tahiti et des Îles is a must. Interactive exhibits bring Tahitian history to life, making it fun and engaging for kids and adults alike.

Whether you’re after excitement, relaxation, or a mix of both, Vanuatu has it all.

Family holidays are all about hitting pause on busy schedules back home. That’s where Vanuatu shines. It’s a place where families can slow down, reconnect, and dive into something totally different. For visiting families Port Vila will be the first port-of-call.

While this bustling little town sustained damage in the December 2025 earthquake, it shouldn’t put off visiting families – as many of the most popular local attractions sit outside this area and operating as per usual. On top of that, a majority of the most popular family accommodation options are open and welcoming families as they always have.

Flying Family Fun

Vanuatu’s rainforest is spectacular from the ground—but nothing beats the pure thrill of flying through the treetops, four stories high, with sweeping views over Mele Bay and Port Vila Harbour. Welcome to the Jungle Zipline Adventure, where excitement meets epic scenery in a half-day experience the whole family will be talking about for years.

Strapped into a harness, you’ll zip between towering trees, glide above a waterfall, cross an 80-metre-high canyon, and tackle two wobbly suspension bridges. Whether you’re the fearless type or need a little encouragement to take that first leap, the rush of zipping through the jungle is unbeatable—and totally worth it!

The best part? It’s designed for everyone—from adventurous six-year-olds to fun-loving grandparents. The friendly crew will pick you up from your Port Vila hotel, and all you need to bring is closed-toe shoes, insect repellent, a camera, and comfy clothes that work with a harness.

The Blue Lagoon

Another spot that guarantees a good time for the whole family, it’s the Blue Lagoon. An easy 30 minute drive from Port Vila, this stunning oasis is an almost unreal shade of blue, thanks to a mix of freshwater springs and ocean tides - and yes, it looks just as good in real life as it does in photos! The real fun kicks off with the Tarzan-style rope swings - a firm favourite with kids and grown-ups alike. Whether it’s your first go or you’re perfecting your manu, launching into the cool, crystal-clear water never gets old. The lagoon itself is calm and easy to swim in, making it perfect for little ones too, while shady picnic spots invite you to kick back and take it all in. With easy access, great facilities, and non-stop fun, the Blue Lagoon is the kind of place you’ll want to revisit before your trip’s over. Note: You’ll need to bring cash with you to the Blue Lagoon. It’s 500 vatu for adults, and 300 vatu for kids, so be sure to bring some coins with you to pay the entry fee. This money goes to the locals who own the land where the lagoon is located.

Magical Mele Cascades

The short trip to Mele Cascades and Waterfall is a classic Vanuatu activity - and it’s easy to see why! Just a 10–15 minute drive from Port Vila, this lush oasis is perfect for a familyfriendly adventure. The 20-minute walk to the falls winds through tropical greenery, with a few inclines and steps along the way. It’s not too demanding, so just take it slow, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the jungle setting. At the end of the trail, the reward is well worth it - a crystal-clear natural pool fed by a stunning 30-metre waterfall.

TANNA

Vanuatu’s adventures don’t stop at Efate—far from it! A quick flight south from Port Vila lands you on Tanna, an island packed with natural wonders that easily rival the best in the South Pacific. For families with older kids, a trip here is like stepping straight into the pages of an adventure book.

Home to just over 30,000 people, Tanna is a place where life moves at its own unhurried pace. You can snorkel through some of Vanuatu’s most pristine coral reefs, ride horseback through lush jungle, chase hidden waterfalls, and experience a culture that proudly holds tight to its ancient traditions.

But the real showstopper? Mount Yasur—one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes. A bumpy 4WD ride takes you within a short 10-minute walk of the crater’s edge, where you’ll step into a surreal, ash-covered landscape that feels like another planet. The volcano’s activity changes day to day, but the real magic happens at dusk. As night falls, glowing lava shoots into the sky, lighting up the darkness like a natural fireworks display. If your kids love a good fireworks show, just wait until they see this—times a hundred!

Bigger kids—and let’s be honest, the adults too—will be blown away by Tanna’s breathtaking Blue Cave. Sunlight streams through a hole in the cave’s roof, turning the water a mesmerising shade of iridescent blue. It’s the kind of place that feels almost otherworldly, making it an absolute must for swimmers and adventure lovers alike.

Got a GoPro or a waterproof camera? You’ll want it handy—this is one photo op you won’t want to miss! And the adventure doesn’t end inside the cave. Outside, natural rock ledges double as epic jumping platforms for those keen to take the plunge, adding an extra dose of thrill to this unforgettable experience.

Nature’s Giant

For a family adventure that’s as awe-inspiring as it is unique, visit Tanna’s incredible Giant Banyan Tree in Leitouapam, where this enormous natural wonder, cared for by the local community, stretches 200 metres wide and towers 80 metres high — its sprawling roots twisting and tangling into a breathtaking spectacle. Kids and grown-ups will love wandering beneath its vast canopy, where the hanging roots and dappled light create a scene straight out of nature’s own playground. Local guides share fascinating stories about the tree’s ecological and cultural importance and the deep connection between Tanna’s people and their land.

SANTO

A short flight north from Efate (about 50 minutes), Espiritu Santoknown simply as Santo - is Vanuatu’s largest island and a place of striking contrasts. Once home to one of the biggest military bases in the Pacific during World War II, it was a bustling hub of American troops, airstrips, and supply depots.

Today, that wartime history lingers in relics and sunken wrecks, but the island itself couldn’t feel more peaceful. With its quiet villages, untouched beaches, and jungle-fringed blue holes, Santo now moves at a completely different pace - one where nature takes centre stage, and “island time” is the only schedule that matters!

For families, a scenic coastal drive from Luganville is a good place to start an adventure. You’ll wind past some of Vanuatu’s most stunning beaches. About 45 minutes north, you’ll reach Champagne Beach - a picture-perfect stretch of soft white sand, warm, crystalclear water, and lush rainforest reaching right to the shore. It’s the kind of spot that feels almost too good to be real. One of the best things about Champagne Beach? It’s often blissfully quiet, with not a resort or developments anywhere to be seen - just the occasional local family enjoying the same pristine spot.

Santo is also famous for its incredible blue holes—natural freshwater pools hidden in the jungle. One of the most accessible is Matevulu Blue Hole, just a short drive inland (you’ll even pass an old military airstrip on the way). Surrounded by dense greenery, this peaceful, shady oasis is perfect for cooling off. The crystal-clear water is less buoyant than the sea, making for an easy, relaxing swim. And for adventurous kids (and parents!), a giant rope swing hangs from an ancient tree - ideal for an exhilarating leap into the blue.

Mount Hope Float – Waterfall Tour

Riri Blue Hole – A Hidden Gem

For families looking to cool off in one of Santo’s most beautiful natural spots, Riri Blue Hole is well worth a visit. Tucked away in the jungle just south of Matevulu Blue Hole, this freshwater pool is a brilliant shade of blue, surrounded by lush greenery, and perfect for a refreshing swim. Getting there is part of the fun. You can drive 30 minutes from Luganville or take the more scenic option—an outrigger canoe trip up the Riri River with a local guide. Drifting along the calm, clear water through the jungle makes for a peaceful and memorable experience. Riri tends to be quieter than some of Santo’s other blue holes, making it a great spot for kids to splash about while parents enjoy the relaxed surroundings. With a wooden platform for jumping, plenty of shady spots to sit, and cool, crystal-clear water to swim in, it’s an easy and enjoyable outing for the whole family.

For families keen to experience Santo’s wild beauty, the Mount Hope Float with Santo Heritage Tours offers a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. This half-day trip takes you deep into the island’s lush interior, where you’ll float down a crystal-clear jungle river, walk through untouched rainforest, and climb a cascading waterfall — all guided by a knowledgeable local team. The journey starts with a 90-minute ride from Luganville, bouncing along in the back of a truck — a fun way to soak up the scenery before the real adventure begins. At the river, you’ll drift gently downstream for about 40 minutes, the cool freshwater carrying you past dense jungle and towering trees. The water is refreshing but not too chilly — just right for a tropical escape. After the peaceful float, the tempo picks up as you trek up the waterfall. Then it’s time for a well-earned break, with fresh local fruits and snacks to refuel before the final walk back to the vehicle. Whether you’re looking for a bit of adventure or just a chance to enjoy Santo’s natural beauty, this is one of those family experiences that lingers long after the trip is over.

Nature’s Ultimate Island Family Escape

Some family holidays are about theme parks and kids’ clubs. Others are about something different altogether - exploring new places, learning about different cultures, and discovering landscapes that feel untouched. American Samoa is that kind of destination. It’s not about big resorts or busy beaches; it’s about slowing down, spending time together, and experiencing an island where nature and tradition take centre stage.

From the moment you arrive, American Samoa feels different. The pace is slower, the people are welcoming, and the land itself is a playground for adventure. Whether you’re hiking through lush rainforests, swimming in crystal-clear waters, or learning about centuries-old traditions, this is a place where lasting family memories are made. Here’s how to make the most of an unforgettable trip with your loved ones.

ARRIVAL IN TUTUILA: THE START OF YOUR ISLAND JOURNEY

Your adventure begins as soon as you land on Tutuila, the largest island in American Samoa. Towering green mountains and a rugged coastline set the scene, while the scent of tropical fruit and ocean air fills your senses. Driving along the island’s winding roads, you’ll pass colourful villages where children play outside and families gather in open-air fales (traditional houses). It doesn’t take long to realise - this is a place where community and nature are part of everyday life.

For families, Tutuila is the ideal starting point. It’s home to Pago Pago, the capital, where you’ll find markets, local eateries, and historical sites, but it also offers easy access to hidden beaches, hiking trails, and marine sanctuaries perfect for snorkelling.

FAGASA BAY: A PLACE OF LEGENDS AND MARINE LIFE

A short drive inland brings you to Fagasa Bay, a beautiful inlet steeped in local legend. It’s said that a Polynesian navigator named Liava’a once transformed his crew into dolphins here, sending them out to search for his lost daughter, Sina. To this day, the return of the atule fish to these waters is celebrated with a traditional ceremony, reinforcing the deep connection between Samoan culture and the sea.

It’s a great spot for kids to explore tidal pools, watch local fishermen at work, and hear stories passed down for generations. If you visit at the right time of year, you might even witness the annual atule migration—a natural event full of cultural significance.

FAGATELE BAY NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY: A SNORKELLER’S PARADISE

For families who love the water, Fagatele Bay is a must-visit. This protected marine sanctuary is home to vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, and tropical fish, making it one of the best places in American Samoa for snorkelling. The bay is only accessible on foot through the village of Futiga, adding a sense of adventure to the experience.

Whether you’re wading in the shallows with younger children or diving deeper to spot schools of fish and reef sharks, the underwater world here is teeming with life. It’s also a great opportunity to teach kids about conservation—how marine sanctuaries protect fragile ecosystems and why these reefs are so important.

POLA ISLAND
FAGATELE BAY NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY

POLA ISLAND CLIFFS: A WALK WITH A VIEW

If your family enjoys hiking, the Pola Island Cliffs offer one of the most breathtaking views on the island. Located in the National Park of American Samoa, this short but rewarding trail winds through lush rainforest before opening up to dramatic cliffs that drop straight into the ocean. Keep an eye out for seabirds nesting in the rocks—some of them are found nowhere else in the world.

It’s an easy walk for older kids, and the panoramic views make it well worth the effort. Standing at the edge, watching the waves crash against the cliffs, it’s hard not to feel in awe of nature’s raw beauty.

MASSACRE BAY: HISTORY AND HIDDEN BEACHES

Tucked along the northern coast, Massacre Bay is a place where history and nature come together. Despite its sombre name— linked to a tragic 18th-century clash between French explorers and Samoan warriors—the bay itself is peaceful and incredibly scenic. The sheltered waters are great for snorkelling or simply paddling with younger children, while the volcanic cliffs provide a striking backdrop. For families interested in history, it’s a great spot to reflect on the stories of the past while enjoying the beauty of the present.

BLUNTS POINT: A GLIMPSE INTO WWII HISTORY

For a step back in time, take a short hike up to Blunts Point, overlooking Pago Pago Harbour. Here, you’ll find two World War II naval guns, a reminder of American Samoa’s strategic role in the Pacific. It’s a great stop for families with curious kids who love history—standing next to the giant cannons and looking out over the harbour brings the past to life. The view from the top is also stunning, making it a worthwhile stop even if history isn’t your main interest.

TIA SEU LUPE MOUNDS: DISCOVERING ANCIENT TRADITIONS

Not far from Pago Pago, the Tia Seu Lupe Mounds offer a fascinating look at Samoan history. These ancient star-shaped mounds were once used by chiefs for the traditional sport of pigeon-catching, a practice that symbolised status and leadership. Walking through this site, it’s easy to imagine what life was like centuries ago. It’s also a great place to introduce kids to the idea that history isn’t just found in books—it’s all around us, in the landscapes, the stories, and the traditions that are still carried on today.

BLUNTS POINT

FA’A SAMOA: EXPERIENCING THE SAMOAN WAY OF LIFE

One of the most special parts of visiting American Samoa is experiencing Fa’a Samoa—the Samoan way of life. Family and respect are at the heart of everything, and visitors are welcomed with warmth and generosity.

Whether you’re invited to share a meal with a local family, take part in a traditional ‘ava ceremony, or watch a fire dance at a village event, these moments offer a deeper connection to the culture. For children, it’s an opportunity to see a way of life where family comes first and traditions are valued.

THE GRAND FINALE: ROSE ATOLL – A HIDDEN TREASURE

For those seeking a true off-the-grid adventure, Rose Atoll is the ultimate destination. This protected sanctuary, home to rare seabirds and pink-hued coral reefs, is one of the most pristine places in the Pacific. It’s not open to the general public, but even knowing it exists—untouched and wild—is a reminder of how precious these natural places are.

AN ISLAND ESCAPE LIKE NO OTHER

At the end of your journey, it’s clear that American Samoa isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place to experience. The mountains, beaches, and villages aren’t just scenery; they’re part of a way of life that feels welcoming and real. For families looking for something different—a holiday that’s about discovery, adventure, and connection—this is an island escape like no other. Whether you’re hiking through rainforests, snorkelling in marine sanctuaries, or simply sitting on a quiet beach watching the sunset, every moment here feels like a reminder of what truly matters: time together, shared experiences, and the beauty of the world around us.
