Fiji Airways: Connecting the Pacific

Kiwi travellers seeking a serene island getaway now have more reasons to celebrate with Fiji Airways' comprehensive flight offerings from New Zealand. Daily services from Auckland, along with flights up to twice a week from Wellington and three times weekly from Christchurch, are making Fiji more accessible than ever before.

Not just a tropical destination in its own right, Fiji is fast becoming a popular stopover for travellers wanting to discover the wider wonders of the Pacific.

Indeed, the national carrier's schedule facilitates further adventures into the Pacific's heart, from the historic allure of Tonga and the vibrant Samoan culture to the untouched beauty of Vanuatu, New Caledonia's French flair, and the Solomon Islands' wild landscapes. With multiple flights per week to these destinations, Pacific Island-hopping has become a convenient reality.

As the sole operator of the Airbus A350 out of New Zealand, Fiji Airways provides a travel experience that's both comfortable and eco-conscious. The increased capacity on this popular route means more opportunities to recline in an aircraft celebrated for its spacious design.

In-flight, Fiji Airways doesn't just fly; it impresses. Its accolades speak for themselves—recognised for outstanding service, comfortable seating, and an entertainment system that has garnered its own praise. It's an airline where the journey matches the joy of the destinations it connects.

Unique to Fiji Airways is a pioneering approach to streamlining the departure process with the 'Resort Check-In' service. This superconvenient innovation allows guests at select resorts to check in for their flights — avoiding airport queues. Luggage is tagged and boarding passes are issued. In short, guests can savor every last moment of their island holiday before a swift journey direct to airport security and immigration.

Such thoughtful touches are reflected in the selection of resorts offering this service, which includes global brands such as the Sofitel, Sheraton, and Hilton — a list expected to grow. It's a nod to the seamless experience Fiji Airways aims to provide from departure to destination and back.

For those plotting their next escape, the rejuvenated Fiji Airways experience might just be what you're looking for. A deeper dive into the airline's offerings can provide the itinerary for your next South Pacific adventure.

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort guests play their part

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort has been active in coral planting activities that invite guests to be part of the Outrigger’s ZONE conservation initiative that provides experiences which protect our oceans and coral reefs. Guest involvement not only allows them to learn of and experience the delights of ocean coral, but also supports local efforts to restore coral reefs that are threatened by pollution, unsustainable fishing practices, and global climate change.

Guests can also play their part on land too. Twice a week, guests, under the guidance of maintenance staff, are invited to undertake hands-on physical work at the Vatukarasa Kindergarten School in Sigatoka. The current project is to upgrade the Kindergarten School infrastructure and to improve pre-school educational opportunities for local youngsters.

All in all, it's a very special and worthwhile experience that adds a whole depth to the Fijian holiday.

IHG closes the door on plastic keys

IHG Fiji Hotels (InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel, and Holiday Inn Suva) are replacing the standard plastic door keys with new, eco-friendly bamboo alternatives. This simple, but clever initiative will save approximately 20,000 plastic cards from reaching landfills each year.

“Every day we try to uncover new ways to minimise our impact on the environment and become a more responsible business operator. I am proud of the progress we are making through initiatives such as this, which invest in the protection of our oceans and community,” commented Lachlan Walker, Portfolio General Manager – IHG Hotels & Resorts, FNPF Owned Hotels.

Popular trails get a makeover

Some exciting projects were recently launched as part of the Samoa Tourism Recovery and Resilience Programme (STRR) — the Ma Tree Walk at O le Pupu Pu’e National Park in Togitogiga and upgrades to the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail at the Vailima Botanical Garden. These trails are highly popular with visitors who are keen on staying active while enjoying Samoa's unspoiled natural beauty.

"The Ma Tree and Coastal Walk at Togitogiga both offer unique experiences, with breathtaking views of the south coast and sea arches, as well as the remarkable Ma Tree, known for its expansive wall-like root structures that extend from the main trunk," stated Tauiliili Alise Stunnenberg, Chairlady of the Board of Directors.

"The Vailima Botanical Garden and Mt. Vaea Reserve are some of the most visited sites on the island—valued by tourists and locals alike, many of whom regularly climb Mt. Vaea. Given the popularity of these natural sites, their maintenance and enhancement are crucial," she continued. The improvements include the construction of new resting areas and shelters, the renovation and replacement of the lookout deck on Mt. Vaea and the Coastal Walk, a new open resting fale on Mt. Vaea, and a new bridge and viewing point at the waterfall in the Mt. Vaea Reserve. In addition, the projects included an upgrade of the tree identification signage at the Ma Tree and Coastal Walk and the installation of interpretive signage to further improve the visitor experience.

Where flying meets fine wine

As any traveller will tell you, the quality of food and beverages is a very important part of the in-flight experience! Air Tahiti Nui wears tattoos with pride

With World Tattoo Day taking place on March 21, Air Tahiti Nui is proud to share its unique livery - honoring the art, history, and culture of tattooing in French Polynesia. The word "tattoo" originates from the Tahitian word "tatau," and the airline's aircraft fuselage proudly displays markings derived from traditional Tahitian tattoos.

Launched in 2018, the livery features tattoo designs like the manta ray, whale, albatross, Tiki eye, and fishhooks, each with symbolic meanings related to wisdom, protection, freedom, prosperity, and luck. While the Tiare flower on the aircraft tail represents the warmth and hospitality of the Tahitian people. The colour palette of the cabin interiors is also inspired by the destination's unique beauty, reflecting the intensity of the ocean and lagoons, the brightness of the destination, and the freshness of the lush vegetation.

Top agents experience the wonders of Tahiti

Tahiti Tourisme, in partnership with Windstar Cruises, recently hosted a 10-day trade famil to The Islands of Tahiti for top-performing travel agents from New Zealand and Australia as part of its Tahiti Specialist programme. Flying Air Tahiti Nui with Premium Economy upgrades, the group started off visiting a range of properties on Tahiti – including Le Tahiti by Pearl Resort, Pare Lodge (a locally run guesthouse/pension), and InterContinental Resort Tahiti.

This was followed by a 6-night Windstar Cruise aboard the Star Breeze – stopping off in Moorea, Huahine, Taha'a, Raiatea, Bora Bora, and back to Tahiti. The many highlights included visits to the recently opened Cook's Bay Hotel and Niu Beach Hotel on Moorea and the luxurious Conrad Bora Bora. The agents also soaked up French Polynesian culture – visiting a pearl farm, exploring lagoons, and trying their hand at va'a (traditional canoe) rowing. What a trip! And of course a great way to learn more about the destination. Agents not yet registered for the Tahiti Specialist Programme can join at www.tahitispecialist.org/select-your-country

American Samoa

National Park of American Samoa: one of the safest to visit

Research by outdoor clothing brand KÜHL on the safest US National Parks ranks the National Park of American Samoa at number four. More than 300 million Americans visited the 63 National Parks in 2023. The research said this popularity also comes hand in hand with the possible risks involved.

The National Park of American Samoa encompasses the four islands of the Territory: Tutuila, Ofu, Olosega, and Ta’u. On average, fewer than 20,000 people visit the national park each year, and those low numbers help keep things manageable and safe for those who make the journey. No search and rescue mission has been needed since 2013, and no fatalities have been recorded since 2007.

American Samoa U.S. Naval and World War II history brochure

Talofa connects Tonga

Visitors to American Samoa interested in the Territory's U.S. naval history can explore some of the island's World War II sites and learn about the significant role Naval Station Tutuila played during the war effort. To help tell the naval story, the American Samoa Visitors Bureau has reproduced its popular American Samoa U.S. Naval and World War II History brochure. American Samoa's U.S. Naval and World War II connection began in the late 1800s and spanned over half of the 1900s, lasting nearly 90 years.

The brochure provides a timeline of critical events, such as when the first U.S. Naval Commander arrived on the island in 1872; a Japanese submarine surfacing and firing shells at the naval station four days after the attack on Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, in January 1942; to the U.S. Navy ending its administration of American Samoa in 1951. Visitors can pick up a copy of the brochure from the ASVB office in Fagatogo.

Hawaiian adds summer flights to Pago Pago

Hawaiian Airlines is adding a third weekly service from Honolulu to Pago Pago from May 22 to September 4, 2024, to cater to the North American summer demand. This additional service will be on Wednesdays, departing HNL at 4pm and arriving at PPG at 9:30pm. The return flight departs PPG at 11pm and arrives in HNL at 7:30am. The regular Monday and Thursday flights remain unchanged. Hawaiian operates A330 aircraft on the route.

Samoan carrier Talofa Airways is operating direct flights from American Samoa to Tonga. The services started in November with two flights a week, one from Pago Pago (PPG) to Tongatapu (TBU) and one from PPG to Vava’u (VAV). The PPG/TBU services depart on Thursdays, and the PPG/VAV flight departs on Mondays. Talofa Airways operates a fleet of two seven-seater and one nine-seater Aero Commander aircraft. All flights originate from Samoa (APW) to PPG and then on to Tonga. For bookings and further information, visit www.talofaairways.com.

Flag day: 124-year milestone

If you visit American Samoa in mid-April, check out the celebrations for Flag Day, a special day in the Territory's history. April 17, 2024, marks 124 years since this day in 1900, when the Deed of Cession was signed by the chiefs of Tutuila and Aunu'u, ceding the eastern Samoa Islands to the United States of America. The occasion is marked annually with Flag Day celebrations, where locals celebrate with invited dignitaries from around the Pacific and the U.S. Activities include the Trooping of the Colour Guard, Fautasi (longboat) racing, parades, performances by selected village groups, and presentations. For information on this year’s celebration, visit www.americansamoa.gov.
