A Year of Triumphs and Challenges
Looking back at 2024, you could say the Pacific Islands have experienced their share of ups and downs. While impressive visitor numbers have been reported from islands such as Fiji and Tahiti, political upheaval and airline issues have impacted New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
But if there’s one thing we know, it’s that the travel industry is resilient as we’ve seen by Solomon Airlines picking up routes to Vanuatu. And, with all things going to plan, travel to New Caledonia is set to resume in 2025 — something we’re eagerly anticipating.
In this issue, we close the year by featuring American Samoa — a genuine off-the-beaten-track destination designed for adventurers. The National Parks here are considered some of the finest in the entire American network, making it heaven for hikers. The fishing is worldclass, the scuba diving exceptional, and the islands are steeped in cultural history and fascinating (sometimes spooky) legends! Yes, it’s a connecting flight from Samoa, but at about 35 minutes, it’s hardly taxing.
As always, we share the latest news and updates from across the region. In the meantime, we wish our readers, supporters, and suppliers all the very best for Christmas and the New Year.

Exploring the Manu’a Islands
Where Legends, History, and Adventure Converge
Venture to the Manu’a Islands, where myth and nature blend into a realm of beauty and cultural depth.
According to Samoan legend, the god Tagaloa created the islands from a great rock he divided into pieces, forming Savai’i, Upolu, Tonga, Fiji, and, most sacred of all, the Manu’a Islands - a land destined for kings.
Today, the Manu’a Islands remain a living tapestry of ancient lore, where the sacred Tui Manu’a lineage, believed to descend from the gods, reminds visitors that these islands were truly born of legend.
More and more travellers are looking for experiences in less explored places, so islands like those in American Samoa's Manu'a Group will likely become increasingly popular. Many of today's travellers are seeking eco-friendly and adventurous trips to destinations that are still undeveloped and authentic, where few have travelled before.
The Manu'a Island Group is a destination that truly ticks this box. Located 100 kilometres east of Tutuila, the Manu'a Group includes the volcanic islands of Ofu and Olosega (joined by a bridge) and Ta'u. They are sparsely populated, with each village home to only a few hundred people.
The National Park of American Samoa, which spans parts of Tutuila, Ofu, and Ta'u, includes the southeastern half of Ta'u. Within the park lies American Samoa's tallest peak, Lata Mountain (966 metres), which overlooks the rainforest and steep cliffs. On Ofu, the national park area features stunning sandy beaches and coral reefs, framed by a dramatic mountain backdrop.
Beyond the breathtaking scenery lies a place rich in culture, history, and legend. Historically, Manu'a was considered the ruling centre of a vast Polynesian empire that included Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji. The traditional capital is the village of Ta'ū, and the islands are deeply rooted in Samoan oral tradition. The Tui Manu'a (supreme chief) was once a prestigious title, with the first Tui Manu'a believed to be a direct descendant of Tagaloa, the Samoan supreme god.
A Trio of Islands With Unique Flavours
Just a 30-minute flight from Tutuila, the Manu’a Islands—Ofu, Olosega, and Ta’u—offer diverse landscapes and deep-rooted traditions.
Although under American Samoa’s jurisdiction, these islands preserve a distinct cultural essence that feels worlds away from modern life.
Ta’u Island: Big Momma Adventure and the Valley of Giants
Ta’u Island, a sanctuary for eco-tourism, draws explorers to marvel at “Big Momma” (scientifically called Porites), the world’s largest single known coral head, located in the underwater Valley of Giants.
This extraordinary underwater landscape, safeguarded by the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa, offers a glimpse into the Pacific’s healthiest coral ecosystem, a living monument over 500 years old.
Big Momma measures 12.8 metres across, 6.4 metres in height, and spans 41.1 metres in circumference. Teeming with marine life, this vibrant coral attracts fish schools and sea turtles, all thriving amidst dazzling shades of blue and green.
The Valley of Giants, where Big Momma resides alongside other coral giants, captivates divers and snorkelers with its untouched beauty—a paradise that feels worlds away.
The American Samoa Visitors Bureau recently launched a pilot, “Big Momma Adventure,” making it possible for locals and visitors to dive into this underwater wonder guided by local experts.
With the success of this pilot, plans are underway to make this unique experience a regular feature, blending conservation with eco-tourism that benefits the local community.
Ofu Island: Mount Tumu – A Hike Above the Clouds
For those seeking land-based thrills, Ofu’s Mount Tumu offers a scenic 494-metre climb to its summit, a three-hour round trip.
Starting from Ofu Harbor, the journey unfolds through dense forests and rugged trails. With increasing elevation, the path narrows, requiring determination and a final rope-assisted climb to reach the peak.
Along the way, hikers might spot coconut crabs and birds or witness native fruit bats soaring through the canopy. The summit reveals a panorama of Ofu and Olosega Island’s lush landscape and Ta’u Island to the east, a reward that feels as mystical as it is awe-inspiring.
Few venture to the top, making the experience even more special - a place where legends blend with sweeping views, proving that the toughest climbs often lead to the most memorable vistas.
Haunted Ofu Beach: Ghostly Legends of To’aga
To’aga Beach on Ofu is steeped in ghostly lore.
Locals believe aitu, or spirits, gather here at high noon and night, adding a supernatural edge to its pristine and serene shoreline.
During World War II, tales emerged of unexplained noises, apparitions, and ghostly figures at a U.S. Naval dispensary on the island that were officially recorded in naval records.
Even today, many locals avoid To’aga Beach during certain hours, considering it a gathering place for spirits—a belief deeply woven into Samoan culture.
Olosega Island: An Untamed Island Paradise
For adventurers yearning for a place unmarked by modernity, Olosega Island offers rugged landscapes and unspoiled beauty.
Linked to Ofu by a narrow bridge, Olosega is a realm of dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and unmarked trails.
Here, time seems to stand still, with daily life unfolding at nature’s pace and the island’s rhythms of fishing and tradition.
Olosega bears the marks of nature’s power, with remnants of the village of Sili, destroyed by a hurricane in 1915, still visible.
This island is not a typical vacation spot; rather, it’s a destination for those who embrace the raw and beautiful, finding adventure in the unknown and immersing themselves in the island’s timeless spirit.

Architects Eric Raffis and Nelly Gay have transformed the space to immerse guests in a modern Polynesian retreat that blends local materials with contemporary design. Tahiti's Largest Agent Incentive Launches as Numbers Grow
Tahiti Tourisme unveiled its largest ever incentive for New Zealand travel agents at October's Tahiti Roadshow in Auckland. Caroline Brunel, Director for Australia-New Zealand at Tahiti Tourisme said the initiative aligns with efforts to position Tahiti as a year-round destination. "We're emphasising accessibility, showcasing options beyond five-star overwater bungalows to include guesthouses, yacht charters, and holiday rentals. This opens the destination to a wider range of clients," she explained.
As part of the incentive, four Kiwi agents will win a trip for two to Tahiti. To qualify, agents must log eligible bookings through the Tahiti Specialist Programme between 14 October and 31 December 2024. Qualifying bookings include hotels, guesthouses, and cruises with a minimum seven-day itinerary. Bonus points are awarded for travel during the low season (1 November 2024 to 31 March 2025) and for bookings valued over $30,000.
The incentive also aims to capitalise on the steady growth of Kiwi visitors to French Polynesia. From January to August 2024, the destination experienced a 14.5% year-on-year rise in arrivals from New Zealand, now its third-largest market after the USA and France. Direct flights from Auckland via Air Tahiti Nui and Air New Zealand have also helped drive growth which is another positive for the destination.
Marquesan Culture Comes Alive at Hilton Tahiti

Kiwi Agents Soak Up Final Famil Of The Year
Tahiti Tourisme, in partnership with Air New Zealand, hosted five New Zealand travel agents on an unforgettable eight-day trade famil to The Islands of Tahiti as part of the Certified Tahiti Specialist programme.
The group, joined by Tahiti Tourisme Trade Manager Rita Mardirossian and Air New Zealand Representative Amber Graham, explored the islands’ breathtaking beauty, rich culture, and luxury accommodations. The famil kicked off with a smooth five-hour flight from Auckland to Tahiti, setting the tone for an extraordinary journey.
Highlights included Papeete’s famous roulottes (food trucks), a thrilling 4x4 tour through Moorea’s pineapple plantations, and a cultural lagoon experience in Bora Bora, where the group swam with rays and sharks before enjoying lunch on a private motu. They also toured prestigious properties such as Le Tahiti by Pearl Resorts, Te Moana Resort, Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort, and the newly opened Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa. Kiwi agents to participate were: Sandy Leggett - House of Travel Howick, Kali Abbott - House of Travel Prestons, Diana Lintang - Flight Centre Silverdale, Renee Claasen - Flight Centre Chartwell and Leena Bhikharidas - Aspire Travel Group.

Discover Fakarava (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) by e-bike, or snorkel the coral pinnacles of Pufana. Receive a traditional welcome on Atuona, Hiva Oa, or take a scenic drive up the Taipivai Valley on Nuku Hiva – both in the Marquesas Islands. A Vision Realised: The Garners at Crown Beach
In 2013, Rondo Perkins “Dad,” envisioned Dave and Bobbie Garner taking over Crown Beach Resort & Spa to preserve its legacy. Fast forward to 2023, the Garners finally fulfilled Rondo’s vision, moving to Rarotonga and embracing their roles at Crown Beach. Their journey hasn’t been without challenges -navigating the loss of both Julie “Mom” and Rondo, as well as the global pandemic - but their resilience has only strengthened their commitment to excellence.
Blending authenticity with luxury, Dave and Bobbie are dedicated to making Crown Beach one of Rarotonga’s most elegant resorts. With decades of management experience and a deep respect for Cook Islands culture, the family is focused on creating a meaningful connection with the local community. Get a Taste of Tonga
Sampling local cuisine is all part of the travel experience, and in Tonga, visitors will have plenty of local dishes to choose from. Here are a few to get you started:
Ota’ika
Ota’ika is a traditional Polynesian dish, cherished as Tonga's national dish and a staple across the Pacific. It features fresh fish marinated in lime juice, blended with coconut milk, and diced vegetables for a refreshing taste of the islands.
Kapisi Pulu
Kapisi Pulu combines canned corned beef, cabbage, tomatoes, and onions with rich coconut cream. The mixture is wrapped in banana leaves and roasted, offering a comforting and authentic taste of Tongan cuisine.
Lu Pulu
Lu Pulu follows a similar recipe to Kapisi Pulu but uses taro leaves for wrapping. After baking, this dish is typically served hot alongside rice or yams.
Talamahu Market
Located in downtown Nuku'alofa, Talamahu Market is Tonga’s largest and liveliest marketplace, offering a vibrant blend of fresh produce, handicrafts, and local culture. Visitors can explore an impressive selection of tropical fruits like mangoes, papayas, and pineapples, alongside root vegetables such as taro, yams, and cassava. The fish section offers freshly caught seafood, including tuna and mahi-mahi. The market is also a great place to pick up traditional Tongan crafts. Find woven baskets, mats, and hats made from pandanus leaves, tapa cloth featuring unique patterns, wooden carvings, and traditional clothing.
Tonga’s historical treasures
Tonga’s 3,000-year history comes to life through its remarkable ancient monuments, offering a glimpse into the ingenuity and traditions of this Pacific Island kingdom.
Ha'amonga ‘a Maui
Known as “Tonga’s Stonehenge,” the Ha'amonga ‘a Maui is a 13th-century trilithon on Tongatapu island. Built by King Tu'itātui to honour his sons, the structure comprises three massive coral limestone slabs, each weighing 30-40 tons. A V-shaped mark on the lintel may align with solstices, hinting at astronomical significance, though this remains debated. Nearby, the ‘Esi Maka Faakinanga stone throne adds further intrigue.
Royal Palace, Nuku'alofa
Tonga’s Royal Palace, constructed in 1867, serves as the official residence of the Tongan monarchy. Its colonial and Tongan architectural fusion, light pink exterior, and historical artefacts, including traditional tapa cloth, make it a cultural highlight. While interiors remain private, guided garden tours offer insight into Tongan history.
Tongan Culture Insights
Tongan culture is deeply rooted in its Polynesian heritage, with elements of Melanesian influence, creating a society centred on family, community, and respect for tradition. Four core values shape daily life: Fefaka'apa'apa'aki (mutual respect), Feveitokai'aki (sharing and cooperation), Lototoo (humility), and Tauhi vaha'a (loyalty). These principles guide social interactions and reinforce communal living.
Artistic traditions thrive through tapa cloth making, weaving, and intricate wood carvings, while traditional dances like the lakalaka celebrate storytelling and history with grace. Christianity also plays a significant role, influencing customs and ceremonies, with church activities being an integral part of life. Despite modernisation, Tongans remain deeply connected to their cultural roots, upholding a lifestyle that values hospitality, family bonds, and reverence for ancestors.
Experience the magic of Tonga and create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you are seeking adventure, relaxation, or meaningful interactions, Tonga offers it all. Experience the warmth of the islands and create memories that will last a lifetime.
