Noumea

By Fran McDermott

Exploring New Caledonia’s cosmopolitan capital

It's always fun heading away with a group of friends and leaving the responsibilities of home far behind - for a few days at least! Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to go on some fantastic trips with friends Queenstown and Fiji a couple of our regular destinations. But this time we were looking forward to going somewhere a little bit different – the vibrant French Pacific city of Noumea in beautiful New Caledonia!

Le Merdien Resort

Le Merdien Resort

A touch of France before you arrive Our carrier was Aircalin, the international airline of New Caledonia, and what a wonderful experience they offer. Step onboard and immediately you’re immersed in a French experience. Cabin crew greet you with a friendly 'bonjour', flight announcements are in French and English. It’s fantastic. They even have a handy app that you can download onto your tablet, so you can view the in-flight entertainment via the aircraft’s WiFi. The flight up to Noumea is quick. At two hours and 20 minutes you’ve barely got time to squeeze in a movie and a few glasses of fine French champagne. And if you’d like to splash out, Aircalin also offer a business class option - more space and more goodies like a delicious three course meal and your own entertainment tablet. We were lucky enough to experience this which also meant we were first off the plane, our bags were first off the plane and we were through customs and seated in our rental car within 15 minutes of landing. The Tontuta airport is a pleasant experince, recently rebuilt with a fresh clean feeling and moving through was seamless and fast. A leisurely and scenic drive to Noumea is only 50 kms away. There are coach transfer options but car rentals are convenient and affordable. New Caledonia offers some great self drive explorations for tourists. Although you’re in New Caledonia before you know it, it really does seem like a world away from home – well, at least in a tropical South Pacific island version of France, and that’s a huge part of the appeal. Sure you can go on a great ladies trip to the usual places but the magical French Pacific mix of Noumea will give your getaway that extra bit of zing. With three nights to enjoy, the cosmopolitan capital of Noumea was our playground.

Where to stay? Noumea is packed with accommodation options. From high end international resorts to budget friendly self-contained apartments, it’s very easy to find a choice to suit your needs. Le Merdien Beachfront Resort was our port of call. Sitting at the far end of Anse Vata Beach, Le Meridien has one of Noumea’s top locations. Step outside and you’re poolside, take a few more steps and you’re swimming in crystal clear waters or dining at the beachside La Fare. The resort has recently undergone a renovation and the rooms are modern, stylish and come with every comfort you could ask for. The restaurant and bars offer plenty of places for a you to wind down – try a lychee infused champagne cocktail from Latitude 22, and there is always a good coffee available, be it café au lait or an expresso! The service is impeccable and surroundings lush and the beds are supposedly the most comfortable in Noumea, they were pretty good! Everything about Le Meridien Noumea is 5 star Luxury, we all deserve it!

L’Entrecote 360, the revolving restaurant at the top of the Ramada Plaza

Chateau Royal is another fine accommodation choice, perfect for a busier group looking for an apartment style option. If you want beach time, you couldn’t get much closer to the sand. Simply stroll down, lay down a towel and you’re set. If you want some great dining and entertainment under one roof, you couldn’t get much better. You’ll love the cuisine at La Pirogue and for some evening action, check out the live music at Le Deck Bar. Another bonus of staying at Le Meridien and Chateau Royal is the short walk to the main strip of restaurants along Anse Vata Beach or a short taxi to Citron Bay.

Viva la food To say the French love their food is an understatement. The celebration and of course the consumption of food goes hand in hand with the French way of life, and luckily for us, these fine traditions have found their way halfway round the world to New Caledonia.

Make for the markets For the city's freshest produce and seafood, all roads lead to the Municipal Market next to the water at Port Moselle. At 4.30 each morning, local producers set up their stalls with locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs. Which is perfect if your girls trip comes with a budget – or you’d rather spend your ‘eating out’ money on shoes or handbags. Simply pop in and grab some supplies and you can whip up all sorts of goodies yourself.

Supermarche shopping aisles of fun No visit to Noumea should go without a visit to the supermarche (supermarket). Here you'll wander the aisles and find shelves fully stocked with all sorts of imported goodies - fine chocolates, mouthwatering cheeses, pates, crackers, buttery biscuits all the way to tinned vegetables. You name it, the supermarche will have the French version, including a bunch of weird and wonderful things like frozen frogs legs! Last but certainly not least there's a massive selection of imported wines from France’s wine growing regions. Prices begin at NZ$10-NZ$12. If you’d prefer to stick to something from home, you’ll also find Kiwi wines on the shelves. We stumbled on an Alan Scott Sauvignon Blanc for about NZ$12 – what a bargain.

Dining your way around the bays A lot of the tourist accommodation is dotted around Citron Bay and Anse Vata, and it's here you'll find the biggest choice of cafes, restaurants and bars. Promenade rue Laroque is the main road that hugs the coast between the two hot spots. It actually feels a bit like Auckland's Mission Bay with the beach on one side and the restaurants, bars and shops on the other. We had the pleasure of dining at L’Astrolabe, a lovely restaurant that looks out across Citron Bay. Needless to say, the French cuisine was first class and the service was relaxed but very polished. The seafood came highly recommended – so we ordered a seafood platter and were served a large plate laden with mahi mahi, mussels, prawns and other delicacies, plus shredded cabbage with a tasty marinade. Delish!

There is always time for some serious pampering when you are away from home. Deep Nature Spa at Le Meridien Noumea is simply stunning. The harmonious and tranquil surroundings will wisk you away into a very relaxed state from the moment you enter the spa. They have a wide range of treatments using world famous Algotherm products, and a beachfront relaxation area with indoor and outdoor jacuzzis, saunas and fitness centres. Simply kick back and spend a morning, afternoon or whole day as you wish! The professional and caring staff will cater to your every need, you wont want to leave.

Another special place to dine while in Noumea is L’Entrecote 360, the revolving restaurant at the top of the Ramada Plaza and suites. The views are stunning as you can imagine and it takes about 45 minutes for the restaurant to do a complete 360 so you have plenty of time to take in the view from every angle. They serve succelent steak in a special secret sauce, or try tuna and fresh salad with pommes frites. Its something well worth experiencing while in Noumea, quite an attraction. You’d need weeks to experience all the cuisine Noumea has to offer. Burgers, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Indian, Tahitian, steak houses, Spanish tapas and seafood – it’s all there, its all very high quality, and its all at very resaonable prices, so make the most of it while you can. And don’t forget about the patisserie and bakeries with all their lovely treats. In saying that, there is also nothing wrong with loading up on french bread, cheese, nibbles and wine from the local store and sitting on your deck taking in the view, warmth and atmoshpere of the evening.

Girl time means spa time It has to be said that the French do spas exceptionally well and you’ll certainly find plenty of good ones in Noumea. This time we had the pleasure of experiencing Spa Aquatonic at Chateau Royal – a wellness centre that’s famous for its 300 m2 multi-therapy indoor pool. Set between 32 to 34C (the experts say this is the ideal temperature), it comes with 12 different zones with geysers, massage and swan neck jets, corridors for swimming or walking against the current, hot baths and submerged deck chairs over looking Anse Vata beach. They even have aqua bikes and an aqua gym. You can make this experience as active or relaxing as you wish - we opted for relaxing. The spa also offers a huge variety of traditional treatments and is a special and unique experience and so much fun to do with a group of friends. What a great way to spend the afternoon. We chatted and floated away, wishing we could do this every day, its got to be good for your health and wellbeing, there’s no doubt !

Shopping in style with Arc en Ciel In New Caledonia you’ll find all the mainstream brands and plenty you’ve never heard of - you just have to know where to look! For us the answer was a private shopping mall trip with local tour company Arc en Ciel. Our personal guide drove us to a selection of Noumea’s shopping hotspots, some mainstream and some a little more out of the way. The highlight was Kenu-In Mall in Dumbea which had a great selection of outlets and duty free stores. There were definitely some bargains to be had and I did plenty of stocking up for the kids upcoming birthdays. The shopping tour is also very flexible and can be tailored to meet any group’s tastes. We broke up the shopping with a morning tea of freshly baked croissants and coffee at a cute little café. Considering most ladies trips are fairly quick, the cost in taking a shopping tour is worth the time you save. If you’re happy to go solo, take a walk along Rue de Sébastopol. Here you’ll find the high-end French brands elegantly sitting side by side - L’Occitane, Etam, Petit Bateau, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Dior, Chanel, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Yves Rocher and Aubade and many more. Just remember to pack light, so you’ve got a bit of spare room in your suitcase.

So close. So easy. So good. As the destination for a ladies trip, New Caledonia it really does tick all the boxes. Beaches, spas, restaurants, bars and don’t forget the shopping - what more could a girl ask for!

Norfolk Island The small island with a world of possibilities.

Norfolk Island is stunningly beautiful. Rolling green countryside, lush bush valleys, sheer cliffs that drop into a cobalt blue ocean, manicured gardens and 30 odd kilometres of coastline make it a photographer’s delight. Think Auckland’s Waiheke Island covered in kentia palms and pine trees.

Family fun at Emily Bay © Norfolk Island Tourism

For an island of this size, it would be easy to assume there ‘wasn’t all that much to do.’ However anyone who’s ever stepped foot on Norfolk Island knows there is more than enough to keep even the most active of travellers occupied. In fact, the most common complaint is that visitors run out of time to do and see everything on offer. Just when they think they’ve ‘done’ it all, something else pops up to surprise and delight them. So where do you start?

A good spot for sport. The islands sporting clubs and associations also have a regular schedule of events throughout the year. In January the Norfolk Ocean Challenge attracts outrigger crews from all over the Pacific. And even if you’re not planning on competing, the racing is an exciting spectacle with contests ranging from a complete circuit of the island to shorter sprints in the bay.

People often ask what the best time to visit is, but the moderate, sub-tropical climate and expansive calendar of events makes this a challenge. The best way to decide when to go to Norfolk Island is to consider what’s on and what appeals most to your interests as a traveller.

For a slightly slower pace, lawn bowls competitions begin in February and continue throughout the year. The best known and longest running event is the Bounty Bowls in May. And like most bowling clubs around Australasia, they’re also a great place to have a yarn with the locals.

Take a walk through history

Golfers and tennis players can also enjoy some great competition. The Hardy’s Pro-Am Golf event hosts a full field of players every August and the Veteran’s Tennis in April is very popular. Other sporting carnivals include 3D archery, clay target shooting and squash; but if you’re just after a casual game of golf, tennis or squash, then you will be made more than welcome.

With the extensive world heritage listed colonial settlement of Kingston, Norfolk Island attracts many history lovers. In addition to the beautiful limestone Georgian buildings with their ghosts of convicts, guards and British expatriates, modern Norfolk Island has its roots in the notorious Mutiny on the Bounty. Almost a third of the population are direct descendants of the mutineers and their Polynesian wives, and still speak the language that evolved on Pitcairn Island in the 18th century. Intriguing convict built structures can be found all over the island, and there are a whole range of tours on offer that cover virtually every aspect of colonial life including a heritage research centre, museum tours, iPod tours, coach tours and a cemetery walking tour.

Time for island exploration If adventure and discovery are more to your liking there is plenty on offer. Even though Norfolk Island has a lovely sub-tropical climate (it sits at about the same latitude as Byron Bay), enjoying water sports like fishing, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking and surfing is best during the warmer months. The magnificent lagoon of Emily Bay and the crystal clear waters abounding with corals and marine life are so accessible. And in the cooler months, hiking the extensive network of trails through the national park and numerous nature reserves is a great way to see the splendors of the island's unique flora and birdlife and breathtaking coastal and forest vistas.

Get your groove on Norfolk Island – a haven for music lovers? You bet. Simply take your pick from the popular Country Music festival in May which showcases top performers from both sides of the Tasman. ‘Christmas in July’ will brighten up your winter or you can groove to the tunes at the Norfolk Island Jazz Festival in December – another event that brings in top performers from New Zealand and Australia. Norfolk is also well-known for the local music at its clubs, resorts and restaurants. The Norfolk locals are a very talented bunch, so catching the local bands in full swing is a must do.

12 islandtime March/April 2016

Fun for everyone. Norfolk Island is a destination that caters for a wide range of travellers – families, singles and groups. Those travelling with groups of friends or family know some will want to shop, others play golf while the rest potter around galleries or have a relaxing massage. The good news is that is all possible. There is a great range of tours and activities, and you’ll be dazzled by the smorgasbord presented. You can learn about the Norfolk culture and language, visit private gardens and art studios, and if you’re bird watching you may even see the rare green parrot. You can trek one of the outer islands, go deep sea fishing and much more. If you’re after a spot of retail therapy, the local shops have enough to fill your suitcase. There's locally made jewellery, beachwear, artwork, fashion, woven hats and bags, imported shoes, cosmetics and even Lego.

From paddock to plate. When it comes to food, being self-sustainable is a necessity on Norfolk Island. Here they practice ‘food metres’ not food miles with cafes and restaurants offering quality local, seasonal food all picked and served to you on the same day. On offer is boutique food industries such as goat’s cheese and milk, Norfolk blue beef, Christian’s brother’s cheeses and honey, local made liqueurs, and not forgetting the unique and distinctively Pacific blend of eighteenth-century English recipes inherited from the first European settlers of Norfolk and their Tahitian wives. Try delicious variations of recipes using bananas such as savory fritters for fish or meat, banana dumplings (known in the local island language as mudda) or marinated fresh kingfish in lemon and coconut milk. Regardless of your taste, you’re guaranteed to find something to tempt you.

Book in Bounty Day If the Bounty heritage of Norfolk Island fascinates you then think about planning your trip in early June or late November to take in Bounty Day or Thanksgiving. On 8 June, the Bounty descendants celebrate the anniversary of the arrival of their Pitcairn Island forebears after a grueling month-long sea journey across the Pacific. This is Bounty Day when the events of the Pitcairners’ first day on Norfolk are re-enacted in period costume culminating in a huge community picnic held in the compound next to the ruins of the pentagonal prison.

Taste Norfolk In the last week of November, you can enjoy the culinary delights of Taste Norfolk Food Festival, which includes Thanksgiving Day, a tradition introduced by American whalers in the 1960s. Festival guests enjoy this unique cultural experience as well as magnificent meals prepared by local chefs from some of the many restaurants and cafes dotted around the island; cooking demonstrations, and a food market that zings with flavours both traditional and multicultural. Norfolk Island really is an island holiday destination with so much more to offer, but if you really want a true Norfolk experience, plan to stay a while. There is so much to do, you need a few days to put your feet up and enjoy everything your accommodation has to offer. With more than 60 properties to choose from, you are sure to find a place that ticks all the right boxes.

Check out the calendar of events on www.norfolkisland.com.au

NORFOLK NOTES Hiking

Follow the Samoan Way • Always ask villagers for permission before taking photographs, using the beach or other activities. Permission will almost certainly be granted. • Sunday is the day for church, rest and especially for quiet around the villages. Activities that are acceptable on other days, such as swimming, may not be permitted on Sunday.

Norfolk is made for bush walking both strenuous and easy going. There are 10 recognised tracks that are sign posted, well maintained and interconnected. The most popular is the Bridal Track out to Cape Cook Memorial. It is a coastal track with magnificent view. Other popular tracks include the Palmglen and Red Road tracks through dense rainforest and the Mount Pitt to Mount Bates track that offer 360 degree views over the entire island. The North island National Park HQ offers a Park Pass for $5 that has comprehensive info on the tracks, fauna and flora that you will encounter.

Kayaking Sea kayaks are available so you can enjoy the beaches and reef systems at Emily Bay in Kingston. Guides can take you around the coast but it is weather dependent.

Mountain Bikes The entire island is suitable for mountain biking and there is very little traffic on the roads. It is quite hilly so a reasonable level of fitness is required if you want to get around by bike. The local mountain biking club has just completed a new mountain biking track at Anson Bay and club members are always willing to show visitors around.

Swimming © Norfolk Island Tourism

There are beautiful swimming beaches at Kingston but if you make an effort to find some of the other less know beaches you’ll more than likely have them to yourself. Grab a picnic hamper from one of the coffee shops in town and head for your own deserted beach!

Horse Riding Silky Oak Stables on Mission Road offers horse riding for all levels. Some of the horses are the special Norfolk Island breed of Clydesdale cross. A great activity for families and groups of up to 12 people. The trails are a joy to ride.

Fishing There is fantastic rock fishing from the shore on many parts of the island and also several charter businesses to get you out on the water. Target species are trumpeter, blue cod, yellowfin tuna, walu, and trevally. There is also many sharks. Fishing trips are weather dependant so they can be postponed if the weather gods don’t oblige. The best fishing months are October to March.

Local produce all part of the plan at Sinalei In a move towards being more sustainable, Sinalei Reef Resort has made a concerted effort to maintain its idyllic South Seas paradise while offering guests the best possible culinary experience. With this in mind, local fishermen supply most of the resort’s fresh fish such as red snapper (Palu Malau), octopus (Fe’e), crayfish (Ula), and clams (Tugage). The resort has also re-designed restaurant menus, substituting imported produce, meats, and other items for local ones. And this farm and ocean to plate concept has led to new recipes that offer authentic tastes that retain their nutritional qualities and unique Pacific flavours creates. Delish!

Outrigger pool re-opens with a splash Anyone who has been to Outrigger Fiji will know of its impressive lagoon pool. This centerpiece of the resort has recently reopened after a FJD$460,000 renovation. The 900,000 litre pool, one of the largest in the South Pacific, boasts a new surface, waterline tiles, lighting to allow evening use and enhancements to the landscaping. Not even Tropical Cyclone Winston could dampen the spirits of the engineering team, hosts and management who ensured that the renovations were completed on schedule. General Manager Peter Hopgood said the pool upgrade meant the resort now has two world class pools with the renovated lagoon pool complementing the adults-only Vahavu pool precinct which has a swim-up bar and bistro. "The lagoon pool is popular with families and they love the new look," he said.

Cool creations at Hot Glass There is a growing art scene on the Coral Coast and one of those making a big splash is Hot Glass Fiji - Fiji’s one and only glass blowing studio which is located along Korotogo’s tranquil Sunset Strip. Perched on the hillside, overlooking the sea, the workshop and gallery is run by local artist, Alice Hill. Alice offers a variety of short glass blowing and sandcasting experiences for beginners as well as longer half-day courses for those keen to get a little more adventurous. Visitors are always welcome, even if it’s just to pop in and see these beautiful pieces being created. These items make fantastic gifts, plus the gallery has other cultural and traditional handicrafts on offer – such as magimagi rope, tape designs and coconut bark. A visit to Hot Glass Fiji’s studio is fast becoming an unmissable part of any visit to the Coral Coast, so make sure you put it on your list.

Tokoriki Island Pure magic in the Mamanucas. By Fran McDermott Tokoriki Island Resort is one of those rare places where all your cares simply disappear. Is it the warm Fijian sun? The flawless beach and its perfect lineup of palms? The first class bures and villas? The fine food? No, it’s all of the above and much, much more. From the moment you walk into Tokoriki Island Resort you'll feel like you’ve been transported to another world. The truth is you have. Lush deep greens mix with vibrant tropical colours against an ocean backdrop that is blessed with the bluest of blues. Indeed the setting couldn’t be any more impressive and with it comes a peace and tranquility that most people only dream of.

AWARDS TripAdvisor 2016 #1 Hotel in the South Pacific & Fiji #1 Romantic Hotel in Fiji #16 in the Top 25 hotels in the world

While this award winning resort is considered one of the best in Fiji, they’re not ones to rest on their laurels, with food a real priority.

Needless to say, one of the best reasons for choosing Tokoriki Island Resort is that it’s a real escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s a stress-free zone tailor made for busy adults. And because the resort has an adults only policy (minimum age 16 years), the quiet and calm is absolutely perfect for a romantic getaway.

Recent work has seen the addition of a new state-of-the-art kitchen. This new facility has given the talented culinary team the resources to create sumptuous South Pacific and Asian fusion cuisine. The menu changes daily for lunch and dinner, so you’ll find yourself looking forward to every meal, rather than struggling through an identical menu day after day. The extensive wine list matches the quality of the food. And a stunning new cocktail bar and lounge provide the perfect place to watch the sun go down.

The resort has also gone out of its way to keep technology at bay. Don't go searching for your big screen TV, there isn’t one. And there are no phones and no alarm clocks in the bures or villas either. The whole ‘get away from it all' vibe is refreshing and in keeping with the true spirit of the Tokoriki Island Experience. After all this it's about spending quality time together.

And the icing on the cake? Staff that are second to none. They’re warm and welcoming, but very professional at the same time. Plus you’ll probably bump into the management team of Patrice and Rob – they’ll be chatting to guests day and night and doing their utmost to ensure everything is perfect.

But if you absolutely have to go online, don’t panic, you’ll find free WiFi in the main bure!

With an experience like this, it’s no wonder people come back year after year. Like Kiwi couple Harry & Pat Tait who have visited Tokoriki Island Resort 42 times and have their 43rd visit coming up in April.

If the laid back atmosphere isn’t enough, relaxation comes in the form of Tokoriki Island’s first class spa. As you’d expect they offer a full range of treatments including numerous massage options, luxurious body wraps, manicures and pedicures. They also have an unlimited massage offer that has become so popular, the resort had to build another treatment bure just to keep up. It quite simple - you can enjoy three days of unlimited massages on any days of your choice for just FJ$370 per person (NZ $258). With a total of 10 Beachfront Pool Bures, 10 Sunset Pool Villas and 16 Beachfront Bures, the resort retains an intimate feel. And sometimes it’s the little things that you’ll appreciate – like not having to fight to get a lounger by pool. All the accommodations options are designed with privacy in mind, plus they can come with some lovely little extras. For example, guests in the Sunset Pool Villas receive complimentary daily canapés and laundry services.

That’s hard to beat, but even guests who have been more than 10 times are in for a special treat. They take part in a coconut tree planting ceremony where they’re escorted by warriors to the planting site with the team singing to them as they arrive. Then a plaque is unveiled with the guests name and their number of visits followed by champagne and more songs! It’s a very special event that leaves some in tears. Best of all, the guests have no idea this is about to happen when they are asked to come and meet in the lobby. There are over 20 guests presently featured in the returnee garden. That says it all really! For a romantic getaway or stress-free recharge, Tokoriki Island Resort has the recipe just right.

Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands welcomes an increase in visitors Newly released figures signal good news for Solomon Islands tourism, with more visitors in 2015 than the year prior. Arrivals for the period January - October 2015 show the destination is on track to arrest a downturn experienced in 2014. Official government figures released this week show a total of 17,423 international travellers visited the Solomon Islands between January and October 2015 compared to 16,951 during the same period in 2014. Australian visitors again topped the list at 46 per cent of all arrivals followed by Papua New Guinea, the United States and New Zealand respectively.

New international schedules offer same day domestic connectivity Great news for Solomon Islands-bound travellers – new Solomon Airlines flight schedules operational from 25 April 2016 have been structured to allow passengers departing on the carrier’s international services ex-Australia to Honiara same day, through-connectivity to the national carrier’s extensive domestic network. The same applies to passengers departing from domestic ports within the Solomon Islands. They can now connect directly to Brisbane and Sydney services departing from Honiara with the exception of the Wednesday Honiara-Brisbane IE 700 service. While Solomon Airlines’ domestic services does not link with the Wednesday service exHoniara to Brisbane which departs from Honiara at 7am, the return service ex-Brisbane departing at 10.15am and arriving in Honiara at 2pm does allow for timely connection into all Solomon Airlines domestic ports. www.flysolomons.com.

Unearthing Honiara’s secrets There’s a great deal more to Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, than meets the eye. This bustling city of just 60,000 people is rich in history, culture and the venue for some wonderful soft adventure experiences including white-water rafting and trekking as well as diving and snorkeling in an area so littered with WWII wrecks it is known as ‘Iron Bottom Sound’. Our Pacific is offering a fantastic seven-night package which combines culture and WWII perfectly with accommodation at the Heritage Park Hotel, a city tour, a WWII Historical tour, a dolphin and volcano experience at Savo Island and a visit to the Kakabuna Cultural Village. For more information visit www.ourpacific.co.nz.

Solomon Islands cruise strategy spells success The Solomon Islands is becoming a new and exciting destination for the international cruise market. The destination will welcome eight separate cruise visits in 2016 - a 100 per cent increase on its 2015 schedule. Vessels visiting Honiara this year include Princess Cruises Lines’ Sea Princess and Dawn Princess, Noble Caledonia’s Caledonia Sky, Silverseas Cruises’ Silver Discoverer, P&O’s Pacific Eden and Seabourn Cruise Lines’ Seabourn Odyssey. Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau CEO, Josefa ‘Jo’ Tuamoto attributed the increase to efforts by the national tourist office with government and local private sector support to turn a “huge potential into an actual reality.”

‘Rumba’ – Raro’s new Rum Bar Rum and the tropics just go together, so next time you’re in Rarotonga, make sure you pay a visit to Rumba, the islands very first Rum Bar that opened at Club Raro in January. Serving delicious cocktails, tapas and of course a fine selection of rum, the new bar brings a fresh entertainment option to the island. The best time to go? Happy hour runs from 4-6pm each night, with all day specials on the weekends. Plus they’ll be live music from local artists and DJ sets at night.

Visitor growth sets a new record The Cook Islands continues to go from strength to strength with visitor arrivals in January hitting a new record – the provisional figures showing the highest increase in a decade and a half. The increase in the January visitor arrivals was up by 24 per cent from the same period last year, the highest monthly growth record in 15 years. Cook Islands Tourism chief executive officer Halatoa Fua said the bumper increase was a positive start for the industry this year. “This growth was mainly due to bona fide visitors and tourist numbers from Australia and New Zealand.”

All day deals at The Hula Bar The Hula Bar on the beach at the Islander Hotel has become a real hot spot. Sitting straight across the road from Rarotonga Airport, the bar has a unique ‘all-day’ programme from 11am to 11pm featuring NZD3.50 beers, spirits, wines and soft drinks. The all-day offer has also seen guests popping in from other resorts, hotels and holiday homes. And there’s no need to drive there - Rarotonga’s party buses all stop at the Hula Bar enabling partygoers to dance on the sand under the stars before the final stop at Rehab Nightclub in downtown Avarua. If you’re after a fun and safe time, Hula Bar at the Islander Hotel is a top pick.

It’s also a property that’s always looking to improve what's on offer to guests. The latest changes have seen the rearrangement of their Garden Studios, so instead of having a dining table inside plus an additional one outside, there is now a lounge seating area inside and new dining table outside, plus the addition of a daybed. On top of that, Palm Grove has also replaced all the swimming pool seating (dining tables and sun loungers) as well as completely refurbishing the restaurant and bar. Nice work.

Dateline renovation running smoothly Tanoa Hotel Group is in the midst of a major renovation programme at the former International Dateline Hotel. Project manager David Hunt says all is going to plan, with the 125 room four star property expected to open in August 2016. Located on the Nuku'alofa waterfront, the hotel will also feature a large conference room for 300 delegates as well as two small meeting rooms, two dining areas and a poolside cafe. It is expected that this new international standard property will provide a further boost to Tonga's tourism. We look forward to the keeping you up-to-date with progress.

Fiji Airways plans direct flights to Vava’u Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO, Andre Viljoen has announced the airline will begin flying twice-weekly direct from Nadi to Vava’u from 2 April, 2016. “The new route offers a seamless addition to Fiji Airways’ South Pacific network, Mr Viljoen said. The Tongan culture is guided by values that are rooted in family and respect; visitors are treated more like family than tourists. This ethos is aligned with Fiji Airways mission – just as we welcome you to our home when you step on board, Tongans welcome you to their tropical paradise when you arrive.” The new flight schedule offers easy connectivity from their international gateways, with especially short connectivity for the airline’s North American travellers connecting through Nadi, Fiji. It also makes it convenient for former Vava’u residents now living in the United States to return home.

Mike Geary to represent Liku’alofa Liku’alofa Beach Resort have appointed Mike Geary from Eye 4 Travel as their New Zealand representative. Mike will be looking after all aspects of the sales and marketing for Liku’alofa Beach Resort from Monday 14 March 2016 in the New Zealand market. Mike reports that Liku’alofa Beach Resort was awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for the 4th year in a row. “There’s a fantastic group of staff there and the experience really comes from the heart“, says Mike. It’s been a busy time for Geary, who has recently picked up Yatue Resort & Spa in Fiji, The Islander Hotel in Rarotonga and Norfolk Holiday Apartments in Norfolk Island.

Niue

Top endurance athlete Nathan Fa’avae Niue’s new ambassador He may never have been there before, but top endurance athlete Nathan Fa’avae is looking forward to taking on new adventures in Niue, as the tiny nation’s ambassador for its triathlon-style Rockman Series. Nathan has climbed, biked, paddled and hiked his way through life and around the planet so far, but he’s never been to ‘The Rock’, a coral atoll in the Pacific Nation known for its friendly people, crystal clear water and endless avenues for adventure. Nelson-based Nathan will be in Niue to help and encourage kids between the ages of 7 – 14 years old for the Junior Rockman Anchor Cup taking place on April 20 to 21. This will be Niue’s inaugural fun kids triathlon, with three fun events for different age groups – 7-10 and 11-14 years old. The 7-10 year olds will compete in a 30 metre swim and 1km run. For the 11-14 year olds it is a 100 meter swim and 2km run. There will be a Niuean flair to this kids triathlon, with competitors versing one another in coconut bowling (Olo Fua Niu) and young coconut javelin throwing (Ta tika Pona Niu). Nathan will be on the island hosting training sessions leading up the event. Plus he’ll be inspiring adults to take part in the adults Rockman event in May, and he’ll get on his bike for the Round the Rock cycling challenge in June. A busy boy indeed.

Escape to Niue twice a week Kiwis looking for a winter escape can take off to Niue with Air New Zealand twice a week from April until October. Arrive in Niue three hours later on an Air New Zealand A320 departing Auckland every Tuesday and Saturday. Returning passengers depart Niue on Friday and Tuesday afternoon, arriving in Auckland the following day after crossing the International date line. “Travellers visiting Niue are met with a warm welcome, a wealth of exciting activities and events,” says Niue’s Director of Tourism, Felicity Bollen. “We are proud to offer a complete package on Island for our much-valued visitors who are looking for the best of both worlds with land and marine activities, ending your day with a cocktail by the pool.”

“The Rock’s” 80 metre Water Clarity Considered ‘The Rock’ of the Pacific because it’s a coral atoll, Niue has up 80 metres water visibility just off land. That makes the tiny island nation a standout for diving and snorkelling, especially with the average water temperature of 27 degrees. Niue

Did you know? Niue is one of the few places in the world where you are allowed to swim with whales. If you’re planning a trip to Niue and want the unforgettable experience of getting up close and personal with a Humpback whale, time your visit for July to October. Weather conditions need to co-operate and so do the whales of course, but being in the water is a truly magical experience. If you’d prefer to view the whales from solid ground, no problem, Niue has a number of dedicated viewing areas where you can see the whales putting on their show. And because the ocean drops straight down, a matter of metres from shore, sometimes you’ll see them virtually straight in front of you. A number of tour operators offer whale watching trips and the special in-water experience. It should also be noted that all in-water interactions are conducted from a distance that respects their privacy and your safety. Self-guided experiences are not allowed.
