Before a family visits Fiji, they visit you. You’re their ticket to a family holiday they will never forget, full of smiling locals, crystal clear water and tropical rain forests. So from all of us living in the happiest place on Earth, we thank you. And, after a holiday in Fiji, so will your customers.
The beauty of isolation Brexit. Refugee crises. Terrorism. Donald Trump! It’s a crazy world out there. But down here in the South Pacific we’re sitting pretty. Sure, we might feel some impact from events overseas, but chances are life will roll on.
Contents American Samoa...........................................4 Yasawa Islands, Fiji....................................... 8 Fiji........................................................................12
If anything, our fortunate isolation could reap the benefits of these issues, with more northern hemisphere visitors flying to safe and stunningly beautiful places like the Pacific Islands. We might even see more Kiwi and Aussie visitors bypassing “overseas” travel to holiday closer to home. Time will tell.

In this issue we feature American Samoa and the Yasawa Islands Group in Fiji. Both destinations are a little off the beaten track and both are sure to tempt anyone wanting peace in paradise. And, as always, we have our regular updates from across the region. We hope you enjoy the read.

American Samoa An outer island experience By Scott Lee
4 islandtime July/August 2016
As more travellers seek experiences off the beaten track, islands like the Manu’a Group in American Samoa will become more and more popular. Eco tourism and adventure travel are the buzzwords for a generation of travellers seeking new experiences in places where few have been before and the product is raw, undeveloped and genuine.
The Manu’a Islands
Tourism facilities are light on the ground but there are some well maintained hiking trails giving access to the national park.
The Manu’a Island Group, located 100 kilometres east of Tutuila, includes the volcanic islands of Ofu and Olosega (joined by a bridge) and Ta’u. They are sparsely populated - each village has only a few hundred people.
The southern coast offers the most impressive vistas with the sheer mountains plunging 966 metres to the rocky coast and reef.
The National Park of American Samoa, which is distributed across Tutuila, Ofu and Ta’u, includes the southeastern half of Ta’u.
Saua, on the eastern coast, is believed to be the landing point where the first travellers arrived from South East Asia over 3000 years ago. Most Samoans consider Saua to be the birthplace of all Polynesia and as such it is a sacred spot.
American Samoa’s tallest peak, Lata Mountain (966 metres) lies within the park and overlooks the rainforest and steep cliffs. The national park area on Ofu features sand beaches and coral reefs with a mountain backdrop.
Local guides are recommended and can be arranged at your accommodation or by simply asking a local. While there is no commercial accommodation on Ta’u, houses are available for nightly rental.
Ta’u
We stayed at Ta’u Lodge near the airport. A comfortable three-star lodge with seven bedrooms and two bathrooms, it’s airconditioned and has a huge covered outdoor dining area cooled by the sea breeze.
Ta’u is only about 10 kilometres long and five kilometres wide. A sealed concrete road runs along the northern coast between the airport at Fiti’uta and the main village of Ta’u, which has two shops.
There is a shop next door, but visitors are urged to bring everything they require, as supplies can be limited and unreliable due to the weather-dependant ferry freight service. Bookings can be made through the American Samoa Visitors Bureau.

The Islands of Ofu and Olosega These can be reached by boat from Pago Pago and Ta’u and there is a flight from Pago Pago once a week on Thursdays. A bridge joins the islands and there is a well-formed concrete road along the southern coast of both. Tourists come to experience the national parks, the scenery and beaches and to enjoy the solitude. Three small lodges offer accommodation and homestays can be arranged in the village. The ranger station is based at Fatuana Point, about two kilometres from the wharf. Local guides can be arranged and the senior ranger, Ricki, often guides groups and can organise transport to and from the trail ends. Ricki is of chiefly descent and has a title in his own right. His ancestral lands run from Va’oto Beach up to Leolo Ridge. Just off the road he will show you the island’s historic water well and the chief’s burial site going back 3000 years. Hiking trails from moderate to challenging dissect the island. All are well maintained by the villagers. The Tumu Mountain trail is recognised as the most spectacular climbing to nearly 500 metres with stunning views of the Manu’a Islands and the coral lagoons in the national park. Although it is a marine sanctuary, snorkelling gear is not available for hire on the island, so visitors must bring their own. The swimming and snorkelling on sheltered Va’oto Beach is fantastic.
Horizon Inn Our accommodation was at the Horizon Inn, the only commercial accommodation on Olosega Island. Newly built, it sits on the water’s edge overlooking the inner reef, with magnificent vistas out to Va’oto Beach and the towering peaks of Ofo Island.
© Scott Lee
They offer four beachfront rooms and a family house, and there is a new, well-appointed kitchen and dining area for guests. Horizon offer a full meal plan or guests are welcome to use the kitchen to prepare their own meals. Guests who plan to stay for a while will need to bring their own food. A shop next door supplies the villagers’ every day needs but it’s pretty basic. They do sell Valimina beer and Steinlager!
The store dog The skinny store dog had a terrible limp that disappeared as soon as he was out of public sight. I played fetch with him on the beach for an hour while waiting, only to see him limp off around the corner to the shop when a car turned up.
Weigh in for the domestic flight As the interisland planes are small, every bag and passenger has to be weighed before boarding. The scales were a set of rusty 1970s manual scales like you see at boxing weigh-ins. Samoans aren’t known for their waif-like figures but they are known for their sense of humour. Even though the assistant who was recording the weights was only two metres away from the weigh-in official, he expressed great joy in calling out the weights so loudly the whole terminal could hear. “265 pounds!” he’d chuckle. “You smuggling gold again, Sasa?” “Fatu!. You’re 280 pounds, that’s far too fat.” Raucous laughter from the crowd. And on it went for half an hour as each victim climbed the scales. I realised later it was the daily “plane is leaving” party and a great time to catch up with friends. It was a lot of fun.
The freighter trip There is no direct air link between Ta’u and Ofo, even though both have good airstrips and they are only 15 kilometres apart. Rather than backtrack through Pago Pago, we decided to chance our luck on the interisland freighter that was scheduled to sail to Ofo on her fortnightly run. At 5.30am the next day we loaded our mass of luggage onto the MV Sili in complete darkness. At 157 metres in length she is a big, seaworthy vessel licensed to carry 120 passengers plus freight. As we stood around drinking bad coffee and watching the final farewells on the dock, the aft deck was loaded with vehicles, generators, fuel drums, gas bottles and produce bound for future destinations.
© Scott Lee
Although the Sili looks like a rust-bucket. her seaworthiness certificate from the US Coastguard was up to date (I checked) and we enjoyed a two-hour cruise to Ofo Island. As we were passing Olosega Island and running down the coast to Ofo, I started to appreciate the sheer beauty of these two gems. Golden sands, virgin rainforest from peak to lagoon and crystal clear waters. The bird life was abundant. NB There is a new ferry due for introduction in August this year.
The Sunday feast One of the great things about getting off the beaten track is the chance to meet people and share in their daily lives. Samoans are particularly hospitable and welcoming, so I was thrilled to be invited to a luncheon feast after church on my last day in Pago Pago. We drove to the southwestern corner of the island through Taputimu Village as the locals were walking home from church in their Sunday finery. As we passed through the neatly kept village, we traversed a rough gravel road to a private fale on the cliff’s edge. Surf smashed on the rocky volcanic foreshore driven by the trade winds. After a swim in a sheltered natural rock pool (complete with fish), we gathered for lunch on the veranda in the cool breeze.

I was expecting a fairly simple affair so I was surprised to see the array of delicacies on offer. There before me was a veritable feast of three large coconut crabs, lobster, yellowfin tuna presented sashimi-style, fried fish, rice and vegetables from their garden. After thanking the lord for this bounty we ate in silence, enjoying the moment and each other’s company - no need for words. It was a perfect end to my American Samoan adventure.
Things to come Interisland travel will get easier when Talofa Airlines introduces a new nine-seater Commando turboprop plane later this year. The plane will service Samoa and American Samoa and the outer islands. Eventually it is hoped to connect with Tonga, which will make the round trip possible. Also in the pipeline is the Explore Cruise option. These 300-passenger vessels will offer adventure travel options in more out-of-the-way places as she runs from New Caledonia to Tahiti and return. This cruise will stop over in American Samoa’s Manu’a Islands.
Adventure travel
© Scott Lee
American Samoa is a perfect destination for adventure travel and eco tourism. With adventure comes adversity, so you have to have a sense of adventure and unlimited patience. Treat the journey as part of the adventure and roll with the punches. For example, to get from New Zealand to Ofo we flew Air New Zealand to Apia, Polynesian Airlines to Pago Pago, then boarded a small plane to Ta’u in the Manua Islands. From there we caught the local freighter to Ofo and Olosega. That’s a lot of early starts, waiting, delays and intermittent meals. The rewards, however, are substantial. The less-travelled islands are raw, pristine and unpolluted. You’ll see places few tourists visit, and meet indigenous people who are as yet unchanged by the limited visitors they do see. You’ll enjoy genuine cultural experiences, both traditional and contemporary, and meet genuine people who are generous of heart and full of love - love for their God, love for their family and in love with their way of life - happy and proud! Children too, will love the adventure. They will remember the sights, the sounds and the sheer beauty long after they have forgotten the pool and the banana boats at your typical resort.

Fiji unplugged Finding peace in the Yasawa Islands By Matt Taylor
Unlike many parts of Fiji, tourism came late to the Yasawa Islands. It wasn’t until 1987 that land-based tourism ventures were allowed to set up - a long way behind their closest neighbours in the Mamanuca Group. This slow development has probably been a blessing in disguise. It has certainly helped keep a real authenticity to the Yasawa Island experience and ensured that the islands offer a true escape. In 2016, the locals still lead a very simple life in small, remote villages, adhering to traditional customs and basically doing what they have done for generations. There are no roads, no shops and no banks. It’s all about living off the rich bounty that Mother Nature has provided them. The Yasawa Islands provide the perfect place for overseas visitors who want to unplug from the hustle and bustle back home. It’s a bit like taking a course in relaxation therapy! And, like the rest of Fiji, the islands cater to everyone from backpackers to luxury travellers to families.
In a nutshell. The 20 islands of the Yasawa Group sit off the northwestern coast of Viti Levu. They’re larger and more rugged than the Mamanucas - four of the largest islands have impressive peaks that are around 600 metres high (twice as high as Auckland’s Sky Tower). They are blessed with gorgeous white sand beaches, as good as you’ll find anywhere in Fiji. The geographical location also has another bonus, as there is generally less rainfall than in other parts of Fiji, which is all a sun-loving visitor can ask for.
8 islandtime July/August 2016
Bliss on a budget. Mantaray Island Resort. Idyllic white sand beaches, a colourful coral reef, a marine reserve right off the beach, and 40 diving sites within a 20 minute boat ride - Mantaray Island Resort is a classic Yasawa set-up. Plus it comes with dormitory bunk beds that start from a wallet-friendly NZ$30 a night! That’s true value in an amazing setting. If you feel like going more upmarket, the resort also has beach bures, jungle villas and tree bures that offer privacy and a higher level of comfort.
Pure tranquillity. Blue Lagoon Beach Resort. Another Yasawa resort where you can enjoy a five-star location at a very reasonable price is the Blue Lagoon Beach Resort. Tidy dormitory room beds start at around $25 a night, along with $75 meal plans that include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Premium and deluxe villas are also available for those happy to spend more. And of course the tranquil waters of Nacula Bay are an amazing place to let the days slip by.
Family fun. Octopus Resort. Fiji and families go together. In the Yasawa Islands it’s no different. Octopus Resort is one such property that is brilliant for children. The Kid's Club is available year-round for children three years or older. During the day there is plenty of fun, including supervised activities such as cooking lessons, face-painting, crab and treasure hunts, snorkelling adventures, story telling, coconut husking, nature walks and Fijian language games! In the evening there is more fun and games and movies in the kids’ club hut. Plus the programme is flexible, as children can simply pick and choose the activities they like best.

A baby sitter is easily arranged for children under the age of three if required for a small hourly fee. All in all, Octopus Resort provides mum, dad and the kids with a chance to relax and have tons of fun in a friendly, beachfront setting.
Pure luxury. Yasawa Island Resort and Spa. Sitting at the very top end of the Yasawa’s accommodation options is the pure luxury of Yasawa Island Resort. With just 18 traditionally thatched beachfront bures hidden among the palm trees, privacy is guaranteed. Each bure is fully airconditioned and comes with a long list of features such as an outdoor shower, an expansive deck with day beds, a separate living space, and of course, unbelievable ocean views. Guests have exclusive access to 11 private beaches, which are perfect for those romantic picnics. Another feature of the resort are guest rates that include all meals, non-alcoholic beverages, all motorised and non-motorised watersports, activities, trips and tours. The cost of diving, fishing and spa treatments is excluded. On top of that, the resort offers a truly authentic experience. Village visits are a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture, and if you’re staying at the right time of the year you might get to watch a game of village rugby.
Awesome Adventures’ big yellow catamaran, The Yasawa Flyer
In fact, one of the most popular ways to explore the Yasawa Islands is on a cruise. Captain Cook Cruises and Blue Lagoon Cruises both offer wonderful itineraries through the Yasawas, including great excursions such as village visits, guided walks and shark and manta ray diving. Passengers receive the best personal service on board and food and beverages that are second-to-none. Plus there are plenty of fun activities to take part in, and lots of opportunities to make new friends along the way.
Manta magic. There a number of essential activities to experience in the Yasawa Islands, and one of them is diving with the manta rays that congregate in the waters between Drawaqa and Naviti Islands between May and October. Many of the resorts in the Yasawas can organise a guided trip to get you face-to-face with these graceful creatures. Alternatively, you can stay at the Barefoot Manta Resort. It’s the closest property to this manta-ray rich channel and the staff are experts at putting guests in the right place at the right time.
Spectacular caves.
Cruising the Yasawa Islands.
The breathtaking Sawa-i-lau Caves are another Yawasa must-do. These limestone formations have been slowly carved out over thousands of years of wave action and are hidden away inside a little island. They are so hidden away, the legend is that a chief and his wife sheltered there after her family threatened to marry her off to a rival chief. Every day he swam to the cave to bring her food, until it was safe for them to escape together to another island.
While you'll find a huge range of accommodation in the Yasawa Islands, from budget-friendly backpacker-style accommodation with shared dormitories, through to sumptuous top-end hideaways, you’re not limited to staying on land.
The caves are also the resting place of a Fijian god, the 10-headed Ulutini. When you’re swimming in the water looking up as the sun rays peek through, the feeling is very cathedral-like and one most visitors never forget. A number of resorts offer this guided tour.

islandtime 9
Underwater wonders. Diving enthusiasts can have a field day in the Yasawa Islands. Nearly all the resorts have their own in-house diving operation and the ones that don’t can always call in an off-site operator when needed. The crystal-clear waters are characterised by swim-throughs and canyons and a substantial population of (friendly) sharks and rays. Other popular sites include the Ethel Reef wreck, where a steamship went down in the early 1900s, a winding canyon at Whiskeys Reef, and Turtle Rock, home to stingrays and sharks, and one of the best places in Fiji to see turtles.
Snorkelling with sharks. The thought of sharing the water with a shark might send a shiver up your spine, but in the Yasawas you can do so in complete safety! We’re talking white tip and black reef sharks of about 1.5 metres in length. They are, by all reports, a little shy. You might be able to spot these sharks occasionally in the shallow waters just offshore, but that’s not quite the same as being in the water with them. The diving team at Barefoot Kuata Island can take you snorkelling with the sharks. You’ll have a snorkel, mask and lifejacket and basically float just above them as they go about their own business on the reef below. As mentioned, it’s all completely safe, and fine for children, too. They will have some great stories to tell their friends when they get home!

Getting there: By sea: Awesome Adventures’ big yellow catamaran, The Yasawa Flyer, departs Denarau Marina at 8.30 every morning. The first stops are the small Mamanuca islands of South Sea Island, Beachcomber, Bounty, Treasure Island and Vomo. The fast ferry then heads north to the Yasawa Group, stopping and dropping at all the major Yasawa Islands along the way. The final drop-off is the famous Blue Lagoon and from this point, the ferry heads back to Denarau Marina to pick up people at the same places it stopped on the way up. www.awesomefiji.com.
By air: If you have the budget it’s well worth booking an air transfer via a seaplane or helicopter. Of course it’s much quicker than the ferry option, plus you get the added bonus of a spectacular scenic flight above deep-blue Fijian waters. Turtle Airways, Pacific Island Air and Island Hoppers all service the Yasawa Group. © Yasawa Island Resort

MV Reef Endeavour all ship shape Captain Cook Cruises Fiji recently completed a $2 million refit of the MV Reef Endeavour. The small ship is now out of dry dock and back on the beautiful Fijian waters hosting three, four, seven and 11-night cruises around the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands and remote northern Islands. The upgrades included a soft refurbishment of all suites, staterooms and cabins, including new pillow-tops on all the mattresses, new blinds and mirrors, and wall art by marine photographic artist Wendy Morris. All the rooms also have fresh paint, cushions, new linen and Pure Fiji Coconut amenities! In other words, it was a comprehensive refit. Public areas were also worked on. The vessel’s sun deck has a completely new carpet, charthouse, jacuzzi and windbreak glass to protect the alfresco dining area. C Deck has been fitted with new public bathrooms, and new windows have been installed in the lounge and dining rooms. The refurbishment will no doubt add to an already exceptional cruising experience.
DoubleTree in full swing After a top-to-bottom multi-million dollar renovation, DoubleTree by Hilton Fiji – Sonaisali is now two months into operation. More than 460 properties around the world are part of the fast-growing DoubleTree brand. However, this is the first in Fiji and just the sixth in Australasia. We are thrilled to open this unique and luxurious resort, and look forward to extending a warm Fijian welcome to all of our guests.” Sitting on a lush private island, the 120-room resort is still only a three-minute boat ride from the main island of Viti Levu and an easy 25-minute commute from Nadi International Airport. If you’re searching for an island-style holiday, without having to leave the main island, this is it.
Vomo on course for September re-opening Vomo Island Resort remains a hive of activity, with teams of tradesmen busy rebuilding the five-star resort. The main areas of work include the roofing, joinery, airconditioning and the main kitchen. ‘Meli’, a landscaping specialist from New Zealand, has also been working with the grounds team to transform the gardens with vibrant blooms. By all reports the grounds are flourishing. The September re-opening will also see the unveiling of two new private residences. The BeacHouse will sleep up to six people, while The Palms is a grand residence that offers the ultimate in beachfront luxury for up to eight people. We look forward to seeing the finished product later in the year.

Exciting adventures at sea Now in its third season based out of Denarau, the 18m Excitor is proving extremely popular with day-trippers wanting an exhilarating way to explore local waters. “Excitor can carry up to 55 passengers quickly (cruising at 60kph) through most local sea conditions, smoothly and safely,” says the Managing Director, Mike Wood. “She is designed and built just for the job. The open boat feeling adds another dimension, a sense of adventure, and it’s popular with all age groups.” Wood also took the opportunity to thank travel agents and consultants for their on-going business support of Excitor, especially on its daily return Cloud 9 lunch tour. The boat departs daily at 10am to Cloud 9 and returns at 4pm to Denarau. Bookings for this trip are essential, and the boat is also available for group transfers or private charters, which is a great way for agents to add value to their clients.

Radisson Blu still at the top Earlier this year TripAdvisor presented Radisson Blu Resort Fiji with the award for No. 1 Family Resort in the South Pacific. Now the resort has just been acknowledged with another award from TripAdvisor - The Excellence Award - which it has received for six consecutive years. The resort says it takes great pride in its family-friendly features, which include Fiji’s only white-water tunnel slide and four unique lagoon swimming pools, including a climate-controlled (heating and cooling) shaded family pool, a children's, a toddler’s and an adult’s only pool. The Banana Kids Club is also a huge favourite for children and it just keeps getting better! Kids can be greeted by a Fijian warrior upon their arrival and he will then guide the children to a VIP kids’ check-in, where they will receive a free Blu Banana Passport and become inducted into the Blu Banana Team. Once they have checked in and signed up, they are often given their own “Blu Banana nickname”, making their holiday experience more personal and interactive. The Blu Banana Club aims to provide families with safe and reliable child-minding services and ensure that the whole family receives the perfect holiday experience. This all helps to create life-long memories.

Fiji International is the hottest ticket in town The Fiji International is quickly gaining a reputation as the premier golf tournament in the South Pacific. This year the quality of the field is anticipated to be the best of the tournament’s short history with the European Tour coming on board as a sanctioning partner. To be played at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course from October 6-9, this is the perfect chance to see some of the best golfers from Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia in action. However, there is a lot more than just the tournament to see. From some of the best beachside hospitality to a traditional sevusevu ceremony, the Fiji International is a must. And with the world-class golf comes a stunning setting, spectacular views and a beautiful beachfront. A special Natadola “Beach Oasis” will also be set up to provide prime viewing of the par-3 4th hole, where guests can lounge in cabanas on the white sand beach, enjoy champagne and an array of tropical delights. If it all gets too hot, they can dip in the crystal waters. fijiinternational.com
Footballer becomes a global ambassador The Fijian-Australian football star Jarryd Hayne has become a global ambassador for Fiji Airways. Hayne made his name in rugby league, before making a much-publicised switch to American football, and is now playing sevens rugby for Fiji. “This is an exciting week for me,” he said recently. “I have returned to the country where half my family is from, I’m training with the best rugby team in the world, and I’ve been appointed an ambassador for Fiji’s national airline.”
Treasure Island tempts taste buds
The announcement was made ahead of the airline’s inaugural flight from Fiji to San Francisco. Fiji Airways has launched a new direct seasonal service to San Francisco to provide its key markets - including Fiji, Australia and New Zealand – with a new way to fly to North America and beyond. The launch of a new route also highlights the airline’s focus on encouraging more Americans to experience beautiful Fiji.
Providing guests with a variety of cuisine is essential for any resort, and that’s exactly what Treasure Island have achieved with their Taste of Asia experience. This exciting live cooking station within their Eluvuka Restaurant offers crisp contemporary flavours influenced by China, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand and Indonesia. Chefs use the freshest local and international ingredients combined with guests’ personal favourites to create taste sensations cooked to their own specification. The team can combine sizzling meats or the freshest seafood with fresh local and Asian vegetables and then add the spices and sauces of the guest’s choice. And of course you can complement your dinner with a perfectly matched wine from the extensive wine list and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the tropical poolside restaurant. Bliss!

Ahura taking care of Mother Nature Ahura Resorts have welcomed the arrival of an American research specialist to Malolo Island to survey the island's rare and endangered iguana population. Adam Clause, who is from the University of Georgia, is undertaking a threemonth research project based at Likuliku Lagoon Resort that will include surveying, DNA-testing and electronic tagging and releasing of iguanas. His work will also include a detailed analysis of the tropical dry forest areas that are classified as one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet. “Our aim is not only to minimise our impact on the extraordinary nature that surrounds us but also, through a range of activities, programmes and initiatives, to improve and enhance the environment for challenged species and future generations,” he said. Steve Anstey, Group General Manager, Ahura Resorts, said the resort was committed to the project. “The significant work we have done to date with the iguanas and now the launch of Adam's research project demonstrates our serious commitment.”

Turtles start life at Return to Paradise During February, some large hawksbill sea turtles paid a visit to Return to Paradise Resort. Many swam around the lagoon close to the Rock Pool Bar and for the first time in years, several turtles waddled up on the beach and laid their eggs at night! The turtles laid most of their eggs right by the beach volleyball net, so the resort roped off the laying areas to protect the eggs. Much to everyone’s amazement, 75 baby turtles hatched and started to make their way to the sea. This attracted the attention of some very hungry crabs, so the resort staff spent all night rescuing the turtles. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Natural Resources and watched by some tearful guests, the turtles have all been released and made their way to the water. “The turtles have delighted everyone at the resort this year,” says Director Ramona Su’a Pale. “We protect our precious natural environment – we have a very rich coral garden right in front of the resort and it is just wonderful to see the turtles back nesting. Watch this space next year.”

Also based at the resort is the Sales and Marketing Manager, Cecilia FrostNasau. Originally from Fiji, she has 15 years experience in tourism and hospitality, with a focus on sales, marketing, reservations and weddings. In its major markets, Taumeasina has Laura Wadsworth from Sunseeker Travel Marketing representing the resort in New Zealand, and Lillie Dahl representing the resort in Australia. It’s an exciting time for everyone involved and great news for Samoa’s tourism. We wish them every success.

Saletoga Beach Bungalows & Hotel open for business The former Hideaway Samoa Resort has undergone a major transformation to become the newly opened three-star Saletoga Beach Bungalow and Hotel. The property is the creation of Gavin and Lou Brightwell, who own and operate the existing four-star Saletoga Sands Resort & Spa. The Kiwi couple purchased Hideaway Samoa (which sits right next door to Saletoga Sands) in early 2015, and went to work with a fine renovation of the resort’s existing restaurant, conference facilities and hotel room block. They have also added new beach bungalows, a new bar, jetty and a number of other features. Please note that the beach bungalows are open, while the hotel accommodation is scheduled to open in late July. All in all, the new resort is a great addition to the Saletoga family and an excellent option for those looking for an affordable choice on the picturesque southern coast of Upolu.

Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel & Bungalows Built back in 1933, very few South Pacific properties can match the heritage of Samoa's most iconic hotel. Movie stars like Marlon Brando, William Holden and Gary Cooper have stayed there, along with a very long list of dignitaries and other important visitors to Samoa. While the hotel has undergone numerous changes since it first opened, it has always retained a sense of history. And on May 27 2016 the next chapter in the life of this truly iconic property began. On May 27 2016 Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide opened the doors to its newest resort in the Pacific – the totally renovated Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel & Bungalows. Still owned by the Grey family, the opening marks Starwood’s second property in Samoa under the Sheraton brand, which debuted last year with the launch of Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Resort. Now in the final stages of a multi-million dollar re-development, the transformation of Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel & Bungalows is nearly complete. Located in Apia, an easy 30 minute drive from Faleolo International Airport, the property sits on a prime harbourfront position, where it’s been for so many years. Inside 175 guest rooms, bungalows and suites have been renovated from top to bottom. Each one designed with space and comfort in mind. All rooms will feature Sheraton’s signature Sweet Sleeper™ bed, and staying connected will be easy with a flat screen LCD TV with cable channels, and wireless high speed internet. Guests will also enjoy complimentary wireless broadband in the lobby. Those staying in the hotel’s Club Rooms can enjoy upgraded in-room amenities and have special access to the Sheraton Club Lounge. A relaxing, upmarket space, the Club Lounge will offer complimentary breakfast, afternoon hors d’oeuvres, and a variety of beverage options. Other onsite facilities include a fresh water swimming pool and lap pool, Sheraton fitness centre, Sheraton Shine Spa, meeting and conference facilities including a 465sq m ballroom and two boardrooms and concierge service. New aviation services hold “massive potential” The Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau has described the decision by Solomon Airlines, Air Niugini and Air Vanuatu to begin a joint codeshare service between their home ports from July 1 as holding “massive potential” for Solomon Islands’ tourism aspirations. Under the agreement, the three airlines will operate four-weekly return services between Port Moresby and Honiara, and a weekly return service between Honiara and Port Vila. Josefa “Jo” Tuamoto, the Chief Executive Officer of the Bureau, says the new service holds massive potential beyond the intra-Melanesia travel aspect, as it creates a new aviation gateway to the Solomon Islands for New Zealanders flying via Vanuatu, and literally millions of Asian visitors flying via Papua New Guinea. Fat Boys Resort
“While all three airlines operate into a number of Australian cities, the opportunity this agreement holds for the region is immense when you take into account Air Niugini services into several key Asian destinations and Air Vanuatu services into New Zealand.”

Solomon Islands
Tourism numbers off to a great start Building Kiwi visitor numbers across Q1 has the Solomon Islands tourism industry hopeful that 2016 will be the year when the “Hapi Isles” comes of age as an exciting choice for Kiwis looking for a “new” South Pacific travel experience. Certainly the destination is enjoying one of its best starts to a year. Official Solomon Islands government statistics show 5037 international visitors, including 279 New Zealanders, arrived over the January-to-March period. This compares with a total of 4399 for the same period in 2015. Josefa “Jo” Tuamoto, the Chief Executive Officer of the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau, attributes the March increase in part to a high-profile Solomon Islands trade mission which visited New Zealand in early February. This couples with efforts by the bureau to get as many New Zealand travel writers into the destination as possible to bring the destination front of mind with New Zealand consumers, he said. “Add to this the efforts of local operators Our Pacific and Pack Ya Bags, both of which have begun actively selling the destination, along with Dive, Fish, Snow in recent times, Tuamoto said. “We achieved our international arrivals target of seven percent last year, and we hope to increase by nine percent in 2016. “While growth from New Zealand in 2015 was small, just 1.6 percent, we are confident our efforts and support from our local industry partners will result in increased numbers in 2016,” he said. The bureau is already planning a second New Zealand road show toward the end of the year to maintain its momentum in the market.
Stunning lagoon is growing in popularity
Dash 8 back in service
The Marovo Lagoon is accessed by air, generally from Honiara to Seghe. It is recognised as the largest saltwater lagoon in the world, being more than 100 kilometres in length. It is stunning at first sight, and is fast becoming one of the country’s most popular tourist spots. There are several guesthouses and eco lodges along its edges, all accessible by banana boat. The largest property is Uepi Island Resort, offering comfortable accommodation, and all meals daily. Uepi is a snorkellers' and divers' paradise, with spectacular sites straight off the island or only a short boat trip away. Another popular property is Wilderness Lodge located at the Gatokae end of the lagoon. They also offer simple accommodation with all meals daily, and an array of excursions including fishing, diving, snorkelling, bush walking and village visits. This destination has to be on the bucket list for the more adventurous holidaymaker!
After a three-month absence, Solomon Airlines’ Dash 8 aircraft (H4-SOL) has resumed full operations on the national carrier’s domestic services and it’s looking better than ever. The aircraft, affectionately known as Megapode, had been undergoing its heavy C-Check maintenance programme under contract with Hawker Pacific, based in Cairns, Queensland. This included a complete internal and external refit - and it’s a brand new aircraft for all intents and purposes. Gus Kraus, Solomon Airlines General Manager - Operations & Commercial, says that given so much can be done with this level of commuter aircraft in the Solomon Islands, the airline sees huge potential in opening up further ports in the Solomon Islands to a Dash 8 service. The airline is looking at possibly providing Dash 8 services to Manaoba and Lomlom, subject to those ports being commissioned and operationally approved. Megapode will also fly on the recently renewed Honiara-Auki (Malaita) service in a short time.

Tahiti
Island Insights with Hazel Ho, Travel Concierge In this issue we get the inside word on Tahiti from Auckland-based agent Hazel Ho. Hazel works for Travel Concierge and is a seasoned Tahiti traveller. What islands have you visited? Papeete, Moorea, Bora Bora and Tikehau What surprised you most about the Islands of Tahiti? It’s hard to pick a standout, but the pink sand beach by Tikehau Resort is quite amazing. I’ve never seen anything like that before! Best tip or piece of information for your clients? Many restaurants in Moorea and Bora Bora offer a free pick-up service from both the hotels in Moorea or the landing piers in Bora Bora. That means it’s really easy to experience the local restaurants on the islands. Your personal favourite activity or thing to do in Tahiti? It’s hard to choose just one activity, but my best memories were jetskiing with friends in Bora Bora. We circled the island and enjoyed the spectacular turquoise lagoon, plus we got to see manta rays. Which island would you like to visit next and why? I am keen to do a cruise in Tahiti to explore more of the island. I’d love to visit Taha'a (Vanilla Island), so I can see a vanilla plantation and taste a real "vanilla" milkshake!
Tikehau
Natural curiosities Explore Tūherahera village and the superb desert atoll’s beaches. See the impressive coral remnants along the southern coast that form a natural wall. Then travel back in time to discover the legend of Hina’s bell, which is so closely linked to this atoll.
The Pink Sand Island
A particularly fishy atoll
Located 300 kilometres from Tahiti and just 12 kilometres from Rangiroa, Tikehau and its lagoon of 26 square kilometres look very much like a natural outdoor swimming pool. Within its waters is a variety of marine life that is almost too abundant to believe.
Millions of fish live in the untouched world of Tikehau Lagoon. The volume of fish is so large that the marine adventure explorer Jacques Cousteau called it the highest concentration of fish in any lagoon in Tahiti.
In the air, visitors can admire the bird colonies of red-footed boobies, greater crested terns, blue noddies and frigate birds.
Where to stay
On land, Tūherahera is the only village on an atoll where life is peaceful and follows the rhythms of fishing, copra and religious services. Indeed, visiting Tikahau is a fabulous opportunity to indulge in the typical easygoing atmosphere of a stunning Tuamotu atoll.
Tikehau may be small, but there is still a choice of accommodation options. Simple family pensions provide a welcoming, authentic stay. Boutique guesthouses blend luxury with tradition, and resorts provide the finest of comfort within a spectacular environment.
Three good reasons to stay in Tikehau This small atoll is the definition of off-the-grid. So if you really want to get away from it all, this is the place to go.
Pure lagoon magic Tikehau’s spectacular oval-shaped lagoon is formed by a series of motu and boasts unique white and pink sand beaches. The natural pool opens at a small pass called Tuheiva. Once inside, divers have an unforgettable experience viewing some of Tahiti’s most amazing marine life, including eagle rays, schools of barracuda and tuna, grey reef sharks, marine turtles and dolphins. For those wanting downtime, the untouched beaches are paradise, as is the pure, warm emerald lagoon.

Tonga
A celebration fit for a king Tonga recently held one of its biggest annual events, The Heilala Festival, which celebrates the King of Tonga’s birthday, but also celebrates Tongan beauty, culture and values. One of the highlights of the festival was the Miss Heilala Beauty Pageant – with the winner going on to represent Tonga Miss South Pacific.
Tanoa International ahead of schedule Some welcoming news is coming out of the Tanoa Hotel Group with the announcement that the comprehensive renovation of the Tanoa International Dateline Hotel is two months ahead of schedule. The property is now open for bookings for travel from 1 November 2016. The project has seen the Tanoa Group basically rebuild the property with the replacement of all the internal structures and fittings. Along with the complete refurbishment of the guest rooms, the property will boast a new pool bar and restaurant complex, conference facilities, a gym and a new health and spa.
Kick back on the sunset coast If you’re looking for a laid back holiday spot, right on a beautiful white sand beach, the Heilala Holiday Lodge ticks the boxes. Sitting at the northwestern tip of Tongatapu, on the aptly named Sunset Coast, Heilala Holiday Lodge provides guests with a prime beachfront location, plus a huge range of activities, including some the island's best surfing. The crystal clear waters offer plenty of opportunities for snorkelling and if you happen to be there from June to September, there’s a good chance you’ll spot a humpback whale passing by. If you’re a seafood fan, you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven – bring your appetite and try their whole crayfish dish! On top of all that, you’ll be treated to some true family-style Tongan hospitality.

Big changes at Nouvata As of this May, Nouvata Parc Hotel, one of three hotels belonging to the GLP Hotel Group in New Caledonia, has changed its name, logo and identity to Nouvata. The brief to the local advertising agency was to shorten the name and create a logo which represents the history and tradition of the hotel. The hotel is now called Nouvata, which is an abbreviation of Noumea and Anse Vata, the famous bay opposite the hotel’s location. The logo symbolises the plant life, the coconut and the contours of Anse Vata Bay, and the blue colour represents the lagoon and is part of the trio of blues that make up the GLP Hotel logo and signature.

Travel trade gets a taste of New Caledonia A lucky group of New Zealand trade representatives recently discovered the many joys of New Caledonia at The Rendezvous Workshop, which was hosted by New Caledonia Tourism. The Kiwi group were among the 100 attendees who participated in the event. The programme provided the opportunity to discover local neighbourhoods, and distinct offerings including the cosmopolitan capital of Noumea, the pristine Isle of Pines, the rugged wilderness of the North, and the untouched Loyalty Island of Mare. New Caledonia Tourism’s New Zealand sales and marketing director, Caroline Brunel, said “Rendezvous has quickly become an important occasion for the destination, though equally as significant is the opportunity for wholesalers to experience our product and beauty firsthand. “These specifically designed famils provide that opportunity tenfold. Now we cannot wait for next year’s event.”

Niue
Endurance athletes loop the Rock Elite endurance athletes Nathan Fa’avae and Sophie Hart, both from New Zealand, recently circumnavigated the entire island of Niue in a two-man inflatable kayak. The journey took just under 10 hours with both water and land support. It ended with a welcoming and blessing at the Avatele Ramp with Hon. Billy Talagi, Hon. Pokotoa Sipeli, His Excellency Ross Ardern, and members of the Avatele community providing a warm arrival for the paddlers. Niue’s waters provide an excellent environment for ocean paddling in outrigger canoes, surf skis and stand-up paddle boards.
NiueKulele - Music Festival
Niue’s Rockman a wrap Serious athletes and those “just wanting to have a go” participated in Niue’s fifth annual Rockman event during May. Competitors had the option to compete in individual events, a 10km run, 30km bike and 1km swim, or a full triathlon in one day. Four-time Adventure World Racing Champion and Rockman Ambassador Nathan Fa’avae led the way, encouraging and inspiring other competitors over the four-day event. “Triathlons are always challenging and this one was no different, but cycling and swimming through a tropical paradise was a different kind of experience! The event course really highlighted the unique land and marine attractions Niue offers,” said Nathan.
Want to mix a tropical holiday with some sweet sounds? Then the four-day festival in October celebrating the ukulele is a must. There will be singing, dancing and of course ukulele music aplenty. NiueKulele is designed to showcase, celebrate and share Polynesian-style techniques with ukulele lovers everywhere. Ukulele stars from Niue, Samoa, New Zealand, the Cook Islands and our special guest stars from Hawaii Ukulele sensations Honoka and Azita (www. honokaandazita.com) will be there. Workshops, blackboard concerts, jam sessions and a gala concert will all feature in this fourday extravaganza. New Zealander Paul Jonson and Jody Kamisato (Hawaii) will be two of the guest tutors conducting workshops. Jody was the recipient of the 15th Annual Hawaii Music Award for Island Contemporary, and was nominated for two Na Hoku Hano Hano Awards, Most Promising Artists and Contemporary Album of the Year through his group, Heart & Soul. Paul is a household name among ukulele enthusiasts in New Zealand, having played at many international ukulele festivals, and he is keen to pass on his experience to any would-be performers. Our performers’ workshops will cater for all skill levels so everyone in the family can take part.
