Beachfront
bliss
When Islandtime first visited Nautilus Resort back in 2015, the property was less than a year old and very much the ‘new kid on the block’. The 4.5 star resort boasted a prime, absolute beachfront position on Muri Beach - the Cook Islands' most sought after stretch of sand. Seventeen spacious, beautifully appointed rooms provided supreme comfort. And the acclaimed restaurant served some of the island’s finest cuisine. Of course, the true test for any accommodation operator is being able to maintain high standards, day-in day-out, year after year. Roll forward to 2018 and Nautilus Resort has passed with flying colours. The quality experience starts with an easy check in, and friendly resort staff who guide you to a spacious are’, or villa. Sliding back the doors has the same impact as watching the curtain rise at the start of a big show. The entire front of the beachfront are’ opens up to reveal an infinity pool framed by palm trees and tropical foliage. On the horizon, a sliver of waves separate the blue lagoon from milky white high clouds. Beautiful. The private pool is the perfect place to start a Nautilus holiday. Simply dive straight in. And then follow it up with a stroll on the Muri Beach sand and a quick dip in the tepid waters of the lagoon. Yes, is this island life at its best. Feeling peckish? For breakfast go straight into a taste of Rarotonga with creamed rukau, or taro leaves, served with poached eggs on toasted ciabatta and Hollandaise sauce. Delish! If you feel like working off the calories, simply grab a kayak and paddle across to the islet of Ta’akoka that’s just offshore. After paddling around the island, you can haul your kayak up onto the beach and pretend you're a castaway. Well, just till you feel like getting back to the luxury at Nautlius. The eco-resort is set against a backdrop of Rarotonga’s mountainous hinterland. The accommodation offered in the resort’s 17 villas includes one and two-bedroom Beachfront Are’s and Garden Are’s, both with spacious private decks and saltwater plunge pools, and there is a 340 square-metre three-bedroom premium Beachfront Are’ designed for larger families or groups. If breakfast has worn off, try a lunch of ika mata, the Rarotongan version of raw fish salad. It is deliciously fresh and nutritious. Wash it down with a couple of bottles of Matutu Maeva Celebration Ale, the local version of an Indian Pale Ale – which is delicious, but not-quite-so nutritious. Warm afternoons can be spent lounging and relaxing by the pool, paddling an outrigger canoe, or hiring a small motorbike and taking off around Rarotonga, stopping off wherever you fancy. There are plenty of sightseeing options. Enjoy swimming in a cool glade below picturesque waterfalls, a round of golf, or an afternoon on one of Pa’s Nature Walks. A renowned local guide, Pa will teach you about local herbal medicines, before an amazing trek into the mountains, passing native trees, orchards, fields of taro and 1200-year-old chestnut trees. When it’s time to relax, Spa Nautilus is the ideal place to spend a couple of hours. The Nautilus Signature Menu includes hot stone therapy, back, face and scalp massages, body wraps, and rain showers. All the therapists have been trained in international hotel spas that specialise in treatments using Thalgo’s marine-based spa products, ie, you’ll be in very good hands. Dinner is the highlight of any evening. Naturally, the stylish beachfront restaurant focuses on fresh local ingredients and Polynesian influences wherever possible. The lamb rump is as good as you’ll find anywhere. The duck and udon noodles have a genuine taste of Japan. Vegans will also be well satisfied with dishes like coconut risotto, cooked with vegetable stock, coconut milk and seasonal vegetables. If you’re looking for laid-back beachside luxury in the Cook Islands, Nautilus Resort delivers on every level. Just as it has always done.

The whales have arrived Humpback whales migrate to Niue between June and October each year. Niue is one of the only places in the world where you can view the whales just metres from the shore. And Niue is also one of the few countries where you can swim within metres of these unmissable giants of the deep, with licensed operators offering whale watching and inwater interactions. Niue is a signatory to the Whale Sanctuary for Endangered Oceania Humpbacks, and is committed to promoting understanding of the whales and the sanctuary’s cultural and environmental significance. Therefore whale-watching is only permitted with licensed operators, so all interactions are conducted from a distance that respects the whales’ privacy and visitors’ safety. Swimming with or even just seeing these whales can literally be a life-changing experience.

Plastic bags on the way out Niue is acknowledging international plastic bag-free day this month by banning single-use plastic bags on the island. The bags will be gradually phased out over the next 12 months and replaced with reusable bags. It’s just one of Niue’s many conservation efforts as the nation aims to become more sustainable. The ban is just the first step, with many more environmental initiatives planned over the next few years. The niueisland.com website now has a page dedicated to sustainable updates to promote the initiatives.

Second proposal for heritage site Last year, UNESCO recognised Taputapuatea marae on Raiatea island as a World Heritage Site. Taputapuātea marae is at the centre of the Polynesian Triangle, a vast portion of the Pacific Ocean dotted with islands. The site, which illustrates 1000 years of mā’ohi civilisation, includes two forested valleys, a portion of lagoon and coral reef, and a strip of open ocean. At the heart of this special property is the marae complex, a political, ceremonial and funerary centre where the world of the living intersects the world of the ancestors and the gods. Some marae in the Taputapuātea complex have been restored, but the layout and most of the materials are original. It’s of outstanding significance to people throughout Polynesia as it contains symbols of their origins, connects them with ancestors and is an expression of their spirituality. Taputapuātea marae was the centre of a political alliance that brought together two regions encompassing most of Polynesia. Chiefs, warriors and priests from other islands regularly met at Taputapuātea to maintain the alliance. Building outrigger canoes and practising ocean navigation were key skills in maintaining this network. French Polynesia has now made a fresh bid to include a second site in the Marquesas Islands on the same list. The Minister of Culture, Heremoana Maamaatuaiahutapu, said the French national commission vetting the bid had accepted nine of the 43 sites initially presented. The proposal is now to go to UNESCO for consideration. A management plan is preserving the sites of memory that testify to the ancient mā’ohi civilisation, protect the marae and preserve the environment.

Setting sail for Musket Cove’s 35th regatta Cruising and racing sailors from around the Pacific and beyond are beginning to make plans to be part of the region's ultimate sailing event. Scheduled to take place from the September 7– 12, the regatta begins from the renowned Musket Cove Island Resort and Marina, located on Malolo Lailai Island amid the beautiful Mamanuca Islands. Musket’s Marina offers a range of excellent facilities including berths, deep water moorings, a general store, a laundromat and access to the resort's restaurants. With a record of 105 yachts in last years regatta, there is no doubt the fleets will be in full force for the 35th series. Whilst most yachts anchor just off the resort, berths and moorings are available for those who secure them early. The Musket Cove Resort offers special accommodation packages for those who prefer to be land based but still be amongst the exciting atmosphere. Sail by day, party by night and join the Musket Cove team in celebrating more than three decades of the regatta.
Biologist on board with Captain Cook Captain Cook Cruises prides itself on being environmentally aware, and now the company is passing on this passion to its guests. They have created a unique experience by having a dedicated marine biologist on board the Reef Endeavour on all three, four, seven and 11-night cruises. The marine biologist manages the monthly coral planting at Tivua Island, gives daily talks on reef ecology, crown of thorns starfish, sharks and Fiji culture, and leads guided snorkelling and glass bottom boat tours. As well as educating passengers on the fascinating underwater world and its marine life, the marine biologist also manages Captain Cook Cruises’ environmental initiative - the Ocean Ambassador Programme. The programme encourages staff and guests to clean up plastic waste from remote beaches visited on cruises, minimising plastic pollution in remote Fiji and helping sustain the local environment. And at the same time, educating villagers, crew and passengers and collecting valuable data about the types of waste washed up on the beaches of Fiji. That’s genuine commitment to the environment.

Resort brings water sports on board Treasure Island resort has brought its water sports operation in-house in a bid to enhance guest services, increase the range of activities available and create opportunities to expand its marine conservation programme. The new team is headed by Alex and Kane. Alex, who experienced her first dive at the age of nine, has a degree in geography and tourism management and has worked in Honduras, Thailand, Australia and Fiji. She has also done volunteer work in South Africa and Mozambique. Kane, who was born in Wales but moved to Honduras while still in his teens, was one of the world’s youngest dive masters. He has worked in various roles in the water sports industry, from scuba diving instructor to managing water sports operations to running his own boat chartering business. Alex and Kane are supported by a team of experienced diving instructors who have all worked extensively in the industry around Fiji, along with four boat captains and two more support crew. Treasure Island says it now has the largest offering of all water sports operators in Fiji, with more activities and products in the pipeline.

Super team plant for a good cause Situated on Deuba Beach along the beautiful Pacific Harbour coast, The Uprising Beach Resort is a laid-back resort that is doing its utmost to preserve the local environment. As part of an Uprising Environmental and Sustainability plan, the resort is working towards being carbon neutral by the end of this year. This has seen the planting of mangroves, with the goal to reach a minimum of 16 hectares. In late June, the resort hosted New Zealand Super Rugby team The Highlanders who were in Fiji to play The Chiefs. The Highlanders stayed at the resort for a few hours and did their bit for the environment by planting mangroves. They also got to watch the Fiji 7s team train, were given a tour of the facilities, watched some firewalking and finished off the night having a seafood platter while chatting with guests from Nudgee College who were also on a rugby tour!
Sponsor busy finalising golf plans As the opening day of the Fifth Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways rapidly approaches, excitement is growing at the prospect of seeing some of the world’s leading golfers in action from August 2-5 at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course. Professionals confirmed to compete in the event include four-time major winner and 2019 Presidents Cup International Team captain Ernie Els, eight-time winner of the Asian tour Gaganjeet Bhullar, Australian Masters of the Amateurs 2018 Micheluzzi, and former world number one, Fiji's own Vijay Singh. A strong field of other golfing professionals from around the world will join them. Gold sponsor InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa says it is also busy finalising the essential pre and post-tournament details. These include all the host events on the property, supporting local sponsors and providing the resort’s guests with all the necessary details building up towards the tournament. "InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa will continue to deliver its promise as Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways’ official accommodation provider and Fiji's leading luxury resort, to offer a multitude of experiences for its valued guests - in this case professional golfers and golfing enthusiasts alike," says Andrew Davidson, Area General Manager for Fiji and the South Pacific. The fifth staging of the world-class tournament was shaping up to be the best yet, and the people of Fiji were being encouraged to support one of their premium sporting events, Davidson said. “This is one of the best opportunities for showcasing our Fiji as an excellent golfing destination.”
Raw fish dish tops new grill menu The dining experience at the new Taki Beach Bar and Grill at Crusoe’s Retreat is focusing on serving tasty and authentic Fijian cuisine, in particular kokoda. This traditional Fijian seafood dish features cubes of fresh fish marinated in lime juice, and a house special coconut dressing applied until the fish is infused with all the delicious flavours. “Taki” means “one more” in Fijian, and the term is also used during a kava ceremony. “We felt that Taki was a very appropriate name for our new beach bar and grill at Crusoe’s,” said Scott Lee of Crusoe’s Retreat. Holidaymakers were enjoying its idyllic location right on the water’s edge and taking in the panoramic ocean views and brilliant sunsets, he said. The bar and grill also has its own traditional tandoor oven for cooking pizza. Lee recommends ordering the Wasawasa Jewels Pizza, a combination of freshly caught local seafood with garden-fresh coriander and green chilies. He said Crusoe’s Retreat was booking up quickly, but rooms were still available over the school holidays, particularly in the last week of July, when guests can enjoy a free one-hour spa treatment.

Ballroom now in step with the times The newly refurbished Captain’s Ballroom is the latest change in the continuing development of the Radisson Blu Resort Fiji. The upgraded ballroom now has the latest audio-visual and communications technology, sophisticated lighting systems and complimentary wifi connections. Yasawa resort introduces a degustation lovo Fiji’s Yasawa Island Resort & Spa says it has raised the bar on the potential of lovo oven cooking with its new Flavours of Fiji – 5 Course Degustation Lovo. “Most of the menu evolves around the earth oven lovo technique, where food is cooked underground, allowing the flavours to be enhanced by the “smoked” characteristic that comes through using this method,” says Executive Pastry Chef, Claire Styles. The five-course degustation menu has been designed by Executive Chef Brent Assam to combine traditional Fijian cooking methods as well as flavours, served with a creative and culinary twist. All the courses are designed around seasonal root crops grown on the island and the abundant stock of freshly squeezed coconut cream is a vital ingredient in each dish. Local fishermen provide a ready supply of an assortment of seafood, from reef fish, lobster and crabs to the popular yellowfin tuna.
Agents can gain first-hand experience Yasawa Island Resort & Spa has introduced a new programme for travel agents who want to familiarise themselves with the resort. The agents must be registered with the Tourism Fiji Matai agent accreditation programme. “The travel trade plays an important role in the promotion of Yasawa Island Resort & Spa, and we want to give the industry the opportunity to experience first-hand all that Yasawa has to offer,” said the Managing Director, James McCann. Agents booking inside 30 days of travel will receive a 50 percent discount on the daily tariff, including return transfers on scheduled charter flights from Nadi. Bookings outside 30 days receive a 25 percent discount. The daily tariff includes accommodation, all-day gourmet dining, non-alcoholic beverages, all scheduled activities, all non-motorised and most motorised water sports. The offers are valid year-round, subject to availability and inventory restrictions. Full details and terms and conditions are available on the Tourism Fiji Matai website.

Projects on the go at Whitsundays Autumn may see a drop in the number of visitors to the Whitsundays, but local tourism businesses are using the time to make numerous improvements and upgrades. There is a new short walk on Langford Island, and all-weather walking trails with interpretive panels should be finished soon on Border and Haslewood Islands. The upgrade of the Hill Inlet Lookout later this year will include a new platform and a circuit track, and shaded rest areas. And the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service is constructing a new viewing platform at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach. Hamilton Island is to receive $500,000 as part of the joint Federal and State Government Tourism Recovery Fund Project to construct an auditorium at Bougainvillea Marquee. Daydream Island is going on-line in September, following a major refurbishment of the resort and its conference facilities. On the mainland, the new Northerlies Beach Bar and Grill opened to positive reviews, and the adjoining resort is due to open soon. Cruise Whitsundays has new products on its 2018 list of tours, and you can now explore Hardy Reef riding underwater scooters known as Seabobs. The company can now accommodate more guests on the ReefSleep experience and added a gourmet menu. The number of new cabins and powered sites is also expanding over the coming months at the Big4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort. Our Pacific highlights islands
Visitor arrivals continue to increase
Our Pacific has released a ninenight programme highlighting the Solomon Islands’ capital city of Honiara, along with Gizo and Munda in the culturally rich Western Province.
Visitor arrivals to the Solomon Islands continued to show positive growth during April. It was the fourth month in a row that international visits showed double-digit growth. Figures released by the Solomon Islands National Statistics Office (SINSO) reveal international visits for April increased by 11.8 percent over the corresponding month in 2017. The 2250 total recorded was 237 more than the 2013 who arrived in April 2017.
The itinerary includes stays at some of the destination’s leading hotels and resorts. These include two nights in an executive suite at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara, one night at the Agnes Gateway Hotel in Munda, two nights in bungalow accommodation at Zipolo Habu Resort on Lola Island, and three nights in a bungalow at Fatboys Resort in Gizo. The Highlights of the Solomon Islands tour is valid for travel from now until December 15, but must be booked by November 30.
Dive the wrecks and reefs of Gizo Dive Adventures has released a new programme showcasing the underwater world found in and around Gizo in the Western Province.
The Statistics Office said all the major source markets showed good growth, with Australia and New Zealand again leading the way. Australian visitor arrivals climbed 13 percent from 2689 to 3038, while New Zealand’s figures increased 17 percent, from 443 to 519. Papua New Guinea figures increased from 377 to 492, an increase of 30.5 percent, while US figures grew 19 percent to 409. Interestingly, visits from Japan climbed by 40 percent, from 207 to 290. Josefa “Jo” Tuamoto, the Chief Executive of the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau, attributed the renewed interest in the destination as following on from the 75th anniversary of the Guadalcanal campaign last August. European traffic also continued to build, with the 338 total recorded representing a 48.9 percent increase over the 227 figure achieved in 2017. The April result follows the destination’s best first quarter result, with collective visitor arrivals for Q1 2018, up by 29 percent.
Just a 90-minute flight from Honiara, this “tropical treasure trove” offers a host of Second World War wrecks, offshore reefs, coral formations, plummeting walls, manta rays and an abundance of marine life. Some 250 species have been recorded in just one spot in this area off Gizo. The two-tiered option features a choice of accommodation at the Fatboys Resort and Sanbis Resort, both of which sit minutes away from some of the best diving to be found in the Pacific. The price, per person twin share, includes return flights to Gizo from Brisbane flying with Solomon Airlines, seven nights accommodation, a daily continental breakfast, 10 boat dives plus tanks, weights and a diving guide, plus a barbecue lunch or picnic on diving days.
War relics find a home A must for anyone visiting Munda in the Western Province is the Peter Joseph WWII Museum, located in the home of Alphy Barney Paulson, the man responsible for collating one of the best collections of Second World War relics in the South Pacific. This private museum, located a short drive or a 30-minute walk through rainforest, features a huge collection of US and Japanese military utensils, ammunition, machine guns, shells, crockery, helmets, shavers and knives. They were all left behind by the US and Japanese forces who took part in one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific campaign during the war. The museum is named after US Marine Peter Joseph, whose personal ID tags, known as dog tags, were one of Alphy’s first finds when he began assembling his collection in 2000. The museum is open most days, except Sundays, and Alphy charges a small admission fee.
Seek the unexplored

Weavers thread their way through history Participants at Maui’s inaugural Weaving Conference will be immersed in four days of weaving from October 17-20 as they learn skills and techniques from master weavers from throughout Hawai'i. The goal of the conference, to be held at the Kā'anapali Beach Hotel, is to preserve and perpetuate ancient Hawaiian weaving traditions. The leaders are master weaver Pohaku Kaho'ohanohano from Kahakuloa, Maui, and Gayle Miyaguchi, Kā'anapali Beach Hotel's Cultural Resource Advisor. The conference is open to weavers of all levels of ability, from beginners to advanced. Options for classes will include lauhala (hala leaves), 'ie'ie (woody vine woven into baskets), koko (knotting a net carrier) and 'upena (fish net). Kā'anapali Beach Hotel is known for its support of cultural experiences, not only for guests and employees but also for the island community. Its Hawaiian cultural centre, Hale Ho’okipa, is staffed by experienced alaka’i who are eager to share their knowledge and love of Hawaiian history, traditions and culture.
Guests learn about the salt of the sea Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on the island of Hawaii has introduced a Salt Harvesting Experience where guests can hike to nearby salt flats with Hualalai's Natural Resources team to harvest fresh sea salt using ancient Hawaiian methods. Natural salt was a cornerstone of Hawaiian living. It was used for food preservation, cooking, detoxification, healing and other medical practices, said Manager of the Kaupulehuy Cultural Centre, Earl Regidor. The experience starts when the guests join their guide for a short hike to the salt flats located adjacent to the resort. Along the way, they will learn how the salt flats were created and the importance of salt in Hawaiian culture. Using spoons and fabric bags, guests will collect the salt from pens carved into the lava rock, before joining Executive Chef Thomas Bellec as he demonstrates how the salt is dried and used in cooking. An optional Salts of the Ocean body treatment can follow at Hualalai Spa, using seven varieties of Hawaiian sea salt and seven unique Hawaiian essences.

Hawaii continues to sizzle Hawaiians celebrated their Fourth of July with the traditional fireworks, but for some people near the eruption of Mount Kilauea on the island of Hawaii they would have seemed puny. But as Darragh Walshe of Hawaii Tourism’s office in Auckland points out, “the activity is limited to the summit (of Kilauea) and a very small part of the island of Hawaii – less than 10 square miles (25 square kilometres, or about 0.2 percent of the island.) “We continue to be concerned for our friends in the affected area,” says Darragh. “At the same time, to minimise the economic damage across our islands, it’s important to know … that it’s safe to visit the island of Hawaii and all the other Hawaiian islands.” While two-thirds of Hawai’i National Park was closed as of late June, all airports and flights are operational, and local businesses and tour companies outside the active areas are open. Kilauea has been erupting for over 35 years, and the eruption “could stop abruptly or go on for months,” say local authorities. Life in the rest of the state goes on, with plenty of festivals and special events. The second annual Hawaii Island Steel Guitar Festival takes place at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows from September 7-9. The music will range across all styles and feature jam sessions, workshops, exhibits, and concerts by some of the instrument’s leading players, including Pomai Brown and Bobby Ingano. Four of the best younger
players aged from 10 to 14, including three girls, will carry the torch for the next generation. A week later, the third annual Hawaii Island Festival of Birds showcases the strenuous efforts to save endangered bird species such as the Hawaiian stilt, the nene, the Hawaiian hawk and the petrel. Grenwell Farms in Kona has been included in Lonely Planet’s new book Global Coffee Tour, a taster’s guide to the best coffee in the world. Visitors can take a free tour of the farm, and try Grenwell’s special private reserve coffee.
Take in the history of Kona coffee Kona coffee is known the world over, and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, visitors to Hawaii Island can experience it first hand at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Kalukalu. The Hands on History program offers an opportunity to catch a glimpse of Kona Coffee history via interactive classes. Held from 11am to 2pm class topics include traditional Hawaiian practices, Japanese culture, and modern sustainability tips. And of course you get to sample some fine brews too. Swim or snorkel in the clear water of Oro natural pool, an enclosed lagoon surrounded by pine trees and separated from the ocean by a coral reef. Visit Queen Hortense’s Cave and its gardens. According to a local legend, a queen hid there for several months during an inter-tribal conflict. Sail an outrigger over Upi Bay and glide along the coast while the skipper explains the island’s culture. After disembarking, stroll to a natural swimming hole. N’Ga Peak is the highest point on the island. The climb to the 262-metre high summit takes about an hour and is rewarded with spectacular views.
36th marathon draws top runner The last Sunday in August is always an exciting time in New Caledonia, with the annual running of the Noumea Marathon. Event sponsor Chateau Royal will have the pleasure of hosting Mr Kawauchi. During the event, the resort will also have a number of special accommodation deals and packages available. And if any runners would like an opportunity to run up against some fantastic international competition, Chateau Royal can assist with arranging marathon and accommodation packages for Sunday August 26.

Park has a primeval landscape
Take a guided tour to various traditional sites, including the town of Vao, the Mission church and the Statue de St Maurice.
The natural landscape of New Caledonia’s Blue River Park, located in the south of the Grande Terre, has not changed for millions of years. The 9000 hectare provincial park is the most popular in the country, and visitors are always welcome, as long as they obey some simple rules. Camping is allowed as long as the tents are taken down every morning, barbecues are generally tolerated, but it’s forbidden to pick up dead wood. Leave your car at the entrance and either go cycling or take the park’s shuttle service.
A narrow peninsula separates Kanumera Bay from Kuto Bay. The coral reef just offshore is great for swimming and snorkelling and has a range of intriguing marine life. The Isle of Pines has over 15 diving sites, all of them situated around the Bay of Gadji. Experienced divers can venture to the Grotte de la Troisieme or go night diving. Local farmers raise snails known as bulimes, which are endemic to the island and a real delicacy. An alternative is freshly caught grilled lobster.
The rewards are scenery at the Col de Plum that harks back to the Jurassic Age, kayaking under a full moon through a drowned forest of bleached logs, viewing relics of mining and forestry exploitation, and spotting cagou, the emblematic bird of New Caledonia.

Diving business wins new tourism award Over 50 tourism businesses across all sectors and provinces of Vanuatu had their efforts recognised at the Bred Bank Vanuatu Tourism Awards, held at the Vanuatu National Convention Centre on June 23. There were a number of new awards this year, including the Minister for Tourism Sustainability Award, won by Big Blue Vanuatu. Big Blue operates a diving business from Port Vila and the judges said the company is acutely aware of the impact the environment has on delivery of its product. Each year Big Blue runs events and works with the community to help reduce local ocean trash. Big Blue also applauded the decision by the Vanuatu government to ban single-use plastic bags, the first country in the Pacific to do so. Over 400 people, the largest ever, attended the ceremony, with families, local communities and entire businesses showing up to support their nominations. “The winners truly highlight what it is to holiday in Vanuatu and what we want our visitors to experience,” said Ms Adela Issachar Aru, Chairperson of the Tourism Awards for Excellence Committee and Chief Executive Officer of the Vanuatu Tourism Office. “This year’s winners and finalists are all deeply passionate about what they do and about Vanuatu, and I was extremely proud to watch them receive their awards.” The entrants and winners came from all over Vanuatu, Ms Aru said. “This really adds another dimension to our tourism product and experience and helps us attract new markets and increase repeat visitation.”

Tour takes in Pele’s attractions Evergreen’s day tour of Pele Island gives visitors the opportunity to visit one of Vanuatu’s most beautiful islands. This is a chance to learn about the historical and local life of the island people, along with their way of daily living. The drive takes up to 30 minutes, followed by a short boat trip to the island, where a local string band will play in the background. Upon stepping ashore, the tour guide outlines the day’s schedule, which can include snorkelling at a beautiful reef site located about 100 metres offshore. The area from this village on Pele Island to Nguna Island has officially been a marine protected area since 2003, so the marine life is abundant. Onshore, there is a sumptuous barbecue lunch with drinks and Tusker beer. Later, a guide leads visitors to a nearby village, where the residents make their living from the abundant waters. There is also a visit to the local primary school to be entertained by their cheerful singing. School supplies are very basic and paper and pencils are sometimes scarce. There is more time for swimming, snorkelling or lazing on the sand until afternoon tea and farewelling the people and the island. The day finishes at around 5.30pm. A portion of the cost of the tour is contributed to the village.

More overseas arrivals for Vanuatu Over 109,100 international visitors poured US$172 million directly into Vanuatu’s economy in 2017, according to the Vanuatu International Visitor Survey. In 2016, 95,100 visitors poured $145 into the economy. Each visitor contributed $1583 per trip, up by 3.7 percent compared with 2016, and spent an average of $195 per day during their stay. Three-quarters of the visitors came from either Australia or New Zealand, and 55 percent were female. “Seventy-eight percent would come back,” the survey said in its key findings. The visitors were satisfied with local people, activities and attractions, and the environment, it said. Nearly half the visitors from Australia were from New South Wales, while Auckland accounted for 33 percent of visitors from New Zealand. Accommodation accounted for $56 million, and another $46 million went on airfares. Food and beverages ($30 million), local transport ($10 million) and retail sales ($7.5 million) and tours ($7.1 million) were other significant contributors. The survey said long-haul travellers accounted for 13 percent of visitor arrivals, with half of them arriving from Europe, and France in particular. China accounted for 42 percent of visitors from Asia. The average stay was eight nights, and 58 percent were visiting for the first time, mostly for a holiday. Thirty-eight percent travelled with one other person, and 14 percent travelled on their own. Fifty-seven percent of all visitors flew Air Vanuatu, but visitors from Pacific countries more commonly used Fiji Airways and Aircalin. Almost everyone – 97 percent – visited Efate, with the next most popular islands being Tanna (18 percent) and Espiritu Santo (15 percent). One percent travelled to Pentecost, which is best known for its nanggol, or land diving.
