We Have a New Novelist He is Bobby Tyler and lives with his wife Nancy and daughter Vondha. They hail from Virginia and have lived on Via Del Sol for 8 years. Bobby’s first novel, “Targets” is about a group of three CIA contractors who take on missions all over the world, eliminating various targets deemed a threat to the United States. They operate in secret, infiltrating foreign nations to eliminate a designated target and to get out without too much notice. This job places them in constant danger with only themselves to depend on to get back home alive. Congratulations Bobby and the best of luck with your exciting, new first novel!

Good Timers’ Singles Club News By Liz Poniatowski Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened... The Good Timers’ had a lot on our agenda last month... the Mardi Gras Party charity fundraiser that Kathy Aira puts on, our monthly Birthday Luncheon at the Victory Lane Cafe, A Taste of Broadway that our very own Del Tura Repertory Company produced, Kinky Boots at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater...but we’re not crying because it’s over , we’re smiling because

Choralaires Spring Concert...“DÉJÀ VU” Ticket distribution begins March 10th! Spring has almost “sprung”, and that can only mean one thing. It’s time for the Choralaires Annual Spring Concert! This year’s theme is really unique, and the members of the chorus are quite excited about it. The theme is “Déjà Vu” and it’s quite simple really. In recent years we’ve continued to hear from residents how much they have enjoyed certain songs the group has performed. Often we’re told “I wish we could hear that again!” Well this year, the Choralairees are going to honor that wish by featuring a performance of “greatest hits” based on the suggestions of our residents and the members themselves. Folks in attendance are going to hear some phenomenal songs from performances past that really were a hit with our audiences. Of course, we’re going to add a few new wrinkles and tunes as well. The date is Saturday March 28th in the Starlight Ballroom. As in years past, there will be a 2pm afternoon and 7pm evening performance. Both will be identical, so choose the one

that fits your schedule and join us. Tickets are once again free and we would hope that you will make a donation to our group the day of the concert. Distribution of tickets will begin on March 10th at the Tuesday morning coffee social for HOA members only. Tickets will also be distributed the following two weeks (March 17th and 24th) at the Tuesday morning coffee social Due to the long lines waiting at the door in the past and the inability of some folks to find a seat, there will be a significant change in ticket distribution this spring so please read the following information carefully: • Unlike previous performances, both concerts will have assigned seating. This is being done to insure a fair and equitable distribution of seats and to eliminate the long lines in the heat that could conceivably form while waiting to get in. • It will assist groups who want to sit together by allowing them to obtain tickets without having to arrive early “save” seats.

• The first morning of distribution (for HOA members only) will run from 7:45 until 8:45 and for fifteen minutes directly after the coffee social. The following two Tuesdays, reserved ticket distribution will be available to the general community starting at 8am. • Those arriving early the first day will sign a sheet with an assigned number provided by the Choralaires. Folks will be called by number to obtain their tickets and table number. There will be a maximum of eight tickets distributed per person. As always, the tickets will continue to be free. • Extra tickets, if any. may be reserved following the 24th, by calling Nancy Adams at 508-284-0919. Reserved tickets as well as any additional undistributed ones will be held at the door.

Mark your calendars! Hope to see you on March 28th!

Will Your Money Last as Long as You Do? What do your fellow citizens fear most? Almost half of them – 49% – are most afraid of running out of money during retirement, a higher percentage than the 44% whose chief concern is failing health, according to a recent survey by Aegon Center for Longevity and other groups. What steps can you take to help ensure your money will last as long as you do? Here are a few suggestions:

 Estimate your longevity. None of us can say for sure how long we’ll live. However, you can make some educated guesses based on your health and family history. And once you do have at least a ballpark figure, you can then determine about how much money you may need to last the rest of your lifetime. A word of caution: It’s probably going to be more than you think. Health care costs alone can run into the hundreds of thousands, even with Medicare.  Determine when you’ll retire. Your retirement age will have a big impact on how long your money can last. The longer you work, the more you can contribute to your retirement plans, such as your IRA and 401(k). Plus, if you have health insurance through work, you should be able to cover some of the out of pocket health care costs you’d normally have to pay if you’re retired.  Invest as much as you can in your retirement. During your working years, contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. And every time you get a raise, try to increase the amount you put into your employer’s plan.

 Protect yourself from long-term care costs. If you’re fortunate, you’ll never needany type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home health care provider. Still, there are no guarantees, and long-term care expenses can be big enough to threaten your retirement savings. The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is about $100,000 per year, while a home health aide costs about $50,000 per year, according to the insurance company Genworth. Medicare typically pays just a small portion of these amounts, so you may want to purchase a long-term care insurance policy that will pay for qualified long-term care costs. Or you might consider a “hybrid” policy, which combines long-term care protection with life insurance. So, if you never needed long term care, your hybrid policy would pay a death benefit to your beneficiary, but if you did need the care, your policy would pay benefits toward those expenses.  Choose an appropriate withdrawal rate. During your retirement, you’ll need to withdraw money from your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts. But you’ll want to avoid taking out too much each year, especially during the early years of your retirement. It’s important to establish an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your needs, taking into account your age, sources of income, lifestyle and other factors.

The thought of running out of money during retirement is scary indeed – but by making smart choices, you can go a long way toward alleviating this fear and enjoying your life as a retiree. On Friday, February 14th, we took a picture celebrating Valentine’s Day by dancing to love songs and wearing red or pink. Our Dance Fitness instructor, Adele, did a great job leading the class. The classes are held in the Starlight Ballroom on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday from 9:00AM to 10:00AM. We have lots of fun exercising/dancing to music and it is a great way to make friends. It improves our emotional health along with our physical health. Reflections… By Dianne J. Roderick

“Family” Thinking of family and what that should mean. I’m not sure that we can just fit a specific meaning to family. It seems that its meaning goes so much deeper than the original dictionary meaning. Most dictionaries still define the noun family as; “a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household” or “all the descendants of a common ancestor”. It goes so much further than that, don’t you think? It may begin with two people who fall in love and become parents and that family may share descendants of a common ancestor but it doesn’t completely explain what family can truly look like. Family, Familia, Famille....pronounced differently with every nationality; yet the make-up of family can vary in so many

cultures. There are so many adjectives that try to describe what a family really looks like in today’s world. Throughout our lifetimes the original picture that was painted for us has been transformed into a canvas of portraits that try to explain the many “Modern Family” definitions. When I reflect on our family as a child, I always refer to my experiences as growing up in an extended family. We were so blessed to be surrounded by parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins...and yet not all were connected by blood but certainly connected by love. Blood, or no blood ties we were a family! Through the good times and not so good times we supported one another...staying close enough to lend a helping hand to each other. Never giving up on one another. Families, bond together by love and compassion, that’s the

key to keeping it altogether in this life. It doesn’t matter if everyone shares the same DNA or not. A family grows when we connect with others in special ways, what begins as a friendship turns into a heartfelt connection that is with us throughout our lives. Before you know it Charlie from down the street and Gladys from your church are coming over every Sunday for dinner. Another cherished family member, bonded together for a lifetime out of friendship and love. Today’s families may be called, by modern definition, extended, single parent, childless, LGBT, blended, or mixed but they all have to have three things in common in order to coexist happily with each other. Love, compassion, and support for each other are the three key elements that will get them through the happiest and most challenging times.

This year (2019) the Basket Charity Program continued to exceed our expectations. Del Tura continues to grow and it seems that all the new residents are every bit as giving as the existing ones. The Del Tura Basket Program is now 39 Years Old and still going strong, thanks the donations (food, money & gifts) by the RESIDENTS OF DEL TURA. In addition to all the donations there is also an overwhelming volunteer effort that makes programs like this possible. Special thanks also to the Craft Fair Bake Sale and Make-EM-Laugh for their generous financial contributions. We provided food and gifts to 70 less fortunate families for the 8th year in a row, and as you can see from the financials (shown below) the Basket Program is positioned to help 70 families again next year. We will also be donating money to a needy charity in the early portion of 2020. It may look like a lot of money being carried over into 2020 but those funds allow us to buy all year long.

For those of you that do not know what the Basket Program is all about, we provide complete Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners as well as boxes of staple food and at Christmas, gifts for each family member living in the household. As we have in past years, Christmas gift buying has already begun for Christmas 2020. By buying throughout the year we can take advantage of sales, to ensure there are adequate food and gifts for the 2020 Families Again, our heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to the holiday collection and to all the volunteers that collected, wrapped and packed the baskets. We would like to mention all of you by name, but the list is just TOO long.

Del Tura Creative Writer’s Workshop By Nancy Davy Our Del Tura Creative Writers Workshop continues to meet every challenge with flying colors. We currently have 10 contributing members, and an additional new member working on the first assignment. Our ninth challenge was “Creating a beat (Chant)”. Now that we are dabbling a bit with poetic expression, let’s try pounding out a definite beat. The lines do not need to rhyme. We are concentrating on forming a beat. Try choosing openings from the list provided, or choose some of your own. You don’t have to begin every line with it but make repetition integral to the overall poem. Use long lines to create a beat, and, above all, have fun with it. The purpose is to feel how a repeated phrase can become a baseline rhythm for a poem as well as to recognize the difference between meaningful repetition and monotony. Our meeting dates for March are 3/12 and 3/26, from 2:00pm - 3:30 pm in the Card Room. Following are some of the contributions from our writers. Note, all work is available for your reading enjoyment in the library!

The Sun - By Denny Major Did you watch the sun rise today; did it make you come alive? To start your day anew; to start your day with a smile. Did you see the sun set today; did you watch until the last ray? To end your day with a feeling, fulfilled; to once more end your day. Did you see the colors bounce off the clouds; did you hear them speak to you out loud? Hopefully, tomorrow you will be renewed; the sun will rise and set anew. Time - By Denny Major I guess today should be about the garage. It is an ongoing thing. Put up a pegboard, hang some tools. It is an ongoing thing. Empty boxes; place the contents on the shelf; release floor space to put something else. Oh, wait! Creative writing class is creeping up. It is an ongoing thing. What will I write? A story or a poem? It is an ongoing thing. Sweat in the garage or sit in a chair; arrange all the tools or write a new tale? Where will my time be best spent? It is an ongoing thing. Golfing - By Karen Brennan Yesterday I went to golf, my score was off the chart Yesterday I shanked a shot and also banged my cart Yesterday I could not drive or even chip or putt Yesterday I hit a guy; I hit him in the butt. But tomorrow, oh tomorrow, it is another day And tomorrow I will hit my drives well down the long fairway #1 - By Nancy Ashe Through the door comes thunder and lightning, upsetting a blissful moment Through the door comes a message of sadness of a loved one’s passing Through the door walk friends I need so very very much Through the door come their hugs, their smiles, their extra magical touch As days move forward, I finally come to realize Through the door of peace and well-being, my loved one resides. #2 - By Nancy Ashe When I think of the roads travelled In life many miles have unraveled When I think of the surprises that appear Simply by turning the corner and finding someone there When I think of the kind souls that have crossed my path I believe you are truly my other half In life, dreams, ambitions and goals When I think of you, I found pure gold I Was Thinking….. - By Dianne Roderick I would like to teach the world to live in perfect harmony. I was thinking of how compassion and sincerity are missing today. I’d like to create a world where only love would be. I was thinking of how compassion and sincerity are missing today. I would spread the world with kindness and pray for all to see… I was thinking of how compassion and sincerity are missing today. That empathy for humanity will make this world a better place to be. I was thinking of how compassion and kindness are missing today.

SPORTS & EXERCISE 9-Hole Women’s Golf Assoc. By Sandy Gove DTNHWGA members have much to celebrate. Two days of play in weather of extreme heat to low temps ended with our new Club Champion, Mary Kay Tointon!! Those placing first in their flights were Kathy Klein, Flight 1; Karen Brennan, Flight 2; and Barb Jones, Flight 3. Nicely done ladies. Several members enjoyed the Hometown Invitational, but Maureen Monroy really had a great day with her Hole in One on #6 North earning her a trip for two to Las Vegas! Kudos Maureen. The Couples’ Valentine Challenge brought great attendance. The dinner that followed showcased members’ favorite hors d’oeuvre and desserts, and Hog body’s served a great dinner. The refreshment committee made sure there was lots of pink and red to celebrate the special day. Many thanks to all involved in planning this event. Members, friends and family gathered at #3 South recently to dedicate the garden bench and adjacent planters of succulents established as a memorial to those long-time members of the group who are no longer with us. Name plaques for 9-holers who have passed, Gay Luders and Shirley Williams (made by Al Wells), have been

attached. Funding for the memorial was shared by the Williams family and the 9-Hole members. All are invited to enjoy the location tucked under the trees that provides a lovely spot for a quiet moment. The annual Member/Member will be held March 11 & 12 with lunch to follow. If you’ve not participated in the past, consider it this year. It’s a fun event, and with so many new members, someone might just be waiting to be asked!

18 Hole Women’s Golf Association TEE OFF TIME By Margie Blackwell New and Returning Members Welcome to our new members who joined us in the last thirty days - Cilla Canney, Ann Hoglund and Joanne Liberles. Also, Rynnetta McCrank has joined us again! We are happy to have you all with us. Tournaments Golfers in the Member-Member Tournament were extremely happy with the wonderful weather on both days of the event in late January. Winners in each of the two flights were:

There was also a good turnout for the annual Valentines Tournament. Winners will be included in next month’s Tower article. Be sure to keep an eye out in the dungeon for other upcoming events, including those sponsored by the Pro Shop. The “Golf for the Cure” Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st. It is always a terrific day of golf and friendship. So, don’t miss out! Memorial Bench You may recall that a memorial bench was donated and placed at the #1 West tee box about one year ago. With the help of several people, including Bertie Dugo, Wilma and Rick Antaya, and Carol Burnison, it has become a beautiful area with nice plants and shrubbery surrounding the bench. Thank you to all who are involved with the ongoing maintenance of this area.

By Glenn Tointon DEL TURA BOWLING HEADS TOWARD THE FINAL STRETCH With eight weeks left, the teams are beginning to bunch up heading into the final stretch. The Warriors are still leading but the gap is closing quickly by the 10 Pins. Linda Laird, Joan Whaley, Gary Cromer, and Chuck Hokey need to be a little worried about Janet Ragone, Sue Brown, Marianela Tamayo, and Dave Csuy as they have reduced the lead from 16 games to 9 games all in one week! I think I heard

them say: “move over Warriors ‘cuz here we come!” With a half game separating the next three teams anything can happen. Who Cares with Sue Larson, Sue Smith, Keven Trombley, and Frank Barilla are in third while Dan’s Fans with Susan Baron, Cindy Baron, Jackie Cromer, and Big Dan Larson are in fourth. Tied with them are We Forgot comprised of Glenn Tointon, Marly Haag, Janet Huss, and Joe Pollock. Top bowlers this week were: Men: Dan Larson 212, Chuck Hokey 207, Joe Pollock 202, Tom Demshak 199, Dave Csuy

197, Leon Buss 183, Paul Smith 183, and Ken Baron 181 Ladies: Diane Smith 187, Pat Roush 183, Denise Rose 178, Jane Snyder 177, Jackie Cromer 172, MaryKay Tointon 168, Sue Brown 167, Joan Whaley 166 Good luck to all the teams looking for a strong finish. Just remember: good speed, lead with the correct foot, eye on your mark, follow through, arm up, eyes open, don’t fall, and most important is to remember, the bowling alley cleans the gutters so you don’t have too. ENJOY the next eight weeks!

Traveling Shuffleboard League By Glenn Tointon DEL TURA TRAVELING SHUFFLEBOARD ON A REBUILDING YEAR After opening the season by defeating both Six Lakes and Herons Glen by scores of 16-14, they then lost to a strong Windmill Village team by the same score. On February 6th they fell to a very good, okay, excellent team from Lake Arrowhead by a score of 26-4! Lake Arrowhead has three professional shufflers on their team which really puts them in a league above us. On our behalf, we were missing two of

our best players from illness and surgery. After losing two of our best players from last year we are finding ourselves in a rebuilding season, one we haven’t had to face in a long time. We are looking for new players to join us. You don’t have to be great players, just willing to be taught strategy and defense. We are more than willing to teach you the right way to play the game if you think you would like to join us. Our games are played at one o’clock on Wednesdays and last only eleven weeks. Although we do travel to close communities, we are a fun

league. We love to win, but in the end it’s all about meeting and enjoying new friends from the various communities. Please contact Glenn at 920-309-1294 with questions. As of the time of this writing we are 50-70. Congrats to Glenn Tointon with a record of 13-2, Marcella Caruthers and Marlene Eck at 9-5,Janet Reinen at 7-5, and MaryKay Tointon at 5-3. Others who’s records don’t always show their abilities this early into the season are: Judy Lessard, Denny Major, Carolyn Brueggerman, Cam Smith, Kurt King, Kathy Boesel, and Diana Camp.

Friday Shuffleboard League y Jack Blevons B It’s February 7th, so time to get my letter written to make the March Tower. Also, being Friday, we played week 12 of our season today so now I can update the standings after today’s play. The A-Flight leaders are as follows. In 1st place are: Glenn & Mary Kay Tointon with a win record of 29/7. They are followed by the teams of Marcella Carothers/

Curt King and Marlene Eck/ Dave Lessard tied for 2nd place just 1-game behind at 28/8. The B-Flight leaders in 1st place are: Kathy Boesel & Mary Pimental with an 18/18 record & they are followed by the two teams of Ray David & Cam Smith and Audrey Pearson & Deb Taylor, both with records of 16/20. Still close races in both flights with just 5-weeks left to play in the regular season as of today’s writing. So far, we

have been blessed with good weather on Fridays with no games rained out so hopefully that will continue. By the time I write my article next month, on March 6th, there will only be one week left of regular play. Then on March 20th will be our 8-Team Tournament which will be followed by our annual Bust-Up Party on the 20th & that will be the end of our 2019-2020 season.

Thursday Night HOA Sponsored Bingo

Jack Blevons By By the time you all read this, we will be in our last month of HOA Sponsored Thursday Night Bingo because our season ends on March 26th & won’t resume again until probably October 15th. Since the 1st of the year our attendance has picked up which means the pay-outs are bigger & we all know it’s fun when we can take larger amounts of money back home with us. So, if you have been coming, you know our games are still easy to play which makes it more fun to play as well as winning bigger

pots rather than small ones. Hopefully we keep getting larger crowds so we can keep paying out more money. As a reminder, you have to be at least 18-years of age to be in the bingo hall as well as to play. It’s just a short night to get out of the house for a couple of hours to have some fun. Ticket sales open at 6:00 in the Starlight Ballroom & close promptly at 6:45 & we start playing at 7:00. Minimum cost to play is just $6 but you can also buy other game sheets as well as Hot-Ball & Share the Wealth for additional cash. Because I play also & to have

ONE LUNCHEON DOWN AND ONE TO GO Thank you to all the FISH Volunteers who attended the Appreciation Luncheon on February 11th in the Starlight Ballroom. The FISH Board was honored to honor our volunteers. Thank you so much for all you do to assist our residents here in Del Tura. For those volunteers who could not attend, we will be delivering a small gift of appreciation. We had a blast, thanks to our very talented entertainer, Mackenzie Bart and her puppet, Roxy. Mackenzie was in college when she was named the winner of a reality show, “America’s Next Weatherman”. Before her senior year she won the title of Miss Ohio and went on to Miss America Scholarship Competition in 2015. With help from Roxy, they sang, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and won the talent competition. Some said that her talent was bizarre, but I think not! She stole the show! Mackenzie also earned a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) scholarship, which assisted in her education. After she witnessed the destruction from an EF5 Tornado in Missouri, she realized that she needed to protect others from such a weather event. Mackenzie went on to graduate from Ohio State University with a major in Communications and a minor in Atmospheric Sciences. Obviously, she does not just rely on her very pretty face. She committed her year of service as Miss Ohio by visiting every single

child’s hospital and veteran’s home in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. She continues not only to work at ABC-7 here in Fort Myers, she also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity to support disaster relief and many other community non-profit organizations. Next up for our FISH Volunteers is another luncheon. This one is from RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteers Program) and is on March 5th at the Broadway Palms Theatre. If you (FISH Volunteer) have not received your invitation by now, please call our Del Tura Administrator, Betty Scheetz so she may get you an invite. Thank you once again to our volunteers who allow our residents to get to doctor and dentist appointments, go grocery shopping, receive a dinner after being in the hospital, have their fruit trees picked, able to borrow equipment when needed (Do Not Buy!) and help when a love one has passed. You do not have to be a HOA or a FMO member to enjoy FISH’s assistance. Just call us at 997-3474. Ginnie Benjamins, President

Model Native Garden Club Lee/Collier County Compost Facility Field Trip By Rosemary Eiden

Compost Has Proven to Help Wonders Several garden club members toured the Lee County Solid Waste Facility this past month. 250,000 tons of shredded debris (like palm fronds, tree and shrub limbs, leaves) get hauled to the facility daily to be made into compost in 30 days’ time. There are only 8 sites in Florida and we are lucky to have one right here in Lee County. With cured solid waste (the nitrogen portion) and yard debris (the carbon portion) windrow equipment stirs the long rows. Some were actively steaming during our visit. Eighty percent of the finished compost gets hauled to the orchards and spread on the soil.

Twenty percent is available and bagged for the homeowner use. I apply 8 bags to my yard per season. 3 scoops can be used in the hole when planting a new plant, it can be spread in the beds where plants are actively growing, then mulch over the top to keep it in place. Plants respond immediately to the ‘black gold’. Not only does it supply nutrients to plants, but it makes the ‘Florida sand’ friable and acts like glue to hold nutrients near the roots. Eventually soil organisms enter the picture to eat up the compost and leave their valuable byproducts. As earthworms travel through the soil they leave air pockets for the roots to travel. It’s a win/win for gardeners, the

environment, and of course those beautiful plants. Compost can be purchased for $2.80/20 lb bag. Drive on to the scale, pay, then go in to collect your compost.
