The sun is (hopefully) shining, which means that local cherries and apricots are now on the shelves in our farm shops. No mean feat to grow, apricot trees require a lot of looking after. It’s thanks to our unique microclimate and extra hours of sunshine that we are lucky enough to be able to grow them pretty darn well! Get yours at Farmer Jacks at Arreton Barns, Brownriggs or Briddlesford Lodge Farm.

NEW K I DS O N T H E B L OCK There are plenty of new places to try this summer, it’s great to see more places popping up all over the Island. Over in the West Wight, the latest addition to the foodie scene is The Freshwater Coffee House. A great place to stop for a cuppa, meet up with friends or even do a spot of work, the team are super friendly and extremely welcoming. For the sweet-toothed, the newly opened Minghella Parlour at The Duck in Ryde should be on your radar. Featuring the largest choice of Minghella ice cream on the Island, why not pop out just for pudding? Further along, you will find 20 Esplanade, an eatery and delicatessen serving hand-selected artisan produce – they also offer a picnic service! Making its own pizza, pitta bread, burger buns and more, the team behind the brand new Stripped in Ventnor, are certainly some excellent artisan bakers. Trendy but casual, this is a great addition to the town, which already has good claim to the number one food and drink hotspot on the Island! For comic book and Marvel fans, a visit to the brand new ComiCoffee in Newport. taste o f th e w ig h t.c o .u k

QU AR R A BBE Y
Quarr Abbey has the perfect balance between field and fork, with parts of the Abbey’s 200 acre estate being worked to produce a huge array of food stuffs...
Page 8
The style of growing here is definitely traditional and in keeping with the overall ethos of the Abbey – that you get back what you put in. Head Gardener Matthew Noyce takes this literally with traditional growing methods, nothing is artificially grown, nor are any pesticides used. This results in a far more labour intensive growing plan, but the taste and variety on offer make it all worthwhile. Following the traditional theme, much of the fruit and veg grown here are of a heritage variety, although they look anything but traditional! From purple carrots to the aptly named Turks Turban squash, heritage and legacy vegetables allow a range of flavours to be grown. The tea and farm shop sits within a beautifully maintained garden with the imposing Abbey creating a picture-perfect backdrop. Chefs work closely with the gardening team to create specials showing off what is on offer. Sharer’s boards are a favourite and it’s easy to see why. Using freshly picked salads and produce taken directly from the Abbey’s vegetable plot, with choices of meat, fish and ploughman’s, creating a delicious lunch for two.
Add in some of Quarr’s own chutneys or preserved pears and wash it down with a Quarr Abbey Ale you possibly have the most ‘local’ lunch available on the Island! The range of products in the farm shop that is either grown, made or farmed on the Abbey’s grounds is staggering. Jams and chutneys jostle for space next to apple juice (apples fresh from the orchard) whilst still and sparkling cider go down a treat in the warm summer months. Apples for the cider are exclusively from the Abbey’s orchard with more than 120 trees. Spend a day at Quarr Abbey visiting the art gallery, walking the beautiful grounds or just relaxing with a cuppa!
The tea and farm shop are open daily: Weekdays 10.00 to 5.00 and Sundays 11.15 to 5.00 quarrabbey.org

Luckily all around the Island we have excellent bars, cafés and restaurants that are right next to the sea. So if you’ve arrived by yacht, by kayak or even by paddle board, you’ll find the best of Island food – wherever you walk ashore.
From the cove to the plate at The Beach Shack, Steephill Cove
Overlooking Bembridge Foreland, The Crab and Lobster looks out over the beach and although it’s not really “arriving” by sea, you are so close you will feel like you have. They serve from breakfast through to dinner and it’s a fabulous view point for ship spotting.
Into the Solent and you’re reaching foodie heaven. The Hut in Colwell Bay is a mustmention if only for the fact you need to book to be sure of a table. Right next to the sea (call ahead for the harbour taxi which will take you straight from your boat), The Hut has grown from, well, a hut, to a chilled place to take a relaxed meal. Next beach up and you’re at Totland Pier (unfortunately derelict – don’t try to moor up as it has got a gaping hole in it which might be hard to jump) but try The Totland Pier Café sitting right on the land-end. At low water, the beach has plenty of sand to drag a paddle board or a dinghy ashore. There’s a whole host of places to eat around the marinas on the Island including The Lifeboat, at East Cowes Marina.
Steephill Cove, south west of Ventnor, is a special place, as much for the fact that it’s as accessible – more so perhaps – by sea as it is by road. Coming to it landwards means a walk past the Cricket Club and down the hilly footpath, but from the water all you need to navigate are the rock pools that protect this beautiful part of the beach. Ashore, head for The Beach Shack for a snack and an ice cream, or choose the The Boat House restaurant where you can taste locally-caught shellfish brought ashore by the cove’s own fishermen. Unrivalled views out over the Solent and Hurst Spit from The Hut

Recently opened, and right next to the visitors’ moorings in Bembridge Harbour Marina is the Duver Café. A bijou jewel of a place where you can get the best bacon sandwich – or bun with egg, sausage, bubble and squeak, or all three. Add a coffee from the marvellous Mabel – it’s the kind of place where the coffee machine has a name – and eat al fresco by Bembridge Harbour.
The ‘Back of the Wight’ is a challenge for the hungry seafarer, being known more for its shipwrecks than its cuisine – at least at sea level! But, if you’ve launched your kayak from Alum Bay then paddle around to Freshwater and come onto dry land in the bay. On a yacht, it’s a good anchorage in a northerly when the Solent side of the Island will be uncomfortable. Once on dry land, you’ve a choice of bars, including the Piano Café, about a five minute walk up past the famous thatched church. There you can try a selection of mezze, Isle of Wight cured Biltong and coffees, teas, beers and wines. If you don’t want to lose sight of your kit, grab a coffee or a cuppa from the Freshwater Lifeboat Station. It’s not high cuisine, but the tea is hot and it’s wet and there for a good cause.
Page 12
Only the freshest flavours available at Three Buoys, Ryde - best enjoyed while taking in the Porstmouth horizon.
Well worth a stop, it’s a family-friendly bar and a lovely outside space. With the tide underneath you, follow the river upstream where you’ll find Island Harbour and The Breeze restaurant. With stunning views across the marina and over the River Medina, the restaurant serves up tasty dishes featuring local produce, as well as a great menu for vegetarians and vegans.
Further along the river, head to The Bargeman’s Rest on Newport Quay for proper grub, good ales and live music. The north east corner of the Island is as well served as the west with restaurants and cafés. The Three Buoys at Appley Beach is a perfect place for a chat over lunch or a romantic evening dinner. Last but not least to Seaview, where two very different, but both excellent pubs, can serve you a late supper with your summer sundowners. Float ashore at Puckpool beach and wander up to The Boathouse where locally sourced fish, cheese and meat are brought together on a menu that’s perfect for a summer evening. As the sun goes down, take an evening ale or glass of wine at The Old Fort on Seaview esplanade.
The Boathouse, Seaview - the perfect spot to while away the evening.

M A R K S & S P E NC E R M&S Newport is celebrating beef provenance this summer by creating its Expert Guide to Cooking Beef, so anyone can enjoy the perfect steak or roast… David Hancock, Store Manager at M&S Newport, said:
F I N D I N G T HE P ER F EC T C U T O F S T EAK
“With summer upon us, lots of customers in Newport are looking for the perfect beef to BBQ. We’re the only national retailer to trace all our beef back to the farm and animal it came from. We think our beef is the best, so it deserves to be treated with care when it comes to cooking it. From show stopping roasts to succulent steaks, we’re sharing our top tips and insights for cooking beef to perfection, so anyone can be an expert.”
Every cut of beef has its own characteristics and flavour profile, so knowing the difference is key to finding your perfect choice. If you’re wondering what makes a fillet distinct from rib-eye then look no further than our guide below…
If you’re planning an extraspecial Sunday roast, start with our boneless rolled rib, which is matured for 28 days. Place the rib in a roasting tin, rub with a glug of olive oil and season with salt and pepper before roasting for 1 hour at 175°C/350°F. After 1 hour, add whole blanched potatoes, heritage rainbow carrots and halved washed and trimmed beetroots with some sprigs of thyme and rosemary before putting back in the oven for 50 minutes. Leave to rest for 10 minutes before serving sliced with the roasted root vegetables and juices from the pan.

1. Fillet Lean, with a delicate flavour and melt-in-the-mouth texture, fillet is taken from the centre of the loin where the muscle does no work, giving a tender cut. Best served rare. 2. Flat iron Taken from the shoulder and trimmed into a neat portion, this full-flavoured cut is at its best served rare and sliced across the grain. 3. Rib-eye This flavoursome cut from the fore rib has a good marbling of fat that melts to baste the steak as it cooks. Best served medium, rather than rare, to render the fat for maximum taste. 4. Rump Firm in texture, great value and full of flavour, a rump is a big, lean cut from the back that can be beautifully succulent if you cook it rare and rest it well. taste o f th e w ig h t.c o .u k
5. Sirloin A thin layer of fat runs along the edge of this faintly marbled cut from the middle back. Serve medium to rare and rest well to give it a deliciously tender texture.

It’s the extra sunshine we enjoy here on the Isle of Wight that helps The Tomato Stall grow Britain’s best loved tomatoes... Tomatoes have been grown in the Arreton Valley for over 30 years, where the Island’s unique maritime climate provides the ideal growing conditions. The Tomato Stall was founded in 2007 to showcase the speciality organic and conventional tomato varieties grown on the Isle of Wight, and take them direct to farmers’ markets in London. The reception the tomatoes received at the markets was overwhelming and, over time, they have travelled far and wide trading at farmers’ markets all over the south and throughout central London including the now famous Borough Market. They are also on the menu at some of the country’s best restaurants, with chefs including Gordon Ramsay, James Martin and Mark Hix among the many fans. The two head growers based at the Isle of Wight nursery boast a wealth of experience and expertise (50 years combined). Growing a wide range of tomatoes and utilising a number of sustainable farming methods throughout the nursery, including biological pest control, rainwater harvesting and biodegradable growing systems. Up to 200 varieties of tomato are grown and trialled each year, and the search is always on for the next best tomato. Each variety
is rigorously taste tested to ensure the best possible flavour before making its way to the consumer. Encouraged by the fantastic feedback received on the fresh speciality tomatoes, a few years ago The Tomato Stall began to experiment, making a range of unique tomato inspired products. They now produce a wide range of award-winning products that encapsulate the ‘flavour is foremost’ ethos. All the products are completely additive and preservative free, plus suitable for vegan and gluten free diets. For their delicious range of roasted tomatoes a specially designed oven is used to slowly dry vine ripened tomatoes, intensifying their natural flavour and resulting in soft, tender fruits drenched in extra virgin olive oil. Available in warming Chilli and Fennel, classic Garlic and Basil, moreish Oak Smoked and now rich Oak Roasted and Balsamic, they are perfect for antipasti, salads, cooking or just to snack. For a refreshing summer cocktail or healthy soft drink, enjoy their pure tomato juices, available in classic red colour or amazing gold. The Arreton nursery is not open to the public but you can find The Tomato Stall’s fresh tomatoes and delicious
product range in a variety of shops, delis and restaurants across the Island, as well as order online for home delivery – check the website for stockist details and their online shop. thetomatostall.co.uk

What is the best thing about the Isle of Wight’s foodie scene?
Where is your favourite place for a cuppa and a slice of something nice?
Having spent a lot of my life in other people’s pubs, it feels great to have been able to create my own, with everything I could want – The Spyglass is completely unique! Also, I have been lucky enough to make some wonderful friends along the way, from customers to staff, some of who have been with us for 30 years now.
Every morning, my wife Steph and I walk our dog, Wilson, along the seafront to The Beach Shack at Steephill Cove, we love it there.
What is your local tipple? Yates Golden Bitter. It’s a light, refreshing golden bitter with fruity after tones, and a subtle bitter finish.
What is the one dish on your menu you keep coming back to? For me, I always choose something from our specials board which showcases the best and freshest local produce, so can’t pick just one.
What is your favourite event on the Island? It has to be Ventnor Carnival (8 August). My family has been involved in the carnival since it began over a hundred years ago. We always put a float in and support the local community. It’s a really fun event for all the family and the town comes alive.

We all scream for Ice Cream
This small Island is home to not just one, but two wonderful ice cream brands... Local favourite the Isle of Wight Ice Cream Company and the legendary Minghella, eaten in theatres up and down the land. Milk for both is sourced only from Isle of Wight cows and never travels more than 2 miles (or about 6 fields) from production to manufacture.
This love for ice cream doesn’t just stop at the producers, with many eateries offering it on the dessert menus and other places dedicated to serving ice cream in all its guises.
Here you can try Minghella ice cream in a sundae (we recommend the Oriental – ginger and honey ice cream, mango coulis, crushed ginger nuts and frozen raspberries), a float (it has got to be IW Mermaid Gin, served with gin and grapefruit sorbet and double dutch tonic) or just a scoop or three! theduckiow.co.uk

At Muzza’s Kitchen on Sandown High Street you could be forgiven for thinking you had walked into an ice cream parlour, when in fact, they are serving up gelato. Our love of locally sourced food and drink is nothing new, but seeking out authentic regional producers has regained huge popularity in recent times and here at the Western tip of the Island we’re proud purveyors of the best the Isle of Wight has to offer... Victorian sweets have experienced quite the renaissance in the past decade, with traditional manufacturing methods, flavours and packaging providing a really nostalgic experience. You can browse a vast array of these traditional sweets in our Isle of Wight Sweet Shop and Manufactory, as well as watching in awe and wonder as our confectioners create these sweet treats in front of your very eyes. Made from raw natural ingredients on site, we have a wide variety of flavours to choose from, including old favourites like Rhubarb & Custard, Banana Split, Strawberries & Cream, Pear Drops and many, many more including the famous ‘Wight Mint’. For those with a penchant for savoury products, our Taste of the Wight outlet is designed to showcase a wide selection of the very best produce that the Island has to offer. We stock beer and ale from Island breweries, who have been producing since the 1800s using traditional methods, with natural Island spring water and special yeast to create a unique
taste. You can also pick-up local apple juice and cider, fruit wines, liqueurs and cordials during your time with us. The Isle of Wight is home to the largest garlic grower in the UK who produce a vast array of chutneys and relishes to compliment any dish, most of which we stock here at The Needles. Likewise, our southerly location makes for great chilli growing conditions and we’re proud to purvey ‘The House of Chilli’products, from chilli-infused sauces, chutneys and chocolates to the aptly named ‘Baptism of Fire’ Vodka. With a warm welcome also awaiting you in Marconi’s licensed tea rooms, named after the great Guglielmo Marconi who sent the very first wireless transmission from here in 1897, there’s no need to ‘shop until you drop’ as you can take time out from your adventures to enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or speciality coffee, a range of sinful cakes and pastries and an extensive selection of soft drinks, cold beers and
alcoholic beverages. During 2017, our Marconi’s Restaurant has been refurbished with a brand new conservatory for our visitors to enjoy. For a more substantial freshly prepared meal for all the family, why not take advantage of the views over our festival street and sample the array of food choices the Restaurant has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you to The Needles: Landmark Attraction for an authentic Isle of Wight experience. The Island has many classic viewpoint picnic spots – this one overlooking Freshwater Bay and Tennyson Down.
When the sun is shining, eating al fresco in some of the Island’s prettiest spots will make for a day to remember for all the family. Here is our round up of some of the best spots to try…
St Helens Duver has something for everyone. There are sandy beaches, rock pools, sand dunes and coastal woods all within a small area. The Duver is easily accessible from the car park.
The National Trust has plenty of beautiful places to choose from. For some of the best views across the Isle of Wight, you would be hard-pressed to find better than Tennyson Down, where you can see The Needles one way and Compton Bay the other. The stunning walled gardens of Mottistone Manor provide a wonderful historic background. Plus if you forget some of your picnic items, you can purchase refreshments on site.
For a classic car park viewpoint picnic, take your pick from Blackgang Chine, Brading Down, Culver Down, Alum Bay, Bouldner Viewpoint and many more!
Take a walk to the ominously named Devils Chimney, set halfway between Shanklin and Ventnor, you will see the Smugglers Haven and Devils Chimney signposted. There are a number of picnic benches to settle on, or at the top is a great little café, Smugglers Haven (in case you forget your flask of tea). Brighstone Forest is the largest forest on the Island and a great place to head for a picnic when the weather looks changeable. The forest feels magical, you can create a whole imaginary world with the kids.

Going out for cream tea on holiday is a tradition that shows no sign of waning, remaining a deeply entrenched part of British culture. Here is our guide to some of the best places to get your fill across the Island…
Chessell Pottery has been celebrated for years for its cream teas. Recently under new management, the team show no sign of disappointing their loyal following. Here, scones are plain, fruit or lemon and poppyseed, and (much to our delight) two scones are served. Generally the fruit and plain are served with strawberry jam and clotted cream, and the lemon scone is served with lemon curd and clotted cream… although people are very welcome to choose what they prefer. They also do a Savoury Cream Tea which is a homemade cheese scone, along with local cheese and homemade pineapple chutney. chessellpotterybarns.co.uk
Page 42
If you are frequenting Shanklin Old Village, there are more than a few reasons to visit Vernon Cottage, but the homemade strawberry cream tea has got to be the number one. Generous portions are served up in a picturesque thatched cottage with pretty, sunny gardens. Try one of the Isle of Wightshaped scones for instagram-worthy pics. Homemade cakes available from Vernon Cottage, Shanklin Old Village.

When you step inside you will be transported back to the 1940s. Tea is served in real china cups and period newspapers are rolled up ready to read. meet the chef Charlie Bartlett, The Duck What is the best thing about being a chef and restaurant owner? The versatility. We can change and adapt things for our customers as and when and try new things, we’re constantly evolving and improving.
What is your local tipple? I’m sure it has been said before, but it has to be an IW Distillery Mermaid Gin & Tonic. We serve it with Double Dutch’s pomegranate and basil tonic at The Duck, which comes with fresh grapefruit and basil.
What is the one dish on your menu you keep coming back to? That’s a difficult one, it’s probably a split between the classic crab ramekin and my Thai fishcakes. The crab ramekin dates back to my days at The Seaview Hotel in 1987 and we created the Thai fishcakes at what was The Net in Bembridge in 2001. Lots of our loyal customers still ask for them now!
The terrace at The Royal Hotel in Ventnor – the view is absolutely stunning.
What is your favourite event on the Island? There are lots of great events on the Island and for foodies, I don’t think you can beat a day at The Garlic Festival (18 August).

When the sun is shining, there is little better than grabbing a few chums, some drinks and setting up a sizzling barbecue. The Island has some stunning locations in which to enjoy a bit of alfresco dining... Red Cliff at Yaverland is the only IW Council run beach that allows barbecues. It’s one of the Island’s best beaches, providing a long stretch of sand and great swimming waters for children and families, so why not make a whole day of it?
Compton Beach is a perfect barbecue spot. After a day spent having fun in the water, set up your fire (away from others) and pop some bits on the barbie. Try local butchers such as Farmer Jacks, Brownriggs and Briddlesford for some of the tastiest sausages and burgers around. They also do a great range of locally grown vegetables, perfect for adding some colour to your grill. Hire one of the purpose-built barbecues at Fort Victoria Country Park. The fort, built in 1855, provides a dramatic backdrop to your event. Groups of 12 or fewer can turn up and use one if they are free, but if you

Bring your own food and grog and come and chill out on the beach, meet new people and discuss the days watersports. All families are welcome for no cover charge. Make sure to bring the dog too. Visit wightwaters.com for more information. Try fresh fish on the grill as an alternative to the traditional sausage!
If you love the taste of barbecued food but don’t fancy being the cook, why not visit Island Bistro at Sandown Airport. Many dishes are cooked outside on the ‘Spit-Fire BBQ’ to your liking. Choose from many specials such as Teriyaki chicken, smoked ribs and beef brisket. Check out opening hours online at eghn.org.uk No matter where you choose to eat alfresco, please make sure to take all rubbish away with you and recycle everything that you can. There is a great initiative of filling a carrier bag with rubbish each time you visit an Island beach, and some of the local cafés will give you a discount if you hand over your bag of rubbish you have collected. meet the producer Paul Thomas, The Tomato Stall What is the best thing about the Isle of Wight foodie scene? The sheer quality and diversity of products available.
What is your local tipple? It would have to be an Island ‘Bloody Mary’ made with the Isle of Wight Distillery Rock Sea Salt Vodka, Isle of Wight Tomato Juice and touch of Isle of Wight Garlic.
What is your favourite dish you cook using Isle of Wight Tomatoes? A simple tomato tart using puff pastry, a selection of heritage tomato varieties, sliced and layered on to the pastry base and topped with Isle of Wight Cheese Company Blue Slipper. Served with a simple green salad.

Where is your favourite place for a cuppa and a slice of something nice? It would have to be Quarr Abbey, such an amazing spot.
What is your favourite event on the Island? That’s really difficult to answer as there are so many great events but I particularly enjoy Cowes Week.

Summer on the Isle of Wight is the perfect time to tuck into some of the freshest and most locally sourced seafood, especially if the fish on the menu is sourced from the sea directly in front of you. ..
It’s a time when the Island’s eateries are showcasing their seafood platters, crab pasties have a queue all summer long and many people are even having a go at catching their own. Here’s our guide to where you can get your fill of seafood – and eat it! Do as the locals do and head to the towns where the fish are caught and landed. In Bembridge try the Island’s only floating café. The Best Dressed Crab is on a houseboat in Bembridge Harbour and the fish are landed right outside. Specialising in local lobster and crab, its seafood platters are legendary. thebestdressedcrabintown.co.uk
For those that fancy cooking at home, Captain Stan’s sell a large variety of species of fresh fish which are found in the waters around the Island. They also do a delivery service to mainland England and Wales for those that fancy a little taste of the Isle of Wight when they arrive home! bembridgefish.co.uk

Take a stroll (or boat) to Steephill Cove, the jewel in the crown of the Island’s seafood. Happily, the shed is recently licensed so you can now enjoy a glass of something bubbly with your pasty. steephillcove-isleofwight.co.uk

What is the one dish on your menu you keep coming back to? The seafood platter. It is full of the freshest, locally-caught seafood including local crab and lobster, prawns, crayfish as well as smoked mackerel and halibut.
Where is your favourite place for a cuppa and a slice of something nice?

I have been going to Chessell Pottery for years and am looking forward to visiting this summer as it has recently been taken over. They have always done such wonderful cakes and scones.
What is your favourite event on the Island? I always enjoy the bustle of Cowes Week (4-11 August), but I love the various walking events across the Island. The Highdown Inn is in such an excellent location for walking, we get booked up for most walking events.

Culture Club
Cafés and culture go hand in hand, so it’s hardly surprising that most historic and cultural attractions have a refreshment offering for the somewhat captive audience... However, the concept of a café within a historic building is actually relatively new. The world’s first museum café opened in London in 1856 in what was then the South Kensington Museum, now known worldwide as the V&A Museum. Today, you can hardly leave an attraction without entering the refreshment room (quickly followed by the gift shop!) but some of the cafés within these buildings are destinations in their own right. We’ve taken the time (and sampled) some of the Island’s heritage cafés, here are those not to be missed...
Quarr Abbey, home to a small group of Benedictine monks, is a must-stop when on the Island. Set in a 200 acre estate, you will find the historic abbey and ruins of the original, an art gallery, beautiful country walks, plus the abbey’s very own pigs to visit. The stunning setting provides a peaceful and tranquil place to explore with the whole family, including the dog. The Tea Shop is nestled in the picturesque walled gardens where you can sit outside amongst the nature and wildlife. The vast majority of the menu is grown on site, with chefs working closely with the gardening team to showcase what is the best of the season. Salads are freshly picked alongside vegetables and fruit which are taken directly from the plot. You can also sample the abbey’s own chutneys, preserves and honey - washed down with a glug of Quarr Abbey Ale. quarrabbey.org Quarr Abbey - perhaps the most local lunch on the Island!

this. Enjoy a range of hot and cold food plus there’s a fully licensed bar in operation offering locally produced cider and ales. Choose from daily homemade specials that make the most of the Island’s local produce. bradingromanvilla.org.uk
Enjoy a ‘Royal” cup of tea at Osborne. English Heritage owned, the Italianate former home to Queen Victoria is a sight to behold and certainly one of the jewels in the crown of the Isle of Wight. A star in the pudding-world – Osborne is associated with the Victoria Sponge, the Battenburg Cake, Beatrice Cakes and Osborne Pudding! Today, you can treat yourself to lunch or a high-tea (choose from four different types of Victoria Sponge) in the Terrace Restaurant, an ice-cream on Queen Victoria’s private beach, a snack in the Petty Officers’ Quarters or a quick bite from the Gazelle House in the royal children’s Swiss Cottage grounds. english-heritage.org.uk
The Forum Café is based at Brading Roman Villa. Set in rolling countryside, overlooking Sandown Bay, it is one of the finest Roman sites in the whole of the UK. Boasting stunning panoramic views of Sandown Bay, the café has a relaxed feeling, and you don’t have to enter the Villa to experience

Julia’s Tea Room at Dimbola Museum and Galleries is a real hidden gem. Situated in the former home of pioneering Victorian photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron, it’s full of eclectic charm. Expect tea to be served in mismatched vintage china, whilst an array of delicious homemade cakes, including the incredibly pretty gluten-free pistachio rose cake, are displayed temptingly on a long table. Take your tea in the pretty, sunny garden with views to Freshwater Bay and the sea. There’s usually an exhibition of local art in the tea room. In the main galleries you will find the beautiful Cameron photographs, as well as regularly changing exhibitions from both local and international photographers. dimbola.co.uk

The Wight Military and Heritage Museum in Northwood is home to a huge range of historic military and other exhibits. Boasting a mix of tanks, artefacts, military vehicles, small arms and a range of uniforms from the 19th century to the present day. Once you have seen it all, a visit to the on-site café is a must. Churchills is like stepping back into the 1940s with its decor and styling. Offering a range of light lunches and snacks, it also does a good line in cakes and cream teas.

meet the producer Natasha Boswell, The Garlic Farm What is the best thing about the Isle of Wight’s foodie scene? The Island has become home to some fantastic artisan producers. Nearly all food sectors are now represented, from fabulous meats and cheeses, artisan beers and spirits, quality fresh produce and excellent dairy products. Local food has never been so good.
What is your local tipple? I love the Isle of Wight Distillery’s Rock Sea Vodka in a Bloody Mary with a garlic twist!
What is your favourite dish you cook using garlic? Such a hard question to answer! It depends on the season, but right now it’s Elephant Garlic Scapes with Chorizo, which is a dish invented by my husband to make the most of these amazing fresh shoots from the Elephant Garlic plants.
Where is your favourite place for a cuppa and a slice of something nice?

CAFFE I S O L A
Caffe Isola has long been at the forefront of the Island’s artisan coffee scene...
Run by Dan Burgess and his Sicilian wife Viviana, the coffee bar was originally set up as a flagship outlet for their wholesale business, The I.O.W Espresso Co, which started out over 15 years ago.
The menu reflects the marriage of local produce with Viviana’s Sicilian heritage, offering paninis and traditional hand cut sandwiches, salads and soups and of course plenty of homemade cakes! An enhanced breakfast and kids menus and authentic Italian pasta specials will also be added. The gallery will house a retail area that will showcase some of the Islands great artisan cottage industry producers as well as,
of course, expanding on the company’s coffee equipment and education offerings. Customers will also be able to experience a smaller scale version of the roastery from green coffee preparation, through traditional drum roasting, to packing the finished product.

In 2010 they launched their Island Roasted brand commercially which can now be found all over the Island as well as on the mainland. 2018 has seen expansion into an exciting new site in Upper St James Street, Newport, an area which has become a real hub for local businesses. The former Beavis building, which was originally a church

Sun Down Glasses Up The Isle of Wight is home to some of the most magical, stunning sunsets you will ever see. When you add in a few drinks and some good company, you have all the makings of a top evening...
Page 128
Thanks to our miles of coastline, there are several places on the Island to catch a good view as the sun goes down. Here is our guide to the places that just pip the post to spend a simply beautiful evening‌
The great thing about being on the Island is if you get up high enough you’ll see the sunset bathing the hills and fields stretching out to the sea.
x t a s te o f th e w ig h t a Taste IW b / tast eoft hewight
The Hut’s terrace is a magical place to watch the sunset and the views aren’t half bad at moonlight either.
thehutcolwell.co.uk
If it’s too busy there, the neighbouring Longbeach Bar is always quieter but actually has a slightly better view across The Solent for a few seconds longer – thanks to sitting higher up Colwell Chine.
The Cow at Tapnell Farm run sunset parties throughout the summer months. Every Thursday, head along to one of the Summer Shindigs which feature live music and entertainment each week. The outdoor BBQ will be serving up tasty flame-grilled food or book a table in the restaurant. thecowco.com
On the north side of the Island, sunset searchers will be treated to spectacular skies across the New Forest towards Fawley Power Station, which actually makes for a pretty dramatic backdrop. Local pub, The Woodvale, has made the most of its vantage point with large windows and a raised outdoor seating area. hotelcowes.co.uk
Heading up high is always a good plan when chasing the sky. The Culver Haven Inn sits on its own, right up the top of Culver Down in Sandown. Choose the window with a view, or after dinner, sit in your car in the car park and watch the sun twinkle on the sea across towards Shanklin. culverhaven.com
If you are visiting the south of the Island, take a trip to Ventnor and The Royal Hotel. Book The Riviera Terrace, one of the finest alfresco eating spots on the Island. You can order an Isle of Wight picnic from the chefs, or enjoy pre-dinner drinks before heading over to the restaurant. royalhoteliow.co.uk Ventnor could be mistaken for somewhere in the Mediterranean here!

West is best, at least that is what they say when it comes to chasing sunsets. Take your pick from several places that offer a great vantage point as well as good food and drink. The Hut is renowned for its views. The sun sets right across the sea at Colwell Bay creating photo-worthy sunset shots, with views across to Hurst Castle. Sit outside or on warmer evenings, the sun-deck, where the roof opens automatically.
