DON'T MISS OUT ON! —

The Island is famed for an abundance of local produce, grown in our fertile soils, reared on our lush landscape or in our crystal waters. Here are our picks not to miss out on...

#1 TOMATOES

Page 10

You can actually taste the extra hours of sunshine that go into The Tomato Stall’s famous fayre. Tomatoes have been growing in the rich and fertile Arreton Valley for over 30 years. Each year, over 40 varieties are grown, from the hearty beef to the naturally sweet Piccolo. Buy from local farm shops including Brownrigg’s and Briddlesford Lodge Farm Shop.

#2 GARLIC

The folks over at The Garlic Farm have been growing the pungent bulb for over 50 years in Newchurch. What started out as a kitchen garden has grown to a large farm with many varieties of garlic available to buy. Visit the on-site restaurant to try some of the tastiest dishes (featuring garlic, naturally) or take home garlic products such as mayonnaise, butter and even ice cream! x taste o f th e w ig h t a Taste IW b / t a st eoft hewight Editorial_Dont Miss Out.indd 1

#3 CHEESE

Rich at Isle of Wight Cheese Co knows more about the stuff than Wallace of Wallace and Gromit fame. Having made cheese at Queen Bower Dairy since 2006, they have recently acquired the dairy and herd behind the multi-awardwinning cheeses. Pick up your favourite at the weekly farmers’ markets in Ryde and Newport, local farm shops or direct from the dairy.

Page 11

#4 CRAB

Seafood features heavily on plates across the Island, with crab being a top choice. Ventnor Haven Fishery is a great place to buy your freshly caught crab and the Blake family have been fishing these local waters for decades. The Crab Shed at Steephill Cove is so famed for serving up crab pasties, that they have a queue all day long.

#5 GIN

Well, after all that food, it’s nice to wash it down with a local tipple too. Mermaid Gin is the Isle of Wight Distillery’s first spirit and remains the most popular. Locally foraged rock samphire and elderflower, fresh citrus zest from Sicilian lemons and grains of paradise are complemented by Boadicea hops grown in the famous Ventnor Botanic Garden, all perfectly blended to create a unique flavour. Look out for their recently launched pink gin, infused with Isle of Wight strawberries. taste o f th e w ig h t.c o.uk Editorial_Dont Miss Out.indd 2

CAFFÉ ISOLA

At the forefront of the Island’s artisan coffee scene... The Burgess family opened Caffé Isola in 2004, as a flagship store for The I.O.W Espresso Co. In 2010 they launched their ‘Island Roasted Coffee’ which is stocked Islandwide and further afield. 2018 saw expansion into a new site in Upper St James Street, Newport. The former Beavis building, once a church lecture hall, became the perfect space to expand the artisan café and incorporate even more local retail products. The menu showcases local produce and is inspired by the family’s Sicilian heritage. Expect paninis, hand cut sandwiches, salads, pasta specials and plenty of homemade cakes! Caffé Isola is fully licensed and open in the evening for events and coffee courses. Upstairs you’ll find some of the Islands great cottage industry producers and their products. Soon, you will be able to experience a small scale version of the roastery – from green coffee preperation, to drum roasting and packing.

QUARR ABBEY

Page 16

Quarr Abbey has the perfect balance between field and fork, with parts of the Abbey’s 200 acre estate being worked to produce a huge array of food stuffs...

The style of growing here is definitely traditional and in keeping with the overall ethos of the Abbey – that you get back what you put in. Head Gardener Matthew Noyce takes this literally with traditional growing methods, nothing is artificially grown, nor are any pesticides used. This results in a far more labour intensive growing plan, but the taste and variety on offer make it all worthwhile. Following the traditional theme, much of the fruit and veg grown here are of a heritage variety, although they look anything but traditional! From purple carrots to the aptly named Turks Turban squash, heritage and legacy vegetables allow a range of flavours to be grown. The tea and farm shop sits within a beautifully maintained garden with the imposing Abbey creating a picture-perfect backdrop. Chefs work closely with the gardening team to create specials showing off what is on offer. Sharer’s boards are a favourite and it’s easy to see why. Using freshly picked salads and produce taken directly from the Abbey’s vegetable plot, with choices of meat, fish and ploughman’s, creating a delicious lunch for two. x@ taste o f th e w ig h t a@ Taste IW b/t a st eoft hewight Editorial_Dont Miss Out.indd 7 Spread_Jan19 V2.indd All Pages Quarr Abbey_TotW_Advertorial

The range of products in the farm shop that is either grown, made or farmed on the Abbey’s grounds is staggering. meet the chef Tom Bull, Head Chef, The Seaview Hotel, Restaurant and Bar What is the best thing about the Isle of Wight foodie scene? It has to be Living Larder. The vegetables they produce are amazing and so fresh – they get picked in the morning and delivered within hours!

What is the one dish on your menu you keep coming back to? Since I have taken over as Head Chef, the dish that I return again and again to is our hake dish with shellfish bisque, leek marmalade, confit tomatoes, samphire and fresh dill. I love it.

What is your local tipple? It has to be Mermaid Gin from the Isle of Wight Distillery. They have recently launched it in a new bottle too and it looks amazing.

Our Taste of the Wight outlet is designed to showcase a wide selection of the very best produce that the Island has to offer. We stock beer and ale from Island breweries. You can also pick-up local apple juice and cider, fruit wines, liqueurs and cordials during your time with us. The Isle of Wight is home to the largest garlic grower in the UK who produce a vast array of chutneys and relishes to compliment any dish, most of which we stock here at The Needles. Likewise, our southerly location makes for great chilli growing conditions and we’re proud to purvey ‘The House of Chilli’products, from chilli-infused sauces, chutneys and chocolates.

Coffee Culture

We love a good blackboard – PO41’s drinks offering!

Here at Taste HQ, we love a cup of coffee to get us through the day. It comes in many guises, from black to soya lattes and iced to espresso, plus everything in between!

Caffé Isola.

Can you even call yourself a coffee drinker if you haven’t visited Caffé Isola yet? This artisan café and roastery serves speciality coffee and freshly prepared food, plus they sell a wide range of coffee and tea equipment. Home to Island Roasted coffee this family business has been running for over 20 years. The staff are happy to share their expert knowledge and you can even sign up for some of their in-house training courses including home brew and barista training.

So yes, you could probably call us a bunch of coffee nerds and we wouldn’t argue. In fact, we would agree and urge you to read this guide to some of the best coffee shops on the Isle of Wight...

meet the producer Paul Thomas, The Tomato Stall What is the best thing about the Isle of Wight foodie scene? The sheer quality and diversity of products available. There are also some great venues on the island that champion local produce. We have put together a Tomato Trail on page34-35 of some of the best spots to eat and enjoy our tomatoes.

What is your local tipple? It would have to be an Island ‘Bloody Mary’ made with the Isle of Wight Distillery Rock Sea Salt Vodka, Isle of Wight Tomato Juice and touch of Isle of Wight Garlic.

What is your favourite dish you cook using Isle of Wight Tomatoes? A simple tomato tart using puff pastry, a selection of heritage tomato varieties, sliced and layered on to the pastry base and topped with Isle of Wight Cheese Company Blue Slipper. Served with a simple green salad.

It would have to be Quarr Abbey, such an amazing spot.

Page 37

Where is your favourite place for a cuppa and a slice of something nice?

What is your favourite event on the Island? That’s really difficult to answer as there are so many great events but I particularly enjoy Cowes Week.

Foodie Vacations

Page 38

There are plenty of places to stay here on the Island, many of which can combine a love of food and drink with the perfect setting for your foodie-break… A treat for all the senses, The Seaview Hotel Restaurant & Bar is a beautifully unique venue. Set in the picturesque sailing village of Seaview which has a distinctly nostalgic feel, the hotel is a mere hop, skip and a jump from the sea. So it should come as no surprise that seafood features heavily on the menu here, with dishes including stonebass in Madeira sauce or langoustine bisque. As well as the restaurant you will also find a ‘proper’ pub set inside the hotel. The Pump Bar has a laid-back atmosphere, with a wealth of local ales on tap and serving a traditional classic bar menu. seaviewhotel.co.uk

meet the fisherman Ed Blake, Ventnor Haven Fishery

What is the best thing about the Isle of Wight foodie scene? There is a real hunger for local produce, particularly from second-homeowners. With the recent emphasis on food miles, the Island is a brilliant example of what can be achieved in a small area.

What is your favourite dish you cook using local seafood? My favourite dish to cook is crab linguine. It’s incredibly easy to cook but has wow factor. Fry off some garlic and red pepper or chilli until cooked, mix through some cooked linguine (spaghetti works just as well). Take off the heat, add some cream cheese, then add 50/50 cooked crab meat, stir in some spinach and allow the residual heat to warm the crab through and wilt the spinach. Perfect.

Where is your favourite place to eat seafood on the Island? Page 44

Ventnor Haven Fishery supplies cafés and restaurants across the Island and they all do a fantastic job, but I still believe my mum cooks it the best. I suppose she’s had a bit of practice over the years!

What is your favourite event on the Island? There are plenty of fantastic parties on the Island, but my favourite event is one put on by nature. On certain summer evenings, the beaches on the south-west coast of the Island turn shimmering silver with whitebait. The mackerel herd the whitebait into foreshore until the waves chuck them up the beach and it provides one of the most beautiful sights you’ll see anywhere. If you’re lucky, you might spot a dolphin or two enjoying it as well.

meet the landlord Tim Green & Humphrey the pub dog, The Culver Haven Inn What is the best bit about being a landlord? The ever changing trends in the food and drink trade. I have worked in pubs for 28 years now and the whole industry has changed beyond all recognition. What is your favourite local tipple? The HMS Victory Gin from the Island Distillery. I love selling real ales but haven’t quite got the taste for them, but luckily my customers love them!

Burger Hunters The burger. It is such a simple concept, but packs a real punch when it comes to taste (and, unfortunately, calories) but it is a staple choice for many (come on, who hasn’t gone to a really fancy restaurant and just wished they could order a burger?)

Winner of numerous burger-related awards, The Cow Bar & Restaurant at Tapnell Farm is a must-visit. Choose from classic burgers to smoked or burgers with chorizo. Can’t choose between them all? Thankfully, the folks at The Cow have prepared for this dilemma with a burger sharing platter consisting of three small burgers and two sides. Delish.

On the menu at cafés, fine dining restaurants, bistros and everything in between, the humble burger is a ubiquitous, dependable dish. Here’s our round-up of some of the best places to get your fill…

Burger-lovers should flock to The Bargeman’s Rest in Newport, for the sheer amount of options available. You might have to factor in a fair bit of deciding time as you have a whopping 13 burgers to choose from! Try the Gourmet Burger made especially for them by a local butcher which includes three super-tasty cuts of beef.

Plastic-free We are all becoming more aware of the impact our habits can have on the planet... 320 million tonnes of plastic was produced globally in 2016 and this is set to double by 2034. Society’s addiction to plastic has come about largely due to making our lives more convenient. Food and drink on the go, takeaways, grabbing a coffee etc but convenience has a consequence.

Page 56

FF! LID O Save us!!

Caffé Isola are one of the list of businesses tackling plastic pollution. Left Clockwise: The impact single-use plastic has is lasting. Middle: Surfers Against Sewage‘s mission is to save our oceans. Right: Swap plastic straws for paper or don’t take one at all.

If you get as sad as we do when you see rubbish at the beach, why not take it away with you and help with the mission!

Simple changes in a business can make dramatic differences. Getting rid of sachets and offering condiments from bottles; eradicating plastic straws but having paper straws available (only if required) and offering alternatives such as glass bottles or cans.

A plastic bottle or coffee cup lid can last for 450 years in the marine environment, slowly fragmenting into smaller pieces which eventually end up microscopic, but never truly go away. This means that every piece of plastic that has ever been produced is still with us, in some form. Imagine if Queen Elizabeth 1 watched the Spanish Armada with a takeaway flat white in her hand, that cup and lid would still be floating in our seas!

There are some brilliant Island businesses doing their bit to tackle plastic pollution…

• Freshly laid duck, goose and chicken eggs • Freshly picked fruit and vegetables • Crab and lobster caught from Bembridge Ledge • Onsite smoker smoking pheasant, partridge, trout and salmon when in season • Milk, cream and cheeses from Briddlesford Farm and Isle of Wight Cheese Co.

When the sun is shining

The Spyglass Inn’s unbeatable location makes for the perfect suntrap.

There are certain spots on the Island that really seem to bloom and come into their own when the sun is shining brightly in the sky. Take your pick from these places where you can enjoy the great outdoors and soak up some vitamin D whilst you tuck in…

On a sunny day, there is little better than sitting with a cool drink, looking out over golden sands to a twinkling blue sea. You could easily think you have landed on a Greek island but in fact, Driftwood Beach Bar in Sandown does the job just as well! Sit outside on the large decked area and enjoy a cocktail from the extensive menu (we recommend the new Dark & Stormy). The menu features plenty of fresh seafood as well as light bites, breakfasts and kids’ choices. Want to make a night of it? Why not book one of the brand new party booths which seat 14 people? Watch the sun setting whilst listening to some live music. Absolute bliss. Any closer to the sea at The Spyglass Inn, you will need to have your cossie on! Locations don’t come much better than this – perched right above the sea at the end of Ventnor Esplanade, you can easily lose a couple of hours sitting on the terrace gazing out across the English Channel. Enjoy proper pub favourites coupled with fresh seafood landed just along the beach at Ventnor Haven Fishery, or just relax with a cold pint, many of which come from our local breweries.

Sit in the beautiful grounds and enjoy something from Quarr Abbey Tea and Farm Shop.

If you find yourself further inland, Quarr Abbey Tea and Farm Shop provide tasty, home-grown and home-cooked produce in stunning surrounds. Combine a trip to the historic abbey with a walk around the beautifully maintained grounds where you can feed the abbey’s own pigs before relaxing in the pretty tea garden. Here, you may get a visit from one of the friendly free-range chickens that roam around the garden.

You can dine right on the water at The Best Dressed Crab in Bembridge, the Island’s only floating restaurant. This houseboat-turnedseafood café is known for serving some of the best crab and lobster on the whole Island, caught mere metres away at Bembridge Ledge and surrounds. Served simply, the flavour speaks for itself. Sit outside and watch the boats go by in this working harbour.

For a pub where you can literally feel the sand between your toes, it has to be Fisherman’s Cottage at the bottom of the historic Shanklin Chine. This beautiful thatched pub sits right on the beach at Shanklin. Built in 1837, it has been welcoming fishermen and patrons for years. Grab a seat outside and you can watch the kids play on the golden sands, before tucking into a hearty meal of fish and chips. Made with the Fisherman’s secret recipe batter which features local Isle of Wight beer, it keeps many coming back for more. fishermanscottageshanklin.co.uk

VENTNOR BOTANIC GARDEN With its magnificent location in the Ventnor Undercliff, Ventnor Botanic Garden has an unparalleled collection of plants and regularly utilises these in its edulis restaurant... Head Chef Brad Roe, who has an AA Rosette Award to his name as well as 20 years working in Michelin star restaurants, can often be seen foraging both the nurseries and the garden itself, looking for unique salad leaves, edible flowers and new and exotic plants and micro herbs that he incorporates into the edulis menu, ‘edulis’ meaning ‘edible’ in Latin.

Try the garden’s own produce including chutneys, relishes, preserves, oyster mushrooms and salsa. If you like a beer, try an organic ale or lager, brewed using the varieties of hops grown in the garden.

Page 71

The dynamic pairing of Brad with the garden’s curator, Chris Kidd, marries fine dining with the creative use of garden-grown plants, from garden to table. Together they are continually adding new plants to the kitchen, exploring individual and combination flavours and creating new and exotic tastes. The garden has also introduced evening dining in edulis, comprising a series of themed tasting menus including Plant Based, Isle of Wight Produce, South American, Carnivore and Seafood.

The Plantation Room Café is open throughout the day from 10am until 5pm serving teas, barista coffee, homemade cakes and light lunches. Undercliff Drive, Ventnor PO38 1UL 01983 855397 botanic.co.uk

meet the forager Alex Richards, Forager, Island Wild Food What is the best thing about the Isle of Wight foodie scene? There’s lots of small unique companies on the Island doing amazing things and making some excellent local produce.

What is your favourite item to forage? That’s hard to answer as it depends on the season, but it would be elderflower or wild fennel in the summer, sea buckthorn or elderberries in autumn, sea beet in winter and wild garlic or nettles in spring.

What is your favourite dish to cook using foraged ingredients? I’ve got really into making nettle pancakes recently. I like them with my home-made foraged crab apple jelly or gorse flower syrup.

Page 74

Where is your favourite place to go out to eat on the Island? I usually like to eat outdoors at the beach or make something somewhere by the sea in my camper van. If I had to pick somewhere to buy food though, I’d say Wightwood Pizza van. Can’t beat a pizza on the beach at Freshwater Bay.

What is your favourite event on the Island? Rhythmtree Festival as it’s nice and small, with lots of friendly people and tasty food, but I do have to escape each day for a swim in the sea!

The cream tea has been a UK holidaymakers’ staple treat for decades and its popularity shows little signs of waning with plenty of options on offer. A good cream tea will keep people talking and coming back for more.

Dimbola Lodge – home to Julia’s Tea Room.

Here’s our round-up of some of the best places on the Isle of Wight… The Pearl Café is a real hidden gem (sorry) of a place. Prepare for some of the most breathtaking views on the Island as you sit down with your cream tea. Choose from a classic sweet or a savoury option served up with a slightly curryspiced chutney that is out of this world. iowpearl.com Julia’s Tea Room is housed in the iconic Dimbola, the former home of Julia Margaret Cameron, one of the most important early photographers and a pioneer of photography as an art form.

The cream teas and cakes here are legendary. Enjoy them in the cosy tea room, once the salon of Julia Margaret Cameron and where she entertained guests, or in the pretty, sunny garden with views to Freshwater Bay and the sea. dimbola.co.uk Enjoy a cream tea in a traditional country pub setting at The Highdown Inn. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the Tennyson Trail, it’s the perfect stop-off for walkers and cyclists who have worked up an appetite. Take your cream tea at the bar or in the adjoining restaurant and when the sun is out, the garden is perfect to relax in. highdowninn.com Make like celebrity chef James Martin and visit Bluebells Café at Briddlesford Lodge Farm Shop. He recently popped in whilst filming the popular ‘James Martin’s Great British Adventure’. Enjoy home-made scones, served with their very own golden Briddlesford butter plus raspberry and loganberry jam from The Fruit Bowl in Newchurch. The part that makes it really special is adding their own clotted cream made in the Bluebells’ kitchen with the cream from the awardwinning herd of Guernsey cows. Couple this with a refreshing pot of breakfast tea, served with Briddlesford milk (naturally).

Vegan Island

Page 78

From the garden to the plate – Ventnor Botanic Garden.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you cannot have missed the rise of veganism into the mainstream eating trends.... Gone are the days when vegan eating was restricted to in the ‘middle of a field at a slightly off the wall festival’. These days, your local pub is as likely to serve a few vegan choices as having roasted peanuts behind the bar. With a fantastic, just launched vegan menu, The Anchor in Cowes is a great place to visit. One of the most popular pubs in Cowes, it’s famed for its laid-back vibe, live music and now, its varied menu. Try dishes such as sizzling spicy fajitas as recommended by the chef. theanchorcowes.co.uk

Tansy’s Pantry, Godshill will blow your mind with tasty, completely vegan, food.

A new restaurant, devoted solely to vegan food and drink, opened its doors just this spring. From the people behind Tansy’s Pantry (a lovely green double-decker bus full of vegan treats and tastiness, a regular feature at events and festivals across the Island) set in the heart of Godshill, it is fast gaining a must-visit reputation. Try the spicy chickpea and lentil dahl or the mouth-watering clementine chocolate orange cake. tansyspantry.co.uk

For pub grub, places such as The Sun Inn, Calbourne, The Waterfront, Totland and The Steamer Inn, Shanklin all offer a wide range of meat and dairy-free home-made dishes, plus puddings too. The Quay Arts Café (quayarts.org/cafe) has a new chef and guess what, he’s vegan. Their usual veggie-friendly menu has been even further uplifted with all sorts of savoury delights and the hot chocolate even includes dairy-free whipped cream!

The Anchor, Cowes have their own vegan menu as well as specials.

What is the best thing about the Isle of Wight foodie scene? It’s the diversity and quality of the food available here. We are punching above our weight with a really unique food empire.

What is the one dish on your menu you keep coming back to? I love my 12 different curries – beef and horseradish and Malay, a spicy chicken curry, are amongst my favourites.

Where is your favourite place to eat on the Island? The Seaview Hotel Restaurant. The food is great and then I love popping into the pub there, The Pump Bar for a beer after.

Lazy Sunday Afternoon

One of the nation’s most-loved dishes, the Sunday roast is synonymous with family – it’s a time for everyone to get together, share stories of the week gone by and look to the week ahead. From casual pubs to high-end restaurants, the roast dinner is one of the most important dishes on the menu… In the heart of the pretty village of Shorwell, The Crown Inn is a great place to take the whole family for a roast dinner. If the weather is fine, the garden really comes into its own with a freshwater trout stream and duck sanctuary, plus a play area for the kids. Inside, you will find a cosy and traditional pub, complete with its very own resident ghost. As for the roast itself, there are usually several meats, including a locallysourced option and a veggie choice. characterinns.co.uk

The Crown Inn, Shorwell, the perfect spot for a roast.

Combine a river walk with a tasty roast at The Breeze Restaurant. Set in Island Harbour Marina, you can sit outside on the large terrace and watch the boats bobbing about with some ambient live music in the background. Kids can play on the outdoor play area with climbing frames and swings. There are plenty of choices for your dinner with sirloin of beef, lamb and turkey regularly on the menu, plus nut roast too. Super hungry? Why not upgrade to the extra-large meal? island-harbour.co.uk

Here, you can have two roast dinners plus a carafe of either house red or white wine for just £30. The Yorkshire pudding alone is worth booking for! artisanbars.co.uk

If it’s a roast with a view you are after, then look no further than The Culver Haven Inn. Perched at the very top of Culver Down, look towards the cliffs of Shanklin in one direction and down towards Whitecliff Bay in the other. If you are bringing your four-legged friend, dogs will be welcomed by resident pub-dog Humphrey. culverhaven.com

The Chequers Inn, Rookley has been serving up roast dinners for decades. A real family-friendly pub in the heart of some of the Island’s most stunning countryside, you can enjoy the popular carvery every Sunday. Pooch Perfect

Page 112

The Island is a paradise for dogs (and their owners) with plenty of beautiful walks, places to explore, designated dog-friendly beaches and a whole host of places to take pooch out for a slap-up meal… The Buddle Inn, Niton, is one of the most dog-friendly pubs on the Island. Here you will find a mini-menu for your four-legged friend featuring Oscar and Pet’s Bistro food and treats. On the menu for owners, there is plenty of local produce and seasonal specials. Afterwards, you will also find a lovely walk right opposite, down to St Catherine’s Lighthouse and Castlehaven. characterinns.co.uk

The Sun Inn, Calbourne, goes above and beyond to make your four-legged friends feel at home.

sun-calbourne.co.uk

Take your dog to meet The Cow at Tapnell Farm. Dogs are welcomed in the restaurant with treats and water bowls, as well as blankets and cushions to keep them comfy. Whilst they are being looked after, you can tuck into some delicious dishes including steaks, burgers and some classic restaurant favourites.

Page 113

After a spot of sightseeing along Winkle Street, The Sun Inn, Calbourne, is the perfect pit stop for tired legs. Dogs are warmly greeted by the landlord and resident pub-dog, with a dogfriendly menu and blankets for cold or wet doggies. You can relax with a bite to eat and a glass of something nice.

thecowco.com

For a dog’s dinner with a difference, Off The Rails in Yarmouth is the place to go. Walk the old railway line before settling down in the converted station building with a bite for you and one for the dog too. Puddings are not limited to just human customers either, thanks to the range of Billy + Margot dog ice creams on offer. offtherailsyarmouth.co.uk

Dogs are welcome at the popular Seaview Hotel situated in this pretty seaside village. Although not allowed in the main restaurant, they are welcome in both The Pump Bar and The Naval Mess. When the sun is shining, take your tea outside to the terrace and look out towards Seagrove beach – where dogs are allowed all year round. So with so many dog-friendly places to choose from, bring the dog along too.
