HAV E N ST R E E T STAT I O N Our main station, Havenstreet is a restored 1940s station where all the fun and magic happens. Facilities here include Train Story Discovery Centre, museum, locomotive and carriage and wagon workshops, a well-stocked gift shop and our refreshment rooms. It’s also home to Haven Falconry Bird of Prey Centre. See pages 6-7 for full details.
WO OTTON STATION Hop aboard at Wootton station. Here you will find a recreation of an Edwardian country terminus station complete with waiting room, ticket office and toilets. When the sun is shining, make the most of the picnic area or take a short walk up the road to the country pub, or along the route of the former railway line towards Whippingham station.

SMA LLBROOK JUN CTION STATION Step off at Smallbrook Junction, where steam meets electric. It is here that Island Line trains link to Havenstreet. There is no access to this station other than by train. The station itself was built by the former Network SouthEast in the early 1990s and the building, designed to replicate a traditional Southern Railway station, was completed in 2012. There is a ticket office, waiting room and eco toilet.
AS H E Y STATI O N Trains call by request at Ashey station. Its beautiful rural location makes it the perfect spot for a country walk or relaxing picnic. You can see the site of the Ashey Racecourse where traditional horse racing takes place occasionally, including the famous annual ‘Ashey Scurry’, when a special train service is in operation.

DI S COVERY CE NT RE Hop along to Train Story Discovery Centre and ďŹ nd our dressing up boxes! Step inside our award-winning interactive Train Story Discovery Centre where the magic of the steam engine comes alive. Experience the sights, sounds and atmosphere of railways gone by. Inside, you will find displays of our Victorian and Edwardian carriages and some of our rare rolling stock, all preserved from the elements, allowing us 8
more time to spend on restoring other historic vehicles. They aren’t shut behind glass though – in fact, if they are unlocked, then step aboard for a closer inspection. Kids will love dressing up as drivers and guards and re-enacting stories from the past. Follow the timeline detailing the history of steam railways through to the modern day electric line and find out why May Joyce is such an important person to the history of railways on the Island. BR BLACK Saturday 25 – Monday 27 May
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s 2019 Spring Gala will focus on those locomotives which carry British Railways’ black livery. ‘BR Black’ will be held over three days, from Saturday 25 until Monday 27 May. Three steam locomotives and one diesel are expected to see action throughout the weekend, operating an intensive timetable which will include three different passenger sets together with a representative engineers’ train from the early 1960s. Star of the show will doubtless be W24 Calbourne. This sole surviving Adams O2 Class locomotive is the Steam Railway’s flagship. She was built at the Nine Elms works of the London & South Western Railway in 1891. Some 23 members of the class were shipped to the Island between 1923 and 1949 but sadly only Calbourne survived the cutter’s torch. This will be the final year in
12
which W24 Calbourne will be seen in BR black. After her next heavy overhaul, expected to start later this year, Calbourne will emerge in the popular Southern Railway malachite green livery with sunshine lettering. Operating alongside Calbourne will be Ivatt 2MT Class locomotives 41298 and 41313. Built at Crewe during the early-1950s, both locomotives had relatively short working lives before being withdrawn as steam gave way to diesel and electric traction during the mid-1960s. 41298 was sold from service directly into the ownership of the Ivatt Locomotive Trust whilst 41313 languished in the infamous Barry scrapyard until also being purchased by the Trust, initially for spares. After a spell at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre both locomotives were generously gifted to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and both restored to service. Built in 1959 at Doncaster, BR black Class 03 D2059 is also expected to make an appearance. This diesel mechanical shunter arrived on the Island in 1988, having been purchased primarily to work engineers’ trains, although the locomotive can haul passenger trains if required. During our ‘BR Black’ event, D2059 is expected to haul our four black ballast hoppers and ‘Shark’ brake van in which visitors may be able to ride. With four locomotives, an intensive timetable and three trains in service there should be plenty to keep everyone occupied.

B E HIND T HE S CE NE S A peek inside the Carriage & Wagon Department
See behind the scenes in our carriage and wagon workshop with our improved viewing gallery where you can watch our skilled coach painters, carpenters and fitters at work restoring, overhauling and maintaining a range of vehicles dating from the early-1860s. See the carriages being stripped back to their inner skeleton and rebuilt with new materials while keeping as many of the original parts as possible. Watch the transformation of a retired railway carriage that once was a holiday chalet being returned to its former glory as a railway vehicle again. Admire the fitters undertaking exams, testing and mechanical work on passenger carriages, historic wagons and engineers’ wagons on the pit outside the carriage and wagon workshop. You may be able to see them replacing brake blocks or adjusting the working components of the underframes. Come and talk to our skilled craftsmen about the vehicle on which they are working, find out about the work completed and what is still to do. Please ask about volunteering with the team and becoming part of a group of enthusiastic, dedicated people from all walks of life who have a passion to restore and operate historic railway vehicles from the Island’s steam age. 15
