ISTANBUL’S HISTORY BREAKS THE SURFACE “ISTANBUL’S HIDDEN SHIPS” EXHIBITION BY NECATI BADEM AT NAKKAŞ ART GALLERY MAY 17- JULY 17

Necati Bayram has been working on reviving the sunken ships found during Marmaray excavations for two years.

Recently on May 17, he has started to welcome artlovers to his ceramic exhibition called “ Hidden Ships of Istanbul” at Nakkaş Art Gallery , Sultanahmet.

Until July 17, you may have a time voyage through Istanbul’s hidden ships and discover the details of thousands of years ago.

In 2005 , during the excavation of Marmaray ( the world’s deepest immersed tube tunnel project) Theodosius Harbour was found. It was an archeological breaking news because ship wrecks dated back to 5th -11 th cent. B.C have been brought to the light of day and it was discovered that Istanbul’s history went further beyond that it had been known before. Necati Badem inspired by these ships that witnessed history ,presents a time voyage through the 8500 years of Istanbul.

This exhibitions helps the minds that quest who contribute in the shaping of the culture of Istanbul where has been the homeland of main ancient civilizations.

Necati Badem has made thousands of broken- stiffed amphoras and collected objects from antic cities, seas, rivers, mountains. He, as if has molded nature and history in ceramic.

22 pieces of art , measurements vary between 19x53 – 15x37 exhibited at Nakkaş Art Gallery promises a mystical journey in Anatolia. Theodosius, Constantinople, Troy, Yenikapı, Harem, Cappadocia, Urla are some example names of the art objects. In addition , artist names after some of his works of art as Rembrandt, Osman Hamdi Bey ,Van Gogh and with his interpretations of colors, he salutes these famous painters.

İSTANBUL’UN TARİHİ SU ÜSTÜNE ÇIKIYOR ‘İSTANBUL’UN SAKLI GEMİLERİ’ SERAMİK SERGİSİ NAKKAŞ SANAT GALERİSİ’NDE

Yaklaşık iki yıl süren çalışmaları sonucu Marmaray metro kazılarından çıkarılan batıkları yeniden canlandıran Necati Badem’in “İstanbul’un Saklı Gemileri” Seramik Sergisi 17 Mayıs’ta kapılarını sanatseverlere açtı. Sultanahmet Nakkaş Art Gallery’ de açılan sergi 17 Temmuz’a kadar görülebilecek. Sergide yer alan İstanbul’un saklı gemileri ile zamanda yolculuk yapacak, tarihi, kültürü, sanatı ve doğayı içinizde yaşayacaksınız.

2005 yılında İstanbul metrosu Yenikapı kazı alanında yüzlerce yıl toprağın altında kalmış Theodosius Limanı bulundu. Dünya kültür tarihi açısından son derece önemli olan limanda M.Ö. 5. ila 11. yüzyıllar arasına tarihlenen Yenikapı’nın eski gemileri gün ışığına çıkarıldı. Geçmişe tanıklık eden bu gemilerden ilham alan Necati Badem’in “İstanbul’un Saklı Gemileri” Seramik Sergisi 17 Temmuz’a kadar Nakkaş Sanat Galerisi’nde kâşifleri bekliyor.

Necati Badem, uygarlığın doğduğu eşsiz Anadolu Coğrafyasını ve üç büyük medeniyete başkentlik yapmış, adeta sonsuz geçmişten sonsuz geleceğe yol almakta olan 8500 yıllık tarihini, bıraktığı ayak izleriyle kanıtlamış, dünyanın en eski şehri İstanbul’umuzu ne kadar tanıyor, üzerinde nasıl yaşıyoruz sorusuna

cevap arayanlar için eserleri ile tarihi bir yolculuk tasarlıyor. İki yılda binlerce kırık - sağlam anforalar yapan Necati Badem antik şehirlerden, denizden, derelerden, topladığı objelerle adeta doğayı ve tarihi seramikle yoğuruyor.

Boyutları 19x53 ile 15x37 cm arasında değişen 22 eser, sanatseverleri Anadolu coğrafyasında gizemli bir yolculuğa çıkaracak. Theodosius, Constantinople, Truva, Yenikapı, Harem, Kapadokya, Urla eserlerden birkaçının ismi... Sanatçı, Rembrandt, Osman Hamdi Bey ve Van Gogh gibi ünlü ressamlara da isimlerini taşıyan eserlerle, kullandığı renk ve yorumlarla selam göndermeyi unutmamış.

The third Istanbul Shopping Fest to be held this year in Istanbul which is one of the most attractive cities in Europe combines fun and shopping.

The festival will be full of discounts and promotions of the most prestigious brands as well as concerts and cheerful activities between 8th and 30th of June.Istanbul Shopping Fest will be commenced with great “Festival march” on Istiklal Street on June 8th. Giant shopping malls and streets of Istanbul participating the festival will contribute to the festival enthusiasm with entertaining organizations and surprises.

Shopping Malls will be open until 11:00 pm at Friday and Saturday nights for shoppers during the whole

BREAKING THE FAST IN İSTANBUL Iftar-the breaking of the fast-is truly something else in İstanbul. Iftar in İstanbul is sharing. It is joy; it is one of the loveliest ways to give thanks.

Ramazan’da akrabalar dostlar birbirine gitmeli muhabbetin musikisi Allah kelamı ile hayat bulmalıdır.

Akşam sahura kalkınca ev halkı yapacakları iftara göre daha sade bir yemek yer. Minarelerden bir ezan sesi duyulmakta ve artık oruç başladı.

Uyanılan sabah Ramazandır.

Ramazanın günü akşama yaklaşmakta. Gün boyu yemeyen içmeyen insanlarda yorgunluklarına karşılık beklenmeyen bir telaş bir heyecan. Bir kısmı teravih namazını kılmak için daha iftar gelmeden Eyüp Sultan, Ayasofya ya da Sultan Ahmet Camii’nde yer bulmaya çalışıyor.

Bir kısmı evdeki büyük ziyafetin hayaliyle iftariyelik alışverişinde.

Kurulan sergilerin ürün yelpazesi oldukça geniştir. Baharattan şekerlemelere, Erzurum taşından öd ağacına kadar bütün ürünleri barındıran sergi, bayrama hazırlanan İstanbul’u kendine çekmekte.

Osmanlı sarayına dönüp de bakarsak Ramazanın manevî atmosferini orada da solumaktayız. Öyleki Ramazan’ın ağırlığı bürokrasinin simgeselliğine bile etki etmekte. Mesela padişahlar her Ramazan ayında on yeniçeriye bir büyük tepsi baklava yaptırırdı. Yeniçeri ocağına gönderilen bu baklavaları eğer yeniçeriler yönetimden memnunsalar afiyetle yerler ve saraya boş tepsileri gönderirlerdi.

Eğer yönetimden memnun değilseler baklavaları yemeden tepsileri dolu bir şekilde saraya geri gönderirlerdi.

Asr-ı Saadet’le karşılaştırıldığı zaman aslında hiç bir şey mükemmel değildi. Ancak modern çağda yaşayan bizler o günlere dair övgü dolu sözlere sahibiz. Benlik kaygılarıyla, özgürleştirmek adına yalnızlaştırdığımız hayatımızda, Ramazanlar kendisini bir yük gibi hissetmekte. Kendisiyle az muhatap olmak için elinden geldiğince geç uyanmak isteyenlerle yaşıyor Ramazan artık. Akşama kadar asık bir surata sahiptirler evsahipleri, nereden geldin der gibi. FATHER’S DAY History of Father’s Day Festival as seen today is not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work and struggle of Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington that just as we have set aside Mother’s Day to honor mothers we have a day to acknowledge the important role played by the father.

However, some scholars opine that Father’s Day history is much older than we actually believe it to be.

They say that the custom of honoring dad’s on a special day is over 4,000 years old.

There are a few more claims about the Father’s Day origin.

EARLIEST HISTORY OF FATHER’S DAY Scholars believe that the origin of Father’s Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be.

Rather they claim that the tradition of Father’s Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. They have recorded that

a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago.

Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life. Though there is no record of what happened to Elmesu and his father but the tradition of celebrating Father’s Day remained in several countries all over the world.

HISTORY OF FATHER’S DAY IN US Modern version of Father’s Day celebration originated in United States of America and thereafter the tradition spread in countries around the world.

The world owes thanks to Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washington as it is because of her struggle that Father’s Day saw the light of the day.

The idea of Father’s Day celebration originated in Sonora’s mind when she per chance listened to Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the age 27, Sonora pondered if there is a

day to honor mother then why not for father? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran.

Sonora’s mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care.

Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis’s struggle to promote Mother’s Day, Ms Dodd began a rigorous campaign to celebrate Father’s Day in US. The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) supported Sonora’s cause. As a result Spokane celebrated its first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea gained gradual popularity all over US and Fathers Day came to be celebrated in cities across the country. Looking at the heightened popularity of Father’s Day in US, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Father’s Day in 1924 to, “establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children

and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations”. After a protracted struggle of over four decades, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd was honored for her contribution at the World’s Fair in Spokane in 1974.

Mrs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96.

FATHER’S DAY: CONTROVERSY AND COMMERCIALISM During the 1920s and 1930s, a movement arose to scrap Mother’s Day and Father’s Day altogether in favor of a single holiday, Parents’ Day. Every year on Mother’s Day, pro-Parents’ Day groups rallied in New York City’s Central Park–a public reminder, said Parents’ Day activist and radio performer Robert Spere, “that both parents should be loved and respected together.” Paradoxically, however, the Depression derailed this effort to combine and de-commercialize

By the end of the war, Father’s Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national institution.

Babalar Günü’nün tarihçesi, 1900’lü yıllara dayanıyor.

Amerika’nın Washington kentinde yaşayan ve bir Amerikan İç Savaş gazisinin kızı olan Sonoro Smat Dodd, 1909 yılında, 6 kardeşi ile birlikte kendilerini tek başına büyüten babasını mutlu edebilmek için özel bir gün bulmaya çalıştı. En küçük kardeşini doğururken hayatını kaybeden annesinden sonra Anneler Günü’nü kutlayamayan Dodd, Babalar Günü’nün neden olmadığını sorgulamaya başladı.

Bu araştırmacılar Batı Virginia’da yaşayan John Dowdy’nin annesi öldükten sonra onun yerini alan babası için böyle bir gün kutlanmasını istediğini söylüyor.

Diğer araştırmacılar ise, 1910 yılında Washington’daki John Bruce Dodd’un 6. Çocuğunun doğumu sırasında hayatını kaybeden annesinin ardından hayatını çocuklarına adayan babası William Smart’a özel bir gün armağan etmek amacıyla bu fikri ortaya attığını belirtiyorlar. Küçük yaşta annesini kaybeden Dodd’u ve beş kardeşini,

babaları William Jackson Smart büyütmüş. Babasının bir yandan çiftlikte çalışıp öte yandan altı çocuğa bakmasının zorluklarını farkeden Dodd, anneler günü kutlanırken babalar gününün olmayışını büyük bir haksızlık olarak nitelendirmiş.

Hemen babasının doğum günü olan 5 Haziran’ın babalar günü ilan edilmesi için çalışmalara başlamış. Ama bu çalışmalar bir sonraki yılın 19 Mayıs’ına kadar sürmüş. Babalar Günü ilk kez 19 Haziran 1910’da Washington’ın Spokane şehrinde kutlanmıştır.

Bu tarihten sonra ABD’nin diğer eyaletlerine yayılmıştır. Ancak Babalar Günü resmi olarak 1924 yılında Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Başkanı Calvin Coolidge’in desteğiyle kutlandı.

1966 yılında ise o dönemin başkanı Lyndon Johnson, her yıl haziran ayının üçüncü pazar gününün Babalar günü olarak kutlayacağını açıklayan bir bildiri yayınladı. Katoliklerin Babalar Günü’ne getirdikleri yorum ise diğer araştırmacılardan çok farklı. Onlar bu kutlamayı dini açıdan ele alıp Peygamberleri Hazreti İsa’nın babası anısına, Mart ayının 19’unu St. Joseph Günü adı altında babalarına armağan ediyorlar. Ülkemizde 80’li yılların sonlarına doğru kabul gören Babalar Günü, bu yıl da Haziran ayının üçüncü pazarına denk gelen 19 Haziran’da kutlanıyor. Bu sene 16 Haziran Pazar gününe gelen Babalar Günü, ülkemizde de her yıl olduğu gibi Babalar Günü hediyeleri ile ve

çiçeklerle kutlanacak.

SERVET SENEM UĞURLU Mimar Sinan University Lecturer Mimar Sinan Üniveristesi Öğretim Görevlisi Anatolian Rugs are the textile objects that Turks have created in visual arts.The value of Turkish Rugs vowen by different Turkish tribes have not been realized until modern times.Even it has been known that Turks have only miniature in terms of visual arts through history.Rugs vowen by yörüks and Türkmens called as “Bisat” and “Berced” in Ottoman times.

They used to be underestimated and categorized as simple public artisan objects. These rugs were simply woven and they are called Cicim, Sumak, Zili. Traditionally they are used as pillows, belts, bags.

You can not find the name of the person who has woven the rug but one can understand the identity of the person,his/her family/time tracing the style and colors on the rug. This art has a deep roots in Anatolia and the

In rural areas , rugs woven by young women before marriage were not be shown before her engagement, just before the marriage ceremony these works of her used to be exhibited.

Western Cultures started to understand the real values of

Turkish Rugs and evaluated them in the approach of Modern Art. Different from the GoblenTapestry of the west which can be determined asa the equivalent objects to Turkish Rugs,figures on Turkish Rugs are stylized with geometrical symbolic motives.

Locust: Prosperity, heroism, power and masculanity. Most used motif. Horn represents power of man. Also used in combination with spirals and crescents. Woman with hand on hip represents fertility, welfare and motherhood.

Tree of Life: Communicates between earth and heaven. Represents immortality. On fiarköy rugs, birds on the tree represent soul and life.

Abundance: Sex, fertility, things about man and women. Used in forms of melons, pomegrante, berries, figs, wheat, hashish. Also from animals: snakes, bull, deer, butterflies, fish...

Hand, Finger and Comb: Hand motifs symbolize creativity and power. In Anatolian rugs it’s used for fertility and prosperity.

Evil eye: Commonly used in the form of triangle.

Eye: In forms of triangle, rectangle, cross and star.

Hook: Used commonly. For the purpose of eliminating evil eye.

Snake and Dragon: Snake is for protection, immortality and life. Snakes in Anatolian rugs is said to be Dragon.

Watercourse: Water, rebirth, physical and emotional resurrection, bourgeoisie, wisdom and virtue.

Water is the key to physical purification. Mostly used in Agean and Medittteranian region rugs.

nadolu kilimleri, Türklerin göçebelik döneminden bu yana, görsel sanat alanında oluşturdukları tekstil objeleridir. Yörük ve Türkmenlerin estetik duygularını bir tablo yaparcasına, dokudukları kilimlerin, sanatsal ve resimsel değeri yakın dönemlere kadar anlaşılmadı.

Hatta “Türklerde minyatür dışında resim sanatı yoktur” aşağılaması yaygınlaştırıldı. Osmanlı döneminde, saray ağzında “Bisat”, “Berced” adı altında toplanan, Göçebe, Yörük ve Türkmenlerin dokuduğu, havsız kirkitli dokuma (düz dokuma), kilim ve çeşitlerine, önemsiz, değersiz, kaba Halk Sanatı işleri diye bakılmıştı.

Havsız kirkitli dokumalar olarak bilinen, Kilim, Cicim, Sumak, Zili çeşitleridir. Kilimlerin geleneksel kullanımı; beşik, önlük, yastık, yaygı, çuval, kemer, heybe ve çeşitli örtülere uzanan, çok geniş alanlarda ve çok çeşitlidir. Anadolu kilimlerinde dokuyucu adı yoktur. dokumalar, kişisel düzenleme ve aşiret kimliğiyle, geleneksel renk uyumu öne çıkarılarak estetik, sanatsal anlayış ve alışkanlıklarla oluşturulmuştur.

Dokuma geleneği yaygınlaşmış olan Anadolu’da, dokumacılığın özgünlüğü ve zorluğu, “Kilim işi kimin işi?” , “Halı dokumak usta işi, kilim dokumak deli işi, şal dokumak ise ermiş işidir” gibi tekerlemelerle vurgulanmıştır. Kırsal kesimde, kızların dokudukları “çeyizlik kilimler” kimseye gösterilmez ancak düğün sırasındaki “çeyiz sergisi”nde, günümüz resim sergileri niteliğinde sergilenirdi.

Batılıların 18. yy.da vardığı “Modern Sanat” beğenisi ile Batılı sanatseverler, asırlar boyunca geleneksel değerler ve alışkanlıklarla yapılmış göçebe Yörük ve Türkmen kilimlerindeki estetik ve gerçek sanatsal değerleri anlamış ve incelemişlerdir. Batı ülkelerinde kilim benzeri Goblen-Tapestry olarak bilinen dokumalarda, figüratif resim öğeleri ve perspektif gibi aldatmacalar

yapılırken, Anadolu kilimleri; perspektif kullanılmadan yüzey değerlendirmeye dayalı, tamamen stilize edilmiş ve çoğunlukla geometrik formda sembolik motifler ile oluşturulmuştur.

Havsız kirkitli dokumalara başlarken, motiflerin yerlerini tespit etmek zordur.

Ancak motif ve motif gruplarının oluşturduğu desen kompozisyonu belirli düzende dokunmaktadır. Bu dokumalarda genellikle simetrik motifler kullanılmıştır. Motifin tasarım özelliğine göre ilikli ve iliksiz kilimler vardır. Kilimlerde kullanılan motifler, dokuyucunun yaşadığı bölge ve aşiretlere göre değişmesine karşın, belirli motifler her tür kilimde kullanılmıştır

Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational or speech therapy

treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement as part of an integrated treatment program to achieve functional outcomes. In hippotherapy - which is named for the Greek word for horse, “hippos” - the patient engages in activities on the horse that are enjoyable, challenging and effective.

Children and Horses: PONY CLUB TJK established Pony Club in order to introduce the love of horses to children.

With their small bodies and cute movements, ponies achieve this goal of TJK very naturally. It is worth to see the relationship of ponies and children. Children learn to respect the other creatures of nature at the same time they devolop many important physical skills.

MÜZE VE SERGİ SALONU “TÜRK KÜLTÜRÜNDE AT VE ATÇILIK” Kuruluşunun 50. yılı etkinlikleri kapsamında “Türk kültüründe at ve atçılık” temalı müze ve sergi salonu, kulübün kurumsal tarihi ve geleneğini yansıtan belge ve objelerin de eklenmesiyle 21 Haziran 2000’de yeniden düzenlenerek ziyarete açılmış. Şimdilerde de daha modern şekilde dizayn edilmek üzere çalışmalara başlanmış.

Bunların yanı sıra Avrupa sanatında oldukça önemli bir yere sahip olan Ziem ve Harpignies’nin yağlıboya tabloları, Türk resim sanatının önemli ressamlarından Hikmet Onat, Saip Tuna imzalı çalışmalar ve geleneksel olarak düzenlenen resim yarışmalarında ödül alan eserler bulunmakta.

TJK Veliefendi hipodromunda yapılan etkinliklerden bir diğeri de unutulmaz konserler.

Türkiye’den ve dünyadan kitlelerin beğenisini kazanmış başarılı sanatçıları İstanbullular ile buluşturan TJK, geçtiğimiz yıl Madonna ve Jennifer Lopez gibi ünlülerle yaptığı düetlerle tanınan rapçi Flo Rida‘yı Türk hayranlarıyla buluşturdu. Türkiye Jokey Kulübü tarafından düzenlenen Uluslararası Yarış Festivali kapsamında Veliefendi Hipodrumu’nda sahneye çıkan rapçiyi yaklaşık 30 bin kişi izledi.

AT & İNSAN DOSTLUĞUNUN ŞİFACI GÜCÜ HİPOTERAPİ İnsanlarla en iyi iletişim kurabilen hayvanlardan biri olan atlar, hipoterapi (atla terapi) yöntemiyle zihinsel ve bedensel engellilerin tedavisinde yardımcı olarak kullanılıyor.

RAMADAN PITA, JUST FOR RAMADAN Ramadan has its own delicacies, Many savory and sweet options that are not available during the rest of the year appear on tables as a symbol of the abundance of this month. Warm Ramadan pita bread is the symbol of the rich iftar feast tables.

ll the Muslims over the world celebrate this special spiritual festival of “ Ramadan”. It is one such festival that forces one to truly evaluate and purify all aspects of one’s life. This festival is so special that it helps to bring together family and friends. During this occasion , the food that the Muslims eat is light, nutritious meals that contain a lot of fresh fruits , vegetables and halal meats. Many types of food can be prepared and with so many Muslims all over the world celebrating this holy festival there are different varieties. The Whole Wheat Pita Bread is one such food that is famous in all Muslim houses during this special holy season. It is indeed perfect for those of you who are looking to add more more wheat ingredients to your diet. This bread has both white and wheat flour and is really simple to make.

TO GET STARTED YOU NEED : Warm Water- 21/2 cups Dry Yeast- 11/2 spoon Honey- I tsp Wheat Flour- 2 cups Purpose Flour-3 cups vegetable Oil- 1 tsp Salt to taste Directions:- You have to first dissolve the yeast in warm water . Add honey to it and stir. Afetr about 10 to 15 minutes the water will begin to froth. Now in a separate bowl, you have to mix the wheat flour and the white flour along with the salt for taste. After you mix the flour continuously, make a small depression in the middle and pour the yeast water. Now add in some warm yeast water and stir with a wooden spoon preferably until you see the dough becoming elastic. Knead the dough till it becomes smooth and elastic.

In a large bowl of vegetable oil , place the dough so that it is covered in the oil. Cover it and let it stay for about 3 hours. Let it be

in a warm place until it has doubled in size.

Once you see that the dough is doubled , roll out in a rope and pinch out 10 to 12 pieces. Now roll out the dough into circles with a rolling pin, onto a floured surface.

Make sure that each piece is about 5 to 6 inches across and ¼ inches thick. In a n oven of 500 degree C, bake the circled shaped dough for 4 minutes till it puffs up.

Like wise turn over the dough and bake again for 2 minutes. After it baked, remove the pita with a wooden spatula and gently push down the puff and ploace in the storage bag. To keep the Pita Bread for a longer time, you have to store it well in a proper place so that you can keep it longer and it will stay fresh every time you grab a bite. It can be stored for a month too if you keep it in a freezer bag and place it in the refrigerator.

Ramazan boyunca yumuşacık “Ramazan Pideleri”de boy gösterecek, üstelik iki çeşit: Pastahane pidesi - Fırın Pidesi.

Fırınlar sürekli kontrol altındaydı.

Eksik gramajlı ekmek çıkaranlara ihtar, para, falaka hatta fırının önünde kulağından mıhlanma gibi çok ağır cezalar veriliyordu. Asker, kamu görevlileri ve fakir halkın yediği ekmeğin genel adı “Fodla” idi. Ama, XV. yüzyılda, Fatih’in mutfağında,

padişaha sunulmak üzere hazırlanan ekmek çeşitleri ağzımızı sulandırıyor.

Fırın Böreği, yumurtalı börek, ıspanaklı pide, peynirli pide, pide-i harsa (ıspanaklı ve peynirli), susamlı ekmek, sütlü ekmek gibi. İmparatorluğun her döneminde ekmek, yiyecekler içinde baş köşeyi hiç terketmedi. Parası olan has undan yapılmış, beyaz kepeksiz ekmeği yedi, fakir fukaranın ekmeğine hep darı, arpa karıştı. İstanbul’a XVIII. yüzyılda gelen, örf ve adetlerimiz üzerine çok geniş bilgiler içeren bir kitap yazan D’Ohsson’un en fazla beğendiği ekmek, yassı ve yuvarlak olan “pide”dir.

Diğer bir çeşit ise yuvarlak, siyah ve ağır olan “somun”. Evin efendisi için pide, hizmetkarlar için somun satın alınır.

Aynı devirde, bir üçüncü ekmek cinsi ortaya çıkar ki 1950’li yıllarda bile varlığını sürdürmekte

idi. Tamamen has beyaz undan yapılan ve kendine has kokusu ile tanınan, çocukluğumun unutulmaz lezzetlerinden biri Francala.

Son yıllarda Hemşin’in, Trabzon’un lezzetli ekmekleri taş fırın ekmekleri olarak şehrimizi istila ediverdi.

En çok Ramazan ayında, onun dışında kebapçılarda severek yediğimiz bir cins ekmek daha var: Pide. Mayalı hamurdan yapılan, yuvarlak biçimli yassı bir cins ekmek.

Pidesiz bir iftar sofrası düşünülemez.

Sıcacık, yumuşacık, üzerindeki çörekotları mis gibi kokan pide genelde üzerine yumurta sürmeden pişiriliyor. İstanbul’da hemen her mahallenin meşhur bir pide fırını vardır.

In order to help the families who have lost their loved ones in the Soma mining disaster of May 13, music lovers who purchase tickets within the 10 TL and 500 TL categories from Biletix will all be donating for this cause. For those who have already purchased their tickets prior to the organisation of this aid fund, will be able to get full refund on their tickets if they so wish.

Müzikseverler, Biletix’te 10 TL ile 500 TL arasında oluşturulan kategorilerden satın alacakları biletlerle Soma maden ocağı felaketinde hayatını kaybeden işçilerin ailelerine ve yakınlarına bağışta bulunabilecekler.

Yukarıda belirtilen etkinlikler için bugüne kadar satılan biletlerin gelirleri bu bağışa dahil edilecek olup biletlerini daha önceden satın almış müzikseverler ise istedikleri takdirde bilet iadesi yapabileceklerdir.

ATTRACTIONS CISTERNS Binbirdirek Cistern Binbirdirek Cistern (The Cistern of a thousand and one Pillars) Binbirdirek Mah. İmran Öktem Sk. Sultanahmet Square Tel: 0212 518 10 01 Every day 09.00-20.00 Binbirdirek cistern, the second biggest water reservoir of İstanbul was built in the 4th century.

Senator Philoxenus built his palace on the Hippodrome and built this cistern in order to meet the water needs of the palace.

The German voyager R. Lubenau, who visited İstanbul in the 16th century, reported that there were thread workers working in the cistern. However, there are also others that claim that the cistern contained water in the 18th century. As there had not been water in the cistern for a long time, it was used by thread workerss as a workshop in the 19th century.

Some of the arches were pierced and openings that let light inside were opened. Binbirdirek Cistern is surrounded with a thick wall and its dimensions are 64, by 56 by 40 m. The brackets, each of which has 16 lines of 14 pillars with a space of 3.75 m between are joined with arches. The pillars and heads were designed for this cistern and they were not collected from other structures. The arches on the heads are joined with opposite stretchers.

Only the round holes on them can be seen today. The name of the cistern in the Turkish era may have come from the words “a thousand and one” which represented multiplicity. However, some people claim that these words may apply also to the overlapped pillar bodies. The lower sections of the pillars are buried in the ground to about 5 meters. The total height of the brackets is 12.5 meters. The eighteen holes on the left side of the entrance of the cistern were filled in at somem point in time.

The Yerebatan Basilica Cistern Yerebatan Cad. Sultanahmet Tel: 0212 522 12 59 Everyday: 09.00 - 17.30 This is the biggest and most spectacular cistern in the city. The

cistern’s entrance is in the small building to the west of Hagia Sophia. The ceiling of the cistern, which looks like a forest of pillars, is covered with bricks and crosswise arches. It was named the Basilica Cistern because of a basilica which used to be in the vicinity. It was built during the reign of Justinanus the 1st (527-565) to provide water to the palaces in the vicinity. The pillars are decorated with some plain and Corinthian-style pillar heads. There are 336 pillars in 12 rows of 28 pillars, and their dimensions are 170 x 70 meters.

The level of water changed in accordance with the changes in the seasons. Water was distributed outside through pipes on different levels on the eastern wall. The marks left by different levels of water can be seen on the pillars.

The floor was cleaned during the big restoration of 1984, unearthing from one meter of mud the original floor of bricks and marble blocks with the figure of Medusa’s head.

The Maiden’s Tower whose history dates back to the 4th century BC constitutes an important part of the silhouette of İstanbul. When it became necessary to lighten the small rock at the entrance of the Bosporus, a tower and lighthouse was built here. Although it was also used for other purposes, the tower had always been used as a lighthouse. When the empire was told that his daughter was going to die as a result of snakebite, locked his daughter in this tower in fear and his daughter died after being bitten by a snake hidden in the fruit basket sent by the prince. This is the most common legend about the tower.

Beyazıt Tower In 1749, during the Ottoman period, the tower was built by the architect, Kirkor Balyan, who finished his education in L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It holds the distinction of being the first fire observing tower. The tower was built by Hüseyin Ağa and has been called “Harik Kiosk” or “Harik Tower.” The word “harik” means fire. The performers in the tower are called “köşklü, köşlü, or dideban.” During the march of insurgents, the wooden tower was set on fire by the Janissaries. The tower was rebuilt on the same site in 1828 out of stone by Senekerim Balyan, the brother of the architect Kirkor Balyan under the command of Sultan Mahmut II. The height of the tower measures 85 meters, And the tower has a wooden staircase of 256 steps.

COLUMNS The Theodosis Obelisk The two obelisks were erected in front of the Karnak temple in Luxor by the Pharaoh of Egypt, Tutmosis the 3rd in 1490 B.C. for the victories Egypt won in Mesopotamia. The obelisks were made of pink granite of a rare quality. A Roman emperor whose identity is not precisely known, brought an obelisk weighing many tons to Constantinople in the 4th century. The obelisk, which lay on one side of the Hippodrome for years, was erected with difficulties in 390 by one of the governors of the city, Proclus, during the reign of Theodosius the 1st. The artwork, which has always been considered to be “enchanted,” is the oldest in İstanbul. The obelisk stands on 4 bronze blocks on a Roman pedestal decorated with embossed figures.

The Serpent Column This is one of the oldest pieces of art in İstanbul. The heads of 3

snakes entwined with each other formed the feet of a cauldron.

The thirty-one Greek cities that defeated the Persians in the 5th century B.C. melted the bronze trophies they acquired and constructed this artwork of unique trophies they acquired and constructed this artwork of unique quality. One piece of the snake heads which were lost in the 17th century is exhibited in the Museum of Archaeology in İstanbul.

The Masonry Obelisk The imitation obelisk, which is built with carved stones, is situated on the southern side of the Hippodrome. The date of its construction is not precisely known. It is commemorated with the name of Emperor Constantine Porfiregeneteus who had the obelisk repaired in the 10th century. The bronze sheets which used to cover it were stolen by the Crusaders.

MOSQUES Süleymaniye Imperial Mosque The mosque of Süleyman the Magnificent, where he and his wife, Hürrem Sultan (Roxelane), are buried, is considered the most beatiful of all imperial mosque in İstanbul. It was build between 1550 and 1557 by the famous architect Sinan whose wish was to surpass the buliders of St. Sophia.

Erected on the crest of a hill, it is conspicious from its great size, emphasized by the four minarets rising one from each corner of the courtyard. Inside, the mihrab (prayer niche showing thr direction to Mecca) and the mimber (pulpit) are of finely carved white marble, and there are fine stained glass windows. Adjoining the mosque were theological school of medicine, a soup kitchen and hospice forthe poor, a caravanserai and a Turkish bath.

Mosque The mosque of Sultan Ahmet I (r.1603-30) is the work of architect Sedefkar Mehmed Agha, Popularly know as the “Blue Mosque” in view of its more than 20.000 glazed reventment tiles patterned in blue.A classical structure of excellent workmanship, the mosque was built in 1609-16 and, measuring 72x64, it is the only mosque with six minarets.

The interior of the mosque is flooded with light, thanks to the aesthetically pleasing placement of its 260 windows.

Rüstem Paşa Mosque Another skillfull accomplishment of the architect Sinan, this mosque was built in 1561 on the orders of Rüstem Paşa, Grand Vezir and son in-law of Süleyman the magnificient. The exquisite interior is covered with some of the finest examples of İznik tiles.

Imperial Fatih Mosque This imperial mosque, constructed

between 1463 and 1470, bears the name of the conqueror of İstanbul, Fatih Sultan Mehmet and is the site of his mausoleum. Standing on top of one the hills of İstanbul, it is ontable for its vast size and the great complex of religious buildings surrounding it. Theolgical schools, hospices, a hospital, baths, a caravanserai and a library.

Yeni Mosque Built between 1597 and 1663, this mosque, located at Eminönü, is one of the best known sights of İstanbul. An elegant fountain for ritual ablutions stands in the large courtyard and the sultan’s section is decorated with marvelous İznik tiles.

Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Mosque This 16 th-century mosque, contructed on the slope of a hill below Sultanahmet Square, is one of the most beautiful examples of classical Turkish architecture and is a masterpiece of the architect Sinan. The pulpit and prayer niches are of special interest being covered with beautiful İznik tiles.

It was built in Germany and installed in İstanbul in 1898. The fountain was built in the Neo-Byzantine style and decorated with golden mosaics inside.

'PVOUBJO PG "INFU *** This fountain was built in 1729 by the Grand Vizier Damat İbrahim Paşa upon the command of Sultan Ahmet III to acknowledge the public service of his mother Rabia Emetullah Gülnüş Sultan. The fountain, which was designed as a square, has four sides with oval corners. There are sharp arched niches on all sides and it is covered with a wide wooden roof.

Tophane Fountain Tophane Fountain is located in Tophane, on the European side of Istanbul.It is built bey Sultan Mahmut I in .1732.It is the third biggest fountain of Istanbul and it has the highest walls.The epigraph belongs to Nafihi and the fountain is called I Mahmut Han Fountain.

It is surrounded by Kilic Ali Pasa Mosque, Nusretiye Mosque and embankments. It is now far from the coast of Marmara Sea ,as the sea was filled by the time. Four side of the fountain are the same as each other, arcitechually.

Azapkapı Sokullu Fountain While the fountains built by Sultans Ahmet III and Mahmut I had a plain rectangular shape, that built shortly after by Saliha Valide Hatun, the Queen Mother, was characterized by a more elaborate design and by an elegant sebil. It is usually named after nearby Azap Kapi Camii, although some sources still refer to it as Saliha Sultan Cesmesi.

The Spice Bazaar, the second biggest closed bazaar of Ä°stanbul, was commissioned by Turhan Sultan between 1663 and 1664 as a part of the Yeni Cami KĂźlliyesi (series of buildings) which consisted of a mosque, a line of shops, a tomb, two fountains, and a school. It is behind the New Mosque near the Flower Bazaar in EminĂśnĂź. One line of the “Lâ€? which is about 120 meters long stretches perpendicular to the mosque and the other line stretches parallel to the mosque for 150 meters. There are 46 stores (23 on one side and 23 on the other side) in the long line and 36 stores (18 on one side and 18 on the other side) in the short line. There are also 6 iwans and 88 stores in the joint which makes 88 stores in total.

This number has reached 105 now. The square in the middle of the joint of the two lines is called the prayer square and there is also an azan platform built there. The construction of the New Mosque, whose construction took the longest (60 years) in the history of the Ottoman Empire, was started by Mimar KazÄąm AÄ&#x;a. The Imperial Head Architect Mustafa AÄ&#x;a completed the construction. Rubble, stone blocks and bricks were used in the construction of the bazaar. It was named the Valide Bazaar when it was first founded but it was named the MÄąsÄąr ÇarĹ&#x;ÄąsÄą (“the Egyptian Bazaar,â€? but due to the many

The Grand Bazaar The Grand Bazaar is the oldest and biggest closed bazaar of the world in the center of the city of Ä°stanbul. The Grand Bazaar was founded in 1461.

Like an enormous labyrinth, it is a spectacular and unique part of Ä°stanbul with 60 streets and over 3600 stores in an area of 30,700 square meters.

This site, which resembles a city, has grown and developed over time. It now includes five mosques, seven fountains, one stream, one public fountain, eighteen gates and forty public houses. Many streets named after occupations such as Altuncular, AynacÄąlar, BasmacÄąlar, ÇuhacÄąhanÄą, Fesçiler, HalÄącÄąlar, Ä°plikçiler, KalpakçĹlar, KĂźrkçßler, Terlikçiler, Terziler and YaÄ&#x;lÄąkçĹlar and many others used to be in this bazaar but only their names exist now.

The bazaar was heavily damaged in two big fires that occured in 161 and 1940. It took its final shape after the restoration done by the Municipality of İstanbul in 1940. The bazaar has six gates, some of which are not used today.

The two main gates of the Spice Bazaar provide a connection between EminĂśnĂź and Sultanhamam. The side gates open to the New Mosque, Tahtakale, Mercan, YemiĹ&#x; Ä°skelesi and SĂźpĂźrgeciler. The Spice Bazaar was designated for herb sellers and quilt makers at first but the number of herb sellers decreased, particularly in the 1970’s, and these were replaced by jewelers, dried fruit sellers, drapers and other stores. Despite all these, it is a big bazaar where dry plants, various herbs, and hundreds of different spices to cure all problems have been sold throughout

its history. The curative herbs of Anatolia have been distributed all over the world through the Spice Bazaar, despite the “fast food� habits, energy drinks and food with additives which are becoming more and more widespread.

MahmutpaĹ&#x;a MahmutpaĹ&#x;a Bazaar was commissioned in 1762 by Veli Mahmud PaĹ&#x;a, a grand vizier of Fatih Sultan Mehmet.

The kßlliye included a mosque named after the grand vizier, a tomb, a public house, a bathhouse, a madrasah, a soup kitchen and a children’s school.

There are 256 stores in the bazaar in this kĂźlliye. There are also a tomb built in the name of Mahmud PaĹ&#x;a (1473), a public fountain, a bathhouse, and other fountains in the bazaar. The bazaar, where all types of clothes are sold, is particularly crowded when people are shopping for the school season or festivals. Economical prices offered in MahmutpaĹ&#x;a make poor people happy.
