F UNDAMENTALS OF DESIGN & ACCLIMATION AND SCALED MODEL WORKSHOP Born from the basic form of a cube and using different processes of transformation and moulding, one principal volume and 3 secondary units were developed around the concept of creating a housing proposal for students that enables living in community -by hinting a suggestive circulation path-

but maintaining independence as

well.

Espira La Espora Cultural Centre Location: Monserrat, Managua, Nicaragua. In Collaboration With: Espira La Espora's Board of Directors. Espira La Espora is a non-profit organization based in Nicaragua. Its associates are visual artists and cultural ambassadors from the Central-American region. Espira develops artistic education programs and cultural activites with a OILOFTROP

focus on context. They aim to place art among the culture of a place, making it a matter of everyday nature.

Taking in consideration that Espira La Espora is an organization that promotes contemporary art among a society that is not familiar with it, this proposal for a cultural centre searches to tackle barriers between pedestrians and artists by

showcasing contemporary art on the exteriors of the building through built-in niches. This intention of making art more approachable to human contact is a direct result of setting to remain true with the organization's vision and philosophy. The continuation of the public circulation into the surroundings of the different buildings is a further action proposed to invite pedestrians inside the centre as a way of invitation.

B IOCLIMATIC ARCHITECTURE Starting with an initial volume for a housing project, a thermal analysis (supported data provided by Autodesk FormIt software) was done to analyze the heat temperatures reached in each of the facades of the house. Different periods of the year were considered to record an average temperature in the tropical weather. Through experimentation in materials selection, orientation, volume transformation and the implementation of design strategies, a final volume resulted with changes in the temperatures recorded.

C OMMERCIAL DESIGN WORKSHOP Raices, a nicaraguan handcrafted-shoes store, is on the search of reaching more consumers by participating in pop-up fairs. By working along the owner of Raices we were able to recompile valuable information that allowed us to create an object that reflects not only the brand's concept but also the young entrepeneur's vision for her brand.

Raices Container Pop-Up Store Location: In Collaboration With: Workshop # 12:

Las Colinas, Managua, Nicaragua.

Martha Garcia and Valery Juarez (BARCH students).

Intersection of Pyramid - Prism The design for the container store results from the concept of opening the store in half and inviting pedestrians to walk along a showroom hall that displays the products. The interior design looks to evoke the personality of their target customer, a "young, intellectual and traveler" person.

A RCHITECTURAL DIGITAL WORKSHOP II BIM Model of a tower that follows parameters based on experimentation of mass and its resulting forms. The tower was also designed around a vertical central axis that functions as the vertical circulation core and its structural central line. A repetition of the designed hexagonal curtain-wall panel is what encloses the tower, making the mass-like form readable from the outside.

NSTITUTIONAL DESIGN WORKSHOP This bus station for the town of San Juan del Sur, Rivas, Nicaragua, emerges from the analysis of how circulation (pedestrians, vehicles and bycycles) should flow on the site, avoiding traffic jams and confusion. The station's horizontal and discrete volume results from this flow, with two main facades that work as a "welcome" and "goodbye" screens. The only element that disrupts its regularity - a bay viewpoint- was added to state the obvious: welcome to the port town of San Juan del Sur.

E DUCATION, CULTURE AND SPORTS DESIGN WORKSHOP To develop MUMENI, or Museo de la Memoria de Nicaragua (Memory Museum of Nicaragua), my partner and I started the process by designing our own architecture studio. The studio was created based on an ideology and principles that comprise our views on architecture. Just as any real studio would do, we pitched our economic offer to "the client" through physical means that would project the essence of our studio.

Economic Offer - GJ Estudio de Arquitectura In Collaboration With: Valery Juarez Leiva (BARCH student). GJ GUTIERREZ - JUAREZ Estudio de Arquitectura is a nicaraguan studio founded by the young architects Valery Juarez and Ivania Gutierrez. Focused on the core of architecture - users - GJ aims to attend clients' needs in terms of functionality and provide the added value of user's experience design. By being aware of the impact architecture has on its users, GJ studio hopes to achieve architecture that becomes a positive change tool on its surrounding area. GJ studio shows deep interest in respecting the sense of belonging each project has, whether it being to the society or the site of the project.

MUMENI, a museum dedicated to the twentieth-century history of Nicaragua, should be based mostly on its sense of belonging to the nicaraguan people and its culture. Based on the nature of the project, the Economic Offer was presented in media that transmits the essence of nicaraguan architecture: earth-related colors, wood and craftsmanship.

E DUCATION, CULTURE AND SPORTS DESIGN WORKSHOP How do you tell the history of a country that has been marked by numerous events of catastrophe, death, disasters and scarcity? MUMEMI is born from the idea of providing a place where reflection and awareness is fostered, rather than focusing on the open wounds of the catastrophic history.

MUMENI In Collaboration With:

Valery Juarez Leiva (BARCH student).

By creating "pauses", which are transition spaces between the exposition galleries, the museum gives its users the opportunity to reflect on what is learned in previous galleries, discuss with fellows and prepare the mind to what continues. These "pauses", which are four different in total, are designed to instill emotions according to the period of history; sometimes making the transition lighter and peaceful, sometimes making it nerve-racking. Each of the pauses' phenomenology is based on distinctive use of color, materials, light and space dimensions.

E DUCATION, CULTURE AND SPORTS DESIGN WORKSHOP One last space was created at the end of the exhibition galleries' path: a Reflection Garden. The position of the garden makes it almost mandatory for users to experience a spot of peace at the shore of Managua's Lake. The garden's landscape design intends to give closure to the museum experience by creating an atmosphere that encourages the absorption of information.

Eco-Lodge Madera Beach, Rivas, Nicaragua.

Natasha Campbell Waters and Valery Juarez Leiva (BARCH students).

The eco-lodge follows a philosophy of respecting the environment and minimizing its presence on the site. Hence, the design of the cabins as well as the rest of the buildings was thought out to start their living process (construction) by using naturally-extracted materials from the site, like wood and natural fibers (straw). The use of pile foundations allows the standard cabin to adapt to the irregular land and avoids major changes in the land.

Previously existing trees are being kept in the site, assuring the direct contact of users with wildlife and

Volume study of ten different forms for the NALI Boutique Hotel, in Managua, Nicaragua. All variations were proposed according to previously selected parameters, which focused mostly on multi-faced forms, openings to the inside and outside, stacking and angular perspective view points.

10 Volume Study - NALI Boutique Hotel Material: Green Styrofoam Blocks

OILOFTROP

NALI Boutique Hotel Location: Historic Center of Managua, Nicaragua. In Collaboration With: Adriana Lopez Abdalah (BARCH student).

IMGO

NALI Boutique Hotel starts with the volume experimentation. The core idea is to conceive a volume with a disposition on the site that will allow users to understand from the outside a building offering various activities in its program.

Form itself was set to be the element that transmited a sense of

dynamism, reason why block forms and towers were avoided from the beginning. The intention behind the experimentation through form was to achieve a multiple-faced building that remained connected at different levels.

T OURISM DESIGN WORKSHOP A boutique hotel located inside the Historic Center of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Based on its important position, the hotel is developed around the idea of attracting 21st-century users to an area that is desperately needing dynamism. Hence, the profile of target guests is that of young adults who are hungry for experiences, interactions with locals and involvement in the daily makings of an unknown city.

NALI Boutique Hotel Location: Historic Center of Managua, Nicaragua. In Collaboration With: Adriana Lopez Abdalah (BARCH student). NALI Boutique Hotel focuses on bolstering the guests' experience in one of the city's most iconic reference points through the creation of a continous relationship between natural spaces and built paths. The dissemination from interior to exterior -and viceversa- is done through the "raccord", a series of spaces that just like in cinematography intend to create continous shots even if a linear narrative is lacking. The purpose of the proposed path is to present the users with a dynamic itinerary, while also making the hotel to be understood as a whole.
