Welcome to this year’s International Youth Arts Festival which, believe it or not, is on an even larger scale than last year’s. In addition to theatre, dance and music, a short film festival will be organised and managed by young people. There will be street theatre, circus performers, big tops, processions, music, dance and poetry performances; the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames will be brought to life amidst a carnival atmosphere. This is the third Festival organised by Creative Youth. This charity works throughout the year to enable young people to realise their potential through the arts. It also provides training and mentoring opportunities so that young people can learn the business skills to work within the arts.
It is through this Festival and other projects that Creative Youth is able to give young people the chance to perform, as well as to gain experience as event managers, producers, creators and innovators. The young people involved are thereby given the best possible opportunities to enjoy a future and a successful career in and outside of the arts. Over the years I have been amazed at how rapidly this Festival has grown and have been heartened at the positive impact it has had on the Royal Borough. It is a real testament to all involved with Creative Youth and those who support the charity and the Festival to see how much the locally grown and nurtured talent has improved. Thank you for that ongoing support and enthusiasm and I hope that you will enjoy this year’s spectacular programme.

The Youth Theatre Company is the most advanced branch of training for young people in The Gaiety School of Acting, Ireland’s National Theatre School. Members develop their theatre skills in a company environment and many go on to work professionally in theatre. This original play, a sell out when it opened in Dublin in 2010, tells the stories of 3 girls plucked from fairytales and faced with situations where no prince will save them. But they do not need to be saved; following a dark night of the soul each girl finds her own way. Brilliantly charged with music, colour and pace this play is, as one reviewer says “a highly energetic production that builds to several cacophonous crescendos.”

Pants on Fire is a London based theatre company dedicated to creating new, exciting, innovative theatre. Their show ‘Ovid’s Metamorphoses’ premiered at IYAF 2010 before its sell out success at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it won ‘Best of Edinburgh’, transferring it to New York. The Fumidor tells a cautionary tale of misplaced morality, hypocrisy, the dangers of excess and the search for love. The terrifying legend of a murderer convinces a small town that they should become radically sin-free. When a stranger comes to town, the facade of these pure and chaste inhabitants begins to crack revealing their terrible dark secret. A darkly comic fairy tale brought to vivid and colourful life with puppetry, film and live original music.

The Creative Talent programme identifies young and emerging artists and organisations who have the potential to become excellent creative practitioners and gives them the artistic, business and strategic support to become flourishing, challenging, exciting organisations of the future. The programme provides year long support and encourages the artists to push their boundaries, create new work and work in collaboration with other organisations to create inter-disciplinary work as well as developing and mentoring their core skills and products. Importantly Creative Youth works in partnership with one of its principal sponsors, HSBC, to ensure that these young companies are equipped with key business skills allowing them to turn their visions into commercial ventures ensuring that the arts continue to prosper and be a fundamental part of the future of Britain. Through Creative Talent we are investing in the future of the arts and putting our faith in the young people who will inspire future generations. The five key companies that Creative Talent is supporting are:
Continuing support...
Our Fri.ds Rec/ds Our Friends Records are a Kingston based music promotions company who have been working with Creative Youth since the first festival in 2009. Creative Youth is delighted to have secured funding allowing OFR to attend consultation and shadowing sessions with world-renowned festival programmers, Continental Drifts, through which they have learned some top skills and tricks of the trade. This once in a lifetime opportunity has enabled Creative Youth to almost fully hand over all music programming to OFR and this year there is likely to be over 200 bands booked during the 18 day festival – a challenge OFR are ready to take on! “Creative Youth has been the engine behind the growth of Our Friends Records, allowing us to explore our capabilities as promoters and engineers and giving us the chance to prove to ourselves and to Kingston that we can work with the pressure of such a massive event. We would certainly not be the company we are today without the support of Creative Youth and we are so excited about the future!” Tim, Miles & Liam, Our Friends Records

Circus Suburbia are a dynamic, young, contemporary circus company providing high quality entertainment at events and festivals as well as circus training, workshops and community engagement. Creative Youth began working with Circus Suburbia in 2010 when Arts Council England funding allowed them to co-ordinate a community circus show performed for the finale of IYAF. The recent funding from The Foyle Foundation has funded the research and development of their first company professional circus show which will be presented at The Little Bird Festival on the 17th July to close IYAF 2011. This will mean the company has a product which they can continue to tour throughout the UK and internationally in the future – helping stabilise and secure their financial and artistic future.

JOHN LEWIS PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION, CAPTURE KINGSTON CELEBRATING JOHN LEWIS, A PLACE TO EAT Fri 1 July - Sun 17 July Festivals, feasts, pageants and processions all feature in Kingston’s 800-year Royal History, but how do we celebrate in the 21st century? This summer Kingston Art Team and John Lewis Kingston want you to capture Kingston in celebratory mood, by photographing some of the events and activities taking place in your community and on the river during July and August. As London prepares for the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, what are the inspirations and influences that determine how we celebrate today? To get the creative juices flowing Kingston Art Team has selected some evocative images from Kingston Museum’s Archives which will be on display in The Place To Eat restaurant, John Lewis Kingston from mid June onwards. Selected entries will be exhibited in the The Place To Eat, from 5 September. Prizes will be awarded to the overall winner, runner up and under 16s entry. Unframed A3 photographic prints will only be accepted and should be handed in to John Lewis’ Gift List Department, with your name, age, email address and telephone number clearly marked on a label on the reverse of the print. Submissions can be handed in from Monday 27th June to Friday 19th August. For any enquiries please email fusionarts@blueyonder.co.uk and visit www.fusionartsstudios.co.uk
Our imaginations are unique and it is this creative force that allows us to put our mark on the world full of fantasy, mysteries and possibilities, which we are trying to capture with this exhibition. The broad approach of the theme means the possibilities of thoughts are limitless and allow complete freedom for the artist from desires, dreams, wishes right down to the absurd and surreal. The exhibition is the idea of textile designer Zoe Thomas, and has been made possible with the support of Andy Hoang who is an e-learning advisor, blogger and postal fanatic at www.myrealwall.com. The use of social media has allowed for artists to be reached far and wide around the globe, which contrasts beautifully with the simple notion of sending an individually designed postcard through the post. The exhibition is also online at www.schoolswaps.net and is growing as each postcard is received. For details of how to submit artwork for either exhibition please visit www. iyafestival.org.uk.

Transformation: a 40x40 exhibition is a 2 ½ week exhibition presenting the work by university artists who explore and encapsulate the theme of Transformation. The exhibition will take place in the hub of Kingston Market, the newly transformed Market House which has been converted from being a place for public punishment and mayoral offices into an exhibition space. Outside in the Market Place there have been stalls selling produce for over 800 years which have also transformed dramatically throughout the ages..
Fri 1 July – Sat 16 July Open Tue - Fri 12-6pm; Sat 12-4pm. Thu 7 July
5 - 7pm *special event to celebrate completed drawing and film.
The Hogsmill riverbank, immortalised in Millais’ famous painting of Ophelia, becomes the focus of two special visual arts projects for IYAF 2011. The Blue Bridge that crosses the Hogsmill at Springfield Road provides hundreds of small frames or windows onto the river-view beyond. Working with artist Peter S Smith, local primary school children from St John’s School have each recorded an individual ‘window’, drawn with charcoal on paper, and pieced them together to make an actual-sized collective drawing of the view seen through the bridge itself. The Stanley Picker Gallery is hosting a series of workshops for young people who are creating a floating artwork to be sent down the Hogsmill from the Gallery, under the Blue Bridge, and onwards to the Rose Theatre. A film of their resulting River Adventure will be shown at the Gallery alongside the children’s drawings. Why not come along and create your own drawing to help build our View through a Bridge? Thursday 7 July 5pm-8pm: Special event to celebrate the finished drawing and film. All welcome!

Tom C@mArs “I am delighted and proud to be a patron of the International Youth Arts Festival. For over a year now I have had the honour of being a supporter of the charity that has helped and mentored the work of talented young people in a range of the Arts. I am really looking forward to what promises to be a spectacular programme in 2011.”
MaB Lucа “Having spent my early years working with both the National Youth Music Theatre and the NYT, I know the value and excitement of being allowed to create and perform in the company of other like-minded young people. Clearly the International Youth Arts Festival has got off to a flying start and has a hugely promising future. I am honoured to have been invited to become a Patron and happily accept that invitation with best wishes and the best of luck to all involved.”

Chiké Okоkwo “I feel very lucky to have been born in Kingston Upon Thames. I feel very much a product of my area in that I can trace a line directly from the youth arts I was a part of in the Royal Borough, to anything I’ve achieved as a professional actor since I left. I’m proud to be part of the IYAF and look forward to the great creativity that is always the result when talent, enthusiasm and, yes, youth are combined!”
Sהrid0 Sm4h “I’m delighted and honoured to become a Patron of the International Youth Arts Festival. If it wasn’t for my early experience with the National Youth Music Theatre, I wouldn’t have got where I am today - and you wouldn’t have invited me to be a Patron. Good luck to all participants and all productions.”
Ma,3*e W/ra “I am really thrilled to support such a wonderful and important festival. My own years in youth theatre were rich and magical, and such an event can only bring joy to all - performers, audiences and residents. I wish you the very best.
