4. Proven Interventions to h elp Children & Adolescents with Reading and Writing Difficulties
- Steven G. Feifer, D.Ed., ABSNP
Every child and teen experiences emotional ups and downs and engages in challenging behaviours from time to time. Though frustrating, these reactions are an important part of development for all kids. However, these outbursts become a problem when they happen frequently, when they are excessive, and when they begin to impair a child or youth’s functioning. Emotional and behavioural challenges have increased drastically among children and adolescents over the years with alarmingly high prevalence rates. Unfortunately, most go without effective support, which makes them susceptible for developing severe emotional and/or behavioural disorders that impair their social and emotional wellbeing, relationships, and development.
Early intervention and treatment are critical to support children and teen’s social, emotional, and behavioural well-being and reduce future risk. Although teachers, parents, and mental health professionals know they need to help, they aren’t always confident in how to do so – especially in the heat of the moment. They may have tried different strategies, but with limited success. Thankfully, these children and teens can be supported easily with the right tools and know-how. This dynamic workshop is vital for anyone working with children and teens. Participants will develop an understanding of what is going on for children and teens, what happens when the demands on them outweigh their capacity to cope, the underlying needs they have, and the function of an emotional or behavioural meltdown.
Learning Objectives
• Understand the unique stress kids and teens face and their underlying needs
• Identify the function of behaviours and emotions and typical adult traps that escalate emotional reactions and problematic behaviours
• Learn how to respond effectively when big emotions/ behaviours show up and promote emotion regulation and positive behaviours

Think you’ve mastered everything you need to know about anxiety management? Think again –you might be surprised!
When it comes to supporting anxious students, most adults unknowingly perpetuate ineffective methods. For instance, do you provide accommodations to students to help relieve their anxiety? Do you advocate deep breathing or relaxation techniques as anxiety-busting strategies? If so, you may be unwittingly making student anxiety stronger.
Anxiety is at epidemic levels among children and teens. However, it is highly treatable when you know how to support students in helpful ways. This workshop is vital for every educator and school mental health professional committed to mastering their understanding of emotional health and to making a real difference in the lives of anxious students.
Revolutionize Your Approach to Enhance Student Well-Being.
This is not just another workshop on anxiety – it’s a gamechanger in mental health and education. Through practical applications and interactive learning, you will be equipped to support not just individual students but the entire classroom in managing anxiety and other big emotions while fostering emotional resilience.

November 13–15, 2024
Wednesday to Friday 8:30am to 4:00pm
Workshop #1 - 8:30am - 4:00pm
An Integrated Approach to Trauma Treatment:
Synthesizing Neuroscience, Attachment Theory
and Evidence-Based Modalities
- Presented by John Arden, Ph.D.
This important workshop, facilitated by Dr John Arden, a world-renowned psychologist, teacher and author, will offer a wealth of knowledge and practical strategies that use a synthesized model of neuroscience, attachment theory and evidence-based treatment to more effectively treat clients who have experienced complex trauma.
You will learn about the latest research in neuroscience, epigenetics, immunology and endocrinology, and how these discoveries can be synthesized with evidence-based trauma treatments, psychotherapy research and attachment theory into a hybrid therapeutic model. This model will help you identify which elements of psychotherapeutic schools are effective and which may be counter-therapeutic in the trauma treatment context. You will be challenged and supported to move beyond any specific theoretical paradigms towards a common factors approach.
Engaging with real life examples, you will gain a deeper understanding of how addressing nervous system functioning is a fundamental therapeutic process in improving mood and behaviour and achieving a reduction in symptoms. Special attention will be given to addressing the neurodynamics of PTSD and the crucial role of memory.
At the end of this workshop, you will come away with many powerful tools, understandings and confidence to better assist your traumatised clients on their path to recovery and to live a fuller life.
Learning Objectives
• Explore the Synthesized Model: Delve into the synthesized model of neuroscience, attachment theory, and evidence-based treatment, understanding how these components inform trauma treatment strategies.
• Understand Neuroscientific Foundations: Gain insights into the latest research in neuroscience, epigenetics, immunology, and endocrinology, and learn how to apply this knowledge to enhance therapeutic interventions.
• Identify Effective Psychotherapeutic Elements: Learn to discern effective psychotherapeutic elements and their applicability in trauma treatment, while recognizing potential counter-therapeutic approaches.
• Adopt a Common Factors Approach: Challenge and embrace a common factors approach, moving beyond specific theoretical paradigms to leverage universal therapeutic factors for trauma recovery.
• Address Nervous System Functioning: Explore the fundamental role of nervous system functioning in mood regulation and behavior modification, and learn practical techniques to optimize nervous system health in clients.
• Navigate Neurodynamics of PTSD: Gain specialized knowledge in addressing the neurodynamics of PTSD, including memory processing and its impact on symptomatology.
John Arden, Ph.D. is the author of 14 books, including Brain2Brain: Enacting Client Change Through the Persuasive Power of Neuroscience, The Brain Bible: How to Stay Vital, Productive, and Happy for a Lifetime, Rewire Your Brain: Think Your Way to a Better Life, Brain-Based Therapy with Adults: Evidence-Based Treatment for Everyday Practice and Brain-Based Therapy with Children and Adolescents: Evidence-Based Treatment for Everyday Practice (with Lloyd Linford). Dr. Arden serves as Director of Training in Mental Health for Kaiser Permanente in the Northern California region. He oversees the training programs in 24 medical centers where over 100 postdoctoral residents and interns are trained each year. Dr. Arden also provides individual, group and family therapy and chemical dependency counselling through Kaiser Permanente. He presents workshops on brain-based therapy internationally and in the United States.
Workshop #2 - 8:30am - 4:00pm
Normative and Prolonged Grief: Proven and Effective Clinical Interventions
to Help Your Clients Process Grief and Loss
- Presented by Christina Zampitella, Psy.D., FT
Mental health and healthcare professionals are faced with the often misunderstood and misdiagnosed symptoms of normative and prolonged grief. Formal education rarely, if ever, provides extensive enough training to accurately identify and treat those who are grieving. Unfortunately, grieving clients are diagnosed incorrectly because symptoms can mimic normative or prolonged grief. The grieving process is often pathologized, or misdiagnosed, resulting in potential exacerbation of the presenting issues because inappropriate interventions are utilized. As a result, those who are grieving are often inadvertently disenfranchised by providers, which can make the professional support they sought to reconstruct their previously shattered identities and worldviews ineffective, and even, at time, exacerbate other mental health difficulties. It is essential to be versed in identifying grief related constructs that may underlie, or even cause, mental health and behavior associated problems.
This presentation aims to provide current, research based information on the grieving process, clarify misconceptions of outdated theories, and differentiate between normative and prolonged grief. It also examines the changes in conceptualization, differential diagnosing, and effective, clinically proven interventions that may be utilized with grieving individuals and families. Attendees will leave with an improved clinical skill set they can immediately apply to identify and treat their clients.
Learning Objectives
• Define and differentiate both “normative” and “prolonged” bereavement
• Identify and work effectively with individuals who experience disenfranchised losses
• Describe why the stage model of the grieving process is no longer utilized to inform treatment planning or develop interventions, while introducing modern theories of bereavement processes
• Discuss and describe changes to the DSM-5-TR as it relates to normative and prolonged bereavement
• Learn how to make effective and accurate differential diagnoses to inform appropriate interventions
• Learn and utilize multiple creative, clinically proven effective interventions to support both those with normative and prolonged grief
Workshop #3 - 8:30am - 4:00pm
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Transcending Traditional Approaches
- Presented by Jennifer Patterson, Psy.D., LCPC

Through experiential learning and evidencebased techniques, participants will cultivate a profound understanding of ACT and its practical applications.
Join ACT expert and International trainer Jennifer Patterson, Psy.D., LCPC, for this workshop, where you will develop efficient, evidence-based skills, case conceptualization techniques, and powerful strategies that will improve outcomes for the following:
Christina Zampitella Psy.D., FT is a licensed clinical psychologist, Fellow of Thanatology, founder and owner of The Center for Grief and Trauma Therapy, coowner and Director of Clinical Services of Integrative Psychology Group. Optimizing our Understanding of ADHD & It’s Complex Nature
- Presented by Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D., R. Psych
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a complex, heterogeneous disorder. When left unmanaged, ADHD is associated with long-term pervasive impairment across all areas of functioning. Recent models of ADHD have conceptualized ADHD as a disorder of behavioural inhibition, impairing executive functioning (EF), which lead to difficulties with self-regulation, organizing and planning behaviours, attention, and distractibility Given the substantial risk for students with ADHD, conducting valid and collaborative assessments, as well as developing effective interventions to promote student success, are critical to mitigate associated impairments and long-term risks.

Shielding the Vulnerable: How to Protect their Heart and Minds
- Presented by Eva de Gosztonyi, M.A.
For those who spend their days interacting with the young, be it in schools, group homes, daycares and in our own homes, we sometimes forget how vulnerable they are. Developing beings are entirely dependent on the care of the more mature. Yet so many common practices we use, especially when behaviour is challenging, increase feelings of vulnerability and inadvertently lead to other unanticipated problems, including mental health issues. This session will focus on creating a better understanding of what our children need from us and on analyzing the pitfalls of some of our most commonly used interventions and interactions, including the use of praise, rewards, consequences, time outs, democratic or child-led practices, and self-regulation.

Managing Behaviour Without Rewards
- Presented by Eva de Gosztonyi, M.A.
When students have difficulty with their behaviours teachers are often advised to implement a reward system. However, developmental science and trauma research do not support these systems, warning of unwanted side-effects for children’s development. These systems are known to lose their effectiveness over time, are complicated to implement, and rarely result in long-term change. Of concern is that they can significantly affect the all-important child-adult attachment relationship, can increase anxiety even among the “well-behaved”, and can cause discouragement and a sense of shame for the student who cannot do better despite best intentions. This presentation will provide an analysis of what works and does not work, and why.

However, many are unsure how to provide effective help, particularly in the heat of the moment. Are you ready to make a profound difference in the lives of children and adolescents facing intense behavioural challenges?

Addressing the Root Causes of Anxiety in Children and Adolescence
- Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
There is currently an epidemic of anxiety and agitation affecting children and teens which can take many forms including attention problems, clinginess, eating problems, obsessions, compulsions, phobias, panic, sleep issues, physical illnesses, as well as a host of other perplexing behaviours. Today’s world can create many challenges for children and youth with school pressures, peer interactions, family dynamics, negative self-image, perfectionism, and many other stressors that can impede a child’s ability to learn and mature. Whether it’s the natural, episodic worries or more profound and crippling versions of anxiety, Dr. Neufeld will help make sense of the roots of anxiety and agitation and suggest ways in which we can help bring the anxious and agitated to rest.
Learning Objectives
• Understanding the spectrum of syndromes that are all rooted in the primary emotion of alarm
• Appreciating the attachment roots of anxiety and agitation
• Exposing the emotional root of most attention problems
• Equipping with solutions that are both natural and developmental
Dr. Gordon Neufeld is a Vancouver-based developmental psychologist with over 50 years of experience with children and youth and those responsible for them. Optimizing Self-Regulation & Managing Big Emotions
- Presented by Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D.
In today’s world, our children and youth face an unprecedented level of stress and pressure, making it hard to effectively selfregulate and manage day-to-day stressors. As parents, educators, and mental health professionals, it’s essential that we equip ourselves with effective strategies to help children and teens develop the skills they need to navigate life’s challenges. When they don’t know how to manage those emotions, problem behaviours often result and can negatively affect their physical, psychological, academic, and social well-being. For many, they struggle to meet even the most basic expectations. It is essential they receive the right support. Join us for a transformative workshop designed for mental health professionals, educators, parents, and caregivers to build self-regulation and emotional management skills in children and teens.

Stress and Trauma: An Attachment-Based Perspective
Fresh insights from the sciences of development, emotion and attachment shed light on the hidden wisdom of the stress response, the essence of trauma, and the pivotal role of both attachment and emotion in etiology and recovery. What is also revealed in putting the pieces together is a common denominator that cuts across syndromes and diagnoses and informs intervention. This model of stress and trauma applies across all ages and venues, including educational settings, private practice, treatment programs, as well as personal healing and recovery. This model also has significant implications for the prevention, recognition and treatment of distressed children and youth, whether via the school, the family, special programs or direct treatment.

The Current Crisis of Well-Being in Our
Children and Youth:
An Attachment-Based Developmental Perspective
- Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
What’s happening to our kids? The alarming rise in anxiety, depression and attention problems, begs for an explanation. How is it that, in this time of relative prosperity, with children being more educated than ever, with knowledge now at our fingertips, children and adolescents are becoming increasingly more troubled? How is it that, in an age when kids are finally being seen and heard, when parenting is more childcentered than ever, when schools are finally prioritizing the well-being of students, their suffering is increasing?

Igniting the Spark: Strategies for Motivating the Disengaged Student
- Presented by Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D., R. Psych
Are you ready to ignite the flames of student engagement and unleash the untapped potential of every learner? Concerns over students meeting academic milestones are paramount in educational settings, often linked to issues of disengagement and lack of motivation. Disengagement has become an alarming challenge, especially since the impact of COVID-19. Since most kids lose their intrinsic motivation for learning in early elementary, we need to know how to break the barriers to engagement together and revolutionize the way we approach student motivation.

Working with Oppositional, Defiant and Disruptive Children & Adolescents in the Classroom
- Presented by Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D., R. Psych
In today’s complex world, most children and adolescents experience ups and downs and engage in challenging behaviours from time to time. However, these behaviours become problematic when they occur frequently and begin to impair daily function. The prevalence of emotional and behavioural issues in young individuals has surged, often without adequate support, leading to potential long-term consequences for their well-being and development. Early intervention and treatment are crucial to support the social, emotional, and behavioural wellbeing of children and adolescents and reduce future risks. However, many are unsure how to provide effective help, particularly in the heat of the moment.

In this workshop, you will discover evidence-based interventions and practical strategies to boost anxious student’s internal locus of control and master anxiety. Designed specifically for school and mental health professionals, this workshop goes beyond the basics and offers specialized knowledge and skills to optimize outcomes with anxious students.

Not everyone grows up as they get older. The construct of psychological immaturity has been with us as an intuitive concept for ages, but only recently has developmental science advanced to a state where it can now yield effective strategies and interventions to address learning and behavioural challenges. Bestselling author of Hold On To Your Kids, Gordon Neufeld presents an integrated developmental approach to reaching troubled kids, using the constructs of attachment, vulnerability and maturation.

Making Sense of Adolescence
- Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
Crossing the bridge from childhood to adulthood has never been so daunting. The time of adolescence is longer than ever and yet society today offers little support in understanding or facilitating this transition. This course is designed to be used by parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators, professionals – anyone who desires to make sense of adolescence. Parents of pre- teens will find this course invaluable as preparation for what lies ahead. The key to making sense of the adolescent is to understand the underlying developmental dynamics as well as the attachment needs of the adolescent. These needs are typically underestimated due to the physical maturity of adolescents and the resistance to dependence that can result from becoming prematurely attached to peers.

Aggression problems are deeply rooted in instinct and emotion and are therefore resistant to conventional discipline practices. Dr. Neufeld uncovers these roots and outlines steps to addressing them. His rich professional experience with aggressive children and violent youth informs this refreshing approach to an ageold problem. The principles apply to children of all ages and all settings: home, school and treatment. One of the foremost interpreters of the developmental approach tackles one of the oldest and most perplexing of human problems, exposing its deep developmental roots and revealing why conventional approaches to the problem are so ineffective. There are many indications that this problem is escalating among our children and youth. What tends to grab our attention is the more violating acts of aggression but what is truly alarming is the ground swell of attacking energy within and between our kids that erupts in their interaction, music, language, play, games and fantasies. This attacking energy is also fueling an alarming increase in suicide and suicidal ideation among children. Dr. Neufeld provides a way of understanding that not only explains what is happening around us but also provides insight into the individuals – both children and adults – who present with these problems. - Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
In this workshop, we will delve into the significant sources of stress in schools and explore how attachment issues contribute to this phenomenon. We will discuss how the traditional approach to education can exacerbate stress levels among students and hinder their emotional well-being. Additionally, we will examine the importance of cultivating a school culture that promotes positive relationships and empathy to create an environment where students can thrive. Dr. Neufeld will share insights into the topics of school, stress, and resilience within the context of educational systems. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how these factors intersect and impact student development.
Supporting the Anxious & Worried Mind in the Classroom and at School
- Presented by Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D., R. Psych
Think you’ve mastered everything you need to know about anxiety management? Think again - you might be surprised!

Proven Brief Interventions to Help
Students with Emotional and Behavioural Problems
- Presented by Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D., R. Psych
Unfortunately, most go without effective support, which makes them susceptible for developing severe emotional and/or behavioural disorders that impair their social and emotional well-being, relationships, and development.
