I am very happy to continue serving our mutual clients and helping them live their best lives!” —Rod Jordao. MC As a practitioner with a private practice I have been lucky to collaborate with an organization such as SCHC.
Although being my own boss and working for myself is really important to me, I still feel like I am part of a team that believes in me and what I do and whose philosophy is one that resonates with mine. I have also really enjoyed working with the clients of SCHC as their post treatment counsellor as these become men and women who have undergone profound personal transformation at the Centre and I get to share in the honour of continuing to walk with them in their journey towards a better future. — Ana Claudia Noufal, RCC

2 Day Skills Training Intensive: Working with Oppositional, Defiant & Anger Issues with Children & Adolescents Richmond - November 15 & 16, 2021 | Edmonton - November 29 & 30, 2021 Dear Participant, I am pleased to launch a new two-day intensive on my best-selling topic Working with Oppositional, Defiant and Anger Issues with Children and Adolescents. During our well received one-day workshops I covered theoretical practice as well as skills. The most common feedback I received was the desire for an additional day to dive deeper into these skills, ask questions about your most difficult cases, break into groups, brainstorm and practice. The two-day format will enable the time needed to successfully achieve this skills practice. Participants will explore the targeted intervention strategies I fondly refer to as “magic dust”. I have developed these skills based on the young clients I have treated individually or in a group setting. I currently maintain a private practice and serve as the director of an alternative education program. The skills we will practice are relevant for both classroom and clinical settings. My techniques have been successfully used in a range of environments from at school or home to institutional settings such as treatment centres and group homes. This program is designed to equip participants with applicable skills that can be implemented immediately for your most difficult students and clients. These strategies can be scaled up or scaled down in order to accommodate the needs of younger children, older children, adolescents and young adults.

2 Day Skills Training Intensive: Strengthening Executive Skills in Children & Adolescents Edmonton - December 2 & 3, 2021 Dear Colleague, Many students struggle in school, not because they have problems acquiring academic skills but because they struggle with a key set of skills that underlie academic performance in a fundamental way. I’m referring to executive skills. Executive skills are critical to the acquisition of academic skills, but, more importantly, they are the skills students need to get things done. They are brain-based skills such as task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goaldirected persistence that are absolutely critical to school success. Some students seem to acquire them naturally, but many students don’t. This workshop, which offers intensive training in how to help these students, will provide a model for understanding what these skills are and how they develop. The primary focus of the workshop, though, will be to give participants the opportunity to practice an array of practical interventions that can be incorporated into the classroom or into clinical practice. -Peg Dawson Child & Adolescent Focused | 12 CEUS | 8:30am – 4pm
Making sense of Anxiety Richmond - February 17 & 18, 2022 | Calgary - February 28 & March 1, 2022 The escalating level of anxiety in our children begs for an explanation as well as a solution. Dr. Neufeld sheds light on this age-old problem, paving the way for natural interventions that can actually get to the root causes as opposed to just managing symptoms. This workshop brings a fresh and promising perspective to one of our most troubling and perplexing human problems. Although the focus is on children, this enlightening material will benefit anyone suffering from anxiety. The time has finally come to be able to answer the problem of anxiety. What makes it possible now is that we currently have enough pieces of the puzzle to create a coherent picture: a mastery of attachment theory, an understanding of human vulnerability, a working knowledge of attention, and the discoveries of neuroscience. Possessing the pieces are not enough however. It takes a theorist’s mind to put the pieces together and a seasoned therapist’s wisdom to test this model against human experience. Dr. Neufeld has been uniquely positioned, not only to answer this question but also to understand the implications for our children. The resulting solutions are surprising, not in that they are counter intuitive but rather that they run counter to the prevailing practice. The focus of this workshop is the anxiety of our children and what we can do about this, both as a society and as the adults responsible for them. the dynamics and insights however apply to all ages.

The Anxiety Compass: The Ultimate Process to Help Children & Teens Tame Anxiety Gremlins Calgary - Nov 23, 2021 (Live Stream Available) | Saskatoon - Nov 25, 2021 | Winnipeg - Nov 26, 2021 Anxiety was at epidemic levels even before the COVID-19 pandemic and has only worsened exponentially since. Anxiety is the most common mental health concern among children and teens and is not something they outgrow. Indeed, most mental health problems in adulthood begin as anxiety in childhood and adolescence as anxiety. Early intervention is essential to minimize later problems with depression and other social, emotional, behavioural, academic, and health difficulties. Unfortunately, most children go without effective support until they are teens, a time at which they are extremely susceptible for developing severe anxiety disorders. Without having a full understanding of anxiety and knowing what to look for, we can easily miss when anxiety shows up. Worse, many well-intentioned parents, teachers, and professionals and may even unwittingly make anxiety stronger in their attempts to make children feel better. It is critical that all adults who may have to help children and teens with anxiety first develop a thorough understanding of what is going on for children and teens in today’s world, the pressures they face, and what happens when the demands put on them outweigh their capacity to cope. Then, they must learn what is truly effective to support this population and build their capacity to manage anxiety. Thankfully, anxiety is highly treatable. There are essential considerations for effective interventions that are not commonly known nor practiced but are easy to learn. This workshop is vital for anyone working with children and teens who experience anxiety. In this advanced workshop, clinicians, educators, and families will develop a deep understanding of anxiety from a transdiagnostic perspective. Special considerations are also given to Generations Z and Alpha and the specific stressors they face that contribute to anxiety and emotional dysregulation. Participants will also learn effective tools and processes to help children and teens manage their anxiety successfully across all contexts while promoting their overall courage, confidence, resilience, and well-being.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy Calgary - February 10 & 11, 2022 | Live Streaming December 13 & 14, 2021 (8:30am - 4pm PT) Though the Solution Focused Approach has been around for several decades, it remains both mysterious and hard for professionals to implement with their clients. There are several reasons for this but the primary reason for this is related to the simplicity of this approach. Often times we confuse “simple” with “easy” and think that asking clients Solution Focused questions will seamlessly lead towards change. In order to master this approach you have to know that simple does not mean easy and develop the skill of asking the kinds of questions that lead towards positive change. Once this is done then you’ll be able to use this approach to help clients regardless of the issue that client presents with. The strength of this approach is that once you master the language of this approach you will be able to shift the conversation from the client’s problem towards the desired changes the client is looking to achieve and develop steps to achieve those changes. This lecture will demonstrate how to do just that and be focused on the key skills that professionals need to develop in order to have the biggest impact on their clients lives.

Internal Family Systems Therapy: Step by Step Procedures for Healing Traumatic Wounds, & Alleviating Anxiety, Depression, Trauma & More Edmonton - February 24 & 25, 2022 | Live Streaming October 13 & 14, 2021 (9:30am - 5pm PT) After decades of clinical innovation and recent scientific research, the empirically validated Internal Family Systems (IFS) model has been shown to be effective at improving clients’ general functioning and well-being. This paradigm-shifting model provides clinicians with procedures for helping clients with the most challenging mental health profiles heal the wounded, burdened, and traumatized parts of their systems. The IFS model provides a compassionate, respectful, nonpathologizing approach to understanding the organization and functioning of the human psyche. The transformative IFS approach embraces and celebrates the natural multiplicity of the mind. Its assumption that every part of the system has good intention and valuable resources allows clinicians to approach even the most troubling of “symptoms” with curiosity and respect. IFS offers therapists a powerful and effective set of tools for empowering clients with a wide range of clinical profiles to heal their wounded parts, resulting in: • a way to enter clients’ inner ecology without the overemphasis on containment and stabilization • symptom reduction, increased internal harmony and improved functioning for clients • deep self-healing within even the most troubled clients IFS is a powerful treatment modality. Once you experience it, you will want to incorporate it into your practice. Through instruction, video demonstration, and experiential exercises, Alexia D. Rothman, Ph.D., Certified IFS therapist and consultant and colleague of Dr. Richard Schwartz (founder of IFS) will show you step-by-step how to apply the most effective, empirically validated IFS interventions to help your clients connect with and understand their conflicting parts to facilitate deep, lasting healing.

Dr. Brokenleg draws from research and experiences of Indigenous cultures and will provide long-lasting solutions to build resiliency and manage trauma. “In this materialistic, fast-paced culture, many children have broken circles, and the fault line usually starts with damaged relationships. Having no bonds to significant adults, they chase counterfeit belongings through gangs, cults, and promiscuous relationships. Some are so alienated that they have abandoned the pursuit of human attachment. Guarded, lonely, and distrustful, they live in despair or strike out in rage. Families, schools, and youth organizations are being challenged to form new “tribes” for all of our children so there will be no “psychological orphans.” ~Dr. Martin Brokenleg
Living the Medicine Wheel - Sandi Boucher Information on Indigenous cultures and teachings is often hard to come by and the results are often questionable. But those who live within one of those cultures know that Indigenous teachings are empowering, not only to Indigenous people, but to anyone who chooses to adopt them. This session introduces participants to the Medicine Wheel teachings, a teaching tool used by many. Organizer

Gathering Our Medicine: Strengthening & Healing the Kinship Circle - Denise Findlay, M.Ed., ACC The cascading impacts of intergenerational trauma as a result of colonization and residential schools are far reaching. Indigenous families and communities have faced immense suffering as a result of the decimation of the place-based cultures and ways of being that supported health and well-being since long ago. Mainstream approaches to mental health and the treatment of trauma have proven ineffective for the most part. “Gathering Our Medicine” offers a fresh approach for families, communities and those in helping roles longing to support collective healing. “Gathering Our Medicine” is a cross cultural model intended to re-orient us in our work with Indigenous families and communities. Informed by attachment theory, developmental science and the science of emotion, the program provides a framework for restoring dignity to role of caring for each other in the context of community and the cultural ways of kinship circle. The program encourages a restoration of the communities’ natural capacity to care for one another while shifting helping professionals into the role of facilitators and to restore the very relationships in which healing can unfold naturally and spontaneously.
Uniting Mind, Body, Energy & Spirit - Michael DeMolina, Ph.D., MS., LPCS, CDCS, MAC This presentation will address the science and the wisdom of uniting mind, body, energy and spirit. As we broaden our understanding of trauma and addictions, we realize we are all in recovery from something, and we already have the internal resources we need for individual and community healing. If we speak of trauma, we must describe resiliency. When we intervene on addictions, we must tell of the joys of connection. And when we share stories of our past, we must also plant seeds of hope for future generations
Cultural Beliefs and Spirituality: Balancing Body, Mind and Spirit - Sharon R. Baptiste BSW RSW MHT For many centuries, first nations people lived in harmony with nature and had their own governance systems. They depended on their knowledge keepers and spiritual healers to assist in processes that needed to deal with behaviour. All the people knew their roles in the commune systems. At a very young age they adapted to their traditional ways including rights of passage ceremonies. They picked traditional medicines to help in healing processes. The Sweetgrass cleansing ceremony plays a vital role to enhance mind, body and spirit.
Awakening the Trickster: An Invitation to Healing the Legacy Effect - Cynthia WesleyEsquimaux, Ph.D. Cynthia will speak to the need to understand the legacy effect of original and intergenerational trauma within Indigenous populations. Historic and recent events cannot be divided into “chapters” in Canada’s history – there has been a continuous impact on the well-being of Indigenous peoples. The Trickster awakens the unconscious to adverse experiences and jumpstarts the healing process. It’s a restoration of traditional life ways and a reestablishment of “wise practices” or deeply cultural behaviours and familial relationships.

Burnout Solution: Enhancing Professional Resilience Live Streaming October 15, 2021 All mental health providers experience some form of burnout during their career at least once. Most ignore the warning signs until it’s too late, mistakes are made, and licenses and personal relationships become at risk. Pre-COVID, burnout was related to workload, client/students needs being of greater importance than your own, and balancing personal and professional responsibilities. In this new post-pandemic world, the resources and therapeutic terrain has significantly changed, and burnout is even more prevalent. Many mental health/education providers are now experiencing Zoom fatigue, depression, anxiety, and many other symptoms and issues that are novel to the therapeutic/ educational community. Common early warning signs of burnout include: feeling tired of or annoyed with clients/students “complaints”, beginning sessions late or ending early, getting sleepy or “spacing out” during sessions, taking ethical shortcuts, and many others. We often preach self-care to our clients/students, but are we taking our own advice? It’s time we did. In this seminar, Daniel J. Fox, Ph.D., will examine the signs, symptoms, and sources of burnout and explain how understanding your Emotional Intelligence can renew professional perspective and excitement while helping you eliminate key stressors in your life and in your practice. This program will examine the benefit of restorative, emotionally intelligent relationships in your life to improve outcomes and your personal support network. So many times in my practice I’ve met new clients who’ve seen multiple therapists and have tried an array of medications, only to continue to be plagued with unrelenting anxiety. When they show up at my office they are frustrated and nearly hopeless. After studying the research, working with experts in the field, and almost exclusively treating clients with anxiety disorders for 30 years, I can usually help even the most treatment resistant clients. Since the early days of my clinical career, I use evidenced based treatments but have also developed creative, yet simple, methods that have been vital to providing relief for chronic anxiety. These techniques are easy to learn and implement such that you will be able to help your clients achieve therapeutic results. Finally understand operant conditioning and how negative reinforcement is the most common reason why people continue to suffer from OCD, panic attacks, social anxiety, and phobias. Help clients stop negatively reinforcing their anxiety by using exposure and response prevention. Understand how to play detective to explain to clients with panic disorder that their first panic attack was a perfect storm of environmental and physical factors after which they developed anxiety sensitivity thereby negatively reinforcing their fear; interoceptive exposure is the cure.

Making Social & Executive Functioning Skills Stick! Practical Strategies to Teach Your Skills Immediately Live Streaming November 9, 2021 Executive functions are the cognitive tasks that allow us to plan, organize, initiate, attend to task, and regulate and monitor behaviour. They are the key building blocks to learning and can be compared to the orchestra leader of the band. When the orchestra leader is on the podium, the band can make beautiful music! But when the orchestra leader steps off the podium, lots of mishaps can occur. We do know that kids with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and certain types of learning disabilities (including nonverbal learning disability) can all be impacted by executive function deficits. These children often struggle with social skills as well. In fact, it’s difficult to separate the two, as they often intertwine. As an example, if a child can’t wait and control a reaction long enough to contemplate its outcome, his behaviour will mostly likely result in a social blunder. If children are not flexible thinkers, there will often be clashes with peers and adults when things don’t “go their way.” In this seminar, we will be providing a tool box of practical strategies that you can use to teach new social skills and to reduce the outcomes of poor executive functioning so that your student/client will exhibit less executive function “dysfunction” and more appropriate social awareness and responsiveness. Helping Anxious Kids at School & at Home Live Streaming November 17 & 18, 2021 When children and teens are in the grips of worry and anxiety, adults often feel stuck as well. Educators, therapists, and parents routinely tell me how overwhelmed they feel by the frequency and intensity of anxiety in the children they care about. And they want to know what to do. This series will answer the questions I hear most often, including: • How does “frontloading” with anxious kids • How do we get anxious students into school? make interventions more effective? • What do we do when an anxious child is falling apart in school? • What can adults do to both prevent anxiety from becoming so powerful, and help children manage it when it does show up? • Why are the strategies frequently taught to kids—like breathing, relaxation, and other common CBT techniques—not working?
• How can we get parents, schools, and outside providers to work together more effectively? • How can we create more effective accommodations, 504’s, and behavioral plans for anxious children and teens? • What is the connection between anxiety and depression?

Working with Children & Adolescents on the Autism Spectrum: Proven & Practical Interventions to Address Challenging Behaviours Live Streaming December 1, 2021 Much has been researched and written about regarding the importance of early interventions for individuals with ASD. However, with new diagnostic criteria, individuals with high-functioning ASD may not be diagnosed until later in childhood or adolescence. This webinar will help clinicians, educators, and families develop and implement interventions for individuals with ASD throughout their childhood into adulthood. From understanding the differences in individuals with ASD’s brains and how they process information and communicate to exploring creative and practical ways to teach skills, participants who complete the webinar will gain a fresh perspective on working with individuals with ASD. All strategies presented are designed to prepare, protect, and promote independence for individuals with high-functioning ASD. Specific topics will include discussing the diagnosis with the individual and others, interventions to implement in school and at home to address the increasing demands of elementary school, helping individuals with ASD effectively manage their screen time, teaching sex education and self-care, as well reviewing questioning sexuality or gender identity in the ASD population. Obstacles to developing independence (i.e., driving, applying to University, getting a job, moving out) will be reviewed along with the skills to begin teaching to encourage success and independence. We will cover the transition from adolescence into adulthood and how to help young adults find the motivation to accept assistance and support as needed.
