I am very happy to continue serving our mutual clients and helping them live their best lives!” —Rod Jordao. MC As a practitioner with a private practice I have been lucky to collaborate with an organization such as SCHC.

Although being my own boss and working for myself is really important to me, I still feel like I am part of a team that believes in me and what I do and whose philosophy is one that resonates with mine. I have also really enjoyed working with the clients of SCHC as their post treatment counsellor as these become men and women who have undergone profound personal transformation at the Centre and I get to share in the honour of continuing to walk with them in their journey towards a better future. — Ana Claudia Noufal, RCC

Suicide & Self-Harm in Adolescents: Effective Assessment and Intervention Strategies for Young People in Crisis All too often clinicians are faced with a suicidal or self-harming young person in their office. The despair felt by these youth and their families is frequently palpable. Even the most competent professional can be left feeling overwhelmed and ill-prepared to offer guidance and hope. Therapists and other helping professionals can find it daunting to sort through the legal, clinical, ethical, and personal issues that these serious challenges can bring up. This workshop offers structure, understanding, and hope to professionals. It is only through gaining these for themselves that clinicians are able to show their clients the paths toward recovery. Through the strategies taught in this workshop, the professional can more easily guide youth and their families back to psychological health. Professionals learn key skills in understanding, assessing, and treating suicide and self-harm in a way that protects them and produces better outcomes for their clients.

IFS and Polyvagal Theory: Healing Through Compassionate Connection Despite the diversity of content that brings clients to therapy, difficulty regulating their emotional experience is at the heart of their struggles. Clients can feel hijacked by extreme emotional states, uncomfortable in their own skin, or think or behave in ways they wish they wouldn’t. Polyvagal Theory (PVT) helps us understand what is happening on a biological level when our clients are emotionally dysregulated or stuck in adaptive survival states, such as fight, flight, freeze, or numb. Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) offers a compassionate, non-pathologizing approach to healing the wounded, burdened, and traumatized parts of clients’ systems and increasing internal harmony and connection. This workshop explores the integration of IFS therapy and Polyvagal Theory to help clinicians more safely and effectively use the IFS model in treatment.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Skills Training Research is increasingly showing the importance of working with the body when treating trauma. Sometimes referred to as “bottom-up techniques,” somatic (or body-based) work is often critical when helping clients recover from PTSD and other trauma or stressor-related disorders. However, many evidence-based therapies de-emphasize somatic work, focusing instead on “top-down,” or cognitive techniques. While top-down techniques can be immensely helpful, they can also be ineffective if taught too soon, before bottom-up techniques are mastered. This is because of how the brain is naturally wired, and our clients’ need to first stabilize lower brain regions (such as the amygdala), reconnecting with the body and restoring a sense of safety. When clients can connect with their own experiences, and with others, the traditional top-down approaches become more effective. This seminar helps clinicians integrate somatic, bottom-up work into trauma treatment by teaching several body-based skills that help clients better connect with the therapist, re-establish safety in their body, and regulate their nervous system!

Learning Objectives 1. Name at least one area of the brain involved in somatic techniques. 2. State three different categories of somatic techniques.

Proven & Effective Intervention Strategies for Burnout, Stress, & Compassion Fatigue Welcome, I am glad that you have decided to participate in this training. I was introduced to compassion fatigue in 1997 when I started my doctoral program at Florida State University. I studied with Dr. Charles Figley wrote the book Compassion Fatigue: Coping with Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder in Those Who Treat the Traumatized in 1995. In my first year at FSU, with the help of Anna Baranowsky and Kathleen Dunning, we developed the first ever treatment for compassion fatigue that we called the Accelerated Recovery Program for Compassion Fatigue. Through the ARP, we have successfully treated hundreds of professional caregivers who suffered from the symptoms of compassion fatigue and burnout, helping them to regain joy and purpose in their work. The ARP remains today as the only manualized, systematic treatment for compassion fatigue that has demonstrated empirical effectiveness. Through treating hundreds and training tens of thousands of caregiving professionals in the area of compassion fatigue, I have stumbled upon some things that work. Mostly what I have found is that there are no shortcuts. Just like a surgeon or a professional athlete, caregiving professionals must mature into excellence and resiliency. However, just because we survive a couple of decades in the field does not mean that we are effective, resilient, and joyful. It seems, more often, that the opposite is true—many of those folks with all the experience seem to become crusty and cynical. In 2020, I and Jim Dietz, MD published the acclaimed Forward-Facing® Professional Resilience: Prevention and Resolution of Burnout, Toxic Stress and Compassion Fatigue. This book follows the course of the workshop and is built upon the evidence of effectiveness of this workshop lessening work-related stress symptoms detailed in 11 separate empirical peer-reviewed articles. It also describes our experience of providing this workshop to medical professionals for the past ten years and witnessing the transformations in their lives. Contained in this presentation you will learn the skills for preventing compassion fatigue and developing professional resilience. This information is underscored with an invitation to caregivers to begin the process of intentional maturation in their professional and personal lives. This training will provide an introduction and illuminate the pathway of how you can rediscover joy, purpose, meaning, and excitement in your professional mission. You will see the possibilities of how you can do this difficult and sometimes painful work stress-free as you become evermore effective and potent as an agent of caring and change.

Disordered Eating: Somatic, Self-Compassion, and Mindfulness Interventions for Lasting Recovery Regardless of where your clients fall on the disordered eating spectrum, they all share the same painful cyclical experience of unrelenting self-criticism, negative body image, unhealthy behavior, and shame. And while great strides have been made in ED treatment, the recovery rate is still only 50%. In this in-depth seminar you’ll discover how to help clients re-connect with their long-neglected bodies, let go of the “not ____ enough” narrative, and learn to embrace, befriend, and listen to the internal wisdom of their bodies. Packed with practical interventions based in somatic psychotherapy, self-compassion, and mindfulness, this comprehensive seminar will shift your perspective and provide you with strategies that: •

Shift the focus from shame to empowerment from the very start of treatment

Are evidence-based and can easily be integrated into what you’re already doing

Replace the harsh inner critic with self-compassion and curiosity

Help clients re-establish bodily cues for hunger, fullness, and sensory awareness

Calm the nervous system and regulate emotions in triggering situation

Learning Objectives 1. Determine the neurobiological impact of chronic disordered eating patterns on the brain for purposes of providing accurate and effective psychoeducation to clients. 2. Develop evidence based somatic interventions for reducing negative self-talk and poor body image in clients with disordered eating. 3. Integrate self-compassion and somatic interventions into existing treatment approaches, including CBT and DBT. 4. Utilize mindfulness-based interventions to help clients manage emotional dysregulation and food/ body image triggers.

Trauma Competency Training This two-day seminar delivers the bio-psycho-social aspects of traumatic stress, traumatic grief, & traumatic loss. Mental health professionals are on the front lines and, in many cases, have the initial contact with the individual(s) who has experienced traumatic stress. Clinicians are routinely called upon to serve survivors of major disasters, war, childhood physical and sexual trauma, rape, violent crime, and other forms of traumatic events. Participation in this workshop leads to a holistic and systemic understanding of traumatic stress and provides skills for immediate use in a variety of clinical settings. How people respond to traumatic stress is an individual matter based on a number of factors including psychological, emotional, social, cultural, biological, spiritual, and familial. The two-day training will involve an analysis of the various defence mechanisms and other coping skills individuals employ during and following the experience of traumatic stress. Key approaches and interventions include: Crisis intervention, Critical incident stress debriefing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, EMDR, Sensorimotor approaches This training provides take-away evidence-based, best-practice clinical interventions and techniques for the Assessment, Safety & Stabilization, and Remembrance & Mourning phases of trauma treatment. In addition, completion of this two-day seminar meets the educational requirement when applying to become a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (International Association for Trauma Professionals, www.traumapro.net).

Dear Fellow Conference Attendees, On behalf of the entire team at Sunshine Coast Health Centre and Georgia Straight Women’s Clinic, we do hope you join us for the Canadian Mental Health Summit being held the 24th to the 26th of May, 2023. We are once again pleased to be co-sponsoring an event with Jack Hirose & Associates, Canada’s premier psychotherapy conference organizer. The pandemic has been difficult for all of us but Jack’s hosting of this live event is a positive sign that the worst of the pandemic is solidly behind us. We have missed the intimacy of live events but are excited to see that there will not only be the Summit but an additional 15 live and in-person workshops planned for the Spring of 2023. For those who are justifiably hesitant to meet in person, Jack and colleagues will also be offering plenty of virtual events with the same world-class expert lineup you have come to expect over the years. We like to think of this hybrid approach as offering the best of both worlds. I also want to acknowledge Jack Hirose & Associates for reaching an important milestone, having trained over 100,000 mental health professionals over the past 25 years. One cannot overestimate the spinoff benefits to communities across the country in which clients and their loved ones have benefited from working with skilled practitioners.
