I am very happy to continue serving our mutual clients and helping them live their best lives!” —Rod Jordao. MC As a practitioner with a private practice I have been lucky to collaborate with an organization such as SCHC.

Although being my own boss and working for myself is really important to me, I still feel like I am part of a team that believes in me and what I do and whose philosophy is one that resonates with mine. I have also really enjoyed working with the clients of SCHC as their post treatment counsellor as these become men and women who have undergone profound personal transformation at the Centre and I get to share in the honour of continuing to walk with them in their journey towards a better future. — Ana Claudia Noufal, RCC

Sadly, our world today is filled with violence. Even those who specialize in working with trauma victims can be stunned by the stories they hear of childhood abuse, family violence, sexual assaults, and the atrocities of war. Such events can leave lasting scars for those who experience them, whether or not the residual effects lead to full blown clinical disorders like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Inevitably, no matter what kind of clinical work one does, all therapists will encounter clients with some history of trauma. Therefore, all competent clinicians should have an understanding of PTSD, and at least some level of working knowledge of the principles involved in the treatment of individuals with trauma histories. Even experienced trauma clinicians using our best evidence-based practices for PTSD, such as Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure, know that these interventions do not work for everyone. Hence, research is continually seeking tools to enhance current treatments, and to decrease residual symptoms, and it is important to keep abreast of these new developments.

Understanding & Treating Core Shame in Trauma Treatment: A Neurophysiological Approach Shame and trauma are often linked. Current research on how trauma impacts individuals has changed the course of treatment for many clinicians. Furthermore, when implicit core shame is not identified, progress with clients may be slower and less effective. Shame can push clients to hide their innermost feelings because the self-reflection needed to help them improve can activate dysregulated emotional states and a lack of emotional safety. Shame often goes undetected in a therapy session because it is like an infectious disease that lies untreated due to symptoms that may be difficult to recognize. This workshop helps clinicians recognize the non-verbal, unspoken, and often unseen aspects of core shame in clinical work. Identifying the neurophysiological development of shame and trauma throughout the lifespan can drastically improve treatment outcomes. Evidence-based tools and techniques that break the spell of core shame and trauma related to anxiety, depression, and other mental health diagnoses help clients reconstruct a more authentic self. Treating core shame requires the clinician to be vulnerable, courageous, and able to tolerate right-brain dysregulation as it occurs within the therapy session. Creating authentic relationships with clients and trusting the individualized process allows clinicians to step more fully into unconditional positive regard.

Internal Family Systems Therapy: Step-by-Step Procedures for Healing Traumatic Wounds and Alleviating Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, Addiction & More After decades of clinical innovation and recent scientific research, the empirically validated Internal Family Systems (IFS) model has been shown to be effective at improving clients’ general functioning and well-being. This paradigm-shifting model provides clinicians with procedures for helping clients with the most challenging mental health profiles heal the wounded, burdened, and traumatized parts of their systems. The IFS model provides a compassionate, respectful, non-pathologizing approach to understanding the organization and functioning of the human psyche. The transformative IFS approach embraces and celebrates the natural multiplicity of the mind. Its assumption that every part of the system has good intention and valuable resources allows clinicians to approach even the most troubling of “symptoms” with curiosity and respect. IFS is a powerful treatment modality. Once you experience it, you will want to incorporate it into your practice.

Emotional & Binge Eating, Chronic Dieting & Shame: What Every Clinician & Educator Needs to Know “I’m an emotional eater.” I have to lose weight if I want to be healthy.” I know what I’m supposed to do, but I just don’t do it.” “My eating is out of control.” These types of comments are common in our culture, and frequently make their way into the clinical/ educational setting. While the treatment of eating disorders requires specialized training, it’s important for all therapists/educators to understand the paradigm shift happening in our field when it comes to eating problems and weight concerns. After all, societal norms regarding eating, weight, and health affect every client/students we work with, regardless of body size. In this in-depth workshop you’ll discover how recovery from overeating and bingeing is more than a matter of self-control, weight loss, or even understanding the emotional triggers. Judith will teach you how to integrate multiple facets of treatment—including the attuned eating framework, the role of shame and self-compassion, emotional regulation, body image strategies, understanding weight stigma and the Health At Every Size® paradigm—so that clients/students have the tools necessary to end overeating and develop a healthy relationship with food, their bodies, and themselves.

Training in EMDR: Assessing, Resourcing & Treatment Techniques for Trauma & Anxiety Dear Participant, EMDR is by far my most in demand workshop topic, perhaps due to its strong evidence base for PTSD treatment, and the ease with which it can be integrated into therapists’ existing skill sets. For clinicians working with trauma, learning the resource and exposure skills of EMDR is critical, as they can help clients recover quickly, and many clients will ask for this modality by name. Participants attending this 2-day intensive training will learn the original 8-phase model of EMDR, including target sequence planning, resourcing, desensitization, installation, and body scanning for both trauma and anxiety treatment. While the “whys” and “hows” of EMDR will be discussed, this training will emphasize learning through demonstrations and hands-on practice, which prepare participants to begin EMDR skills in their practice right away. Whether you are an experienced EMDR therapist looking to brush up on and add to your skills, or a therapist completely new to EMDR, I am eager to work with you! - Jennifer Sweeton, PsyD, MS, MA

Anxiety was at epidemic levels even before the COVID-19 pandemic and has only worsened exponentially since. Anxiety is the most common mental health concern among children and teens and is not something they outgrow. Indeed, most mental health problems in adulthood begin as anxiety in childhood and adolescence as anxiety. Early intervention is essential to minimize later problems with depression and other social, emotional, behavioural, academic, and health difficulties. Unfortunately, most children go without effective support until they are teens, a time at which they are extremely susceptible for developing severe anxiety disorders. Without having a full understanding of anxiety and knowing what to look for, we can easily miss when anxiety shows up. Worse, many well-intentioned parents, teachers and professionals may unwittingly make anxiety stronger in their attempts to make children feel better.

2 Day Intensive: Working with Oppositional, Defiant & Anger Issues with Children & Adolescents Dear Participant, I am pleased to launch a new two-day intensive on my best-selling topic Working with Oppositional, Defiant and Anger Issues with Children and Adolescents. During our well received one-day workshops I covered theoretical practice as well as skills. The most common feedback I received was the desire for an additional day to dive deeper into these skills, ask questions about your most difficult cases, break into groups, brainstorm and practice. The two-day format will enable the time needed to successfully achieve this skills practice. Participants will explore the targeted intervention strategies I fondly refer to as “magic dust”. I have developed these skills based on the young clients I have treated individually or in a group setting. I currently maintain a private practice and serve as the director of an alternative education program. The skills we will practice are relevant for both classroom and clinical settings. My techniques have been successfully used in a range of environments from at school or home to institutional settings such as treatment centres and group homes. This program is designed to equip participants with applicable skills that can be implemented immediately for your most difficult students and clients. These strategies can be scaled up or scaled down in order to accommodate the needs of younger children, older children, adolescents and young adults. From novice to expert, anyone working with oppositional defiant clients is welcome to attend. This intensive will be highly practice-oriented. The format will provide video practice and introduce some of my most difficult cases and will highlight key aspects that can make or break a treatment session. I will demonstrate proven strategies that I use with children, adolescents, and young adults, as well as strategies that can be used with family members to help enhance the likelihood of success. Opportunities for team-focused brainstorming will be provided. Whether you are a returning participant looking to gain more skills practice or a new participant needing to acquire and practice skills for your ODD clients I look forward to the prospect of working with you this spring! The Neuropsychology of Learning Disabilities: Developing Evidenced-Based Reading, Writing, & Math Interventions The fundamental aim of this course is to utilize cognitive neuroscience to better understand learning disorders in children. This workshop has been designed to examine reading, writing, and math disorders from a brain-based educational perspective. The primary learning objectives will be to classify learning disabilities into distinct subtypes based upon neural pathways in the brain. There will be a detailed discussion linking each learning disability subtype with scores of evidenced based interventions. The Neuropsychology of Reading lectures will examine reading from a brain-based educational perspective, and classify developmental reading disorders into four distinct subtypes. The Neuropsychology of Written Language lectures will examine the cognitive underpinnings inherent within the writing process. The Neuropsychology of Mathematics lecture will explore how young children learn and acquire basic mathematical skills from a brain-based educational perspective. Specific pedagogical styles, the role of anxiety, and cultural differences in mathematics will be shared. There will be a discussion on three primary ways in which numbers are formatted in the brain, as well as the central role of language to expand upon conceptually ordered number sets.

Learning Objectives 1. Differentiate “developmental dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia” from other learning disorders, and discuss how schools can best screen for early learning pitfalls in children. 2. Introduce a brain-based educational model of reading, math, and written language disorders by classifying each disability into basic subtypes, with specific remediation strategies offered for each subtype. 3. Discuss the weaknesses in using an “aptitude-achievement” discrepancy model to identify learning disorders in children. Instead, a processing strengths and weaknesses model examining specific cognitive constructs associated with learning disorders in children will be featured.

Without having a full understanding of anxiety and knowing what to look for, we can easily miss when anxiety shows up. Worse, many well-intentioned parents, teachers, and professionals and may even unwittingly make anxiety stronger in their attempts to make children feel better. It is critical that all adults who may have to help children and teens with anxiety first develop a thorough understanding of what is going on for children and teens in today’s world, the pressures they face, and what happens when the demands put on them outweigh their capacity to cope. Then, they must learn what is truly effective to support this population and build their capacity to manage anxiety. Thankfully, anxiety is highly treatable. There are essential considerations for effective interventions that are not commonly known nor practiced but are easy to learn. This webinar is vital for anyone working with children and teens who experience anxiety. In this advanced workshop, clinicians, educators, and families will develop a deep understanding of anxiety from a transdiagnostic perspective. Special considerations are also given to Generations Z and Alpha and the specific stressors they face that contribute to anxiety and emotional dysregulation.

Smart But Scattered: Building Executive Skills with Children & Adolescents Executive skills are sometimes called “the hidden curriculum.” They are skills such as task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goal-directed persistence that are absolutely critical to school success, yet curriculum standards seldom if ever explicitly reference these skills. Neuroscientists now tell us that these skills take a minimum of 25 years to reach full maturation, and the course of that development is influenced by experience and exposure, by modelling, practice, and direct instruction. This workshop will provide participants with a framework for understanding these key skills, how they develop in diverse populations, and how to support executive skills by embedding them into classroom routines and lessons and by tailoring interventions to meet the needs of individual students and classrooms.

Learning Objectives 1. To describe the brain processes involved in executive skill development both in typically developing children and those with executive dysfunction (such as ADHD). 2. To identify how executive skills impact school performance and daily living. 3. “Best practices” in assessing executive skills, including both formal and informal measures. 4. To design interventions for improving executive skills in students, including 1) how to make environmental modifications to support weak executive skills, 2) how to develop protocols for teaching executive skills by embedding them in daily routines and classroom lessons, and 3) how to design student-centered interventions targeted to specific problem situations and executive skill challenges. 5. The critical features of a coaching method geared to improving school performance through supporting executive skill development.

Treating Trauma & Shame in Clinical Practice Shame and trauma are often linked.

DBT Skills Training for Mental Health Professionals

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a highly effective form of treatment for clients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). However, many of these individuals have rarely developed life skills to build a proactive and responsive life versus a defensive and reactive one. Dr. Eboni Webb will introduce a holistic approach to treatment and will expand on key concepts including skills acquisition, daily practice, and generalization. These skills are critical for our clients to develop an effective interdependent adult life. Dr. Webb will provide a brief discussion of DBT and its relationship to the Biosocial model, the neurological impact of trauma on the developing brain and how to address specific diagnoses via the skills. She will discuss the importance of integrating DBT skills at the earliest point of treatment and utilizing skills as a foundation for life.
