Brain imaging and other more recent research tools continue to discover variances in neuro-cellular, neuro-chemical, and neuro-functioning that underlie a vulnerability to develop substance-related and other addictive disorders. The brain anomalies associated with addictive disorders provide an understanding of the differences between the wide variety of drugs and behavioural compulsions. They also help to explain why some are more likely than others to relapse after treatment for their compulsive drug use or behaviours. The rapidly expanding field of Addiction Medicine provides new insights on preventing, assessing and treatment of addictions and related disorders. It is also providing more evidenced-based resources to better manage those struggling with these major mental health disorders. This presentation will explore the evolving science of Addiction and Recovery.

Many of the clients that we serve have such complex problems due to extensive trauma and attachment disturbances. These early wounds have informed their adult presentations resulting in mental illness and personality disorders. The poet William Wordsworth wrote in his poem, My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold (1802), “..the Child is father of the Man.” Future pioneering psychologists would be inspired by this passage as they came to understand that both function and dysfunction are born in childhood and guide us in our adult lives. In this course you will come to understand the impact of trauma on the developing mind and how attachment is formed or lost through traumatic events. You will learn how the brain is organized through healthy attachment and the critical elements of healthy attachment. We will examine the current neuroscience behind both trauma and attachment and the top evidence-based strategies to address key DSM-V disorder through the lens of trauma.

Author/Educator/Sexologist Rob Weiss Phd., LCSW will open this discussion with the recent World Health Organization (ICD-11) diagnosis of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) and its relationship to what we have typically called sex and/or porn addiction. The various myths surrounding sexual compulsivity/ addiction (what it is and what it isn’t) will be clarified, as he reviews typical types of sexual acting-out behaviors and the related consequences that are most indicative of sexual compulsivity/addiction.

jennifer sweeton, Psy.D. Harm Reduction — which recognizes and builds on the fluidity of humans and their ability to change — is the opposite of the disease theory. And while significant cracks have begun to appear in the disease theory’s dominance in North America, remarkably, harm reduction thinking often accepts fundamental disease theory conceptions — primarily that addiction occurs simply as a result of exposure to opioids, is NOT impacted by social setting, and is irreversible. Dr. Peele deploys data, common sense, and the audience’s personal experience to show how wrong-headed — and dangerous — this disease theory residue is, while he presents an alternative way of thinking and treatment. Trauma theory is discussed in this regard. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: • To become aware of how the basic disease theory of addiction — exposure = addiction — is imbedded in cultural thinking. • To understand how this thinking underlies our modern addiction and drug death epidemic.

Working with Compulsive and Self-Endangering Behaviours in Trauma Survivors

Cannabis is already part of the lives of many Canadians, and all health professionals who work with individuals who use cannabis or are cannabis-curious. Spend a day learning: What is THC? CBD ? Sativa? Indica? The many combinations? What’s recreational? What’s medical? Methods of delivery? When is it a problem? What’s for sale at the dispensary, the clinic or on the street? What are the questions to ask clients? What are the risks and benefits for anxiety, depression, trauma & psychosis?… and a lot more. Understanding the new cannabis landscape will help you to successfully engage with clients; to know how to question and explore cannabis use. This workshop will help you into leading edge research and lots of information you never learned in school. Zach Walsh is a Canadian psychologist and a leader in the field of cannabis and mental health. Trauma & the Struggle to Open Up:

Relational Strategies to Treat Challenging Trauma Clients

This practical workshop, led by Dr. Robert T. Muller, a leading expert on trauma therapy and globally-acclaimed author of the psychotherapy bestseller: Trauma & the Avoidant Client–is aimed at building your understanding of the psychotherapeutic relationship with challenging clients, particularly trauma clients. All clients present with some degree of traumatic affect, making this workshop suitable for all practitioners. While many of us try to maintain a good therapeutic relationship, this can be difficult. Trauma clients struggle to trust the therapist; many minimize their own traumatic experiences, or become help-rejecting. Others rush into the work, seeking a “quick fix,” despite a long history of interpersonal trauma. Through the lens of attachment theory, using a relational, integrative approach, Dr. Muller follows the ups and downs of the therapy relationship with trauma survivors.

The work of Mental Health Professionals and Therapists, can often make the world look and feel different. It is not uncommon that the pain witnessed becomes internalized and alters one’s own psychological and physical wellbeing. It is not uncommon that intense and powerful images, sounds, smells and tactile experiences become intrusive in everyday life. The impact on individuals as well as organizations can be barriers for successful delivery of services. Recognizing this and being good stewards of one’s trauma exposure response, as well as mitigating the collective impact on organizations, provides opportunities for enhanced services and sustainable staffing. Vicarious trauma awareness opens doors to resilience. Vicarious trauma awareness provides another tool to assist and heal those we attempt to support and serve.

john briere, Ph.D. Survivors of trauma and early attachment disturbance are at elevated risk of a variety compulsive and self-endangering behaviours, ranging from suicidality and self-injury to substance abuse, indiscriminate sexual activities, and binge eating. Many of these difficulties are seen as symptoms of a personality disorder, behavioural addiction, or impulse control disorder. However, emerging research indicates that they are more accurately understood as coping/homeostatic responses to triggered childhood memories and inadequate emotional regulation capacities. Calling on his upcoming book Triggered: An Integrated Approach to Trauma, Attachment Disturbance, and Risky Behaviour (Guilford), John Briere presents an innovative, integrated approach to selfendangering behaviour, the compensatory avoidance model.

Over the past couple of decades there has been an exciting merging of psychotherapy and neuroscience research that is revolutionizing clinical practice. Cognitive, affective, and social neuroscience research provides profound insight into the brain changes humans are capable of producing, as well as how childhood trauma (such as ACEs), and trauma more broadly, may negatively impact the brain. We are beginning to learn, through neuroscience research, how the brain can change with the practice of psychotherapeutic techniques that target and improve the functioning of specific brain structures. This seminar, led by clinical expert Dr. Jennifer Sweeton, shares the most up-to-date research discoveries on the neuroscience of childhood trauma, addiction, and PTSD, and teaches highly effective psychotherapy techniques clinicians can begin using tomorrow to help clients recover.

Youngsters at an earlier age are worried about their futures. Reports indicate that today’s teens are less able to deal with setbacks and obstacles.

Children come into this world with instinctual optimism and intrinsic motivation. Anxiety disorders are among the most common conditions diagnosed in children and adolescents and everyone feels anxious from time to time. Despite the prevalence of anxiety disorders, anxiety has been referred to as the “great masquerader” because it can present in surprising ways in and out of the classroom.

Major Depression. It’s one of the most difficult challenges a person can confront – and one of the most common presentations in clinical settings. It has multiple risk factors, diverse presentations, and varying levels of severity. No two clients are the same. The evidence based treatment literature is a jungle of findings, recommendations, and protocols. Faced with a new client, do you struggle through a one-size-fits-none protocol, or do you abandon the research base and strike out on your own? Perhaps the best answer is “neither.” Instead, you could view treatment as a set of evidence-based components selected based on the particulars of your client’s situation. Doing so, you can stay true to the need for research support for your treatment while truly building “a new therapy for every client.” This workshop will show you how. Along the way you’ll receive over 40 pdf forms, tools, and information sheets to use with your clients.

Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a treatment originally designed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD). In recent years it has been increasingly used to treat many other disorders because of its usefulness in treating clients unable to manage emotions.

We’ll look at the assessment process and see how assessment and diagnosis can be construed as opposites rather than synonyms. We’ll review risk factors – and how to improve the efficiency of your assessment using the Depression Map Questionnaire, which helps to identify areas for further inquiry. We’ll consider how to get the client on board with treatment, despite the discouragement and lack of motivation such clients generally exhibit. And we’ll examine two models of depression you can use to help your client understand both the problem and the treatment.

Kathy Morris, m.ed. Children diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) can present a monumental challenge to therapists, teachers, parents and siblings. ODD and other conduct problems are the single greatest reasons for referrals to outpatient and inpatient mental health settings for children, accounting for at least half of all referrals. Complicating the success of therapeutic interventions is the high rate of comorbidity with anxiety and depressive disorders or ADHD. Current research also correlates a variety of cognitive skill deficits including executive function, emotional regulation, language processing, and social processing. These complicating comorbidities and correlations mean that ODD often requires multidisciplinary assessment and components of mental health care, case management, and educational intervention for students and clients to improve. This dynamic two day workshop will address a full range of behavioural disturbances, from mild to severe, in order to identify the therapeutic techniques that have proven effective. Participants will review and discuss strategies which can be immediately applied across a variety of settings including home, community, social groups, classrooms, or therapeutic. Participants will examine the intersection of ODD with a variety of issues such as trauma, ADD, learning disabilities, bipolar disorder, and depression and discuss how these affect and alter treatment decisions. Participants will leave this workshop with a much improved diagnostic and treatment approach to ODD and other behavioural disorders.

Children and adolescents who struggle with self-regulation often look like those who just aren’t paying attention, have difficulty with emotional control, blurting out answers, have difficulty making transitions and/or purposely not controlling themselves. They may be unaware of the connections of their behaviour and the consequences of the behaviour. If you don’t have self-regulation, you may act out, get placed in timeout, sent to the principal’s office, then miss important learning time. A downward spiral occurs as the student gets more upset and continues to act out when given punitive consequences. Executive functioning changes radically over the first few years, continues to improve quickly throughout adolescent years and, finally, during early adulthood years, the frontal lobes and prefrontal lobes are activated and connected to other regions of the brain. Executive function skills can be trained. It’s just like going to the gym. The more one practices these strategies for metacognition and selfregulation, the neural connections will be strengthened. The beginnings of executive function and self-regulation skills appear in the neurotypical brain around 4 years of age. However, what happens when the prefrontal lobe and frontal cortex are compromised due to faulty brain wiring and sensory traffic jams, such as seen in autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorders, anxiety disorders, mood disturbances, behaviour disorders, posttraumatic disorders, poverty, attachment disorders? This two-day seminar will address practical strategies that meet the needs of those children and adolescents who are impacted by these differences in their brain maturation. However, the participant will realize that these strategies apply to ALL students! The purpose is to provide practical tools for those clinicians, educators, therapists or parents who are directly involved in working with children and adolescents. This seminar is designed for those who are “working in the trenches.”

Gordon Neufeld, ph.d. Once we understand how bullies are made, our attempts to unmake them can be truly effective and longlasting. Most prevailing approaches to this problem assume that bullying is either learned behaviour or the result of failure to acquire social skills. In contrast, Dr. Neufeld dissects the bully syndrome to reveal its deep instinctive roots in the dynamics of attachment and vulnerability. The Bully Enigma: Most attempts to change bullies, or even to teach them a lesson, are not only futile but counterproductive. The reason for this is that most interventions are blind, devoid of an understanding of what makes a bully in the first place. Part of the problem is that the bully is an enigma. There are at least three reasons for this. First of all, very few bullies would identify themselves as such or confess to the act. Secondly, bullies lack self-reflection and so cannot tell us about themselves. Thirdly, the violating nature of the bully’s behaviour distracts from the salient issues and underlying dynamics. The symptoms are social but the dysfunction is psychological. The arena of violation is in children`s relating to each other but the genesis of the problem is in relationship to adults. The demeanor is one of toughness yet the sensitivity to slight is acute. The behaviour is pushy and demanding yet the personality is highly dependent and immature. Unless we can shed some light into the internal workings of the bully, our interventions will inevitably be off base.
