A Message from Melanie Alsager April, 2021 Dear Fellow Conference Attendees, On behalf of the entire team at Sunshine Coast Health Centre and Georgia Strait Women’s Clinic, we do hope you will join us for The Western Canada Mental Health Summit being held the 21 st of April, 2021. We are, once again, pleased to be co-sponsoring an event with Jack Hirose & Associates, Canada’s premier psychotherapy conference organizer. Now, more than ever, we at SCHC/GSWC recognize the importance of having a place to network with the psychotherapy community and train our staff. The pandemic has been challenging for us all—as individuals, as family members, and as members of the community. Change is often necessary during a crisis and we support Jack’s decision to make this year’s event virtual. Furthermore, we are excited that, for the first time, this year’s event will be open to the public. Together, as committed stakeholders, I believe we can better address the growing challenge of mental health in our communities. Thanks to all of you for your dedication. Whether you are personally or professionally invested in this important topic, I am confident that attending this event’s slate of world-class experts will be a meaningful experience. See you in April! Melanie Alsager, MBA Chief Executive Officer Sunshine Coast Health Centre & Georgia Straight Women’s Clinic
Upcoming Virtual Mental Health Summit Conference On behalf of Jack Hirose and Associates, I would like to thank our major sponsors, Sunshine Coast Health Centre, Georgia Straight Women’s Clinic and CTV for agreeing to join us in our effort to help individuals who are struggling with mental health issues during an unprecedented global health crisis. I am indebted to all our guest presenters who have graciously agreed to participate in the conference and share their expert knowledge as it relates to topics that are negatively impacting individuals, workplaces, and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our world class group of presenters will address a host of topics including: stress management, grief, trauma, social isolation, fear, anxiety and depression. The pandemic has highlighted how crucial mental health resources are to one’s overall well-being. Mental health services, resources and supports must be made available to help all individuals who are struggling with mental health issues not only during the present crisis but for many years afterwards. It is our hope that the conference will help professionals and all individuals who are interested in learning more about mental health to keep up to date, learn new coping strategies and help adjust to the new normal as we work our way through the pandemic. Jack Hirose, M.A. President & CEO

Conference Agenda 8:15am – 8:30am
Introduction
8:30am – 10:00am The Hungry Ghost: A Biopsychosocial Perspective on Addiction, from Heroin to Workaholism
presented by Gabor Maté, M.D. For twelve years Dr. Maté was the staff physician at a clinic for drug-addicted people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where he worked with patients challenged by hard-core drug addiction, mental illness and HIV, including at Vancouver Supervised Injection Site. In his most recent bestselling book In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts, he shows that their addictions do not represent a discrete set of medical disorders; rather, they merely reflect the extreme end of a continuum of addiction, mostly hidden, that runs throughout our society. 10:00am – 10:15am Break 10:15am – 11:45am The Hungry Ghost: A Biopsychosocial Perspective on Addiction, from Heroin to Workaholism continued
presented by Gabor Maté, M.D. 11:45am – 12:30pm Lunch Break 12:30pm – 1:30pm Harm Reduction, The Disease Model and Trauma presented by Stanton Peele, Ph.D.
Harm Reduction — which recognizes and builds on the fluidity of humans and their ability to change — is the opposite of the disease theory. And while significant cracks have begun to appear in the disease theory’s dominance in North America, remarkably, harm reduction thinking often accepts fundamental disease theory conceptions — primarily that addiction occurs simply as a result of exposure to opioids, is NOT impacted by social setting, and is irreversible. 1:30pm – 1:45pm
Break
1:45pm – 2:45pm
Trauma and Attachment Across the Lifespan presented by Eboni Webb, Psy.D., HSP Working with emotionally-dysregulated and traumatized children and teens in your practice can be overwhelming and exhausting. You probably feel the pull of being the “saviour” for dysregulated children and their worried parents. Learn how to develop the skills needed to be more effective in treatment, avoid burnout and achieve positive outcomes through developing an integrative lens to more effectively treat trauma and attachment across the lifespan.
2:45pm – 3:00pm Break 3:00pm – 4:00pm Current Science of Addiction Recovery: Dispelling the Stigma presented by Darryl S. Inaba, Pharm.D.
Brain imaging and other more recent research tools continue to discover variances in neuro-cellular, neurochemical, and neuro-functioning that underlie a vulnerability to develop substance-related and other addictive disorders. The brain anomalies associated with addictive disorders provide an understanding of the differences between the wide variety of drugs and behavioural compulsions. 4:00pm – 4:15pm
Break
4:15pm – 5:15pm
Transforming Cultural Trauma into Resilience presented by Martin Brokenleg, Ed.D. Indigenous North Americans have experienced trauma as have many other populations around the world. Intergenerational Trauma is caused by experiences of war, residential schools, slavery, and social oppression. Trauma is cumulative and required a clear understanding of its symptoms to be identified and cured. Courts and social services increasingly identify and consider the impact of trauma on clients. This one-hour session explores intergenerational trauma, identifies its major symptoms, and examines some healing strategies.

Feeling Great: A New, High-Speed Treatment for Depression & Anxiety David Burns, M.D. Research indicates that most, if not all, current treatments for depression and anxiety are barely more effective than placebos, if at all. In most studies, fewer than half of the patients even experience a 50% reduction in depression after many months of treatment. Research also suggests that therapeutic failure nearly always results from patient resistance that hasn’t been skillfully addressed. Most depressed patients believe they’re damaged, defective, or just “not good enough.” Perhaps you’ve felt that way at times. And although your patients may yearn for change, many of them seem to cling to feelings of depression and worthlessness, as well as the distorted thoughts that trigger these feelings. Why? In this workshop, you’ll learn about the two forms of resistance that can undermine the treatment of depression and anxiety. You will also learn how to quickly eliminate resistance and open the door to ultra-rapid recovery. Doctor Burns will bring these incredible methods to life with inspiring and dramatic video clips from live therapy sessions with two women recovered from years of depression, anxiety, shame, and anger in a single, two-hour therapy session.
FEELING GREAT 7 Hours

David Burns, M.D. Live therapy demonstrations with audience volunteers have always been one my most illuminating and helpful teaching tools. You get to see, in real time, what works, and what doesn’t work, and why. In addition, when you see rapid changes in the person I am working with, you will gain a far deeper appreciation of how therapy actually works, and what genuine recovery means. In this workshop, you will have the unique opportunity to go behind closed doors and see how TEAM-CBT actually works with someone who is struggling with feelings of insecurity and self-doubt. When you witness the rapid transformation of feelings of sadness and anxiety into feelings of joy, relief, and enlightenment, you will feel much better about your own flaws, and you will discover some awesome new tools that can improve your clinical outcomes. This promises to be an exciting, educational and inspirational experience! It may be a little scary for all of us, because I will be working with someone I don’t know, live and in real time! No role-playing here! At the same time, the learning potential will be considerable. Approximately two hours will be devoted to the actual therapy demonstration, including teaching points as the session evolves, and approximately two hours will be devoted to the discussion and exercises following the demonstration to help you master key techniques that can greatly improve your clinical work as well as your own feelings of self-esteem.

You will also see inspiring and dramatic video clips from actual therapy sessions that will bring these new techniques to life. You will learn how to crush each of the ten familiar cognitive distortions, with methods such as Positive Reframing, Best/Worst/Average, Be Specific, the Externalization of Voices, Let’s Define Terms, the Socratic Technique, the Survey Technique, the Experimental Technique, Examine the Evidence, the Acceptance Paradox, the Feared Fantasy, and more. Smart But Scattered Adults: How to Work With Clients to Strengthen Executive Skills peg dawson, ed.D., ncsp Even highly motivated clients with ADHD struggle to follow through on the changes they need to make in their lives to improve their physical or emotional well-being. They know they need to change, they know what they need to do to change, they may even be able to take a step or two toward making those changes—and then they plateau or give up. What’s getting in the way is not their unwillingness or resistance to change, but weak executive skills. Executive skills are underlying brain processes that help people manage their everyday lives, get things done, control their emotions, and help them manage obstacles that interfere with productivity and behavior change. Experts on ADHD now recognize that deficits in executive functioning lie at the root of this disorder. The frontal lobes, where executive skills are managed, don’t reach full maturation in typical adults until the middle of the third decade of life; in individuals with ADHD, a developmental lag slows down the process still further. As a result, many adults with ADHD fail to finish college, hold down a job or progress in a career, and struggle to maintain satisfactory relationships with friends and family. Failure and the recognition that they are working well below their potential erode selfconfidence, eat away at self-esteem, and may lead to other mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. This seminar, led by one of the authors of some of the most popular and well-regarded books on the topic, including The Smart but Scattered Guide to Success, will share cutting edge neuroscience on executive functioning and will provide practical strategies clinicians can use with ADHD clients to help them work around or overcome the obstacles presented by weak executive skills. Armed with the knowledge gained in this seminar, participants will be able to help their clients assess their own executive skill strengths and weaknesses and create an action plan that is realistic and leads to true and lasting change.

Helping Clients Heal from Self-Harm: A DBT Approach for Teens Sheri Van Dijk, MSW, RSW Self-harm, or non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is most common among adolescents and young adults. Although NSSI typically decreases in late adolescence, this behavior is one of the strongest antecedents of suicide in youth; and those who engage in repetitive NSSI seem to be at high risk for continuing to use dysfunctional emotion regulation strategies, even after discontinuing NSSI. People engage in NSSI for a wide array of reasons (including a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, or BPD), but usually this involves an inability to manage emotions in some way, making Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) an ideal treatment for this population. While most mental health clinicians will encounter NSSI at some point, there is still a paucity of research about this behaviour and why it happens; and education programs rarely teach about this behaviour and how to work with clients who are engaging in it. This workshop will help you understand NSSI, factors to consider when assessing and working with clients, and will take a DBT approach to helping clients eliminate this behaviour.
Learning Objectives 1. How to define Non-suicidal Self-Injury and some of the statistics related to this 2. Tools to help you not freak out when you find out your client is self-harming 3. Reasons teens self-harm and ways to help yourself, your client, and their family understand the behaviour 4. How to effectively assess for self-harm and tools to help improve commitment to treatment, building rapport and trust 5. Overview of some DBT skills and strategies to work toward eliminate self-harming behaviours

EMDR: A Rapid & Proven Treatment for Trauma Jennifer Sweeton, Psy.D., M.S., M.A. Dear Participant, EMDR is by far my most in demand workshop topic, perhaps due to its strong evidence base for PTSD treatment, and the ease with which it can be integrated into therapists’ existing skill sets. For clinicians working with trauma, learning the resource and exposure skills of EMDR is critical, as they can help clients recover quickly, and many clients will ask for this modality by name. Participants attending this 2-day intensive training will learn the original 8-phase model of EMDR, including target sequence planning, resourcing, desensitization, installation, and body scanning for both trauma and anxiety treatment. While the “whys” and “hows” of EMDR will be discussed, this training will emphasize learning through demonstrations and hands-on practice, which prepare participants to begin EMDR skills in their practice right away. Whether you are an experienced EMDR therapist looking to brush up on and add to your skills, or a therapist completely new to EMDR, I am eager to work with you! -Jennifer Sweeton, PsyD, MS, MA

Psychedelics & Psychedelic-assisted Psychotherapy Primer Zachary Walsh, Ph.D. Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy has been described as the most important new development in mental health treatment in the last 50 years. The past decade has witnessed and incredible resurgence in interest in the potential of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy to address diverse mental health concerns and several psychedelic medicines are nearing approval as prescription medications. This workshop will get you up to date on this emerging therapy. Spend a day learning: What is the history of these ancient medicines and how have they been used by the Indigenous peoples of the Americas? What are the similarities and differences among psilocybin, magic mushrooms, ayahuasca, DMT, LSD, MDMA, ecstasy, and ketamine? What does psychedelic psychotherapy look like? What is the legal status of these medicines? When and how can health care professionals get involved in using these medicines for addressing mental health and what might change over the next decade? What does the research tell us about clinical efficacy? What is micro dosing? What are the risks and benefits for anxiety, depression, trauma & addiction?… and a lot more. Understanding the new psychedelic landscape will help you to successfully engage with clients and students; to know how to explore psychedelic use and interest. This workshop will help you into leading edge research and lots of information you never learned in school.

Grief Therapy as Meaning Reconstruction: 4 Part Online Series Featuring Dr. Robert Neimeyer Robert Neimeyer, Ph.D. Part One: Death may end a life, but not necessarily a relationship. Drawing on an attachment-informed and Two-Track models of bereavement, we will begin by considering grieving as a process of reconstructing rather than relinquishing our bonds with those who have died, and the circumstances that can interfere with this natural process. Clinical videos bearing on a range of losses will sensitize learners to various impediments to reorganizing the “back story” of the ongoing relationship with the deceased, as we also note several techniques that can help move such work forward. Part Two: Whether they are striving to restore a sense of secure attachment to a loved one lost to death or to resolve lingering relational issues with the deceased, mourners frequently need to reengage those they have lost rather than relinquish the bond and “move on.” In this program we will explore and practice several creative narrative, emotion-focused and conversational methods for re-introducing the deceased into the social and psychological world of the bereaved, fostering a sustaining sense of connection and alliance with the loved one in embracing a changed future, and working through issues of guilt, anger and abandonment triggered by the death and the shared life that preceded it. Part Three: As contemporary models of bereavement have become more nuanced and empirically informed, so too have the practices available to counsellors and therapists who work with complicated, prolonged and debilitating forms of grief. This module offers in-depth training in several of these techniques, nesting them both within the therapy relationship and in the context of current theories and research that provide flexible, trauma-informed frameworks for intervention. Part Four: Adaptive grieving implies integrating the loss into our changed sense of who we are, as well as into the changed story of our lives. In this module we consider two techniques for helping mourners discern the deeper significance of their experience, and in doing so identify the important needs and life lessons implicit in them. First, we will learn to listen between the lines of the stories clients tell themselves and others about the death to grasp more fully the unvoiced meaning of their grief, which often resides at the level of their embodied emotion.

The Anxiety Compass: Helping Children & Teens Tame Anxiety Gremlins Caroline Buzanko, Ph.D., r.psych Anxiety is at epidemic levels and is the most common mental health concern among children and teens. Anxiety is not something you outgrow, and early intervention is important to minimize later problems with depression and other social, emotional, behavioural, and health difficulties. Unfortunately, most kids go without effective support until they are teens, a time at which they are extremely susceptible for developing severe anxiety disorders. Since 70% of all mental health problems begin in childhood and adolescence, there is a clear need to support this population. Without knowing what to look for, many parents, teachers, and even professionals can easily miss when anxiety shows up and may even unwittingly make anxiety stronger. It is essential that all adults first develop a thorough understanding of what is going on for children and teens in today’s world, the pressures they face, and what happens when the demands put on them outweigh their capacity to cope. Then, they can learn what is truly effective to support these kids and teens to build their capacity to manage anxiety. Thankfully, anxiety is highly treatable. There are essential considerations for effective interventions that are not commonly known nor practiced but are easy to learn. This webinar is vital for anyone working with children and teens who experience anxiety. In this advanced workshop, clinicians, educators, and families will develop a deep understanding of anxiety from a transdiagnosis perspective. Special considerations are also given to our Generations Z and Alpha and the specific stressors they face that contribute to anxiety and emotional dysregulation. Participants will also learn effective tools and processes to help these populations manage their anxiety across contexts to promote their overall courage, confidence, resilience, and well-being.

Making Sense of Attachment: Neufeld’s Comprehensive Model for All Ages & Applications Gordon Neufeld, ph.d. The science of relationship currently exists in fragmented bits and pieces all over the empirical map: biology, sociology, embryology, ethology, epigenetics, neuroscience, psychology, medicine, psychology, and so on. The irony is that we have never known more about the relational context required for parenting, teaching and treatment, and yet this knowledge is failing to inform our everyday practice and policy. According to Neufeld, this failure of implementation may stem from the current lack of theoretical coherence as well as the esoteric language typical to these fields of inquiry. Neufeld’s unique contribution is to put the puzzle pieces together to create a coherent model of attachment, using language that is accessible to all. His theoretical giftedness has been well-grounded in professional practice and well-rounded from a lifetime of teaching. Neufeld’s model of attachment is based not only on a solid knowledge of spontaneous developmental processes but also upon current understandings of instinct and emotion gleaned from brain science. It offers a refreshing alternative to more restricted typology models of attachment as well as to the prevailing non-attachment models of learning and disorder. Many have found that his comprehensive model of attachment will resonate with their intuition as well as generate both insight and guidance for intervention.
Author
Models of human behaviour are evaluated not only upon a lack of conflicting evidence, but also upon their power to explain and predict, and the clarity of implications for practice. This model has received high praise on all accounts. The implications for implementation are certainly clear and in many cases surprisingly opposite to current practice. In addition, this model of attachment sheds light on various dynamics and phenomena that have puzzled experts for years.

Neufeld’s FIVE Steps to Emotional Health & Maturity Gordon Neufeld, ph.d.
*For those working with children, adolescents and adults
Emotional health is increasingly becoming our collective objective, despite a lack of common knowledge regarding what this actually looks like or how to get there. At the same time, emotional health and emotional maturity appear to be increasingly elusive in today’s society, so much so that immaturity could well be considered epidemic in the adult population. It is notable that emotional health and emotional maturity are conspicuously missing in all major behaviour problems, syndromes and disorders. As it turns out, emotional health and emotional maturation are not only core issues but also intricately linked, so much so that the constructs are inseparable. Given this, it should be no surprise that that there is a significant developmental aspect to these dynamics. Doing what he does best, Dr. Neufeld has put the puzzle pieces together to reveal five developmental steps to emotional health and maturity. His model is easy to follow and has become a template for a growing number of therapists. The five-step model reveals the most common pitfall in working with the immature, regardless of age – attempting to treat the symptoms at the level where they occur rather than retreating to the underlying developmental prerequisite where the problem is most likely to exist. Dr. Neufeld’s model provides clear insights as to the nature of emotional maturity or its lack, as well as the way through to removing the impediments to emotional stuckness. These insights and resulting practices are applicable to every venue – home, school and treatment, as well as every age group – infancy through old age. As always, Dr. Neufeld focuses on how problems develop in childhood and adolescence as a way of creating a foundation for healing and treatment throughout the lifespan. Although the course is addressed primarily to helping professionals and educators, the material is very helpful to parents, as well as for self-understanding and healing. The Neuropsychology of Learning Disabilities: Developing Evidenced-Based Reading, Writing, & Math Interventions Steven G. Feifer, D.Ed., ABSNP The fundamental aim of this course is to utilize cognitive neuroscience to better understand learning disorders in children. Each lecture has been designed to examine reading, writing, and math disorders from a brain-based educational perspective. The primary learning objectives will be to classify learning disabilities into distinct subtypes based upon neural pathways in the brain. There will be a detailed discussion linking each learning disability subtype with scores of evidenced based interventions. Lastly, the role of diagnostic achievements tests that directly link assessment results with targeted interventions will be introduced with specific case studies included as well. Reading: The Neuropsychology of Reading lectures will examine reading from a brain-based educational perspective, and classify developmental reading disorders into four distinct subtypes. An initial discussion will examine literacy rates in Canada and the United States, followed by a working definition of dyslexia. Next, there will be a discussion on multiple cognitive constructs involved with reading including phonological processing, working memory, executive functioning, and orthographical processing skills. Writing: The Neuropsychology of Written Language lectures will examine the cognitive underpinnings inherent within the writing process. There will be a discussion on national trends in written language, as well as gender differences in achieving proficient writing skills. In addition, three specific subtypes of writing disorders, with particular emphasis on how “frontal lobe” processes such as working memory and executive functioning impact each subtype, will be discussed as well. Mathematics: The Neuropsychology of Mathematics lecture will explore how young children learn and acquire basic mathematical skills from a brain-based educational perspective. Specific pedagogical styles, the role of anxiety, and cultural differences in mathematics will be shared. There will be a discussion on three primary ways in which numbers are formatted in the brain, as well as the central role of language to expand upon conceptually ordered number sets. Feifer, D.Ed., ABSNP This workshop will explore the neural underpinnings of stress, trauma, and emotional dysfunction in children and its relative impact upon learning. Environmental deprivation, poverty, childhood abuse, witnessing violence, and pandemics can impact both cognitive and social-emotional development in children. There will be a discussion on five steps that schools can take to become “trauma-informed”, in order to better meet the diverse needs of all learners. Schools can enhance emotional wellness through early prevention efforts, appropriate assessment and screening techniques, and an improved school climate to foster emotional growth for all children. Targeted assessment strategies, specific classroom accommodations, and key coping strategies will be presented for at-risk students.
Learning Objectives 1. Discuss the prevalence of trauma and stress for school aged children, as well as the various sources from which trauma can occur. 2. Explore key brain regions that are impacted when students experience trauma, and the subsequent effect on academic and social skills’ development. 3. Building Executive Skills with Children & Adolescents peg dawson, ed.D., ncsp Executive skills are sometimes called “the hidden curriculum.” They are skills such as task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goal-directed persistence that are absolutely critical to school success, yet curriculum standards seldom if ever explicitly reference these skills. Neuroscientists now tell us that these skills take a minimum of 25 years to reach full maturation, and the course of that development is influenced by experience and exposure, by modelling, practice, and direct instruction. This workshop will provide participants with a framework for understanding these key skills, how they develop in diverse populations, and how to support executive skills by embedding them into classroom routines and lessons and by tailoring interventions to meet the needs of individual students and classrooms.
