Zaijian Jaranilla had every Kapamilya believing in miracles and in “Bro” when he portrayed Santino in May Bukas Pa. He started out as one of the gang in the gag show Goin’ Bulilit. He has kept busy ever since, playing the title role in Lorenzo’s Time in 2012 and as Emong in Hawak Kamay. Zaijan is on a roll, already making his mark in the audience’s hearts.

Also in the cast of Hawak Kamay is another Kapamilya discovery, Xyriel Manabat. She won Best Child Actress in the 2010 MMFF, just a year after she joined the entertainment biz through Star Circle Quest: Search for the Next Kiddie Idol. After she placed third Runner-Up, she took part in several TV shows. She was able to show her acting prowess when she played the young Agua and Bendita in Agua Bendita and, later on, when she played the lead in Momay. Xyriel also played key roles in Noah and 100 Days to Heaven. This Kapamilya is just getting started, and greater things are sure to come her way.

Another Kapamilya former child star might leave his career in favor of his studies. Makisig Morales, best known as Super Inggo, had an early start in showbiz. At the age of five, he sang in the variety show MTB. He went on to be part of ABS-CBN’s Little Big Star, a show that he eventually hosted. The now 17-year old Makisig remains active and was last seen in the teleserye Mirabella. However, he is now entertaining the idea of following the rest of his family who have migrated to Australia and studying film directing there. In time, Makisig may prove that his superpowers can work behind the camera as well.

So ang sa akin, if I decide to run at siguro nagkataon na may interview na mangyari, I’ll be open about it or siguro makikita ako sa filing. But as of this moment I’m taking everything in, all sides, both the pros and cons kung sakaling tumakbo ako, ano yung mga kailangan. Andun pa ako sa lagay na yun,” he explained. Another consideration for Luis if he does run is prioritizing politics over show business. “I would like to take it easy, way easy. Kasi kung saka sakaling tumakbo ako, the voters need my undivided attention. It would be very unfair sa isang botante kung tatakbo ako tapos ipapagkatiwala nila sa akin buong buhay nila, especially for a first timer pero hati yung attention ko. Napakaunfair sa tao na yung tiwala na yun na isusulat yung pangalan mo sa ballot. So kung sakali I’d have to really slow down sa mga ginagawa ko para sa showbiz,” he said. Luis said he is already thankful for his mom’s vote of confidence. Vilma Santos recently admitted she had gone through some depression after her longtime aide Aida Fandialan passed away earlier this year. “Sana nga naman my mom respects my decision

When asked how serious he is about calling Angel Locsin his soon-to-be-wife, Luis further stressed that he meant what he said. “Dun naman papunta lahat ng bagay. We’re taking everything in stride,” he added. After turning down a chance to do a movie with his mom and Angel next year, Luis said he is excited to see both of his favorite ladies on the big screen in one film. “Nabasa ko nga yun. I read it online. Hopefully, I would love to see them together. Yung movie pa lang nila excited na ako eh. I think they’re starting very, very soon,” he admitted.

In an interview with Dingdong during the recently-concluded press conference of his Metro Manila Film Festival entry, Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2, Dingdong shared that he wants to have a baby by 2015. Dingdong and Marian are set to wed on December 30 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao. With Dingdong keen on becoming a dad soon, he just brushed off the idea that he made it to the Top 20 2016 Senatorial election survey. “If you ask me right now I really don’t have any plans. Sa ngayon po talaga ang concentration ko talaga is to build my family,” he claimed.

As to the question of the number of kids that they plan to have, Dingdong echoed Marian’s previous statement that he’s also up for “as many as they both can.” Meanwhile, with their wedding happening in less than three weeks, Dingdong shared that they have yet to pick a honeymoon venue. Although one thing is certain, they are taking a leave after their big day. “Humingi po kami ng leave pero sandali lang. ‘Yung sa akin mga less than a month. The actor-producer shared that the reason why his leave with Marian would be short was because he’s set to host a reality show next year while Marian is slated to be part of a soap opera. Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2 is one of the eight entries in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival come December 25.

He will be back on TV soon as part of the Marvin Agustin-Jolina Magdangal comeback teleserye Flordeliza.

Almost 12 years since the teen-oriented show Berks ended, Push.com.ph gives a rundown of what has become of the endearing cast.

Ketchup remains active as an actor both on TV and on the big screen. He appeared as a pediatrician on Be Careful With My Heart and John Lloyd Cruz’ officemate on Home Sweetie Home. He was most recently seen at the Ipaglaban Mo episode titled “Ibigay Ang Aming Karapatan” together with returning actor JM de Guzman.

After playing the role of Simon, Cholo Barretto, the nephew of controversial actress Claudine Barretto, had a few projects every now and then, the most recent of which was the highly-acclaimed indie 10,000 Hours starring Robin Padilla and the box office hit Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo? He made headlines last May for accepting an award on behalf of his aunt and speaking up about the ongoing feud in their family.

Karel who played Penelope has remained an active part of showbiz and also dabbled in the makeup business. She is a single mom of two kids aged five and three after parting ways with her children’s father early in 2012. She has found new love in a man named Sean. She recently became a hurado on ABS-CBN’s noontime show It’s Showtime.

Marc who was known as the lanky Oreo on the teen show has turned into a sports enthusiast. While he has put his showbiz career on hold to finish his college degree, Marc has returned to his acting roots. He has been quoted as saying that he dreams of working with Iza Calzado. He appeared on GMA’s drama series Adarna.

After playing Javier on the teen show, John instead shifted to comedy, hosting, and dancing and is one of the regulars of gag show Banana Split. Like ex-girlfriend Heart, he also recently topped headlines after popping the question to longtime girlfriend Isabel Oli, flash mob-style. The couple are set to wed May of next year.

Allyzon, like Ketchup, has also been active in doing character roles ever since she retired her role as Jennifer on Berks. She was last seen in the dark comedy film Tuhog starring Eugene Domingo just last year while her last soap was Imortal starring John Lloyd Cruz and Angel Locsin back in 2010. Allyzon currently dabbles in destination photography while finishing her MBA degree.

She was formerly known as Carolina on Munting Paraiso and Pamela Sue on Berks. While the teen show has been her breakthrough project in the business, not too many remember that she has actually been part of different shows after it ended. She used to be a “tadjock” or a segment host of the comedic news program Wazzup Hazel’s Ann’s subdued aura gave life to her character Brooke. The show has opened a lot of doors for this FilipinaSpanish actress as she starred in several other soaps such like Gulong ng Palad which starred Kristine Hermosa and the romance-based program Love Spell for the episode Charm & Crystal in 2006. She transferred networks and then returned to ABS-CBN after a few years. Her comeback project was the sexy soap Eva Fonda which starred Cristine Reyes. After that, Hazel has opted to live a simple life outside of the limelight.

To most teens during late 2002, Heart was Berks’ Gwyneth, Javier’s love interest. Although she has been active all through the years as a host, actress, and sometimes as a singer, Heart has recently and incessantly hogged headlines after she got into a relationship with lawmaker Chiz Escudero. The bride-to-be is set to walk down the aisle with her fiance come February next year.

Coming right on the heels of his announcement that he will be making a movie with Skylight films, Star Cinema’s sister company, Derek Ramsay shared that his contract with his mother network is ending soon. In an exclusive interview with Derek recently at the blogger’s conference of his upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival entry English Only, Please, he shared that his contract with TV5 will end by March. “The truth there is the offer has been made. We’re going to sit down and meet. It’s with Skylight so natuwa ako na they called and asked if I would be interested,” he shared about his supposed impending project with Skylight. When news of his upcoming meeting with Skylight broke out, many thought that Derek was finally patching things up with his former network. But for Derek, there really is no need for him to mend ties with ABS-CBN because, “For me it’s been behind me for the longest time.” Derek’s controversial transfer happened in 2012 which took its toll on his relationship with ABS-CBN. This was a speculation that was further strengthened by reports that Anne Curtis wasn’t even allowed to mention his name while she was promoting her movie with him on Kapamilya shows. “I left ABS thinking everything was okay because it was a long process. I went through the proper procedures. I got a very nice letter from the boss saying that he appreciates my honesty, saddened by the decision but you know he said that he hopes that our paths would meet again one day,” he explained. “And maybe this is it. This project with Star Cinema and it could be the start of bigger things.” He added that, “I have nothing against ABS. I have nothing against Star Cinema. Tapos na ‘yun eh. Matagal na sakin tapos na ‘yun. So, it’s nice that they made the offer. Kung matuloy man o hindi masaya na ako na at least tumawag sila para mag-offer kung interesado akong gumawa ng pelikula.” With his TV contract ending soon enough, does this mean that his fans could see him again as a Kapamilya? “My priority is to see what 5 wants to do with my career. If they no longer need my services then that’s when I’ll open my doors to other things,” he confessed. According to Derek, he’s currently in negotiations with his current home network which Derek says has been good to him. “I’m very appreciative of what they’ve done so I have to give them that respect. Just like channel 2, channel 2 did a lot for me. May mga bumps in the road but that’s why it led to certain decisions but you know that’s life, there’s always bumps in the road. I will always be grateful for what Channel 2 has done for me and they’re a big part of who I am, where I am,” he said.

Despite having been part of at least 18 plays to date, former Star in A Million second runner up OJ Mariano still has qualms about venturing to Broadway or West End. In an exclusive interview with Push.com.ph at the recently-concluded press conference of the rerun of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert musical, he said that he would always prefer to perform in front of his own kababayans. “Parang I don’t know, I would rather perform for the Filipino audience. It’s a nice feeling. But I’m not saying yet na if ever something comes along I wouldn’t take it. It’s not in my mind now na venturing into an international arena. Maybe not yes,” he said. Another reason was OJ’s obvious distrust of his own acting skills. “Kasi feeling ko I’m not there yet. Hindi pa ako international caliber,” OJ explained. But OJ has nothing against artists like Rachelle Ann Go and Mark Bautista who are both making waves in London. “Hindi naman kasi it’s actually bringing honor rin to the Filipino talent kasi they get recognized as Filipinos for their amazing talent,” he said about the issue whether actors who decide to leave the country for an international production is considered betrayal. He just reiterated that “It’s just that for me hindi pa eh, kailangan ko pang i-equip ang sarili ko. Hindi ko pa nafe-feel na I’m there yet to present myself to an international audience., Parang if ever I will do that, gusto ko alam ko sa sarili ko ‘Okay this is it, ito ang ma-o-offer sayo ng Filipino talent na full force.’” OJ’s first foray into the theater happened in 2010 for his first-ever musical Rent. “‘Yun I auditioned for that kasi I was a huge fan of the show and then after that I became part of a DUP [Dulaang UP] production. Siguro I just got so fortunate na lahat ng ino-audition-an ko I get in. So kaya siya nagdere-derecho. It’s a huge, huge blessing na na-welcome ako ng theater industry,” he said. Doesn’t he miss being part of the mainstream scene? “Not so much kasi sobrang minahal ko kung nasaan ako ngayon and I think it’s more gratifying for me. It’s a personally more gratifying experience, being part of the theater,” OJ noted. Prior to joining the theater scene, OJ used to be a backup singer and occasional performer in a number of Kapamilya shows. Whatever success he’s had and whatever lessons he’s learned, OJ attributed to his personal desire to learn about theater and not through a professional training. “Parang I was shoved into this you know that feeling when you feel that you’re inadequate? Sobrang English lang. Nag-workshop pa ako for three months para mkapag-Tagalog and hindi pa rin ako fluent. During the recent blogger’s night for the MMFF film entry My Big Bossing, Vic Sotto was all praises for child actress Ryzza Mae Dizon, whom he actually credits for coming up with the idea of one of the episodes in the movie trilogy while taping for one of their regular TV shows. “Dun sa episode ng Sirena, kung tutuusin siya sumulat nung script na yun eh. Dun sa isang show namin tinanong niya si Bibeth Orteza, ‘Direk puwede ba ako maging sirena?’ Gusto kasi niya maging sirena, isa sa mga pantasya niya yun. Eh mukha namang butanding paano mangyayari? (laughs). So tinanong siya ano ng gagawin pag naging sirena siya? Sabi niya, ‘Dun lang ako sa kuwarto, itatago ako ni tito Vic dun. Kung dito lang ako sa kuwarto madali ang shooting.’ Gagawin na sana ni direk Bibeth pero sabi ko huwag na, i-save na lang natin for a bigger one. I-develop na lang natin para full-blown pelikula na. So pati yung mga eksena dun, yung mga sitwasyon, karamihan galing sa kanya. Titingnan tingnan mo lang malakas din ang tama eh (laughs). She’s very creative,” he said.

The movie also marks the big screen debut of Alonzo Muhlach, son of former child star Niño Muhlach, who is also part of My Big Bossing. Vic says it wasn’t a hard decision to cast the four-year-old as talent obviously runs in the family. “We needed a prince and tamang tama nabanggit sa akin na lumabas siya sa TV tapos ayun nagpasikat na, kung anu-ano ginawa. The My Big Bossing star said he did not originally intend to make the movie a trilogy with episodes entitled Sirena, Taktak, and Prinsesa. His past MMFF films Enteng Kabisote and My Little Bossing were already a success in the box-office following a single storyline. “Nung una nga parang gusto ko gawin yung Sirena lang pero nagbabago pa isip ko. Gusto namin gawin yung pagka-horror na pangbata. Walang gumagawa ng horror na pangbata eh. Tapos meron naman nagsuggest na gawin namin fantasy, yung may prinsesa para mala-Frozen. So naisip na mabuti pang gawing tatlo. Ganun nagsimula yun.

Akala ko madali (laughs). Pero aaminin ko mahirap. It was very challenging especially for this kid kasi mas iba iba yung role niya dun eh. May sirena, she had to undergo scuba diving lessons, mga swimming techniques. Karamihan ng eksena sa tubig siya. Makikita mo naman sa bilbil eh, pag walang bilbil hindi siya yun (laughs). Tapos yung sa horror may pagka-Himala yung peg niya dun eh, to wear a wig na mahaba buhok, mala-ate Guy ang dating tapos naka-harness siya dun and all that stuff. It was very challenging for her and I am proud to say she was able to deliver. And hindi lang basta basta deliver kundi todo delivery. Magaling,” he further commented. Just like his past movies, the talented comedian said My Big Bossing is a movie with a whole lot of heart. “Ang kaibahan nito, kung last year little lang yun ito big na eh. So alam mo na (laughs). Eh talagang big, big in production, big in budget, big in casting kasi bawat episode may sarili siyang cast. At hindi mo matatawaran yung cast naman. Aside from the big budget, it’s also big in story. It’s not just an ordinary patawa film, madaming patawa kasi importante naman yun. Kailangan tumawa tayo lalo na pag pasko. What I am so proud about with this trilogy is the heartwarming factor of the stories. Habang tumatagal, yung sirena talagang pakuwela, may konting kurot. Pagdating nung gitna, sa episode na Taktak, medyo umaatake na yung human interest ng tatay sa anak. Pagdating nung Prinsesa, ayun na naka-todo na yung heartwarming qualities niya. Kasi siya lumaki siya sa babuyan eh. Paniwala niya sa sarili niya baboy siya eh. Although hindi naman siya mukhang baboy. But she turns out to be a princess after all. Maganda yung story. So ang kaibahan from last year malaking malaki, pati yung mga Enteng Kabisote series ko malaki pagkakaiba dito,” he shares. In terms of budget, My Big Bossing is also a product Vic said they have really invested in for the MMFF. It also boasts of three of the country’s biggest directors Tony Y. Reyes, Marlon N. Rivera and Bb. Joyce Bernal and is the the collaboration of three of the country’s biggest film production outfits: Octoarts Films, M-Zet TV Production and APT Entertainment. “Ang budget nito times three. Para kaming gumawa ng tatlong pelikula eh. The running time maybe 30 to 40 minutes per episode pero yung budget niya wala sa running time eh. Makikita mo sa production design. For example yung bahay ni Ryzza na makikita niyo dun sa Taktak, walang bahay dun. Pinagawa lang ni direk Marlon Rivera yun sa ibabaw ng bundok. Nag-construct kami ng bahay tapos yung mga mala-palasyo, makikita mo sa production design. Sa Sirena episode naman mga underwater scenes, yung mga costume namin ni Ryzza. Mga budget namin dati is ganito eh times three ito yun kasi times three din yung set ng directors, staff and cast. Pero after seeing the finished product, sulit na sulit ito. Hindi ako mapapahiya. Hindi kami mapapahiya lalo na sa mga magbabayad para manuod ng sine.”

Contrary to speculations that spread recently, Aiko Melendez is still very much single and ready to mingle. Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago recently launched her book titled Stupid Is Forever and held a book-signing event at National Book Store in Trinoma last Wednesday where thousands of fans flocked to the venue. The first major concert of The Voice Kids—featuring Lyca Gairanod, Darren Espanto, Juan Karlos Labajo, Darlene Vibares, Edray Teodoro, and Tonton Cabiles— was successfully held last Saturday, December 6, at the Philippine International Convention Center Plenary Hall. The kids sang their signature songs for the opening production. Lyca performed “Basang Basa sa Ulan,” JK “Sway,” Edray “Tulak ng Bibig, Kabig ng Dibdib,” Tonton “Dance with My Father,” Darlene “Girl on Fire” and Darren “One Moment in Time.” Led by Lyca, they concluded with “Pangarap na Bituin. Showing off their total performer skills, JK sang and danced to Pompeii’s “Bastille” while Darlene showed that she can definitely hit the high notes with “Tomorrow” from the musical, Annie. Amid all the controversies faced by their family, Nicco Manalo, the eldest son of comedian Jose Manalo, is still positive that everything would fare well for their family sooner or later. With Christmas just around the corner, Nicco, in a recent interview with Push. com.ph, was asked whether he thinks his parents would patch things up for the important holiday. “Hindi ko alam. Pero siyempre, maganda naman ‘yung maayos ang mga bagay-bagay. Masaya naman yung ganon. Masaya ang Pasko kung magiging gano’n nga. On Aquino and Abunda Tonight, Isabelle Daza said she decided to be a Kapamilya because she wanted a new challenge and a chance to hone her acting skills. Host Boy Abunda told Isabelle that he’s a fan of the way she acts and that he could still remember some of her scenes in Lihis. Isabelle said she personally believes “you’re only as good as your director” and that she’s blessed to have worked with good directors like Cathy Garcia Molina who cured her of her habit of pouting. Asked what her acting style is, Isabelle said she doesn’t like “over acting.” Her mom Gloria Diaz always tells her to “say it with your eyes.” Under her mom’s tutelage, Isabelle is also not fond of big gestures when she acts. But who is the better actor between her and her Mom? Isabelle laughed and said, “You should ask her that. I don’t think I’ve had enough experience.” Isabelle also recounted a conversation she had with her mom. One time Isabelle was complaining to her mom about not having enough sleep for three days because of her workload, to which her mom replied, “that’s why I’m telling you to save your money, don’t be materialistic.” To this Isabel quipped, “I’ll just marry rich.” Her mom then told her, “The money goes, the monkey stays.” Isabel said this advice encompasses love, money, marriage, and just about everything. Roxie is played by Bianca Marroquin who is also the first Mexican actress to land a lead role on Broadway. “Roxie Hart to me is a very delicious role to play because it has everything you ever wanted. It’s like a dream role. First of all she’s a dancer, an actress, a comedian, and a singer so it’s all the things that we’ve been trained to do. I always like to think that Roxie goes through all the emotions in the two hours and 20 minutes that the show is about because she’s very feisty and crazy and passionate and very impiulsive and get to see why she’s actually capable of killing somebody but then she’s very vulnerable,” she said.
