What

Chaffs Your…

The wind has been slowly backing all day and everyone knows there is a cold

front on its way. By nightfall the wind is a steady thirty knot blow and I know I won’t get much sleep tonight. I’m currently in a city marina mooring field with two hundred or so other boats. Don’t get me wrong I love being on a ball. A good mooring ball will not drag around like an anchor can. Also, not being on a dock there is a huge reduction in your contact with roaches, rats, iguanas, and who knows what else. Unlike being on a dock, moorings will allow your boat to point the wind which gives you great airflow below decks. But being on a mooring ball also means you must be ever vigilant looking out for the other guy. You know the ones who use….. say…. cotton cloths line to tie up with. No, I’m not being funny. On this night I’m not disappointed. The gusts are coming in at thirty five to forty five knots and the first victim is a dinghy. From the looks of it someone had used plain polypropylene line from the hardware store to tie it off with. Polypropylene floats and is cheap enough, but you can chaff through it with a baseball bat. Tomorrow it will be found in the mangroves somewhere. Hopefully it will still be upright and the motor will not have disappeared. Then the big event happens. Why do boating calamities want to climax at 4:00 am? Anyway, a 45’ trawler has chaffed through both of his mooring lines. A later inspection will reveal that he only used 3/8 inch polyester line that has very little stretch. Further, that he simply cleated them off and allowed them to run around the stanchions where the flange bolts would cut right through them setting his boat adrift. The collision with his nearest downwind neighbor rudely rousted him out of bed and into action. The radio blows up in the harbor transmitting the eminent danger. Keeping the spirit that no major calamity is caused by a single mistake, he started both engines to back off of the boat he has collided with having forgotten that his dinghy is on a short painter behind him. He backs over the dinghy damaging both prop shafts and is now disabled at the whims of the wind. In the end, those souls who maintained a storm watch would mobilize to secure his boat safely, but only after he collided with four other vessels. The only thing he did right was to have a paid up insurance policy. Otherwise his bill would have been many tens of thousands of dollars. Our boats spend most of the time in port. Most boat damage and deaths occur in port because we feel safe. It seems to me that if being in port is the most dangerous place we would be more vigilant, checking all of vessel systems more regularly. But that’s just me.

Ahh the Anchor The Green Parrot is a great hang out in

Nassau. There is plenty of dinghy dockage, Wi-Fi, marina and of course cold beer. From there I have a view of the entire harbor cruise ships and all. Its always on my stop over list when transiting the Bahama’s. The harbor represents some tricky business when anchoring. The holding is good, but not exactly great. The key is to let out a little more than normal scope without impinging on the other captains already anchored there. It is important to understand what I just said. If I’m the first one to anchor everyone who anchors after me is obliged to respect my position and swing. Anyone who’s anchor drags is at fault for damages if they hit another boat. Further, if your anchor drags and you wind up coming to a stop too close to another boat you have the hassle of having to weigh and reset your anchor in a different location. I have learned that anchors have the highest propensity for dragging at or about 4 a.m. The hard truth about cruising is that I spend more than ten days at anchor for every day underway. Being on anchor means constantly checking for chaffed lines, the boat dragging, and watching the other boats. Most GPS systems have drag alarms to alert you if you’re actually on the boat. I long ago lost count of how many times I’ve returned from shore to find my alarm going off. But back to the Green Parrot. This guy is sitting at the bar complaining that his new boat will not anchor for more than an hour. He is making out as if it is a boat design problem and I’m patiently listening to him. I happened to be watching him two days before when he first came in the harbor and immediately put him on my “must keep an eye on that one” list. First of all, he let his anchor drop while going down wind. Then he paid out maybe forty feet of rode in twelve to fifteen feet of water. By my way of reckoning he should have let go at least a hundred forty feet of rode (fifteen feet of water plus five feet from the water to his anchor roller is twenty which is then multiplied by seven – multiply by ten in rough times). The upshot of it all was that after raising and lowering his anchor um-teen times, he got a slip at the marina and was convinced that he bought a poorly designed boat. I sipped my beer and listened till he was finished. There were so many things I wanted to share with him, but sometimes you just have to let things slide past you without getting involved. This was definitely one of those times. So, my only comment to him was that his boat is much better off in the marina. I also did not mention to him how much I personally was relieved.
