Perceiving Perception I

watched the portlight at the end of my bed start to glow with sunlight. The sight of it rousted my senses, so I immediately got up and started the coffee pot. Settled into the cockpit with hot Joe, I watched the sunrise over the harbor. I love this time of day. It’s really quiet, there is no boating traffic yet, the wife is snug in bed with that funny little snore of hers and all is right with the world, as the view of the palm trees turn from silhouettes to their full color. The season has started in earnest here and the harbor is nearly full already. The view makes me laugh at myself. Many people idolize my lifestyle and don’t get me wrong I do to. But, perceptions are funny things. Looking around, what I actually see, if I had to be honest, is a fiberglass trailer court or R/V park. As the day wears on there will be more traffic and the constant rumbling noise of generators until well after dark. Instead of cars in the driveway, we have dinghies tied up alongside our fiberglass home. The only real distinction here is the constant, vigilant practice of seamanship. Wind shifts, weather changes, tide and current awareness keep us on our toes. From time-to-time the entire harbor will go from peaceful paradise to wet-and-exciting, in a single puff of wind. I like being anchored or on a mooring at the edge of a harbor for the simple reason that I can turn my back to the crowd and pretend they are not there. This morning is no exception. Turning my back and enjoying the sunrise over the uninhabited mangroves gives me the perception of having the whole place to myself. I don’t have any hermitic penchants, but I don’t travel by boat to be with the other boaters either. Interfacing with other cruisers is integral for several reasons. Not the least of which, is that we often have to rely on each other and many of them provide

valuable information for future destinations. But, I want to see new lands, new cultures, new foods and add to my awareness some things that I was unaware of beforehand. Paradise is in the perception of what you are trying to perceive. For me, that means I can find paradise in any harbor. Truly secluded harbors, you know, the ones where you can be naked topside and while swimming. The ones where you can drift fish in the dinghy all day and never see another boat. These harbors are becoming extinct. These gems really do still exist, but GPS is making them harder to find. So, my perceptions have had to be adjusted along the way. I know better than to begrudge the change, I know how to embrace it to preserve my place in paradise. So, get off the dock and meet me out here. Bring beer and some ice if you have a way to keep it cold. Capt’n Mike www.Whensday.us NauticalDetailers.com • 910.547.4148 • timhmg@gmail.com

Dark and Stormy

Boat Preparations By Patrick Griffin, SV Irie This piece was written before Hurricane Florence even existed as a storm. We have dear friends who

made very difficult decisions in order to prepare their homes and evacuate their families. We wouldn’t be who we are without the friendships we have in the Wilmington area. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the storm. When living and cruising on a sailboat, safety is paramount. Next on the list (because it has a very direct impact on priority number one) is the weather. Cruisers spend most of their time talking about the weather, how it is, how it's been, what we're expecting and making sure the people around us know about anything major on the horizon. Hurricanes are an annual occurrence; therefore, they are taken very seriously. I keep the NOAA Hurricane Center page open on my phone that I refresh on a weekly basis to see what's happening off of the west coast of Africa. During the months from May to November, I check it frequently to see if there are any potential disturbances that I need to keep an eye on. I also follow several weather and cruising sailboat forums to keep me abreast of anything I need to know about. Our hurricane plan is pretty basic. From May to November we move the boat North, kind of on a yearly migration. We have also contemplated going further South potentially Grenada, Trinidad, or the southwestern Caribbean. These are fairly doable options as well. We realize that that is not possible for many, these have just been our options. I have ridden out Hurricane Irene at anchor in Rhode Island as well as Tropical storm Ana in Cape Cod. Our boat was on the hard at a boatyard in Wilmington for Hurricane Irma. There are many that I just do not recall the name of where I squeaked into a boatyard at the last minute by the skin of my teeth. I have also helped my dad figure out how to situate his boat in preparation for a direct hit by Superstorm Sandy in Cape May NJ. We have been consulted by many and sometimes from afar. We advised our friends how to avoid Irma in Puerto Rico. Just last week I drove to Carolina Beach NC to try to help a friend move their boat to a hurricane hole up the Cape Fear River. For us, it's all about planning and always having one. The biggest thing when planning is to stay as far away from it as possible. That's a lot easier said than done, I know. Hurricane Irma went from being a disorganized grouping of storm systems near the Canary Islands to a tropical depression then to a tropical storm almost overnight. It then turned into a hurricane not long after. It then took almost a week to travel across the Atlantic Ocean turning into a monster in the process. This information still wouldn’t have changed the outcome for the inhabitants of the Windward

and Leeward islands, but it did allow thousands of boaters to evacuate this part of the Caribbean (many still, unfortunately, stayed). If you absolutely must prepare your vessel to ride out a Hurricane, here are some considerations. Verify scenarios with your insurance company to ensure coverage: • Call every single boatyard, marina, yacht club, shipyard, fish pier, etc and ask if they have a boat lift with a capacity to lift and store your vessel. Make sure they can strap it to the ground with twist/ inground anchors and secure it from tipping over. • Find a hurricane hole. Many boaters, storm after storm, simply leave their boat on the dock and throw a few extra dock lines on it and pray. If you have no emotional attachment to it, then that might be what you choose as well. Please be advised in the case of your vessel becoming a projectile you could be held liable. o The perfect hurricane hole is one that is deep enough to allow your boat to swing 360 degrees (as the storm clocks around) with adequate depth to allow for tides and storm surge. You also want it to be the size of a pond with minimal fetch so the high winds cannot create large waves in it. Ideally high surroundings of land and/or trees for wind protection. o One really good anchor is all you really need, but always carry a backup. On our boat we use a 65 lb CQR which has been a great anchor for us. However, the anchor actually is not the part that saves your boat. o Chain is the name of the game. I always joke that you could toss a brick down there as long as you had 300 feet of chain attached to it (do not try this). In all seriousness, in a major storm you are going to need a ratio of at least 7 to 1 (that means at high tide if you are in 10 feet of water you need to have 70 feet of chain out). o If you are using chain and rope rode I would suggest more. More is always better in a lot of wind, but be mindful of other boats. There are many what if scenarios, this is merely a guideline of what we do. o You must also apply chafe protection to every place where the anchor rode/snubber rode would have a potential for rubbing. o Take down anything that can catch wind: sails, canvas, etc. You want the boat as aerodynamic as possible. You would be surprised how even 50 knots of wind can toss a 100- foot boat around like a rag doll. • Find a narrow creek with mangroves you can tie your boat off to. Use as many lines as possible and do not tie close to other boats. Follow all steps for anchoring in a hurricane hole. In the case of extreme flooding, consider moving the boat from being tied to mangroves to a spot where it can be anchored and adjust to the water levels. There are many things that can go wrong still over the course of a storm. For any storms up to a Category 1 hurricane, I would want to stay on the boat and personally check our systems to make sure our holding is adequate. For a Category 2 and above, I would put out as much chain/rode as I had, double and triple and quadruple check everything, make sure the insurance in order (this is actually step 1 or 2 as always) and vacate the boat. If you are seriously ever considering riding out a storm on the boat, you should speak to an experienced captain and crew about it as well as do a significant amount of independent research as well. We highly urge you to prioritize safety first.
