A
fter a couple of days cruising the Florida west coat in fantastic weather and a kindly sea I transited the Caloosahatchee River to haul-out and refit before hurricane season arrives. I always look forward to refits as I enjoy working on the boat as much as I do being underway. I’m fond of DIY yards that don’t have any requirements to use the marina staff for anything. Being a fulltime cruiser, I also want to live on the boat while working. Doing the work yourself leaves you in a better position later to effect repairs in an emergency. If you did the work and it fails later down the way, you will be an expert on how to best fix it. I equally enjoy the boatyard culture complete with sunset community meals and ad hoc music jams. Being in the yards is a time when you can relax your self-reliant fervor a little. However, if you spend any time out here in Waterworld you will have a growing list of things that just piss you off. Any lifestyle has its good and bad points and we all like to think that fulltime cruising is somehow exempt, but of course it is not. I read a cartoon recently; the first frame was a couple screaming expletives at each other from the cockpit to the bow while anchoring; the next frame was the same couple sitting in the cockpit drinking wine acknowledging how great life on a boat is. There is nothing you can do when a couple like this interrupts your peace as they anchor next to you except smile, wave and say “welcome to the harbor”. Other events make me want to re-write the Jimmy Buffet lyrics from “these three-day tourists are really a bore” to “these three-day tourists are really dangerous”. Case in point; Tourist with more money than seamanship fires up his mega yacht, flies past me doing 15 knots and throwing a four-foot wake in an inlet with restricted maneuverability. Or worse, the same tourist throws the same wake at boats on a dock….bump, rock and bang. It is a conflicting human dichotomy of wanting to have our way even when we hate that behavior being applied to us. When boaters are underway they want to be unimpeded even if it means waking docked boats. Conversely, the same boater will scream bloody murder to anyone who wakes them while they are at the dock. The only resolution to this type of conflict is discipline and pride in the “craft of seamanship”. Thoreau taught us long ago that the “undisciplined life is not worth living”. Apply a little reasoning to this and it is an easy step to realize that undisciplined actions are an abject annoyance to everyone. Out here on the water they can also be costly and dangerous. Way before Thoreau we had a thing called the “Golden Rule”, you remember, the one that goes: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

How Not to Run Aground Today is one of those beautiful days. It is the kind of day that just the memory of it will keep me on the water, even in bad weather. Today has it all. The wind and the swell are going my way. There is just enough of those puffy fair-weather cumulus clouds to keep the sun from blistering the crew. The fishing has been great and most importantly, I didn’t break anything on the boat. I have been underway for two days and my destination is finally in sight, so now the fun begins. It is a Bahamian port that I have not been to in a few years, but I have plenty of daylight. While most folks simply play their video game to navigate even into port, I have learned that both paper charts and GPS can run you aground in a piloting (navigating in sight of land) situation. That means having the paper charts out, the GPS in the appropriate large-scale setting, and being glued to my bearing compass. I have an older bearing compass that I love, but really like binoculars with a compass built in. They just make things easier, especially on my older eyes. The entrance buoy is supposed to bear 078° according to the GPS, but the actual bearing according to the compass is more like 052°. The GPS simply is wrong. Reality always trumps the video game! It is obvious that the buoy has moved or the channel has had some major modifications done. Something is off and I have no way to figure it out from here. I could just inch my way forward with a look-out on the bow or send the dinghy out to take soundings ahead of us and follow her in. All those things will work and be prudent, but right now they just seem to be too much of a bother. So, I try the easy way to reconcile all this by laying off to see if another boat about my size enters and watch how she does it. Sure enough, within thirty minutes another boat is actually coming out of the harbor. She is taking the head pin well to her port far away from the GPS location. Hailing her, she tells me that in-fact the channel has moved due to the hurricanes of recent. She also said to follow the buoys and ignore the GPS or run aground. My GPS charts had just been up-dated a month ago. The paper charts all had the latest “Notice to Mariners” updates, but neither of them showed the change in the channel. Had it not been for my trusty bearing compass, standing off until everything was reconciled, and getting local information, I would have been grounded and in a mess. As it turned out we are sitting at a tiki bar having our fish cooked for us and drinking adult beverages. I don’t know about you, but I much prefer returning from sea without any outrageous sea stories.
