Nautical Sayings Many phrases that have been adopted into everyday use originate
from seafaring - in particular from the days of sail. Virtually all of these are metaphorical and the original nautical meanings are now forgotten. That association of travel and metaphor is significant in that the word metaphor derives from ancient Greek for ‘to carry’ or ‘to travel’. The influence of other languages and other cultures is evident in many of the long list of English phrases that have nautical origins. It is an undoubted fact that seafaring is also the source of more false etymology than any other sphere. This can be attributed to the attractiveness of the romantic image of horny-handed sailors singing shanties and living a hearty and rough life at sea. After all, it sounds plausible that ‘cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey’ comes from brass ship’s fittings and that POSH means ‘Port out, starboard home’, but neither of these is correct. CANOE, theCommittee to Ascribe a Naval Origin to Everything, doesn’t really exist, but the number of these folk myths makes it seem as though they do. It is lucky for us, in our endeavors’ to distinguish truth from falsehood, that activities at sea have been scrupulously recorded over the centuries, in insurance records, newspaper accounts and, not least, in ships’ log books. The term log-book has an interesting derivation in itself. An early form of measuring a ship’s progress was by casting overboard a wooden board (the log) with a string attached. The rate at which the string was payed out as the ship moved away from the stationary log was measured by counting how long it took between knots in the string. These measurements were later transcribed into a book. Hence we get the term ‘log-book’ and also the name ‘knot’ as the unit of speed at sea. Over the Barrel The most common method of punishment aboard ship was flogging. The unfortunate sailor was tied to a grating, mast or over a barrel. Kissing the gunner’s daughter was being tied over the barrel of a deck cannon whilst it was fired. To Know the Ropes There are miles rope in the rigging of a square rigged ship. The only way of keeping track of the function of all of these lines was to memorize (know) where they were located. It took an experienced seaman to know the ropes. Dressing Down Thin and worn sails were often treated with oil or wax to renew their effectiveness. This was called dressing down. An officer or sailor who was reprimanded or scolded received a dressing down. Footloose The bottom portion of a sail is called the foot. If it is not secured, it is footloose and it dances randomly in the wind. Also known for a sail with no boom. First Rate Implies excellence. From the sixteenth century until steam powered ships took over, British naval ships were rated as to the number of heavy cannon they carried. A ship of 100 or more guns was a First Rate line-of-battle ship. Second rates carried 90 to 98 guns; Third Rates, 64 to 89 guns; Fourth Rates, 50 to 60 guns. Frigates carrying 20 to 48 guns were fifth and sixth rated.

Pipe Down Means stop talking and be quiet. The Pipe Down was the last signal from the Boson’s pipe each day which meant lights out and silence. Feeling blue When a ship’s captain died during a voyage, his ship would return to port flying a blue flag and bearing a blue stripe on its hull. The term “feeling blue” signifies depression or sadness today. Three Sheets to the Wind A sheet is a rope line which controls the tension on corners of a square sail. If, on a three masted ship, the sheets of the three lower course sails are loose, the sails will flap and flutter and are said to be in the wind. A ship in this condition would stagger and wander aimlessly downwind acting much like a drunken sailor.
Pooped The poop is the stern section of a ship. To be pooped is to be struck by a high, following sea or wave on the stern. As the Crow Flies When lost or unsure of their position in coastal waters, ships would release a caged crow. The crow would fly straight towards the nearest land thus giving the vessel some sort of a navigational fix. The tallest lookout platform on a ship came to be known as the crow’s nest. Cut and Run If a smaller ship at anchor was discovered by a larger enemy vessel, the smaller ship might decide that discretion is the better part of valor, and so would order the crew to cut the anchor cable and sail off in a hurry. continued from page 25

The Bitter End The end of an anchor cable is fastened to the bits at the ship’s bow. If all of the anchor cable has been paid out you have come to the bitter end. Toe the Line When called to line up at attention, the ship’s crew would form up with their toes touching a seam in the deck planking. Bear Down To sail downwind rapidly towards another ship or landmark. Under the Weather If a crewman is standing watch on the weather side of the bow, he will be subject to the constant beating of the sea and the ocean spray. He will be under the weather. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea The devil seam was the curved seam in the deck planking closest to the side of the ship and next to the scupper gutters. If a sailor were hanging off the side in a boatswains chair you would be between the devil and the deep blue sea. The Devil to Pay To pay the deck seams meant to seal them with tar. The devil seam was the most difficult to pay because it was curved and intersected with the straight deck planking. Paying the Devil was considered to be a most difficult and unpleasant task, sometimes used as mild punishment. A Square Meal The crews’ mess was a warm meal served on square wooden platters. They were not nutritionally balanced.
Fly-by-Night The word fly means “to sail” in nautical jargon. Sailing at night was a difficult and dangerous task. Therefore, when the night watch began, the elaborate sails used during the day were replaced by one large sail requiring rather little attention. This was the easiest sail to set and take down thus it could be put up and taken down quickly. Give (someone) a Wide Berth To anchor a ship far enough away from another ship so that they did not hit each other when they swung with the wind or tide. High and dry Stranded, without help or hope of recovery. This term originally referred to ships that were beached. The ‘dry’ implies that, not only were they out of the water, but had been for some time and could be expected to remain so. Garbled Garbling was the prohibited practice of mixing rubbish with the cargo. A distorted or mixed up signal or message was said to be garbled. Press Into Service The British navy filled their ships’ crew quotas by kidnapping men off the streets and forcing them into service. This was called Pressment and was done by Press Gangs. Touch and Go This referred to a ship’s keel touching the bottom and getting right off again.

Yellowfin Tuna Fishing How-To For Small-Boat Owners By Jerry Labella
The line peeled from the wide--spool reel at an incredible pace. The angler
Compared to the offshore yacht owner, the small-boat owner will need to dress up a bit more for the encounter— much like a prize fighter preparing for a match. struggled to lift the pole from the rod holder and to place it in his previously strapped on stand-up harness. His companion instantly took over control of the cockpit, wedging himself between the driver and the controls, and swiftly turned the boat 180 degrees in pursuit of the line heading off into the distance.
“Don’t stop reeling,” he instructed, “until you can get some line back on that spool.” The line was replenishing fast, but for the time being, he could only recover less than half of the 550 yards the reel was originally spooled with. “Charlie,” the tuna that is, was not yet finished. Two hours later, after wearing out 3 men and locking up a new and very reputable reel, “Charlie” had to be hand lined in the rest of the way for the gaff. Ol’“Charlie,” a 117 pound yellowfin tuna, had the odds of being lost in his favor, if it weren’t for quick thinking on the part of an experienced fisherman aboard that day. Obviously, catching yellowfin tuna can in no way be equated with catching any inshore species— no matter what size you have encountered. When going after tuna, newcomers try their luck with much disappointment, but catch on quickly after finding out the basic how-to and following through.
The first thing one needs in order to catch Ol’“Charlie” is a stand-up harness. Of course if one has a fighting chair, this won’t be needed. The purpose of the standup harness is to attach the reel and rod to the body. It is basically a leveraging mechanism to take the long fight off of the arms and to disperse it onto the back and leg areas. The section that attaches around the back has two hook latches for attaching to the reel housing ears. These straps should be adjusted so that the rod is in about the two-o-clock position when standing upright. The gimbal belt section should be adjusted to rest on the upper thighs of the legs.
It’s definitely not a battle with a redfish! Novices discover firsthand that hardly is there a fish, pound for pound that can peel off 500 yards of 50 pound test line from a reel in less than 60 seconds— something like snagging onto the back of a Mack truck speeding down the highway.
Once this is all adjusted, the proper fighting stance will require you to face the fish with legs apart, bending only at the knees while pivoting forward and moving your body to the upright position while reeling and pumping the rod. It will take some practice, but it is not hard to do and is generally caught on to after one long fight.
These football-shaped, guided missiles are designed by nature to move through the water with lightning speed. They are literally meat building factories, with a relatively small head and tail section. Everything in between is finely tuned, explosive muscle.
It is important to place the gimbal part of the rod butt into the cross bolt or piece in the gimbal belt pole holster so that the rod butt doesn’t twist, holding it firmly against the legs when fighting a fish.
The yellowfin tuna is the most brilliantly colored of tunas, with a poorly defined stripe of golden-yellow on its upper sides and much bright yellow in most of its fins, hence the name “yellowfin.” It exhibits white spots and vertical stripes on its lower sides and has a dark bluish-black upper section. Connecting with one of these proficient, elusive predators is perhaps more easily accomplished than successfully boating one. That’s because they have the ability to wear down and humiliate both the best of tackle and tacklers, seemingly effortlessly. Yellowfin tuna can be caught basically like many other species: (1) trolling and (2) casting bait or lures. Trolling, however, seems to be the most popular and successful method for many anglers. 26 I found it in The Coastal Mariner

The next thing you will need is a good rod, between 5 - 6 ft. in length and rated at least in the 50 lb. class. The shorter ones will be best and, if you are using it for stand-up fishing, make sure the rod eyelets are not roller type. Roller eyelets are for use in fighting chairs. It’s okay if there is one roller at the end and/or one ahead of the reel with the rest being circular type eyelets. Rods with all rollers may bend or twist when used for stand-up fishing. A good one-piece reel frame with ball bearings throughout and a heavy-duty drag system is mandatory. Line capacity should be no less than 450 yards when using 30 1b. test and 350 yards when using 50 lb. test. Big game type line should

It is very important to use a lever type drag reel and to set the specified fighting drag tension only after the drag clutches have been properly warmed up by pulling line abruptly from the reel several times at about the drag setting of 4-10 lbs. (warmup setting).
Place the lure in the water at the designated speed and count 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, etc. with spool in free setting, thumbing it lightly so not to backlash. Count to 25,000 and set the lever drag to the strike position. Then place it in the rod holder. If more than one rod is trolled, stagger each by at least a ten count differential to prevent entanglement. Down riggers may be used but are not normally needed unless you are trolling in mid to late summer. Always keep at least one flat line— a line with nothing more than the lure attached. Once the lines are set out, troll around structures like oil production platforms in the blue water zone. It’s a good idea to staying 100 yards clear of production platforms, especially if you are deep trolling. Deep diving lures trolled with down riggers can hang up on cross pipes from these rigs which extend out under the water. Circle the rigs, broadening the circle each time you complete the route.
For rigs less than a mile or so apart, make figure eight patterns around them broadening the course each time you complete the route until you find fish. Transition Hook If you’ve ever spent time on a serious Sportfisherman or a “Battlewagon”, you probably noticed that the 5 gallon buckets used on board had their wire handles removed and replaced with a piece of dock line. There are several reasons for this. The wire handles can rust, they rattle and they can also scratch the big buck paint job or gel coat finishes on the boat. Some crews like to hang them from the fighting chair for various reasons and the wire handle doesn’t allow this. But the biggest reason that any Mate will tell you is that the rope handle is just more comfortable if you’re lugging buckets full of water, ice, chum and fish all day long. The Top Shelf Marine Products patent pending “transition hook” alleviates these issues. The “transition hook” is installed and permanently attached to high quality and massive 5/8” diameter Marine Grade 12 strand nylon line using a unique and novel attachment method. The “transition hooks” are made of high quality passivated Stainless Steel and will not rust or discolor. For further details visit www.topshelfmarine.com.
IGFA Launches New All-Tackle Length Record Category! Catch-and-release anglers and conservationists; you asked for it and you got it. The International Game Fish Association has added a new 100% release category to its world records section beginning in 2011. Based on length rather than weight, the new IGFA’s All-Tackle Length Record category will make 60 freshwater and 67 saltwater species eligible for new world records while requiring the fish to be returned to the water alive after measurement. With 127 new world record vacancies becoming available on January 1, the IGFA’s World Records office is expecting a flurry of competition for new titles in the New Year. “The new All-Tackle Length record category is another great means of recognizing angler achievement and also has a strong conservation message,” said IGFA World Records Coordinator Jack Vitek. “While the IGFA does not require a fish to be killed for traditional weight category records, and many fish are indeed released alive, this is the first IGFA record category to adopt an all-release format.” Vitek added that with no need to return to the docks to weigh a catch, anglers pursuing a length record will utilize a standard measuring device (now available online at www.store.igfa.org and soon through several major fishing tackle retailers) to record the length of their catch. According to the official IGFA Rules and Requirements for AllTackle Length Records, the fish “must be measured at the site of capture and released so that it swims away on its own and in good condition.” To facilitate healthy release, the document also includes tips on best release practices and prohibits fish entered for length records from also being submitted for traditional weight records; another deterrent from keeping the fish out of the water any longer than necessary. “Catch and release fishing is becoming increasingly popular worldwide,” stated IGFA Conservation Director Jason Schratwieser. “We know recreational anglers are passionate about conservation, and this new record category reflects their dedication to conserving game fish.” The new IGFA All-Tackle Length record category will begin accepting applications on January 1. The Official IGFA Measuring device is now available for sale through the IGFA’s website and look for more information on rules, requirements and eligible species of the newly added category to be featured in the upcoming 2011 World Record Game Fishes book sent to members in January.
