Jenny Beorkrem

The founder of Ork posters is a typographic designer that works alot with maps and showing the different neighborhood of a city usign the name of each area as a guide to producing the areas sides. This gives a peice of art which is very unique and different from anything i have seen to within my research so far. Below i have a collection of images that i have found of some of her work.

Mark Andrew Webber

This designer is similar to Jenny as he uses the same styles in his practices, some which are similar to the work she works on. His peice of work that he is mainly known for is his work on maps and typography within maps. For his work Mark uses lino and a scalpel to scare out his map out.

Mark in his work then uses paint to signify largily populated areas, this is a good idea as the pop of colour bring you into the art which before would have been plain and mono-tone making. In his work he has uses the typography to show areas of intrest and means that in a way it could be used in many way. He has done many large cities around the world including Berlin, Paris and New York, these are his best peices and told him several months to complete, he says some of his inspriation is within the cities that he is creating using signposts and building names to come up with a map full of text which from close up is hard to read.

Research Designers

Clet Abraham

The work that Clet works on it very unique as it incorporates the work of other designers before he can start. These designers are the likes of Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert who created the signposts for British roads. Clets work includes the defacing of signposts to make them funny. To this day he has mainly focused on the cities of Florence (home town), Rome, London and Rennes. He calls his art stickers on signs saying he is respecting road signs but question are been talked about if he is infact defacing the signs. There also been people saying that the content in the signs are now provocative, the crucified christ for example but he say that it show a “dead end which is what the sign was showing before he had made any changes.

Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert

These set of designer are not designers that you would think to have been, they created the signage that is used to this day still in the UK. Jock Kinneir was the main designer of these but died early meaning not all of his work was shown while he was alive. Some of this work has inspired the likes of street art designers to come and change how these signs look just like the designer to the left that I have looked at. I feel that if I was to go ahead with this idea as my main idea then I would need to look at different road signs to be able to get a sence of the differnet masking I could do to change these signs to make them my own.

Some of the signs that they have created have not been ones that designers that i have found have touched, i want to change this in maybe chosing this idea and making them smaller so that i can work on them digitaly and in a scale model size.

Research Designers

Lazslo Moholy-nagy

Some of Lazslo work that I like the most is his typography and photography that he has created. One peice that really stands out for me is “Die gegenstandsloe Welt 1927, this peice was created as an minimalistic peice that was well ahead of his time. Some of the reasons liking this peice so much is the coliur patterns that he has used, these been Oranges and blacks on a cream background. This hardcovered book is very inspriational as it gives me styles of text which can be minimalistic yet give a sence of filling the page due to other styles that he has used. For example the band of colour which streches the back of the cover in orange bringing a warm colourful feel to the book which is not seen in the front of the book, this is more plain with splashes of colour on the image. The minimalistic feel come on the front with the text staying black and small on the cover so that the background is free to represent the book. Some of his other work which I think is similar to this is Malerei, Fotografue, Film 1925. This is a photography book of some of his work within a city enviroment in the times he was alive. I like some of how his typography styles have mixed within his Photography to make a peice which is visualy stunning.

Research Designers Rylsee

This designer like to focus his work around the distortion and illusion of this work taking normal typography and typefaces and making it so that the text looks 3D so that people can hold it or pull it out of the page. In the printscreens below the letters appear to distort and or pop off the screen, this is a cool idea that I have not seen in many ways and it gives a cool look to typography and typefaces. I really like the way that he has designred these and I think that the best one is the B as it stands out not just as a typeface but also as a container and so a product which could be used, in this case the container is been used to hold lover case b’s, this is a cool idea as a lover case b is smaller than the captail B which the container is made from Another part of teh typography that I like is the fact that the text is simple and minimalistic, this is something that I realy like and what I aim for when designing and creating typefaces.

it will be easier than using the dot system. There is then five different areas of the When creating a typeface there is many typeface that you need to look at, these are ways that you can start. The best way to the rest of the lower case letter, capitals, start I think is by finding inspiration which numbers, punctuation and then symbols. will contribute in the designing of typeface. These are not all needed as you may not There are many different ways to start be using them all or giving the typeface when designing a typeface, one way is to out for use. Then scan or redraw them start with the easier lower case lettering. into a typeface program. This will start a For example a, e, g, n, o. These to get an idea of what the typeface is are best do within a program as they are going to look like. Then when you are hard to get right but by using your eyes, happy with the final outcome you can start spacing is the worst as if you are even to try other letters and numbers, using a millimetre out then it can be seen in a hamburgefontsio123. once this is done and sentence and ruined. spacing and kerning you are happy with it then you can start can be set automatically in the software to do the capitals. When you are a beginner in designing typefaces the first thing you should do is to draw the letters with curves by hand as

Typeface classification

The typeface classification is based on a part from the mid century work of French typographic designer/ historian Maximillian Vox. He focused his entire life to make this system for people to follow when designing typefaces.

Problems with classification one problem that i have found whne working using this classification timeline is that it is old and so some of the information on it is now not needed or has ben proven to be wrong, this is due to the improvement and development of typography and typefaces in general. As the subject has evoved so should have the classification system, but it didnt meaning that the system now has big gaps in it meaning people try fixing it. This then creates different classification

systems all over the world that are different which is the opposite of what Maximillian Vox wanted. All over the world now there is hybird catagoirs which many people either dont believe in or dont know exist meaning that the same catagories can have different names in different places.

Chosen font type

There are many reasons why I have chosen to use this font as my main font. One of these reasons is because it is a very simple font to remake and means that if i want to make any changes to the font I could do without making it unreadable. The next reason why i have chosen this font/ typeface to use other than any other is because when designing my final outcome i wanted it to look clean, sharp and modern. This will give the overall piece a cleaner more professional look.

As you can see to the left my the font/ typeface that i am using is a San Serif font in the sub context of Geometric San Serif. This font is called Futura PT. This font i think will work for most of my final work as it uses squared off edges and so it will match up with the photos they will later be with as the straight edges of the letter will match straight roads and the curves of some of the capitals but all of the lower case letters will match the curves in roads and buildings that will be clearly visible in my work. I really like how this font/ typeface would bend with modern themes because some of the features that it has, but I dont think it would work in a industrial themed piece as the font/typeface looks too modern. If i was going to use this font/typeface in my work i would use white wash effect over an image with the letter cut out of it. This would give an clean modern look.

Research

Industrialization

Here are some of the various images that I have collected from around the area of Huddersfield, Halifax and Liverpool. These photos will be used in my work to either inspire me or used in my work as brushes to compliment the final images that i take for my idea. This will be used to give character and life-like wear and tear just like an undustrial area would.

Research Modernism

Here I will be using the images that i have collected to put inspriation into my work taking the modern theme of the areas and making them show within the markings in my work. Most of the images here have been taken in a various of places that i have visted but the ones I liked the most which you see around have been taken in Huddersfield.

Research

Typography

Within a city there s many ways that typograph can be looked at. for example if you look at the images around here you can see they are mostly used for helping road workers fix problems or find out where it is if there is a problem. I really like how these photos have turned out and i wish to use some of these within my work as stamps of the area within the photos. Most of these photos you see around have been taken in the industrial zone of halifax and Huddersfield.

Research Layouts

Here I wanted to find out the best way that i could layout some pages if i was to be creating a book for my artwork from this project to go into. As you can see on the left I have chosen to go with a monochrome colour scheme book, the reason that I have done this is to get in idea of the layout itself and not the colours that are on it. On this piece I really liked the way in which the main name of the piece “Greenland Street was on its own page alone from anything else other than a background colour which followed every page with a distance of what looks to be around 20mm (2cm). I think that the background on this piece really brings this piece together even though on some of the pages it cant be seen, the background is very light and so can only just be seen in the photo so it give a sense of a background without all the colour of what a darker background would do One other part of this layout which i think is very important is the way in which the text is laid out on the second page, I think that the five columns really work with the layout and if the columns were much bigger it would

take away from the layout causing the reader to get bored of the text and just focus on the images, here I think that the designer has got the correct proportions to keep the page together. As you can see with the layout below the image is much more colourful even with on the splash of yellow that has been added. Here I really liked the way in which the designed had the readers attention focused first on the image due to the colour and then the text made apparent with the wide columns. I think that the column size is just wide enough so the reader is not distracted before he has looked at the rest of the page. I really liked the way in which the typeface had been laid out in the point that it was scaled in but also how it had been aligned keeping it simple so the text spacing was kept the same.

Research Layouts

Here I really liked the way the designer had focused on the imagery first making most of the pages having little gaps to the edges of the pages. The page though that really stand out is the one with text, this is made the focus point of the piece due to the images, I really like this idea and may end of using this if I do a book as my final piece. I think that the text on this page has been laid out perfectly and the larger text at the top really doesn’t stand out as artwork when you first look at it making it less of a focus feature of the page ad letting the smaller text do it for itself. I also like the way in which the designer has slowly introduced the title of the piece

on everything after the second page, this gives a feeling that this is not the full piece as there is no contact information and the main purpose for this is what the “Agency is doing and not how they can be contacted making it more of a designer piece than a company itself.

Ideas

Routines within the city With this idea I really wanted to capture the city in my eyes, how i saw it every day and night. This then brought up the idea of a book that didn’t show a routine but a look into my life and where i go within the city of Huddersfield. The reason that I have chosen to do this idea purposely of Huddersfield is because it is now my home town, the one i visit most often and so it would be silly to do it anywhere else as I wouldnt visit there as much. The target audience of this idea would be mainly followers of myself as it gives them a look into what I call my own world. This would not be the only audience though as I think the book would also go down as a n artist piece and so would be classed as a piece of art. Within this idea i will be using the images that I take as a main focus area on each of the pages with each of the images having a little writing to explain what is going on in the photo I will also be having tags on the pages including street names on signs posts and times or days that i visit the area.

Another idea I had for this would be an area map of the city with colours representing the ways that people walk around, this would give a good sense of how people move around the city and how people routines can change There is going to be focus areas where people go and these will be marked with a block of colour either as a circle of square depending which designer style that I choose to go with. The target audience for this would be younger adults I think as the piece would be minimalistic and so keeping to a modern theme but it would also have a splash of colour giving the room its in a focus point to look at. This piece is going to mainly be posters but could be changed easily into a art book with each page been a different city of time of day.

Ideas

People’s thoughts This idea came from the designer of the image to the left, this image I found on Pintrest published for Noel Gallaghers High flying birds tour. I think that this piece is very inspirational as you can take the idea and apply it to anything you want, for example. I have to include a City in flux, this piece could show a street and have a phrase such as “once a busy street, now a desolate environment. The target audience for this piece would be older as I can see them wanting to hold on a past within the photos. The gender could be either as different environments could hold different reasoning for the piece and with a different reason comes a different audience. The final outcome of this piece would most likely be a bunch of around three to five posters which could then be either sold separately or as a group making them a set you could buy. I would make it so the original poster was created on A3 but could be shrunk down to fit within an A4 size making easier to transport or hang.

Ideas

City life My first idea for this topic is to create posters that each have one letter on from A to Z and then over layered I was going to have an image of the city, this was just going to be a random image that represented the city. This idea though seemed to be vague and so I remade it into something different, this time I took the idea and changed it so it wasn’t the full alphabet that I was using and instead it was just the letters that made up the town/cities name For example HUDDERSFIELD, this I think is a god idea as it gives more meaning to the overall outcome. The target audience of this piece would be anyone from the city that I created it for. I think though because

of style type that I would be going with as the typeface the audience would be more suited to a household of younger people as it would give off a modern theme.

This idea came to come while I was taking photos for my primary research. As you can see below the image on the red background is the one I took in Huddersfield and I wanted to recreate this in my own artwork. I wanted to include a younger vibe into the art though and I have done this by making it so the posters and leaflets I use are from nightclubs and bars in the town and so by doing this students and teens can have the artwork they always want without having to so any work.

Development

This to the left was going to be one of my final ideas. This piece was to show the hidden parts of Huddersfield and what the tourists are missing of the once great town. This idea though was not the best one that I had come up with and so I decided to change the idea that I was working on.

Development I then tried to find a new idea by making lots of little ideas like the ones you see around. This was my first idea that I could make lots of little images of towns using what i found on streets and in shops around the town that I was looking in to. This piece of bubble wrap I found outside one of the factories in Huddersfield. This piece I think shows off how

Huddersfield has changed over the years going from a industrial base city to a city for youngsters with the university of Huddersfield opening, The city now has a big night life and this coloured bubble wrap to the left I think shows this as a industrial city becoming more modern.

This is another part that I found. This is the brush strokes from paint brushes that I found for cheap and for free around the city of Huddersfield. The one above is found a paint brush that I found in the Industrial part of Huddersfield and the one below is from ta brush which I bought from a shop called

Rymans, this shop is in the middle of the city. I dont think any of these ideas though are very in depth and if I was to keep on with these ideas I would soon run out of ideas.

Development

This I then my new idea that I came up with using the ideas form the other page. As you can see I have started to create a font using some of the rubbish which I have around the city and this is what i have come up with. On the other side is some prints of some bottle cap which I have found around the city. These I think could be used to create patterns and layers to create depth within some of my work if i am to carry on with this idea. I really like these and I think i will be using them a lot within the next part of my work.

Development These are some of the images that I took when I was out searching for new ideas within Huddersfield. I decided to stick with the patterns ideas and go with a patterns from around the city. This piece here is from one of the buildings sidings from around the university campus, I really like this as it gives a modern contemporary feel which I really like to show within my work. To the right is the original image that I took of the siding and then I took this in to InDesign and changed the properties to make it look like the two images to the left these images I like and it could give a background feel to any image that I will make in the future.

Development

When looking at a map I came up with the idea to the right, this idea I think is my best yet and I think im going to carry it on and create a small A5 book which shows it off in the end. As you can see to the right I started the work by finding a map of Huddersfield that showed where every shop and bars was, including the train and bus stations. This I then used to trace and get a map of my own which I could then personalise so I could say it was my own. I first traced around the ring road to create the image size so i could be sire on how big the overall image would be. I then traced the smaller big roads to create the map you see at the end.

Development I thought this wasn’t enough and there was no colour on the image. To sort this out I traced the canal and river to show where they were on the map I then coloured these in blue so that they stood out and gave colour to the map which I had created.

Development I then added a circle over layer to the map to create the first version of my logo as you can see to the right. I really liked this logo but i think that it needed more to become a final logo that I could be pleased with. To do this I added a Typeface to it with the name Huddersfield written across the front. This would be the first final logo idea that I came up with.

Development As you can see I then changed the font a lot throughout making the font the main factor of the logo and not the map. To do this i put the map to the back and using a filter on the font layer I made it so the map shown through the font making it look like red coloured glass on the map. This I think was a good way to lay it out. As you can also see I decided to add a mask layer to the log to give it a faded effect as it got towards the edge I did this because I thought the logo had an edge that was too harsh.

Development I then decided to mess with the logo to try and give it a different feel. As you can see i turned off the layer effect on the font so it stood out. I didn’t like this as much and so ended up not using it.

Development I then decided to create a simple layout for what I wanted each page to look like, this it is to the right. This was not a layout for other people to understand but myself and it gave me a place to go if I didn’t know what to put where or what was missing on the final page.

Development I then started to mess around trying to find the best way to create each of the title image logos. After a long time I came up with the idea of trying to make them copyright free and with a touch of a clip art funky feel. As you can see to the right i started off by searching for images on Google of what I could then use to create each of the logos. This is these are the logos for each of the pages.

Development Each logo came with a group of photos which I used to create each of the images included within each of the logos, These are to images I used.

Development

Development Within the pages I needed to have an image to show where each of the shops were across the map. To do this I chose to use the logo of the shopping basket and then using the colour schemes of each of the food shops to create a new logo.

Development

This at first was the final logo but I thought as I was putting it all together on the page the logo looked a little bare and it didnt really have much to do with the clubs that were on the page and so I added the ticket for the clubs.

This logo I think is one of the best that I created. It has the most detailed pieces throughout and then the ticket behind the glasses was created solely by myself using leaflet and flyers from the clubs and bars around Huddersfield.

Development

Development

For each of these images for each of the logos I created in either an A4 or A3 canvas size. The reason that I did this is so that it can be changed and scaled down to create a more detailed look. This now I think about it could have been done in Illustrator and would have saved time as it uses Vector images that can be scaled up and down and still keep their image crisp and sharp.

Development Now I have each of the logos I needed to find out about each of the types of place that I searched for and where they are around the city. To do this I again went to Google maps to search for the shops and bars. once I had done this I created logos for some of them to show where they are on the map easily.

For the coffee shop I stuck to the logo keeping it clean and simple as not to add to much colour and sharp images to the page as it was already getting full.

For the nightclubs and bars I decided to spilt up the logo I had first created. To do this I took some of the parts from the orginal logo and layered them s that the parts that were left represented the bar or night club, for example as you can see i split the beer glass from the logo and added a knife and fork I did this because you can also eat in most bars during the day.

For some of these designs I just kept it simple as you can see above. All I have done to this desgin is take the text away that was in the logo.

Development Some of these logo that I used within the map of the city were complex and each had their own logo, this is a good way to way out in my mind as it is easier to find what you are looking for rather than it just been one logo for all of the places.

On the left their is some of the designs for the fast food page that I created. As you can see the logo are all real logos and you probably recognise most of them. To keep them from copyright I have changed some of them like the McDonalds one and the Pizza Hut ones. On the McDonalds logo I have changed the colour yellow that I have used and I have also changed the font that I have used. On the PIzza hut logo I have made it so that the text is now not underneath the logo but is in the logo.

For the food shop page I decided to take a different approach to what I did on the fast food designs. Here I took the colour schemes for each of the shops and then wrapped a design I had made before of a basket of each of the colour schemes, this is also a good way to do it as the colour schemes are well known and so it should be easy for people to understand.

Development Here is the final layout and design of my booklet. First I have shown off the front page of the booklet, this is the main logo that I created for the whole booklet and I think having on the front really shows it off and shows the booklet is going to be simple and modern. Then I have shown off some of the coffee shop pages, here I have cropped the image down so that I can focus on the details in the left corner of the page. I really like how this has come together giving a sort of order to the page. I decided when creating the booklet that I wanted to have some way in knowing what each of the pages were for, to do this I used the first page on each spread to show off the logo for the spread. I have used this logo on the page too but it is a smaller version and so I dont think it wont affect the overall outcome of the piece. Lastly I have shown the whole spread for the recycling bin collection page, this is very good page and I really like how the green used is, it give the page a bright colour which is missing from some of the pages.
